The 'Highest Single-Day of COVID-19 Deaths' That Wasn't
The coronavirus pandemic has ushered in an age of sloppy, inaccurate journalism and a heightened need for media literacy.

Under the best of circumstances, reporting on COVID-19 is tough. There are simply too many unknowns, and even when officials aren't manipulating the truth they aren't always willing to cop to the fact that they really don't have solid answers.
But there's really no excuse for journalism as sloppy and misleading as the August 13 ABC News segment whose headline blared "US reports highest single-day of COVID-19 deaths." This video was widely shared, appearing not just on the main ABC News site, but also on Good Morning America, MSN.com, and elsewhere. And it simply wasn't true.

In it, the anchor solemnly intones that the "United States is reporting the highest number of deaths in a single day—nearly 1,500" while a graphic briefly but completely undercuts her point. The graphic at least points out an important qualifier: The 1,490 deaths represent the deadliest day "since mid-May." In fact, according to The New York Times' count, the seven-day rolling average number of deaths in April was double what the current numbers are. If you look at the graphic, you can see that peak deaths plainly occurred months ago. But such attention to such an enormously important detail goes completely missing in the ABC segment, and a less-than-attentive viewer could be forgiven for thinking that the country was in fact experiencing record-setting COVID-19 deaths right now.
A similarly misleading story came courtesy of Bloomberg yesteday, which tweeted this clickbait morsel: "JUST IN: Malaysia detects new coronavirus strain that's 10 times more infectious." The story itself was originally titled "Malaysia Detects Coronavirus Strain That's 10 Times More Infectious."
The headline has since been changed to the less incendiary, "Southeast Asia Detects Mutated Virus Strain Sweeping the World," possibly because the article never supported those fearful claims. If you read the piece, you'd learn that the strain being discussed actually "is the predominant variant in Europe and the U.S." and that "there's no evidence from the epidemiology that the mutation is considerably more infectious than other strains," according to an epidemiologist cited in the story. There is a suggestion that it "is said to have a higher possibility of transmission or infectiousness," but there is in fact no evidence that the strain is either new or particularly bad.
The COVID-19 story is a tough one, with new information emerging all the time. But the media, never infallible in the first place, seem increasingly prone to running stories that are not even internally consistent but instead are a hodgepodge of anxiety and apocalypticism. Under such circumstances, it's more important than ever to develop razor-sharp media-literacy and bullshit-detection skills. Whether or not a coronavirus vaccine ever arrives, but can at least inoculate ourselves against the more obvious failures of the Fourth Estate.

Look, do you want Trump out or not?
Not.
My 401k cannot survive another snail paced recovery like the past one Biden was involved in.
So Trump's the answer? Hahahahaha
With Trump, its always "I'll pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!" 4 years of literally the worst president EVER. Completely ineffective, mostly because he has no idea what he doing. He is a simpleton that repeats what he hears on Fox or OAN news.
I don't think the world as we know it can survive another 4 years of that Dolt.
I love that he is simultaneously a dottering idiot and also a criminal mastermind to you retards.
JoJo 2020!
He's just like Bush, who was too stupid to walk and chew gum at the same time, but somehow managed to dupe almost every high-ranking Democrat in Congress into voting for not one but two wars?
As always it's worth noting that Bush's wars, unlike pretty much all of Obama's military actions, were in fact authorized by Congress.
I quit working at shoprite and now I make $65-85 per/h. How? I'm working online! My work didn't exactly make me happy so I decided to take a chance on something new… after 4 years it was so hard to quit my day job but now I couldn't be happier.
Here’s what I do…>>............>> Click here
No one here thinks he's a criminal mastermind. You need to go to Salon or Jacobin to find those sorts of people.
No one ever said he was a criminal mastermind.
Yelling "There was no collusion" doesn't make you a master mind.
Besides the word "collusion" isn't even his. He has maybe a 50 word vocabulary and that isn't one of them. Sorta like "quid pro quo". Unless you believe he his suddenly spouting Latin phrases.
Completely ineffective? Says the three time (failed) coup attempter. More like 4 years of literally the worst corruption the US has ever seen politically. Treason is a very real possibility.
I’m going through your allegations and it’s all typical believer fanaticism coupled with typical believer projection. Biden is the simpleton. In another year he’ll be autistic.
The fact that it took you 4 years to figure out that we weren’t bullshitting when we said trump is pretty straightforward and tells it like it is, is more of a reflection on your party base.
But you couldn’t possibly hear something contrary to what you’ve been told to think could you?
Don't insult autistics. Biden's current condition is "demented". His previous condition was "liar", but it's unlikely that he is capable of knowing the truth anymore.
Right. How cute: He thinks they're just incompetent, not deliberately lying to hurt Trump.
Yes, I want Trump out, but not if it means putting Joe Biden in.
Can we PLEASE have ballots with "none of the above"?
JoJo is on the ballot. Why not vote for her?

I am making $165 an hour working from home. i was greatly surprised at the same time as my neighbour advised me she changed into averaging $ninety five however I see the way it works now. I experience masses freedom now that i'm my non-public boss. that is what I do......

HAHAHAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
The Lefties blew their retarded plan too fast on this Kungflu hysteria.
Georgia has been "open" for months now with only 4,700 deaths while infected. Our schools are "open". Our bars are "open". Our restaurants are "open".
More and more of America is ignoring the tyrant Democrat Party and its dictates. They just cannot control the Narrative nor the numbers that dont back up their lies.
unreason staffers have not made any promises to do wacky stuff when Trump is reelected, have they?

