Failing to "aggressively decarcerate and reduce the incarcerated population" is leading to masses of preventable deaths in prisons and jails and in the larger population, say Democratic lawmakers in a new letter calling on New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and governors of other states hardest hit by COVID-19 to take emergency action. "Each of you has the power to stop this preventable tragedy from being even more devastating."

"Prisons in your states have become incubators for COVID-19," write Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (D–Mass.), Cory Booker (D–N.J.), and several others to the governors of California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. They're asking governors to issue clemency or grant release to "adults age 50 and older, medically vulnerable populations with underlying conditions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, pregnant individuals, juveniles, and individuals with less than 1 year left on their sentence, irrespective of the offense," so long as these prisoners "don't pose a reasonable risk to public safety."

In the May 5 letter to Cuomo, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and National Governors Association Chair Larry Hogan, governor of Maryland, the representatives note that prisoners and staff at federal, state, and local correctional facilities have seen 28,300 cases of COVID-19 so far and 273 deaths. And, according to a recent American Civil Liberties Union study, failure to take emergency steps to reduce incarcerated populations could lead to 100,000 additional COVID-19 deaths among people inside and outside lockup.

Prisons & jails are amongst the worst #COVID19 hotspots. Failure to act urgently puts the lives of millions of incarcerated people at risk.

I'm calling on the @NatlGovsAssoc and governors in the hardest-hit states to prioritize #DecarcerationNow, before it's too late. pic.twitter.com/7pGY7C87gi

— Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (@RepPressley) May 5, 2020

"The health of our nation depends on the health and safety of our most vulnerable communities, particularly those in congregate settings such as corrections facilities where physical distancing is all but impossible," states the letter, which was also signed by Democratic Reps. Karen Bass (Calif.), Barbara Lee (Calif.), Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), and Nydia M. Velázquez (N.Y.).

"We strongly urge you to use your clemency and emergency powers to reduce the incarcerated population and limit the spread of this virus. With the stroke of a pen, you could help save the lives of tens of thousands of juveniles, elderly and medically vulnerable people held in custody at the state and local level."

I have been raising these concerns repeatedly with BOP and will continue doing so. This is why I have called for compassionate release for vulnerable incarcerated individuals who present no public safety risk. https://t.co/KG4KdxiBHW

Privilege isn't binary. Phoebe Maltz Bovy at Arc Digital on "Karenology":

Is "Karen"—or the similar "Becky"—an anti-racist protest against white ladies who call the cops at the drop of a hat? Or is it sexism posing as progressivism?

Why not, as that other meme says, both? […]

It's impossible to pin down "Karen" because the term has multiple meanings, varying according to context. The reason "Karen" is meant to be objectionable depends who's having the conversation about her and why. With the internet collapsing context, it isn't always clear. If you don't know whether the avatar and handle before you belong to a black woman; a white man; or an especially eloquent bot, how are you meant to know whether an ugh-white-women is emphasizing the "white" part or the "women" one? Are you witnessing righteous fury at weaponized white female fragility—or simply at the tendency of white feminists to repeat the mantra of Straight White Men as the source of all evil, eliding their own complicity or what have you—or is it about stigmatizing the sort of (older, or not that young) woman who DGAF about people-pleasing and demands to speak to the manager.

The "Karen" question is really the problem with ambivalent spots on the privilege hierarchy. A demographic that has more than some but less than others presents a dilemma in social justice understandings. It's as if there needs to be an official answer: either the term is A Slur, or it's Actually Fine. Either "Karen" is privileged or she's oppressed.

