The United States government believes that Syria has a large crematorium to conceal mass atrocities. The State Department is calling on Russia to do something about it.

  • President Donald Trump's call for a ban on Muslim immigrants on the campaign trail came back to haunt the administration yet again today in a federal appeals court hearing in Seattle on his executive order barring travel from several countries.
  • The Supreme Court declined to hear a North Carolina voter ID law case, which effectively kills the law. A lower court had determined that it deliberately discriminated against black voters and poor minorities by allowing use of some government-issued identification methods (driver's licenses) but not others (public assistance cards).
  • President Trump will have the White House lit up in blue tonight in honor of police officers killed in action last year. He also complained that police are subject to "unfair defamation and vilification."
  • Meanwhile, an unarmed, erratically behaving man died in Las Vegas after being Tasered, punched several times, and put in a "neck restraint" hold by police there.
  • I was on vacation last week and wasn't around to blog the Kentucky T-shirt shop that won a court case after refusing to print shirts with pro-gay messages. Read more about the case here and why it's legally distinct from wedding cake cases (mind you, whether it should be distinct is a whole different question). The Supreme Court is still considering whether to take on a case over whether it's legal for a baker to refuse to make cakes for same-sex weddings. They punted again this morning on making a decision.
  • Speaking of which, support for legal gay marriage recognition among Americans has reached a new high—64 percent, according to a new Gallup poll.
  • BREAKING! Sources told the Washington Post that President Trump revealed classified intel about the fight against the Islamic State to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador who visited him at the White House last week.

Speaking of which, support for legal gay marriage recognition among Americans has reached a new high?64 percent…

“Recognition” is why Shackleford is my favorite.

    1. Rhywun   8 years ago

You just want to stay on his good side. The alternative… *shudder*

      1. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

I’ve been consistent on this phrasing, as has Shlackford.

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

All I know is I’ve seen his wrath descend on at least one commenter, and it was pretty epic.

President Trump will have the White House lit up in blue tonight in honor of police officers killed in action last year. He also complained that police are subject to “unfair defamation and vilification.”

What fucking defamation? These people can kill cripples in the street and still get awarded medals.

    1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

If you can’t stand the time don’t be a cripple and do the crime. And by crime, I mean assert your civil rights to police.

      1. RussianPrimeMinister   8 years ago

The quote is “if you can’t do the time, die.”

        Or something like that.

        1. Cyto   8 years ago

Except he specifically mentioned “unfair” defamation and vilification. Of which there has been plenty.

The national media and the #BLM crowd has been so consistent in choosing the wrong cases to champion that it leads one to suspect that they are actually trying to create division and enmity rather than highlighting injustice. So their top mantras are “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Skittles and iced tea” – two cases that are murky at best, and probably don’t illustrate any systematic abuse or racism.

Meanwhile, cases like Guerreno, Nehad and Thomas got little national attention, and even Tamir Rice got much less attention than “hands up, don’t shoot’. These were all clear and simple cases of police being reckless with other people’s lives or even callously murdering innocent people – all defended by their departments as following procedures and acting properly. They are much better representatives of the need for reform.

Meanwhile, A police officer was recently convicted in the murder of a 6 year old autistic boy in Louisiana in an action that was initially called self-defense. Ever heard of it? No. Because there’s no racism angle. And no controversy to be stirred up.

So Trump (maybe accidentally) gave a nod to the notion that police are being vilified for the wrong things. Michael Brown certainly isn’t the right guy to use as your poster boy for “racist cops are running around killing unarmed black people for no reason”.

  8. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

A lower court had determined that it deliberately discriminated against black voters and poor minorities by allowing use of some government-issued identification methods (driver’s licenses) but not others (public assistance cards).

While a highly racist assumption on the part of the opponents of the law, I can see that as an unnecessary problem from lawmakers.

    1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

I think it’s interesting that the appeals court considered a SNAP card to be a valid form of identification, considering the fraud that occurs within that program.

