Venezuela's Maduro Decrees All Workers Subject To Forced Labor
Can be ordered to work in fields for up to 60 days or longer to provide food for starving country.

Contributing Editor Glenn Garvin (Reason archive here) reports on the latest dispiriting developments coming out of Venezuela, a supposed socialist paradise that long drew postive notices from American lefties such as actor Sean Penn, columnist David Sirota, and others.
Boosters dismissed claims that the Chavez regime was despotic but most have gone silent now the country is plagued by a complete economic collapse. In 2013, Nicolas Maduro succeeded Chavez as president. Sadly, things can always get worse and, as Garvin writes, they are:
In an executive order that bypassed the muss and fuss of congressional approval, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro decreed that both public- and private-sector employees (that is, anybody at all) can be forced to work in farm fields for up to 60 days at a time — or longer, "if circumstances merit."
If Maduro's decree tells you something about how socialists define "democracy," the problem it's intended to address — the complete implosion of Venezuelan agriculture, to the point where millions of citizens have literally nothing to eat — tells you a lot about socialist economics….
When the government opened up a single border crossing with Colombia for 24 hours last month, more than 100,000 citizens streamed across in search of basic staples — which Colombia, mysteriously, manages to produce without resorting to slavery. Food is so scarce that 50 animals in the Caracas zoo have starved to death this year.
Venezuela's isn't the first socialist government to use slave labor to cover up its economic failings.
Fidel Castro ordered a million urban workers into the Cuban cane fields in 1969 to bolster a floundering sugar industry. And Cuba still practices something very close to slavery today with laborers that it sends to friendly countries to help pay down its foreign debt. (They're paid only pennies.)

Democracy Now!
So, does this fall under "public purpose"? I'm just trying to build a narrative as to why this is perfectly fine.
North Korea, here we come! We should have seen this coming, since the death of Chavez was treated much the same way Kim Jong Il's death was treated.
After their predecessor dies all these guy think they have to turn it up to 11.
wtF?
Same as any inheritance. The founder had the luck, insight, skill, drive, and whatever else it took to create his empire. However much his heirs have of the same qualities, they also inherit the money, and they do not inherit the need. At best, they can keep it going. Witness Trump, Donald, the Rockefellers, Hiltons, etc. Heard from any Carnegies recently? Or that fur trader from the early 1800s, what's-his-name?
So Manuro inherited the system and has to make himself look as clever and driven as the founder. He doesn't have a clue what to do, hasn't got the same opportunity (inheriting a rich system to denigrate and plunder), got where he is by means unrelated to the task at hand.
Andrew Carnegie didn't have any children...
Or that fur trader from the early 1800s, what's-his-name?
Vanderbilt?
Well there you go. You have to frame it as a question because you aren't sure. I just googled it -- John Jacob Astor was who I was thinking of.
Dammit, should've known that one, what with his name being my name too.
Regression the mean
Maduro is Bernie Bae
Bae, a Danish word for poop.
nice.
And Bernie is the English word for poop
I can't wait for 2020, when his devotees prop up his corpse and try to pretend he's still alive for a whole campaign season.
No they'll find someone else by that point.
Socialism is coming to America, as is the destruction of the Bill of Rights.
Republicans' mealy-mouthed defense of liberty ensured the rise of Trump, and Trump ensures that we'll all forget about free-market principles for a long, long time.
Whoa man, way to be a downer, I was referencing a dumb movie.
Sorry, this whole election has kind of killed my optimism.
Welcome to Stage 5/6 in Glubb's Fate of Empires.
After reading that, it seem to me that we're in stage 6.
How is this any different than a garden variety socialist critique of society?
I thought you were going to reference this dumb movie.
"Campaign at Bernie's: 2020" ?
Yeah but those progressive tears from a Trump victory will be so yummy.
"I can't wait for 2020, when his devotees prop up his corpse and try to pretend he's still alive for a whole campaign season."
I thought that is what they have been doing already.
"He is a tired old man. He wants to go home and go to bed." - That line still cracks me up.
Technically, it's b?, but the reason servers may have had a problem with too many non-ASCII characters in your post.

