Donald Trump's weekend fallout continues. House Speaker Paul Ryan says he will not be campaigning for Trump or defending him, focusing instead on promoting House candidates and the GOP agenda. A poll taken after the release of the infamous Trump tape on Friday but before the debate shows Clinton's lead growing. But Mike Pence is still on board the Trump train!

  • Today is Columbus Day, so of course, politics and outrage over how awful the man was and attempts to change the name of a holiday that nobody actually observes anyway (except as a day off).
  • Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says she thinks the sports-related protests of the national anthem to publicize police abuse are "really dumb."
  • A man in London has been charged of several counts of planning terrorism, one of which includes using encryption as part of an effort to plan an attack. Encryption is still (at the moment) technically legal in Great Britain but can lead to additional charges if connected to terrorism accusations.
  • A man in Waynesboro, Virginia, has settled a lawsuit against police there after he was forced into an involuntary psychiatric care for five whole days after a physical ailment was confused with a psychotic disorder.
  • Two police officers killed in Palm Springs, California, over the weekend were apparently targeted by a gang member intending to kill police, according to the suspect's own father.

US forces increasing Iraq footprint ahead of Mosul operation

The number of U.S. troops in Iraq has steadily grown over the past two years to now nearly 6,000 service members, up from almost none following the 2011 withdrawal from Iraq. The latest group, numbering nearly 600, began to deploy in September to Qayara air base, the facility 30 miles south of Mosul that is to be the main staging ground for the assault on the city. Trucks have been rolling in the base for weeks with supplies and equipment, preparing it so coalition warplanes will be able to operate there.

"You've got to look at Mosul as the crown jewel right now," said Maj. Gen. Gary Volesky, the head of U.S ground forces in Iraq, regarding the build-up of forces. The deployments have "all been targeted to assist in the Mosul attack."

Besides the hundreds of special forces, most of the American personnel operate back from the front lines, coordinating coalition airstrikes, tracking Iraqi ground troops, sharing intelligence and helping plan operations.

"Pope Paul VI's made four primary predictions about the consequences of contraception and they are very interesting:

"a general lowering of moral standards throughout society

                      "a rise in infidelity

"a lessening of respect for women by men

"the coercive use of reproductive technologies by governments"

                    2. Scarecrow & WoodChipper Repair   9 years ago

Moral standards are subjective, so what he really means is "I won't like it".

Fidelity is historically pretty scarce. Did he grow up believing Leave it it Beaver?

Women are far more respecte now that 50, 100, or 1000 years ago, unless by "respect", he means put up on pedestals so they can't do anything on their own.

That last one, what does it mean? Prison rape? What the hell are "reproductive technologies", dildos? IVF? Abortion?

                    3. Chip Woodier   9 years ago

"Amongst our primary predictions, are such diverse elements as...

"a general lowering of moral standards throughout society

                      "a rise in infidelity

"a lessening of respect for women by men

and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....oooooo!

              2. Agammamon   9 years ago

a general lowering of moral standards throughout society
                a rise in infidelity
a lessening of respect for women by men
the coercive use of reproductive technologies by governments

                Well
                1. Obviously this is all up to interpretation but if one of your moral standards is *marital fidelity* . . .

                2. Yup.

                3. Considering how many feminist 'pundits' are whining that they can't find a good man because everyone fucks them and runs . . .

                4. Yeah, see Mr. Pope, during the time when contraception was illegal or at least not easily available - its was during *that* time that governments were doing the whole 'coercive use of reproductive technologies' thing.

                Score: 1.5 out of 4
                Verdict: Jeane Dixon

Lost a point because #4 is blatantly incorrect and gained a half point credit because #1 and #2 are damn near the same prediction.

How he ever became as libertarian as he is puzzles me

Catholics, upon reflecting on the Reformation, became much more libertarian than they were when they were the only Christians in town. Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple hundred years before they created "social justice."

It is kind of an answer to Trump's question last night about why we broadcast our plans to invade places like Mosul. Well, Donald, they probably have people watching the airfields and other bases, and monitoring Iraqi troops as well. This buildup will be seen by the bad guys; the public announcements are to reassure people that the government is on top of it.