      1. rudehost   8 years ago

I will patiently await their ruling that says a snap card or library card is adequate for boarding a plane or purchasing a firearm. Not entirely clear if it is wise to hold me breath waiting for this ruling.

        1. Michael Ejercito   8 years ago

that would imply that the court has no principles.

The Supreme Court declined to hear a North Carolina voter ID law case, which effectively kills the law. A lower court had determined that it deliberately discriminated against black voters and poor minorities by allowing use of some government-issued identification methods (driver’s licenses) but not others (public assistance cards).

This smells like one of those things that if you dug deep into the story, the public assistance cards may have been poor measures of voter eligibility hence their exclusion.

But I do understand the concern as only black people are on public assistance.

    1. UVaGrad   8 years ago

It’s worth noting that the Supreme Court will very, very likely be hearing a similar case out of Texas once it winds its way up there. This case presented all sorts of crazy procedural issues that made it a bad candidate for deciding the underlying Voting Rights Act questions. The Texas one doesn’t have those same procedural problems.

    2. Rhywun   8 years ago

the public assistance cards may have been poor measures of voter eligibility hence their exclusion

So is a driver’s license. Unless they started checking for citizenship?

Fun fact: I was once denied a passport because I didn’t have a drivers license in addition to my birth certificate, despite the fact that the state’s non-driver ID requires the exact same proof of identity as the drivers license. But try arguing “facts” with a Fed.

      1. Juice   8 years ago

Wait, only drivers are allowed to exit the country? Interesting.

        1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Driver’s licenses have not been used solely for driving since they were just paper and no picture.

      2. BYODB   8 years ago

Wow, seriously? That’s insane, since the ID is intended to be the exact same type of identification. Can’t say I’m surprised though. Never throw a bureaucrat a curve ball.

    3. DRM   8 years ago

Well, they are poor measures of eligibility, but eligibility (theoretically) is supposed to be checked in the registration process.

More importantly, they’re inferior verifications of identity — because they don’t have photos on them. You walk into a polling station with an EBT card, how do they know that the card is yours? I mean, it does mean you jumped a higher hurdle than just declaring your identity — if you’re a phony, you needed to steal or fake a card with the voter’s name — but it’s not as hard as getting a passable fake driver’s license with the right name and a passable picture of you on it.

But really, the state shouldn’t bother declaring what forms of ID are specifically valid. Simply set the standard, explicitly, to “identification valid under Federal law to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer and/or board a commercial airline flight”. if the Federal Government is not unduly burdening the established rights to bear arms or to travel with such requirements, then how can the state be unduly burdening the right to vote with an explicitly identical requirement?

      1. Chip Your Pets   8 years ago

They’ll just say that denying the right to vote is strict scrutiny while denying RKBA is intermediate scrutiny, or whatever bullshit non-constitutional explanation they feel like using today.

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem blasts Ivanka Trump for not ‘standing up’ for women, as she compares the self-proclaimed feminist’s maternity care program to NAZI policy

‘She hasn’t co-opted feminism. Nobody on earth thinks she’s a feminist, are you kidding me?’ said the activist, who was speaking as part of conference for Create & Cultivate NYC.

A feminist, she told Refinery29, is someone ‘who believes in the full equality of the sexes’.

She explained that despite Ivanka’s claim that she is feminist, her actions and public statements don’t actually line up with feminist dogma.

‘I have not seen her standing up and saying women should have a right to control their own bodies and decide when and whether to have children,’ she said.

Speaking of the policy that Ivanka was promoting, Steinem went so far as to compare it to a policy of Nazi Germany.

‘That happens to be the same policy as every authoritarian regime on Earth that I know of, including Hitler’s Germany. I’m not saying that she knows this, but [the Nazis] were paying women to have children. By accident, perhaps, that’s her policy.’

    4. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

A feminist, she told Refinery29, is someone ‘who believes in the full equality of the sexes’

“Unless a woman commits violence against a man, then he has to sit there and take it. And even though we don’t need no man to raise our children, don’t you dare miss a single child support or alimony payment or your life will be ruined.”

