You Know Who Else Would Have Crushed Uber?
Salon praises the Germans' salutary fealty to rules, since it helped get rid of Uber.
Sometimes I wonder about the core commitments of America's progressive left. I really do.
Today in Salon (who are absurdly consistent attackers of libertarianism) appears an article filled with delight over the fact that Uber has been driven out of some cities in Germany.
That is, they are delighted that the German people will not have the opportunity to make money as hired drivers more easily, or be able to hire a ride more easily and often more cheaply.
They don't bother to argue why that's a good thing, or why anyone either American or German, should think that's a great outcome. They are merely delighted it happened, and a bit disappointed that we in America haven't succeeded in killing Uber as well.
What wonderful quality of the Germans is it that allowed them to happily succeed, where Americans have sadly failed?
Elias Isquith, the author, quotes Germans from walks of life beyond just taxi drivers or regulators pleased at clipping Uber's wings, and notes " a basic error the folks running Uber keep making. Namely, they think other Western democracies will be just as willing to sacrifice its values and bend to the market."
Then he pinpoints the salutary quality that American progressives must laud that Germans possess and we sadly lack (he's quoting something he learned from a New York Times story):
The Times found one financial analyst who liked the service because he appreciated the ability to pay for rides with his smartphone. But when he saw reports of Uber ignoring not only social norms between businesses, but orders from German courts, he decided he'd had enough. "That might work in the U.S.," he said, "but that's not how things are done here in Germany. Everyone must respect the rules."
…what Uber's experience in Germany (and elsewhere in Europe) reveals is a truth that tends to be either rejected or ignored by most elites in America. Which, simply put, is this: While market forces do have a logic and power of their own, they are neither irrefutable nor divine.
If only everyone respected "the rules," things would be all right, in America as it is in Germany, is Salon's stance.
The "logic" of market forces Isquith hates is, roughly, that people should be able to buy and sell services to better their lives that they choose as long as not directly damaging someone else's legitimate property or person. The logic of Germany that he lauds is "respect[ing] the rules."

Remarkably close to "orders are orders."
And since when did progressives respect the rules? See, e.g., Obama and the Second Amendment.
"And since when did progressives respect the rules? See, e.g., Obama and the Second Amendment."
See Obama and and a whole bunch more besides that.
Such as repeatedly changing various ACA implementation deadlines without having any statutory authority to do so .
The peasants must obey the rules.
Obviously our rulers don't have to obey them.
Get with the program.
No, you don't. You really don't.
Yeah, they seem pretty clear to me.
No kidding. Their core commitment is to wielding state power to advance their interests of the moment.
You forgot the part about protecting their spoils system. They're pretty committed to that.
Filed under "interests of the moment".

Don't be such a poo-head.
I though Harrison ford was terrible in SW VII.
I thought his performance was the second best in the film behind Daisy Ridley's
Better than Betty White and Orson Wells?
It reminded me of when they put stroked out Dick Clark on New Years countdown.
Don't be such a poo-head.
What could go wrong with Germans following the rules?
Turn on those showers, ze rulez are ze rulez!
They really seem committed to the stereotype that of being in deference to authority.
most stereotypes exist for a reason. something that didn't at least seem trueish to a lot of people wouldnt be a stereotype. you shouldnt "stereotype" people as in not realizing the difference between an average and an individual data point, but there's some use for broad generalizations i think
In Chicago the cab drivers tried to destroy Uber but Mayor Rahm knew that by doing so, he was risking alienation among the upper and middle class on the Northside (his base).
Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square and Oz Park would have had full scale riots...
Worse, the checkbooks would have closed up tighter than a spinster's legs.
he was risking alienation among the upper and middle class on the Northside (his base).
Uber probably helps Hyde Park more than the others
True story, I was once stranded at Union Station for a night after my train arrived way late and no taxi driver would take me to Hyde Park. (And I sure as hell wasn't getting off the Red Line and waiting for a bus at 55th and the Dan Ryan at 2 am....)
What wonderful quality of the Germans is it that allowed them to happily succeed, where Americans have sadly failed?
