Trump Won't Visit Denmark If the Country Won't Sell Us Greenland
Plus: The recession that's not coming will be "moderate and short," Kamala Harris has seen a big poll drop since June, Facebook yanks "Women for Trump" ad, and more...

President Donald Trump doesn't seem to understand why Denmark won't just sell him Greenland. Come on, he even promised not to build a big, gold Trump Tower on some remote village shore there!
After making an initial offer on the Danish territory last week—one leaders in Denmark promptly rejected—Trump hasn't let go of his absolutely insane crusade to start buying up another country's land. "Strategically it's interesting and we'd be interested but we'll talk to them a little bit," the president told reporters Sunday.
On Monday, he tweeted this:
I promise not to do this to Greenland! pic.twitter.com/03DdyVU6HA
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 20, 2019
Meanwhile, Eric Trump shared the same photo with quite a different sentiment:
Trump was supposed to visit Denmark in September, with other world leaders, but announced yesterday via Twitter that he was calling off the trip.
"Trump's announcement suggests that, despite his denials, the central purpose of his trip had been discussion of a U.S. purchase of the massive, glaciered island, which holds increasing value as melting sea ice opens new parts of the Arctic to shipping and resource extraction," states The Washington Post.
The prime minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, has called Trump's offer "absurd" and said "I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously."
Greenland's Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger said "we are open for business, but we're not for sale."
On Tuesday night, Trump tweeted that because Frederiksen said "she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time."
I wonder if other national leaders will preemptively announce that none of their territory is for sale to ward off a possible Trump visit.

ELECTION 2020
Kamala Harris has seen a significant drop in polls recently. In the latest CNN poll of 2020 presidential candidates, Sen. Harris (D–Calif.) is down 12 percent since late June. This is the largest drop of any top candidate.
Joe Biden—already leading—was the only candidate to see a significant positive change, gaining 7 percentage points since CNN's late June polling. He's now at 29 percent, with nearest competitor Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) at 15 percent. (Read more about Sanders' new criminal just reform proposals here.)
Warren trailed right behind Sanders with 14 percent, followed by Buttigieg and Harris (both at 5 percent) and Beto O'Rourke (3 percent).
Booker, Castro, and Gabbard all polled at 2 percent.

Facebook yanks "Women for Trump" ad. The social media site said the ad—which featured a photo of women and the caption "The Women for Trump Coalition needs the support of strong women like you!"—was in violation of Facebook policy with regard to gender and advertising. More from The Hill:
Facebook's ad policy prohibits "content that asserts or implies personal attributes," including, among other things, "direct or indirect assertions or implications about a person's … gender identity."
Facebook reportedly pulled the ad following an inquiry from Popular Info.
"We've notified the campaign that the ads violate policy. They cannot continue to run unless fixed," a Facebook spokesperson told The Hill in a statement.

Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.). Sanders may be in it for the revolution, but Harris is in it for the optics.

President Donald Trump doesn't seem to understand why Denmark won't just sell him Greenland.
And so the negotiations begin.
Hello.
Pay the Danes in Lego.
Seriously. I don't see what's the big joke here. Nations always attempt to acquire lands through purchase - or force.
But is there really any precedent among modern, wealthy nation states in the post-colonial era? I mean, there's nothing wrong with asking, I guess.
I just think the whole Greenland thing is marvelously weird. Keep international relations weird! It doesn't seem to be going any worse than the normal, boring stuff that we are used to.
Truman tried to buy it.
Cause Truman was too much of a *pussy wimp* to let MacArthur go in there and blow out those Commie bastards!

"Good answer. Good answer. I like the way you think. I'm gonna be watching you."
The US has a long history of trying to purchase Greenland. Who knew?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposed_United_States_purchase_of_Greenland
Also, what the #EnemyOfThePeople fails to note, is that China recently offered to buy an abandoned naval base in Greenland.
I know Reason assures us that nothing bad can happen from selling the world to Emperor Xi, but some neanderthals think that a Chinese military presence in Greenland is not in the interests of the US.

It's amusing in the "real estate guy being a real estate guy" sense.
They sold us the Virgin Islands
They are now known simply as "The Islands."
On an unrelated note I am not longer welcome there
Depends how you define it. Land reforms can sometimes include purchases both in and out of the nation-state. It doesn't have to be a strict financial transaction per se. I think this is just more 'see? Trump is nuts' TDS nonsense. There are plenty of examples and precedences. When I first heard this I didn't react because if you have read history, it's par for the course so of stuff.
But here we are. Shit stinks and people think it's new because Trump.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_territorial_acquisitions
par for the course for this sort of stuff. Fuh.
If the story was just "Trump expressed an interest in purchasing Greenland" that would be one thing.
Him explicitly pulling out of a meeting because Denmark is interested in selling†? That would always be worthy of a good head-scratching and make people wonder what's going on.
