Trump: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
What the president gets right and wrong.

President Donald Trump "saved the United States," says former Trump adviser Steve Bannon.
He's one of the "smartest, most clever, and successful" presidents, says Fox's Jeanine Pirro.
No, he's "dumb and racist," says comedian Seth Meyers, and guilty of "rampant corruption," say commentators on MSNBC.
The man divides opinion like no one else in America.
My latest video looks at the "good, bad, and ugly" of Trump. The good is wonderful.
Unemployment is down, and the stock market is up.
Trump deserves credit for that. By criticizing "job-crushing regulations" and appointing some regulators who fear government overreach, Trump signaled people that government would not crush you merely because you make a profit or want to try something new. As a result, 6 million more Americans were hired.
Unemployment fell during Barack Obama's presidency, too, but under Obama, fewer Americans chose to even look for work. People dropped out of the labor force.
Once Trump was elected, more people applied for jobs again.
Why? I say it's because his administration sent a new message. Instead of telling people: "You're victims of an unfair system! You need handouts," Trump said: "You don't need welfare. Most of you can get a job."
Even disability claims, which had been steadily rising, have declined.
Trump did other good things, like appointing judges that tend to rule in favor of free speech and private property.
On the other hand, Trump's done a lot of bad.
To undermine a political opponent and expose the sleaziness of the opponent's son, Trump sleazily withheld aid to an ally. Then he lied about it.
Trump lies about all sorts of things—big and small.
He said his inauguration had "the biggest audience in… history." He kept saying it, even after reports showed it wasn't true.
He broke his promises about ending America's wars.
Unlike his predecessors, he hasn't started new wars—but he's increased bombings. The USA is now dropping more bombs on Afghanistan than at any time in the last 10 years.
Trump broke promises about spending. He promised he'd "cut spending, big-league."
But he did the opposite. Spending has increased by half a trillion dollars since Trump was elected.
Rep. Warren Davidson (R–Ohio) is a Trump supporter, but he's upset that Trump's gone along with a big increase in the national debt. Davidson complained to his fellow Republicans, but suddenly, they didn't seem to care much about the debt now that someone from their party was president.
This week, Trump proposed a budget that would slow the growth of most unsustainable welfare programs. But he knows that won't get through Congress. Probably, he'll sign the gusher of spending that Congress produces instead.
"We are on a path to bankrupting our country," says Davidson.
Trump also says false things about trade. He claimed our $500 billion trade deficit means the U.S. is "losing on trade with China." But that's absurd.
"He's telling people trade isn't win-win; there's a winner and a loser." I complained to Davidson, adding, "I don't think Trump understands trade."
"He has a metaphor that the average American understands," responded Davidson.
"But it's a wrong metaphor, right?" I asked.
"It is technically inaccurate," said Davidson.
Trump is also a bully. That's his ugly part.
He calls people "stupid," "pathetic," "a low-IQ individual." He makes fun of their looks and weight. It's unpresidential.
"Some of his words certainly have been ugly," Davidson agreed.
"He's like a 3-year-old!" I said. "We're supposed to outgrow that narcissism when we're an adult."
"This is all baked into Donald Trump," replied Davidson. "He is true to who everyone knows Donald Trump as, and they love him anyway."
"You love him anyway?" I asked.
"I do," said Davidson. "His policies have been great, and the results are measurably great."
Many are. And Trump is likely to be reelected, according to the odds on my site ElectionBettingOdds.com. So it looks like we'll see much more of him.
I hope we get more of the good and less of the bad and ugly.

The commentators will be all over Stossel for mildly criticizing Trump and failing to praise him rapturously enough.
Is it hilarious watching leftists predict things.
I'm not a leftist, but I bet that JesseSPAZ will lie like a rug!

