5 Myths That Anti-Porn Crusaders Keep Repeating
The porn wars are raging once again!

The porn wars are raging once again, with would-be censors on the right and left trotting out the same tired excuses for suspending the First Amendment—and the same absurd explanations, made even sillier in the digital era, for how a federal porn ban would work.
This round started because four Republican legislators wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr last week asking for the Department of Justice to make obscenity prosecutions a priority once more.
Let's take a look at some claims from today's porn prohibitionists…
1. Claim: The rise of online pornography and digital marketplaces for sex work has coincided with a rise in violence against women.
In fact, the last several decades have seen decreases in all sorts of violent crime rates, including rates of rape and sexual assault. "Victimization rates for rape in the United States demonstrate an inverse relationship between pornography consumption and rape rates," noted researchers Christopher J. Ferguson and Richard D. Hartley in a 2009 article for the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior reviewing studies on the effects of pornography. And "data from other nations have suggested similar relationships." Overall, "the increasing availability of pornography appears to be associated with a decline in rape."
People who commit rape appear to consume less porn than the general population. In the U.S., rape rates declined faster in states with early internet access. And research has suggested that online "erotic services" marketplaces like Craigslist are directly linked to a decline in female homicide rates. Studies "have also reported positive associations between pornography use and egalitarian attitudes," according to 2015 research from the University of Western Ontario.
2. Claim: Teens who watch porn are more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviors.
In fact, the proliferation of online porn and minors' easy access to it has coincided with a significant drops in just about every negative outcome connected to young people and sex. Teenagers have been waiting longer before losing their virginity. When they do have sex, they are using condoms and contraception more often. And they are having fewer unintended pregnancies.
In addition, studies dating back more than half a century show that growing up in an atmosphere of sexual repression and shame is more likely to predict anti-social sexual attitudes and actions than is exposure to pornography.
"Exposure to pornography during adolescence had little effect on persons who later became rapists and child molesters," reported the Associated Press in 1970, describing a federal commission's conclusions on the subject. The news agency explained that "sexual deviates generally came from homes where pornography was restricted and sex was never discussed" and that "most deviates had been severely punished as teenagers by their parents when caught with pornographic material."
3. Claim: Online porn is uniquely addictive.
In fact, there's nothing uniquely dangerous about digital porn that's getting people "hooked." People who have an "addiction" to watching online porn appear to suffer from the same lack of self-regulation and other underlying cognitive and psychological issues that affect people with other compulsions or problem attachments.
We shouldn't dismiss or mock those who struggle with compulsive porn consumption any more than we should those trapped in other self-destructive behaviors, but we also shouldn't structure society around catering to such pathologies. That's only asking for the same old problems plus a host of new ones.
4. Claim: Porn desensitizes men to regular sex.
In fact, we don't have much research on this—what we do have suggests the opposite. When the UCLA neuroscientist Nicole Prause studied the subject, she found no relationship between porn consumption and erectile dysfunction. And contrary to popular claims, Prause found that watching porn did not make men "unable to respond sexually to 'normal' sexual situations with a partner."
Prause's study, published in 2015 in the journal Sexual Medicine, concluded that the "oft-repeated link" between porn and poor penis functioning is "perpetuated by data-poor literature."
5. Claim: Legal porn increases human trafficking.
In fact, previous bouts of prohibition have shown us that making something illegal doesn't actually stop that thing from existing—but it does make engaging with the banned thing more dangerous for all involved. Porn production and distribution would still happen in an America where online porn was banned. But organized crime would have much more control over it, performers would not have the standard legal protections against violence and exploitation, and it would be harder to prevent the production of porn involving minors or others who cannot or did not consent.
As in all sexual matters, the line between legal and illegal pornography should turn on the willing participation of those involved, not the tastes of whoever shouts the loudest.
The internet has fueled a resurgence in a once-dormant porn panic. But the internet hasn't just enabled more porn access; it has allowed a much more diverse porn landscape, one that features more diverse body types and sexualities and where independent adult entertainers and content creators have more control over their income, image, and work conditions than ever before. There's still much room for improvement, but declaring a new war on obscenity would only set that work back.

