Trump Bravely Kills the Already Dead DACA Fix
Only a man with a big heart can dump on foreign workers while enjoying their services.
To spread good cheer on Easter Sunday, President Trump tweet stormed that the DACA fix to legalize Dreamers was off the

table because it had become a magnet for Latin Americans. He demanded, for the nth time, that Congressional Republicans use the nuclear option to pass border legislation because "our country is being stolen" (a claim, Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol wryly observed, probably sounds better in original German).
Trump's claims are as patently absurd as his motives are clear. DACA cannot possibly be any kind of an attraction for anyone not already in the country because no one who entered after June 15, 2007 would be eligible for legalization under any scenario. Trump has a tendency to fill the gaps in his knowledge by confabulations (as he himself boasts) but he can't possibly not know this. So what's going on?
Basically, he is pretending that he is still calling the shots on an issue that he lost because he overplayed his hand. Thanks to the influence of White House's resident nativist, Steve Miller, he spurned a clean DACA-for-wall-deal that was his for the taking. It would have given him everything he wanted on border security—including $25 billion for a useless wall and more agents to patrol it—allowing him to fulfill a key campaign promise. Instead of eagerly grabbing it, he upped the ante and demanded a nativist version of comprehensive immigration reform that would have even cut legal immigration in half, causing a revolt in his own party.
Trump has changed his tune on the Dreamers so frequently—from initially claiming that he has a "big heart" and he'd take care of them to scrapping DACA and taking them hostage to advance a grand restrictionist agenda—that no one takes anything he says seriously anymore. Therefore, he has now decided to walk away from a deal that died weeks ago to cover over the fact that he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It is not easy to be "winning all the time"!
All of this is terribly tragic for the Dreamers, whom vast majorities of Americans support legalizing, not to mention America itself given that the country has invested so much in them only to potentially lose them when they reach the most productive period of their lives.
But Dreamers, regardless of whether Congress offers them "amnesty" or not, are a waning issue as is the undocumented population in general because net flows on the southern border are now negative and not likely to pick up any time soon—or ever. The undocumented population for a decade has been steadily shrinking for the simple reason that, since the Great Recession, more Mexicans have been returning to Mexico than entering the United States. That's because Mexico, along with the rest of Latin America, has completed its demographic transition and doesn't have a massive surplus of underemployed young men seeking better jobs and a better life abroad. (Demographic transition refers to a situation when a country has modernized enough so that its infant mortality rates have dropped but not so much that its fertility rates have followed suit, resulting in a population boom. Every country in the world except for sub-Saharan Africa has completed this transition.)
The caravan of Central Americans featured on Fox News that aroused Trump's ire and prompted the volley of tweets consisted of asylum seekers fleeing violence in their home countries who would have turned themselves in at border checkpoints and petitioned for shelter through normal established channels—not illegally scaled walls. Such flows have always existed—and will continue to do so—but unless Mexico and its surrounding countries turn into Syria, America won't face a "big flow of people" as Trump breathlessly claimed, just an occasional trickle that is well within its capacity to absorb, nativist fear mongering notwithstanding.
Trump reportedly fired his tweets from Mar-a-Lago, his super exclusive resort that runs on the back of cheap foreign labor. It takes a special knack to dump on people while enjoying their services. But Trump, the man with the "big heart," was up to the task—on Easter no less.

The love affair between neoliberals masquerading as libertarians and neoconservatives has been really telling.
Bill Kristol is certainly faint support in my mind.

Oh good, a Shikha post on immigration.
Time to get the popcorn!
Speaking of DACA and immigrants, this headline seemed to be a curious bit of narrative spinning:
Why are various Asian and Mexican immigrants an 'unlikely foe' to a homeless plan in Orange County.
Methinks that the constant whinging here at Reason that Immigrants are a 'reliable' progressive voting bloc may be wrong. I also come away with the impression that the reporter also thinks they're a reliable progressive voting bloc.
Some White People was my nickname in college.
"Some White" was my nickname at the city pool.
I saw it spelled out in a spider web.
It's not "wrong", it's just not innate.