We're working on it, Brian. America is a big country with a "patchwork of laws" (you know who you're dealing with the fucking nano-second someone complains about the 'patchwork of laws'). It's going to take time federally regulate Uber and Lyft.
Absurdly consistent constant. There's nothing consistent about Salon.
Consistently wrong?
Touche.
Peak Derp is unreachable, but not for lack of trying by the folks at Salon.
That might have been the dumbest assertion Salon ever published. Ever.
Salon gets rewarded for breaking that record, though, so expect to see them forever pushing that bar forward (downward? assward?).
More like kicking it down the roadz...
While market forces do have a logic and power of their own, they are neither irrefutable nor divine.
You may not believe vox populi, vox Dei but market forces are just as irrefutable as gravity. You can flap your arms and pretend you're flying for a bit, but that splat at the bottom of the cliff is a-comin'. What, you think just because politicians trade in the currency of votes rather than dollars that responding to the will of the voters is somehow not bending to market forces? You are a very silly person.
"...they think other Western democracies will be just as willing to sacrifice its values and bend to the market."
Papiere, bitte!
""That might work in the U.S.," he said, "but that's not how things are done here in Germany. Everyone must respect the rules.""
Well, old school Germans follow the rules, but new school Germans who tend to speak Arabic are more into mass sexual assault and theft on New Years' Eve.
I'm not sure which of these groups are more irritating, although they both have a bad history when it comes to the Jews.
I thought that the vast majority of muslims in Germany were Turkish. Has that changed?
It's still true, but the Turks tend to have been there forever, have roots, and aren't particularly prone to criminality.
The people they have problems with are the North Africans and Arabs who are relatively recently arrived and are overwhelmingly young men who just arrived from virulently misogynistic parts of the world. They're the same ones who led Norway to create classes telling them that if a woman smiles at you it doesn't mean she immediately wants to fuck so try not to rape her.
"Why are you so afraid of a bunch of refugee widows and orphans?"
-Obama
I love the total refusal to blame perpetrators for crimes, too.
""Henry Ove Berg, who was Stavanger's police chief during the spike in rape cases, said he supported providing migrants sex education because "people from some parts of the world have never seen a girl in a miniskirt, only in a burqa." When they get to Norway, he added, "something happens in their heads.""
Something just kind of happens and then there's lots of rape! The gun went off!
I imagine it has a lot to do with a religious education that constantly tells them that Western women are whores and harlots.
They were asking for it!
Clearly it's the fault of German women that they aren't dating these miscreants.
Ahh progressives. The only people who can blame someone's upbringing for their crimes, but won't blame a racists' upbringing for being a racist.
NOTHING happens in their heads. It's who they really ARE.
Idiot.
What's the Norwegian equivalent to Stockholm Syndrome?
Oslo Syndrome? Yeh, I'll go right ahead and invent Oslo Syndrome.
Miniskirts cause rape?
My wife was followed quite a bit by Turks when she was an exchange student in Germany, though in fairness, none of them actually tried to rape her.
He referenced Arabs. Are Turks not Arabs?
Eyewitnesses identified the criminals as "North African or Arabs".
Turks are not Arabs, just like Iranians are not Arabs.
There's some intermingling going on. Kinda like how Greeks today are a mix of Greek and Turk. But don't tell them that. They go ballistic.
*sheds tear for Greek heritage*
Genetically, Turks are closer to Mongols or Siberians (with substantial Greek admixture) than they are to Arabs.
Iranians are closer to, well, Germans.
Aryans. Shoulda known.
So they're Indian?
"Aryan" and "Iran" are the same thing in Persian.
So many blue-eyed blond Iranians out there.
http://iranian.com/main/blog/k.....nians.html
Don't ever ever ever ask a Turk that question.
My Scottish grandfathers wants you to clearly understand that he's not Irish.
Thanks, that's new information to me.
For what it's worth, Scots were originally Irish invaders immigrants to the Pictish held lands in what is now called Scotland. So they do have Irish roots. The same cannot be said of the relationship between Turks and Arabs.
Yes, but the Irish are dirty Papists.
As a descendant of Protestant Irish, I resent that remark.
