The Florida Gubernatorial Race Is Over, and Trump Ally Ron DeSantis Has Won

Though not as hotly contested as the U.S. Senate race, Florida's gubernatorial race has a clear winner.

The election is finally over for at least one disputed Florida race. The victory previously declared for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron DeSantis was confirmed by a recount on Thursday.

Following the Tuesday midterms, DeSantis claimed victory over Andrew Gillum, his progressive Democratic challenger and the mayor of Tallahassee, with Gillum initially conceding.

But the contentious margin between incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott triggered an automatic recount. As Nelson and Scott shifted their campaign strategies to winning the recount, Gillum on November 10 tweeted out, "I am replacing my earlier concession with an unapologetic and uncompromised call to count every vote."

On Thursday, a final tally placed DeSantis ahead of Gillum and beyond the margin needed for a second recount.

Florida has been governed by a Republican for the past 20 years. Despite this, the race between DeSantis and Gillum was settled by a mere 0.7 percent in the first tally.

Many Republicans of DeSantis' stripe, who portray themselves to be as Trumpian as possible, either lost their elections, or barely won.

DeSantis has largely ignored the recount and has already appointed a transition team to prepare for his new role as governor.

  1. Well, no income tax will be introduced – – – – – – –
    Now, about that senator

    1. Thank God.

Though I kinda thought one of our ammendments was inoculation against a Gillum win. 2/3 vote for new or raised taxes.

      1. Except that giving the vote back to criminal blacks means no Republican will ever win again.

        1. Settle down there, Mr. Collectivist.

      2. I pity you not being able to enjoy all those wonderful blue state government services. I’ll fill you in on them as soon as I think of what they are.

  2. More TDS .

  3. Who won Ag commissioner? That’s the grand prize!!

    1. I’m waiting for results of the race for Sanitary District Director.

    2. Ag commissioner issues concealed carry permits in the Sunshine State (and to non-residents). The Broward and Palm beach undervote in the Senate race may reflect that the ballot box was stuffed for local and statewide races including the Ag Commissioner and Gillum, but not for the Senate contest for some reason. Or maybe Florida voters are easily confused.

  4. Florida Man beats Florida Man to become Master of America’s Penis.

  5. Whenever a Republican wins an election by a narrow margin (say, under 5 percentage points) it’s a safe bet that voter suppression or other dirty tricks accounted for the difference. This election was clearly stolen. I’m still happy with the magnitude of the #BlueTsunami but it should be even larger.

    #LibertariansForGillum

    1. The Democrats will have to find a way to pack the Governor’s Mansion with a couple of their own to cancel out the stolen seat.

    2. It’s ok, whenever a Democrat wins an election by any margin it’s a safe bet that there were more dead voters than living. You may be happy with the #BlueRipple in the puddle but both Barack and Bill did worse in their first mid-term elections so it’s hardly something to crow about.

#YouReallyNeedAHashtag? I suppose there’s a way to be more pathetic but I can’t think of what it could be.

      1. He puts ketchup on pizza.

  6. Over? In 2000 Bush43’s win was certified and the Gore team still took the result to court. When SCOTUS finally put all the shenanigans to bed, the re-certified vote count was lower than the first one. This result hasn’t even received the first certification.

  7. “I am replacing my earlier concession with an unapologetic and uncompromised call to count every vote.”

Sheesh, is Hillary *ever* going away?

  8. within a 0.5 percent margin, triggering an automatic recount under state law. (Florida does not have runoff elections for these races.)

Emphasis added. How about if the results are within a 0.5 percent margin, NONE OF THE ABOVE wins?

    1. I’m down with that as long as neither candidate gets to run again for any office for at least a decade.

      1. Why? It’s not their fault they’re so damn popular!

  9. I just want to know when the Georgia race is going to be over. I have some knowledge of Georgia election processes and no freaking idea where new votes can be coming from two weeks after the election. There aren’t that many mail-in ballots, and they should have been counted and sent in the night of the election, along with all the machine votes.

Sure, they decided it’s close enough that they’re cracking open the provisional ballots, but even that shouldn’t be taking this long.

    1. no freaking idea where new votes can be coming from

Aren’t they generally found in car trunks or closets?

    2. There’s a caravan still on route, they haven’t cast their votes yet.

      *ducks*

    3. Supposedly tomorrow is the day that a federal judge gave for provisional voters to fix their ballots.

There’s not enough of them to change The winner being Kemp.

  10. I did see that Nelson changed his talking point from “Count every vote” to “Count every legal vote” so that’s an encouraging sign that at least one Florida Dem has a scruple. Unfortunately, most of the rest really do mean “Count every vote”, legal or not.

    1. What they really mean is ‘count every vote for me’.

      1. “Every voice, however ill-informed or insane, should be heard.”

    2. No,he doesn’t. Well, maybe just the one. He’s also said that he’s lived on a ranch all his life and AR-15s are for killing not for hunting so….

  11. This midterm was a sound rejection of trump

    1. Indeed, and specifically a rejection of his white nationalist immigration policies, as Shikha Dalmia has noted.

      #AbolishICE
      #NoBanNoWall
      #OpenBorders

  12. Wait until 2020 when hundreds of thousands more Republicans get out to vote than voted in midterms.

    1. Still making dumb predictions?

      “Red Wave” LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  13. I guess some of the dead people stayed home…

  14. I just want to know when the Georgia race is going to be over. I have some knowledge of Georgia election processes and no freaking idea where new votes can be coming from two weeks after the election. There aren’t that many mail-in ballots, and they should have been counted and sent in the night of the election, along with all the machine votes.

  16. Reason has avoided covering all the exciting drama from Boward county for some reason.

    1. Because Broward is a complete joke. The Florida of Florida as it has been said.

    2. Reason only covers what Vox tells them.

Vox stopped covering the Florida and Georgia races with such vigor because the Democrats are losing those races.

Reason is a propagandist after all. They need to focus on messages of Democrats winning and there aren’t many of those.

  17. Gillum and his ilk might actually win in states like Florida if they didn’t run on the platform of TAXING THE SHIT OUT OF US!

  18. Gillum and his ilk might actually win in states like Florida if they didn’t run on the platform of TAXING THE SHIT OUT OF US!

    1. A lot of people voted for that. They just want all the wonderful government services blue states get.

  19. Counties are political subdivisions of the state so I don’t understand how the failures of a county to properly count the votes in a timely manner isn’t the responsibility of the state. This bullshit about the sec of state not accepting recounts that missed the deadline is bullshit. Its the state’s own negligence that created the problem in the first place.

  20. Lefties trying to steal multiple election races, hardest hit!