Or to put it in other words... there's quite a few people that would probably be conservatives/Republicans if conservatives/Republicans hadn't spent so many years vilifying them.
Absolutely. John (to name one) has whinged that we should limit immigration because many wouldn't pass an ideological purity test, and that many reflexively vote for progressive issues.
If it takes immigrants to stop this crackpot homeless policy shit, I say open the damned borders.
Correct me if I am wrong, but John has not premised his immigration position upon a would be immigrant's ability to pass an ideological purity test.
You're wrong; John has deplorable opinions about everything.
let's get a link then
Libertarians love immigration, but immigrants don't love libertarianism.
Apparently open borders libertarianism is a suicide pact.
One of the benefits of minority foreigners is that they are culturally less purposefully suicidal and self hating than western whites.
That still doesn't make their preference Big Government a good addition to the US.
She says the illegal population had been steadily shrinking and links to CNN which links to pew which says there were 11.3 million in 2009 and 11.3 million in 2016, their most recent year.
From the first paragraph of the linked article:
Specifically about Mexicans:
So yeah. Illegal immigrants as a whole have shrunk by 1.2 million since 2007, 0.3 million since 2009, and Mexicans in particular are down 1.3 million since 2007.
What's the issue?
I don't really have a dog in this fight, but... how do we know what the numbers are?
If you have an administration painting targerts on all illegal immigrants and using "eliminationist rhetoric" it's possible they're just getting harder to count.
"How do we know what the numbers are?"
They use scientists and computers.
The Science is Settled!
And none of them have ever voted illegally!
But how do we know that?
Why, it's because their "not allowed to". "Not allowed" to carry guns on school grounds and "not allowed" to murder people didn't stop Cruz...
So you're telling me that illegals have no problem revealing their illegal presence to Pew Research, but would refuse to fill out a census form that asks if they're citizens (where a 'no' answer isn't even an admission of illegal presence).
Either that poll is underestimating their numbers or the census wouldn't. Take your pick.
She used a source that said something completely contrary to what she said it said. 11.3 to 11.3 is not a steady decline.
You must not be familiar with the Million Man Math Made Easy.
Ann Coulter presented plausible evidence in Adios, America that the illegal immigrant population at the time she was writing was in excess of 20 million.
Jesus... he should have killed the bill on Friday and they could have resurrected the bill on Sunday.
Nobody fucks with the Jesus, man. Not even eight-year-olds.
"Only a man with a big heart can dump on foreign workers while enjoying their services"
They should show how much they agree with you by taking their services elsewhere, that would show him.
"The caravan of Central Americans featured on Fox News that aroused Trump's ire and prompted the volley of tweets consisted of asylum seekers fleeing violence in their home countries who would have turned themselves in at border checkpoints and petitioned for shelter through normal established channels"
So why can't they get asylum in Mexico instead of going up through that whole country to get to the United States?
I recommend reading more on this from non-right-wing sources, as the right-wing sources are leaving out pertinent information in order to sell fear.
1) This "caravan" is a sort of civil rights march/demonstration that happens every year. They march up through Mexico and stage a big event at the border and then go away.
2) They go up to our border and *legally apply for asylum." Legally. Remember when Trump, and other conservatives, were saying they weren't against legal immigration? So here we have a very large number of people obeying our laws at the border. I don't quite get the outrage here.
3) They do apply in Mexico. Mexico does grant some. But this particular event is a demonstration. (see #1)
FOX News was calling them an "army." With straight faces, no less. Not that I'm surprised.
You're aware you cannot actually pick and choose where you seek asylum from, right? You don't get to cross Mexico to request it here.
Let us not forget that there are those who are in favor of even more black and brown immigration who sell fear as well.
They cater their fear-mongering to black and brown people as well as to white progressives. The pitch is that whitey does not want to admit any more black and brown people and the failure to admit even more black and brown people would be a disaster because the country would remain majority white.
How many of the white peeps here would just love to move to Kenya? Guatemala? Zimbabwe? Sierra Leone? Honduras? Chad? Nigeria? Lesotho? Venezuela?
What do you consider a "good" country?
Can't be the USA. Most diverse country on earth.