“He can fire political appointees for any fucking reason he wants.”
(Comment by JesseSPAZ)
Jesse’s over-archingly lusting after the super-powers of the Trumptorship YET AGAIN!!!
Trump can fire them for not assigning their entire paychecks to Trump… For not licking Trump’s balls as much as JesseSPAZ does… For turning down Trump’s requests for then to perform personal murder-for-hire… For having fucked Stormy Daniels out of turn, when it was Trump’s turn…
Just when I was rooting for JesseSPAZ to turn from his evil ways, he doubles down on Trumptatorship-worship AGAIN!
Are you seriously trying to argue that people that serve at the pleasure of the president can’t be fired for whatever reason?
The Trumptatorship, as a Dictatorship (as desired by JesseSPAZ and other Trumpbots), can do WHATEVER they like, if they have enough guns and power and followers! That is the reality of power! "Power" says "might makes right"!
Do you believe that ANY of the below is "right"? (Ethical, moral? Will lead to good results in the long run?)
As Trump rewards war criminals and tries to drum out of service, the likes of Vindman, who obeyed a legal subpoena, and did not lie, these questions become VERY important! NAZIs should have taught us "just following orders" doesn't cut it!
https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-suggests-military-could-take-disciplinary-action-on-vindman-2020-2
Trump suggested that the military might take disciplinary action against Lt. Col. Alex Vindman after he was kicked off the NSC
Personal obedience to the Dictator or else!
"Are you seriously trying to argue that people that serve at the pleasure of the president can’t be fired for whatever reason?"
So...yes?
Yet you were eerily quiet when Obama fired plenty of Bush appointees. Maybe you just didn't know about it because the goddam MSM didn't care. Anyway, take your meds, you're ranting nonsensically.
Idiot! They were Republicans
Trump not wanting a "disloyal" person on His staff is one thing. Now He wants to go further, and charge Vidman with MADE-UP military crimes, to boot him out of the military! That dispenses with what little pretenses we have, of Trump being about "the rule of law, and not of men". Next in line? Get rid of military people swearing oaths to defend the USA Constitution, and swear personal loyalty to Trump, instead! Like the WW II German Armed forces swore personal loyalty to Hitler! That would be the HONEST thing to do, the way things are going!

Nah, they'll just ignore the article. It said good things about Trump and that doesn't fit their "unreason" narrative. So this article may as well not exist.
It's weird how upset it makes you that people point out Reason's hard turn to leftism
So criticizing Trump = "hard turn to leftism", got it
Not what I said, psychoticjeff.

I accuse Reason of being a leftist rag because Reason is a leftist rag.
Criticism of Trump is part of that, but not the whole or cause.
Just look at articles from Soave, Bailey, ENB – they’re not about Trump, they’re about promoting leftist narratives.
SJWism is essentially correct, it just goes too far sometimes, and conservatives are just as bad! Global warming change is real and only opposed by deniers, but we can control the planet with mostly private industry! War on porn!
And let's try some headlines:
"Trump's budget plan is an economic fantasy" (the one that proposes cuts)
"Despite $4.4 trillion in cuts, Trump's budget won't balance until 2035"
Vs
"Buttigieg makes the Democratic case for cutting the debt"
I support Trump, but Stossel makes a number of valid points. Especially about spending.
None of us have ever said Trump is infallible, or never wrong. Progtards only understand blind devotion or scorching condemnation. Being the soulless unthinking creatures they are. They have no grasp of any kind of balanced criticism.

This article is like complaining about the color of the berg that sank the Titanic.
In this analogy, Trump is the iceberg and the Titanic is America? Nah, America is stronger than Trump.
Hear hear
How is trump sinking America?
Trump has been sinking America into a level BELOW the gutter... Below whale dung, for that matter... For a LONG time now! Treating our fellow (non-Tumpbot) humans with ANY hint of respect? Not under the Trumptatorship, you won't! ONLY the Trumptator Himself, and His Trumpbots, deserve respect! ALL of the rest as morons!