More and more are ignoring the Democrats, but that doesnt mean they won't vote for them. We have a serious problem in this country with, Do as I say, not as I do.
OK.
Georgia population 10.6 million.
According to CDC, the death rate in Georgia for heart disease is 175.8 per 100,000.
So... 175.8 x 10.6 / .1 / 365 = 51.05 deaths per day from the normal No. 1 killer heart disease.
The current 7 day rolling average for COVID-19 is 71 deaths per day.
So COVID-19 is your number one killer. 'WINNING!"
I know, your right wing sounding board says everything is great - but maybe they are lying to you as well.
Oh, and July 4th or so, Georgia was at about 12 deaths per day and the trend is going up right now. Maybe Georgia is just slow?
Nope. According to the Georgia Department of Pubic Health, new cases (onset of symptoms, 7 day rolling average) peaked on July 11, and has been declining sharply each day since. Deaths peaked on July 27 (date of death, 7 day rolling average) and is on the decline as well.
I see now, date of onset vs. date of report.
The 7 day moving window is supposed smooth out those differences.
One word of caution, when you look at totals
Date of onset says Aug 3, 218,000.
Date of report says Aug 18 241,000.
So somehow, in the next 15 days, 23000 need to be accounted for (plus new cases). So the very minimum number would 1500 cases per day (average next few days) plus any new cases. Bottom line, I would not bet on that trend line.
Makes it tough to see trends, but if you look at the cumulative reports, the line is not curving down (for total cases or total deaths). Even the predicted lines for "date of onset" is not curving down.
Also, even data of onset is very spikey. Date of report could be chalked up to the weekend (low staffing) - but doesn't explain the date of onset.
Using your best numbers, COVID is only tied for heart disease (ignoring today's one day spike).
Bottom line, IMHO, there is some hope for Georgia - in that things are leveling off (and no longer growing exponentially). Welcome to the new normal?
To avoid conflating COVID-19 cases with all other causes of death, has there a statistically significant increase in the TOTAL death rate? No one reports that and my cynical mind tells me it's because it's not news-worthy. The people who are dying would have died anyway, and at the same rate.
Well you can do basic math and that's good.
But did it occur to you that Heart disease killed more people than coronavirus in GA in January, February,March, April, May, June & July. And heart disease will kill more people than coronavirus in September, October, November and December also. So, yes during August, coronavirus killed more people than heart disease in Georgia. We're all aware that this is a major health threat. So what exactly was your point again? Did you actually have a point? Or was it just an emotional outburst?
How can you be sure that coronavirus will kill more people than heart disease in August? August isn't even done yet.
According to the Georgia Department of Pubic Health, new cases (onset of symptoms, 7 day rolling average) peaked on July 11, and has been declining sharply each day since. Deaths peaked on July 27 (date of death, 7 day rolling average). More interestingly is to scroll through the complete list of deaths, which shows age and presence of co-morbidity. One most scroll a long long way to get past the 80+ years old with co-morbidity. Almost none are sub-50 with no co-morbidity. In round numbers, the probability of a healthy person of dying in Georgia from Covid is zero. And this is with mostly everything mostly open. You are personally welcome, of course (and in fact encouraged), to permanently self isolate in your hermetically sealed bunker choking on your saliva soaked face mask. But the rest of us intend to get on with our lives.
The media lied to make people panic about covid? I am as shocked as Louie was to find there was gambling going on at Rick's Cafe! Developing a good media bullshit detector? It's easy, the answer is yes the people in media are nothing but bullshit. If the person claim the media is the 5th estate they are evil and full of bullshit.
This.
And Nick, hedging with this "Covid-19 is a tough story" crap just rings hollow. Lots of jobs are tough. Do it right or find another line of work.
And Nick, hedging with this “Covid-19 is a tough story” crap just rings hollow. Lots of jobs are tough. Do it right or find another line of work.
I think this is a turn. The "numbers are tough" narrative will now grow and persist for a few weeks to months while the old "Holy Shit! We're all gonna die!" narrative gets scrubbed and, in about a year's time, Fauci dons his flight suit and answers questions under the "Mission Accomplished" banner.
https://babylonbee.com/news/study-finds-more-americans-trust-dr-pepper-than-dr-fauci
Shorter Nick: Our credibility is in the shitter! No biggie, we'll just blame a recent disease outbreak. That'll fool 'em!
But wait...what fate awaits the clingers, Reverend? 🙂
That other 'faker' just goes on and on about January. His 'schtick' is getting old. But you.... 🙂
As if there weren't enough '2 groups of people', the media in general has created yet another grouping.
1] Those who believe every headline and story no matter how nonsensical or unsupported it is. But only if it supports an opinion they downloaded from their favorite politician.
2] Those who immediately assume that every damn story is written with an ulterior motive, false or misleading... and double that if it doesn't support their political opinion.
No political persuasion is immune from either, and there are few remaining people who apply principles of reason and double-checking sources along with healthy skepticism.
" people in media are nothing but bullshit."
Gillespie would have you believe this was caused by a virus.
But there's really no excuse for journalism as sloppy and misleading as the August 13 ABC News segment
Phbbbbbt. Why would you bother making up an excuse if you didn't care about reporting the truth in the first place?
I don't agree. The issue is that they think they already know the truth. They thus have a moral obligation to make sure everyone else knows this truth and to shutdown the voices of any purveyors of the "alternate" truth. There can be no alternate truth. Just the truth.
That's why this is even worse than simply being sloppy. This moral mission SJW bullshit has taken over the media. They no longer think that they, the elite smart college educated journalists, need to report so that they can be educated. No. They believe, wholeheartedly, that their platform exists to educate and guide the rubes all around them.
