      Hello.

      IS EARF STILL ALIVE?!

      HOW?!?!

      TRUMP KILLED IT!

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Trump was elected to support the Pittsburgh Penguins not the Paris Predators.

I knew I liked this president!

        2. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Ew. NOBODY supports the Pittsburgh Penguins.

You'd think he could afford a current jersey with Pittsburgh Gold instead of the retired Vegas Gold (AKA beige).

The California Senate voted in favor of a measure to approve a "nonbinary" option, in addition to male and female, on state identification cards and documents.

What if you self-identify as someone who doesn't want to participate in any state identification system?

Covfefe. noun. A statement that is trivial or unintentional, but nevertheless becomes a major topic of supposedly serious (inter)national discussion for a short period of time before being forgotten completely.

Twelve-year-old Ananya Vinay of California is the winner of the 90th annual national spelling bee, securing the championship by correctly spelling "marocain"?a dress fabric made from silk or rayon.

Moroccan is who I am, not a spelling bee word, and this is not okay.

    1. Ska   8 years ago

I think we need some sort of separate spelling bee for non-south-Asians. Or some kind of spelling be affirmative action program - just for fun. I mean equality.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Some day the winners of the spelling bees will realize that being able to spell nearly every word in the dictionary does not really open doors for you.

But hey, at least some kids in the USA are trying to be smart.

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

At that age, I always aimed for "well-rounded" over "creepy weirdo obsessive" like the spelling kids or the chess nerds. Didn't earn me any trophies though.

          1. Zeb   8 years ago

At least being obsessed with being really good at chess is really interesting and something you can keep doing. Once you've won the spelling bee, there's really nowhere to go from there and after a few weeks of glory, no one gives a shit anymore.

          2. CE   8 years ago

I won trophies for spelling and chess, and I turned out okay.

Fox news host Kimberly Guilfoyle - once tipped to be taking Spicer's job - reveals Trump called her for her opinion on Paris Accord before announcing his decision

They had also discussed taxes, and The Five, which she said Trump was big fan of and 'says hello to all of you', she said to her colleagues.

Reminder: Roger Ailes reportedly said she would get on her knees for anyone, and also reportedly called her a Puerto Rican whore.

I ask you, fellow commenters, who did this Puerto Rican whore get on her knees for in the Trump administration?

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Lindsey Graham, but he ran away screaming.

      1. Libertarian   8 years ago

Thank god I was done with my coffee when I read that.

    2. Conchfritters   8 years ago

I for one welcome this Puerto Rican whore. Big improvement from W Bush administration, which had a close relationship with male escort fake news journalist Jeff Gannon (not that there's anything wrong with that), and the HW Bush admin before that and their obsession with little boys.

    3. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

My guess: Kushner, because that fella has it going on.

    4. chemjeff   8 years ago

So Trump calls TV airhead bimbo for advice on major matters of state? Well, if this is "fake news", it's awfully believable fake news.

      1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

Ehh, not necessarily. It could have been pleasantries. "I'm making an announcement on this Paris Agreement thing, what are your thoughts on that?"

Twitter "intensifies and amplifies pathological social tendencies among those who act within, report on, and write about the political world," writes Damon Linker at The Week.

It's also a powerful democratizing force within culture and politics when any schmo can get directly into an argument with, say, the President of the United States. Or Kanye West, or whoever.

Mike Judge Isn't Here to Push Your Agenda

This idea that (some!) leftists hold?that only obviously, pedantically leftwing satire is of value?never ceases to amuse me. As if the only humor of worth is that which defends your worldview?that which never makes you question whether or not your preferred priorities are obviously correct

    1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

      That boy ain't right.

    2. Zeb   8 years ago

And that's why he's awesome. Silicon Valley is great because it tries to satirize the way things actually are, not to make statements about how things ought to be.
It's really lame how much contemporary comedy is entirely based on the premise that your political opponents are all stupid.

    3. Glide   8 years ago

I have never consumed any of Judge's output so I'm unqualified to comment on him, but that was a very well-written article as far as speaking to the other side of the coin that demands all comedy come with political wokeness.

      1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I have never consumed any of Judge's output

How is that possible. Beavis and Butthead? King of the Hill??

          Office Space! Idiocracy!

As if the only humor of worth is that which defends your worldview?that which never makes you question whether or not your preferred priorities are obviously correct

And that's why people like the Daily Show claque, or hacks like Andy Borowitz or John Fugelsang, are inherently bad comedians--their barbs only go in one direction. It's not so much a lack of cleverness as it is intellectual laziness and emotional infantilism.