I suppose you're going to blame all this rhetoric on Trump for sinking the level below the gutter?
It is the Trump-dick-sucker, ***NOT*** me, who runs around telling people to commit suicide! That's a HUGE difference, and it speaks volumes!
Ever hear of "fighting fire with fire"? Jesus Christ was a VERY loving and humble person, but he said some VERY mean and nasty (but true!) things about evil, hypocritical Pharisees! And other "wolves in sheeps' clothing"!
Or do you agree with Shitsy, that running around, trying to get people to commit suicide... "Channeling" Jimmy Jones and-or the Evil One... Is a GOOD thing? Good libertarians are "sheep" in this sense... Are you a wolf in sheep's clothing? Libertarians for worshipping Jimmy Jones and drinking the Kool-Aid... How's that working for ya?
I was curious about Stossel's claim that disability claims were down. It was written as though the decline went along with the uptick in job applications under Trump, as sort of a nod to the implication that he got people enthusiastic about raising themselves up by their bootstraps.
But the claims rate has been declining since 2011, and the rate at which claims were rejected went up under Trump. It's kind of obvious that if claims are in decline at the same time fewer claims are approved there will be fewer people on disability. These are the kinds of statistics needed to feign success under Trump. In a period where people won't accept data as fact and where anecdotes are used instead of data, there is a bunch of bad information. Thanks for the bad information, John.
His obnoxiousness is trumped :-b by his lack of slaver tendencies. You think any of the Dems are all about the individual? What the heck are you even doing here? Go huff and puff at huffpost or something.
THIS is the way Trump is sinking America in debt!
https://reason.com/2020/01/31/trump-has-fully-embraced-the-idea-that-deficits-dont-matter/
Trump Has Fully Embraced the Idea That Deficits Don't Matter
The president likes things big, so that apparently applies to government budgets too.
https://thehill.com/policy/finance/482617-fed-chief-issues-stark-warning-to-congress-on-deficits
Fed chief issues stark warning to Congress on deficits
BY SYLVAN LANE - 02/11/20 04:08 PM EST
The last year the US carried no public federal debt was 1835/36.
Deficits have been the norm since 1970, with only fiscal years 1998 to 2001 not having a deficit.
And then we come to this:
"This week, Trump proposed a budget that would slow the growth of most unsustainable welfare programs. But he knows that won't get through Congress. Probably, he'll sign the gusher of spending that Congress produces instead."
So Trump is the one who is at fault for the anticipated deficit? Because Congress won't approve his budget? That's convenient.
That was my question. I agree Trump should be fighting for it, but Congress, and in reality the People, are responsible for the debt.
I hoped Stossel would be better than repeating the stupid Ukraine narrative. Otherwise, the article is pretty spot on
That’s a pretty good takeaway for this article.
Imagine John Stossel thinking that running for president immunizes a person from being investigated.
One can make the argument that Joe Biden wasn't peddling influence, but one cannot make the argument that his son and his brothers weren't enriching themselves by convincing foreign governments and corporations that his influence was for sale.
Maybe Joe wouldn't have made a single decision differently had his family not been securing lucrative business deals and government contracts.
If true, all that tells me is he and his family don't even have the honor of thieves.
Stossel is better with the capitalist is good narrative. Politics are not Stossels strong suit. He fell for Lefty socialist bullshit for decades.
Stossel wants to be a Libertarian so bad but he still cannot get past a few hurdles. Who knows though because stossel wont get into discussions that deviate from his narrative that he is now a Libertarian.
As we know, most of unreason staff are not Libertarian. We have anarchists, Lefties, and socialists writing articles here at unreason.

Trump’s biggest problem, by far, is his mouth. He has no clue how to act dignified, much less “presidential.” But smooth rhetoric and a noble bearing can hide a multitude of sins. Trump’s predecessor ordered the assassination of a boy and his friends for no other reason than the boy’s father was an American who had previously been ordered killed without a trial for writing in support of Al Quida. Even if we agree that warranted the death penalty without any trial, it does not make a child guilty for the sins of the father. But this same president is lauded by most and held up as a wonderful leader simply because he was the smoothest talker to occupy the Oval Office since Reagan.
I think it kinda works for him. Yeah, he's a rich bastard, but he's rough around the edges socially, which helps when he's rallying a bunch of blue-collar workers in WV or Michigan who are used to smooth-talking elites who show up for the election and then forget they exist for 4 years... everyone wishes he'd stop tweeting, but a lot of his folks are happy that he isn't another slick snake-oil salesman of a politician
Trump learned that how he talks is what Americans pays him to be.
It also drives Lefties crazy.

