Hollywood Insiders Meet to Talk About Gun Violence Prevention, Influence of NRA
Not looking to go hard on themselves, just on your rights

Everytown, a political anti-gun group, participated in a summit of Hollywood creatives on the lot of Fox studios, led by Modern Family co-creator and showrunner Steve Levitan, on the topic of "gun violence prevention," as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Also in attendance were Fox TV CEO Gary Newman and 20th Century Fox TV creative affairs president Jonathan Davis.
Levitan, who said he's lost "a couple of friends" to gun violence, bemoaned the influence of the National Rifle Association while speaking to a room full of people that control much of what appears on network television today. I just have always felt that for a lobbying group like the NRA to have this much influence over our lawmakers is an indication that something is wrong," Levitan said.
Levitan declared that the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Antonin Scalia and "the likelihood of a Clinton presidency" meant there was a "real opportunity" for advancement of gun control. Levitan did not address how Clinton and Democrats' opposition to Citizens United and unfettered political speech applied to the way they could use their roles in Hollywood to advance their preferred political speech.
The meeting, fortunately, was not the start of some kind of ill-advised campaign to purge entertainment of gun violence (the NRA has often argued portrayals of violence in popular culture are responsible for certain crimes). "Could Hollywood be a little more responsible in its portrayal of guns?" Levitan asked. "Probably. But entertainment is entertainment. I understand that and I'm not looking to come down too hard on that." Levitan should make an effort to understand that gun ownership is a Constitutional right. "A right is a right," you could say, and Americans shouldn't look to "come down too hard on that."

I'm sure all of them have told their bodyguards to stop carrying guns, right?
Oh, come on. Their bodyguards' guns are good guns, because of the magical progressive pixie dust that's sprinkled on them.
"I just have always felt that for a lobbying group like the NRA to have this much influence over our lawmakers is an indication that something is wrong," Levitan said.
Yeah, who told those stupid voters that they have a right to influence the people who are supposed to be representing them!
Because no one can have thoughts that are there own, only thoughts that are influenced by lobbyists...
"I just have always felt that for a lobbying group like the NRA to have this much influence over our lawmakers is an indication that something is wrong," Levitan said."
On the other hand the influence of lobbying groups like the UAW, the NEA and AFL-CIO are just peachy keen!
Well of course, because they represent people, not corporations. And corporations are obviously not people, regardless of what the Supreme Court says. Except Hollywood and some (but not all) news corporations. Derp Duh!
People who have guards and live in gated communities are trying to take our guns from us. How absurd.
The funny thing about the left's perception of the NRA is that it's rooted in pure fantasy. They thinkthe NRA is some right wing organization that wants to kill children and gun down the gays. And when you tell Progressive that the NRA represents a million or two gun owners who wants their right to bear arms and be able to protect themselves and those who aren't able to fight back, they get a stupid look on their face.
They're full of shit. They just want to keep guns out of the hands of people who disagree with them politically.
Now that the drug war is dying down they need a "War on Guns" to make movies about.
Try somewhere between five and six. Their membership is comparable to the population of Denmark. And that's just the largest of a number of large groups out there.
Like the 13 million + people licensed to carry, a number that's growing rapidly?
Probably. But entertainment is entertainment.
"They can have my project's gun when they pry it out of my propmaster's cold, dead hand!"
That can be arranged, Mr. Etiquette.
*stokes Persian cat*
So we're burning cats now?
WHAT ARE WE COMING TO?
Could have been talking about caffeine or amphetamines.
Hollywood hates CU because funding limits would divert big money from direct politics into Hollywood propaganda. Modern Family seems pretty Libertarian to me so I'm surprised they'd be going after our gun rights. Also Hollywood loves gun violence. I would believe any claim to the contrary. The only thing better than drama is the real thing.
*wouldn't
Hollywood is the moral and intellectual equivalent of a pit filled with rotten garbage and swine offal. They don't have the standing to make moral judgements against anyone, gun owners included.
I'll take moral advice from a bunch of overpaid carnies when I ask them for it.