________
†It is, of course, possible that this isn't the real reason, and is just a cover for whatever the real reason is. But even if that theory is true, that leaves us with President Trump thinking this is better optics then his actual reason. Which, if true, is even more perplexing.
"Him explicitly pulling out of a meeting because Denmark is interested in selling? "
It's simple. The reply was discourteous.
Hit Trump. He hits back twice as hard.
I know about the history. Just seems odd in the post-WWII era. Not that that means it can't or shouldn't ever happen (I'm pretty sure it won't in this case). If it did happen, I would hope that the people of Greenland would have a say.
"
The prime minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, has called Trump's offer "absurd" and said "I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously."
Greenland's Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger said "we are open for business, but we're not for sale."
"
Mette decided to insult, Ane decided to play along and make the most of the attention.
Who got smacked back? It's really not complicated.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ane got an invite to the White House. If Greenland decided they'd rather be a US protectorate, what is Denmark going to say?
If Ane has sense, she'll chum up to Trump and squeeze Denmark for more money.
Make Greenland Great Again!
...Trump hasn't let go of his absolutely insane crusade to start buying up another country's land.
WOULD YOU RATHER HE INVADE TO TAKE IT? I mean, really.
It would be pretty hilarious if this compelled Denmark to kick the Air Force out of Thule.
So, you advocate cutting off your nose to spite your face?
I know damn well what that mission in Thule entails. Doesn't mean that I have to support staying there.
Isn’t that where they send you when you have totally screwed up? At least in the movies I have seen.
Denmark makes claims in the Arctic Canada consider sovereign land like when they planted the Danish flag on Hans Island.
Of course, Canada being an immature country having let its military dwindle to nothing off-loading security onto the USA, can't do much about it except maybe send some Inuit Rangers to rip the flag up.
So the Danes can stick their holier than thou shtick pole up their ass.
They are afraid the check will bounce.
Will Greenland pay for the invasion?
Trump's plan to buy Greenland is *insane* despite historical precedent, but Facebook's banning of ads because they confirm to gender norms is merely 'problematic'?

The prime minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, has called Trump's offer "absurd" and said "I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously."
Translation: Sharpen your pencil, Mr. President.
Greenland costs the Danish government close to a billion dollars a year. Chump change for the country that seems to be able to print its own money. But significant for a place like Denmark.
Gonna have to do better than the $100 million Truman offered.
Greenland's Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger said "we are open for business, but we're not for sale."
SO THEY WANT TO PLAY HARDBALL.
Can we offer them Portland in trade?
Fools! If only they were stupid enough to take it.
If Trump pulled that off, he really would be the greatest negotiator of all time.
The irony of Trump picking this fight is that Denmark is practically an ethno-nationalist state compared to the rest of western Europe, much less Scandanavia. Cultural assimilation classes for immigrants are mandatory and they've shoved a bunch of their unwanted immigrants/"refugees" onto a deserted island and told them to fuck off.
Good for them. Funny how Denmark, Poland, and Hungary don't seem to have a terrorism problem. Meanwhile, the beloved "refugees" are throwing grenades at each other in Sweden.
Good idea. We could buy Greenland and start sending Guatemalans there.

Maybe he should talk to the Greenland government. They are mostly self-ruled. Though they are heavily subsidized and may not have the legal power to split from Denmark.

"Kamala Harris has seen a significant drop in polls recently."
I'm confident it's only temporary. Democratic voters are too smart to fall for Tulsi Gabbard's outrageous distortion of her record as a progressive prosecutor.
#LibertariansForHarris
Tulsi Gabbard deserves a hearty thanks from a grateful America.
I would love to thank her in private. I'd thank her brains out.
So would I. I don't get the people who says she isn't hot. I think she is very hot. And seems like a normal person that you could stand to be around.
It's too bad she won't pick up much, if any, of the support she cost Harris. Too bad, she deserves it.
Harris might make a comeback--she's clearly still a DNC darling due to her being Black Hillary--but the party hacks and media shills are probably going to be pushing Warren a lot more now.
Biden's really only competitive at this point due to nostalgia and the fact that he still appeals to Rust Belt voters. The man has clearly gone senile and blew his best chance for President when he deferred to Hillary in 2016.
I saw somewhere yesterday that Biden and Bernie are the only two Democratic Candidates who are beating Trump in head to head polling. When you consider how biased the polls generally are against Trump, that is very bad news for the Democrats. Likely they all are behind Trump right now and Biden and Bernie are the only two who are even competitive. And I don't see either of them as having a snowball's chance in the general election. Biden is senile and Bernie is nuts.
And according to Biden's hausfrau, "Sometimes you just gotta swallow."
The only country that should be thanking Tulsi Gabbard is Russia.
#GabbardRussia
Tulsi Gabbard deserves a hearty thanks from a grateful America.
I generally agree with this sentiment vis a vis Senator Harris.
Although I am certainly no fan of Rep. Gabbard's economic platform, her (very outspoken) non-interventionist tendencies appeal to me.