It's a sad sad state. There's a contingent of "leftist" media that sees this and is appalled by it. But it's a very small group.
I don’t agree.
With my means. The ends agree. Why would you bother making up an excuse for reporting the God's honest truth?
Motivation matters when constructing the counter-argument. Particularly when trying to sway the opinions of others. I'll not get anywhere with the "they don't care about the truth" with liberal friends. Remember, the SJWs are all about the FEELZ. The emote. Certainly they "care". It's the core of their image. So don't attack them on "care". Attack them on reason...and their inability to see any truth but their own...and furthermore, their inability to believe they could be wrong.
Reason is the tool of the white supremacist. Everyone knows that people of color have no motivation to use impericism or rationality. They could but why should they? They'd be selling out to the man.
Sadly, I think you are correct. Other than the part about some of the leftist media being appalled - I am not sure I have seen evidence of that.
Matt Taibbi comes to mind, but examples are few and far between.
Yes. This is the definition of bullshit. It makes no difference whether the statement is true.
Of all the gaffes, errors, and outright lies to call any or all parts of the media on, why does Reason decide to go with the one that's half true?
Is this how we're going to be forced to let the chicken little retards head-down, toe-in-the-dirt, not-apologize their way back to the adults table? It's Jimmy from down the street's fault, because he told a bigger fib?
Somehow everyone wants to turn this into a dichotomy. Either we have an out of control pandemic, or we have zero to fear.
Just as idiotic to pick the other one. But hey, that's Reason for you.
Typically its the Trumpian Republicans that are the fear mongers.
We are supposed to fear Muslims, Mexicans, Hispanics, independent women, liberals, socialists, democrats, media, the Clintons, the Obamas, Arabs, Iranians, Palistinians, (apparently not Turks, Russians, Saudis or Philipines - strongman leaders and all) but anyone else that has skin color other than pasty white. Oh, forget about kids, teachers, union members, protesters.
Man, so many walls to build, so little time (till November)
Somehow everyone wants to turn this into a dichotomy. Either we have an out of control pandemic, or we have zero to fear.
No. You're just as disingenuous as the fucksticks peddling doom. "I should be able to go to the grocery store without a mask." is not a condemnation of any and all fear and it shouldn't be interpretted as such.
“I should be able to go to the grocery store without a mask.”
Your right, I'm trying to apply logic and deduce the reasons why some refuse the mask.
Course the anti-maskers could just humor the rest of us and put on a mask that does no harm and can be removed, burned, or whatever upon leaving the public area.
Or they could be an ass.
I saw on the news this morning that there was record-breaking heat in California - hottest day they've had in 87 years or some shit. I guess the records only go back 86 years. When you call something "record-breaking" and then immediately cite the actual record, I don't think you're aware any more of the shit you're spewing.
Often they refer to the record for that day only. So they are right but its BS since the intent is scary climate change .
One of the untold secrets about hottest day ever is that last century thermometers were mercury, so the settling time for a high was roughly the hottest hour during the day. Now they have digital sensors that sample every minute, so a single high gust on a warm day can set a new high. They are completely different measuring units.
They actually adjust for changes in measuring. Of course that leads to conspiracy theories that they manipulating the data.
However, there is litterally zero scientific papers that support the idea that climate change is not man made. Its just the Trumpian "I don't believe its not man made". We'll, your belief and two nickles will get me a dime. You're literally no better, and maybe worse than the news media you despise.
Challenge. Find that peer reviewed, scientific paper that states a Hypothesis (Climate change is happening because of .... lama farts in the Andeas - or whatever), Documents how they collected data, what data they got, and how they interpreted the data to prove the hypothesis. I have looked, no success so far.
There is literally zero scientific evidence that Zeus didn't do it either.
There's no issue to be taken with adjusting raw numbers for changes in technology. There *is* issue to be taken with the curious phenomenon that the adjustments are basically unidirectional and that the cumulative adjustments over time track very closely with the measured increase in CO2.
""However, there is litterally zero scientific papers that support the idea that climate change is not man made""
I have never seen a thesis that said the ice age was man made.
You can't prove it wasn't!!!!!!
What it tells me is that it was hotter 88 years ago. It must be getting cooler in those parts.
Death Valley recorded 132 deg in 1917 or something like that.
That reading has been disputed. I believe they think it was more like 129 (not to worry, its a dry heat).
The current reading of 130 was in a shaded box by electronic automated measurements.
Of course it could be like the measurement of the speed of light. It seems to be going down (if you just look at the reported speeds). However, if you look at the accuracy of the measurement device, you'll see all the measurements are withing the margins of error for that device.... just on the high side.
When in doubt, round up!
As more people get immunity and return to the workforce without excessive concern for protection or contagion, the dems will push hysteria that "There is no proven immunity to the virus" and "Even children can have long term complications." This will get more shrill and desperate over the next few weeks.
The way to debunk this is to fight them not our allies, and don't preach to the choir. Or hey, preach sister:
That balloon has been floated.
The problem with the theory that you can get this multiple times is that there are not that many people that have gotten in multiple times. A handful at best.
It seems we might loose the anti-bodies to fight COVID-19 after a few months BUT our body remembers how to make them and produces them faster the next time around. So, much much milder symptoms.
The question become how infectious do we become?
"The problem with the theory that you can get this multiple times is that there are not that many people that have gotten in multiple times. A handful at best."
You got a cite for any of that?
Best I can come up with is this:
https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2020/07/24/covid-reinfection
Bottom line, the number of people who claim re-infection is very very small vs. the number of people infected (just once).
