They were just duplicating the NSA's work, anyway.
Hello.
I guess.
What's the point
Actually it was a volume issue. The recent Coates-West spat was the straw that broke the camel's back. The "oh hell no"s alone required enough new server purchases to break the LoC's capital budget for the next two years.
"Coates-West spat "
I neither know, nor care anything about either of these c-list nobodies.
And before you get salty, they're black. They don't matter.
Ugh. White people are the worst.
Who are you?
Who is anyone, really?
No but seriously, who are you?
Don't feed the trolls. Not that I need to tell you, O Crusty One, but still...
Why'd you run up here, Hail Rataxes?
Wait, you think I'm Hail Rataxes?
That's adorable.
Of course, I have no way to prove you are wrong and you have no way to prove you are right, so i guess this is where it stops. (I do have multiple handles, but all are references to Heinlein novels.)
You're fun though. Can you accuse Fist of being Old Mexican next? Or Tony of actually being John?
Is there a theory that Tony is a parody account? Is this a thing?
Tony is the antibodies to our good ideas on governance.
"Wait, you think I'm Hail Rataxes?
That's adorable"
Thanks for confirming it.
"Wait, you think I'm Hail Rataxes?"
I have 1k that agrees with me. Where are we escrowing?
"Of course, I have no way to prove you are wrong and you have no way to prove you are right"
Yeah, Hail Rataxes tried to hide behind that same excuse? weird.
The Justice Department has "systemic" problems in how it handles sexual harassment claims
Otherwise, bureaucratically ship shape.
I don't get this. HRA departments are OVERWHELMINGLY female. Have been for years.
And they STILL have this issue?
I'm starting to wonder if women are capable of actually doing jobs any longer. The years of them using sexuality to get ahead is now "problematic" because, for many of them, the one benefit they had --- sex appeal --- ends at a certain point.
Also, they all be shoppin'. Amiright?
HR departments exist to protect the company, not the employee.
I recently sat through a series of interviews with women. They all wore low cut blouses and in one case she was leaning forward and literally falling out.
Another woman at that office had managed to select a pair of pants that left less to the imagination than yoga pants. I had never observed such lifting and separating in the rear, and it was truly impressive.
I am of course a bad person for having noticed.
You are dead right about HR existing to protect the company's interest and not the employee's ever. It is often a rude awakening when someone learns that fact of life first hand.
"What an ass!"
"The Twitter Archive may prove to be one of this generation's most significant legacies to future generations," the library says.
Sweet zombie Jesus... the millenials really are in charge now.
That is a hell of a burn on this generation.
The family of a 25-year-old sex worker who was murdered by a client is now suing the hotel where she was murdered and the site where the woman posted ads for failing to have somehow prevented her death.
They just want closure(s).
"closure ($)"
Fixed.
And the ISP that routed the packets, the utility that provided the electricity, the construction company that built the hotel, ...
The smartest president who ever lived has assured us that the construction company didn't build that, all of society built that hotel. Therefore, we are all guilty of this murder.
Of course we are. As long as society continues to allow sex trafficking, we are all responsible. It takes a village globe, you know.
I now believe the only person not guilty of the murder is the "client".
She was cishetero white, so she shares some guilt.
"staffers have been told that if they find out about any affairs, romances, inappropriate relationships, or behavior in the office, they have to report it to human resources, their superior, or the company anti-harassment phone line" or face being disciplined themselves, an NBC "insider" is allegedly reporting."
And if you don't applaud the 'dear leader', do you go to a re-education camp?
Kreepyyyy.
I'm glad I work at a company staffed by adults.
You work in an all male environment? Must be nice.
I work in IT, so it's only mostly male.
Meh, being single I wouldn't have any problem with it. You take what you can get.
Hm... that was a thread fail.
Was it, though?
Yeah, I work in a female dominated office, and let me tell you, it's like having children who have no parents, and who you are barred from correcting run loose.
I'm glad I'm married with kids, and don't have to even consider the office "romance" crap. That is a live grenade I am happy to watch others foolishly tamper with and fall on.
I bet the only reason your company is still in business is the advantage of having labor costs at only 77% of real companies.
Wasn't the issue the superiors doing the stuff and the higher-ups not giving a shit?
Policies aren't going to change that.
...or face being disciplined themselves, an NBC "insider" is allegedly reporting.
A night in Matt Lauer's haunted sex dungeon.
It'd be more interesting as "disciplined themselves BY an NBC "insider."
The Department of Homeland Security is increasingly going global...
Budget locally, act globally.
Their new shoulder patch reads: "FUCK YEAH!"
How cosmopolitan, treating the globe as the homeland!
...following an announcement from the Democratic candidate that he plans to challenge the results.
Yes, Virginia, there is a recount clause.
So the Democratic candidate doesn't want every vote to count?
FAKE NEWS
The unsportsmanlike DemocRAT candidate is a woman.