You're lucky "the troubles" have been suspended for now
Of course. A Scotsman is just an Irishman who is too cheap to drink.
(But does, anyway.)
Here's some off-the-wall weirdness tying the two together: there was a large Celtic tribe (from the Gaul) that settled in Anatolia near Ankara after being invited there in the 3rd century. They were the Galatians.
Or an Arab...
No. They are not the same.
Turks are nowhere near Arabs, except perhaps in places near the Syrian border where there might be lots of mixing going back quite a way. The bulk of the people in modern Turkey have much more genetically in common with the people who came down from the central Asian steppe with the Horde (the origin of "Turk", "Turkiye" and other descriptors with that root comes from the Oghuz who were called Turkmen and who lived in the Kazakh steppe).
They spent some time ruling as the Seljuks from basically the middle of modern Iran before settling through Anatolia (and mixing with the Hellenistic peoples).
Totally not Arabs.
"New school Germans"
My favorite storekeeper where I lived was a Turkish dude. He sold the most interesting bread in Germany. By the end of my time there, we would just make eye contact, nod and I would flip him a 5 mark coin, then high five him and take my loaf. He seemed old school, alles in ordnung.
Roaming the streets and attacking people - not so much. Fairly "new".
My favorite was the Doner Kebab guy. Greatest drunk food evar.
If in Chicago... http://www.donermen.com/
The currywurst was better than anything I got in Germany.
Oh, and patronizing a food truck makes Tulpa cry.
Turks are really, really good at bread. And cheese. And grilled lamb.
Here's a fun video.
It's a short documentary about what it's like to be a women and live near Arab/Muslim men in Belgium - basically, constant street level sexual harassment. In other words, this situation was well known in many European cities prior to the Cologne incident.
At the present rate of immigration from Arab and Berber countries, it is changing. But the Turks have been there for about 3 or 4 generations and I think generally constitute the definition of "moderate Muslim" if there ever is such a thing. Even they tend to experience some friction with the Levantine and North African diaspora on par with indigenous Europeans.
Irish, I think you just figured out how to bring about social peace in Germany- turn on the Jews!
The Muslims and the Christians can both agree! It's a tried and true German tactic!
Because it's 1096 2016!
Not many reports of Jewish rape gangs roving through city centers as I recall.
Once the Europeans get fed up and there is a serious backlash, it won't be the Jews going to the camps this time.
Do we have to stop the Muslim holocaust? I really don't want a WW III.
I think that would be a sequel to the Crusades anyway.
Don't under estimate the power of Europeans to blame the Jews for something.
Not many reports of Jewish rape gangs roving through city centers
That's because they're busy stabbing the newly circumcised!!!
They are too sated with the blood of Christian children.
Je Suis, that would work if there were still any Jews around in Europe. They're getting really hard to find.
I think they prefer not to be found at this point.
"turn on the Jews!"
If I knew how to turn on a Jew, I could've gotten into Golda Finebaum's pants!
Oh my God, the topic headings on the Salon article are precious.
"TOPICS: UBER, NEOLIBERALISM, WALL STREET, SILICON VALLEY, INEQUALITY, GERMANY, SOCIAL DEMOCRACY, EUROZONE, TECHNOLOGY NEWS, BUSINESS NEWS, NEWS, POLITICS NEWS"
NEOLIBERALISM! BOOOO, HISSSSSS
Neoliberalism is my favorite bogeyman term EVER. Just because whenever someone drops it, you know they are crazy left wing, and that they will blame EVERYTHING on it.
In the same way that conspiracy theorists blame the lizard people.
Whaddumean "conspiracy theorists?!
*tightens foil pakol, checks shotgun load for 'lizard shot'*
Lizard people? Who gives a rat's ass about the Lizard People? It's the Greys that pose the real threat.
psst
They are working together!!11!11oneone11!eleventy!
Lizard people are easy to beat. Just take away all the flat rocks and heat lamps.
Mr Lizard would be taking y'all to school right now, but he misplaced his flat rock and is feeling a bit sluggish.
I thought it's the whites that are the real menace.
I mean with their privilege and all.