Indeed. I'll probably vote Tulsi in the primary just for saving us from the dreaded prosecutor. That and I think Tulsi is better than the rest of the Dems, despite her support for some insane policy proposals.
Even Dem voters can spot a phony.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/poll-63-expect-trump-reelection-up-from-43
63% of voters think Trump will be re-elected. I had the misfortune of being stuck at a birthday party of a friend last weekend full of Beltway Progs. They seemed pretty demoralized and resigned to Trump winning election. They also were in agreement that the Democratic candidates are all bat shit crazy. They were of course going to vote of the nominee crazy or no because "Orange Man Bad" and all that. But, they admitted the entire party had lost its mind. When you have lost Monkey County Progressives, you have lost crazy America. Wow.
Two of their candidates, one of whom was getting a tongue bath from the media as recently as this spring for being a Kennedy clone, campaigning for President while in Mexico embodies how much of a useless clown show the Dems have become.
Warren's a hectoring, pretentious bitch, but at least she's smart enough to base the primary message of her campaign on economic concerns rather than IdPol.
Warren’s a hectoring, pretentious bitch, but at least she’s smart enough to base the primary message of her campaign on economic concerns rather than IdPol.
Now that you say it, Warren is the sanest one of the bunch. She really is. Not everything she says is nuts. When you think about who Warren is, that is terrifying.
Biden's the sanest one policy wise. He's just a retard and people don't want to give him money because of how dumb he is. Hence this retarded brain surgeon endorsement roll out reminding everyone he's had brain surgery. That's not for the voters but the donor class.
I'd take Tulsi over Warren, if nothing else than for the fact that she's the most likely to actually pull the rest of our troops out of Afghanistan, and might even reduce our footprint in the Persian Gulf and tell Turkey and its Muslim Brotherhood president to fuck off. And while she's endorsing a lot of the exceptional shit that the other candidates are pimping, she doesn't strike me as an ideologue and would be willing to actually work with Republicans without Obama's passive-aggressive bitching through the whole process.
Which is precisely why the party hacks have no interest in her whatsoever.
I would too. I was thinking of the small group that has a chance of winning the nomination, which sadly doesn't include Gabbard.
Warren is an Americanized Dolores Umbridge. hem hem
Warren though can't use IdPol that effective seeing that she got busted for lying about hers. So her campaign not going down that path doesn't give me any solace that her administration wouldn't. I definitely wouldn't rule out "Dear Colleague" letters if she were elected.
Monkey County
I hope you just spelt Montgomery wrong.
I meant Montgomery County but intended to do so.
My birthplace!
I'm glad I made it out
Congratulations; you win 2 years of refugee status.
It has surprised me a bit how many people who are probably reliable Democrat voters readily admit that the party has lost it's mind and the candidates are all fucking nuts. Maybe it's a good sign that they will have to reorganize and move back towards the center.
I wish we could just skip the next year and get to the part where they lose and try something different. Though I'm not terribly confident that they won't come up with something even worse.
It is a good thing that they realize it Zeb. But, like I say, they will still vote Democrat no matter how nuts the nominee is. They need to suffer a McGovern like defeat to come to their senses. But I don't see that happening. And that is a shame because if the Democratic Party is the "too crazy and evil to vote for under any circumstances" party, then there is no way to hole Republicans accountable for anything.
For example, the Republicans have screwed up spending so badly, they deserve to lose the Congress. The problem is that the Democrats would be even worse on spending and spend their time in power doing insane things. So what do you do?
They need to suffer a McGovern like defeat to come to their senses.
A better analogy would be a 1994-style shellacking, which forced Clinton to govern to the center. Trump winning in such a dominating fashion would send the left completely over the edge in the same way it did in '72, when their radical agenda was completely rejected and the press decided the only other option was a palace coup to regain power.
"After making an initial offer on the Danish territory last week—one leaders in Denmark promptly rejected . . .
Do you have a link to how much he offered--or are you just making shit up?
"If you give me Greenland, I promise never to bring you up in tweets ever again! Except for one announcing that I got Greenland from you!"

...the anti-Section 230 proposal offered by Beto O'Rourke in the name of stopping "hate speech."
Let's wait until we see what hate speech identifying algorithm they come up with.
Vox had an article a few days ago that talked about how an anti-hate speech algorithm was nuking comments from a lot of black people on Twitter recently, because they were constantly calling each other "nigga" and "nigger," along with a bunch of other ethnic slurs against people in general.
Of course, they thought this was horrible, because they actually believe black people are no more advanced than children and can't help themselves, therefore the AI is defective for not recognizing that easy racism is just part of "black culcha" and a defense against white supremacy.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/08/20/homeless-people-los-angeles-la-builds-pricey-koreatown-apartments/1984064001/
LA building $700,000 per unit apartments for the "homeless". That is more than about 85% of the houses sold in the US. Maybe everyone should just quit their jobs and go be homeless in LA. LA isn't my favorite city, but I think I would like it if I didn't have to work and got to live for free in a nice apartment.
