Terror Semantics, the AR-15 McGuffin, Runaway Aboutism, and the Clinton/Trump Follies: Working Through Orlando on The Fifth Column
Your favorite libertarian podcast tackles the nation's deadliest mass shooting

Le Fifth Column nouveau est arrivé! This morning, the triumvirate of Kmele Foster, Michael C. Moynihan, and myself chewed on the big story of the week, focusing on, among other things:
* The furious, occasionally baffling battle over the semantics of the phrase "radical Islam."
* The serial misidentification and demonization of the scariest looking of the murder weapons.
* Hillary Clinton's contention that "we cannot contain this threat. We must defeat it."
* Donald Trump's conspiracy talk.
* The extremely heavy lifting this week performed by the word about.
* What very many idiots wrote about the shooting.

Blaming guns for mass shootings is like blaming the Holocaust on Xyklon B.
Banning guns based on Orlando would be like shutting down the New York Times based on things Trump says.
"... shutting down the New York Times based on things Trump says."
Must.Resist.Urge...
This morning, the triumvirate of Kmele Foster, Michael C. Moynihan, and myself me chewed on the big story of the week
Me chewed on the big story of the week? Unpossible!
C'mon! that's a rather cromulent sentence on his part.
Whichever one of you it was that mentioned Politics and the English Language, I'm going to kill you last. Even if it's Moynihan. Unless it's Moynihan.
I'm a MoyniFan.
Je Suis Moynihan.
It's Moynihan.
*sad trombone*
Is this LNL?
AMA declares guns a public health crisis.
Warty, I believe you're a doctor. You must answer now for your tribe. Why do you believe this?
He's not the type of doctor that helps people.
Only if "help" means sexually assaulting them with a concrete dildo and naval jelly.
Sez the dude who probably keeps putting is iDevices on your genius network admin's network.
I was going somewhere with this then I lost it. Carry on Mr. Chiropractor.
Droll. Very droll, Paul....
*narrows gaze, cracks knuckles*
My wife pulls that shit from time to time just to get a rise out of me. She's much better looking than you are, so she gets a pass... And, I'll pit our admin (who can actually keep Russkij and Chinamen out) against Herself's alleged server protections as well as The DNC's.
Here, have some some matrjosh'ka dolls to find your way...
My mother's darker superstitious half was Czech, so I'm hip to all your slavic mind tricks.
HA! I thought so, too; my wife cured me of my delusions. Quite pleasantly.
As you probably know, in the EU, a DO, which is the USA is MD equivalent (I completed an MD surgical residency), is Doctor of Osteopathy, which is the EU term for a chiropractor. Most EU countries will recognise the equivalency (Spain is a notorious exception) on a case by case basis.
Ukraine recognised me right out to the box once I submitted all my CV and history, which is why I chose the place. I just wasn't expecting war to break out; Putin really caught everyone off guard.
NO ONE EXPECTS THE PUTIN!
Don't razz Putin!
I believe they're trying to make themselves more important, and that they should also go home and fuck their own assholes with something sharp and rusty.
Wasn't it just a few decades ago they considered homosexuality a mental disorder?
And doesn't male homosexuality kill more people via AIDS than guns? Why not ban gay male sex? It would save lives!
So, the gun really DID make them do it!!
The gun is the cause. Wow.
This same group wants to let the CDC investigate so that they can "understand".
Understand.
Even though they already stated their recognition.
Plus, It's so obviously OK for them to push for this, but not for NRA/GoA/ et al to lobby.
I guess it's good that we don't have "uncontrolled ownership" of weapons then, because last I checked, there is no shortage of rules and regs.
"Progressives" love to look at some industry that is just barely plugging along through all the red tape and call it "completely unregulated". Guns, healthcare, banking...
You think I'm an MD???? How fucking dare you. Those people are overpaid technicians with crippling alcoholism.
Doctor, doctorb, tomato, tomahto.
Playa, that reference is for you.
HI EVERBODY
My alcoholism is not 'crippling' you bastard! And, yes, we are technicians and overpaid unless you consider the fact that my actions save a "worthless' life every day, motherfucker. That said, the AMA is a bunch of socialist losers and a tiny fraction of physicians are actually members of that socialist circle jerk club. Most of the physicians I work with are small 'l' libertarians even if they don't know it and a good number know it damn well, are 2A defenders to the death and would gladly show you their firearm arsenal if you cared to ask them.
^^THIS^^
I trust you are correct.. That said, it ends up being more an issue if legislator listen to them. Which, they will.
Is there an AMA counter-balance group ?
Is there an AMA counter-balance group ?
Well, not quite a counterbalance, but there is the AOA, which is American Osteopaths Assn.
In terms of a large lobby/interest group who has a stranglehold on state medical licencing and clerkship/residency slots... no.
You think I'm an MD???? How fucking dare you. Those people are overpaid technicians with crippling alcoholism.
*Both me and Mrs. Groovus sharpening scalpels*
Ahem.... as you were saying?
I think the main reason I haven't been to a doctor in years is that I had a bunch of my shithead college friends become respected surgeons. I know what you people are.
LASIK is not magic, as you know, Wartington. I get what you are saying... (psst some of my colleagues *are* reprobates, admittedly).
In The States, my most loathed rival also happened to be the colleague who sent me the most patients for second opinions and vice versae. I hate that fella, with a white iron passion; BUT, I would trust him with my life, and vice versae, on the table. At surgical conventions, we couldn't be near each other without a fist fight possibly breaking out, but when it came to patients, he's top shelf.
The only thing that matters in surgery is the outcome...
PS
You just royally FerReelz my wife; she just stomped out of the room after I translated what you wrote. *grins* Boy, she's royally ticked!
You're welcome for the makeup sex.
My SIL graduated Yale Med School last month, and is headed for UMich for her surgical residency.
We created a fake website called Ask(her name inserted here).com. It's where you go when you're looking for the wrong answer, plus a lot of arguing.
How many doctors take the AMA seriously? My wife and all her colleagues hate them and never send them a dime.
Your wife? Doctor?
Pics please. With or without the lab coat.
Scrubs are hotter.
Strongly disagree.
Lab coats are the burqas of professional wear.
Not on my wife; her whitecoat is form fitting... and My Sod, whatta form!!!!
Not all of us can afford to woo an Eastern European hottie!
This is not what several Internet ads have led me to believe.
Not all of us can afford to woo an Eastern European hottie!
Which is why I am a RealDoctor, as opposed to Mr. Warty, PhCrackerjackBox.
Know the difference between an MD and a PhD? The PhD had to do something original.
The PhD had to do something original.
How many lives, demonstrably, has Doctor (in best Neal Boortz voice) Gillespie saved? I'd rather be an iterative life saver and healer of the sick, than write "original" pablum that never excised a tumor, diseased organ, or repaired a ruptured blood vessel. The PhD also assumes none of the risk and liability that the MD incurs implementing the PhD's original idea, with all of the benefit of heckling from the sidelines and Monday Morning Quarterbacking.
Both have value, both contribute to science, and there are hundreds of examples of MDs doing novel medical procedures and developing original implements and RX as well.
They ARE meant to show ass. But my wife came home too many times with some not so cool stuff on them. Yeah, I know. Different career.
Here you go.
Your wife? Doctor?
Pics please...without the lab coat.
Warty has Male Gazed Mrs. Dr. Groovy... he was a-slobberin'
We're entering the really stupid and dangerous part of our irrationality.
It's irreal.

