The national media and the #BLM crowd has been so consistent in choosing the wrong cases to champion that it leads one to suspect that they are actually trying to create division and enmity rather than highlighting injustice. So their top mantras are “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Skittles and iced tea” – two cases that are murky at best, and probably don’t illustrate any systematic abuse or racism.

Meanwhile, cases like Guerreno, Nehad and Thomas got little national attention, and even Tamir Rice got much less attention than “hands up, don’t shoot’. These were all clear and simple cases of police being reckless with other people’s lives or even callously murdering innocent people – all defended by their departments as following procedures and acting properly. They are much better representatives of the need for reform.

Meanwhile, A police officer was recently convicted in the murder of a 6 year old autistic boy in Louisiana in an action that was initially called self-defense. Ever heard of it? No. Because there’s no racism angle. And no controversy to be stirred up.

So Trump (maybe accidentally) gave a nod to the notion that police are being vilified for the wrong things. Michael Brown certainly isn’t the right guy to use as your poster boy for “racist cops are running around killing unarmed black people for no reason”.

This smells like one of those things that if you dug deep into the story, the public assistance cards may have been poor measures of voter eligibility hence their exclusion.

But I do understand the concern as only black people are on public assistance.

This case presented all sorts of crazy procedural issues that made it a bad candidate for deciding the underlying Voting Rights Act questions. Well, they are poor measures of eligibility, but eligibility (theoretically) is supposed to be checked in the registration process.

More importantly, they’re inferior verifications of identity — because they don’t have photos on them. You walk into a polling station with an EBT card, how do they know that the card is yours? I mean, it does mean you jumped a higher hurdle than just declaring your identity — if you’re a phony, you needed to steal or fake a card with the voter’s name — but it’s not as hard as getting a passable fake driver’s license with the right name and a passable picture of you on it.

But really, the state shouldn’t bother declaring what forms of ID are specifically valid. Simply set the standard, explicitly, to “identification valid under Federal law to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer and/or board a commercial airline flight”. if the Federal Government is not unduly burdening the established rights to bear arms or to travel with such requirements, then how can the state be unduly burdening the right to vote with an explicitly identical requirement?

Citation needed. I know it’s accepted as conventional wisdom among feminists, but it seems to me that the only real difference is in how people respond. Male public figures are routinely mocked for being old, fat, bald, short, having bad hair, being unkempt, etc. The difference is, when you mock a woman’s appearance there’s an armada of feminists who flip their collective shit, while when you mock a man’s appearance, no one really cares.

It’s one of those ‘phenomena’ (like women supposedly being interrupted more by men than vice versa) that has worked its way into the catalog of accepted truths, but no one has ever actually demonstrated to be true.