Ted S. ... worse than Hitler.
I am too lazy to look it up but I called this within the last month or so.
Socialism is nothing if not predictable.
Don't get smug, Hayek called it a lot earlier.
And Bastiat beat Hayek by like a century.
And Bastiat beat Hayek by like a century.
But nothing beats stupid. Witness socialism.
I called that Chavez's descent into socialism would lead to mass graves in Venezuela about 5 years ago. I really don't want to be proven right.
But I'm told that socialism is wonderfully self-correcting and 'burn it all down' has no consequences. What am I to believe now?
So, if anyone's taking up a collection to buy weapons for Venezolanos looking to overthrow their commie rat bastard rulers, let me know where I can contribute.
-jcr
This.
I assume Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will be making significant contributions. Because this sounds like slavery to me. Literally!
Crop-dust the country with Liberators? or Hi-Points?
I think most of the people that didn't vote Chavez or Maduro, who didn't cheer this shit on year after year, have left the country.
I am having a hard time working up a lot of sympathy.
I would disagree. The vast majority of support for Chavismo came from the lower classes. If you were middle class in Venezuela where are you going to move with your useless Bolivars? Other South American countries aren't exactly easy to immigrate into and the US certainly isn't going to take you unless you have direct relatives already here. Where are you going to go? I guess you could leave your bizness, property and family behind and be an illegal alien in Colombia, but that isn't exactly a life of luxury.
Or they've been sent to the reeducation centers.
I would like to contribute to the structural reinforcement of Venezuela's lamp posts as they will no doubt be buckling under the weight of commie traitors.
I'll contribute!
I'll contribute!
I'll contribute!
I'll contribute!
I'll contribute!
You are advocating an antagonistic foreign policy, shame on you.
I i get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless.
Heres what I've been doing:==>==>==> http://www.CareerPlus90.com
Don't fall for it! It's a trick to get you to move to Venezuela and work in the fields!
TamaraAliff and Hugo Chavez: both made big promises that are just too good to be true.
When will Sean Penn and that #BlackLIvesMatter founder head down to do their 60 day bid? You know, wave the flag 'n shit.
Note to any Reason readers in Los Angeles: if you run into Sean Penn or any of the celebdouches who kissed Chavez' ass, bitch-slap them for me and I'll buy you a beer.
-jcr
I'll chip in and make it two beers.
I'll make sure there's a napkin nearby to set your beers on.
(I don't got much money this week.)
Oh, goodie, a remake of The Killing Fields. *pops popcorn*
Wait .... WTF, where are the American bombing campaigns? Someone told me that socialism only collapses because American bombs make people crazy. And how come there isn't a self-serving independent journalist narrating his personal struggles living through this?
This is so much better than the original.....
You must be new to this. we're "bombing them with capitalism"-- which I believe was an argument made about communism in general at one time. The communists have historically been "encircled" by capitalism thus not allowing it to flourish.
It's due to global warming ,Hazel. Do try to keep up.
Oooooo. You might be on to something here. See, it's because of capitalism's rape of the planet and everything is connected so the planet rape is causing socialism to not work. Which is why we need Climate Justice Now!!! (In the form of large denomination US currency please).
The epoxying of 'Climate' and 'justice' together (which in a sane world would have no actual meaning) was no accident.
From a certain perspective it makes some sense. If carbon emissions are really negatively impacting other countries economically, then some compensation would be in order.
Problem is that computing the actual net costs of climate change is nearly impossibe, so the "climate justice" movement really just amounts to straight wealth redistribution from rich countries to poor countries. It's just another red-green watermelon alliance.
Given the higher planetary biomass everyone owes the co2 emitters and not the other way around.
The mainstream take on Venezuela is that it's mostly due to falling oil prices. Which is funny because many of the same people making that excuse want to drive oil prices to zero by eliminating oil to combat global warming. So, the question becomes, why do they want to see Venezuelans starve and forced into slavery?
The mainstream take on Venezuela is that it's mostly due to falling oil prices.
To NPRs credit, about three months ago I finally-- for the first time- heard them tack on the words "and other issues" after repeating the falling oil prices trope.