How popular clothing brands are coping with COVID-19. In short, not well. J. Crew even filed for bankruptcy earlier this week. Meanwhile, fashion merchandise on store shelves is rapidly declining in value as the outbreak carries on and people both stay at home and have less money to spend even if shopping online. The only sector surviving nicely is "off-price retailers and resale entities" like T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, reports The Fashion Law. "The T.J. Maxxes and Marshalls of the world and the growing number of digitally-native resale sites are being presented with what Credit Suisse analyst Michael Binetti has called 'the greatest buying environment for off-price in a decade.'"

the problem with ambivalent spots on the privilege hierarchy

        1. Squirrelloid   5 years ago

The very existence of that linked article depresses me. Racism is racism regardless of whether you're "punching" up or down. Stop "punching" on the basis of race. Oppression hierarchies are the dumbest mental construct imaginable - it just invites people to do nothing but place people into oppression categories and ignore everything actually relevant about them.

          1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   5 years ago

Giving up the race card would require us to judge people on the content of their character. Who would ever advocate such a thing?

            1. ElvisIsReal   5 years ago

Some day maybe we'll be woke enough to treat people as individuals no matter what their characteristics!

          2. Brandybuck   5 years ago

Racism is just a certain kind of bigotry. It's bigotry on the basis of race. But the Left has forgotten about the bigotry part, to them it's all about the power imbalance.

But bigotry is still universally bad. We need to use it more. Instead of calling someone racism or sexist or homophobic, just call them bigot. Then you don't have to worry about which way the power flows. Bigotry is bigotry regardless of who the bigot is.

            1. R Mac   5 years ago

it just invites people to do nothing but place people into oppression categories and ignore everything actually relevant about them.

I suspect that's the whole point. When you only have to consider people's worth based on where they fall in the "Progressive Stack" or their victim status you no longer have to deal with people as individuals with human rights but as "victims" or "oppressors." I suspect that makes it much easier to de-humanize ones political opponents, especially if you see them as "evil oppressors" instead of fellow human beings with their own thoughts, feelings, experiences and most importantly the same inalienable rights as you.

I was going to suggest that maybe "Karen" is just another social media buzzword fad... but that probably implies that I, myself, am either a "Karen" or an "anti-Karen". We obviously need more think-pieces and studies so that I know the nature and degree of my shameful privilege... or maybe I'm a victim here... PLEASE TELL ME INTERNET!

Wanna speak to my manager about it?

    3. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

      Hello.

Karen is a smug, privileged woman - sometimes armed a women's studies degree or the equivalent - who has too much time on her hands to invent notions of oppression that offend her snowflake sensibilities. Karen is more progressive than any other ideology and likes to drive in a vehicle that matches her inflated sense of worth and ego. Think Land Rover. Karen loves soccer not because it's a great game (ironically played by the mass poor) but because it signals her alleged expansive world view about cultures.

Karen is the one who will tell a chef in an Italian restaurant she's never had 'al dente pasta' and always had it soft and that's how she likes it. Karen is the one who will thoughtlessly take on any stupid feel good trend out there from women's marches to banning plastic bags to demanding women get paid equally to men for its own sake. And she will always be willing to showcase and broadcast her abject illiberal ignorance for all to see.

Maybe Karen is more millennial than Gen- X and may be the sort who likes to get a cleavage tattoo but more likely 'discreet' ones on their wrists with the names of their kids out of wedlock or pet racoon or ferret.

Karen always asks to speak to the manager rarely considering if it's an act worth keeping in their sack for really important things. If she 'feels' she's been wronged she will speak to the manager. Um, the last time I was here the kale was much more crispier. I want compensation for my soft kale'.

What's so difficult? I just rattled this off in one shot.

      1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

Basically, Karen is a bloody 'nyeh, nyeh, nyeh' and you'll know her when you see her.

On a positive note, Karen is a great reference for me on how not to raise my daughter.

      2. creech   5 years ago

Karen is the professor shouting "can we get some muscle here?"

"Karen is the one who will tell a chef in an Italian restaurant she’s never had ‘al dente pasta’ and always had it soft and that’s how she likes it."

I've experienced this several times, back when I worked at an Italian restaurant (college), and only once was it from a guy. Every other time it was a middle-aged or older woman.

        1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

"Every other time it was a middle-aged or older woman."

Not that they ever tip more than 10 to 15 percent for all that extra drama. Assuming they tip at all.

