  • The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for Monday's attack at the Ohio State University, carried out by student Abdul Razak Ali Artan. "The executor of the attack in the American state of Ohio is a soldier of the Islamic State and he carried out the operation in response to calls to target citizens of international coalition countries," the ISIS news agency said.

  • The Ohio State attack has spawned debate in the Buckeye legislature over whether campuses should permit concealed carry.
  • Donald Trump and Mitt Romney shared some garlic soup and frog legs in New York yesterday and the resulting photo evidence is beautiful. Romney did not say what the men discussed but told reporters the dinner had been "wonderful" and "enlightening and interesting and engaging."
  • Trump announced via Twitter Wednesday morning that he would be "leaving [his] great business in total in order to fully focus on running the country in order to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Hence, legal documents are being crafted which take me completely out of business operations. The Presidency is a far more important task!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 30, 2016

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a large-scale clinical trial of using MDMA to treat post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Hunter S. Thompson's widow is extracting DNA from his old marijuana and hashish stash in order to re-grow and sell "the authentic Gonzo strains," she said.
  • Needle-exchange programs for drug users help significantly reduce HIV-infection rates, according to a study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Texas passed a law this week requiring abortion providers to bury or cremate all fetal remains rather than dispose of them as medical-waste like previously permitted.

    SO MANY LINKS

    1. Just a thought not a sermon   9 years ago

      I like it--like going into a well-stocked candy store.

      1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

Shame the selection isn't terribly interesting this time.

        1. Just a thought not a sermon   9 years ago

Sometimes you get Jelly Bellys, sometimes you get Bits O' Honey.

          1. RBS   9 years ago

            Bit O Honeys are great.

          2. Red Rocks Dickin Bimbos   9 years ago

To be fair, Bit O' Honeys are truly heinous--as least there's a couple of mini-Snickers in here.

            1. Zeb   9 years ago

              Heinous and disgusting?

I can see it not being a favorite for some, but it's just some sugar and nuts.

                Vintage Zeb.

                1. thrakkorzog   9 years ago

The all time worst candy is that peanut butter taffy that comes in orange and black wrappers.

But which vintage? I thought 2013 was a good year.

Unlike the comments which are all Jelly Belly's with high incidence of black licorice, burnt popcorn and mexican pot man-ass flavors.

              Worst: butter popcorn *gag*

              1. Zeb   9 years ago

Jelly beans that taste like anything but fruit or licorice tend to be pretty bad to my taste. THe popcorn one is probably among the worst, I agree.

I prefer old school traditional jelly beans to jelly bellys.

When I was a kid I used to get jelly beans that were made at a local candy store. They were the size of Jelly-Belly, but superior in every way.

              2. robc   9 years ago

                Vomit is the worst flavor.

The squirrels will eat any ampersand followed by multiple letters, so it is actually the "s" that is causing it to be eaten, not the second M. You can type M&M to your heart's content, but pluralize it and bid it goodbye.
If you use the cheat code &+amp+; (remove the plus signs) for your ampersand, you can type whatever you want.

ISIS will claim anything that fits the image they want to project. I don't think an ISIS claim of responsibility says anything about whether the attacker had any association with or direct inspiration from ISIS.

  4. Just a thought not a sermon   9 years ago

    262) It occurred to me the other day that the Black Lives Matter motto could so easily have been Black Lives Matter Too. That's a lot less grating. BLMT even echoes GLBT, kind of a nice parallel with respecting everybody, right? But that's not the slogan. The way it's phrased, it's not a "hey, don't forget about us over here" kind of thing. It's exclusionary, and it's meant to be that way.

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

and it's meant to be that way

Yes, because their purpose is not to solve police abuse, it is to further drive wedges into the populace.

      BLMT

        Bacon, lettuce, mayo, tomato.

        1. LynchPin1477   9 years ago

I consider mayo to be an integral part of the BLT and have often wondered why it doesn't have it's own place in the name. But language is an emergent phenomenon and this is where we landed. The silent mayojority.

As it is, Black Lives Matter has created too many potential awkward conversations for me. Last year before I was really aware of the movement's name, someone had mentioned BLM, and I said something to the effect of, "BLM has been providing good places for target practice and hunting since I was a kid."

None of my co-workers has looked at me the same since.

    3. OBJ FRANKELSON   9 years ago

This movement seriously pisses me off, there was a genuine political opportunity to address police brutality and get some modicum of actual reform, but these asshats hijacked the conversation and made it about white vs. black and went Black Panthers on it and alienated a good portion of the potential support any reform might have had. Reigning in police unions and increasing officer accountability would have benefited every one, including black communities, dumbfucks.

      1. commodious got a stew going   9 years ago

I think they addressed it occasionally, but a lot of the lily-white performative artists enlisting themselves with BLM are more pro-PSU than they're anti-police brutality. Typical progressives, iow.

        1. OBJ FRANKELSON   9 years ago

Maybe this election will have taught the professional victims of the world that they do not hold as much sway as they think they do. Initial indications are that this is definitively not the case, but one can hope.

      2. Suthenboy   9 years ago

Dig into it and you will find that they are just commies using racism to foment strife and division. Typical MO for pinkos. They don't give a shit about blacks or police brutality. They are all about the destruction of capitalism.

By destruction of capitalism what they mean is overthrowing the current power structure and replacing it with themselves.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

They did the same with climate change. It's actually about system change. And middle-men like Gore are scoring big off it.