So, the question becomes, why do they want to see Venezuelans starve and forced into slavery?
I think the 'black box' in the flow chart is that after we eliminate oil, Venezuela can get down to the business of real socialism via collective eco farming.
"Mismanagement" is the term I've heard recently. Funny how that seems to be a recurring problem for socialism...
The entire economy ran on subsidies that were dependent on high oil prices. Without the subsidies, the drop in prices wouldn't have mattered nearly as much. The high prices merely masked the failures of the system.
That's such a raging contradiction. If falling oil prices are to blame for Venezuela's problems then you're admitting that high oil prices were propping up Venezuela's economy before. It's essentially an admission that without providing a constant stream of outside cash, socialism collapses.
Venezuela would be a utopia without American interference. This move by President Maduro is a result of the capitalist wreckers and kulaks trying to bring down Venezuela's socialist paradise on the orders of the United States government.
(now if you'll excuse me, I have to go take a shower)
You forgot to fit the Koch brothers in there somewhere
Whom do you think is funding those wreckers and kulaks? They're not going to work for free, you know!
I mean, unless Maduro forces them to.
It's a small shower.
The damn bourgeoisie do it again.
Save your popcorn, so you have something to eat once we elect our own Chavez.
"Save your popcorn, so you have something to eat once we elect our own Chavez."
Get ready for Tea Party 2.0 if Clinton is elected. Maybe it will be a little more effective in producing real Republican obstructiveness.

I thought Hillary's emails were never, ever hacked?
And the story lies - she did not support "the coup" in Honduras in 2009.

Is rousseff really that much of lefty? I know she is stupid but is this the sort of imagery she wants shown to the public in Brasil?
Her smile in the picture doesn't include her eyes. You can almost see the thought bubble over her head with the words "WTF am i supposed to do with this shit?" in it.
The end-state of socialism is communism. Communism = slavery.
Yeah, but this time was going to be different! Oh well, I'm sure we'll have better luck next time!
-Every Socialist, ever.
While people in capitalist countries argue about putting up walls to keep people out, commies put up walls to keep people in.
Walls have two sides. If it keeps people out, it also keeps people in.
Is this an Alex Jones thing? I thought he liked Trump.
That was a false-flag operation!
Trump's Wall could be the greatest switcheroo since the Greeks surrendered at Troy.
Get people to elect a right-wing authoritarian. Get him to build a giant wall on the border. Wait for him to cause an economic collapse. Elect a communist regime. Use wall to keep people from leaving.
Get him to build a giant wall on the border. Wait for him to cause an economic collapse. Elect a communist regime. Use wall to keep people from leaving.
Or try this. Start pushing for gun control. Get people to elect a right-wing Authoritarian. Achieve gun control. Wait for him to cause an economic collapse. Elect a communist regime. People disarmed already. Great success!
So the right-wing authoritarian is going achieve the gun-control?
So the right-wing authoritarian is going achieve the gun-control?
the efforts at Gun Control never go away. They go quiet here and there, but they've never left. You may have noticed they've been scoring some incremental victories lately?
Over the past 30 years, pro-2A movement has made massive gains. It's only CA and a few shitty east-coast states that are fighting it.
http://www.hni.com/concealed-c.....imated-map
Never forget that it was a right-wing regime in the US that imposed wage and price controls.
And got away with it.
(That would be Nixon for the historically illiterate amongst you.)
(That would be Nixon for the historically illiterate amongst you.)
That would also be FDR for the historically-historically illiterate amongst you.
Does "right-wing" even mean anything anymore?
Does "right-wing" even mean anything anymore?
the best I can glean, it has evolved to mean "opposition to the state".
What it always meant - the Commies think they are yucky - like the National Socialists.
What it always meant - the Commies think they are yucky - like the National Socialists.
But WHY do/did the commies think they are yucky? The commies wanted to appropriate the means of production by the people, and create a dictatorship of the proletariat. The National Socialists wanted to keep the factories in the hands of the owners, eliminate the trade unions, and organize the economy by directing the factories' production towards the goals of the state*.
The communists didn't like the fact that the factories remained in the owners' hands and the weakening of the trade unions, which was the pathway to the elimination of private property and liberation of the working class. That was the source of their beef.