Cato Institute scholars weigh in on the crisis pregnancy center case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Does California really think its citizens are too stupid to know that abortion exists?
Or are they just trying to push people to have more of them? It's really hard to see any other explanation.
Pelosi sees crisis pregnancy centers as contributing to welfare spending.
...so she's all for them? B/c I couldn't imagine her being opposed to more spending.

Not only is she not even close to being a libertarian, she's also an incompetent schmuckette. Can't get to work on time, can't get the links in on time, can't get the links correct... anyone who would hire this twat for anything should have their head examined.
Schmuckette.
You really need your own show.
what is this "getting to work on time" you speak of? Do you think most of the Reason staff actually shows up at an office every morning?
"Think" is not an applicable concept where Simple Mikey is concerned, ENB.
You are master of both time and space, or just space?
Go fuck yourself, Tulpa.
Fixed; thanks!

Yoon displayed several red flags that should have put hotel staff on alert that he was there to engage in "illegal commercial sex activity," the lawsuit said.
Oh FFS.
I've worked numerous hotels and if "our leaders" expect hotel workers to snitch on prostitution or else, every f'in hotel in the country will be out of business.
As for her, given that "trafficking" has almost no meaning any more, who knows if she actually was "trafficked".
In my fourteen years of hilariously commenting on the TreasonNN blogs I have never seen a staffer post links two days in a row.
What a terrible punishment! Poor ENB.

everyone's on vacation!
Thank you for being the one Reason staffer who cares.

Seriously though? 14 years?
One, I don't believe you and 2, were you really so ineffectual and unimportant that you were utterly drowned out by everyone who left?
Because you basically didn't exist before that. I know you stood out in no way whatsoever.
God how fucking sad for you. It took literally everyone else leaving for you to be noticed, and even then you're not worth bothering with.
You post comments in an attempt to be noticed?
People left?
I have news. There are no "people" behind these screen names. Just bots.
You misspelled tulpa
The plural is "Tulpae."
same 1k bet for you.
I'm not Tulpa. I have a thousand dollars that says so, where will you be escrowing?
I never said you were Tulpa, so that's a pretty nonsensical offer. Have fun, though!
I never said you did.
Narcist much?
"Narcist much"
I would deny this, but I don't know what that word "Narcist" is, so possibly?
AoWA if that was aimed at me, I was being sarcastic. Because everyone here is Tulpa. That's the most important lesson I've learned in my few years here at Reason: The Hindus got it wrong. It's Tulpae all the way down.
No, it was not aimed at you.
"You post comments in an attempt to be noticed? "
He doesn't?
He doesn't post links for people to click?
I kind of love when you clowns rush with gotchas and make fools of yourselves like that.
Because you basically didn't exist before that. I know you stood out in no way whatsoever.
God how fucking sad for you. It took literally everyone else leaving for you to be noticed, and even then you're not worth bothering with.
Lol. You fucking begged him to join you over there.
Fuck off, Tulpa. Go hang out with your friends.
I've got 1k that says I'm not Tulpa.
Let me know where to escrow and we can get started.
I also have another 1k that says I never registered, logged in, or attempted to join glibertarians.
Where are we escrowing.
Well, that ran you roght off.
Oh yeah, I'm scared. Of a bullshit bet threat, as if there would be some way to prove that you are the same person who's been socking here forever to make the puppets dance.
I guess you're still pretty butthurt at Crusty for not wanting to be besties.
"Oh yeah, I'm scared"
That's why you're still bloviating instead of escrowing.
Money bitch. Save the words.
Stop hiding behind logisitics bitch, we can work that out to YOUR satisfaction when you escrow.
You are just making excuses.
"as if there would be some way to prove that you are the same person who's been socking here forever to make the puppets dance."
AHAHAHAHA YOU FUCKING PUNK BITCH!!!
why are you hiding it now bitch?
You think I'm Tulpa. Put your money up, stop walking it back.
I'm gonna go get a sandwich. Can someone come get me when that punk bitch sneaks back in here to make another punk bitch excuse and then flee.
Thanks.
Question: How do you propose to determine who is who?
Unless you have a way to determine who has what accounts that is agreed upon by both parties then any talk of 'escrowing' is nothing more than posturing.
Seriously though? 14 years?
Seriously though, 14 long, hard, hilarious years.
Who are you?
You know who I am, dammit.
Never seen you before. Or maybe you aren't noteworthy.
Oh stop being so catty.
Gonna go with not noteworthy.
Awwww.
That's probably why.
In this thread we learned that I'm the only libertarian with any money.
Nah, we've merely confirmed that you're a humorless griefer with pretty bad autism. But draw whatever conclusions you need to in order to assuage the throbbings of your dysfunctional psyche.
I believe Shelly Simonds is still a cissy.
Beginning in 2018, the Library of Congress will stop archiving every Twitter post and only store tweets "on a very selective basis."
More anti-Trump bias. Very unfair!
Heh, that was my first thought.