What do you mean "nice?" How far do you think $700K goes in L.A. after you buy off the pols, the unions, the enviros, the nimbys, etc. etc. You'd be luck to get Motel 6 level room for that paltry outlay.
came to say teh same thing. the apartments are so cheap they will have moldy sheetrock before anyone moves in
the real sad thing is that $700k can get you quite a bit in LA. However, the people living in these units are not going to be the people signing off on the purchase. So, you can bet it will be Motel 6 quality because the government doesn't care.
Except Motel 6 has maid service.
The Justice Department and Food and Drug Administration are ramping up enforcement against unauthorized abortion pill sales.
DoJ and FDA are in totally in the Pope's pocket.
I don't think he has pockets, plus he's busy fighting the scourge of plastic straws.
The real reason that priest got in trouble at the Vatican was because of his extensive use of plastic straws:
"High-ranking priest caught in cocaine-fueled gay orgy in Vatican apartment...
"Capozzi, who on his LinkedIn page calls himself an "expert in canon law and dogmatic theology,” managed to evade suspicion from Italian police by using a BMW luxury car with license plates of the Holy See, which made him practically immune to stops and searches. This privilege, usually reserved for high-ranking prelates, allowed the monsignor to transport cocaine for his frequent homosexual orgies without being stopped by the Italian police. "
https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/high-ranking-monsignor-with-link-to-pope-francis-caught-in-cocaine-fueled-g
But the church could never let Priests marry. Having married men as Priests would corrupt the priesthood in ways having it filled with depraved homosexuals has not.
Married people do some weird *&^* too, let's not blame chastity for these crooks.
I'd like to see the single-people-versus-married people statistics for cocaine-fueled orgies.
I blame the priesthood being taken over by depraved people.
Yeah, but a depraved person, if (s)he gets married, is still depraved.
In the last half century a lot of men left the priesthood, but apparently the ones who *should* have left, didn't, until now when many of them are being belatedly forced out.
But allowing married people in would lower the percentage of the depraved.
I'm skeptical because these ideas are generally promoted by the people who want to promote the sexual revolution, who don't think that anything (with the for-now exception of adult/child sex) is perverted, and think the problem with the Church is it hasn't "reformed" itself enough, though I would think that the results are in on the results of the reform and doubling down is the last thing I'd think would be necessary.
Traditionally, in places with married priests (eg, Ukraine), the priests were local villagers, not from the "higher" classes, aspiring to the middle class for themselves and their sons, but not necessarily a whole lot richer than many of the parishioners among whom they lived, supplementing their income with farming etc., and raising priestly dynasties in their family. I don't know what the abuse stats were, but the usual option of shuffling them around to another parish would have been rarer because they were usually embedded in their communities.
Assuming the abuse rates were less (I don't know), that could be the dynamics of village life where you have to live with the same neighbors (whom you know) in a small town - so I don't see how that could necessarily transfer to the U. S. or other countries.
To paraphrase Shika, "married people commit depravity at a lower rate than the non-married."
"I blame the priesthood being taken over by depraved people."
Sounds like the DNC.
Wikipedia says Harvey Weinstein had two wives (in succession, not simultaneously), the second only left him after the scandals came out.
He was Jewish and never became a priest.
Yeah, but the point about marriage is that HW's wives didn't cure his propensities.
I suspect if you look at the offenders in the Boy Scouts, you'll find some married men.
they were always the best kind.
If they allowed priests to marry perhaps Martin Luther would never have left the church and started the reformation, although they probably wouldn’t have allowed him to marry a nun.
You do know that other religions are also having abuse scandals, right? The main difference is that the Catholic Church is more hierarchical, and more able to hide abuse and cover-up, which means instead of getting a trickle of "this pastor was caught banging hookers" and "youth minister caught diddling kids", you get a huge info dump of decades of abuse at once.
Which is to say, the problem isn't straights, gays, celibates or married, it's the power.
I fail to see what he did wrong.
Violate baptismal and ordination vows, or even the standards expected of virtuous pagans?
I love you Eddy, but I don't take my definition of virtuous from Catholicism (nor Christianity as a whole)! 🙂
I took that comment to mean that the problem was violating the vows, not that the vows themselves were themselves good.
You don't have be Catholic or Christian to think that forswearing yourself is bad.

Holy shit, this bullshit has got to stop at some point. How the fuck are you going to explain this to someone that doesn't speak English as their first language? This is some top-shelf pie-in-the-sky privileged white lady bullshit.
Can you imagine trying to live your life under these rules. Just getting one or two sentences out each day would require so much thought about possible offenses you could be making. No one that adheres to this kind of language policing would even be able to get a simple business transaction done.
Yes Trip it has to stop. Transgenderism is a direct assault on rationality. It is pure insanity.
Or that it is a rule that so defies logic it can be enforced in a purely arbitrary fashion against groups that are disfavored.
