British actress Leandra Ashton filmed as police arrested her mother, Ylenia Angeli, 73, while trying to remove Ashton's 97-year-old grandmother from an English care home before the government's latest coronavirus lockdown. Angeli, a nurse, believed she would be better able to provide care for her mother at home. The family says previous rules promulgated to reduce the spread of the coronavirus have limited their contact with the grandmother, and that has affected her health. Police later released Angeli, but the grandmother was returned to her care home.

In the UK through the home is probably getting a subsidy from the NHS, so the family taking Gran home is a loss of guaranteed income

The real answer to this one is probably paperwork. The Brits love their bureaucracy and the paperwork that goes with it. There probably was a sequence of paperwork to get Nan into the home. Getting her back out probably requires an equal and opposite amount of paperwork.

So just showing up and saying "we are taking Nan home now..." doesn't work. Gotta go file all the paperwork with all the proper authorities first.

Yeah, that is fucked. Did anyone ask the old folks if they want to be saved like this? Lack of physical contact and social interaction can easily send elderly people down hill fast, and it's hard to recover. Loneliness and depression lead to serious health problems especially in the already infirm. If I were in my 80s, I'm pretty sure I'd rather still see and touch my family and friends than be locked up for months for my own supposed protection.
