Stossel: Sugar's Sweetheart Deal
Sugar subsidies are welfare for the rich. They cost consumers billions a year.
The U.S. sugar program is "Stalin-style price controls," Ross Marchand of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance tells John Stossel.
The U.S. government uses a complex system of loans, domestic quotas, and limits on how much sugar we can import. The goal is to control the price of sugar.
Stossel calls it "welfare for the rich." Economists say the program costs consumers billions a year. And yet the sugar industry makes videos that say "it costs taxpayers nothing."

The consumer is not the primary concern for legislators. I get it. But candy manufacturing jobs? Those people can't cobble together an effective lobby?
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

Stossel is a sugarphobe. Stossel probably eats sugar when no one's looking.
Shilling for Sugar 2020 approves this message.
The federal government diverts huge quantities of water from Lake Okechobee into the St Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers each year to keep the sugar can farms working. The manage to destroy both the Everglades and the rivers.
All while maintaining artificially high prices.
Let's stop calling everything Stalinist. However, influence of the sugar lobby has made the world fat and turned nutrition into pseudoscience meant to support sugar consumption. It may be one of the biggest menaces of our time.
It's no their fault you have no self control.
Great timing because the International Sweetener Colloquium is going on right now in Miami. What a boondoggle! Does anyone know how many rent seekers you can fit on a yacht?
Whay all the hate for sugar when we still subsidize tobacco?
Nicotine's ld50 is way higher than sugar's.
Did you mean lower?
D'oh. Of course I did.
And by orders of magnitude IIRC.
There's plenty of hate to go around.
If we ended sugar subsidies, we'd have enough money to build the wall.