    Dumb AND "Disrespectful"

The reaction from the progosphere is one of echoing silence. RBG is like their idol; the dissonance of having someone with this much authority spitting on their pop-culture hero is... uncomfortable.

My favorite Podesta e-mail (from Bill Ivey):

Dear John: Well, we all thought the big problem for our US democracy was Citizens United/Koch Brothers big money in politics. Silly us; turns out that money isn't all that important if you can conflate entertainment with the electoral process. ... Secretary Clinton is not an entertainer, and not a celebrity in the Trump, Kardashian mold; what can she do to offset this? I'm certain the poll-directed insiders are sure things will default to policy as soon as the conventions are over, but I think not. And as I've mentioned, we've all been quite content to demean government, drop civics and in general conspire to produce an unaware and compliant citizenry. The unawareness remains strong but compliance is obviously fading rapidly. This problem demands some serious, serious thinking - and not just poll driven, demographically-inspired messaging. Rubio's press conference yesterday AM was good and should be repeated in its entirety, not just in nibbles. I will attend the Clinton fundraiser here next week but as I can only afford the low level of participation may just get to wave without a "hello." I fear we are all now trying to navigate a set of forces that cannot be simply explained or fully understood, so it is and will reamin interesting! "

"conspire to produce an unaware and compliant citizenry"

It's worked very well also. Besides in this chat room, no one will think much of that. The American citizenry have already been dumbed down to the level that they will willingly accept a dictatorship in exchange for a little free stuff.

      1. Raven Nation   9 years ago

they will willingly accept a dictatorship

Although it will have to be messaged appropriately. Most Americans will still have a knee jerk reaction to the word "dictator."

        1. Gadfly   9 years ago

Which is reminiscent of the ancient Romans' aversion to kings. Even as Julius Caesar was accumulating all the power to himself, he was very careful to continue to style himself in the republican manner while his enemies denounced him as a king. Heck, the Senate continued to exist for centuries after it ceased having any legislative powers. Symbolism is a powerful thing, even when it's empty symbolism.

          1. Raven Nation   9 years ago

Nice comparison. Republicans were more than happy to cede power to the state so they could be kept safe from terrorism.

      2. DenverJ   9 years ago

I think you're reading in the wrong mindset. I'm thinking, he's talking in the general, and being sarcastic and doesn't like the fact of "an unaware and compliant citizenry"
He blames the other team, and just reading that line, without any context, it could be easily posted on these boards and would be understood to be a lament on the civic education of the population, and an indictment of those we blame for the state of civic education.

      1. Krabappel   9 years ago

The part of that sentence I have a problem with is the word "conspire". Society isn't conspiring against itself.

        1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

The ruling class looks after the ruling class. Part of that includes conspiring together to create a population of cattle to rule over. Make no mistake, they see you that way and they absolutely are conspiring together.

    7. Lee Genes   9 years ago

Bill Ivey is a proponent of a Department of Culture and government control of the arts, etc... I expect nothing less than full-throated appeals to totalitarianism from him.

    8. Free Society   9 years ago

And as I've mentioned, we've all been quite content to demean government, drop civics and in general conspire to produce an unaware and compliant citizenry.

Interesting that "demeaning government" and conspiring to "produce an unaware and compliant citizenry" are not treated like contradictory goals. Since when have Democrats demeaned the institution of government anyway?

Since when have Democrats demeaned the institution of government anyway

Two police officers killed in Palm Springs, California, over the weekend were apparently targeted by a gang member intending to kill police, according to the suspect's own father.

Well, at least the cops are right when they say there's a war on cops. Somehow, I think the cops still have an intelligence advantage.

    1. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

I find it odd that the third officer hasn't been named. He was released from the hospital with no mention of a gunshot wound.

Something tells me that he pulled a Brave Sir Robin.

    2. Zeb   9 years ago

You start a war (war on drugs, war on gangs, etc), you shouldn't be surprised when your enemies start to treat it like one.

I'm almost surprised it doesn't happen more, but I suppose the gangs know how the game is played and dead cops are generally bad for business.

    1. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

ouch, a shot across the bow of psychiatry saying the ailments they treat don't have a physical component.

Actually, it's the critics of psychiatry who say that, not the psychiatrists. Remember, psychiatrists all went to medical school, they know all about the relationship between the mind and the body.