I thought the preferred nomenclature was "au pair."

You know, I think what keeps me from being a libertarian is that it seems to require losing any understanding of the concept of a ward, a charge, and responsibility.
It does?
That's one of the more novel misunderstandings i've seen of what libertarianism is.
It's actually a pretty common theme here.
I don't think that's accurate.
I don't think

Heh.
He really is the gift that keeps on giving. He's the Stuart Smalley of the East. His empty suit gives Trudeau Junior's a run for its money.
I will genuinely miss DeBlasio and wish he could be mayor forever. The people who make a big deal about the fact that he is a Communist are all not from here.
.
You see, here everyone is a statist asshole of one variety or another. We have no shot at avoiding having the city run by one of them. DeBlasio's redeeming quality is that he is almost unimaginably (seriously, people are genuinely puzzled) weak, lazy, and stupid. His successor will not likely match his impotence (and therefore, relative harmlessness), and if he wants to, say, ban horses to deliver their stable to his real estate donors, he'll probably succeed. He also might get along with Cuomo, instead of having their childish feud impede many of each other's bad ideas.
.
We LOLed over here from the very start when outsiders proclaimed (in celebration or panic) DeBlasio's sandanismo to herald some militant new age of urban socialism. We knew better--that we were electing a dumb, lazy weakling--from square one. And did we ever. Just before his re-election DeBlasio gave an interview to New York magazine in which he announced that he was against private property and no one gave a shit. Lowest interest election, by a long shot, in at least 30 years and probably 60. You wouldn't even know we have politics in this town.
You make a convincing argument. The spats between him and Cuomo are particularly enjoyable. But my god he is so insufferable too.
Deblasio 2021!
Like all preteen boykind, when I was a horny little fellow I used to do a fair amount of fantasizing about fucking the lesbianism out of a chick; I thought that anyone who could turn one would have to be some sort of super stud. In retrospect, it's really ridiculous that I didn't imagine how much more likely it would be that such a thing would work due to having an almost unearthly lack of masculinity. (No kidding; I've actually met DeBlasio in person and it's ridiculous.)
.
Seriously, Chirlane is--at least metaphorically speaking--living every lesbian's literal dream. (And R. Kelly's.)

She insists that he call her Slim Shady during sex.
Better that than "Kim".
That's what she calls Crusty.
The insider added that there are also "strict rules about socializing, including [not] sharing taxis home and [not] taking vegans to steakhouses."
"Oh, and about [not] using the s-word when talking with vegans."
[not] taking vegans to steakhouses.
I think in this day and age even steakhouses offer rabbit food for those types.
And blindfolds and respirators?
The vast majority of humans are omnivores - it's on vegans to always carry any necessary crutches with them just in case.
The respirators would be a change (if not exactly unexpected these days). But I'm pretty sure there's always been something at steakhouses for the party member who doesn't eat steak. Fish, usually. And they do have salads, after all, and I'm sure it wouldn't ever be too hard to whip up something cooked if you asked for it. (None except Denny's or something unimaginably pretentious would not have things off the menu that customers could order.) A slight expansion in explicitly vegetarian options in general would likely date back to the 70s anyway.
.
There are probably a few places that would ostentatiously refuse, on principle, to accommodate vegetarians in even a trivial way if asked. "We serve real food here, not the food the food eats," etc. That strikes me as a bit lame and reverse-pretentious, like one of those places where they cut off your tie if you come in wearing one.
Another issue: Twitter only gives the library the text of tweets ? not images, videos, or linked content. "Tweets now are often more visual than textual, limiting the value of text-only collecting," the library says.
There ought to be a law!
OT: during the family Christmas gathering one of my in-laws started complaining about national politics. I said "excuse me" then ran out of the room. The hint was not taken.
That you are gay? It's sad, but sometimes even in this day and age acceptance can be hard for some families. But often a little time, patience, and love can work miracles.
I knew I could count on the Reason commentariat for support. Thank you!

