Bakersfield Cops Shoot 73-Year-Old Man After Responding to Report of Someone Brandishing a Gun
No gun was found anywhere on the block or in the family's home or cars

A police officer in Bakersfield, California, shot and killed a 73-year-old man in a driveway, having come to the area to respond to a call about a man brandishing a gun, the Los Angeles Times reports. Police shot Francisco Serna after a witness pointed at him, according to the Times.
Investigators searched the area as well as Serna's family's home and cars for a firearm, but did not find one. Police did not mention whether they found any other weapon or object on or near Serna, whose family says was suffering from the onset of dementia. Serna's son says police had come to his father's house twice before after he activated his medical alarm out of confusion, but police told the Times they could not confirm they had ever been to Serna's house before.
The officer was placed on paid leave and not identified. Bakersfield was considering body cameras for its police officers as recently as last year, but so far they have only come up in discussions during the budget cycles, but nothing more. Authorities point to the cost of the equipment and storage as factors preventing a purchase. Police have released little information, and aren't required by state law to release much.
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, but has seen a spike in gun sales in 2016. It's difficult not to wonder how whipping up hoplophobia, whether to advance anti-gun policies or out of sincere ignorance, has helped create a population that sees dangerous individuals with guns everywhere, and calls the police accordingly, despite a long-term decline in crime.

And nothing else happened
I don't have a problem with this. He's 73 and white. He's evil and his murder is long overdue.
Am I horrible for laughing at this? I didn't want to, but it was funny. Damn you for the truth of that post.
Francisco Serna, and his son, Rogelio Serna, according to a search. I'm guessing this family is Hispanic.
Yeah, but he's a *white* Hispanic. That means he's just like George Zimmerman, and deserving of death.
OK, so, do we even know if this guy was here legally? Sounds like the police applying long overdue punishment.
Tell me you wouldn't shoot the guy in that photo first chance you got? That's the smile of centuries of privilege.
"Am I horrible for laughing at this?"
If hating an old demented man is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
Francisco Serna? White hispanic?
Huh, beaten to the punch... as usual.
The "witness" presumably lived nearby, so I suppose this could catch on as a nifty way of disposing of a troublesome neighbor.
"I am pretty sure he's armed, so make sure the officers responding don't take any chances!"
"We're sending our worst men right now!"
Through the miracle of unions and "training", they're all equally worst.
^ This.
Do they ever release the names or anything about these idiots that call the cops with this bullshit? I wonder if there is a way to find out....
In beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin: prosecutors decide that they can't put a dude in jail for defending himself against an armed intruder. But don't worry, all is not lost: they *can* put him in jail for possessing a gun in the first instance. He sold weed 15 years ago and, therefore, was a felon in possession of a firearm. Everything's coming up Milhouse after all!

Did the officer get home safely?
No! He was placed on leave. On leave!
Hey, buddy, why don't you make like a cop who shot an unarmed man and...leave.
Even worse, paid leave. Now he has to sit at home and cash checks, knowing he didn't do the work to earn that money. Poor guy.
Man, I wish I could get some of that sweet paid leave. "Hey, you, go home and don't do any work - and, for good measure, we're going to keep paying you as you do nothing!"
Shoot the witness, next time.
Member when "It's coming right for us!" was a South Park joke?
Yeah.
I get nut punched as soon as I log in and I dont even have nuts.
So you're a eunuch?
Ha! Nope, just a regular girl. Nutless.
Well, you can't blame me for assuming eunuch. Since "there are no libertarian women."
Why do you assume she's a libertarian? Perhaps she's just fiscally conservative / socially liberal...like Johnson/Weld.
Technically my mistake was in assuming that someone posting on a libertarian website would be a libertarian and therefore obviously male, since there's no such thing as libertarian women 🙂
We are rare, but we exist. I like the ovary kick term, I will stick with that.
Tulpette?
So you should be suffering an ovary kick.
There's a defense against this. The shaolins called it "The Way of the Grabbed Pussy".
Oh Ed - a nut punch before I've even had my morning coffee.
Today in "everybody is Tulpa", the following are actual comments from the Washington Post's article on the subject:

For now...
What an asshole.
All these were posted by different people (or at least different screen names), so there's more than one.
What a bunch of assholes.
Thanks for posting those JB. Just when I thought my faith in humanity couldn't get any lower...
We must submit to our overlords. It is our responsibility to make sure they never have any reason to shoot us.
Apparently we all have a curfew now.
So, none?
Does anyone use checks anymore? I haven't had a checkbook since the early oughts.
I have to pay exactly one thing by check. It's a living hell. And the only reason I have to buy stamps. Fucking stamps.
Does it start, "Pay to the Order of Heidi Fleiss"?
They have stamps for fucking now? What'll they think of next?
Hitler?
RBS-
Apparently, that poster is rather old.
the public also needs to be trained on what to do when confronted by police. Yelled instructions in the moment are not enough. For example, when the police say situation "yellow." a citizen might be trained to raise his hands over his head. "Situation Red," when someone is in immediate danger of being shot, might call for a person to lie on his belly with arms and legs spread.
Right... train people to be submissive and obedient... that's the way to go. Because humans are no different than Pavlov's dogs.
High school students should get as much training and practice on how to react to police as they do on how to correctly write a check.
IOW, none. Although, like a lot of proggies, this dumbfuck is actually close to realizing an important truth but veered away at the last second: that the purpose of High Schools (all of K-12 ,really) is not to educate but to produce subservient lemmings.
We all get a safe word. I like it. BDSM lives matter. Better yet, let's take away all the guns from the cops and give them riding crops.
let's take away all the guns from the cops and give them riding crops.
And instead of a shotgun in the trunk of their cruisers give them a cat o' nine tails.
SEXY, SEXY WAR ON COPS
On the plus side, the uniforms will be awesome.
Unfortunately, the safe word will be "gnocchi."
This has to be a put-on, right? RIGHT?
The widespread existence of Tulpa is the most damning argument against libertarianism's viability I've yet encountered.
That has to be the easiest way to murder somebody ever.
1. Call 911 and report a "man with a gun".
2. When the cops arrive, point at him and watch the fun.
Murder by Cop, version 2.0
I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes a thing that people do to get rid of people they don't like. Kind of similar to "swatting."
He was casing the neighborhood for houses to rob.
Police did not mention whether they found any other weapon or object on or near Serna, whose family says was suffering from the onset of dementia.
The problem was that he kept forgetfully casing the same house over and over.
I heard there are photos of him throwing gang signs on his Live Journal account.
Yo, Little Rascals, represent!
And it was his own.
The casing was just a case of just in case.
This is a brilliant way to murder someone. Just wait until you know they are going to be out in their yard doing something and call the cops saying they are waving a gun. The cops show up and murder the person for you. It is the perfect crime.
The libertarian believes that government should only be involved in activities that individuals cannot do for themselves.
Since murder is illegal, a good libertarian has no problem with using cops this way.
I'm pretty sure my logic is solid on this one.
The neighbors who pointed him out should be charged with negligent homicide. These so called go goder need to be held responsible for their actions. As far as the cop is concerned he should be fired.
I disagree. The person who pointed a gun and pulled the trigger should be charged. Stupid neighbors are stupid. The cops should presume that going in. And they should be held to standards equal to that of the rest of us, not lower standards as they are now.
I agree, Dianne. The person who pulled the trigger should face criminal charges. I do wonder, however, what the hell is wrong with Americans that they're so eager to sic the police on their neighbors.
Police shot Francisco Serna after a witness pointed at him, according to the Times.
Is that really all it takes?
Not only that, but look at the story below it in the linked newspaper: Cop shot somebody because he was carrying a handgun while riding a bike, apparently. Cop tried to stop him, he continued to ride a short distance, then got off the bike, that's when he was shot.
Serna's son says police had come to his father's house twice before after he activated his medical alarm out of confusion
Because you want to send police for a medical alarm.
I thought Obamacare was going to make us all rich beautiful popular healthy and immortal,
I wonder, how many guns have to be found after the fact to justify murder?