    5. MarkLastname   8 years ago

‘Get inspired by how I give ZERO f***s!’ McKayla Maroney proudly takes credit for posting a racy video that sees her dancing in a THONG after fans thought the Instagram footage was hacked

Conan O’Brien Headed to Trial Over Claims of Stealing Jokes

On Friday, a federal judge ruled that while jokes based on current events are only entitled to “thin” copyright protection, Conan O’Brien must nevertheless face allegations of lifting three jokes for the monologue of his TBS late-night show. As a result, O’Brien and Time Warner appear headed to something that almost never occurs in the humor business ? a trial that would test whether Conan writers took material about Caitlyn Jenner, Tom Brady and the Washington Monument from a freelancer’s social media feed and blog.

On June 9, 2015, Kaseberg posted on his blog, “Three towns, two in Texas, one in Tennessee, have streets named after Bruce Jenner and now they have to consider changing them to Caitlyn. And one will have to change from a Cul-De-Sac to a Cul-De-Sackless.”

Later that day, a Conan writer submitted a joke which O’Brien later performed, stating, “Some cities that have streets named after Bruce Jenner are trying to change the streets’ names to Caitlyn Jenner. If you live on Bruce Jenner Cul-de-sac it will now be Cul-de-no-sack.”

Slate even ran an article titled “Here’s Everything Samantha Bee Has Called Donald Trump on Full Frontal” ? a list that included such names as “Big hairy orange villain” and “Melting hunk of uninformed apricot Jell-O.” But when TBS, the network that runs Full Frontal, tweeted a video comparing Clinton’s laugh to that of a hyena, Bee tweeted back “Delete your account.”

I wasn’t expecting Lena Dunham to be more aware and appear more emotionally stable than Samantha Bee, but I’m glad there’s at least one prominent woman pointing out the hypocrisy. I’m kinda proud of her. Not too many more articles like this, Crusty, I don’t want to turn into a fan :-/

“And while appearance-based attacks are generally aimed at women…”
Citation needed. I know it’s accepted as conventional wisdom among feminists, but it seems to me that the only real difference is in how people respond. Male public figures are routinely mocked for being old, fat, bald, short, having bad hair, being unkempt, etc. The difference is, when you mock a woman’s appearance there’s an armada of feminists who flip their collective shit, while when you mock a man’s appearance, no one really cares.

It’s one of those ‘phenomena’ (like women supposedly being interrupted more by men than vice versa) that has worked its way into the catalog of accepted truths, but no one has ever actually demonstrated to be true.

BREAKING! Sources told the Washington Post that President Trump revealed classified intel about the fight against the Islamic State to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador who visited him at the White House last week.

Oh, c’mon, man! If the foreign minister and ambassador don’t have top-level security clearances, who does? I can’t imagine what Trump might have been telling them that they didn’t already know and didn’t have the background checks to be trusted to know – these are some pretty high-ranking government officials, aren’t they?

  24. Crusty Juggler aka "Chad"   8 years ago

BREAKING! Sources told the Washington Post that President Trump revealed classified intel about the fight against the Islamic State to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador who visited him at the White House last week.

“This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”

“It is all kind of shocking,” said a former senior U.S. official who is close to current administration officials. “Trump seems to be very reckless and doesn’t grasp the gravity of the things he’s dealing with, especially when it comes to intelligence and national security. And it’s all clouded because of this problem he has with Russia.”

    1. Crusty Juggler aka "Chad"   8 years ago

You know, it seems like this would be a ripe situation for a no-kidding whistleblower to openly go on the record about actual violations of federal law and executive order regarding classified information spillage, rather than passive-aggressive leaks to the gossip-mongering press whores.