This allows the modern left to equate those of us who want to maintain private property, but also eliminate the state interference in free trade or any hand in 'organizing the economy for national goals' as 'right wing'.
*Our friend Tony has repeatedly claimed that private industry should serve the means of the state. And he calls us "right wing".
Nixon was a moderate from the Rockefeller wing of Republicans, later to be called Nixonian Republicans. They weren't as liberal as Rockefeller anymore but they were definitely centrists.
Reagan was the conservatives' candidate at the time.
And by the way the politics of the time was called the "liberal consensus".
Get him to build a giant wall on the border. Wait for him to cause an economic collapse. Elect a communist regime. Use wall to keep people from leaving.
+ common sense ladder controls
- ladder-related deaths
right-wing authoritarian
this is an oxymoron.
"Walls have two sides. If it keeps people out, it also keeps people in."
That's just narrow minded capitalist thinking. A good socialist builds the wall on the bodies of the disappeared.
Which side of the fence has the latch? That's how you know which is which, I'd suppose.
Good thing Lincoln liberated the South from Communism in 1865!
WITH AN EXECUTIVE ORDER, BITCHES!
Maybe President Clinton could declare war on the US and then use her war powers to issue edicts.
Send all the BernieBots and the Obama mommas down there for 60 days to teach them a good lesson.
I imagine a violent counter revolution is a near term certainty.
Let's assume this is a given. The key task, in all seriousness, is to NOT follow up that counter revolution with a dictatorship and a pogrom. We don't want to give the left any excuse to talk about people being disappeared and so on, like in Chile. Fourty years after Allende fucked up Chile and all anyone talks about is the (supposedly) CIA-sponsored coup and how evil Pinochet was.
Let's not do that again, ok? When the regime falls we want it to be succeeded by Vaclav Havel, not Augusto Pinochet.
Let's be honest. After the revolution, some of the commies just have to go. Whether you show-trial them before you shoot them doesn't really matter. Or, just feed them to lynch mobs and say it couldn't be helped.
Like the Middle East, I'm not sure if that's possible in Latin America.
Chile and Colombia are the two countries in South America that aren't super fucked up, and they were both on the receiving end of lots of American interference in their affairs...
Columbia is completely fucked - *because* its been on the end of American interference.
The rest of SA was completely fucked in the 80's - when they all were receiving lots of American 'help' fighting communism. They've had twenty years since we stopped to sort of get things back in order.
We stopped?
We stopped?
Nothing to the degree it used to be.
This is hard to say. What alternative do you imaging existing there instead? Obviously not a developed western liberal society already? Even assuming one of many other available empires didn't step in. And I'd say manipulation has trailed off recently precisely because the imperial competition has gone away.
I don't approve of foreign intervention, but I don't automatically assume it is the cause of a country somehow not being an economic miracle. There's plenty of homegrown excuses for that too. Political basket cases seem to be the norm not the exception in history. Which rather makes sense due to the inherent corruption that comes with power.
The only chance of doing this would be to keep the CIA from coming in and picking a side. They're horrible at that. Everyone they fund ends up just as bad as the people they're fighting.
But, realistically, what are the chances of keeping the CIA out of another revolution anywhere? It like, their idiom or something.
...the (supposedly) CIA-sponsored coup and how evil Pinochet was...

Funny how it always comes down to forced labor with these commie pricks. I wonder where AmSoc is lately? Surely he can marx-splain why this isn't so bad.
Its just baked in. There is no way around it. The basic premise of socialism is slavery.
If you don't own yourself this is what you get.
Yes, but at least they're not having to suffer the horrors of income inequality!
Every time I hear that term I can literally feel the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
I would pay a million bucks to see someone slap Cankles hard enough to knock her blue contacts out the next time she uses the term.
She's about ready for a hard reboot anyway.
Isnt all that physical labor gonna make them hungrier ?
This.
When you don't believe in liberty, not even a little, pointing a gun at an innocent person and giving orders is just a natural step.
It's is the logical endpoint of all systems based on "positive rights".