4 congressmen write a pointless letter to the attorney general about enforcing already-existing laws and Reason finds the time to hold a podcast and write 2 think pieces on the subject. Saudi terrorists murder Americans and.... *crickets*
Hey cytotoxic, tell me again how Reason simply lacks the resources and manpower to cover frivolous news like terrorist attacks.
Frivolity? Going after porn is an attack on where the Reason staff lives.
The crazy thing is that all the credible threats to porn come from the woke nowadays. But Reason's pretending that it's 1985, and some congressmen's letter is srius bizness.
Who is this "cytotoxic" person?
A former commentator here. Don't know where s/he split.
A former CANADIAN commentator!
It's amazing how people just....disappear.
Like Agile Cyborg.
He is currently known as ‘Chemjeff’.
I’m guessing that much of the Reason staff are porn addicts, so an attack on porn for them is a terrorist attack.
Well, uh how many times a day constitutes addiction. Asking for a friend.
Serious answer: as a rule of thumb, "addiction" isn't measured by frequency of use, but in how it affects you.
If you go without your "addiction", are you more irritable? Prone to mood swings? Generally "bitchy"?
Does it affect your sleep? Do you find to sleep without indulging your addicting? Does indulging your addiction prevent you from getting enough sleep?
Does it affect your social life? Does your addiction prevent you from enjoying a full social life, either because of it's side-effects or time demands? Are you missing important family functions because you are indulging your addiction?
Does it affect your work life? Does your addiction make you late for work? Impact your performance? Miss time?
So it's not a "how often", it's a "how much impact". That said, "high functioning" addicts can (and do) disguise the symptoms of their addiction, so it's not perfect.
But that's the rule of thumb.
Everyone here is a sock or shill.
Interestingly, it's spelt dwyane
That's Ghetto Mom's spelling.
Nice try at snark but the truth is far more mundane. Hospital staff accidentally misspelled "Dwayne" on the birth certificate and mom never bothered getting it changed. Similar thing happened when hospital staff gave my daughter my wife's surname instead of mine. No big deal.
No one cares.
I didnt know that, I thought it was supposed to be pronounced with a twang, lol.
Dwanye

John Ashcroft had planned a major drive against pornography with an enormous series of raids and arrests scheduled to begin on October 1, 2001. The vast majority of the justice department resources and FBI agents were devoted to this effort. So much resources were devoted to the planned drive against pornography, that a warrant was not obtained to examine the computer of the "20th hijacker" who had been arrested in August 2001 and it was later learned that his computer had various details about the planned 9-11 attack. Ashcroft was apparently upset and surprised when Bush ordered the planned drive against pornography cancelled after 9-11, citing among the other obvious reasons, the fact that the Taliban was even more zealously against pornography than Ashcroft.
Utilitarian arguments in support of fundamental rights are nice, but sort of beside the point.
No, they're not, because what you think is the point is nearly impossible to convince anybody of. People just have different ideas about how much priority to give to individual liberty in formulating public policy. That being the case, how do you get more liberty? By convincing people, without directly changing their opinion on how much priority to give liberty generally, that particular policies are better or worse for other reasons.
Once you achieve a lot of liberty, people then change their opinions on how much priority to give liberty because they see it as a normal thing, and a thing that generally produces results they want for other reasons.
Try to convince people directly, and you soon find yourself at loggerheads. At worst, you turn them off to other arguments in favor of better policies because they react with, "The people who are saying that are saying it just because they're radical libertarians. That alone is reason to be skeptical of those policies."
Observe looter parasites. They sidle up to racial collectivists with Right On, and to mystical bigots with Oughtta be a Law... Screeching abt the boojwah pigs and oppressed 2 lazy 2 work only signals "punch me, I'm into initiation of force." Fabian libertarian subtleties are excellent vote-getters, and if Fabian looters are any indication, we only need 2% of the vote, campaign after campaign, to gradually rewrite the laws and amend the Constitution. See Friedman on the Socialist Party platform of 1928.
Thank you, Dr. Bronner.
"No, they’re not"
Yes actually, they are Hihn.
Now fuck off.
That anyone can seriously still think that prohibition works is really just mind-boggling.
I read the letter and what's mind-boggling is that they want to attempt to solve a problem by not using prohibition, but a tactic that doesn't even fix the issue they say they're advocating against. Prohibition would be more effective than what they're trying.
