High School Principal Apologizes for Prom Tickets That Say 'Party Like It's 1776'
"It was insensitive and irresponsible not to appreciate that not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776."

Dennis Perry, principal of Cherry Hill High School East in New Jersey, has apologized for an insensitive message on the tickets for this year's prom: "party like it's 1776."
That's problematic, since students of color would definitely not have felt like partying if they were alive in 1776, when slavery was still legal.
"It was insensitive and irresponsible not to appreciate that not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776," said Perry in a letter to the community.

It's not clear whether any students were actually bothered by the message. Tthe local news stories don't quote any angry kids, or even concerned parents. The offended parties seem to be local activists, who said the incident was just another example of Cherry Hill ignoring the needs of students of color:
Lloyd Henderson, president of the Camden County NAACP East chapter, also praised the principal's immediate response but called the incident "another example" of a school culture in which "the African American students' needs are not considered along with the rest of the school."
Two points. First, the prom will take place at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center. Given that the Constitution wasn't actually created in 1776—that would be the Declaration of Independence—perhaps Perry should have suggested his students "party like its 1787." This call to action would have bothered the same people, but with the added benefit of being historically accurate.
Second, is there any point in history that would feel safe for all students to party? The original line is "party like it's 1999," from the Prince song "1999." But gay and trans students might not have felt welcome at the party then. We could "party like it's 2018," but only if we were prepared to ignore undocumented students' fears. I guess everybody just has to "party like it's some unspecified point in the idealized future." I wonder if that fits on Cherry Hill's prom tickets, which are being reprinted with the offensive message scrubbed.

Our nation is doomed.
That's an unusually strong reaction to Rico's 'Teen Beat' writing style.
Doooooooooooooooooooomed!
What a bunch of pussies.
I've made $60,000 so far this year working online....I am using an online business opportunityI heard about and I've made such great money.(Mike@).... It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it....
Heres what I do............ http://www.profit70.com
So blacks, whose ancestors were mostly enslaved in 1776 should feel like partying because a bunch of land owning white men could beat them on a whim? I kinda see their point on this one, and the right to voice and opinion and protest. I'm guessing you don't like those sorts of freedoms...
And whites should feel like dying in childbirth, from smallpox and yellow fever, and a zillion other now-rare things while sweating in the undredged swamps of New Jersey with only badly performed acoustic music and no indoor plumbing? I guess the Asian descent kids can't even attend?
Have a sense of humor - "party like it's 1776" means "let's have a colonial costume party".
Wingnuts seem humorless when I mention bigoted, half-educated, disaffected, superstitious, economically inadequate rubes who reside in can't-keep-up southern and rural communities, the depleted human residue on the wrong end of bright flight for generations.
Why can't conservatives exhibit a sense of humor?
It's like you're not even trying anymore.
When groups, such as NAACP, have no reason to exist, they became keenly obsessed with minutiae.
Do these people think that slavery was invented by white people? I really want to know. Do people not realize that slavery was practiced in every single culture and every society for 10,000 years until a few hundred years ago?
Some do. It is borderline sad.
The current president of Turkey is descended from the slaves the Muslims captured from Albania.
The ancestors of African immigrants to America today are far more likely to be responsible for the enslavement of black people than the ancestors of most white people who moved here from Europe in the 20th century.
Erdogan's a janissary? That explains a lot.
It would certainly explain his attitude toward goats.
I wouldn't exactly call it keen.
When groups, such as NAACP, have no reason to exist, they became keenly obsessed with minutiae.
I worry about this with rights, liberty, and morality in general. If there aren't any Hitlers, Maos, Stalins, etc. to point to how would you justify opposition to socialism.
The fact that Venezuela and civil rights in Iran, Russia, North Korea, and Africa are on a back burner on a second stove as far as the media's concerned make it easier for "OMFG! WTF are we gonna do about the alt-right Nazis?" to look legit.
"the African American students' needs are not considered along with the rest of the school."
Hey shitloaf, a stupidly worded prom ticket has no effect on anybody's "needs". It also doesn't deny their personhood either so don't even try to pull that nonsense,
Poorly worded?
So... are black people Americans or not?
I always thought so, but I'm receiving some contrary information these days.
Yes, but those like Keith Ellison are trying to make it their own separate but equal black America.
I hope this finally, FINALLY, brings to light the cruelty of Weird Al's lyrics in his "parody" Amish Paradise.