It has to. You can't get people to work for the collective without putting a gun to their heads. It is really that simple. And no matter how many times it works out that way, these stupid fucks keep believing next time it will be different.
Let me give a try?
The only forced laborers are the lazy capitalists who now have to provide their fair share of labor alongs since the happy proletariat workers.
Government turned on its head.
"[T]he Government is merely a servant ? merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them." ? Mark Twain (1835-1910)
emphasis mine
Sanders Supporters want to order the government to take your freedom. If they were to achieve 51%...
Shovel ready jobs!
how to employ more people, give em shovels and force them to work see 100% employment works every time its been tried. that is until the shovelers turn their shovels into weapons.
Shovel-ready jobs is all socialism really produces in the end. Bury your fellow experimenters if you manage to survive. Find someone else to blame.
And I would point out that Trump is currently to the left of Cankles and that Maduro is another one of his personal heroes and that screech would say the same thing (and that we must obliterate all safe spaces for trolls immediately).
Whut?
How many hours will you have to work to pay for Trump's half a trillion of 'infrastructure' spending?
How many hours did people have to work on Obama's Trillion Dollar infrastructure program? You remember don't you? All of those "shovel ready projects"? None that I can remember.
Jesus Christ Shreek, that is fucking stupid even for you.
Oh honey. You're working too hard. Get some rest.
"Jesus Christ Shreek, that is fucking stupid even for you."
No, it's really just about normal.
How many hours will you have to work to pay for Trump's half a trillion of 'infrastructure' spending?
That doesn't make him left-wing. That still could make him left wing. He can certainly "organize the major industries" and control the results of production, vs owning the means of production. You know... like HITLER and Mussolini. Or modern Democrats.
Luckily, as the Democrats drift ever leftward, they're inching back towards owning the means of production, so there's that.
Trump is big government Keynesianism plus raging nationalism. So basically a hairs breadth from national socialism.
I re-read my comment and I effed it up.
That doesn't make him left-wing. That still could make him left right wing.
No, you correctly grasped that 'to the right of communism' does not necessarily translate as 'right wing' in any way shape or form. Hitler and Mussolini were to the RIGHT of communism--and to the LEFT of Democratic Socialism.
It seems to me that owning the results of production is basically the same thing as owning the actual means of production unless you're being somewhat pedantic. If you're giving orders that involve what industry actually makes, then everyone below that is functionally an 'unofficial' bureaucrat carrying out government orders. What does 'ownership' even mean at that point?
Bernie was strangely silent on the topic of Venezuela during the campaign. Maybe he can take a visit there now.
Well, he's too oldd to work in the fields, so he's lucky. Plus, he's been a fuck-up his entire life, so they probably don't want him out there anyhow.
Putting the elderly in the fields seems like it help with the demand side of the hunger issue along with the supply side.
Look, when you choose to enter the commercial sphere, you accept certain responsibilities and give up certain rights. And since these measures apply to everyone, they are fair and equal, not to mention necessary for the good of the nation. A few bigots sloths may whine about their "rights," which only exist thanks to the government by the way, but these are simply the rules that a civilized society has made for itself.
Look, when you choose to enter the commercial sphere grow your own food, thus impacting interstate commerce, ...
+1 Filburn
Actually I think it was +1 Wickard, to be precise.
Wickard was the Sec of Ag, Filburn was the farmer.
Yes, and Filburn lost.
Wow, first hyperinflation makes all Venezuelans billionaires, and now they'll all be employed, too! It really is a socialist paradise!
Welcome back!
Thank you!
Wow, first hyperinflation makes all Venezuelans billionaires, and now they'll all be employed, too! It really is a socialist paradise!
Squirrels, I swear.
Nah, just comment hyperinflation.
He said only people *employed* in the public or private sphere can be forced to work. he didn't say anything about the people who aren't employed. Meaning, most likely, the armed gangs of Chavistas in the slums of Caracas.
Maduro can "employ" them with an executive order.
Dude, they're not going to be the one's working. They are going to be the ones standing "guard".
To protect them from American spies, kulaks and wreckers. While they work.
They are going to be the ones standing "guard".
To protect them from American spies, kulaks and wreckers. While they work.