Family of Murdered Sex Worker Sues Hotel and Backpage:
Yoon displayed several red flags that should have put hotel staff on alert that he was there to engage in "illegal commercial sex activity," the lawsuit said. He paid in cash, checked in late at night with an out-of-state ID, carried no luggage and provided personal information that conflicted with what the hotel had on file for the person whose hotel benefits program number was stolen.
So, we should be stomping down on out of state travelers who pay in cash and check in late at night? What about people who decide not to bring their luggage in because it's late and they're tired AF?
Looks like my style of travel is a big no-no in the near future.
But seriously, how in the hell is the hotel or BackPage supposed to be be liable for this woman's choice to engage in what is probably the most dangerous female-dominated profession?
Yoon displayed several red flags that should have put hotel staff on alert that he was there to engage in "illegal commercial sex activity,"
Is the family upset about the sex activity or the murder? I'm confused.
A 25 year old woman engaged in prostitution [I've always deplored the euphemism "sex work;" strait outa vag monologues] and ends up dead. Somebody should have DONE SOMETHING!, and the apparent fact that they didn't is sufficient condemnation for anyone on the line of proximate causation.
Interesting, I've always preferred the term "sex work". Prostitution has (for whatever reason) negative connotations. Sex Work sounds like "just business" which is what it is. Sex for money = Sex Work.
The line of reasoning seems to be: Someone should have noticed and stopped her.
Here's a thought guys: You're her family. You should have noticed. You should have stopped her. This woman's death is not the fault of the hotel. It's not the fault of the website she advertised on. It's not the fault of the state. No, the responsibility and fault lies with those who were close to her. Who should have known. Who should have been watching but did not or turned a blind eye. To the parents who raised her poorly and fed her to the wolves.
If factory workers can be told to go back to school and learn to code, so can hookers.
Without getting deep into that, they certainly should be able to find some work. It absolutely will not make the same amount of money per hour. Not even close.
If you don't want your daughter to be a hooker--and I do NOT want that for my daughter--then be an involved parent, and intervene when things go wrong. Look out for them. Be a family. Teach her to not put herself in the situation where she is so desperate as to turn to that.
It's a difficult task, but it is our burden as parents.
If they had any integrity they'd sue the State of Oregon for making their daughter's freely chosen line of work unnecessarily dangerous with their stupid 1950s-leftover moral hygiene laws.
That just makes too much sense. Better we as a village feel better about condemning self exploitation than to accept it in any shape form or fashion.
I'm kind of wondering why using an out of state ID, of all things, is supposed to be a red flag for being up to no good in a fucking hotel. Shouldn't it be more suspicious if his ID says he lives three neighborhoods over? Am I taking crazy pills here?
It's only dangerous because of the law against it. They should be suing the state and its police.
The Justice Department has "systemic" problems in how it handles sexual harassment claims, according to the DOJ inspector general.
So were all these alleged crimes committed this year by people hired this year, or will reporters criticize Obama's management of the Justice Department? On the plus side, law enforcement agents might suddenly believe in due process now that #MeToo affects them too.
Oh sure, now that Trump is president, stop archiving tweets.
Having done archival work before, I can only imagine the hell of trying to categorize all the stream of consciousness and typo-strewn tweets out there, especially now that their allowed length has been doubled (and that photos, links, and mentions have previously been subtracted from character counts). I wouldn't want to be the guy at the LoC wondering why I got buried in debt for an MLIS degree to be the one responsible for counting poop emoji...

Virginia is holding off on plans to decide the winner of a tied House of Delegates race by drawing a name, following an announcement from the Democratic candidate that he plans to challenge the results.
Usually we just recount until the democrat wins bc more votes were found or something. Jokes aside, this does concern me a bit given the anti-gun stance of the newly elected governor and most dems.
Beginning in 2018, the Library of Congress will stop archiving every Twitter post and only store tweets "on a very selective basis."
Then how are we to have future scholarly research about the Trump admin.?
On the bright side, his Presidential library will fit on a thumb drive.
I wish all the contemporary presidents had their garbage legacies fit under my thumb.
So-called crisis pregnancy centers do not "help" their clients make choices at all, unless by "help" you mean coerce them and give them a runaround to prevent them getting the help they need. CPCs are fraud schemes, and the law mandating they give that information to their clients is perfectly right. CPCs' business model NEEDS to be destroyed.
...and so do all those unwanted children. Every Child A Wanted Child!
"Cato Institute scholars weigh in on the crisis pregnancy center case before the U.S. Supreme Court."

It's like requiring AA to tell their clients that "our state has many ABC stores offering a wide variety of high-end alcoholic beverages."
Part of the Republican tax overhaul that President Trump signed into law last week has homeowners around the country doing something unusual: rushing to pay their 2018 property taxes well before the due date.

I wonder if the left will call the tax reform "Republican" when it helps bring the USA out the Great Recession once and for all?
The left tends to call things Republican or conservative if they are deemed bad by the left.