#YallQaeda
Send them back to Tau Ceti where they came from! Damned pesky Lizards.
You Know Who Else Would Have Crushed Uber?
Excellent trolling of the commentariat, Doherty. Well done.
Absoultely A+ effort there.
Seriously. It's like he wanted to preemptively take our fun away or something.
Very mean.
Hence, very libertarian.
/places monocle on eye.
It appears to have only encouraged us, however.
*hangs head, shuffles feet, kicks rock*
This reminds me of the Gawker article about the TSA opting you out of opting out of the rapescanners. The comments take indignation that not everybody wants to follow rules that they don't like and elevate it to an artform.

Most elites in America consider markets to be divine and irrefutable? That will certainly come as a shock to the 1 in 3 Americans who need government permission to ply their trade. Or of the countless business owners who can give you more than a few specific reasons the US keeps falling in the economic freedom indexes.
Sometimes I wonder about the core commitments of America's progressive left. I really do.
I don't. And neither do you, Brian. Don't play coy.
OT: To other parents suffering like me: I've discovered that Ronnie James Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark" immediately and effectively drives the Daniel Tiger theme song out of my head. It had been in there in days. Learn from my example.
Now if only the Maya the Bee themesong could be driven from my mind. I have a recurring fear that I'm going to be sitting in a meeting with all the construction superintendents and pen my mouth to talk and all that comes out is that somg.
I haven't had that one inflicted on me yet. You should see the way the little one dances and claps for the Daniel Tiger and Sesame Street songs, though. It almost makes up for the horror.
Come on, sing with me.
CAUSE IT'S FREE AND I SEE THAT IT'S ME
WHO'S LOST AND NEVER FOUNNNNNNNND
I hate you, you hate me,
let's go spread some HIV,
take a big long needle, stick it in his ass,
ten more years is all he'll last.
(can tell that one is dated)
I hate you, you hate me,
let's go on a killing spree,
take a twelve gauge shotgun, point it at his head,
pull the trigger, Barny's dead.
My little sister was the right age for Barney. My mom immediately and irrevocably banned that from the house.
I still allow Elmo, in spite of the.... you know....
Tickling on the inside.
That was great, back in the days when MTV had so few videos, they were occasionally forced to play good songs.
Although this is probably more relavent for our current political climate.
Wait til you guys get to Dora the Explorer. It will make you homcidally angry.
It's currently banned in my house.
I wanted to arm Swiper.
AT LEAST BITE THEM, STOOPID FOX!!!!
One of the hilarious moment in the tarran household:
We saw a futurama episode that had a media awards show where one of the nominees was "Dora the Destroyer"
Without missing a beat, my daughter shouted "Sniper! No sniping!"
The jokes just write themselves.
Your daughter deserves all the high fives ever for that.
You are a good parent, I don't care what other people say. Also, swiper is doing the Lord's work
I always felt bad for Swiper back when my kid watched that shit.
And you're good looking. I don't care what other people say.
I have a face for internet commenting
You've won this round, but the war isn't over yet.
We're still doing negging?
I'm not, I've seen her pic. Nothing neg at all, not my style. I'm more of the sweet seducer.
I've been told I look young, but that's just ridiculous
At my age, 30 looks young.
Old Man Daddy With Candy Sugar
We didn't watch Daniel Tiger for almost a year because the "Use Your Words" epsiode nearly cost me a TV. Also aparently "fuck your fucking words!" Is not appropriately using my words.
Finally, I suspect Caillou is a secret Canadian, they just edit out the "ehs" on American TV.
Secret?
He could be from Louisiana!
No, he's openly Canadian. And a total pussy.
Cut the cancer kid some slack.
Well, either that or sexually aroused.
Ahh, so that's why you're the worst
Hey, I'm not into chicks. Dora is more Heroic Mulatto's bag.
No, Dora is Enough About Palin's bag.
That's just wrong. Wrong to say out loud what we were all thinking.
I believe he offered to double it if Diego watched.
Is it possible that Dora is just a mentally ill, homeless sexual abuse victim? It explains a lot (prepares pitch to Salon)
She does associate with an unsavory fellow who lives under a bridge.