As a daily lurker, I logged in to say I'm stealing this and using it forever
I love dropping Colion Noir's name whenever some proggy tries to pull the "what if American blacks took up arms and applied for concealed carry!?" argument. I always see smoke coming from their ears from the cognitive dissonance.
Not a real black person, like Rice, Thomas, et al. You know, black people who disagree with them.
When you get tired of talking about Colion Noir, tell them about Otis McDonald and how he helped incorporate the 2nd Amendment into the 14th, with the help of a black Supreme Court justice.
Stand back though, the spray may ruin your clothes.
HYFR. Just got some reading material for the shitter later.
Thar be laws against gun violence already!
Levitan declared that the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by Antonin Scalia and "the likelihood of a Clinton presidency" meant there was a "real opportunity" for advancement of gun control.
Yes, America, your rights really are nine people in some black robes.
Fuck them. Also, Four String Suncaster Wheat. Nice summer ale.
Levitan, who said he's lost "a couple of friends" to gun violence
Duelling, no doubt.
According to the greater press, people at Charlie Hebdo lost a couple of friends due to free speech.
I'm assuming he means suicides. Otherwise I call "BS"
To be fair, last time I looked, the CDC categorized suicide under "gun violence". At least on their online research tool.
to be less fair, they shouldn't.
Agree, that shouldn't be included.
They should make dueling legal again.
I don't even own a gun but I'm thinking about joining the NRA. Fuck you elitist assholes.
Why don't you just get a gun and not join the NRA?
Better move. The NRA are too restrictionist. GOA is more of an absolutist 2nd amendment organization.
or the GOA, Gun Owners of America
bemoaned the influence of the National Rifle Association
The manifestation of Purest Evil. If the NRA did not exist, it would be necessary to invent it.
Anti-gun crusaders see themselves as superheroes, but they aren't succeeding. Therefore there must be a supervillain. Don't you watch any movies?
Great, so actors will still get to use guns in their movies, their bodyguards will still have guns, and we the citizens won't.
Well, you know, I wouldn't want to hamper any of THEIR freedoms.
Slightly OT: I just saw victims and victims families of the Charleston shooting are suing the government because Dylan Roof should not have been able to buy his gun due to drug charge that was entered incorrectly. So, we have Dems in Congress pulling their theatrics for a vote on "no fly, no buy" legislation that would require the government to keep an accurate list of people not allowed to buy a gun, and a group of victims suing the government because the government does not have the ability to keep an accurate list of who cannot buy a gun. Sounds about right.
"Could Hollywood be a little more responsible in its portrayal of guns?"
I'm not in any way a "Hollywood causes violence" type (looking at you, Tipper Gore) but sometimes I wonder if the aftermath of Hollywood cartoon justice could be portrayed in some reasonable and effective manner.
Let's just throw this at the wall: movie opens with gun battle, followed by 100 minutes of courtroom scenes and backstory. Maybe even expore the distinction between self defense and vigilante revenge murder.
Don't forget picking up the bodies, notifying relatives, scrubbing down the crime scene?
Have you seen either version of "The Letter"?
The Bette Davis version opens with the shooting, but Jeanne Eagels' manic performance is much more compelling and the ending is more satisfying.
I rarely talk to Progressives about gun control now. It's nuts to see some of the most reasonable people go completely moronic when it comes to gun control. When you ask them after an incident, what laws could have prevented the shootings, they always sputter, recover their senses, and then say that something needs to be done. Nothing substantial mind you, just feelings.
I don't even own a gun but I'm thinking about joining the NRA.
I'm thinking about buying another gun in a private transaction, for cash. Just because.
I'm not even a big gun person but the pants wetting makes me want to get a couple.
STAGGERING STATS = There Have Been More Mass Shootings Than Days This Year (2015)
of course the source of these headlines conveniently stripped their raw data of any links to the actual shooting events themselves (a previous example of their set here)
a quick scan shows 70% of "Mass Shootings" have 0-1 person killed (~40% = 0, ~30% = 1)
A filter which tries to screen the "most likely perpetrators" shows that about 80% of these events are urban teens, not psychopaths bent on mass-slaughter, or "law abiding gun owners Gone Wrong"
A term frequently associated with the reports is "block party"
If these people REALLY wanted to engage in sincere "Gun Violence Prevention", they'd be more honest about what the problem is.