    3. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

This really should be a bigger scandal than it is. Ferguson has a complete hard-on for lockdowns--he recommended it for the swine flu and mad cow as well. The entire western world went into panic mode after he predicted that millions were going to pile up like cordwood if they didn't shut everything down. And yet here he is, breaking his own model so he could go bang his married commie thot.

Basically, every business that's gone under or is on the brink of going under, every person who can't pay their rent or bills, every domestic violence incident, every suicide, every addict who's fallen off the wagon, every local government and cultural institution that's seen its budgets go in the toilet, and every elderly person who's died in isolation in the last month and a half has this asshole to thank for their predicament, and he goes and does this.

What a fucking hero this Man of Science is. If he can't even be bothered to follow his own model, what the fuck are we even doing? Open the economy now and tell the pants-shitters to stay inside, so their precious immune system can get suplexed into the ground when they get the coof in the next wave. Those of us that have built up antibodies will go on with our lives and laugh at them discovering how natural selection actually works.

      1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

Every single GOD DAMN politician should feel shame and just open up.

        1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

If they could feel shame, they wouldn't be successful politicians in our society. You're asking the blind to describe a rainbow.

Doesn't mean they can't feel other emotions of course, Like fear.

          1. Nardz   5 years ago

            Examples need to be made.
Hell, Daddy Gov does it all the time - Ruby Ridge and Waco being two of the more spectacular incidences.
But unless some of these technocrats - politicians, media, NGO mandarins - are killed, they won't feel any fear.
            They'll only feel emboldened

            1. Nardz   5 years ago

This is just a game to these people right now.

I do know that a bunch of Detroit cops had some public event early on, and Detroit Metro had direct flights to China. But we’ve also had some of the most strict restrictions, so I’m really curious why we have so many cases here.

A Dallas hair salon owner in a contempt hearing for re-opening her business under lockdown told the judge that "feeding my kids is not selfish." Her comments came after the judge offered her the opportunity to avoid jail time by apologizing and admitting she her actions were wrong...

[Salon owner Shelly] Luther told the judge, "I have hairstylists that are going hungry because they'd rather feed their kids. So, sir, if you think the law is more important than kids getting fed then please go ahead with your decision but I am not going to shut the salon..."

Prior to her statement, Judge [Eric] Moye said she must see the errors of her ways and "understand that the society cannot function where one's own belief in a concept of liberty permits you to flaunt your disdain for the rulings of duly elected officials."

"That you owe an apology to the elected officials who you disrespected by flagrantly ignoring, and in one case defiling, their orders you now know obviously apply to you," Moye lectured...

Lucia reported that the judge ordered her jailed for seven days and fined $500 for every day the salon remains open. So far, the fine stands at $3,500...

In a letter to the New York Times, which was written in response to an editorial board article titled, “Investigate Tara Reade’s Allegations,” Tolchin wrote, “I totally disagree with this editorial.”

“I don’t want an investigation. I want a coronation of Joe Biden,” he declared. “Would he make a great president? Unlikely. Would he make a good president? Good enough. Would he make a better president than the present occupant? Absolutely.”

“I don’t want justice, whatever that may be. I want a win, the removal of Donald Trump from office, and Mr. Biden is our best chance,” Tolchin added, concluding, “Suppose an investigation reveals damaging information concerning his relationship with Tara Reade or something else, and Mr. Biden loses the nomination to Senator Bernie Sanders or someone else with a minimal chance of defeating Mr. Trump. Should we really risk the possibility?”

In 2004, current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, current US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, had an average net worth of $3.1 million. Ten years later, that number had increased to somewhere between $9.2 million and $36.5 million.

One source of the windfall, according to a new book from Peter Schweizer, was a 2008 gift from Chao’s father, James Chao, for somewhere between $5 million and $25 million. But this gift could be seen as more than just a gift. It may have been acquired, according to Schweizer, thanks to the couple’s fealty to China, the source of the Chao family fortune. And that fealty may have occurred at the expense of the nation they had pledged to serve.