Good parody. Give OMMH a run for his pesos.
This is an interesting article. The fact is that most of the "good" is standard Republican policies and these would be pushed by any number of candidates. The problem is that these policies are unlikely to capture public approval by themselves. Instead they are paired with what Mr. Stossel has labeled the "bad" and "ugly". Using Presidents ugly side has allowed Republicans to carry the day and move policies unlikely to pass by themselves. But this is a short term strategy and the question comes up what happen after Trump. He will be gone in 2021 or 2025 at the latest. What happens after that?
^^^ +1
The goodest of the "Good" about Trump is that he kept Hillary out of the White House and he's the only one who could have done it. When you're fighting a pig, you're going to have to be willing to get down in the mud. Trump's a disgustingly loathsome gross pig of a human being, but he's not evil like the disgustingly loathsome gross pig of a human being named Hillary and the skill-set for being a good President is not necessarily the same as the skill-set for being a good human being.
But the bad part of being Trump is his ego and his belief that he's the smartest man in the world and all he needs as an advisor is his very good brain. "Nobody knew healthcare could be so complicated", he said, because obviously if he didn't know it then nobody knew it. That belief that he's God is what gets him into trouble - he believes he can just hand-wave a thy-will-be-done. Look at his recent house-cleaning at the NSC of all the dirty cops and the back-stabbers and the traitors - did you really not know that every single person in the Washington Establishment hates your guts and is going to sabotage and undermine and resist everything you do until they find an opportunity to stab you in the back? Why wasn't there a thorough house-cleaning of every single Obama appointee and sympathizer you could lay your hands on from Day One? Because, like Custer at Bighorn, you couldn't conceive of needing to worry about a handful of dumb savages.
And what the hell are you doing to institutionalize your swamp-draining and preparing the way for your successor? Not a damn thing, because your ego won't allow you to consider that anybody could possibly fill your shoes - it's why you pick such terrible ass-kissers and sycophants over competent assassins that could actually effect some real change in the government.
5 minutes after Trump's gone, it'll be just like he was never there at all and the GOP will revert to the same old Stupid Party it's always been. And then AOC will become President and that will be the end of the American Experiment.
You don't think there'll be "another Trump" to succeed him? We don't know who that'll be, just as we didn't know it'd be Trump in 2016.
I agree about skill sets. And the more fundamental problem in the contrast in skills that can win elections and the skills that can govern effectively. But maybe that is a reflection of the lack of skills among voters.
Sounds like an admission that he's in over his head. His ego will continue to inflict harm, like the whimsical tariffs have. And since when does a president have sole control over foreign policy? This boob combines the worst of 1930's isolationism with neocon hubris. There is no good. The claim that jobs are up is unsupported, much less than that Trump deserves any credit for anything that is not bad. Ch as nticleer didn't cause the sun to rise, and Trump has done mire to hurt the economy than to help it. As for judges, yeah, right. Leonard Leo picked them and well live to regret it when they eviscerate rights other than to disobey nondiscrimination laws. More Americans are $400 away from disaster than since the Great Depression. He also is actively facilitating the rebirth of the Russian empire. Worst and ugliest is his prioritization of vengeance for any perceived slight. Charles Fried and George Will are hardly "liberals," and they agree: low character and repellent personality. Is "owning the libs" worth the price of amorality, dishonor, and absolute selfishness?
Yeah. Everything is so terrible and unfair.
Haha
You gotta love leftist tears
"Nobody knew healthcare could be so complicated”, he said, because obviously if he didn’t know it then nobody knew it."
Or he could have been being sarcastic?
"did you really not know that every single person in the Washington Establishment hates your guts and is going to sabotage and undermine and resist everything you do until they find an opportunity to stab you in the back? Why wasn’t there a thorough house-cleaning of every single Obama appointee and sympathizer you could lay your hands on from Day One?"
Yeah, that would have been an impeachment right there, and in the climate of 2016/17, before Lindsey Graham went "Grahambo" on the Kavanaugh hearings, Trump didn't have the support of the Republican party to protect him. I mean, are we forgetting how unpopular he was in his own party in the beginning? Are we forgetting the "never Trumpers" like McCain and the influence they had? The attempted character assassination of Kavanaugh was a turning point for a lot of Republican congressmen. Especially when Dem-friendly decades-long fence-sitter Graham ripped a strip off the Democrats.
"Because, like Custer at Bighorn, you couldn’t conceive of needing to worry about a handful of dumb savages."
Yes, that's exactly what it was. It wasn't the understanding that if he did something that even gave an appearance of being self serving (like firing Comey) even Republicans in congress wouldn't back him up. It wasn't knowing that without a track record, he'd made enemies in the primaries who'd gladly join forces with establishment Democrats to take him down. I mean, let's all refresh our memories here. There were calls for his impeachment in the media before he was even elected, and renewed calls published within minutes of his being sworn in. The coverage of him since his campaign began was something like 94% negative, and that hasn't changed. Bill Maher was predicting he'd pull a Hitler and appoint himself Supreme Dictator for Life since day one.