        2. OBJ FRANKELSON   9 years ago

Most definitely, but is frustrating that a moment to get something positive done was missed due to these fucklenuts stealing it. I know that collectivist pinkos will always be there, but the fact that they were allowed to wholly consume the movement is very galling.

Sucks to have your movement hijacked, I'm not sure what you do to prevent that.

    4. Suthenboy   9 years ago

What? Dude there is an alt-right of white supremacists that have taken over the white house. Donald Trump will make his first SOTU address in a white hood. Of course after a couple of years when none of the shit the spooky alt-right are supposed to be up to materialize and the few hundred that belong to it dissipate into nothing the ones crying about it now will pretend they never said anything.

Meanwhile BLM, a bunch of no-shit, straight up racists are helping to foster racism and rioting. The left sure loves them some agitators, but it has to be the right kind.

      1. creech   9 years ago

"the ones crying about it now will pretend they never said anything."

That's not how it works. They will be patting themselves on their backs saying their courageous protests raised the consciousness of right-thinking people and prevented the racists from obtaining their nefarious ends.

        1. Zero Sum Game   9 years ago

"It's exclusionary, and it's meant to be that way."

If any of deplorables (the set of all white males that are not self-loathing) is so clueless as to think that he is not excluded, perusal of the BLM website would disabuse them of their error.

Radley Balko does a great job in reporting abuses, overreach, and militarization of the police. But he does not celebrate people who murder police officers. BLM does, and in so doing they act to make things worse rather than better.

    6. Deep Lurker   9 years ago

Black lives do matter to the cops when it's non-cops killing blacks. If a black man is killed by a non-cop, then the killer can expect to go to prison. Even when the killing is justifiable, the killer can still expect to be arrested and to spend time in jail - "the process is the punishment" and "you can beat the rap but you can't beat the ride."

It's when the killer is a cop - especially an on-duty cop - that things are totally different. "Black Lives Matter" is a poisonous distraction that cops secretly are in favor of because they figure they can win a popularity contest against the usual racial grievance mongers. And because it distracts from the real problems of Blue Omerta and We Need More Rights Than You, Citizen!

  5. Bee Tagger   9 years ago

Romney did not say what the men discussed but told reporters the dinner had been "wonderful" and "enlightening and interesting and engaging."

Trump must have stayed off of Twitter since none of those adjectives describe Twitter.

    1. commodious got a stew going   9 years ago

Tweeting at that Dilbert guy yesterday taught me that nobody is dimmer than Trump's twitterati. They're perfectly willing, eager even, to beclown themselves on Trump's behalf by rendering whatever dross he tweets into a brilliant, subversive, and for reasons none of them can explain, "obvious" troll. No, guys, he really is that knee-jerk brainless about his tweets. In fact he's one of the only people using the platform the way it should be, unseriously.

      1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

        So...he is a brilliant troll.

        1. commodious got a stew going   9 years ago

          Trollception?

I really don't think so. He tweets, his ardent supporters retcon it into something strategic, and then set about telling everyone else how brilliant and obvious it is. But he's not deliberative or inspired, just reacting, often stupidly, to something he sees on TV. Hence tweeting about flag burning.

I don't know--I'm not sure it's a coincidence that his "one year in jail" comment on the flag-burning was a direct repetition of the bill that Hillary co-sponsored. On one mainstream news board that I read, this was brought up and the proggies response? "Hillary's not going to be President."

I suspect he tweets these things just to Pavlov a contrarian leftist response. If he came out in favor of single-payer healthcare, the progs wouldn't twist themselves into knots arguing why we need free market reforms.

But there's a paucity of punchlines if he's such a masterful prankster. The birther presser he held before the election, that was masterful trolling. The tweets are just brainstem-level precognitive reflex.

Texas passed a law this week requiring abortion providers to bury or cremate all fetal remains rather than dispose of them as medical-waste like previously permitted.

Isn't cremation how most discarded tissue is disposed of?

    1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

Most, but Fetuses are parted out and sold. That's why they ended up passing a law.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

You know, the Cash for Clunkers confiscation made it illegal to part out the used cars people traded in. If it's good enough for my 1993 Chevy Lumina...

      2. Zeb   9 years ago

Still not sure why that isn't preferable to just disposing of them. Might as well put them to some use.

        1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

Something about perverse incentives for the people performing the operations steering more people torwards the infanticidal route instead of discussing all options.

          1. Zeb   9 years ago

I can't get worried about that. The information on options is plenty available to anyone who wants to know. Do people really need to be told that keeping the baby or adoption are alternatives to abortion?

            1. Rasilio   9 years ago

If they do aborting the kid and ending that gene line is probably for the best

    2. Cyto   9 years ago

Isn't cremation how most discarded tissue is disposed of?

Cremation and Incineration are not the same thing. Crematories keep the remains segregated from other ash.

      So.... that's probably important somehow.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

The culture war is dark and full of terrors.

      2. Zeb   9 years ago

It's important to some because it makes abortion more expensive. That is the only reason for such a law.

        1. Libertarian   9 years ago

Only if you believe that pro-lifers are insincere. Whatever your stance on abortion, is it so hard to believe that someone who honestly believes abortion results in the loss of a life also thinks that the remains should be handled a little more delicately than Tommy's tonsils?

          1. Zeb   9 years ago

OK, I suppose some sincerely believe that. But there is a lot of political strategizing going on among pro-lifers as well and it's pretty clear that they will support just about any law that makes abortion more difficult, expensive or uncomfortable for the provider or patient. Which is quite understandable if you truly believe it's the equivalent of murder.