I believe you're describing "blocking detachments".
To be fair, it's not like anyone really needs a job, being billionaires and all.
El trabajo hace que la libertad
If the Venezuelan people will put up with this without revolting, then they are just fucking hopeless.
I believe you mean "arbeit macht frei."
This is Venezuela. It needs to be in Spanish.
In every latin american capital I have been to they had a german club and they all looked the same.
A restaurant with a closed off ,members only section in the back. The members were all in their late seventies to early eighties. They weren't wearing outfits designed by Hugo Boss, but they might as well have been.
There is a reason those Nazi fuckers chose Latin America and it isnt the food.
The trains run on time?
That's Spanish?
Bernie must be misty eyed with pride.
Nothing makes an old socialist feel as good as when he sees the youths working in the fields.
If it wouldn't be such a tragedy for the country, it would be funny as hell to see a few of the Bernie Bros out working in the fields with a hoe. You kids wanted socialism, well here it is. You sure showed those evil bankers and exploiters now didn't you?
Of course Bernie himself wasn't so enthusiastic for working in the fields - as he got kicked out of a Kibbutz for being too lazy.
LOL that's perfect.
Thanks a lot joe
Trust democracy!
Don't be so negative. This is just a point on the line of democracy.
Always with the slavery. Every damn time.
Well, that's where it starts. It's the fundamental premise.
Once upon a time they tried to pretty it up with 'each a slave to all the others' but that really didn't hide the reality as well as 'from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs'.
It is how it must end. Socialism is a system built entirely around the idea that you can if you just try hard enough get around the fact that there is no free lunch. The socialist looks at the world and wonders why it is that people have to work so hard and why some people seem to have so much more than others. They can't accept that life is unfair or that not everyone is rewarded equally for the same effort. Their solution is always some variation of enslaving everyone to work for the collective good and not themselves.
Mildly related:
"... you just try hard enough get around the fact that there is no free lunch."
"I know Bernie's math doesnt work but the things he wants to do are just too important for us to be held back by numbers." - Bernie Bro
And they say reality has a liberal bias.
Contest = whomever can find the best comment-apologia for Venezuelan slave-labor.
strangely i see no mention of this story at all @ WaPo, NYT
Searching for all "venezuela" related stories in both yields identical mentions of "oil prices crushing their economy", and mentions of their olympic basketball team performance. zika-related stories.
sadly the best i can to is "Democratic Underground", which really only counts as "1", and doesn't even qualify because its like shooting fish in a barrel with a howitzer
It's amazing isn't it? There's a real, serious economic/social crisis going on right south of us in South America and the press can't really be bothered to dig into it.
It is a bit amazing. It is almost like the media are a bunch of lying fucks who hide stories that embarrass their world view or something.
MUST FOCUS ON OUTRAGE OVER DEAD-MUSLIM-SOLDIER PARENT-PANDERING
I think there is an under appreciation of the degree to which news 'bias' is reflected in "what isn't covered"
most people think bias is most-evident in the "Spin" of what *is* covered. I think its often unrecognized how powerful "willful ignorance" is.
there was a weird phenomenon during the 'benghazi' kerfuffle (sept-dec 2012) where US media was basically acting as though "no one knew anything" for months on end
All during that period, UK papers were providing details on all the groups who perpetrated the attacks, the various rebel-group connections to Amb Stevens leading back to before the Libyan civil war, and the connection of both with weapons shipments being made from Libya to Turkey, etc.....
....when meanwhile, in the US media, they were still referring to the building that was attacked as an "Embassy" ... and insisting that there was still a possible role of a Youtube video.... etc.
The disparity was absurd. it was like everyone in the media had decided to not only 'slow pedal' any reporting... they weren't asking any questions *at all*. They just sat on it and hoped it would die from neglect. and that basically persisted through the NYT's failed attempt at a cover-up story
I think there is an under appreciation of the degree to which news 'bias' is reflected in "what isn't covered"
I noticed that fact about 20 years ago, when my favorite issues were eminent domain and civil asset forfeiture. Instead, my local newspaper ran a six week series on homelessness.
They're have to start paying attention when the regfugees start showing up in neighboring countries.