The offending "lyric":
But if I finish all of my chores, and you finish thine
Then tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699
Listen, y'all. I am 3% Neanderthal, and any partying done after my people have been utterly wiped out by the sapiens race is highly offensive to me.
since students of color would definitely not have felt like partying if they were alive in 1776, when slavery was still legal.
I imagine they would probably want to party even more.
Apparently, Crispus Attucks died for naught.
You got to party for your right to fight.
Part of every day
I'm sure the people bitching and moaning about this prom would consider Crispus Attucks to be an Uncle Tom
Except only 1% of people have any idea what you referenced.
So, are people advocating slavery in the U.S.?
Students of color? How about British students? Shouldn't they be the ones triggered?
I guess the Constitution is right out then.
"It was insensitive and irresponsible not to appreciate that not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776."
Nor can all cultures celebrate what life was like in 1999.
Hell, the last quarter of 1999 was pretty rad for me, but the first three were garbage.
Somebody tell me where I can find Prince. I'm going to talk to him about how insensitive his lyrics were.
If his legacy is preserved faithfully, his ashes have been mixed into the silicone substrate of any number of sex toys.
So people who are oppressed in any way can't party and have a good time? Odd that pretty much all of our popular music has its roots in the music of oppressed black people.
I'm not trying to sanitize history here. Black people were treated terribly under the law and in society for most of this country's history. But that doesn't mean they were always miserable and couldn't have any fun. In any case, it's a stupid fucking prom slogan that doesn't mean anything. We are training people to be bothered by shit that doesn't matter.
In any case, it's a stupid fucking prom slogan that doesn't mean anything.
Hey, it means something. It means that it's probably a themed prom.
And unneeded apologies help that training along. Many of these apologies that fail to challenge wholly inaccurate perceptions are also an insult to the aggrieved's capacity to understand.
The occasional "Are you high?" Response would work wonders.
+1 stereotype
"What are you, drunk?"
I like how you just blow off the women who weren't allowed to vote or the non-property owners who couldn't vote. And what about Indians? Why do you insist on sanitizing history, Zebulon?
This whole business is so incredibly wrong. As a culture, we were wiser in the past, worrying about real injustices, not the bullshit claims of today. We're a nation of fools to tolerate this nonsense.
Well, I do still sort of think that non-property owners shouldn't get the vote. In local elections where property taxes are the main revenue source, at least.
There's a case to be made. I'm not in love with people voting themselves more of my money, either.
At least that way women could vote.
Renters pay property taxes indirectly in that this is one of the costs that the owners' pass on to them. Plus, they don't get to deduct it on federal income tax forms. However, since it is paid indirectly, many may not be aware of how property taxes actually affect them, and may therefore vote accordingly.
No, I'm fact they can't interact with members of oppressor classes in any consensual way.
So, to a prog, all interracial relationships were rape before 1865. I mean 1964. I mean 2008. I mean they actually still are.
Offensensitivity. It's a thing, and it's out of control.
Reality Derangement Syndrome
Nice. I'm gonna have to steal that.
+1
but called the incident "another example" of a school culture in which "the African American students' needs are not considered along with the rest of the school."
Way to omit the concerns of First Peoples, shitlord.
That's what I was thinking. It wouldn't have been togood of a time to be female, asian, anything other than Christian, or a host of other things in America at that time. That's just history. For most of existence it's survived to be 99% of the human race.
Sucked not survived.
Human history also tells us that the oppressed often become the oppressor, and in many cases, groups have been both simultaneously.
Unfortunately, a delusory mindset is taking hold that says otherwise.
And, if you actually stop to think about it, it wouldn't have been too good of a time to be a white, christian male. No electricity, no indoor plumbing, shitty life-expectancy, etc. Yes, I realize it would've been worse to be anything else, but still a shitty time in history for anyone to have been alive.
Instead, how about we party like it's 2018 and (on average) living conditions, life expectancy, technology, medicine, standard-of-living, and human rights throughout the whole world are better than they have ever been in the entire existence of humanity.
Also, chicks had wooden teeth.
But, on the up side, they could take their teeth out.
anything other than Christian
Anything other than Protestant. Catholics and Evangelicals weren't treated well either.
Black trumps Native American. That is why white people who have the audacity to move to black neighborhoods are modern day Christopher Columbuses.
"Indians got it the worst. You wanna know how bad the Indians got it? When's the last time you met two Indians?"
Every day in the computer department?
Feather, not dot.
Way to other Dakota Writescode and Cochise Goodprogrammer.
I always felt weird about this joke. Since where I lived, the answer was usually "today."
I actually once saw a Native American family at Disney World. The fact that this stood out to me does somewhat prove Chris Rock's point.
