Two New York City police officers have been suspended without pay after one of them was accused of pointing a gun at a woman while off duty in a karaoke bar. Hyun Kim allegedly pointed his gun at the woman's head and told her he'd shoot her if she didn't hang out with them. He has been charged with two counts of menacing. His sergeant, Jun Kim, who was drinking with him, was also suspended.

Also, that's rule 2. Rule 1 is all guns are loaded and to be treated as such. Rule 3 is keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire. Rule 4 is know your target and what's behind it.

When I took my kids to the range when they were young I gave them a rule 5. No. 5 is "listen to your dad and do what he says immediately." Likely a combination of Army and NRA training made that rule, and they still repeat it this day - 20 years later. We always had a lot of fun and both my kids still love shooting.

"Always point your firearm in a safe direction" is the first safety rule for the NRA, which has a better set of rules for beginning shooters. "Never point a gun at anything your not going to shoot" is a weaker version, since negative statements aren't as strong as positive ones, and double negatives are even weaker.

"All guns are loaded" comes from those who follow Jeff Cooper's training. It works okay for more experienced shooters, but places undue emphasis on the gun being loaded. Beginning shooters don't know how to treat a gun "as if it's loaded."

Under the NRA rules whether the gun is loaded, unloaded; on safe or off; open, or closed is irrelevant. Point it in a safe direction because it's a gun.

Menacing seems like the entirely wrong area of law, based on the description. It sounds like he was trying to show off and be funny with his gun, failing miserably and putting people in danger while doing so.

I'd go with reckless endangerment and probably a couple of misuse of firearms type charges. Definitely revoke his carry permit.