He was elected by the people of the United States, not by the people who hold the sole power of impeachment and the sole power of trying impeachments. Most of the members of his own f***ing party had no reason to love him, and expressed no love for him, when he was elected. Ben Carson was one of the few who were like, "I don't think he's a bad guy...."
Yet here you are, saying, "he should have gone on a firing binge the moment he took office! He's super stupid for not doing that!"
Had he done that, he'd have been impeached in his first year, not his third. He knew it. I knew it. The guy couldn't even fire Comey without everyone losing their fricking minds. But here you are saying, "he was an idiot to keep these a**holes around him!"
We all know it's super easy to drain the swamp when most of the swamp dwellers can f*** you over the moment you cross them.
Good points.
You're right. But now Trump has built a pretty damn good record, and it would be tough for the uniparty Rs to openly betray him.
Let the culling commence!
Yeah, he still has to be careful, though. Getting rid of the Vindmans and Sondland was testing the waters on safe targets.
Vindman clearly doesn't agree with Trump on foreign policy, and doesn't have his back. Remember, he reported the call to his superior as disturbing and problematic and yada yada. Trump gets to set foreign policy. Turns out, Vindman's objection to the call was arguably based on a policy disagreement. You're going to "report" to your superior based on that? Dude, it's not your place. POTUS sets foreign policy. YOU just implement it. If you can't do that, you shouldn't be in that job.
As for Sondland, if one looks carefully at everyone's testimony, he was going around to a bunch of diplomats and high level officials for weeks telling them Trump required a quid pro quo, a "fact" that was based on nothing "other than my own presumption." Not only was it just his presumption, it was unbelievably presumptuOUS given that he was poking his fingers into other people's pies. He was ambassador to the EU, not Ukraine. Why the f*** was he messing around with diplomacy and foreign policy for a country not in his bailiwick? And making a complete hash of it by assuming things and not verifying them before presenting them as fact.
All Trump has to say is, "this guy was overstepping his bounds... Ukraine wasn't any of his business... and there he was telling everyone whose business it WAS that I wanted something from them that I never told him or anyone else that I wanted... He's gonna speak for me without even speaking TO me? Very bad. How can you trust a guy like that?"
Super easy to justify these dismissals without the mainstream screaming, "HE'S JUST PROMOTING A DEBUNKED CONSPIRACY THEORY!!!"
A mass culling of people just because they served under Obama? That's going to be harder to justify. But I can see him plucking the worst of the bad feathers one by one over the next few months.
Apparently bill maher thinks trump will appoint himself fascist dictator for life.
It’s hard not to root against such a retarded victim mindset.
I seriously wonder if Trump will willingly step down if defeated in Nov. Not that it’s going to happen. The Democrats don’t have anyone that can beat him at this point.
Which is good. The real goal should be to get rid of the democrat party forever. It’s nothing be communist treason anymore.
+10000
That the impeachment brought to public attention Hunter Biden's sleazy sinecure job with Burisma far more effectively than anything Trump could have accomplished by leaning on the Ukrainian government is hilarious. Trump either is extremely fortunate in his enemies' capacity to shoot themselves in the foot or he really is playing multidimensional chess.
I'd say this is pretty spot on, as usual, from Stossel.
I would stress trade more. Not just that he doesn't understand it, but he is actively expanding Presidential powers in order to get his way on trade. If he has a compelling argument for tariffs as a bargaining tool, and maybe he does, he should go to Congress and convince them of this. Using "national security" to expand the President's powers is a real threat. The Democrats will seize on this to implement climate change legislation, gun control, who knows what else at the first chance they get.
Sorry, not legislation but climate change initiatives by Executive Order.
I don't disagree with you with regards to it'll be a bad thing in the long run, but do you honestly think Congress could be convinced? The democrats won't allow anything that could make Trump look good, and half the Republicans would vote against it if they aren't getting some sort of kickback.
That's the point. If you can't convince a majority of Congress to back your plan then you shouldn't be able to implement it.
Congress can take away the executive power at any time. They havent. Its perfectly constitutional power of the executive to negotiate treaties.
Stossel is wrong and the fact that you support this claim is ample evidence that stossel is wrong. You've been out argued on this topic time and time again.
This is atypical of stossel and I see why. Stossel is the capitalism guy. Stossel still has not bought into the Libertarian thing. It shows.
I have first hand knowledge of stossel and his falling for Lefty bullshit. Like all ex-Lefties stossel is still a convert not an original Independent. Remember, stossel used to Propagandize for the Left and he was good at it. He made it to the pinnacle- 60 minutes.