Underage female and I'm not your first thought? I feel... othered.
I refuse to respond to that, other than to mention that the voice of Dora is now 19 years old.
Well, Dora has a whole new meaning to me now.
Wait, is the Maya the Bee theme still the same as it was when it was traditional animation when my younger sibs were watching cartoons?
*checks on youtube*
Traditional
new
Oooh, the new one is less catchy but so much worse.
Just because you identify with the creepy guy in the video is no reason to pimp Rainbow in the Dark.
You don't know anything. In my heart, I'm a 5 foot tall Sicilian with a gigantic set of pipes.
In real life, the same, but you're only 4'8".
You let me have my dreams, you fuck!
I thought he was 6'8" and weighs a fucking ton?
That's only if you include the Doomcock.
If someone sets him on top of a large rock, sure.
Wartyton, Warty-TON;
Six-foot-twenty, and killing for fun
Twelve stories tall, made of radiation,
"with a gigantic set of pipes."
At first glance, this looked like with a giant set of nipples.
I'm also legally blind.
Daniel Tiger? Blech!
I'm glad I'm a shitty parent and let the little tyke watch Teen Titans Go.
People think they know what joy is. Have they ever uncle'd a child who thought Laffy Taffy was high-brow? Then they know nothing.
Teen Titans Go is entertaining the first 1000 times.
I wish there were more than 7 episodes.
Hey, they're up to three seasons! And play them all every weekend.
Indeed, it is the state's rules that are divine.
Uber does not like to ask permission and obey orders, so that makes them an enemy of freedom.
Uber, like, lobbied the local government and didn't want to follow da rulz. How dare they?!?@
Seriously, that's the gist of the Salon comments.
I would like leftists to actually say what rules and regulations are needed since they are being clamored for.
Whatever rules that are being proposed by far left politicians. Leftists don't judge the rules by their substance, they judge them by their source.
They like the medallion system that monopolizes consumer transportation, apparently. They're champions of consumers, you know.
This is what I don't get. Everything they champion makes things worse, especially for the people whose side they claim to be on.
It can't just be as simple as "rules are rules". I mean... that's just stoopid.
Rules require Rulers, duh
The only way for rules to exist is for them to be imposed by threats of violence. Otherwise there is no incentive to follow them. Libertarians live in a fantasy world where businesses and customers follow rules and customs that are not imposed by government dictat. Look, if there was no law against murder, then murder would cease to be wrong. Everyone would murder everyone else until there was no one left. Economic rules are exactly the same. They need to be imposed by government force or you get chaos, anarchy, and death. That is what Uber is trying to do - skirt the rules. If this is allowed, then the result will be terrible to behold. That's why government must do something.
They are the spiritual (and in many cases physical) descendants of the elites who thought they should make rules because they were naturally better than others. These elites have had to watch for centuries as people progressively (no pun intended) ignored their rules more and more often, lives getting better and better while it happened. So the elites retreated from reality into a fantasy world were if everyone obeyed them things would be better. They refuse to leave this sanctuary of imagination because to do so would expose them to knowledge of the harm they've done. Through control of the education system they've created a mutant clone of themselves, freed of all past prejudices except the prejudice that they know better, even about the lives or people radically different from them.

Hey, I don't mind going to an internment camp if it means the taxi medallion monopoly continues.
Sometimes I wonder about the core commitments of America's progressive left
Huh, that's strange, I myself have never wondered about what they want, they've left it right out in the open to see.
What, you think they're liberals? Hahahaaha.
Well, they still are very liberal with other people's money..
Classically liberal or progressive liberal?!
"tends to be either rejected or ignored by most elites in America"
Hooray, I am elite!
I don't suppose these assholes know/care that uber is great (cheap and safe) for poor/working class people who live in questionable neighborhoods. It really is amazing to me how everything the compassionate left is in favor of hurts the people they purport to help.
The compassionate left is paving the road to hell with their good intentions.
Im not sure they are about good intentions
For the most part they do. They want to make the world a wonderful place by stamping out greed and self interest, creating an egalitarian world where we all share and hold hands, and anyone who doesn't like it is taken out back and put down like a dog.