He's not that kind of doctor.
I'm done for, son; I've got the gun. I don't have much time left.
Trumpcare promises to solve this crisis by making sure that everyone has access to quality, affordable firepower.
Simple solutions: Don't count suicides as gun violence, and legalize drugs.

Canadian bacon is a lie.
Psst .. it's ham.
Yes. A lie.
That's no way to talk about C-Tox.
So there doesn't seem to be a run on guns this time. Why not? Saturated market? Everybody's poor? Nobody expects a ban to stick?
If you find an 80% lower that's ready to ship, let me know. Not here, privately.
I think after Sandyhook, people realized for real and for true that ain't nothin' gonna happen.
Until Hillary appoints a couple of SC justices who somehow get through congress on a platform of throwing stare decisis into a fucking blender and eliminating the second amendment.
Which I was also assured would happen during Obama's first term.
And his second.
Don't care.
Still preppin'
Well when the sky finally falls, you'll have the last laugh.
Just don't be like other douchbags and constantly make affirmative predictions about when it will be. Because by the tenth time you're wrong, you really start to look like a weirdo.
Yeah, I have a sky gun. It can shoot the whole sky down.
I bet it's full auto.
It's not my fault the there are 11 missing days. It's hard to account for them when calculating the date of the rapture.
You have to use the old calendar. The rapture works on pre-revolutionary Russian time.
HA!!!
I always took you for a prep. I bet you wear golfing shorts and a polo on your Starbucks runs.
Worse.
Nantucket reds.
What happened to your common sense, HM?
Is this about the Nantucket reds?
Officially.
You have lost me.
About the preppin'. Don't you know your political betters will take care of you just fine once you come to your senses and give up?
My bad.
WTF?
What do you mean a couple. It will only take one. Heller was 5-4.
Heller was correctly decided, as was Citizens United.
But was the world an unfree hellscape before those two decisions? I keep hearing that those two being reversed mean the end of the republic. So did the republic only come into being in the last decade, after those two decisions were handed down? If it did indeed exist, then how would them being reversed end it, and not simply revert it to the status quo ante?
The Heller decision (and Citizens United) kept the status quo. Should Hilary appoint one SC justice that will change the status quo.
Excuse me. You are correct about Heller, However, the change in the Supreme Court will allow for much more stringent regulations.
And the status quo became the status quo in 1975.
Yeah. I think that is it.
You know, I fell into that stupid trap. After Sandyhook, I went out like two days later and bought an AR from Cabela's.
I was wrong. But it's still fun to shoot.
You might get some return on your investment.
Mitch McConnell is making noise about the watchlist no gun thingy bill
Now all I gots to do is find me somebody on that watchlist, who knows they're on it, and wants to buy a gun.
Unfortunately, I live in Texas, so stopping every swarthy person and asking them if they want to buy a gun because they're on a gov't list will take up my whole day.
How much?
You were wrong and should have purchased an AK47.
A to the muthafuckin' Z.
A to the K
I thought .223 was more common and more likely to be randomly found for purchase in the USA. I still don't know if that's true, honestly, but I figure with the number of weapons of that caliber sold, it's a fair bet.
The ammo more readily found for purchase, that is.
No doubt that .223 is readily available. I like the 762x39 in both the AK and SKS platforms.
I want to be able to pick it up off the ground.
Then drop your mag before loading it into your rifle.
I still thought people were on roofs shooting guns at helicopters during Katrina. Makes me feel kinda dumb tbh.
Nah, but a bunch of trained professionals (who are after all the only citizens responsible enough to carry firearms) murdered a couple people on a bridge.
Still, only those trained professionals can be trusted with firearms.
Exactly, a mere civilian might accidentally shoot someone, which is much worse than shooting someone intentionally.
No, people in the helicopters were shooting at the men conducting the mass rape of white Europeans at the Superdome.
FWIW, the shithead who shot up a small part of West Houston over Memorial Day weekend, managed to hit the circling police helicopter a few times.