The blowback of equally or worse reactionism to increasingly extreme, symbol-minded responses is on the horizon. That's not good.
"...Second, is there any point in history during that would feel safe for all students to party?..."
I read a lot of history, and I can't think of any time at all when at least one group of people wasn't getting their asses kicked by another group.
I miss the good old days, when everyone was lost and alone, too busy fighting nature to even find each other.
Things are never as good as they were when we were 12, I will tell you that.
Fuck it, lets go back 3 million years and party with Lucy. She looks like she knew how to have a good time, and we'd all be too busy trying not to be consumed by apex predators to give much of a shit about the cut of people's jib.
This shit is just the literal manifestation of 1st World Problems. When people don't have many real worries, they manufacture wholly illusory ones.
Yes the PC ticket would have told each race (enter best day of your race' history here) and don't tell anyone lest they be offended. That wouldn't offend anyone would it?
Does this mean the kids don't get to get shitfaced on hard cider?
I went and looked up a recipe for Applejack from this, and was reminded that that's a My Little Pony pony.
Everything that's wrong with this modern world is shown in this microcosm. If a man is looking for a stiff drink, they first have to wade through pictures of a cartoon horse.
If a man is looking for a stiff drink, they first have to wade through pictures of a cartoon horse.
What're Bronies, chopped liver?
All the remaining bronyies have fully developed Tuplae at this point. they are no longer accessible to us mere humans.
Yes.
There's also a kid's breakfast cereal with a very similar name (Apple Jacks vs Applejack). Must have been named in a simpler time.
Maybe it's revealing your search history.
First of all, Duck Duck Go doesn't use a search history. Second, all of them were SFW, so there was no way they were using my search history.
"Party like it's 1776"..... and you're a privileged white male. More triggering or less?
I think the only questions asked by the students were; where's the after party and whose getting the beer.
Trump is President and Obama is now a reality TV star. My how the wheel of fate turns.
http://twitter.com/dylanbyers/.....01668?s=21
There is some divide, I think, in what people believe a President should do after leaving. I have always believed that they should exit politics, exit the public eye at large. They have done their job, let them graciously leave and allow the next in line to have their shot. This is a traditional view, I think. Both Democrat and Republican have generally done this.
But I often see people who love, love, love Jimmy Carter for his continued presence in politics and the world since his leaving. And I think that's going to be the same here. I wish he'd go away, but I certainly can't fault all those who still want him around.
I think they should go away and live a quiet life away from politics. But there was no way Obama was going to do that. He is going to be the guest who won't leave.
I agree. But people seem to want otherwise. I don't have any real answer to that. America wants it's aristocracy.
Screw Hillary. Obama 2020!
Maybe he should spend his time personally investigating the circumstances of Trump's birth, or whatever biologists call how his species spawns.
Obama said almost immediately that he was going to find some way to remain involved in politics. It worried me that he might be considering whether it would be appropriate to run for another office.
I guess Taft became head justice of the Supreme Court. So it does happen.
I think age also has something to do with it. Carter, Clinton & Barrack all were in their mid 50s when they left office. Ford, Reagan, Bush 1 & 2 were all over 60 when they left office. Of course party affiliation could also be the case.
I would say Clinton has largely stayed out as well. I don't think it's just party affiliation. I think Carter and Obama are the two counters only. And really, Obama might still slowly fade from view. Though so far he's been still quite present.
J.Q. Adams served in the House of Representatives, and Andrew Johnson in the U.S. Senate, after their presidencies.
And Howard Taft on the Supreme Court.
I think they should go away and live a quiet life away from politics. But there was no way Obama was going to do that. He is going to be the guest who won't leave.
Gotta say, i've really enjoyed W's rebirth as a surprisingly prolific outsider artist.
Obama would never be capable of something so gauche as outsider art. In a similar vein, they'll probably have to call his show something other than reality tv...which is just, ugh. Like "speaking truth to power" tv
Yeah, it's amazing. But he does it quietly. He did a charity book, and that's about it I think.
How far back do you have to go to call it a non-partisan tradition?
You apparently don't think Obama is staying out.
Bush Jr. mostly has.
Clinton didn't.
Bush Sr. sort of did... until his son ran for office.
Reagan did, but he was also dealing with Alzheimer's.
Carter didn't.
From there my knowledge gets shakier and shakier. Ford might have, Nixon had good reason to hide, not sure about Johnson, and Kennedy was dead.
So I'm not sure it's so much that "it's tradition" as "presidents who leave the presidency in poor graces keep a low profile".