I don't have a lot of reverence for human remains in general, so it doesn't always occur to me that some people think such things are really important. I say as long as you dispose of remains in a sanitary way, it doesn't matter how you do it.

          2. Zero Sum Game   9 years ago

It's so weird that (supposedly libertarian) pro-lifers care so much about fetuses but not one whit about anyone already born.

If someone moved into your garage and started living there without your permission, you'd try to evict them peaceably (assuming no violence on their part) but with increasing levels of force up to and including death (this extreme measure involves the state in order to be legal everywhere). You own your garage. They do not. If they die in the process of removing them, so be it.

Even if a fetus is a life, if a woman is an owner of her body and it is an unwanted occupant of her womb, shouldn't she be able to exercise her property rights? The libertarian concept of self-ownership does not apply for some, apparently.

No, it was never about libertarian principles. It was about the religious perception that pregnancy is either a [gift of wedlock | punishment of fornication] and that doing anything to change that is a sin. All other justifications built up around the issue are maneuvering to make that position appear to be secular.

            1. Mickey Rat   9 years ago

              Kill that strawman!

            2. Azathoth!!   9 years ago

She did exercise her property rights--she used the machinery in her body whose purpose is creating more humans without putting the safety on.

Because she didn't put the safety on, a human was created.

That human has to inconvenience her--through no fault of it's own--for 9 months.

After that, she can tell it to get out.

Some people think that she should be able to murder the human she created because it is--through no fault of it's own--forced to inconvenience her.

Jesus lookalike backpacker can't help but be worshipped

Dressed in flowing robes and carrying a staff, long-haired Daniel Christos is quite the spectacle as he walks barefoot around Nairobi. People constantly request selfies and he is often met with a chorus of "Jesus, welcome back!"

Sightings of the antipodean computer science graduate are being recorded on the hashtag #JesusinNairobi in order for followers to keep track of his movements.

The former software engineer from Perth, Australia, announced on Facebook: "I am not Jesus! I have never pretended to be."

"Every single corner I walk on in Nairobi I have noticed someone either taking a photo or video ? while hundreds of times a day I hear people calling out 'Jesus.'"

VIDEO: SoCal parking lot fight turns into demolition derby

Dramatic video captured fists flying in an apparent argument over a parking space near the 8400 block of South Western Avenue on Sunday.

A number of women were seen fighting when one woman jumped into a white SUV.

The driver revved the engine and the video showed her smashing into a silver SUV, nearly taking off the passenger door.

The vehicles collide several more times as they maneuver back and forth in the small parking lot.

The SUVs headed into the street where the white SUV was spotted delivering one more crunching blow to the silver SUV. The white SUV then mowed down a fire hydrant, sending a geyser of water into the air.

Mother who turned breast milk into SOAP says demand for the 'creamy and gentle' bar is now so great she's set up her own business

A mother-of-two who uses breast milk to make bespoke soap says word-of-mouth demand for the bars has led to her turning the hobby into a business.

The unique soap, which is created using defrosted breast milk and different natural oils, is the handiwork of Jasmine Overton, 37, from Queensland, Australia.

In 1918, California Drafted Children Into a War On Squirrels

In April 1918, as American doughboys faced down the Germans in France, California's schoolchildren were enlisted to open a new Western Front. "We have enemies here at home more destructive, perhaps, than some of the enemies our boys are fighting in the trenches," state horticulture commissioner George H. Hecke warned in an impassioned call-up for "School Soldiers." He exhorted children to do their part for Uncle Sam by organizing "a company of soldiers in your class or in your school" and marching out to destroy their foe: "the squirrel army."

This children's crusade was part of Squirrel Week, a seven-day frenzy in which California tried to kill off its ground squirrels. The state's farmers and ranchers had long struggled to decimate the critters (also known as Otospermophilus beecheyi), which were seen as pests and a source of pestilence, particularly the bubonic plague.

As it so happens, I find myself in a rare moment of agreement with Clinton's coterie of admirers: She should take all the time she needs out there. In fact, she should stay in the woods forever. Bill and Chelsea can keep her company. Good riddance to bad leadership.

Since the 1980s, Bill and Hillary ? and they truly are a team ? have been dicking up the Democratic Party with a lethal mixture of centrism, incompetence and scandal that's finally come home to roost, politically. From their betrayal of the Arkansas teachers' union when Bill was governor, to their racialized, paternalistic attack on welfare and growing of the carceral state when Bill was president, to all the imperial fucking Hillary did of poor people around the world as Secretary of State, the Clintons have sold out everything liberals claim to hold dear, justifying it all the while as an election-winning strategy. WATCH: First Images From ExoMars Are Here!

As seen in the video, the first image was captured around 44 minutes before the orbiter came closest to the planet. Taken from a distance of nearly 3300 miles, with a resolution of 60 m/pixel, ESA.int said the image shows how the space agency "acquires data by taking images in color simultaneously: at panchromatic, red, near-infrared and blue wavelengths."

Another image taken during the orbiter's closest approach to the planet, at almost 146 miles, has been presented. Flying over the Hebes Chasma region, the highest resolution data acquired is at 2.8 m/pixel.

The orbiter also took a picture of the Arisa Chasmata, located on the flanks of a volcano called Arsia Mons. Additionally, an image shows a crater measuring nearly a mile in diameter located on the rim of a larger crater.

Netherlands Now Euthanizes Alcoholics and the Mentally Ill

According to a new report in Life News, euthanasia has even been approved for at least one "hopeless alcoholic."