Interestingly enough, the story shows one of the main problems with mental health care in this country -- too much involvement by people with no medical training, a system propagated by those who want to separate mind and body (as if the brain isn't an organ). Note the people who assessed this poor fellow were police and a 'mental health employee', likely a social worker, who do mental health evals all the time but rarely have even enough medical training to know what a blood pressure means.

Some of us are working to ensure more medical involvement in serious mental illness cases to avoid these types of scenarios.

'Snowden' Actress Shailene Woodley Shares Her Own Arrest Video Via Facebook

Actress Shailene Woodley was arrested in North Dakota on Monday while protesting a planned pipeline that Native Americans say will desecrate sacred land and pollute water, an incident that was captured live on camera.

As she was led away in handcuffs, Woodley says on the video she was among hundreds of protesters but was singled out "because I'm well-known, because I have 40,000 people watching."

Some liberal Millennials have so internalized Sanders' onetime critique of Clinton's character?that she's just another cog in a corrupt machine?that they are implacably opposed to her. That was the case for one focus-group participant, Amanda, a 27-year-old human-resources worker who's also a single mother enrolled in a holistic-health certificate program. Amanda's description of Clinton: "Bitch, liar, false." She's planning to vote for Green Party nominee Jill Stein.

Amanda's attitudes were partly driven by disillusion with Obama, whom she voted for. "I'm just not pumped about what he did while he was in office," she said. "I feel like a lot of stuff crumbled while he's been in there." Her excitement about Obamacare, she said, has given way to dismay at her rising health-insurance premiums and deductibles.

The Native's ancestors just stumbled into the continent as well.

They had no idea what a continent was much less any conscious plan of traveling to a different one.

Of course they did manage to transform the place into a perfect Eden living in absolutely perfect peace and harmony with nature and each other and spending most of their time standing around gazing meaningfully off into the distance being noble savages and stuff.

And then Columbus and those mean, nasty and bad Europeans showed up and totally ruined the whole thing.

From 'Locker Room Talk' to 'Muslims Report Stuff,' the Internet Strikes Back

My favorite type of story, when journalists copy and paste tweets and make it seem important.

One prominent Twitter thread, jump-started by Kelly Oxford, a Canadian novelist and screenwriter on Friday, began on Friday, shortly after The Washington Post scooped NBC and reported on the recording of Mr. Trump making vulgar comments about women, including a remark about grabbing their genitals.

Many social media users and television pundits noted that his bragging amounted to a description of sexual assault. Ms. Oxford shared her own story of being molested when she was 12 years old and asked women to "tweet me your first assaults."

Second to only Tweeting about your assaults is to Reason comment about your assaults, so please, comment your assaults to me.

My first assault: a young lady liked to fondle my genitals (through my pants) during my high school years. I have yet to recover.

Oh, and I had a problem with a young boy fondling my genitals when I was a young boy. It was me. I'm a self-abuse survivor I suppose, but it's a condition you don't really conquer, you just learn to live with it.

      1. bacon-magic   9 years ago

You've conquered it to death. Yes, that is why you are blind now.

    4. KDN   9 years ago

Having read the transcript, I don't see the problem. Every single womanizer I've ever met has said similar things; if you think you can get laid, it won't hurt you to be aggressive. Men spend 90% of their pre-marriage lives trying to figure out when the first part of that sentence is satisfied and Trump, someone who is extremely rich, famous, and extroverted, likely picks up on it sooner than most people.

It's troubling to me that this mundane bit of boorishness brings about the vapors in so many people. This is nothing I haven't been hearing from blue collar and white collar braggarts alike since I was 13.

      1. SimonD   9 years ago

This guy makes some of the most legit modern "90s style" Hiphop beats of anyone out there right now.

Its mostly very derivative - but in a very good way. Pete Rock, Large Prof, Premier-style. He's got like a dozen records. I have no idea why he's not producing for bigger guys. (e.g. like the new De La Soul record, where they've actually formed a kickstarter just to raise money to make the @*#&$* thing) I know the sampling M.O. isn't as popular as Trap beats, but id think there are still a few people who do it (e.g. Eminem, Nas, JayZ, et al)

    5. John Titor   9 years ago

Luthor is, at least in his more modern form, the antithesis of Superman because he's an ordinary human who has achieved all he has through his own skill and ability, and thus elevated himself to the top of humanity through his brilliance. That's why he hates Superman, because he's just naturally better than human, without blood, sweat or tears. He's supposed to be some version of the Ubermensch, i.e. if Superman wasn't around he'd be the one saving the world and getting all the praise.