Tony, you've read a post or two of what I think about the Empire.
Tony, do you find it odd that diverseiberls always praise the most homogeneous countries like Sweden to move to or idolize?
There is no obligation under the refugee convention or any other instrument of international law that requires refugees to seek asylum in any particular country. There has, however, been a longstanding "first country of asylum" principle in international law by which countries are expected to take refugees fleeing from persecution in a neighboring state. This principle has developed so that, in practice, an asylum seeker who had the opportunity to claim asylum in another country is liable to be returned there in order for his or her claim to be determined.
So, basically, since these people could have applied for asylum in Mexico, we're entitled to deport them back to Mexico.
Do you have a citation for these claims?
Yeah, I'd be interested in that too.
BTW chemjeff you've been unusually reasonable the past few days. Are you feeling OK?
Oddly enough, Fox News is coming dangerously close to saying Trump's either an idiot or a liar on some of the things he's been tweeting the last few days. When you've lost Fox......
Praising Bill Kristol?
Man, Dalmia will whore it up with anybody who agrees with her.
Make sure you use a condom or 7.
Political realignment across the West
It's the Globalists versus the Nationalist Populists
Reason, Kristol, and the Establishment are the former.
The Donald would secure the respect of more people along the paleo-libertarian - ancap - uncucked conservative spectrum if he came out and unabashedly proclaimed that henceforth his administration was going to impose a moratorium on the importation of black and brown people.
Make no mistake about it, when folks yearn for the return of their country, when they assert that they want their country back, and when they pine for the good ole days, they want I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas, not Feliz Navidad.
Name me one very white country that is not more socialist than the US.
Tony, white people gave us socialism.
Mexicans gave us enchiladas.
Would I be guilty of cultural appropriation for merely agreeing with you and declaring that one of my favorite chain restaurants of all time was El Torito?
When I was in college, I worked at an El Torito in Rhode Island. I was a waiter and host. When I was the host, I would wear a sombrero. I would welcome guests with a hearty, "Bienvenidos!" Although I loved the food, I must confess that it was the fruity margaritas that I liked best.
Lulz at people discussing great Mexican food on the east coast.
Cheese as a main ingredient is mostly an American thing.
I've heard Chop Suey isn't really Chinese food either.
Whites and northern Indians (from India) are the only groups with clear majorities who aren't lactose intolerant.
https://goo.gl/n3XG26
If the countries with the freest markets are the least socialist, then there are a few:
https://www.heritage.org/index/ranking
Apparently there are 13 "white" countries that have freer markets than the US. I'll grant that there's no way that the UK has a freer market than the US, so the rankings are suspect. The US, though, is more socialist and has a less free market than people tend to realize.
Estonia.
If Trump is pointing out that DACA is dead because the Democrats are too ashamed to stand up for immigration, he's right.
This has been obvious since the Democrats dropped their DACA inspired filibuster like a hot potato.
There are lessons to be learned about how NOT to sell immigration.
1) No pity parties.
Americans respect people who make sacrifices to come here, work hard, and become winners.
Presenting immigrants as helpless victims makes American voters contemptuous of them.
I've heard that there are multiple ways to say "thank you" in Japanese, each with a higher degree of contemptuousness.
Americans may have a similar spectrum of contempt for the language surrounding victims. A hero is someone who refuses to be a victim. On the other end of the spectrum are the losers. Americans hate losers, and they're even more contemptuous of losers who want us to feel sorry for them. Tell an all-American hero that you feel sorry for him, and he should punch you in the nose--make you feel sorry for yourself.
Moral of the story--if you want to inspire Americans to action, don't make the people they're sticking up for out to be pathetic victims.
2) Attacking the Midwestern swing voters whose support you need is profoundly stupid.
Call them racists?
Tell them that immigration is a right and their votes shouldn't count?
If you stayed up all night trying to think of a better way to alienate swing voters, you could hardly come up with a better strategy.
La Choy makes Chinese food swing American.
People shouldn't be victims unless they want to whine about being called racists. Truly, a worse horror than having your parents deported.
You really don't get it.
"Moral of the story--if you want to inspire Americans to action, don't make the people they're sticking up for out to be pathetic victims.