I did Biden. Not skipping Pelosi.

According to her 2011 financial disclosure statement, Pelosi received between $1 million and $5 million in partnership income from Matthews International Capital Management LLC, a group, which brags about its “singular focus on investing in Asia.” Paul Pelosi was listed as one of the Directors of Matthews International Capital when it was formed in 2010. Funds managed by the company include the Asian Growth and Income Fund, the China Dividend Fund, the Pacific Tiger Fund, and the China Fund.

The description of the Matthews China Fund reads in part, “Under normal market conditions, the Matthews China Fund seeks to achieve its investment objective by investing at least 80% of its net assets, which include borrowings for investment purposes, in the common and preferred stocks of companies located in China.” The most recent SEC report for Matthews International shows huge stock holdings in Chinese companies like BiliBili, China Mobile, Huazhu Grou, Weibo and Yum China Holdings. Matthews has $24 billion in investments under management.

So how is Twitter not exercising editorial control over the content that goes on its platform? All of the social media platforms are declaring what is "true" and what is "fake" and kicking whatever they think is "fake" off their platforms for the common good as they see it. That is of course their right. But with that right comes the corresponding responsibility for that content. They can't have or shouldn't be able to have it both ways. If they want section 230 immunity, then they should have no ability to control what goes on their platform beyond deleting illegal material. If they want to exercise editorial control and decide what is real and what is fake, then they should lose their section 230 immunity and be treated like any other publisher.

    1. Chipper Morning Wood's low T value   5 years ago

Your point raises questions I would like to see answered, specifically about what constitutes editorial control.

      1. John   5 years ago

I would like those questions answered as well. The law is way behind reality in this case. I get it that exercising some control at the macro level doesn't make you a publisher. If I run a platform that talks about cars and I kick anyone off who wants to talk about politics or some other topic, I don't think I am exercising "editorial control" in the way I am talking about above. But the big social media platforms go beyond that and exercise what I would call "micro control" and are actively engaging in policing not just subject but the truth and falsity of the content. That makes them publishers. If the law doesn't currently recognize that distinction, it needs to.

Failing to "aggressively decarcerate and reduce the incarcerated population" is leading to masses of preventable deaths in prisons and jails and in the larger population...

Letting prisoners die or letting them out, either way it's bad for business. Of course, releasing prisoners still likely requires some kind of continued contact, so that segment of the criminal justice industrial complex would have their job security continue. On the other hand, there are always new laws to be passed and new regulations to be strictly enforced to refill any prisons whose population is wiped out by death. (Prison workers are, apparently, expendable.)

Not locking everyone up in the first place is, of course, not on the table, as we've seen with strict enforcement of mitigation policies.

The sense that this once-in-a-century nightmare is really one big missed opportunity is pervasive among progressives in Washington, too. For those on the farthest end of the liberal spectrum in Congress, the pandemic has provided them with “a sense of hope,” according to Politico. “They see a federal government finally willing to spend massive sums on long-neglected health and social programs, and say it’s time to push for policies that would otherwise never stand a chance of a floor vote,” the report read.

A pandemic that could have possibly and still may for all we know kill 100s of thousands or even millions of Americans provided Progressives "with a sense of hope". But leftism isn't a death cult or anything and they would never murder us if they had the ability and doing so would give them what they want or anything. No, they just find hope in the thought of the deaths of millions of innocent people because they love the people that much or something.

Karen studies is just another example of pampered people with too much on their hands trying to reinvent the wheel. Like the FAKEdemic. We outsmarted ourselves. We know so much we tried to reinvent how to handle these things when it seems more and more a more classical approach of moving to isolate and protect the vulnerable would have been just as effective.

But noooooo, we had to pretend we were smarter (and more humane) than that. We had to cut the bike in half and shut down the economy. It'll go down in history as one of the most retarded things we've ever down. And we have the gall to laugh at alchemists? I THINK NOT!