But, at this point, what difference does it make? These “officials” were perfectly willing to let Hillary skate on her own violations over a tortured explanation of mens rea that clearly didn’t apply either in action or in the letter of the law. Getting huffy over Trump spilling classified beans to the Russkies is little more than selective outrage. If they want to show they’re serious about this shit, lock them both up.

      1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

The best part about this little incident will be watching leftists suddenly act like they give a shit about the government protecting state secrets, same as it’s been amusing watching them come to the defense of the surveillance state and its mandarins in the last year.

        1. Stormy Dragon   8 years ago

he best part about this little incident will be…

No, it’s going to be the Trumptards rationalizing why this is not big deal in a way that reveals how the whole e-mail thing from last year was purely a tactical position for the election and not because they actually cared about Clinton’s mishandling of sensitive data.

          1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

Yeah, it couldn’t possibly be that the whole rule of law in Clinton’s case was undermined for political purposes, rendering its enforcement a moot point.

A co-worker says Hillary’s email server was not in the same league as anything Trump has done, that it was never hacked, that all the alleged classified emails are just alternative facts. This last little bit came out in a huff as he got tired of being, ahem, trumped. “You are not entitled to alternate facts!”

One way to signal end of argument.

Except the three people who were actually there, the national security advisor, his deputy, and the secy of state, have all denied the Washington Post reports, which are based solely on secondhand anonymous sources, some of whom could not possibly have been there (former officials).

  25. Ron   8 years ago

Other Articles have stated that the “classified” info Trump shared with Russia was about ISIS. A group both nations are having problems with.

Side note the President is the last arbiter of what is and isn’t classified.

If the info did reveal people that it shouldn’t then that is a problem and typical stupid but it wasn’t a problem to the left when Obama revealed the people that helped us find Osama Ben laden

    1. Bearded Spock   8 years ago

Not to mention that we share classified info with our allies — and even our not-so-allies — ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME.

I have no doubt that Obama gave China classified info on North Korea’s missile program. Bush shared classified info on Iraq with our good friends the Saudis, the people who run that bastion of liberal, tolerant, pro-American democracy.

Hell, during World War II we gave intel to the Soviets in addition to millions of tons of supplies, weapons, and food.

What this latest “scandal” boils down to is that Trump gave out info that some McMullin fanboi at the CIA didn’t think was kosher and so he leaked it to the Media and the WaPo, ever eager to start a Trumpest in a Teacup, took the bait.

      1. Marty Feldman's Eyes   8 years ago

Not to mention that we share classified info with our allies — and even our not-so-allies — ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME.

But that decision is usually made by people who, let’s hope, know what we should and shouldn’t tell who. Lets face it- is there *anyone* that thinks Trump is competent to make that call?

        1. DRM   8 years ago

Well, anyone who voted for him to be President declared him to be competent to make the call. So, well, tens of millions of people?

    2. RussianPrimeMinister   8 years ago

NPR just stated that the information was from one of our allies in that region, and that sharing this information could cause them trouble with Russia in the future.

Dunno about all that, but this DOES seem pretty stupid of him.

      1. Red Rocks Baiting n Inciting   8 years ago

NPR just stated that the information was from one of our allies in that region, and that sharing this information could cause them trouble with Russia in the future.

Would this “ally” happen to be one of the “rebel” groups we armed that melts like snow in the desert at the slightest resistance and commits the same atrocities as ISIS? Because I could see how that might get them in trouble with the Russians.

      2. Chip Your Pets   8 years ago

What was the source of that information? NPR’s left ass cheek, I’m guessing?

    3. Scarecrow Repair & Chippering   8 years ago

David Post over at Volokh has gone full retard, wanting to invoke section 4 of the 25th Amendment:

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

I had better opinions of the Volokh Conspirators, other than Stewart Baker and a couple who only come out of the woodwork to cry “Anti-Semitism” every time there’s the slightest disparagement of anything Israel. This one takes the cake.

What possible nexus does the Comey firing have with civil liberties? Other than that Comey was a liberty-violating hack who we should be glad to see go?