The article is based on a story in the Dutch magazine, "Linda," in which Marcel Langedijk writes about his brother, Mark. Mark was an alcoholic and the father of two children. He fought alcoholism for eight years, losing his marriage in the process. After 21 trips to rehab or hospitals, Mark was tired of fighting and depending on his family to care for him. He asked to be euthanized.

The Life News account states that since he was physically and mentally ill, Mark met the minimum standard for death in the Netherlands. "A woman doctor in a black dress and sneakers arrived to give him his lethal injection. She confirmed his decision and then gave him three doses. He died quickly."

According to the Telegraph, Mark is not alone. Euthanasia for people with mental illness and dementia are increasing. Euthanasia cases are up 75 percent in the past five years. Euthanasia for psychiatric reasons increased from 0.1 percent to one percent of the total. Dementia cases increased from 0.8 percent to two percent.

    1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

Slippery slope and all that. Up here, when they drafted their 'die with dignity' bill they assured - ASSURED - people it would come with STRICT rules and guidelines. Yes, you can raise an eyebrow now.

      1. Just a thought not a sermon   9 years ago

Okay, but is there any reason to believe this guy wouldn't have committed suicide anyway? Does euthanasia offer insurance/legal advantages over just slitting your wrists?

        1. Cyto   9 years ago

That's still pretty rough. They knew he was battling mental illness.... it was the reason cited after all. Kinda defeats the "being of sound mind" decision-making process, doesn't it?

          1. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

            Not just that.

What about those who can't speak for themselves? Say, someone who had a stroke or someone in a coma. Much easier to pull the plug.

From our personal experiences, we had to fight like mad to the point of irrational just to keep doctors from pulling the plug on my father when he was in a coma. I mean like I had to threaten a couple of doctors. I basically told them they were evil fucks.

Next thing we know, he awoke and 12 years later still here.

        2. BearOdinson   9 years ago

I have always struggled with this from a libertarian perspective, legally speaking.

I certainly agree that having laws against suicide is simply asinine. But, to legally allow others to perform euthanasia is so fraught with peril.

For those of us more minarchists, there is a place for forcibly committing someone, provided it's done on a case-by-case basis, should be held to a high standard of evidence that they are a danger, and that they can't be held indefinitely (periodically they must be reviewed or automatically set free). Given that, many would argue that wanting to commit suicide is automatically proof, that the person is a danger to themself, and are mentally ill.

I would think that the example given is a textbook example of a person who should have been committed, rather than killed. Or in the absence of forced committal, at least shouldn't legally allow someone else to cause their death. It isn't like the guy was in hospice on so much morphine that he couldn't off himself.

This leads to the thinking that when a person is no longer "useful" to society, or too much trouble to take care of, then we are all better off if he just goes away.

I have always struggled with this from a libertarian perspective, legally speaking.

    6. Mr. Flanders   9 years ago

Euthanasia cases are up 75 percent in the past five years.

I'm guessing this is because they increased from 4 cases to 7 cases? If people have the right to life they also have the right to end it when and how they want so long as they're on infringing on other's rights. The horror.

    7. Brett L   9 years ago

My problem is that those people are taking up State resources. Eventually, the State paid doctors are going to start making the decisions about the best allocation of State resources. That's my problem with all single-payer/state-payer health systems. If your condition isn't 2 sigma or better likely to recover, they're going to start pushing you (or your family) to pull the plug and stop absorbing scarce resources that could be used on someone who IS 95% likely to recover.

'That was the end': NFL heiress Kate Mara reveals she dumped English ex-beau after he kicked Vince Lombardi trophy with STEEL-TOED boot

Kate Mara decided to dump her English boyfriend after he left a dent in the Vince Lombardi Trophy after kicking it with a steel-toed boot.

The actress' ex-lover, most likely Daredevil star Charlie Cox, booted the venerable award after he accidentally dropped it at her parents' house, where it had been taken especially after the New York Giants won the Super Bowl.

Now I'm rooting for one of the 7,000 ninjas to kill Daredevil.

Explaining what happened after the trophy arrived at the family abode on Conan, Kate said: 'My parents, my mom specifically, was very excited about this. And she said (to her beau), "Would you like to see it? Would you like to hold it?"

'He was a very enthusiastic man and he put on the gloves and then he went to lift up the trophy, but he lifted it up from the base, which we didn't know wasn't connected to the trophy, and it fell.

More Than A Dozen Pelosi Supporters Consider Turning On Her

But while Ryan is still expected to fall short in his bid for leader, more than a dozen lawmakers who have told Pelosi they planned on supporting her have told BuzzFeed News they were either wavering or fully intended to support Ryan. The members spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of alienating their once, and probably future, leader. The vote will be held on a secret ballot, allowing members to publicly declare their intent for Pelosi while later voting against her.

"I think the anybody-but-Pelosi sentiment is stronger than she thinks it is," one member said.

Another Democrat, who was leaning towards voting for Ryan, said that Ryan would be a better choice as the party has lost a huge amount of support with white working-class voters, and would need a more moderate voice to help win them back.

In case anyone missed it in the maelstrom of derp that was two weeks ago the New York Times has taken to attacking specific people for fleeing the reservation and voting for trump. In this case an 18 year old college student:

When she outed herself to me as a Trump supporter, I realized I had finally found the "silent majority." I looked at her, this suddenly strange girl who sleeps a few feet away from me, my college roommate. The silent majority has seen me put on my head scarf in the morning and take it off at night. The silent majority has touched my face, done my makeup, watches "Gilmore Girls" religiously. The silent majority occasionally enjoys sliced mango before bed.

