Edward Snowden Joins Twitter, Follows NSA
The world's most famous whistleblowing fugitive makes his social networking debut.
Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor who has been living a fugitive's exile in Russia for the past two years after revealing the shocking extent of mass surveillance the US government had been engaged in for years, has joined Twitter.
This is his first tweet:
Can you hear me now?
— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) September 29, 2015
His account is already adorned with the coveted blue checkmark indicating Twitter has verified this is the real Edward Snowden.
In the past, Snowden had spoken warily of social media, particularly Facebook, which he described as "hostile to privacy." It would be interesting to hear him explain what safeguards Twitter has to prevent the data mining employed by other social networks, but he apparently feels secure enough using Twitter to reach the masses in 140 characters or less that his first (and so far only) follow is the account of his former employer, the NSA.

You are on the EAS twice!
If you post at Reason, you're probably already on so many lists that a few more can't hurt.
So when do I get my honorary subpoena?
I thought the double posts were just a glitch in the Matrix.

STOP THAT
The squirrels have released their brain pods in the final stage of their global coup. We will all be their puppets soon.
Good luck and godspeed to you all.
As a fellow rodent and cousin to the squirrels, we can only surmise that you are somehow in on this. Please empty out your cheeks and prove us wrong.
You guys know you're part of Mr. Lizards plans for their global food supply, right?
I'd say the NSA clicking on "following" the Constitution guarantees some extra scrutiny from Overlord Snowden.

Serious question: how does Twitter actually verify someone's identity? Especially someone who is famous/infamous and in protective custody in Russia?
Actual person behind Snowden account
You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?
*shakes magic eight ball*
Signs point to yes
Can't it be her instead?
If you're lucky, it might be her.
Uh...can we substitute her?
You'll just get this guy in drag
Are you trying to ruin my morning?!?
Morning's over man. Time to face reality.
Not for me, dude!
Actual person behind Snowden account
Crusty probably would.
How does Twitter actually verify someone's identity?
Even after that smart ass response, I still have no idea either.
Because Putin said so silly!
Knock it off!
/every mother everywhere
What if the NSA created a fake Snowden twitter and strong-armed twitter into giving it the blue checkmark so that they can weed out undesirables?
No. That would actually be way too smart for the NSA.
If that was the case, then I'd say clicking "follow" on Snowden guarantees some extra automated scrutiny from our digital overlords.
If that was the case, it'd be pretty funny when they do spring the trap and it turns out every single follower is actually an agent of the CIA or FBI.
Like a drug bust where everyone involved is either an undercover agent or an informer!
Exactly. It'll be The Man Who Was Thursday all over again.
That book was a nightmare.
Something something "follow" something something digital overlords.
Here's Snowden's second tweet: miko grimes can go blacklivesmatter on my expat face any day lol #tapdatazz
Fun first tweet, but he just had to go with the self-important profile pic. What a serious thinker!
Okay, so Ahmed Mohammad is now taking selfies with the prime minister of Turkey and is planning on going on a vacation to Qatar which is sponsored by the Qatari government, specifically by an organization founded by Al Jazeera creator Sheikh bin Al Thani.
Now, maybe I'm missing something here, but where the fuck are this kid's parents? If you're upset because your kid was unfairly treated by American cops and you think his civil rights were violated, why would you think it's a good idea to let your kid pal around with horrible human rights abusers like Turkey's PM or pretty much anyone involved in the governing of Qatar?
Murderers and tyrants are using this kid as a PR opportunity and his parents apparently see no problem with this.
"The boy needs his clock-in-a-box "to take to the President"
OMG WHY ARE THEY FREAKING OUT THAT HE HAS IT STRAPPED TO HIS CHEST UNDER HIS COAT ITS LIKE ISLAMOPHOBIC TO THE EXTREME QUICK SEND HIM TO DISNEYLAND AND GIVE HIM A SCHOLARSHIP TO NASA
"Murderers and tyrants are using this kid as a PR opportunity and his parents apparently see no problem with this."
Everything's going even better than they planned. The dad probably just wanted his15 minutes of fame and a soapbox to bitch from. Now he's got that plus how many free vacations?
At first I pooh-poohed the theories that this was somehow planned, but there is a lot of smoke here.
Mark Cuban said he called the kid and could hear him being fed answers by his sister.
The sister just so happened to have been accused of a bomb threat years earlier and had been suspended from school. So you have one girl who was accused of a bomb threat coaching her brother when he's trying to answer questions regarding the exact same thing happening to him. That is awfully suspicious.