One thing I'll give to Bill Maher, as slimy as he can be, is that he'll occasionally hold up a mirror to the left's presumptions. His observation post-election that Trump may not be as stupid as people believe if he ended up beating establishment Republican and Democrat candidates, is one of the rare moments of self-awareness the left has shown in the last few months.

Lena Dunham endorses from bed in New Jersey governor race

"I developed a real fondness and affinity for New Jersey and I think it's real important to support every state in America, but especially the ones that are your neighbors," she said.

Thank you for being so brave.

    1. Rhywun   8 years ago

Oh great, it's time for the office to go hard left again. Cue me looking back fondly on Christie.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

New Jersey Democrat Chris Christie ruins everything he touches, except for Barack Obama's re-election.

    2. Rufus The Monocled   8 years ago

Does she pull the chord from her stomach herself followed by a giggle?

It's the New Jersey Lena doll!

I mean, sugar is delicious, so I am going to keep eating a lot of it, but wowzers.

The bill would also let minors apply for a gender change on their birth certificates with permission from a parent or guardian.

Can a minor apply to be recognized as an adult for other purposes?

    1. Zeb   8 years ago

Sometimes an older minor can be "emancipated" from their parents so they can live independently regardless of the parents' wishes. Then there is the whole "charged as an adult" thing.

Maybe they should just change the gender/sex thing on birth certificates to "has a penis" or "has no penis". And maybe an intersex option for those very rare cases. I'd be OK with just eliminating sex/gender as a legal category altogether. Anywhere it's actually relevant it can be replaced by things like the ability to bear children, or other specific physiological attributes. But that probably interferes too much with the gender politics game.

      1. Rhywun   8 years ago

You make a good point. Why is it at all necessary for ID purposes? Get rid of it. The howling will die down eventually.

      Oh, and killing babies.

Sugar baby says she's 'addicted' to having sex for vacations

Heidy Pandora, 24, who is currently unemployed and describes herself as a "full-time traveler," has visited more than 20 countries during her three years on dating site Miss Travel.

"I don't see it as such a big deal to have sex with married men. If they're married and looking somewhere else, they're not happy. Some of them don't have any sexual relationship with their wives anymore."

Don't worry everyone, I already forwarded her information to the authorities; this homewrecking whore is going to prison.

    1. Anomalous   8 years ago

Heidy Pandora? Yeah, that's her real name.

From Young Voices managing editor and former Reason intern Liz Wolfe, a fun look at drama within the "influencer marketing" and #VanLife worlds.

And that's not even the thrust of the article, which is that most consumers of media want media that makes them feel good about themselves more than they want media that tells the truth, and most producers of media are more than happy to oblige because it makes them feel good too. Bring back Liz Wolfe, Reason! She can have Shikha's job.

    1. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

most consumers of media want media that makes them feel good about themselves more than they want media that tells the truth, and most producers of media are more than happy to oblige because it makes them feel good too.

Yes, which kind of dovetails with my Mike Judge link above, where some complain that Mike Judge is not presenting social issues in a way that benefits a political movement. Their preconceived biases can never be challenged.

    2. Zeb   8 years ago

Yeah, she's pretty good. I read some of her other stuff there.

  18. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

This pattern plays out again and again, yet many left-leaning outlets who fail to run accurate, well-researched stories retain their high readership. The people who share these insidious false stories still consider themselves great foot soldiers in the fight against fake news and still parade their moral superiority. They, unlike all others, are paragons of intellect and judgement.

I use the left as an example not because the right is flawless, but because I think it's generally easier to spot the bad news outlets and obviously-fake content on the right. The issue is that many outlets on the left are masquerading as reputable, and much harder for an average educated person to see through.

Good article, however the writer refuses to acknowledge that children are being molested in the basements of DC pizza parlors, and Seth Rich was murdered by Hillary Clinton.

    1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I looked at my phone's "News" app for the first time this morning and the 4 highlighted stories were Trump and/or climate nonsense from: NYT, WaPo, USA Today, and Vox ("Fox News Admits Climate Change Is Real!"). I didn't read any of them, although I would probably read USA Today before any of the others. But it got me thinking that yes, these are the default sources that America "trusts".

      1. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

The only way to save the planet is through the Paris Agreement, and Trump is putting the world's safety at risk!

        1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

All for a pointless political exercise, because the Paris Agreement doesn't really do anything. He's disgusting!

      2. CE   8 years ago

The New York Times is still mostly pretty good (though obviously liberal), and USA Today isn't too pushy about their ideology.
The Washington Post is the worst paper I've seen for fake news and belligerent leftism.
I've never read Vox and would advise others not to as well.

Back to the Future fan ticketed for going 88 mph in DeLorean

On Friday evening, Spencer L. White of Santa Clarita, California, was ticketed for speeding ? and clocked at exactly 88 mph ? while taking his mom for a spin in his own vintage DeLorean. The longtime Back to the Future aficionado had purchased the car about a month before.