We fought; I packed. This was Tuesday evening, so I headed to my friend's dorm, where a small group of us, mainly black women, tried to find solace in one another as the country slowly fell to red. I tried and failed to speak, to write. I ignored my roommate's lengthy texts.

In their defense they let the "other" respond this week.

The presidential election was the last thing on my mind on Nov. 8. I had essays to write and Italian vocabulary to learn. As a student at New York University and the daughter of a civil servant at the United States Department of State, I am familiar with political unrest and its potentially disastrous outcomes in the arms of ignorance and hysteria. I did not hold any particularly strong opinions about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. If I had voted, however, I would have picked Mr. Trump. I was focused on school. Italy's Most Popular Political Party Is Leading Europe In Fake News And Kremlin Propaganda

The leaders of Italy's most popular political party, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, have built a sprawling network of websites and social media accounts that are spreading fake news, conspiracy theories, and pro-Kremlin stories to millions of people, analysis by BuzzFeed News has established.

Amid growing concern across Europe over the impact on democratic processes of fake news and Russian interference, Italy is shaping up to be the continent's next major battleground thanks to the sophistication and wide reach of the Five Star Movement (M5S) propaganda machine.

This machine includes not just the party's own blogs and social accounts, which have millions of followers, but also a collection of profitable sites that describe themselves as "independent news" outlets but are actually controlled by the party leadership. These sites relentlessly regurgitate M5S campaign lines, misinformation, and attacks on political rivals ? in particular, centre-left prime minister Matteo Renzi. One of them, TzeTze, has 1.2 million followers on Facebook.

What It Takes to Open a Bookstore

they asked friends, families and neighbors for loans of $1,000 or more, and pledged to pay those loans back (with interest) over the course of five years. The store did not even have an opening date, Ms. Bagnulo said, so the backers were taking "a leap of faith."

They raised about $75,000 for the Fort Greene location that way, which helped to persuade conventional lenders to come on board.

For the new store, they wanted to cleave to that model.

With the help of 95 people, they raised $242,600 for the location, some of it from friends and family but the majority from people in the neighborhood.

The lessons from Greenlight are being put to use in other places. Brad Johnson, the store manager of a location of a California bookstore chain, Diesel, is using a community lender program that draws direct inspiration from the Brooklyn store.

Three new political committees have formed in the last month urging first lady Michelle Obama to run for president in 2020.

While the last several elections have shown that actual experience is not necessarily required for one to run for President; surely surely Democratic politicians would not step aside and allow Mrs Obama to waltz to the Democratic Nomination.

These three PACs are either led by the extremely deluded or grifters of devious sort.

Hmmmm, maybe we should all go in and start a Political Action Committee begging liberals for money to fund Mrs Obama's tour of the Iowa countryside.

Trump's Treasury pick says he wants to slash taxes across the board

In line with President-elect Donald Trump's proposals, Steve Mnuchin told CNBC on Wednesday his focus as Treasury secretary will be stimulating economic growth and creating jobs through tax reform.

"By cutting corporate taxes, we're going to create huge economic growth and we'll have huge personal income," Mnuchin told "Squawk Box," confirming he has been tapped for Treasury secretary.

Reducing the corporate tax rate from 30 percent to 15 percent will be a major goal for the Trump administration, the former Wall Street executive said.

Mnuchin said he was confident the new administration would be able to expand gross domestic product growth from the current 3.2 percent.

Before we move on, though, a note: For the rest of this piece, I'll be using masculine and feminine pronouns for clarity. But please note that plenty of people don't fall into one of these categories, and basically all of the data available is unfortunately based on straight couples.

Obama on Dems' Inability to Reach Voters: 'Part of It Is Fox News in Every Bar and Restaurant'

In this election, (white working class voters) turned out in huge numbers for Trump. And I think that part of it has to do with our inability, our failure, to reach those voters effectively. Part of it is Fox News in every bar and restaurant in big chunks of the country, but part of it is also Democrats not working at a grassroots level, being in there, showing up, making arguments. That part of the critique of the Democratic Party is accurate. We spend a lot of time focused on international policy and national policy and less time being on the ground. And when we're on the ground, we do well.

    California regulates cow farts

"If we can reduce emissions of methane, we can really help to slow global warming," said Ryan McCarthy, a science adviser for the California Air Resources Board, which is drawing up rules to implement the new law.

Livestock are responsible for 14.5 percent of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, with beef and dairy production accounting for the bulk of it, according to a 2013 United Nations report.

Since the passage of its landmark global warming law in 2006, California has been reducing carbon emissions from cars, trucks, homes and factories, while boosting production of renewable energy.

In the nation's largest milk-producing state, the new law aims to reduce methane emissions from dairies and livestock operations to 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030, McCarthy said. State officials are developing the regulations, which take effect in 2024.

And the dairy farms close shop and leave the state...

In France as in the U.S., the populist insurgency is gaining ground

France is now facing a likely choice in next spring's presidential election between a candidate of the far right and a rival from the extreme right.

Further proof ? after the victory in the U.S. of a presidential candidate many voters see as a right-wing extremist with fascist tendencies ? that Western democracies are swinging to the right, n'est-ce pas?

    Not really.

If anything, the upset victory of former Prime Minister Fran?ois Fillon in the primary vote of the conservative Republicans this month shows that the classic distinctions between right, left and center are losing much of their meaning. The big-picture trend is a widespread populist insurgency against the political establishment.