"Karen" isn't about the skin color of the Karen. Or her sex. It's about a certain non-working class progressive mindset common in blue county suburbs. Karens tend to be white women, but they can also be Black women, Asian men, Latino transgender, etc.

"Karen" is about being overly concerned with people who don't behave like them. Who call the cops on people walking their dogs, that Black mayor who went and yelled at the kids playing in an empty lot, the gender-uncertain Carin who wrote a lengthy screed about how baking was a privilege, the gay man who comments on every facebook post containing a picture of someone without a mask, the dude yelling at his friends over Skype when he thinks they're taking too many shopping trips outside their safe zone home, etc.

    They're all Karen.

    1. Brandybuck   5 years ago

Also, forgot to add. Karens must always have privilege of some sort. Someone who doesn't have to work because her husband does, or does works from her kitchen table normally and doesn't know why factory workers can't just do the same, shops for everything online, and who thinks standing in line at Whole Foods to get a cup of non-GMO flour for her online cooking class is the height of oppression.

I use the pronoun "her", but Karen could just as easily be "he", "zhe" or "zhey". That Karens tend to be female is just the natural consequence of late wave feminism.

Sorry, this incessant whining about Facebook posts you object to is simply not pretentious enough for me.

Right but you're whining about it.

            1. mtrueman   5 years ago

"Right but you’re whining about it."

I wasn't whining. I was expressing my sadness over Brandybuck, often a commenter worth reading, who has sunk to the level of following the rest of the idiots here, like yourself, who are squirming with rage over Facebook posts and other such trivial matters. I understand how the idiots let themselves be played, but I expected more from Brandybuck.

Karen is an ethnicity found in Myanmar and Thailand. They are much like the Kashmiris or Palestinians, groups that got a raw deal after the breakup of the British empire circa 1945.

Their situation is tragic and I’m saddened to see normally thoughtful posters like yourself obsessing over the trivial activities of privileged Americans while ignoring the original Karens who are much more deserving of your attention."

You know what? Fuck the damned prisoners. The bottom line is that they made a choice to commit crime. So my response to AOC and her mini-me's: Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Tough shit.

Depends if being deliberately exposed to a potentially dangerous disease is part of the sentencing, I guess.

Ok, this Karen thing is seriously getting out of hand. Clearly, these people have too much time on their hands. Maybe we can let the prisoners loose and stick the Karen's in prison.

  33. Longtobefree   5 years ago

so long as these prisoners "don't pose a reasonable risk to public safety."

Well, by definition they pose a risk, or they wouldn't be in prison. On the other hand, a parent providing for their child by working should definitely be put into a C19 incubator.

    AOC = BS

  34. Ken Shultz   5 years ago

"They're asking governors to issue clemency or grant release to "adults age 50 and older, medically vulnerable populations with underlying conditions such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, pregnant individuals, juveniles, and individuals with less than 1 year left on their sentence, irrespective of the offense," so long as these prisoners "don't pose a reasonable risk to public safety."

To be honest, I'm having a hard time getting past seeing AOC's and Cory Booker's names on that. Just because they want something doesn't mean it's wrong, but if I ever find myself accidentally agreeing them, I'll be sure to double check I'm not just completely wrong.

Incidentally, if you want to avoid being locked up in prison because you committed a violent felony, there's an easy way to avoid that. Can you guess what it is?

That's right. If you don't want to be locked up in prison because you committed a violent felony, don't commit a violent felony.

And the following is self-contradictory bullshit:

"They're asking governors to issue clemency or grant release . . . irrespective of the offense," so long as these prisoners "don't pose a reasonable risk to public safety."

"Irrespective of offense--so long as they don't pose a reasonable risk to public safety"? He may have shot someone in the face in an armed robbery--and bragged about it afterwards--but that was six years ago. He hasn't shot anybody in six years now! Actually, whatever fundamental flaw makes someone shoot a liquor store cashier in the face doesn't go away because you lock them up in prison. Yes, it's the nature of their crime that tells us whether they're a reasonable risk.