Obscenity prosecutions don't stop people from making porn. It just means they select people and pursue them with charges. Two naked women kissing could be obscene if shown to the right jury. They could essentially nab anyone.
Meanwhile, people continue to produce content just like they did under Bush.
And what would reason write about Saudi terrorists? That we shouldn't trust them? I'm not sure what they could add to the issue of foreign born terrorists and radicals.
This, as a First Amendment issue, is their bailiwick.
Yea, super important that 1% of congressmen wrote a letter!
“And what would reason write about Saudi terrorists?”
That they don’t generally make very good porn?
Claim: Teenagers have been waiting longer before losing their virginity.
True! Our precious teenagers during their most fertile years are not working hard enough to replenish the population, thus ensuring that all of us will be in nursing homes run by cold, uncaring robots.
I'm planning on paying more so that my robot will be at a comfortable 98.6 degrees when its wiping my ass.
Nothing worse than cold metal on your nether regions.
Hot metal.
Molten metal?
I blame helicopter parents.
Or they claim they waited when nosy people with clipboards ask them.
Mexican robots.
Spotcheck Billy got down on his hands and knees

She said "No, no honey, not tonight
Comeback Monday, comeback Tuesday, then I might."
I said Juanita, my sweet Jaunita, what are you up to?
My Juanita
I said Jaunita, my sweet taquita, what are you up to?
My Juanita
Don't want nobody who won't dive for dimes
Don't want no speedballs 'cause I might die tryin
Throw me a line, throw me a line
'Cause there's a fat man in the bathtub with the blues
I hear you moan, I hear you moan, I hear you moan“
Little feat
Who needs robots? My long term insurance plan is to put enough away to hire some sweet thing to bring me illicit fast food, whiskey, and ease my tired bones in my old age.
The population will be replenished, but I suggest learning Spanish now so you'll be able to communicate with the aides in the nursing home.
Vern
I think I could do that. Adding that to the Echo retirement plan. Learn some simple basic Spanish.
Communication even if you speak little is not that difficult.
It has happened through all human history.
Forget Spanish. Brush up your Náhuatl, Zapoteca, Mixteca, Garífuna, Xinca, and Q’eqchi'. Spanish speakers want too much money to work in old folks' facilities.
Claim: Porn desensitizes men to regular sex.
Whoever made this claim has never met a man.
Possibly, or certainly never had sex
There may be something to it. It is called "Porn Brain" and the basic theory seems to be that consuming pornography makes real sex seem too timid and unexciting by comparison.
On the other hand, most men's sexual options are rather limited, so I don't think it has much to do with the porn, and much more with the fact that millions men are not as sexually attracted to their long term partners as they once were.
There's no cure for wanting to have sex with younger, more physically attractive women. Porn is an easy scapegoat.
I suppose that happens, but it seems strange to me. Seems to me that any intimate contact with an actual woman is a whole lot more exciting to me than watching strangers fuck on a screen.
But most women won't do the shit they do in porn. I think that's the point of its success and attraction?
Like a girl taking two or three cocks in the ass. Stuff like that.
Think your woman loves you? Guess again. One way to tell if your woman loves you. If she'll have your dog.
There may be something to it. It is called “Porn Brain” and the basic theory seems to be that consuming pornography makes real sex seem too timid and unexciting by comparison.
Translation--
Consuming pornography shows people that there's far better than missionary out there and makes them want more from their sex lives.
Actually, there is some merit to this. younger this was not a problem but as i got older i noticed this was a problem with my partner. i stopped using porn for that reason.
I can imagine people with some behavior issues, addictive tendencies, or perhaps some forms of depression becoming obsessed with online porn.
As to teens - I will admit that it's hard for me to imagine how I would have reacted to sites like Pornhub or YouPorn when I was 12 - since back then I stuck with Playboy and Penthouse.
I'm 60 now and am glad I'm addicted to wine rather than porn. Cheers.
"I’m addicted to wine rather than porn"
Are you aware that you can mix the two? This is one of the few times where it is safe to combine.
A glass of chardonnay and a wank with a previously used Tenga?
Sounds sophisticated.
...but...but...but...what about all those porn-again Christians?