    1. LynchPin1477   9 years ago

The fact that you do see a populist backlash emerging across the Western world, in countries with different cultures, histories, and current issues, points to a deep, emergent phenomenon that probably isn't going away with a single election.

Sen. Chris Coons Regrets Making Appointments Simpler to Confirm:

Senator Chris Coons (D., Del.) said on CNN Tuesday that he regrets the rule change Senate Democrats made to the nomination process.

"The filibuster no longer acts as an emergency brake on the nomination," Coons said.

The senator was questioned on the nomination process and the rule changes that senate Democrats had made in order to keep Republicans from derailing their selected nominees.

Coons admitted that Democrats had watered down the nomination process after Kate Bolduan mentioned that Republican's could now take advantage of the simpler consent process.

"I do regret that. Frankly I think many of us will regret that in this congress because it would have been a terrific speed bump, potential emergency break, to have in our system to slow down the confirmation of extreme nominees," Coons said.

Coons continued saying that blocking President-Elect Trump's appointments now came down to the will of the American people, arguing that the general public will find his nominees too extreme and sound the alarm with their senators.

They thought they had in insurmountable lead in the federal electorate, which is why they were okay with drawing so much power to the executive branch. They miscalculated rather badly, but in their defense I think pretty much everyone including the Republicans agreed with them, which is why you saw so much money poured into local state elections by the party in case they had to use the power of the states to tip the balance.

        1. John   9 years ago

The Republicans did agree with them. In fact, I think the Republicans wanted it that way. They got to hold congress and the state governments but not be held responsible for anything. They were quite happy to let the Democrats turn congress into a well paid debating society. That is why you will never convince me anyone but Trump could have won this election for the GOP. He was the only GOP candidate whose heart was really in it.

She also urged people to "think of the pain he must have been in," and used the hashtags #BlackLivesMatter and #SayHisName (which BLM uses to denote victims of police brutality).

The only compassion I can feel is for the country itself, who lost a potentially valuable worker, someone who had come up from poverty and was on track to achieve the American dream with more years of hard work. I definitely scorn whoever influenced him to radicalize, and waste his potential, as well as attack innocent people in the name of God.

Other than in the immediate journalistic autopsies and on the fringes of the Left, has there really been much excoriating of Mrs Clinton and the campaign she ran?

All I have seen lately is the repetition of the effectively useless national vote tallies, thus comforting the Democrats that she really won the election?

And now the Clinton Campaign stepping into the recount moves is only prolonging their bid to stay relevant. I've even read that this is to partly weaken Trump but also to stay in the game for 2020.

I think that President Obama is doing all he can to undercut the Clintons (his Post Presidency is much more relevant in opposition to Trump than it would have been in support of Clinton)

But he is only proceeding obliquely.

Why aren't Democrats coming out publicly and denouncing the Clintons? Is there still some underlying fear that they might someday again hold power?

The Democrats rarely attack each other - it's all lockstep (see Obamacare) over the cliff. I doubt there will be much soul searching. Instead they will double down on the SJW shit, the elitism, and the usual cruddy economic ideas. To do otherwise would damage their base - which may (?) be fracturing as everyone tries to outdo each other playing the Victim Card version of War.

Diabetics never seem to have a problem getting clean needles. And a lot of diabetics are pretty poor. If people want to shoot heroin, that is their business. But fuck them if they are too stupid to use a clean needle. I wouldn't pay a cent to help someone that stupid and degenerate.

      1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Yeah, well, anytime bureaucrats can show that, statistically, the world is a better place if only the government makes me pay for something, that's all the justification anyone should need.

Ron Bailey's love of self driving cars is another example. Bailey thinks taking away people's right to drive their own cars is perfectly acceptable if doing so makes everyone "safer".

            1. robc   9 years ago

There is a big difference between loving self driving cars and taking away others right to drive too.

              1. John   9 years ago

There is. But Bailey is okay with making them mandatory.

            2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Bailey definitely is a utilitarian libertarian.

That often leads to arguments I disagree with, but will make legitimately libertarian arguments from a utilitarian perspective.

Bailey is not a democratic socialist. He doesn't justify taxpayer spending purely in utilitarian terms. His driverless cars position is mostly about how the government should stay out of the way of the revolution. Even his pro-vax arguments are about whether people should be free to put us at risk of infection.

Does the suggestion that forcing us to pay for needle exchanges have any such qualification?

              The correct answer is "no".

If there's any net benefit to non-heroin addicts like me, it's that I won't have to pay for other things--I also shouldn't have to pay for and for the same reasons I shouldn't have to pay for needle exchanges. That's not on the same level as Bailey arguing that I should be free to use driverless cars without government interference or that our kids shouldn't be infected with the measles because of other people's stupidity.

The idea that I should have to pay for other people's heroin needles is just utilitarianism + democratic socialism.

              1. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

Bailey definitely is a utilitarian libertarian.

Incorrect, Ken. Ronal'd Bejlij is a textbook example of a Technocratic Pragmatist.

The idea that I should have to pay for other people's heroin needles is just utilitarianism + democratic socialism.

Well, according to Ronal'd Bejlij, the next girl you date, Ken, might just have a sweet tooth, so a needle exchange is protecting the only thing you may actually care about, and that's your Little Ken. It's like you've never heard of health insurance and assigned risk.

*waits for Ken's Wall o' Text as a response*

                1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

"Incorrect, Ken. Ronal'd Bejlij is a textbook example of a Technocratic Pragmatist."

