I haven’t watched Red Eye since they took got hdcontentdump03 taken off youtube, and also since Gutfeld left. And between that and laziness, I’m not going to watch this one.

Can we talk steel studs?

What’s the benefit? Weight? I’m actually curious. I’m thinking about adding on to my house, and I’m in a HOA and can’t go outside the footprint. I pulled the plans from the city, and I’m not sure if the framing can support another floor.

To be honest, and this is pure supposition on my part, I think the preference for steel in commercial is a) fire hazard regs, and b) the expectation that any commercial building is going to be repurposed in a few years. We mostly work in malls, so tearing out old stores is pretty routine. Steel studs are much easier to demo than wood. But this isn’t my day job, so take it all with a shaker of salt.

Also, they’re cheaper and easier to install, would be my guess. Again, this is all guesswork on my part. I expect there are regs requiring steel studs in commercial buildings, given they many fire suppressant requirements the malls we work have to meet (this week we’re building a huge demising wall along a line of support columns which are caked in some suppressant material). Why you wouldn’t want to use steel studs in housing, I have no idea. Convention or regulation, I’d guess.

I’m also curious what you’re wanting to build. Another floor? My boss is about to build a two-story house on a tiny footprint.

Yes. I’m sort of built into a hill, split level. Half is 3 stories, half is 1 story with high ceilings.

I know where all the king posts and master studs are. Raising the roof isn’t the problem. I don’t know if the walls can be load bearing for another floor.

If the walls are 2×4, 16″-OC, they will support another floor. The question is whether the next floor down will support two floors.

They are, and then some. Build date 1986, so it also has a steel beam moment frame for earthquakes.

The 1 story area is mostly open, but I’d like the potential 2nd floor to to be 2-3 rooms. The partition walls could be pretty heavy.

Just guessing here. In commercial, the load of the roof is carried by the exterior walls. In residential, there are load bearing partitions.

My garage actually somewhat resembles commercial construction. You can’t have a sheer wall there because there’s a giant hole for cars, obviously, so there’s a steel moment frame with bolts the size of my forearm.

It’s not quite there yet, but it can be done, and eventually will be done. I have worked with a few Chinese students who have told me that this is already being done with aquarium tanks in peoples apartments.