Yeah, those Christians are full of political capital and are winning battles on social issues regularly. Really? Do you also believe the Handmaid's Tale is likely to happen?
They're an acceptable target for hate and the left loves to hate.
If I was not permitted to masturbate to porn on the internet, I'd have to have sex with my wife.
Don't let the government force you to fuck your wife.
Support freedom.
Well, this explain why you are so angry all the time.
If you had to have sex with my wife, you'd be angry too.
Depends on how much you are paying.
The sad thing is that you are too insecure to leave her for someone else.
Since ENB brought up the subject, has any of you playboys/girls checked out 19 year-old Autumn Falls? OMG
"Button Mashing."
You're welcome.
I have not.
*checks it out*
eeeewwwww
Gross.
I just looked at her Instagram page. I'm not a fan of such large (and I assume fake) boobs, but would have to see her in action in a porn film before deciding if she's worth an "eeeewwww".
I don't think they are fake. I'm not big on enormous tits, but if they are real it can be interesting.
I watched one of her "films" - it was okay. Nice butt. I don't watch porn often and don't know who the current porn "stars" are - but I don't think Autumn deserves any special attention.
Really laughing at bringing research from 1970 into this. There was literally no one, including actual pornigraphers, who had access and exposure to porn in the 60s the way teenage boys do today.
(This is not a "ban it" post)
Agreed porn has gone too far, and that banning it isnt a solution.
Parental control apps work just fine.
Any politicians reading? Want to ban porn online? Well, tough. Want to make it harder for people to see? Let me help you:
1.) Amend CDA 230 to make those hosting illegal adult content liable for such content.
2.) Remove the part of Section 18 2257 about secondary producers not having to verify identities of performers and have them on file. This is common sense. Otherwise, kids can just upload and people can profit off of that. Stops piracy and revenge porn as well. (Wammen can reclaim their bodies)
3.) Site owned by company overseas? Check to see if they own any companies in the US. The free porn sites do. Also, check to see where the servers hosting such material are located. Build a case and then nab them when they show up on US soil.
4.) Use the FTC's COPPA to go after them for tracking along with their cartoon content/deepfakes of celebs. The free sites cost a fortune to run and without advertising and selling data they'll go belly up.
5.) If they're hosting illegal content then make it known so those processing the payments stop offering their services. If you inform them they can't say they didn't know.
You could be the politician that stomped out porn as well as helped performers. (Girl power and such) We have a completely legal form of pandering and these websites have made the legit form no longer profitable.
If it's pleasurable, be certain that someone wants to ban it. Just because it shows who is in charge.
Hey look - "four Republican legislators wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr" and demanded that they be Gods and place judgement on OTHER peoples PERSONAL life's and practices even though they cannot say how it affects their individual rights or anyone else's.
Wasn't it the devils plan to FORCE people to be moral??? These types of Republicans make me sick! GET YOUR NOSES OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES PERSONAL LIVES!!!!
Oh goodie, 'Reason' is standing erect for porn. Keep your mind on the road and your hands on the wheel, and for god's sake, use the handiwipes.

You were doing okay up to this point (not great) and then your entire piece crumbled into dust and rubble. There are at least three different lawsuits pending against this one -- and for good reason. Search her name in the context of harassment, defamation, and porn, and see what you get.
Also, it's not really true that "we don't have much research." Here are a few examples (there are many others I could list):

So, do you want to make porn illegal or do you believe in individual liberty and freedom of speech? Your opinion counts less than members of congress by the way.
No. I've fought long and tirelessly for total decriminalization -- of all industry, not just sex -- long before the advent of social media, at which time it became trendy to advocate "decrim" for sex work (but little to nothing else).
My comment has nothing to do with legalities but concerns only the issue of escalation -- and specifically the absurd and entirely misbegotten statement that "we don't have much research on this" -- and then goes on to cite (of all people) Nicole Prause, who, as anyone knows who's ever had any direct dealing with Prause, discredits anything she's near.
ARTICLE ASSERTION: “Victimization rates for rape in the United States demonstrate an inverse relationship between pornography consumption and rape rates,"
Let’s look at this more closely.