See i dont think they even have good intentions. They hate themselves and project it onto the world. They are control freaks
I don't know about hating themselves, but yeah they are indeed control freaks. Like I always say, freedom to them means asking permission and obeying orders. To them people need to be controlled for their own good. Otherwise they will not live their lives in a correct manner. They need an all-powerful government to be their parent during their adult lives. That's why people on the left like to mockingly compare libertarians to rebellious teenagers. They truly feel that government is their/our parent, and is only looking out for the best.
They have to hate themselves. They have to be constantly miserable is my only explanation. happy people do not have a desire to control others.
There are times i would like to sue Salon for profiting off of and exploiting the leftist misery and low self esteem
Conservatives want government to be their daddy.
Progressives want government to be their mommy.
Libertarians want government to treat adults like adults.
Yep. Hate themselves and so they identify with a cause, to be able to forget their shit individual persona. If they weren't progs, they would be Nazis or Trumpists or Islamists.
But Barack and Hillary and Bernie say nice things about the poor. What more help could the poor possibly need?
Sometimes I wonder about the core commitments of America's progressive left. I really do.
That's easy. Their dream is an overbearing totalitarian state the requires one ask permission or be acting on orders before doing anything except getting an abortion.
They're going to have to come up with a new anthem, Deutschland ? Alles?
"Deutschland Gleich Alle Anderen..."
Lol
Yeah, because driving an automobile is so complicated that nobody can do it without government oversight (i.e. oversight by people who don't drive their own cars).
"Those who can, do.. and those who can't, teach"
Those that can't teach, teach gym!
Those that can't teach gym, become President!
Those that can't teach, teach gym!
AND Driver's Ed.
Can folks stop saying that the left is about good intentions!
What they want is an egalitarian society where everyone is equal while they get to form a noble aristocracy. It is all about desires to control.
Equally poor. They want an equally poor society of unarmed peasants who they can easily control. While they themselves live like royalty.
Pretty much what you said.
Some of the useful idiots do actually have good intentions, they're just too stupid to know they're being played.
I liked the suggestion i saw on here awhile back is when they hoot and holler about the min wage, ask the prog what they make and then propose that as the min wage. Then you will see how devoted to equality they are
Like with them saying people should pay more taxes. They don't mean themselves, they mean other people.
"Some of the useful idiots do actually have good intentions delusions that they too will live amongst the aristocracy, they're just too stupid to know they're being played stupid.
Good correction.
It's like Tony and the other's who want the government to have the power to just murder people they don't like. They never think that power could be used on them also.
While market forces do have a logic and power of their own, they are neither irrefutable nor divine.
What does this mean? It's like these people don't understand that markets don't really exist, the term is just an abstraction of people cooperating. Come to think of it, they absolutely don't understand. These people are animists, after all. Violence is the only thing they understand.
yea that makes no sense. Why does something have to divine in order for it to be valid?
Because they fucking love science...that doesn't quite work, does it?
There is no cooperation. There is only force. If you take a job it is because you are forced to. You need to eat, right? So you are forced to work so you can eat. If you buy a product it is because you were forced to. You either need it to live, or were forced by advertising or some other pressure. From that perspective nothing is voluntary, and everything is force. Add to that false premise the idea that government is us and businesses are them, and now you've got a choice between being force to do things by us or by them. Of course you choose us. And if it is us that is forcing, then it isn't really force. It's voluntary. You can't force yourself, can you? So government force is not really force, and any cooperative, voluntary action that happens without permission or orders from government is tyranny.
If you buy a product it is because you were forced to.
You mean like health insurance?
No, because the government is making everybody buy health insurance and We are the government, therefore we're cool with it.
Health insurance is voluntary because government says we all need to do it, and anyone who does not buy it is forcing costs onto everyone else and therefore a bad person.
While market forces central planning does have a logic and power of its own, it is neither irrefutable nor divine.
Makes more sense.
While progressivism doesnt have a logic but a power of its own, it is neither irrefutable nor divine
There is a logic to the market process, but the results of the process don't need to be taken for granted or upheld as sacrosanct.
you know who else just followed orders?
oh, wait, it was these guys. never mind.