This specific rule at this specific company, yes. But the problem is that people are pushing rules like this to become the new social norm. That means that these rules will (and already are) get socially enforced by the public at large, and they're not so selective in targeting their next victim.
exactly these rules are what the UK is forcing on everyone there so its easier for FB to apply the rules to everyone everywhere. this is how other nations can now dictate what is said in America
They wouldn’t......
Just getting one or two sentences out each day would require so much thought about possible offenses you could be making. No one that adheres to this kind of language policing would even be able to get a simple business transaction done.
That's the whole point. It's nothing more than an exercise in power and humiliation (keep in mind that these giant tech companies are often loaded to the gills with autistic trannies in their workforce), and has fuck-all to do with tolerance.
It is worse than that, crap. A woman who calls herself a woman can’t call herself a woman. Remember, this is an organization of women who referred to themselves as women, And that was deemed an improper “application” about their own gender identity.
But please, who are we kidding? Do you think an organization called “women for Elizabeth Warren” would’ve had their ads removed?
Doesn't denying a woman her right to self-gender as a woman violate some sort of progressive commandment or something? Shit man, these people are fucking crazy.
We'll all have to start speaking German with all it's genders.
Everyone must be Neuter from now on.
It's double plus bad.
Hey you, whatever you are, do this now....

Screw that 'Awaiting moderation'
(1) CA now wants “Ethnic Studies” starting at least in highschool, and according to the LA Times:
“Ethnic studies intentionally centers on “people of color, African American/black, Asian American, Latino/Raza and Native/Indigenous Americans to ensure” that their experiences and perspectives, among other issues, are the focal point of learning, the letter said.
“In attempting to make any edits or revisions, we implore the state department of education to uphold the integrity of ethnic studies by not allowing the scrapping” of the draft, said Theresa Montaño, professor of Chicana/o Studies at Cal State Northridge. / ”
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-08-20/will-changes-to-californias-ethnic-studies-curriculum-weaken-it
(2) Well, perhaps it’s not as much focused on ethnicity as it is on lefty propaganda (and we can blame that goddam moonbeam):
“The draft of a new ethnic studies curriculum for California public school students is being slammed by critics. They accuse it of espousing bias against Israel and Jews, defining capitalism as a “form of power and oppression” and promoting a far-left-wing political agenda. The pushback has been so strong that California education officials say the curriculum “needs to be substantially redesigned.”
A law signed in 2016 by then-Gov. Jerry Brown (D) mandated that California create an ethnic studies course. An advisory committee constituted mostly of K-12th grade teachers and professors was appointed in 2018 by the State Board of Education to draft a curriculum that could be used by local school systems to create their own courses.”

Trump hasn't let go of his absolutely insane crusade to start buying up another country's land
Because such a thing has never happened in the history of this country ever.
I think it's pretty damn rare. Usually some country just invades the place and takes it over.
Sure. But it's not insane. It's perfectly rational. It may not be realistic for all sorts of reasons. But it's not insane. And it is theoretically a win/win for both countries.
Think it's how the US acquired the majority of its land.
Louisiana Purchase, Alaska, and however much all those beads got us from the injuns
Yeah, but aside from that.....
But that was land controlled by colonial powers. The world mostly doesn't work that way anymore. Greenland has been a part of the Kingdom of Denmark in one way or another for a long time.
That's not to say it's a horrible or impossible thing. But it is a little unusual.
No, Denmark is literally acting as a colonial power
Beat me to it
And said it better.
Damn!
Greenland was a colony of Denmark...
Yeah, sure. All I'm saying is that it's unusual.
But then Greenland is an unusual bit of territory with an interesting human history. It was colonized several times by the Norse, but now is populated mostly by people who migrated later from what's now northern Canada.
So, Greenland is a colony of Denmark. Got it.
Well, the US bought Manhattan, Alaska, Louisiana (the whole Mississippi/Missouri river valley), the Southwest (Gadsden Purchase), the Phillippines, the Virgin Islands, etc. It's not rare at all.
Yes, of course. Do you really think I meant it is something that never happened historically? I'm saying it's unusual in the modern, post-colonial West.
But then, of course the US obtained Hawai'i by sending in a bunch of immigrants who then got together and staged a coup and imprisoned the Queen and then got President McKinley to annex the islands. If only the queen had been like Trump.
Actually, the US got the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam and Cuba by conquest; ie the Spanish-American War, during which conflict they also annexed the Republic of Hawai'i).
For some reason they gave up Cuba in 1903 (if memory serves), because the Treaty of Paris (1898) required it (again, if memory serves).
Why i say, "For some reason they gave up Cuba...", is because since when has the USA let a little thing like a treaty get in the way of whatever it wanted to do? The USA has a long and ignominious history of breaking treaties.
Also, the US didn't buy Manhattan, the Dutch did. The US aquired it because it was part of the thirteen colonies of Great Britain that declared independence in 1776. England acquired New Amsterdam by conquest in 1664.