1) Studies reveal that rape rates are often under-reported – and may in fact be on the rise. See this peer-reviewed paper – “How to Lie with Rape Statistics: America’s Hidden Rape Crisis”. Conclusion:
“Correcting the data to remove police undercounting by imputing data from highly correlated murder rates, the study conservatively estimates that 796,213 to 1,145,309 complaints of forcible vaginal rapes of female victims nationwide disappeared from the official records from 1995 to 2012. Further, the corrected data reveal that the study period includes fifteen to eighteen of the highest rates of rape since tracking of the data began in 1930. Instead of experiencing the widely reported “great decline” in rape, America is in the midst of a hidden rape crisis.
2) Ferguson cherry-picked a few countries. Many countries have seen an increase in rape rates during this same time period: such as Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Portugal, etc.
3) All violent crimes have declined, but rape rates have declined less than the other crimes.
4) The decline of violent crimes coincides with aging population - which means that the percentage of men in the age-group most likely rape make up a much smaller % of the total population. Aging populations alone could account for the decline in violent crime rates.
5) As a result, we must look at data on actual porn users, rather the aggregate/country-wide rates of rape. For example, this 2015 meta-analysis - “A Meta‐Analysis of Pornography Consumption and Actual Acts of Sexual Aggression in General Population Studies”. Excerpt:
“22 studies from 7 different countries were analyzed. Consumption was associated with sexual aggression in the United States and internationally, among males and females, and in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Associations were stronger for verbal than physical sexual aggression, although both were significant. The general pattern of results suggested that violent content may be an exacerbating factor.”
Fuck off.

I’ve never heard of anyone who actually preferred playing with themselves while viewing porn to sex with a real partner. Not saying that it’s impossible, but it’s as likely as finding someone who would prefer to eat protein powder, multivitamins, and a fiber supplement to eating an actual meal.
I don't think most would view it as a substitute. However, reality or convenience doesn't always present us with the opportunities porn can provide. Let's say you're a married man with 3 kids, a mortgage, and 10 years into your marriage you come to terms with yourself and accept that you've been living a lie. Having intimate relations with leather-clad men could destroy your marriage and ruin you financially so porn can fill the void in your life.
What if you're married to a progressive white feminist woman and low-class black women are your thing? You've felt ashamed of this fantasy since you were younger and as a result decided to never act upon it. Nothing wrong with a fantasy based on unconscious racism as long as it remains a fantasy, but your wife may not be down with you scouring the urban club scene and you know that you can't ask her to wear blackface and speak like a ratchet hood rat. There's always porn.
You post with a rather enlightening specificity. Just saying.
He thinks desiring sexual partners of other races is subconsciously racist. Hardly enlightened.
I mean, it can be, just depends on the how/why.
Liking women of all races? Almost certainly not racist.
Liking women of a specific race, but being unwilling to date women of that race? Probably racist.
Liking women of a specific race, marrying a woman of a different race, and then needing her to adopt a racist stereotype in order to get your rocks off? Obviously racist.
I would never patronize a black prostitute.
I treat them as equals.
I guess refusing to date women of a specific race even though you like them is a little racist.
As for the rest, then why not throw in "classist" in there too?
We all have certain stereotypes in mind of types we find sexually appealing. If those types happen to have a racial component to them, then I don't really see it as demeaning to that race. Chances are that same guy also prefers white trash women to the better-off, highly educated ones.
If you consciously seek out those of another race that you consider to be low-class for your sexual gratification then your fetish is most-likely predicated on racism.
It's the defense of people like you that has lead to the decades of racially-fueled interracial pornos. Blacks like those movies too so I guess only one race is being the racist one, but whatever. Just masturbate and have fun.
That's because my fantasy consists of having leather-clad men rail me from behind while a ratchet hood rat stands to the side and makes sassy comments while she smacks a crying white progressive woman in blackface.
Howdy! A few years back I was drinking Soylent for about half my meals. Why? Because the alternatives were either (A) pack a lunch or (B) go out to buy food for lunch, and it was a quicker then (A) and cheaper then (B).
I still had home-cooked meals for dinner, but a significant portion of my diet was the "cheap and easy" option.
Porn is kind of the same way. All else being equal, most people would prefer sex to porn. But all else is seldom equal.
I would certainly prefer to have daily access to Margot Robbie and Emily Ratajkowski versus most women available to me, but we all have to settle at some point.