    1. Anomalous   8 years ago

      Great Scot!

My favorite line in that movie is when the professor apologized "for the crudity" of his model of the town.

        1. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

John Mulaney on how that movie is so weird.

          1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Speaking of weird. John Mulaney who looks about 30 tops, is trying to joke about 1985's Back to the Future as if he saw for the first time then and then "rewatched it".

His observations about the movie were kinda funny but its hard to get past people who want to relate to you about being old but are clearly young and did not have shared experiences. Kind of like really old people who probably grew up without a home phone trying to act like they can relate to kids who use cell phones for everything.

            1. Crusty Juggler - lamertarian   8 years ago

You should have just written, "I have a terrible sense of humor."

Come on, loveconstitution1789 is a comedy mastermind. He keeps talking about how Donald Trump is draining the swamp, and that's hilarious.

              You sound old.

            3. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

You should also know that when a comedian says they ran into someone the other day, or something happened that morning, it didn't actually happen. They're (cynically!) setting up a routine they've written and practiced a hundred times.

I like how the California government doesn't recognize the fact that the drivers license field was never asking what societal construct you identify as being a member of, but rather what your fucking chromosomes say.

That's because if, say, your penis got cut off in a car wreck they could figure out you were male and might want to locate the extra parts, or not give you an emergency drug or surgical procedure that could fuck you up based on sex/age qualifications.

I can't wait for the first news story where some xer dies because the doctors and paramedics had absolutely on idea what the person on the stretcher was and accidentally cut into a womb instead of the intestines (or whathaveyou). Who will they blame? Certainly not the madness of their legislature or the individual, but rather the doctor for not doing a genetic test on their E.R. patient.

      1. dschwar   8 years ago

The EMTs/doctors will just conduct an examination of the pelvic bones to figure out how the rest of the anatomy is constructed. At least, that's what they do on all the CSI shows.

Of course, if the car crash manages to shatter your pelvis, that could make things a bit more difficult.

"The bill passed the Senate, where Democrats hold a 27-13 majority, though did not say how the estimated $400 billion cost in providing comprehensive health care to every resident would be paid for."

Wow. This is going to be entertaining. I just hope it collapses before my state follows them down the drain.

though did not say how the estimated $400 billion cost in providing comprehensive health care to every resident would be paid for

Oh, this is going to be good...a textbook case of magical thinking in legislative form. If it passes, I give it about five-seven years before it collapses and the state's welfare class revolts because their gimmes get taken away.

And no sacrifice is too great for Gaia:

"The city of Berkeley, California, may soon ban straws in an attempt to help the planet."

I'll bet the planet would be helped a whole lot more if the residents of Berkeley all died in a fire.

Fires release a lot of carbon dioxide. Now, if they were all buried in a landslide...

There is a guy who writes for the NY Times (I forget his name) who has written some good pieces questioning the benefits of recycling. One interesting observation he made is that putting plastic stuff in landfills is actually a pretty effective carbon sequestration.

      1. Rhywun   8 years ago

I knew recycling was bullsh!t when one of Bloomberg's first acts as mayor of NYC was to admit that some recycling was a waste of money, and ending that part of the program. The progs of course went apeshit so he soon recanted and reinstated the full thing.

        1. Zeb   8 years ago

Recycling really is a religion to some people. Even with well reasoned articles in the goddamn NY Times about how recycling is a waste in many cases, people still cling to the idea that we must recycle or be buried in garbage (or whatever their favorite reason is).

So... pursuing the same policies that produced these results, only harder, is going to solve everything. Man, he's a shoo-in for guv.

Yep, and our SF Mayor is so concerned about the bums, he's proposing to spend another $150M to help (attract a whole lot more of them)!

Twitter for me is partly a 21st-century teletype machine providing the latest breaking news in real time 24 hours a day; partly an endless, gossipy cocktail party with my peers in the media; and partly an incomparable means of promoting my work and interacting with readers and critics.

Aha! Always all about the cocktail parties with you media people!!!1!

It turns politicians, political staffers, reporters, editors, pundits, and analysts into petty, vain, childish, showoffy, hostile, vindictive, dogmatic, impulsive, careless versions of their best and most professional selves.

I think it has this effect on everyone. People are so much more combative online than they are in real life.

The purpose of ID cards and driver licenses is to be able to verify that a person is who he says he is. "Gender identity" is subjective and not subject to verification, especially ambiguous genders (genderqueer, asexual)--normal ID cards don't say anything about a person's sexual preference. There are no "gay" ID cards. Yet that is what this category does.