Yeah, I'm not seeing the insanity in this instance. Seems like a good idea.
The idea is not crazy except why would Denmark do that? It is not like they need the money. It does demonstrate another instance of the bull in a china shop style of Trump. The standard approach would be a few discreet inquiries to the danish government to see if there is any interest rather that blasting it out so it becomes another media circus and diplomatic pie in the face. But we are used to this now.
Missed in all the kerfuffle over Trump's Greenland craziness was that he also tweeted that Jews basically consider him "the second coming of God", which, you know, Jews don't actually believe in anyway.
Is it possible that he isn't actually detached from reality and that he just has a late night drinking problem? That a lot of this stuff is just him tweeting after he's hit the sauce?
Great contribution, bevis.
You're truly an insightful poster, and I'm totally not being facetious...
Isn't Denmark just the German version of Canada?
Or perhaps Germany is Scandinavia's Mexico.
More or less except different cheese.
Saw something on tv a few years back where guys were hunting for gem stones on recently exposed land in Greenland. They found rubies right there for the picking. Of course the logistics sucked. Everything and everyone had to be transported by helicopter, and that ate most of the profits. But it was still cool to watch.
Trump should do the same for Canada. Everyone gets a free hockey puck!
INT. Trump’s office.
Trump: Ok, we’ll give each Canadian $1 million to buy Canada excluding Quebec. Send the Canadian delegation in.
They walk in with caribou hats, a harmonica and Lacrosse jerseys drinking hootch. They sit down suspiciously eying the President.
Trump: We’re prepared to give you all the free pucks…..
Gordie (jumps from Chesterfield): WE’LL TAKE IT!
They all high five each other and walk out.
Nate to Gordie: Americans are so slow, eh?
Look back at Trump and laugh.
Trump gives big grin and thumbs up.
*I have to flush the script out. Goes back to watching SCTV reruns.
were the Mackenzie Brothers funny to Canadians?
Yes, they were.
Except, as I recall, Quebec is the only province where they actually like Americans. That is from 1978, when I was working on a bridge project in Toronto. I was introduced over the phone to an engineer in Montreal by the project Superintendent, who was also Quebecois, with, "he's OK, he's not English, he's American..".
In English Canada the anti-Americanism is so prevalent that even liberal americans (some of whom actually migrated because of politics) have come back because they cannot take the open hostility.
Jewish people show "great disloyalty" or "a total lack of knowledge" by voting Democrat, said Donald Trump.
The same people who are aghast at this are oftentimes the same people who claim that blacks who vote Republican are traitors to their race, and women who vote for Republicans are gender traitors.
Heck there's even a NYT opinion piece with those very same words about a couple ladies in the Senate.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/opinion/lisa-murkowski-susan-collins-kavanaugh.html
Shhhh.... it only counts when "they" do it.
Before President Trump buys Greenland, he should finish helping Porto Rico recovery from the hurricane. Do we really need more land when we are taking care of the lands we already have?
"We", white man?
Perhaps the Puerto Ricans could finish helping themselves.
They started by finally tossing their governor.
But too little, too late....
They seem to have the Caribbean attitude of corruption and acceptance of the status quo. I know a couple of guys who went over with their trucks to help with the power repairs and tree clearing right after the hurricane. They came back after a couple of weeks, having done almost nothing. They said it was a complete cluster #$%# at the top and nothing could get done.
I was talking with someone the other day who has family in the mountains. They still don't have power restored. That ain't FEMA. That means you need to completely reform how you do things. State run isn't always the best way.
Here in nearby Florida we recovered from Wilma in just a month or so (mostly recovered in 2 weeks), despite devastation covering an area larger than most states. Because the power company brought in crews from all over the country and immediately put them to work.
"State run isn’t always the best way."
Should be engraved above every government doorway and printed in bold at the top of every government form.
Yeah, I've heard similar stories about the Caribbean. My former boss went down to help after some hurricane and was just amazed at the utter lack of work ethic or any sense of urgency to get work done. Both institutionally and culturally.
Which is part of the charm if you are a tourist. No worries mon.
Depends--can he force Puerto Rican truckers to actually pick up and distribute pallets of bottled water, or does he need to go down there personally and drive the truck himself?
If he can throw paper towels he can drive a truck.
But will he drink his own urine?
The Puerto Ricans certainly don't appear capable of doing so.
There are so many silly people out there who still don't understand the way America works and still seem to be confused or in denial about how Donald Trump won in 2016 and why. Using facts and applying logic doesn't seem to help these people. I suspect it's because they're too close to the subject. In other words, because they're part of American society, it's hard for them to see what's happening objectively. To reach such people, it may be necessary to get them to see what's going on elsewhere in the world. After all, social change, cultural change, and political change are driven by the market of ideas, technology, and market forces--things that aren't stopped by international borders or language barriers.