Way I see it, if there truly are as many infections as reported, if there was no or limited immunity, we’d see more than the anecdotal re-infection. They will have to prove the re-infections weren’t false positives.
See, I think they'll take the opposite tactic and claim that Trump's incompetence sank the economy over a virus that was never really that deadly, and they were opposed to lockdowns all along.
the real question is not a matter how many died that day but how many were on deaths door for a month or more. They are trying to equate opening up with increased deaths but many have been ill for a while now. If people died the second they got it that would matter otherwise teh numbers are meaningless
If people died the second they got it that would matter otherwise teh numbers are meaningless
It astounds me how many people, including healthcare professionals don't get this and even act like they just stepped out of The Ring or something. They say the incubation period is ~2 weeks or *up to* 2 weeks and I've had medical professionals, a week later say "Those numbers don't mean anything, the incubation period is 2 weeks." like the virus and the human immune system work a 9-5 shift and never put in any overtime. When would you ever trust a doctor to tell you the time on anything like that accurately?
Its also a chain reaction. You infect 2 people, then they infect 2 people each etc. etc.
Also there is a lag in reporting the deaths (that's why they do 7 day average).
Georgia is doing a nice rise since July 4th ish. From about 14 deaths a day, to 71.
So what you're saying is that Georgia did a bang up job at flattening the curve early on so that they spread the inevitable deaths out over a longer period of time? Wasn't that the point--to not overwhelm hospitals with everyone who's gonna die dying at once?
July 4th ish. From about 14 deaths a day, to 71.
Thank you. This is the exact sort of abject stupidity to which I was referring. You fire six shots at the barn, draw a circle*ish* around the three that actually hit the barn, and act like you know your head from a hole in the ground. When even mildly retarded children would recognize that you wouldn't know your ass from a hole in the ground and just interpretted the vague data the way you liked.
The numbers have been meaningless from the outset...
I stopped listening to "the numbers" when they included traffic accidents and shootings as Communist Chinese Virus deaths.
You stop listening to the numbers? Don't be dumb like Trump.
Numbers have meaning. Even with one or two questional people added to the list (I believe motorcyclist who was COVID positive crashed and was listed as a COVID death). We are talking 1% error rates.
Of course I noticed you just threw out some facts without any numbers to argue against believing the numbers. Your lack of detail doesn't make for a good argument.
Next you will tell everyone you don't care about the election outcome because its just meaningless numbers.
We are talking 1% error rates.
Talk about throwing out unsupported and meaningless numbers. The false positive and false negative rates are nowhere near this level. If you consider just false negatives or false positives, there are a couple of tests that are below that amount but that's specifically ignoring known errors.
Journalists. I'm a chemist, and if I didn't pay attention to the math things won't work or even may blow up. Journalists can all scream numbers all day long, but mathematical relationships elude them. Just as Mr. Biden said, "we believe in truth, not just facts."
Forty years of blurring the lines between reporting and editorials.
Please give the man credit for the few sentences he does manage to get out; "We choose truth OVER facts".
Parsed, it means he does NOT choose facts.
So, despite being a democrat, he has spoken the truth once at least.
And the White House is using alternative facts.
Because we have brain we can parse the numbers ourselves.
Every state has a dashboard that tells you what the current state of COVID-19 infections are in that state and typically charts so trends become apparent.
Texas is pretty cool because they also document the capacity of the hospitals - Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. A is something like normal capacity. B is you cut elective surgery and free up beds. C is something like tent city in the parking lot (I kid). What Texas is saying, yes, there is a spike, but still within the limits we can handle.
One of the reasons they went into journalism is precisely because they suck at math. Just like lawyers. Add a math 499 Probability and Statistics course to their required curriculum, and the journalism schools would completely collapse.
Med school as well.
Now they have biomedical engineers that bridge the science with the medicine.
Actually that's what worries me about Dr. Faucci. He might be a good doctor (I have no idea) but he doesn't understand the math behind pandemics. The growth can be modeled (and the models verified against past data). More interesting is the studies NIH has done modeling mask usage vs. death rate.
How do you KNOW that he does not understand the statistics of epidemics?
How do you account for different models predicting different outcomes?
Put your politics aside and follow the crumbs on the ground.
keep calling out the liars.
whole article. name names you'll be a hero.
So a couple of days ago the headlines SCREAMED "California hits 600,000 infections!" I was shocked, so I went the state site. I confirms, over 600,000 cases!
But wait... does that mean CURRENT infections? Or does it mean TOTAL infections since the pandemic started? Quite frankly, I can't tell. The data is not there. It just says "infections". But considering that Los Angeles County, the largest county by a significant margin, had a TOTAL cases of around 225,000, my logical guess is that the state also means TOTAL cases.
So that's what we have, scaremongering by the media and the state government. Reporting every increase in total infections as being some sort of milestone. Parading cumulative numbers as if they were current infections is bullshit. There's no other way to call this than to call it scaremongering. The state wants us to panic.
Note that I am NOT a denier! Fuck you all who think this is all made up. But just because it's real does not mean it's okay to lie about it. We need to stop with the black and white outlook. Just because a Democrat governor says one thing does NOT mean it's all a hoax. And just because some people on Team Red doubt it does NOT mean the media should be issuing grossly misleading numbers. Fuck both sides.
Exactly what a denier would say.
Fuck both sides.
Fuck you. The hoax side means you can wear a mask or not, take your family to a restaurant or on vacation or not, take your kids out of school or leave them in, lock your parents and grandparents in a home or help them shelter in place. The hyperbolic lockdown side explicitly and specifically wants to restrict those freedoms even from people who definitively don't have the virus, won't catch it, and don't care if they do.