That clock absolutely could have been confused for a bomb and Ahmed was apparently very evasive with the teacher and wouldn't say what was going on when the clock went off during class. We also don't know what he did because the police reports can't be released because he's a juvenile.
I don't want to assume this was a setup, but we don't know what he actually said or did on the scene. All that's come out are his family's claims and they won't allow any information about the arrest to be released. And now he's hanging out with Islamic despots and jetting off to Arabic slave societies like Qatar.
At the very least his family is behaving suspiciously.
I can easily believe it was all a ploy.
It's still ridiculous and shameful that the school and cops fell for it and reacted as they did.
I agree. I just find it very strange that the same thing happened to his sister, that she's feeding him lines when he's getting asked questions, etc. Meanwhile, his dad ran for president in Sudan while promising to get America to life sanctions on the country that were put in place because they were supporting terrorists who also debated a pastor who wanted to burn a Koran. Now, in fairness the dad also wanted to repeal laws making it illegal to convert from Islam, so it's not like he's an uber-crazy militant Islamist and I don't think the dad is really a bad guy looking at what he was running on. I'm just saying he's a political activist who had one of his kids accused of a bomb threat and then just so happened to have another of his kids accused of a hoax bomb in a highly public and noticeable fashion.
The family is actually Sufi, so they're fairly moderate Muslims. That still doesn't rule out the possibility of a put on and there are enough suspicious aspects of this story that we shouldn't make assumptions either way.
Dad was bitching the other day that Ahmed was going through a nervous breakdown or something. The next day we see Ahmed schmoozing with pols in NYC.
OMG He's posing in pictures with the PM of a NATO country!!!!!!!!
ISIS PLANT CONFIRMED!
He's hanging out with political figures from Qatar. That is a terrible country with a terrible human rights record. Do you really not see an issue with this kid's parents letting him get used for PR by a society that literally practices modern day slavery? If you're complaining about your kid having his civil rights violated, shouldn't you avoid sending him off to be given accolades by some of the worst civil rights abusers on the planet?
Nice strawman. No one ever said the kid is a terrorist. What I'm saying is that his dad's a political activist and his sister was accused of a bomb threat when she was 14 and we have no information about what actually occurred because it's been swept away in service to a narrative put out by his family and the Council on American and Islamic Relations.
I don't like Islam, so I'm sure my own biases are partially related to why alarm bells are going off for me and not for you. However, there are legitimate questions here which I'd like answered and I also think it's probably a bad idea for anyone to hang out with some of the worst tyrants on the planet, such as the terrorism supporters in the Qatari government.
I'm pretty sure one school principal and 3 or 4 cops did.
Or at least intimated as much
Jus' sayin'
BO considers the FT Hood guy to be something different than a terrorist, so why not?
Very bluntly none of what the critics are alleging about his family in any way whatsomotherfuckingever justifies the fact that the school called the cops and the cops deciding to arrest him.
And the hyperventilate over it strikes me as very silly.
Shall we hyperventilate about the fact that Rosa Parks didn't spontaneously decide to get arrested but that the whole thing was a consciously planned operation by anti-segregation activists?
Jesus Christ! If he had had a photo op with Obama would you be freaking out about what the parents were thinking allowing him to be used as a propaganda device by one of the worst human rights abusers on the planet?
Because I can guarantee Obama with his policy of extrajudicial killings that his minions call "signature strikes" deserves to be right up there on the A list of human rights abusers.
I presume daddy, who keeps running for President of Sudan because he wants to go back and fix the place (at least that's what he claims) is trying to get support from prominent Muslim state leaders to bankroll or otherwise support his political goals.
But so what?!? Whether or not the kid hoped to get publicity or not has absolutely no impact on the idiocy of what he became famous for.
"none of what the critics are alleging about his family in any way whatsomotherfuckingever justifies the fact that the school called the cops and the cops deciding to arrest him.'
No one anywhere said that his arrest was justified.
The fact is that kids get arrested all the time for even-less stupid-and-intentionally-inflammatory shit. And just because he's not the first "victim" of Zero Tolerance doesn't make him less of one...
...but the thing that people are completely misconstruing in the media, is the pretense that he's a SPECIAL victim because our schools (rather than just being ridiculously authoritarian to everyone) are somehow extra-Islamophobic because Texas Racism.
Just because the kid was arrested doesn't make him a saint.