I just did a google search. And this has been put down the memory hole. I can't find a single Alternet or Kos or Democracy Now or any leftist site that has touched it.
Yeah. I have a "Venezuela" section in my Google news feed, it's amazing how many times I've read about the oil prices killing the country's economy. Although the first mention of forced labor, last week, came from VICE as I recall, and they're one of the few sources not leaning heavily on the whole petroleum market narrative
YOU SEE WHAT LOW OIL PRICES MADE HIM DO??!?!?!?!?
Not real Socialism!
/derp
All those people working together in the fields for the common good!
Socialism is wonderful!
It unites people!
It shows us that we're all in it together!
*swoon*
Relax. It's only UP TO 60 days.
Or longer.
I'm sure dear leader will extend it. That would seriously suck though.
Because, when it's obvious you're ruining a country, why just give up and let people recover, when you can double-down on dick?
That's the socialist way.
Here's my honest take on why socialists won't let go:
Because after the crisis, when they DO let go, there is in fact a short term period of chaos and pain as prices adjust themselves to reality. When there IS no toilet paper at the government price, if the socialists let go the price of a roll of TP goes to $500. That's predictably pointed to as "proof" of a market failure. So the answer is always, 100
% of the time, keep the price artificially low, but just "make more toilet paper-- somehow".
That's why libertarians are accused of being aspergers retards. Because we're able to see two or three moves ahead on the economic chessboard and that makes us some kind of creepy autistic Raymond Babbitt tooth-pick counters.
Whereas the average lefty explanation for things is simply "it's all interconnected". Yes, it's all interconnected, but the average lefty is mentally incapable of figuring out how. What is connected to what? In what order? How do incentives work? These things are unfathomable mysteries to the leftist brain.
Worse, since they can't comprehend how a self-organizing system could emerge from the chaos of the free market, they assume there must be some directing hand behind it, whether it's the assumed to be benign hand of government or the assumed to be malevolent hand of evil corporations. This is why socialists are the creationists of the left.
At best, you get the "it's all a big interconnected indistinguishable mush of stuff happening" and at worst you get the idea that some intelligent designer is behind it all.
Why we have a little Stalin down there. It sure must suck to be labeled a Kulak right now.
Imagine Obama ordering us out to the fields, talk about infuriating. He'd probably make us sing the International.

Just remember, the country that slaughtered commies decades ago is at the top of the list. There's proof that every dead commie improves quality of life for everyone left.
Hey, this worked in Cambodia! ... Ok, well, it didn't work and millions died. But we have the right people in charge this time!
This reminds me of George Fitzhugh's proslavery book *Sociology For The South Or The Failure of Free Society*, published soon before the Civil War.
Excerpts:
"[Southern slavery] is a beautiful example of communism, where each one receives not according to his labor, but according to his wants."
"A Southern farm is the beau ideal of Communism; it is a joint concern, in which the slave consumes more than the master, of the coarse products, and is far happier, because although the concern may fail, he is always sure of a support..."
"As civilization advances, liberty recedes: and it is fortunate for man that he loses his love of liberty just as fast as he becomes more moral and intellectual....The best governed countries, and those which have prospered most, have always been distinguished for the number and stringency of their laws."
Those two, in paradise, were given a choice: happiness without freedom, or freedom without happiness. There was no third alternative. Those idiots chose freedom, and what came of it? Of course, for ages afterward they longed for the chains. The chains-you understand? That's what world sorrow was about. For ages! And only we have found the way of restoring happiness? No, wait, listen further! The ancient God and we-side by side, at the same table. Yes! We have helped God ultimately to conquer the devil- for it was he who had tempted men to break the ban and get a taste of ruinous freedom, he, the evil serpent. And we, we've brought down our boot over his little head, and-cr-runch! Now everything is fine-we have paradise again. Again we are as innocent and simple-hearted as Adam and Eve. No more of that confusion about good and evil. Everything is simple- heavenly, childishly simple.
What else would you expect of a Democrat, I wonder?

Seems to me that there is a good tie-in here about the need for the population to be armed.
This kind of shit doesnt happen here for a reason. I refer to that reason as the second amendment.