He was photographed wearing a US Army uniform with an Expert Rifle badge, so that probably didn't hurt.
As many hits as he made on people, at ranges from 200-500 yds, with iron sights, I'm really surprised he didn't end up killing more people than the first guy he shot.
/cue bitching retired flyboy can't differentiate between between Army and Marines

That's hard on the equipment.
But the pilots go home safe to their families. Wait, where have I heard that before??
Are you just busting my balls, or are you really implying some sort of malicious intent?
Just ball busting.
When I was a wee newby years ago, several of my corporals & sergeants were former 82d or XVIII Airborne Corps at the time of that disaster and they made a lasting impression of how they felt about the AF.
That was a shitty accident. I remember when it happened.
The furious, occasionally baffling battle over the semantics of the phrase "radical Islam."
Honestly, I prefer to use the phrase "militant Islam," because simply calling it "radical" includes speech, which is supposed to be protected. For example: the last I checked, Louis Farrakhan is a Muslim, right? And he says radical shit all the time, yes? As much as I think he's loony and *potentially* dangerous (I don't recall if he's ever specifically called for violence), he is allowed to practice "radical Islam" as long as he isn't imposing force on another person, and/or threatening aggression/violence.
Not trying to be a provocative dickhead and I don't care about political correctness, but that would be the libertarian view, I think. Thoughts?
Right on, broseph.
Awesome. Thanks!
NOT...so fast.
You are factually completely wrong in every way.
I came to this conclusion for reasons which I refuse to articulate, because you wouldn't understand them anyway.
So, you know, take that!
Damn, you eviscerated me worse than John Oliver!
Except for the whole, you know, ordering a hit on Malcolm X thing.
Oh, right. Oops.
Fuck him. My bad.
Many people have very good reasons to believe that Louis Farrakhan was involved in the assassination of Malcolm X....
I have heard same from relatives who were high up in the Black Panther movement in the 60's. It kinda all makes sense when you think about it.
There is evidence that Farrakhan was behind the murder of Malcolm X.
This is unheard of!
Totally forgot about the Malcolm X assassination allegation, only because of the whole "innocent until proven guilty thing" (not that it means he's perfectly innocent because otherwise a lot of cops are 'innocent' as well).
Still, point stands. Maybe I should have used Jeremiah Wright. Is he a Muslim? *scratches head*
Can't ban guns, obviously.
But we can enhance the penalties for committing a crime while owning one.
I propose: if you commit a crime while owning a gun (not while USING the gun, not while CARRYING the gun, just for committing the crime while you OWN a gun), mandatory additional sentence of 25 years.
That means if you jaywalk while you own a gun (even if you are not carrying the gun while you jaywalk) 25 years in the slammer PLUS fine for jaywalking.
I proclaim: anyone who opposes this proposition is complicit in the Orlando shooting and in the next shooting which occurs anywhere in USA.
What if I chew a pop-tart into the shape of a gun? Also, does the shape matter? Like, if my pop-tart has a shoulder thing that goes up, do I get a sentence enhancer?
An assautart pastry.
Then ur pop-tart becomes a tort
You toads have warts, right? Are they contagious or not? People need to know.
and then Bernie will complain about teh "for profit prisons" because they clearly invent themselves. Their presence has nothing to do with busybodies looking for new ways of turning more people into criminals.
So, how long have you been a prosecutor?
Attention, any San Francisco area readers! An SF H&R meetup is in the planning stages for July 3rd. If you want to attend, please email me at my handle @gmail.com.
Maddow was on in the chow hall. She was referring to the rifle as an "assault style rifle". Gotta work those buzzwords in.
And she was very unhappy with the commercial used to advertise it, because it showed a black-clad man walking through a dark smokey room and shooting the evil-murder-death-kill-sad-cry-assault-rifle.
Oh FFS. Progressives live in a hollywood movie. They really do. They think commercials and 24 are real.