I've met one person who claimed to prefer self pleasure. I don't know how long that lasted.
I dated a guy who would rather watch porn than have sex... even when I was naked in his bed.
He was depressed at the time and not that interested in me, but it wasn't looks that were the problem. I'm not going to oversell myself, but I was skinny, fit, and my face was within the limits of normal if not drop dead gorgeous.
The relationship didn't last long.
The puritans right and left can dream, but it's just not gonna happen. One reason for that is that popular opinion towards pornography was the most accepting it's ever been as of 2018, more so than in 2017, more so than in 2016. So that ship is sailing further and further from the restrictionists on this one.

I keep trying to flip the photo over.
Ban porn, it takes work away from hard-working strippers and prostitutes!
Why not use the services of all three? In one day.
You start out by heading to the strip club in the morning to get you all worked up (bonus, it's cheaper then, including meals). Then you go home and jerk off to porn to release the strip club tension, and to heighten your endurance for what comes next. And what comes next is you head for some hooker from Craigslist.
And there you have it, three in a day. A day off work.
I know what it sounds like ("Spoken like a true libertarian"). But it's not because I'm a libertarian, but because I'm a dude who has extra money left at the end of each month. Because I don't have kids or nothing; there's just low-maintenance me.
The cure is to have kids, so I have less money left. Maybe I should do that.

These series of tweets expose the Reason article as factually inaccurate and extraordinarily biased:

Totally shoddy article by Reason. What a shocker.
Very shoddy. I hope it's beneath them.
So what, if anything, are they planning to do with fake dicks and vibrators?
Sounds like another “down with the patriarchy” dumb ass type of bills. You want to talk about desensitizing.....
I mean, Ted Cruz did defend Texas's sex-toy ban...
Porn banned? I'm OK with it. There's no question it's harmful.
At the very least though, it should be "zoned" online and age verified. Just like you can't open up a porn shop across from the elementary school and invite minors in. Same thing, but online.
For every person that sits around tugging it all day there are those that don't. Just like for every person that sits around drinking all day there are those that don't. There is no need to ban it.
You're right about the zoning aspect. If a porn shop or strip club can get in deep shit if they let minors browse the shelves or sit at the bar then websites should get in deep shit if they allow kids to view it. Just require it to be put behind a paywall. If a site wants to allow users to post nudes then require them to post the proper Section 18 2257 info along with it. The second you require all 2257 info to be maintained by the site owners then the free sites go under.
If people still want to compulsively masturbate to pornography then the tax dollars will roll in.
Agree totally.
In order to get to the zoning aspect, we are gonna need to troll for the more attention-grabbing guys talking about "banning" it. 🙂
Porn will never be banned. What would government employees do during working hours if it was banned?
1. Claim: The rise of online pornography and digital marketplaces for sex work has coincided with a rise in violence against women.
1a. Fact: The rates of reported rapes rises in direct synchronization with the sale of ice cream. I guess we gotta ban ice cream. Because there is simply no way both are related to warmer weather.
When I was a kid, you had to take the subway to Times Square and put tokens in a slot to see either live performers or video porn.
Here is it 30 years later and there is unlimited free porn on the computer.
We are living in the Golden Age of human progress!
We are. But that's unrelated to porn.
"We shouldn't dismiss or mock those who struggle with compulsive porn consumption any more than we should those trapped in other self-destructive behaviors"
Well, since I mock, and have -0- respect for, all human failures, I guess I'll ignore this preaching.
we should not offend somebody's feelings
study table
As a porn addict - I started with my dad's collection of magazines when I was about ten - I can tell you this is an epidemic no one is talking about. I'm nearly 50 now and I'm still hooked. We have "parental controls" and I defeat them easily. There's always a work around. In the world of sex addiction, online pornography is the crack cocaine. Thanks to the internet, and smartphones, it's everywhere and largely free. The girls are beautiful, and whether I want it erotic or nasty, it's always available.
It is a serious problem.
I don't know what the solution is. I don't think it's laws. We don't need anything that makes it even more shameful. Or worse, anything that extends the net of the sex offender registry (something I believe is literally fucked up). But something needs to change, because there are serious negative consequences including, but not limited to, addiction, depression, abuse, and suicide.