Your 'both sides' narrative is equivocating rain dancers and with the practice of human sacrifice.
Fuck you.
Has anybody here actually denied its existence, or were most of us where you are now since the beginning?
it makes him feel superior to both sides. His whole shtick is acting sanctimonious over everyone else.
Yeah. I like to both sides as much as anybody, but when it comes to COVID policy, fuck the democrats with a rusty bayonet. We'll be dealing with the economic and various unintended consequences of their gross negligence and unapologetic power mongering for decades. This is going to come with 9/11 levels of new government intrusion and civil rights abusing policy that will never go away. The next time they decide to put the entire world on house arrest for their own good will be even more frivolous than this one was and they will have already lubed up the general populace to just lie there and take it. Just like their reaction to that cataclysm, nothing good will come of this.
And fuck the president. If we had locked down the country for real and he personally ASKED everyone to wear a mask when in public, washed their hands often, clean up the areas around themselves we would about been done with this in about 3 weeks.
Instead, we drag it out to the point that EVERYONE is fatigued by the semi-shutdown with the anti-maskers finding any excuse not to wear a mask.
Leadership my ass.
Before COVID we already had $1,000,000,000,000,000.00 deficits. Pretty soon we are talking real money. All under Republican watch.
So we're going with "if he just been a real tyrant early on, the virus would have magically disappeared!"
Please show me a single citation of someone making a claim as absurd as the idea that you could have stopped the spread of the virus dead in its tracks in 3 weeks with a complete lock down.
I can't tell you how many stupid comments I read a day, but that's a doozy.
I love how everyone is citing the deficits under the Republicans as if there's a single Democrat who is suggesting with a straight face that we should spend even one solitary penny less. Fuck the Republicans for going along with any of it, but you only need to look at blue state governors to know that that figure would be at least double (still all funneled directly through the banks) if the democrats had the reins.
I'm sure if Donald Trump had declared de facto martial law back in January (in the immediate aftermath of his impeachment) on the basis of 'secret information' he had from the intelligence community that contradicted everything that the WHO and the CDC were saying about this virus at the time, that the media would have covered that in a mature and responsible manner.
""If we had locked down the country for real and he personally ASKED everyone to wear a mask when in public, washed their hands often, clean up the areas around themselves we would about been done with this in about 3 weeks."'
Bullshit.
Imagine hating Donald Trump so much that you get mad when he isn't even more of a petty infantile tyrant than he already is.
FWIW, I have been tracking the numbers on worldometers. I dunno if they are the best site or not; I just stumbled onto them early on.
As of yesterday they are showing CA as having 628K total cases, of which 366K are active cases.
Did you know that the cumulative number of COVID19 cases has been increasing? Aren't you concerned about that?
No, because it's a fucking coronavirus and there's nothing you can do to stop it.
Nothing.
For all the tongue-baths New Zealand has gotten, they've been on total isolation from the rest of the world, and they STILL get cases popping up whenever they lighten up their lockdowns even a hair. Vietnam now has a strain that's three times as strong as the early versions of this. This is going to be just like the Spanish Flu--it's going to run roughshod through the entire planet, and then settle down in to something relatively benign that kills about as many people as the common cold does every year. What's concerning is the naked power-grabs that have been implemented because people don't want to deal with reality.
Monotonically increasing at that...weird about that, eh?
Dependos on which curves you're watching. Actual cases will increase monotonically, but the government- and media-reported numbers sometime go down as someone fesses up that they screwed with the numbers and there are minor corrections downward. So those are not monotonically increasing.
"the cumulative number of COVID19 cases has been increasing? "
Wow. Did it ever occur to you that it is impossible for that number to go down?
This.
No, that had not occurred to him dude.

The COVID-19 story is a tough one, with new information emerging all the time. But the media, never infallible in the first place, seem increasingly prone to running stories that are not even internally consistent but instead are a hodgepodge of anxiety and apocalypticism.
Mr. Gillespie, true as far as you take it. But the bias in media that we have today is like nothing I have ever seen in America in my entire lifetime. Or yours. Notably, you fail to call this out. Why?
You know the answer, but I’ll play along. Orange Man Bad!
Gotta keep the narrative going, at least until November.
The media assailed can never admit they were wrong. They gave themselves fucking awards for trump russia... then pretend nothing happened when the narrative collapsed.
They are gaslighting on Sweden almost daily at this point. Florida and Georgia are still somehow worse than New Jersey and New York. It is fucking insane.
Every serious news outlet issues corrections.
You are the one who has been lied to about Russia. Trump said he was innocent and it was a hoax and you believed him, and that’s the extent of your engagement with the issue. Literally just a slogan he came up with. Hope you’re never on a jury.
"...You are the one who has been lied to about Russia. Trump said he was innocent and it was a hoax and you believed him, and that’s the extent of your engagement with the issue..."
Tell us about Elvis' alien love child on the grassy knoll, and that meeting between Hitler and Nixon, '56, in Uruguay!
And our resident idiot joins the conversation.
Poor Tony, just can’t get over the fact he was lied to about the Steele Dossier. He sooooo wanted it to be true.
No I don’t. It’s extremely disturbing. As is your total lack of government skepticism when even the absolute worst Republican is in charge.
Wait, you think believing the Intelligence Community is being skeptical of government? That explains a lot.
Do you ever sit and wonder how an obviously incredibly stupid and disturbed man can be right about literally everything and the entire rest of the world wrong?