If you were Hungarian during the Revolutions of 1848, you might have imagined that the Hungarian Revolution was happening in Hungary for Hungarian reasons--but that would have been an illusion. Similar revolutions were happening all over the world for similar reasons. We might imagine that American students at Berkeley were protesting in 1968 for American reasons, but students in Mexico City, Paris and elsewhere around the world were also protesting the same kinds things for the same kinds of reasons--at the same time. It's a general rule. The reasons for the rise of fascism in different parts of Europe in the early 20th century, whether in Germany, Italy, or Spain, were also related. If ideas, technology, and market forces spread across borders, why would political change in different countries be unrelated?
Circa 2016, we saw anti-immigrant, anti-elitist, populist movements rise in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA--and it was all for similar related reasons. If you can't see what's happening and why in the USA, maybe take a look at Italy. That's what the future may hold for the USA if classically liberal minded Americans don't wake the fuck up.
Circa 2016, we saw anti-immigrant, anti-elitist, populist movements rise in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA–and it was all for similar related reasons.
What probably set that off, more than anything else, was Merkel enacting a literal open borders policy in Germany, followed closely by the increase in sexual assault cases from Muslims who viewed German women as sluts who didn't care who was dicking them, so long as they were getting dicked.
Much like in France and the UK, a big part of it is that they feel like their wishes have been completely ignored--by elitists who are unaccountable to them. It goes beyond immigration to other issues, as well, I would argue that this is a general rule about ignoring democracy within its proper purview. It always seems to have the same consequences--cross culturally and throughout history--and that, in my opinion, is the definition of "universal".
Physics (at sea level) and math work more or less the same cross culturally and throughout history. Market forces work more or less the same way cross culturally and throughout history. If you violate people's property rights, the consequences are more or less the same cross culturally and throughout history. Add to that list, if you ignore democracy within its proper purview, the consequences are more or less always the same.
We may imagine that ignoring the people's will on an issue within democracy's proper purview will have consequences that are narrowly constrained to being within the scope of the effects of policy, but that isn't the case. The legitimacy of the government itself depends on reflecting the will of the people on those issues that are well within the proper purview of democracy. In fact, that profound dependency on legitimacy is probably what places those issues within the proper purview of democracy.
If enough people don't feel like the government is legitimate unless their input on x, y, and z are properly respected, then that's within the proper purview of democracy--especially if the people have always felt that way about issues x, y, and z throughout history and across cultures. What the policy should be is far less important than the question of whether the people's input should be respected.
Add to that list, if you ignore democracy within its proper purview, the consequences are more or less always the same.
Sure--locally, just look at the 2nd Amendment sanctuary counties in states that have passed red flag laws.
When you pass laws that pander exclusively to the sensibilities and needs of upper middle class urban progressives, don't be surprised if people in the hinterlands come to the conclusion that you don't actually represent them, and resist your efforts to apply your one-size-fits-all ideology.
“We are the only supposed fascists who want a vote"
----Matteo Salvini
WSJ, August 20, 2019
https://www.wsj.com/articles/italian-prime-minister-to-resign-declaring-end-of-government-11566310341?
Salvini is the leader of anti-immigrant, anti-EU, anti-elitist, populist party, whose actions pretty much dissolved the Italian government yesterday. When new elections are held, his coalition will almost certainly win an outright majority of the Italian legislature--they're that popular. Is it hard to see why? Italians are sick of having immigration policy dictated to them by Brussels, and they're sick of seeing their own legislature refuse to do the people's will. If you think Italy is on the brink of fascism now, wait 'til you see what happens if and when taking control of the government through legitimate elections leaves the Italian people still powerless to set their own immigration policies--because the elitists in Brussels effectively overruled them.
There is both a truth and a lie in Salvini's statement about how they're the only "fascists" who want democracy. In truth, he's pointing out how ironic it is that his critics call him a fascist, when he's the only person who seems to want what the people want--and wants to hold an election. There is also a lie. You know who else took power by winning an election? The legacy of the Weimar Republic isn't just the question of whether democracies should be allowed to vote themselves out of existence. It's also the observation that anti-elitist populism is the alternative to legitimate democracy within its proper purview. He probably doesn't want an effective democracy to succeed--not when anti-elitist populism depends on an unresponsive, elitist democracy for the air it breathes.
And so, if you imagine that when a democratically elected government ignores the will of the people on questions like immigration, that it leads to a more tolerant and cosmopolitan society--then you are wrong.
You are wrong in France, where Marine Le Pen made the mainstream party of the left come in third. You are wrong in Germany, where Merkel can only stay in power with help from a mainstream opposition party--and that opposition party only keeps her in power for fear that the far right will take power when she falls. You are wrong in Italy, where the far right is about to take absolute control of the government. You are wrong in the UK, where they're about to leave the EU over this.
And, yes, you are wrong if you think ignoring the American people's will on issues that are well within democracy's proper purview will lead to a more tolerant government in the United States and a more tolerant society. If you're vocal in your support for ignoring democracy when it comes to immigration, you might as well take a job working to get Trump reelected and get paid for it. And God help us if the American people become convinced that not even a populist like Trump can save us from the elitists.