On the one hand, you've got:
Warsaw Uprising, Indian wars, Nat Turner rebellion, the people of Benghazi, . . .
On the other hand, you've got the French. Americans call them things like "cheese eatin' surrender monkeys". They became an object of American ridicule for their perceived failure to stand up and fight for themselves.
Another word for victim is "doormat".
No one wants to be "pwned".
Contempt for losers is part of the national character. Making illegal immigrants out to be pathetic losers just makes people contemptuous of them--subconsciously or otherwise. It's a social justice warrior dream to think we're fighting for victims, but it may even be racist in its essence--like the noble savage myth and the "white man's burden".
Millions of illegal immigrants have come here to build productive and prosperous lives for themselves despite all sorts of obstacles--the threat of deportation among them. Present them as they are--rather than pathetic victims--and you'll sell a lot more widgets.
No French naval muscle, no victory at Yorktown.
The French, unlike the Americans, had the sack to rebuff the Neo-Cohen pressure for nation-building in the middle east. Funny, the loser is the guy who says its okay to have his income confiscated so that it can go the to promised land of the Neo-Cohen and for the global vision of the Neo-Cohen.
The French, unlike the fly-over rabble, were astute enough to laugh out loud at the irony of the same red neck hoi polloi cheerleading the likes of GWB and Dickless Cheney in their failed effort to change the name of French fried potatoes to freedom fries.
we get it, you're french and embarrassed by their cowardice
Whether the French deserve to be thought of that way and whether they are thought of that way (and what it says about our national character) are two different questions.
Go into an American prison and the first advice you'll get is to stand up for yourself and fight back if you need to. Doesn't matter whether you lose or get hurt--no one will stand up for a prisoner who won't even stand up for himself.
We don't think much of battered wives who bail their abusive husbands out of the slammer for beating them up--for the third time--either. At some point, Americans start saying, "She deserves what she gets".
90+% of Americans feel sorry for pathetic victims who can't stand up for themselves without our help like they feel sorry for starving children in Africa--not enough to reach into our pockets and give them $1 a month to save their lives.
You want us to really feel for somebody enough to act--show us people who refuse to be victims and start fighting back.
Totally off base. Lots of people buy the sob stories and the bull about the horrors of forcing kids to live in a strange country.
What's wrong about kids having to move to a strange country because the parents had to move? That's just an opportunity to experience cultural diversity!
"2) Attacking the Midwestern swing voters whose support you need is profoundly stupid.
Call them racists?

Never underestimate the power of pathological white guilt. It's worked for decades.
There's a little pushback now, but little reason to think it's a loser on balance.
When whites say enough to antiwhite racial quotas and preferences, then maybe you reevaluate using the tactic.
Until then, the Racist Shriek will likely remain a power weapon against Whitey.
When Americans became really susceptible to white guilt was when blacks started standing up for their rights.
The same thing happened in India.
Americans didn't give a shit about the suffering of Libyans under Qaddafi until the people of Libya kept demonstrating in the streets--despite being targeted by Libyan snipers. They would not stop standing up for their rights.
I'm not talking about whether these tings were right or wrong. I'm talking about what works in the marketing department.
If you want the American people to stick up for the rights of illegal immigrants, don't tell them that illegal immigrants are helpless victims or try to make us feel sorry for them because their situation is so pathetic. That may get you a little bit of support--but not enough to change things. If you want Americans to get behind sticking up for illegal immigrants, present illegal immigrants as adamant, hard working, people who remain unbowed--despite all the obstacles against them.
Making yourself as pathetic as possible wins you the support of your mother--and other mothers of a certain age.
Some people hand the homeless money through their car windows. Most people just look away in disgust.
Whether that's the way it should be is another question. That's the way it is, and marketing requires you to find people where they are--not where you want them to be.
"Probably sounds better in the original German." I am stealing that insult.
Kristol stole it, so why not.
You mean that (((insult))).
a claim, Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol wryly observed, probably sounds better in original German
As did pretty much everything Kristol said while championing invasions of MENA countries.