Ford did, Nixon did, LBJ did as far as I understand. Eisenhower as well.
It's a bit of a tradition going back to Washington. Same with the two term limit thing, which used to just be convention rather than law. We could also say it has something to do with more media now as well. But there was some trends set by Washington to at least imply this.
And I agree. It is largely non-partisan. If you think I'm trying to say it's not, then I wouldn't have mentioned that Clinton largely did so as well.
Nixon couldn't hide forever.
"Poor graces"? Judgment call. Your list actually says "Republicans keep a low profile, Democrats don't."
One thing is that Carter and Obama were both pretty young presidents. And both not very good at being president. Certainly not ready to retire after their terms. I suppose Clinton and Bush weren't much older. Bush has done a good job of going away. Clinton less so, but I suspect he fades as Hillary becomes more and more irrelevant and forgotten.
Presidents have all been reality tv stars for as long as there has been television. Trump is merely apotheosis.
On Shabbat, we party like it is the World to Come, despite how angry this makes the Romans.
Lots more space without all those damned gentiles running around.
High School Principal Apologizes for Prom Tickets That Say 'Party Like It's 1776'
Maybe it's just me, but it seems incredibly racist to suggest that black modern-day high school students have more in common with slaves from 250 years ago than with their fellow non-black high school students
I'm guessing at some point in the past this HS principal failed to pucker up and kiss the NAACP's ass hard enough. Once you've failed to atone for the sin of being white, no amount of wokeness will ever be enough to make up for it.
Not necessarily, he could just be taking advantage of a business opportunity. If you're mongering grievances you know there's a lot of competition just now so you keep a sharp eye out for bargains and grab it before somebody else scoops it up. I mean, just in this thread there's mention of half-a-dozen other greavers that could have latched onto this prize.
Party like it's 1984?
^ Comment of the thread
You wanna know why we have a problem with school shootings? Here is a great example. The principal makes a huge issue about a sentence on a ticket because of what assumes student of color will feel. Before anyone says a word, he makes a huge issue out of something that I would guess most students did not even look at. The issue is school administrators and faculty are so hung up with their own political agendas and ideology, they make mountains out of molehills. I would not be surprised if there will now be students who protest about the tickets because basically this moron has said you should be mad about it.
"Man, Principal Perry is a dick. I'm gonna shoot up the school."
I'm not really seeing the connection.
Well, apparently the last guy did it because some girl rejected him.
I guess the principal shouldn't have allowed that to happen.
I guess the principal shouldn't have allowed that to happen.
In reading through all the comments, yours most closely hits the point. This is an example of the supreme arrogance exhibited by the public "educationists". What force in the universe anointed this principal with the authority to decide what might or might not be offensive to anyone? On the school's website, his title is "Dr", meaning Doctor of Education (EdD), a degree so worthless that Harvard stopped awarding it. The Education establishment has co-opted Hillary Clinton's use of the African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child", substituting "educate" for "raise". But, America is not Africa and in those villages, the right to intervene in the raising of one's child was given voluntarily by the parents to those in the village they trusted. Under our compulsory school laws, parents have little say. The educationists have self-defined themselves as the "professionals" who know better.
No more Toga parties either. Any ancient civilization that wore togas had slaves.
These young people are morons.
What young people? The principal apparently decided to apologize before anyone even complained.
Pre-thought crime apology.
The principal apparently decided to apologize before anyone even complained.
Genius PR move, really. If he hadn't apologized would anyone be talking about his shitty HS's shitty prom? No, they wouldn't.
Any ancient civilization that wore togas had slaves.
Passive aggressive at its finest.
Really puts the "ass" in "passive aggressive."
We talkin' Tony?
Rarely.
... talkin' Tony?
Worst. Christmas Present. Evar.
Course the idiot folded like a cheap suit instead of aggresively defending what he said and why he said it with a supine apology.
Rule one dealing dealing with the perpetually offended, read old-fashioned bullies, always fight back, never go on the defensive cause if you do they'll be back with more.
Ironically, probably the only people in North America who had anything resembling a modern party in 1776 were African slaves.
Are you aware just how much alcohol was consumed back then? Franklin alone drank enough to float Old Ironsides.
If they drank the water, they'd have suffered and then most likely died.
Drinking yourself into a stupor doesn't sound like a good party to me. But to each their own I suppose.
Party like it's 1776 and then wake up early to watch the Royal Wedding!
Party like it's 1776 and then wake up early to watch the Royal Wedding!
Now that would have been truly offensive.