I have never, not once, said he is right about everything. But you go on believing that they didn't lie about the veracity of the Steele Dossier to get a FISA warrant to tap one of their former assets.
Of course, the public knowledge that all of that is in fact true will completely elude you.
How inconvenient is today’s news for your mindless Trump worship and lies?
"Do you ever sit and wonder how an obviously incredibly stupid and disturbed man can be right about literally everything and the entire rest of the world wrong?"
Yes, I'm curious about your condition regularly
I'd say the media was this stupid and biased long before this year. But they have ramped up their attacks like they did in 2016 in order to overthrow a president and place a doddering old fool on the throne. That would be the toilet of DC throne.
I expect nothing worse than the pile of garbage the media has always presented us. It's just now we can refute it and they no longer care looking presentable and unbiased.
It is not the doddering old fool they wish upon the throne; it is the usurper Kween Kamala.
No need for messy suicides or mysterious heart attacks; a simple document from the cabinet, and the anointed one, fresh from the elites initiation ritual, takes over.
It is like the Pravda of old teleported their writers, producers and employees to NYT, WaPo, CNN, MSNBC, and like American media organizations. Americans are literally viewing American media like the Soviets and the rest of the world viewed Pravda 50 years ago.
We thought Pravda was the 'Mad Magazine' of the press....little did we know.
Yeah go back to Fox & Friends where you can get a healthy skeptical dose of “journalism” and long playful conversations with Trump about how handsome and slim he is looking lately.
Your city is burning to the ground because of the blacks!!!!
*sniff - sniff*
I live the smell of desperation in the comments; it smells like victory.
cues Gary Owen - - - -
Yep, and the Cuomo brothers yucking it up on CNN was some real hard-hitting journalism too.
Yep, and you can eagerly look forward to Joe Biden fielding questions from hard-hitting journalists like Cardi B. for the next 4 years.
Yeah. That is some really weird stuff. There are journalists talking about how Biden won't do interviews on regular news shows, but he's doing video chats with Cardi B. I'm from the Bronx. She's got a few cool songs and was probably a better than average stripper once upon a time, but why would I care about her political insights? If this isn't pandering I don't know what is. It's like someone decided Kamala to help him secure the black vote, so now find a Latina to get the Hispanic vote.
Isn't Cardi B the one who admitted that she would drug men to steal their wallets? Google....Yep...Cardi B revealed "that she would invite men to a hotel before drugging and robbing them."
We have bigger problems than Biden protecting his polling lead by being cautious.
Like what?
You supporting traitorous scum for president, for one.
I did not support Obama.

Covid has not ushered in a new age of sloppy journalism, it has only further exposed thg he one we have been living in for years. It is why trust in journalism has been at a low ebb and one of the reasons Trump's supporter are amused by him verbally attacking reporters.
"The coronavirus pandemic has ushered in an age of sloppy, inaccurate journalism and a heightened need for media literacy."
An attempt to be a bit more honest than, oh, Tony, would help also, but I'm not holding my breath.
Nor wearing a mask...
Has anyone been curious enough to see if they are even tracking how many of the sick and dead are/were regular "cloth face covering" wearers?
Because I know a whole lot of "cloth face covering" deniers who are still healthy and alive.
Specifically, has anyone at the CDC EVER addressed the issue of strongly recommending "cloth face coverings" for the Communist Chinese Virus, but saying the evidence is not strong enough for or against the real flu to make a comment?
Anyone?
"Has anyone been curious enough to see if they are even tracking how many of the sick and dead are/were regular “cloth face covering” wearers?.."
Pretty sure it was Darrell Royal who pointed out that passing the ball has three possible outcomes and two of those are bad.
If you make your living as a medical researcher or journalist, the same thing applies here:
1) They may make people sicker,
2) They may not have any measurable effect,
3) The may help.
If you find and/or report #1 or #2, that's not going to help your career.
It's normally attributed to Woody Hayes, not Royal.
But those 3 are not equally likely.
No 1 - haven't seen any evidence. I believe one study suggested (no data to back it up) that a cloth mask without a moisture barrier made for finer particles that hung in the air longer.
No 2 - the trending data suggest they do help;
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7314683/
No 3 is the most likely
"...To achieve this goal, government should establish a risk adjusted strategy of mask use to scientifically publicize the use of masks, guarantee sufficient supply of masks, and cooperate for reducing health resources inequities."
Gee, that certainly doesn't look like there's an agenda hidden in there, does it?
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article
"Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."
Do we honestly expect a different answer for COVID?
Gaiters may be WORSE than no mask. People are wearing bandanas like they're in a Western, or crocheted masks with gaping holes, etc. Stores are no longer even saying "masks" but a generic "face covering".
I wanna get one of those translucent veils like the belly dancers wear. I love those damn things. They're like the biggest fuck-you to muslim prudishness, aggressively checking that "must be modest" box while clearly doing everything but that in spirit. They're like censor bars on hentai, only highlighting the erotic bit.
I think I've gotten a bit off track here...
That's the thing. Not they're not. I've asked a couple of politicians and scientists this basic question. What's the formula or criteria to follow and determine if these things work? Crickets.
This is an indefinite measure. A non-pharma measure not rooted in science but the precautionary principles. There are far more studies supporting their inconclusive than those showing at best they may work.
The evidence certainly doesn't justify mandatory masks.
https://lmgtfy.com/?q=nih+study+effectiveness+of+masks+covid19
"..The study suggests that community mask use by well people could be beneficial, particularly for COVID-19.."
Yep, convinced a lefty scum!