The electoral college votes in June? Wow.
Everyone already knows these two shitty candidates.
Too Bad Trump is shittier.
Kasich would be up 2-3 points right now.
BUT NOOOO! The rednecks who make up the GOP base wanted a wall-buildin' tough talkin' full-of-shit he-man for their dear leader!
So, you're saying you'd vote for Kasich?
No, I will vote for Johnson.
If Obama could run again he would carry 400 EVs though.
You will write in Obama and grostulate while doing so.
PB, that poll appears to have been conducted mostly before the Pulse Massacre (according to RCP, 6/10 to 6/13). And, on top of that, is an outlier of the recent RCP averages. Two things to think about:
1) Regression to the mean is likely here.
2) Pretty much all polls taken so far favor Trump on terrorism. If you take a terrorism crisis and make it prevalent, that is likely to swing things his way.
Re: mostly before the Pulse Massacre, at least half of the population had either A) not heard about it on 6/12 or B) had heard the President say that it wasn't terrorism at that point in time.
Hil-Dog +12 in the only national poll taken since the Pulse murders:
http://www.bloomberg.com/polit.....-june-2016
The Bloomberg poll is the first major telephone survey since the mass shooting, heightened furor over Trump's statements about the judge, and Clinton's June primary victories in California and other states that cemented her status as the presumptive Democratic nominee.
The GOP is going to bet butt-fricked unless some big changes occur (possible, of course).
MAYBE 50/50 before and after. But that's, again, making the assumptions that 100% of respondents knew about and had internalized the attack.
These are major knock-on effects that likely have not materialized in the 'who would you vote for' question yet.
Doesn't matter. Left-leaners will want an AWB while the wingnuts will want a Muslim ban.
Both ideas won't do shit to help, of course. And neither will happen thankfully.
I agree with you on the first three sentences.
The last sentence, I'm not so optimistic.
New Reuters has Hil-Dog +11.6:

Its gonna be an ass-whipping.
But things could change!
Oh, and the Bloomberg poll is Likely Voters - which favors Republicans. Registered voters often don't vote because they are stuck at work/jobs.
Crap, should I reconsider my prediction that Hillary will win? I feel like I might be wrong if I'm on the same side as Mr. "GOP bigshits will make sure Jeb is the nominee."
A year ago Hillary was 15 points over Trump. Notice the trend line.
Sure is fascinating that there has been very little discussion on the news about Islamic views on homosexuality. I wonder why that is.
Because it would constitute punching-down hate speech against said Muslims.
And reporters are fearful about some skydaddy's mullah issuing a fatwah against them. Bash Christians and get bad letters. Bash militant Muslims and get dead.
Perhaps TPTB are trying to decide whether it's "homosexuality" or "radical homosexuality".
Derp, you of all people should know that the talking point is that it wasn't Islam. It's that he was a self-hating gay. Islam was merely a way for him to channel his hatred for himself.
Ban self-hate!
I bought my AR in a Walmart parking lot two weeks before Sandy Hook from a guy off of Armslist. Took five minutes and I never even got the guys name.
Dude...that was totally supposed to be a gay hookup. He probably bailed when you clearly didn't know what you'd signed up for.
GayR-15 =/ AR-15