That's problematic, since students of color would definitely not have felt like partying if they were alive in 1776, when slavery was still legal.
That's racist. In revolutionary America, not all blacks were enslaved.
just the ones that liberals care about
Not so good to see my Alma mater in the news for this. I'll think twice about partying like it's 1988 with them this fall.
What does New Jersey have to do with the American Revolution?
/sarc
They had to put the Battle of Minmouth on hold while Molly Pitcher finished driving the indians out of Hoboken.
What? Where are you from, Philadelphia?
New Jersey was a key strategic colony for uniting the colonies and later the states. Washington made his famous crossing of the Delaware on Christmas Eve to roust the Hessians out of New Jersey.
History is made by brave and hard-driving people, and it's forgotten or not known by un-read, un-educated people.
I hope he's forced to take sensitivity training and fired after.
Sensitivity to what? Imagined slights and made up ideas?
I lean liberal on a few issues and even I find this political correctness to be awful. We got snowflakes all riled up about national anthem protests and we got snowflakes on the left that are killing our freedom of speech in schools.
This is beyond stupid. What if they said party like it's 1940? Should jewish people express outrage about a hard time they had to go through? Some group of people have suffered every year of history. What is more annoying is the lack of enough debate in the school about how stupid the protest is.
Don't know about colored students, but any redcoats will be offended.
Someone has to teach these children that this is meant to be semiformal affair, and that means black tie!
It means powdered wigs and white silk stockings.
It means put a feather in your cap.
And let the honeys call it 'macaroni'.
Party like it's 1776 is a line calculated to trigger every Tory snowflake from Brandywine to Morristown--
What kind of country is it where people have to stand in line for ten generations for reparations for great-aunts getting scalped in the Seven Years War?
I would like an apology from that assclown for asking us to address him as "Doctor".
I only address a PhD as doctor in a professional setting. Otherwise I reserve "doctor" for physicians.
" The offended parties (always) seem to be local activists . . ."
Local activists are always offended by something or they wouldn't be activists, they'd be normal people.
Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."
I would say that the offended parties of local activists are not committed to anything but the rush of the narcotic called "activism". It is a habit. And it's addictive. Ask any intellectually honest activist.
"I would say that the offended parties of local activists are not committed to anything but the rush of the narcotic called 'activism'. It is a habit. And it's addictive. Ask any intellectually honest activist."
It also comes with as good a paycheck as a Grievance Studies major will find out there.
I just got paid 7k dollar working off my laptop this month. And if you think that's cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over 12k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less. This is what I do
+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ http://www.socialearn3.com
I guess People of Color are not really Americans and do not celebrate the creation of the country they live in and provides them freedom. I say lets just treat them as they would be if they still lived in Africa or some other SY^%$HOLE Country where Slavery is still in place or where people have no freedom.... I mean if you don't like it hear MOVE... There are about 190 other countries in the world they could go to.
Safe guards? Are those like life guards in the British Army?
Screw all these whiney bitches. Lincoln had the right idea, it's too bad he got assassinated. He wanted to send all the slaves back to Africa so they could be free back over there. We would have saved ourselves a hell of a lot of trouble if that had happened.
Party like it's 1776? Gotchya -- I'm throwing all the tea into the harbor! (or was that 1775?)
"Never apologize Mister, it's a sign of weakness"
It's amazing how the same people who declare they will not be victimized only seem to exist / get off to their own victimization. It's the same patting on the head, low whispers.....but the black folks might could get offended, y'all.
That's the most offensive and racially insensitive part about all of this PC hooplah - we're literally taking leaps and bounds to baby and protect an entire culture because they can't handle it. White men are openly victimized and blamed every day on social media by plenty of people in power....and yet why is an entire race and sex targeted and so openly blamed but we go completely opposite for another culture and race....because clearly white men can 'handle it' and the black race cannot.
This divisive, petty bullshit is the true foundation of racism.
"...we will do better as a school community...to produce well thought out appropriate communications."??
So Dennis Perry announces he is now the self-appointed "thought/speech police" for Cherry Hill High School? And he will decide what is "appropriate communications"? Do students have to clear "communications" with him before publishing? Of course! How else can Dennis be sure they are "doing better"? Isn't that implied in his promise?
What's next? Will POTHUS issue a proclamation declaring all "wage slaves" their freedom from the tyranny of their bosses? Will they be free to work when they chose and as they see fit? Will this make him a national hero for the working class?
How did that work out for the workers in the USSR? Were they better off under a public boss, without those evil capitalist war-monger, wage-slave drivers?