Meanwhile, incapacitation may be a perfectly legitimate reason to hold convicted felons in prison, but it isn't the only reason. There are still arguments like retribution, restitution, and deterrence. Sociopaths need for there to be negative consequences in order for them not to violate other people's rights. "Retribution" only in this specific sense, may be a perfectly appropriate part of the justice system, for that reason, which is where deterrence comes into play, too. We know better than to argue that if the cost of perpetrating felonies goes down, OTBE the number will remain the same.

If the government has any legitimate purpose at all, it is to protect our rights, and protecting our rights from violent criminals is essential to that. Calling on the government to release duly convicted violent criminals may be anarcho-capitalist but it isn't small state libertarian. One of the best reasons to legalize cannabis is so that the government can concentrate their resources on convicting people for legitimate crimes and locking them up for longer periods of time.

    1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

Very well said, Ken. Particularly the part about the multiple purposes of punishment in the criminal justice system.

She's one of the most partisan of the justices. It's her goal to survive the election so a Democrat can fill her vacancy.

Trump's appointment of Gorsuch is the single greatest thing he has accomplished as president and even though I will vote libertarian, I definitely hope he wins again so there can be a chance of Gorsuch 2.0. That alone will make Trump a truly great president.

"The "Karen" question is really the problem with ambivalent spots on the privilege hierarchy. A demographic that has more than some but less than others presents a dilemma in social justice understandings. It's as if there needs to be an official answer: either the term is A Slur, or it's Actually Fine. Either "Karen" is privileged or she's oppressed."

Is this person writing censorship guidelines for Facebook or something?

Maybe she's writing a manual so that social justice warriors will know why they're policing other people's speech--because she thinks that's important?

Here's my middle finger. Take a good look. It's just for you. Stuff like this is why punk rock bands used to write songs like "Code Blue", "I Saw Your Mommy and Your Mommy's Dead", and "Last Caress".

Privilege isn't binary. Phoebe Maltz Bovy at Arc Digital on "Karenology":
[giant wall of block-quoted text from article that I'll spare everyone by not copy/ pasting here]

Is it just me or was the quote from the Arc Digital article a whole lot of word salad to end up saying basically nothing at all?

I'm guessing Phoebe was recently called "Karen" in an internet comment section somewhere and got her panties in a wad, so she decided to right a whole bunch of nothing about it. And of course she had to frame it in terms of "privilege," "oppression," and "the privilege hierarchy" because her Victimhood Studies degree doesn't allow her to think about anything in any other terms.

  41. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

A real, honorable, respectful politician and human being finds a quiet exit plan to this lockdown hysteria and madness.

The fact you have pyshco left-wingers like AOC wanting to save prisoners from corona while cops arrest people for not social distancing, shows you lost the plot.

Look up the Judge in Texas (Eric Moye) who put a female salon owner in prison for not kissing the ass of the state calling her 'selfish' for wanting to feed her kids.

    He's a Democrat.

    Oh, there's a surprise.

    1. Ron   5 years ago

I read that article and now I'm wondering how it is a crime to not kiss up. If you are let off for apologizing that means not apologizing a crime since when is not apologizing a crime. to apologize or not should fall under first amendment rules and you can't be prosecuted for that. that is until now anyway

      1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

Where's the ACLU in all this?

Sounds like a case for Institute for Justice no?

Go watch it on youtube. He called her 'selfish' and slapped a $3500 fine on her for not kissing his sorry ass.

        Now go read his bio.

He's a piece of shit. Change my mind.

Much as I dislike Cuomo, he should tell AOC and the others to tend to their own knitting. And probably not in such polite terms. They need a sharp lesson in federalism.

  45. drisco304   5 years ago

People should be more concerned about Cuomo's Health Department (sic) forcing nursing homes to accept Covid-19 positive patients. New York nursing home death toll at 5000 and rising.

"People should be more concerned about Cuomo..."