There's many words you can use to describe Trump but 'physically and intellectually superior to the common man' aren't ones I'd use.

Try to read this as if you didn't know who wrote it:

"Imagine, if you will, the ship of state moored at the dock in a peaceful harbor. A storm comes and it slips its mooring lines and starts to drift out to sea so that those on the ship can barely see land. Then one day they can no longer see land and they have lost their perspective of where they are. Later they forget that there ever was land.

"The two major parties are pushing us further and further away from the constitutional republic that is America....

"...Religious liberty is at risk from both the Democrats and Republicans. Over 60 million babies have been murdered by abortion, 4.4 percent of our population is in prison or on parole, one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. One in every eight American men has a criminal record.

"According to FBI statistics, 800,000 Americans are murdered, brutally assaulted or raped every year....We may have drifted so far from the Constitution that we have lost our perspective of who we are."

    1. Agammamon   9 years ago

A storm comes and it slips its mooring lines and starts to drift . . .

What the hell man? You may 'slip' mooring lines to remove them but they don't just *slip* off the bollards. Did they part? Didn't these guy double-up? Put out storm lines? Why didn't the Roving Watch catch this before all the lines parted? Where's the duty crew? Is the duty Boatswain's Mate asleep in his rack? Go wake his ass up.

There's so much wrong with this analogy in just the first paragraph.

Oh, wait - ship of *state*. So yeah, they probably took none of the standard precautions any *competent* seaman would have.

Well, I'm not sure where the tribe that used to live here is doing now.

As far as the tribe of which I'm a member; what is going on there now depends on the definition.

Who's land do you live on?

Whatever state that is willing to both maintain its ownership through violence and maintain its legitimacy enough for the people living under it to accept it. Welcome to the statist world kid. If you don't like it, the anarchist table is over there, and let me tell you, they're not really into the whole 'ethnic ownership of land' deal either.

        What do/did they call themselves?

Get back to me when you can tell me what your own ancestors called yourselves five hundred, a thousand, or two thousand years ago. Here's a hint: your identity probably wasn't consistent over that period of time. Neither were the peoples you are talking about.

        What was done to them?

If the answer is "they got smallpox and then the majority of them became Catholic and integrated into French Canadian society" you're probably not going to stop complaining, are you?

How do you benefit from that?

How did they benefit from the constant tribal conflicts over land that characterized pre-contact North America? How do you benefit from your ancestors' migration into Europe? Willing to cut the Welsh or Basque a cheque over that?

        1. John Titor   9 years ago

          What are they doing now?

If my answer is 'many are engaging in self-destructive behaviour like alcoholism or getting fucked by their own people in a broken tribal system that has little to do with the treaties their ancestors signed three centuries ago' you're going to hit me, aren't you?

Ask yourself why and find out.

Because for the vast majority of people this has no effect on their lives, especially considering that most of them don't even care about their own history that much? I mean, unless the author is willing to discuss Doric and Phoenician influences on early classical societies and what not.

How do you benefit from that? I have the "benefit" of paying the bailout

How do intervene?my view was you intervene as covertly as is possible for Americans to intervene. We used to be much better at this than we are now," she said.

      Another fake scandal, huh?

I don't think Americans have ever been good at "covertly" intervening, Hill.

Who do you think put Bonaparte in power and finally stanched the Revolution in France? Ol' TJ. That's why he sold us Louisiana cheap.

My great great grandfather built a log cabin on the Brushy bayou in 1802, a year before the Louisiana purchase. They went that far away from the river because everything close to the river was already taken. Napoleon sold Louisiana because it was infested with Americans who had, and I won't sugar coat this, a bit of difficulty doing what they were told by Top Men. He couldn't get rid of them fast enough.

Not a trump fan (tired of that preface, but people are 'tards), but am confused why there is no story about how he stomped hillary's dick into the dirt last night in the debate.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

      1. R C Dean   9 years ago