According to my wife, the Oregonian reported almost 900 new cases in one day. Of course, if you read the right graph, which one has to actually look for, it becomes pretty obvious that that number of cases was three days worth of new cases. In other words, right in line with the overall decline in the number of new cases. Sloppy? Or intentional?
No doubt, someone, somewhere in Oregon, is freaking out.
Probably a lot of someones.
The complete abandonment of keeping context and perspective has been tossed out the window along with a century of established knowledge about virology.
Lockdown and masks. This is what we came up with. This is us being super enlightened.
smh
We didn't have enough masks in the pipeline, so lockdown was the only response. To the extent it slowed the infection rates, it seemed to have worked.
Seems to? No. And produce the facts.
That, and they lied to us about masks then, but we're supposed to believe them now?
Those weren't "lockdowns".
I wonder how many of those people demanding longer lockdowns would feel if things were *really* locked down. Being able to run to the grocery store or Wal-Mart or picking up your favorite take-out…those are all ways and places where you can infect other or be infected, even if you're wearing a mask.
If you want to save lives, you should be advocating for real lockdowns, not the half-assed lockdowns we had before.
I mean *really locked down*: no grocery stores, no Wal-Mart, no fast-food drive-throughs, no pizza delivery, no Uber-Eats or Door-Dash or whatever. No Amazon or Target online. No home delivery. No jogging, visiting a park, etc.
You’ll stay in your house or else–maybe, just maybe we’ll allow you to wander around in your own backyard (backyard only), if you have one. For food, what you’ll get is a government truck will deliver a box of food for one person to eat for a week, and drop off the boxes at your front doorstep based on the number of people in your household. Each week, you will be told to line your household up at the door, one at a time, so they can be counted; this will inform the number of food boxes dropped of at your house. An armed escort will accompany the delivery person to ensure that no one opens their doors while the delivery person is within 20 feet of the door. Don't do that, because you could get shot. The delivery personnel and their guards will be in full MOPP gear.
If someone in your house needs medical care, call 911 and an ambulance will be dispatched. People in full MOPP gear will pick up your sick loved one and take them away for treatment. If they live, you'll see them again.
The ONLY “essential” personnel will be those involved with treating COVID and for producing and delivering the food. These people will be issued uniforms and ID lanyards. So there’s no reason for anyone one else to ever venture outside of their house and anyone on the streets who is not in uniform obviously has no business being there, and will be subject to immediate detention in physical quarantine facilities.
Imagine a real lockdown for a few minutes. If you're serious about "saving lives" it's the only way right? And Trump would be a savior if he ordered this right? Because, hey, if it saves one life, it's worth doing right?
Only if a democrat is in the drivers seat.
ABC is full of it; got that.
Yawn.
age of sloppy, inaccurate journalism...
Is it really sloppy or are the media intentionally dishonest?
Same question for NY/NJ/PA/MI and the way they handled their state run nursing homes? Sloppy or intentional? And regardless of which, shouldn't somebody be held accountable?
And it gets better. Australia said 22 of its 25 deaths came from nursing homes. How in the fricken world did they let that happen given all that we know about this virus attacking that specific demographic in that setting?!?!
It's incomprehensible and inexcusable. Do they not read the fricken news from Sweden, Belgium, UK, Spain, Italy, Quebec, Ontario, NY, NJ, PA, and MI about the need to isolate them?
Nope. Instead the spectacular stupidity on display from NZ and AUS reveals they have not evolved with the data and simply locked down an entire country (2 cases in NZ) and region in Victoria.
Rather than surgically just, you know, protect the elderly!
Spikes aren't waves. And we'd better stop this crap about waves. A virus circulates so when you hide from it like a bunch of lunatic cowards it lies in wait. It needs hosts, no? So if there are none, it doesn't pack its bags. Viruses are 1.5 billion years-old. They can wait. What's another 60 days to them?
What a ridiculous strategy we employed once March. Sweden had it right all along.
Anyway. Appalling what I see in NZ/AUS.
Are you ever going to honestly report on the violent riots that have occurred in major cities? The theft, arson, robbery, assaults, and attempted murders?
How about some words for the CA blackouts directly caused by forcing renewable energy down their throats.
But we got a writeup on the post office. Woohoo!
Nick, my bull shit antennas have been on since March.
I've never been more pissed with public officials in my life.
Pure incompétence that has crossed over into malice.
And don't get me going with the pseudo-science about mandatory masks. I could punch a parent or official that puts those stupid things on kids. The lesson we've given them is a poor one.
Pant shitting adults have projected their fears onto them.
Those parents are using the best available information in order to try to protect the lives of others. Maybe they can fit in a moment to consider your feelings too.
No they're not.
The available information is already there.
Paediatricians and children's hospitals in North America have been saying it's SAFE for kids to go back to school and that influenza is the bigger threat.
Parts of Europe reopened in May with no problems. I've been open since June and no issues up until now.
Those parents are being ridiculous. Get off your asses and open the damn schools. The data and science makes it clear it's safe to do so.
Knock it off.
You're just lying to yourself to protect the ego of a president you will never meet.
I think you are lying to yourself about what other people think.
I doubt seriously that Rufus cares about Trump, seeing as he's Canadian.
What is wrong with Tony?
Awesome, so you have data that refutes the effectiveness of masks? Or are you just pulling facts from your ass?
How is that not pure incompetence?
There are various NIH studies on the effectiveness (or in-effectiveness of masks).
Try this one:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7186508/
Note they model the transmission of COVID and verify the model against real world data - mostly NY data.
You're the very example Nick is talking about. Since the 1920s they've been examining masks and the body of evidence has shown them to be ineffective. Of course, all in the context of influenza but it still applies here. This was COMMON scientific knowledge.