Robert Ringer (Can you get any more libertarian?) says there's a winner and a loser in every trade.
Who?
He’s speaking in third person.
To undermine a political opponent and expose the sleaziness of the opponent's son, Trump sleazily withheld aid to an ally. Then he lied about it.
First he didn't lie there has been no proof of that. second there is nothing illegal about exposing criminal acts of a political opponent. if exposing was criminal in itself then the whole impeachment process would be illegal and everything the FBI did to spy on Trump and everything the DNC did to get the fake steel dosier would be illegal.
>>The man divides opinion like no one else in America.
the Seth Meyerses in this conversation are opinion pimps.
Google pay 350$ reliably my last pay check was $45000 working 9 hours out of consistently on the web. My increasingly youthful kinfolk mate has been averaging 19k all through continuous months and he works around 24 hours reliably… Read more
The Good
- Often good rhetoric
- Tax-rate cuts
- Reduced support for enemy nations’ governments
- Fighting Chinese government’s systemic theft of intellectual property
The Bad
- Mostly awesomely-bad initial hires
- Still in every existing war
- No vetoes, even of spending bills and of Obamacare-rebranding bills
- Nonexecution of constitutional statutes when challenged by unconstitutional opinions
- No positions eliminated
- Jailbreak bill signed
- Parental leave signed and expansion proposed
- Every bad incumbent has been supported, and the strongest bad candidate for every open office has been supported
The Ugly
- Overwhelmingly talk against abortion in place of action against abortion
- Attacks on conservatives
- Name-calling
- False and misleading descriptions of accomplishments
If a couple of the biggest bad things Stossel can point to are Trump's exposure of Democrat corruption and exaggerating the size of his inauguration audience, I think I'll take it.
"the results are measurably great." -- but how do we measure the result of normalizing blatant lying? It's hard to imagine there isn't a large cost (e.g. in leading to bad decisions based on false information), but what's a "measure" of that?
Ahahahahahahahaha
Behold! THE most meaningful Nadless-Nardless snippet of writing in MANY months now!
Nobody reads your posts
You obviously read it!
I did read this one, because it was only 4 words.
But the one before, no.
I skipped over the gibberish and just hit reply, then automatically flagged it so it'll be collapsed when I return to the thread.
You have nothing of value to say, and just spam constantly because you're a narcissistic douche

Senate poised to pass bill curbing Trump's war powers with Iran after Soleimani strike, but a veto is likely
One-way ratchet? Congress signs over powers that belong to Congress... Tries to RECLAIM said powers... Is VETOED by the POTUS! Congress declares a Trumptatorship? Then the Trumptatorship will have to CONSENT to the DEMISE of the Trumptatorship?!?! WTF, where have "limited powers" gone to? Is an Evil Empire under the Trumptatorship now a total slam dunk?
Seems about right to me.
4 year old vs Commie.
Funny how that “4 year old” out maneuvers Lefties on a daily basis.
Whatever they need to call Trump to hide their tears,
"Trump also says false things about trade. He claimed our $500 billion trade deficit means the U.S. is "losing on trade with China." But that's absurd.
"He's telling people trade isn't win-win; there's a winner and a loser." I complained to Davidson, adding, "I don't think Trump understands trade."
Hey John,
Your argument for the boundless benefits to Americans of enriching Slaver Xi with tariff free access to the US market fell off.