Anyway, that's pretty racist of Kristol to say. And unself-aware, since the US pretty much genocided Native Americans and held Africans in chattel slavery for centuries. A German could just as easily opine that a saying about slaughtering native peoples or black people being inferior sounds better in the original American English.
Oh, Americans in 2018 aren't responsible for those things? I agree -- nor are the Germans of 2018 responsible for Nazi atrocities.
Some Germans responsible for those atrocities *are* still alive.
They're pushing 100 and above now, but yes, they're really still alive.
Meanwhile, the majority of Americans in the civil war *liberated* the slaves from slavery.
Then went on to help defeat the Nazis.
Then went on to prevent the spread of communist gulag across the planet.
Not bad for evil evil Americans.
DACA cannot possibly be any kind of an attraction for anyone not already in the country because no one who entered after June 15, 2007 would be eligible for legalization under any scenario.
And records of when people entered illegally are meticulously correct and unimpeachable!
This is what I elected Trump to do -- secure the border and send back illegals. I wish he was doing more of it, but I'll take what I can get.
He is busting the cloud; securing the border, not so much.
Of course, records of Trump administration "accomplishments" regarding border security are meticulously correct and unimpeachable.
"securing the border, not so much." Unfortunately, but, as I say, if killing DACA is what I can get today, I'll take it.
And records of when people entered illegally are meticulously correct and unimpeachable!
Right! And we can fully expect Trump to keep us accurately apprised of the ongoing success of his efforts to "secure the border" and "send back illegals"! No way will he cook the books or selectively tweet the results! So much winning!
Non Sequitur of the Day Award!
"Trump's claims are as patently absurd as his motives are clear. DACA cannot possibly be any kind of an attraction for anyone not already in the country because no one who entered after June 15, 2007 would be eligible for legalization under any scenario"
Shikha goes for the Big Lie, calling the patently obvious patently absurd.
Every amnesty granted is another sign that the amnesties will never stop coming.
Of course it's an incentive to further illegal immigration. Duh.
All Reason has left to defend Open Border is Open Gaslighting.
Dreamers are just one bait-and-switch agenda item on a not-so-secret agenda to incrementally abolish all limits restricting the world's 7 billion from moving here tomorrow.
Probably not all of them.
Even our Ruling Reptiles don't want to entirely kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
They'll stop once they've imported enough big government voters and social division to cement their rule.
"DACA cannot possibly be any kind of an attraction for anyone not already in the country because no one who entered after June 15, 2007 would be eligible for legalization under any scenario. "
It's not complicated: You offer people in your country illegally amnesty, more people come to your country illegally, because they rationally assume that you'll do it again some time down the road. All they have to do is hide in your country until the next amnesty.
The only way to rebut that assumption is to not do it this time.
Or we could just heavily scale back the immigration laws and make it a lot easier for families to legally come here and become part of society; with or without the chance of amnesty they are still going to immigrate here and do their best to not get caught.
Yeah, and banks could avert bank robberies by just throwing their vaults open to the public, and letting anybody take whatever they want.
This is not a response to the argument made. You made a strawman argument.
White House's resident nativist, Steve Miller
You mean resident WH staffer who is reasonably well-spoken on the issue of immigration, right?
Ahh...the weekly Shikha screed. Talk about a one-trick pony.
I am making $85/hour telecommuting. I never imagined that it was honest to goodness yet my closest companion is acquiring $10 thousand a month by working on the web, that was truly shocking for me, she prescribed me to attempt it. simply give it a shot on the accompanying site.
+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ http://www.Jobpost3.tk
>It's a Shikha piece about immigration
Oh boy, here we go.
When you have a strong argument, you lay it out and do not need to say things like "Trump's claims are as patently absurd as his motives are clear."
I cannot speak my truth out loud. That's why the quote "vast majority of Americans support legalizing...." is just fake news or blindness like the election. I cannot speak my truth out loud.
"DACA cannot possibly be any kind of an attraction for anyone not already in the country because no one who entered after June 15, 2007 would be eligible for legalization under any scenario."
This is only true if you have such a low opinion of immigrants that you don't think they will draw the obvious conclusion: that a country that amnesties millions of illegals once is likely to do so again.