Bailey makes his arguments in terms of likely consequences, and he does so within the framework of libertarianism.

His worldview does seem to be influenced by technological optimism.

So there's two things I disagree with him about. 1) I consider utilitarianism hopelessly flawed because of its inability to account for qualitative considerations and 2) I see technologies themselves as neither good nor evil.

Those two things are often tied together--1) our freedom to pilot our own motorcycles may be indefensible from a utilitarian perspective, and 2) people might consider driverless car technology evil if it threatens their ability to enjoy riding a motorcycle for qualitative reasons.

One of the reasons free markets are better than central planning is because free markets allow individuals to make qualitative choices for themselves where central planning imposes qualitative values like "safety" on everyone from above. But I digress.

Suffice it to say that I disagree with Bailey on various issues, but he is not a democratic socialist. He is a utilitarian libertarian.

Justifying needle exchanges in utilitarian terms is a whole 'nother ballgame.

              2. Free Society   9 years ago

Even his pro-vax arguments are about whether people should be free to put us at risk of infection.

Should the owner of a woodlands be liable for his farmer neighbors livestock because wolves live in the woods? Should I be held liable for neighbor's house because a woodpecker nests on my property that I didn't kill? Should I be held liable for my neighbors cat because a hawk nests on my property and I didn't take steps to kill the hawks?

Bailey wants to make people liable for acts of nature.

                1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

                  I disagree with Bailey.

Everything we do or don't do is harmful to someone else in some way. If we're only free to do things that don't harm anyone else, we aren't free to do anything.

No, Farmer Filburn, you may not grow wheat on your own property for your own consumption--because that means you bought less wheat than you might have otherwise.

We should be free to harm other people. We should be free to open businesses that compete with other people; we should be free to criticize other people in public; we should be free to sleep with their wives and girlfriends. We should NOT be free to violate their rights.

A right is a choice, and we should be free to choose not to be injected with something--for the same reason rape is wrong. Rape is wrong because the victim didn't get to make a choice. The right to refuse was violated.

                2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

I guess the short version is that just because I disagree with Bailey doesn't mean he isn't a libertarian.

                  Not all libertarian arguments agree.

That's the great thing about being a libertarian. Once we agree that people should be free to make choices for themselves, people get to justify their freedom of choice within those terms-

Some of those justifications will necessarily conflict, e. g., whether your vax free child should be free to infect my child vs. whether you should be free to choose whether to vax your child--but as long as the crux of the argument is that we should be free to make choices for ourselves, it's a legitimately libertarian argument.

                  1. Free Society   9 years ago

Yeah I'm not trying to pull Bailey's libertarian card or anything. I just think his utilitarianism leads to a slippery slope, his vax position being the prime example. That doesn't make me anti-vax either, or that people shouldn't be held liable for being intentionally infecting others, or being gorssly negligent by knowing that you have some (serious) communicable disease and then showing up for work at the day care center or old folks home.

I'm just opposed to individuals being held liable for acts of nature. If we were to open that door, it would radically change the legal status of freedom, and not for the better.

          2. CatoTheChipper   9 years ago

Free needles for drug addicts don't have to be supplied by taxpayers. Some do-good private charity could actually supply the needles ... if it were legal.

Maybe free needles is a good idea. Even if this is so, it does not justify theft and coercion from taxpayers to fund it, nor does it require forced exactions. If so, let the do-gooders who believe the argument pay for it.

            1. John   9 years ago

Some social problems will solve themselves if you let them. If enough addicts get sick, they will learn to be more careful. And if they don't care enough to do so, why should anyone else?

              1. Citizen Nothing   9 years ago

Christian charity? Basic human decency? (I'm just spitballing here.)

                  Christian charity? Basic human decency?

I'm not sure how either of those concepts justify stealing from one person to fund another person. Charity isn't charity at the point of a gun and there's nothing decent about it.

                  1. Citizen Nothing   9 years ago

"If so, let the do-gooders...pay for it."
"And if they don't care enough to do so, why should anyone else?"
I was responding to the dialog between Cato and John. Of course charity is voluntary. Why would I have to say this, here?

                2. John   9 years ago

I am all for charity and decency but there is a fine line between charity and enabling.

    2. thrakkorzog   9 years ago

The unfortunate fact is that we're paying either way. And free needles are a hell of a lot cheaper than treating HIV or hepatitis. In my ideal world you would get a free needle with every purchase of smack at the corner drug store.

But let's not make the perfect the enemy of good.

      1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

That I have to pay for heroin addicts either way isn't a perfect or a good.

        1. thrakkorzog   9 years ago

Unfortunately, it's not like someone can just walk into the local CVS and buy a half dozen needles for $2 The situation is what it is.

Ideally, the laws would be reformed to be less stupid, but unfortunately that's not likely to happen any time in the near future.

          1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

I don't earn my paychecks for the benefit of heroin addicts.

      2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

My understanding is that in substance abuse terms, they have a word "enabling".

"A common theme of enabling in this latter sense is that third parties take responsibility or blame, or make accommodations for a person's harmful conduct (often with the best of intentions, or from fear or insecurity which inhibits action). The practical effect is that the person himself or herself does not have to do so, and is shielded from awareness of the harm it may do, and the need or pressure to change. Enabling in this sense is a major environmental cause of addiction.[3]"

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling

      3. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Refusing to "enable" mothers who can't afford the children they have is complicated by the fact that the victims of the irresponsible behavior in question are also the children themselves--who had no input or choice into the poor decisions that brought them into their impoverished state. Yet, even in those circumstances, there should be negative consequences for having even more children you can't support. In fact, if the government conscripts my paychecks into enabling irresponsible mothers to have even more children irresponsibly, I'm going to complain about that, too.