Just went through the Balko Facebook post. Salon has written 237 articles about libertarians/libertarianism. That's not just obsessed, that's hearing voices level.
They dont like people who question their authority
They love a good libertarian strawman argument. It's their favorite topic.
I wonder if it is not rip on libertarianism per say but rather they do to keep the bees from leaving the hive so to speak by fear of being guilted or shamed for embracing libertarianism
Part of it. When you can't defend your own ideals, demonize everyone elses'
Yeah I suspect they're pants-shitting terrified of libertarianism.
As my buddy said, they have to justify their love of big gov and cant use the strawman of social issues as a distraction
Explain to them that libertarianism is the sharing economy writ large. They'll instantly drop their love of the sharing economy.
When I post on other sites where there is about an equal mix of conservatives and proggies and a few random libertarians, the most common response I get from either progs or cons, both of whom always at first mistake me for one of the other, is 'Your guy Rand Paul will never be president'! That is somehow supposed to convince me that I've made a mistake for being libertarian. You know, my team can't win. It's all about being on the winning team, that's all that matters. Who cares if the prize is a big pile of shit, winning is all that matters.
Yeah, some of my old law school classmates that I still talk to give me shit like that, too. Never mind that Paul, though libertarian-leaning, is a Republican, and receives ardent criticism from actual libertarians whenever deserved.
When I think about it, I realize that this behavior is driven, in part, by their own obsession with political personalities and TEAM BLUE, rather than adherence to foundational principles. Yeah, Barry is in the White House starting illegal wars and assassinating American citizens and ignoring pretty much every word of the Bill of Rights, but ZOMG he's sooo cool and he's a Democrat so Yay!
MY MOM!
Sorry, I thought this was a Regular Show reference.
What wonderful quality of the Germans is it that allowed them to happily succeed, where Americans have sadly failed?
Their wonderful ability to goose-step?
"Don't mention the war!"
"I drove for Uber and I was terrible at driving for Uber, therefore nobody should be able to drive for Uber because they'll be bad at it too! It's for rich women and geezers!"
Paging Derpetologist.
Derpetologist, please report to the decompression chamber.
95% of the UBER drivers I've met are immigrants looking to earn wages.
I, for one, am shocked that Uber is forcing havurah to be an Uber driver against her will!
Living w?ge!
when riders failed to appear when I showed up
Aren't you supposed to rate the riders poorly then? And aren't you supposed to have a valid reason for the poor rating?
And audit your trips? My gosh, it's like a real business! How discriminatory!
Rules.
Inspiring, isn't it?
I think there are two kinds of people in this world:
People who look at their middle school teachers and think, "Wow! Rules! I want to make them, too!"
And everyone else.
Uber requires the driver to Lie in the event of accident as the driver's policy won't cover the accident if the car is used for hire.
Uber requires the passengers to Lie in the event of accident as the driver's policy won't cover the accident if the car is used for hire.
Uber passengers and drivers do this at their own risk. That's why it's cheaper. In NYC alone, a Taxi-Limosine insurance policy is over $6,000. That's $500 per month extra in an Uber driver's pocket. Not too shabby, they can actually make a car payment with that money.
Uber does claim that they will cover in the event insurance doesn't. But I don't know details or heard of people in Uber accidents. I'll google it and get back to you guys.
In short, if you want to pay less by traveling in unregulated cars, people can chose this. However, they can't come crawling to me, the taxpayer, when they become hurt or disabled. They can take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY at that point.
How can Uber require a driver, or ESPECIALLY a passenger, to lie about anything? And OH NO!! "PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because libertarians hate that concept.
However, they can't come crawling to me, the taxpayer, when they become hurt or disabled. They can take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY at that point.
taxpayer. good one la pinga.
Nothing you are saying is true. Uber provides insurance. If a ride share driver is involved in an accident, they should provide Uber's insurance (which is on the driver's waybill), not their own insurance.
Basically, you're a liar. Not Uber. and not their drivers or their passengers.
Progressives are all about making you bend over to the government. You seem surprised at this.