But they go out of their way to obfuscate the problem in an attempt to pretend that somehow "NRA members" are involved somehow.
"If these people REALLY wanted to engage in sincere "Gun Violence Prevention", they'd be more honest about what the problem is."
Optics not good...
Shooting Tracker is run by the Guns Are Cool subreddit. They use "4 or more persons shot including the shooter and bystanders shot by police" rather than "4 or more persons killed" as the FBI does.
I'm aware of their methodology.
they used the same raw data files as other published sources, but they changed the way their data is aggregated so that if you want any of the 'context' that defines what kind of event it was, you have to click though each citation individually. (e.g. if you download the data as CSV, you only get the date, address, # killed/wounded, etc - nothing about the "story")
Oh, this is also cute = they don't cite suicides in the actual 'events', but they ensure to add the numbers to their headlines after the fact
They don't even require 4 people shot. It has to be 4 injuries and a gun fired. Audits of the underlying data show things like domestic violence call with wife punched, guy shot, cop cut hand on glass, and another cop accidentally tasered (this is a true and specific one they include).
It's all bullshit all the way down.
"If these people REALLY wanted to engage in sincere "Gun Violence Prevention", they'd be more honest"
Liars lie when they don't have a case worth making. If they were honest the only arguments they could make would be pro-2nd amendment.
They use pellet guns in their data.
And don't forget the Airsoft guns.
And pastries!!!
A term frequently associated with the reports is "block party"
When will we have common sense block party regulation?
*lifts face plaintively Heavenward*
No good ever comes from block parties, pi?atas, or trampolines.
The meeting, fortunately, was not the start of some kind of ill-advised campaign to purge entertainment of gun violence
Purging movies of "gun violence" would be suicide for Hollywood, and they know it. What they don't seem to realize is that the people lining up to pay to see the shoot-em-ups probably aren't the hard-core anti-gun types. If the moviemakers aren't careful, they'll bite the hands that feed them.
There is no vacancy on the SC because there is not a set number required in the Constitution. Technically the Senate could never confirm another Justice and the court would die off and disappear.
Fuck Hollywood. That is all.
The guy from Top Gun?

i'm no fan of the nra. i think they generally make a good case for gun rights harder to make. that said, there are two real problems with the criticism they get. the first is, their critics are perfectly fine with the gun control lobby having "this much influence over our lawmakers" and it's never seemingly "an indication that something is wrong", but god forbid it be a group they disagree with. and second, what do they think is the mysterious source of the nra's power? it's not money. politicians can get as much or more if they betrayed the 2nd amendment. it's voters. the mysterious source of the nra's power is that their membership and even many non-members vote on this specific issue. but apparently representing that "special interest" is unholy. only in america.
IOW, "Look! The NRA makes campaign contributions! OMG! (Don't look at Bloomberg outspending them.)"
OTOH, whatever you think of the NRA's politics, they are the ones winning the gun-rights war. They're doing it with 100,000 instructors teaching millions of people (potential voters) how much fun target shooting and hunting are.
Yeah, it's pretty hard to attack and unalienable right as a "special interest"!
I basically profit close to $10k-$12k every month doing an online job. For those of you who are prepared to do easy at home jobs for 2h-5h each day at your house and earn valuable paycheck while doing it...Then this work opportunity is for you

Nah you don't. You fuck for a living.
This trope that the NRA exerts massive influence over politics needs to die.
They spent around 3 million in 2014 IIRC. And then you take into account the fact that the NRA is just an organization of gun owners and not some greedy corporation (like I dont know, Solyndra).
The fact that massive gun control is incredibly unpopular among millions of regular law abiding Americans is too inconvenient for woodchipper fodder to directly address.
my best friend's mom makes $74 an hour on the computer . She has been without work for five months but last month her payment was $19746 just working on the computer for a few hours. find more information ...