At least 480,000 people overstayed their visas last year, adding to a backlog that's reached some 5 million total
WDATPDIM?
A visa should require $500 deposit. Overstay, and you never get it back. $500 x 480,000 = $240,000,000.
I thought Visa had a minimum $1,000 credit limit.
Isnt CBP fingerprinting and photographing all non-citizens on entry these days?
Except for the thousands crossing illegally from Mexico....
Well right, but Rich was talking about overstayed visas, which are not illegal crossings. Wonder how many overstayers self-deport, i.e. 90 day visa and leave at 100 days or something? Or given 480,000 fingerprinted people, how many of those fingerprints turn up in criminal investigations?
Fingerprinting and photographing are not going to be deterrents to people who have no intention of crossing the border *twice*.
They will be useful when the anti-immigration people finally get serious about it and demand that mandatory ID, biometric checkpoints, and internal travel visas are required.
Here is an early story on the Amarillo incident.

Naked Lunch made total sense to you, didn't it?
Never read it. But I loved Slaughterhouse Five.
William Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch, Junky, and Queer, you socially retarded, vaginal blood clotted, hedonist. He's a real trip, and that's being charitable.
Read it, for real. If it makes sense to you, get back on the lithium (which you shouldn't have DC'd).
I am, being partial to devolution, of course a little biased in favor of the Brexit crowd. Granted, it's easier to make the positive case for taking action than the negative case against it, but the stay crowd also has the benefit of inertia on their side. And their arguments are simply inferior: a lot of pap about collective destiny and having a seat at the table, veiled threats that this supposedly beneficent institution will turn around and savage Britain economically if they choose to leave, and a rather tepid defense of the status quo with regard to immigration.
I admit to not following the situation very closely, but if the UK does leave the EU is there a fear that it might influence other nations to opt out as well?
It's not likely, since those countries are Euro dependent, now (though many do have some sort of local currency). Britain never surrendered officially the use of British Pound Sterling, which would make Brexit much easier.
Even The Krauts would have a hard time resurrecting the Deutchemark on short notice, and their export economy could possibly crater over such short reversal in currency.
I see. Thanks.
The bad news: our civilization might collapse.
The good news: Even if it does, future researchers will be able to learn something of our lost civilization in a secret room at Mount Rushmore,
The even better news: The room was completed in the 1990s, so that our future visitor will conclude that the Nineties must have been the apex of our civilization.
So I learned from the Matrix.
And they will contemplate why Washington, Jefferson, and Roosevelt didn't also have moai on Easter Island.

LewRockwell.com always can be counted on to get to the bottom of things.
While the media accounts keep shifting hour by hour, the more this Orlando thing unfolds the more it smells just like a Lee Harvey Oswald false flag narrative.
But Zero Hedge will not be outdone.
As far as I know, dead bodies, other than those of the perpetrators themselves, seldom if ever emerge from the terrorist attacks. No dead bodies materialized from the Paris attacks except those of the alleged perpetrators. No dead bodies ever emerged from the Sandy Hook shootings. The only dead bodies I recall from the San Bernardino shooting were the husband-and-wife-alleged-perpetrators, and their hands were handcuffed behind their backs. Do police handcuff dead people who the police have shot to pieces? I don't remember dead bodies from Brussels, just reports of dead bodies.
True, but the Bushpigs put out a ban on Iraq War body images as well.
The dead pile up but the media has gone soft and won't publish photos. When I was a kid the media put out photos of mutilated US soldiers in the Vietnam War and public sentiment turned against it.
The media are pussies today.
As per the Zero Hedge piece, I'll note that this wasn't Dr. Robert's first rodeo.
Roberts was almost a regular contributor back in the Golden Age of Virginia Postrel's leadership.

A huge international study of gun control finds strong evidence that it actually works
The authors are careful to note that their findings ... have not "proven" that gun laws reduce violence. The data, he says, is simply too complicated, and the analyses too primitive, to come to such a hard conclusion.
Hmm. I'll bet the *AMA* could "prove" it.
"The authors are careful to note that their findings ... have not "proven" that gun laws reduce violence. The data, he says, is simply too complicated, and the analyses too primitive, to come to such a hard conclusion."
IOWs, the data prove nothing of the sort, but, hey, gotta write a headline!
Gun ownership is at an all time high. Gun violence is at a 30 year low.
Let's stick our finger further up the butthole of that data and see if anything else comes out. Nothing but shit? Oh, OK.
The data, he says, is simply too complicated, and the analyses too primitive, to come to such a hard conclusion.