Maybe offering elective tubal ligation procedures for women at risk of having even more children they can't afford to care for properly, courtesy of the taxpayer, would be defensible from a libertarian perspective. But even by that comparison, needle exchanges aren't the solution to heroin addiction. Needle exchanges may not encourage addiction, but they sure as hell don't stop further use of heroin like a tubal ligation stops further irresponsible pregnancies.

  62. R C Dean   9 years ago

I used to practice in Texas, and the law there, which is pretty typical, allows fetal remains to be disposed of as "red bag" medical waste only if they are below a certain weight (can't be arsed to look it up). Your later-term abortions have always had to be handled as a dead person rather than as a tumor or somesuch. So this isn't a brand-new requirement, its more of an expansion of a previous rule.

Which is actually not a bad approach, IMO, as it mostly comes into play with stillbirths. The new rule is just petty harassment, I think.

    1. R C Dean   9 years ago

To be clear - the old rule isn't a bad approach.

    2. John   9 years ago

        1. John   9 years ago

      2. Zeb   9 years ago

From what RC says, it sounds like that was taken care of by the old law.

        1. John   9 years ago

          Yes. That is my point.

          1. Zeb   9 years ago

Ah. I was unclear on which law "that law" referred to.

        2. R C Dean   9 years ago

For stillbirths above a certain weight, it was, yes.

People who lose a fetus/baby late in pregnancy can and do grieve for it as if it had been born. As I recall, below the weight wasn't super human-looking yet, so whisking it away in a red bag was probably better for the parents as well.

I used to pick those turds (and Mary Janes) out of my haul every Halloween and toss them. Disgusting.

This, people, this man hath spake wisdom. This cements why Rhywun occupies a seat on the Top Ten Groovy List of Commentariat Excellence.

  78. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

I agree wholeheartedly with this list.

    Violets are... interesting.
Neccos are freaking great - I don't get the hate.

Real black licorice puts most candy to shame. it's great

Worst candy of all time is the tootsie roll. I wouldn't be surprised if it was communist in origin. Because actual chocolate that doesn't taste like a chewy brown candle is for decadent capitalists

What are those things called that are circles of carmel around a white sugary substance? Talk about having to pay admission for the good stuff. And oh yeah -- orange sugar peanuts!

  82. Red Rocks Dickin Bimbos   9 years ago

Whopppers aren't that bad. Can't stand the rest though.

    Huh?
    Huh?
    Huh?
    Ugh!
    Yum!
    Huh?

Oh dear, Blessed lap83, your poor, poor child, exposed to one of the most vile of candies, licorice. You should be pretty far into your pregnancy, you might as well start doing Jagermeister shots a couple of times a week.

Tootsie Rolls are a perfectly wonderful candy, and fills a niche quite nicely. You are clearly suffering delusions brought along by that swirling cauldron of gestational hormones.

I think that was the universal thought.

I never thought he would get the ACA passed. But I thought he might be moderately not entirely sucky on civil liberties but would be a disaster for the economy.

    So:

    Right: economy, GOP wins house.
Wrong: 2nd term, ACA, civil liberties

  86. Lord Rollingpin   9 years ago

He made good use of the IRS.

  87. Suthenboy   9 years ago

    Yes I do.

A 557 in 30-06. Very nice and have taken a couple of deer with it. Only complaint was that the bolt wasn't all that smooth when it was new. I polished the rails and now it is like silk. My son has it and never uses it. I kinda wish I had it back.

I have an old cz75 and, for a 9mm, it's pretty awesome. Not finicky about ammo, runs clean or dirty.

  89. Suthenboy   9 years ago

OH. And I bought 100 pieces of nickel plated brass for it, trickled 47 gr of IMR-4064 and capped them with 165 gr Sierra Game King HPs. They clock out at 2700 fps. It drops deer like a lightning strike.

Not cheap. He has that too.

I am sure I thought he would do something right, but I can't remember what it was. I knew he was going to be an asshole on civil liberties and people were fooling themselves. Anyone who was optimistic about that after he chose Holder as his AG was delusional.

  91. BakedPenguin   9 years ago

Yeah, I remember stating some modest hope he'd follow through on his civil rights stuff & transparency, instead of dropping it like it was shit and then washing his hands for the remainder of his presidency.

  92. John   9 years ago

I really thought the left would turn on him and Johnsonize him. I knew he wasn't going to change anything about Bush's anti-terror policy. I really thought the left would turn on him when they figured that out. But it turned out they didn't. They really don't care as long as they are in charge.

  93. Lord Humungus   9 years ago

Oh the projection - it was disgusting.

Anyone remember the "Bush should leave the presidency early so Obama can take the reigns" that was floating around after the election?

For the yucks - someone should write that same article but just put in Trump instead.

  94. John   9 years ago

Anyone remember the "Bush should leave the presidency early so Obama can take the reigns" that was floating around after the election?

Now those same people are trying to bully the electors into overturning the election and voting for Hillary.

  95. Lord Humungus   9 years ago

    *reins

  96. Zeb   9 years ago

I think that is true in many ways. But it's also easy to get carried away with being pleased over Hilary's defeat and forget that Trump is pretty terrible on most things too. And a number of people seem to be stuck in election mode.

    You mean Circus Peanuts ?