Now all of a sudden, somehow a flip was switched (the parties switched) and the prevailing perception is masks were always effective!
There are over 40 studies going back to the 1920s available that I've gone over. Can't link them all. Maybe you should get off your ass and actually look those up. I've spent a lot of time on this...so you can do it too.
The vast majority conclude they're inconclusive. Period.
But here's one for you:
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2006372
I will read this in detail later.
But....the point is this: There's some evidence to suggest - meh - go ahead especially if it's voluntary and you show symptoms.
The evidence does NOT support mandating them. Even their conclusions basically admit it's a non-pharma measure rooted in the precautionary principle.
The premise of wearing a mask is to stop the spread based on two key assumptions: One are the droplets. Droplets tend to fall to the ground and don't act as a trajectory. And even if it did and one was exposed to it, it doesn't mean a person will be infected. It's unclear to what extent droplets play a role. But in the meantime....wear a mask!
The other is the assumption asymptomatic people are 'super spreaders' but as the WHO and plenty of scientists have cautioned, more research is needed on this. While they can be spreaders, we don't know to what degree and extent. From what I can tell, they're leaning it's rare.
Strike two....but wear a mask!
Just in case!
Not rooted in science. Just prevention.
Which tells me, you don't give up part of your civil liberties based on these facts.
And again, the vast majority of studies say they're not effective. The medical masks are useless and the cloth ones have not been studied to any great detail. But if that idiotic study from Duke ranking masks is any indication, I'd say they're even more worthless than medical masks because the the study had N95s at #1 (which are construction tools and not designed for viruses and there are studies out there proving they're limited as well) and medical masks at #2. If those are at #2 then they undermined they're entire premise because what does that say about the effectiveness of cloth masks?
Wrap a towel around your head and poke some holes in it and you'll get the same effectiveness.
Whenever I see people talking into a clip like this one here to my write on this page, I laugh my ass off at the stupidity of it. The particles of viruses are so tiny, they're like vapour.
And spare me 'it's to be courteous' and 'protect others' angle. Based on what we know so far, it's just faux-virtue.
I have no problem if people want to wear them.
VOLUNTARILY.
Ok. Couple of things. One, there are other studies outside NIH you seem to cling to.
Two, it's from April. Data has changed significantly since then.
Three, all those equations reminds me of this quote:
Mathematics may be compared to a mill of exquisite workmanship, which grinds you stuff of any degree of fineness; but, nevertheless, what you get out depends on what you put in; and as the grandest mill in the world will not extract wheat flour from peascods, so pages of formulæ will not get a definite result out of loose data.”
…Thomas Henry Huxley
Again. Few studies flat out claim masks work. They all include caveats like masks are not a panacea and must be used with other (also arbitrary) non-pharma measures like social distancing.
You really need to expand your roster of studies.
On my data base, I've collected over 40 for both pro and con and the cons are winning.
I hope their models were not thrown together by grad students over the weekend, like some models that informed government policies...
Before Friday, March 20, Marina Kirkeide, who graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering in 2019, was a School of Public Health part-time research assistant working on HPV transmission for Kulasingam. On a gap year before starting Medical School at the University in fall 2020, Kirkeide also had a second job as a lab tech at St. Paul’s Regions Hospital. That Friday, Kulasingam called her and two other research assistants and asked if anyone was available to “work through the day and night” to get a COVID-19 model to Governor Walz the following Monday. They all jumped at the chance.
“I don’t think a lot of researchers get to work on something over the weekend and have public figures talk about it and make decisions based on it three days later,” says Kirkeide, who had to leave her hospital job to focus solely on modeling. She feels the responsibility of such a big project, too. “[In this situation] you don’t have the time to validate as much as you normally would. You want to get it right the first time. And your work has to be really, really quick.”
So, Nick, you just figured out it was "fake news?" Who said that before, like maybe three years ago?
All of journalism, academia, science, entertainment, and the entire rest of the civilized world are liars! Only the orange man tells the truth!
—Almost everyone here
You and con_fuse9 are almost literally the only ones mentioning Trump.
I think your head would explode if you understood that we don't think he tells the truth either. But you know, we can actually fucking read and comprehend scientific papers and information from multiple news sources to figure out when we're being lied to, instead of just emoting and feeling like we're being lied to.
You apparently can’t. My advice would be not to start with the premise that Republicans good, Trump good, disease not so bad. Or whatever. Stop having premises. You risk discarding facts you don’t like.
You sure embrace dichotomies.
This really is a tough time. At least Trump is not a liar.

Nik

An article about sloppy journalism claims Covid coverage “ushered in” sloppiness without even attempting to establish that there has been an increase in sloppiness associated with Covid reporting.

Please knock it off with the inflated fatality nonsense. The CDC changed the rules a while back to count any fatalities with a positive test or suspected to be from coronavirus as coronavirus fatalities. The rule used to be fatalities caused by the coronavirus. This inflated the count by a factor of ten https://americanmind.Org/essays/the-covid-coup/ .
If it burns it earns, if it bleeds it leads. Nothing changes, it's all about ad revenue, bringing in viewers and getting story clicks. Drama, chaos, confusion and fear is all the "news" is today.
The media has always hyped. The government, something quite similar.
Nothing new, here. It's all B.S.
The only thing to worry about is others believing (any of) it. And, of course, enforcing it.
As my longtime Usenet ally, Christopher Charles Morton, would put it, judging the threat of COVID-19 by going by what we see and hear in the media is like judging the intelligence and character of Black people by watching Birth of a Nation.