I don't want to live in a bigger version of Italy. As a classically liberal minded American, what classifies as "waking the fuck up?"
Silver lining - lunch is about to get a lot better.
If we had the Westminster system here, politics would be a shambles.
To Trump, "it's not for sale" is simply an opening gambit in real-estate negotiation.
"Look, I've met some Danish people. They were great. Real Great Danes."
Ha.
Hey, if they won't sell, he'll use eminent domain.
I think you mean Manifest Destiny. Which would be a good stripper name.
The White House has gone from insisting the U.S. economy is not on the verge of a recession to saying that if we do have one, it will be "moderate and short."
Good thing we fully unwound the Fed's balance sheet and we've increased the federal funds rate by about 500 basis points so we have a nice cushion to cut in the event of a recession.
Oh wait..
---"Here is the president suggesting that Jews are disloyal if they don't vote Republican. The notion of provisional belonging--that Jews aren't really American or French or whatever if they don't do xx--is an idea with a hideous history."---
You must consider the real fact that the president and his horde of white supremacist and homicidal maniacs [who also fap all over images of kids crying for their parents after the latter were kidnapped by the State's goons] are quite hideous.
Fortunately they're a minority that will be replaced, if one trusts Tucker Carlson's quip that
nationalist socialistsTrumpistas only fill a college stadium. Replaced by far better people, you fucking maggots.Oh piss off you crazy bastard.
maybe consider decaf?
Or Thorazine.
lol. go big.
My white relatives are better than my Hispanic relatives. Just saying.
"You must consider the real fact that the president and his horde of white supremacist and homicidal maniacs [who also fap all over images of kids crying for their parents after the latter were kidnapped by the State’s goons] are quite hideous."
At one time, this person was sane; look at the hideous effects of TDS.
Oh, and fuck off, Old Mex.
>>Joe Biden ... was the only candidate to see a significant positive change
hilarious. beautiful.
This is the first I've heard of this... but from what I've read directly from Trump, I think you're being trolled, media.
How did they go from "Trump asked about it in a meeting" to "Trump made an offer and they rejected it"?
To "insanity, pure insanity"?
I also like how him pulling out of visiting Denmark is now because he was really serious about Greenland per the unbiased media who have magic powers to read his mind.
"'I wonder if other national leaders will preemptively announce that none of their territory is for sale to ward off a possible Trump visit."'
LOL.
Is Alsace-Lorraine back on the market again?
Trump's Twitter account is priceless, particularly when self-aware. Floating the idea of buying Greenland is an interesting and amusing distraction.
Going forward Greenland shall be known as "Trump's Folly".
"content that asserts or implies personal attributes," including, among other things, "direct or indirect assertions or implications about a person's … gender identity."
WTF??! {semantic content = zero}
I hereby charge the entire staff with being bat shit crazy, and red flag them all.
(and, oh by the say, that statement makes indirect assertions about gender)
Fuck Greenland.
Buy Switzerland.
They have great cheese and chocolate there!
I have a friend in Australia whose father was a Danish resistance fighter in the Big One. My friend has a framed letter on a wall in his house signed by both Winston Churchill and FDR commending hin for his work in the Danish resistance.
As a young'n I heard the story from the old man's lips about how as a plumber he was called in to fix the furnace in what the resistance knew to be the Gestapo headquarters and when he went there he was able to put a bomb by the furnace. When it went off the next day it killed everyone in the building. The message I got was, "never mess with the Danes."
90% of Danish Jews survived the holocaust. The story is that as soon as the Danish were tipped off that the nazis were planning to round up the Jews the people began to hide them. They disappeared almost overnight.
The plan came about to smuggle the Jews to nearby Sweden by boat. So they got them to the fishing villages and took them over in the fishing boats and small craft.
For the vast majority when the nazis came to round up the Jews they had vanished thanks to the people of Denmark.
This isn't the first time an offer has been made to buy Greenland.
However, Denmark does need to keep it because when the ice melts next week most of the Danish peninsula and islands will be inundated and the people will need someplace to go without being international refugees.
Well, if they would just stop dumping their ice in the ocean, they wouldn't have that problem, would they?
And bad skin.
Not when you use it right
Sexy weird.
It's absolutely unusual. That doesn't make it insane or foolish.
Its hard to find work in Italy.
Where is the link for the monkey with the coconut?
That's what I'm saying. I'm not talking about all of history. Of course countries bought and sold and conquered territory. I'm talking about in the post WWII world where that sort of thing is relatively uncommon, at least among the wealthy and settled nation states of the west.
But interestingly (and also anecdotally), I know a good number of Jamaicans who work their asses off. Could be the climate.
I believe some of the seasteaders have tried buying or leasing to build the ocean libertopia, Fiji or something but it has not panned out.
That was the mistake that guy in Thailand made. He didn’t pay anyone off.