-Kid does stupid prank
-Stupid School has him arrested
-stupid media blows shit out of proportion
none of the above are the 'good guys'. none of the above makes his stupid prank any less wildly stupid
...and *possibly* intentional. Though i have no interest in siding with the people claiming certainty on that last point.
Sorry - link of other examples of Zero Tolerance which didn't result in Presidential Invitations or Space-Camp Vacations.
Why would a kid deciding to prank a bunch of public officials not be a good guy?
"Why would a kid deciding to prank a bunch of public officials not be a good guy?"
Depends on the purpose of the "prank", obviously, and the willingness to admit your intent after the fact.
You're not really familiar with the concept of humor, are you?
Me?
for the record, my humor glands were removed as a child, but thank you very much for othering-me and humor-shaming me in a public place. You just made my Tumblr.
Where did I say it did? Point me to the phantom quote you're now arguing against.
Having a photo op with your own nation's president is not the same thing as flying to Qatar, a nation with one of the worst human rights records on the planet, that practices modern day slavery, and plans to screen world cup guests to see if they're gay so they can be denied access to the country. These are very, very bad people and no responsible parent should want their child associating with them.
Question: Would you let your kid hang out with tyrants from gulf Arab states? If not, why not?
I wouldn't. Nor would I allow him to hang out with the President of the Unites States.
Nor would I run for elected office. Thus proving that I am a much more moral person than Ron Paul and Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed.
Okay. So what about criticizing his parents for letting him hang out with Qatari despots made you this mad?
I am irritated, because in my experience, the people harping about his parents and whether or not he actually made the device etc. are doing so as an apologia for his unjustified arrest.
Otherwise, why even give a shit?
" the people harping about his parents and whether or not he actually made the device etc. are doing so as an apologia for his unjustified arrest."
some are. some aren't.
which is exactly why i made my point above about "not aiming to side myself with conspiracy mongers"
The move you're making here is exactly the same dumb shit millions of others are = Making the kid into a "Good Guy" because a bunch of mouthbreathing idiots think he's an Al Qaeda plant.
He's not a good guy because morons hate him.
He's not a bad guy just because liberals adore him.
The evidence shows he is a fraud, at least as far as his electronics-wizardry goes. and that there's plenty to suggest his "project" wasn't mistaken for a bomb purely because Texas schools are full of racist rednecks... and there's a past record of his family members making a stink about all-muslims being treated like "bombers"
to repeat =
-kid does stupid prank
-school stupidly over-reacts (as expected) to stupid prank
-media stupidly lionizes pranker while pranker makes bank out of victim-status
There are no good guys here.
I had to look that up and found this:
"Hosts of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar, along with many other Gulf states, will employ airport technology to detect homosexual people and prevent them from entering the country, according to LGBT Weekly."
Lolwut?
Finally! REAL GAYDAR
Obviously, their gaydar technology is highly advanced.
Facial scanners hooked up to Facebook?
I'm perfectly comfortable with the general idea that the kid intentionally went out of his way to create a situation where he could be "victimized"
its not at all implausible.
Even if not = even the obvious, less-devious interpretation is still not at all that generous to him
- Kid engages in stupid prank
- school hysterically over-reacts to stupid prank
- nation rushes to lionize kid, ignoring stupid prank, because desperate need for Anti-Islamophobia signalling
- much stupidity ensues
The people trying to make him out as some kind of misunderstood child-genius are completely full of shit. I'll start to buy that when you show me one of his electronics projects that aren't simply commercial-products removed from their cases and put in a different box. And then you're going to have to explain why someone that "clever" did something this stupid, knowing that texas schools would freak the fuck out.
The US has military bases in Qatar.
To be fair, the U.S. has military bases in most of the countries of Earth.
Yup, he is so darn American now, and on the other side of the spectrum the Davis woman received an award from god or his immediate recipients of holy plaques. Fame, fame, fame...love Bowie .
Most people didn't see a problem when Obama did the same thing.
Oh come on, it's just a little Arabic language immersion. The field trip to Pakistan is optional.
"what safeguards Twitter has to prevent the data mining employed by other social networks'"
Perhaps it is the "bottomless pit of human stupidity"-part that prevents Twitter from being used deviously by Institutions.
Fanfiction.net was the previous reigning bottomless pit of human stupidity, but Twitter made it up on volume.
You can't fap to twitter.
as far as i know. God i'm sure someone has tried.
