      Sounds like she should be mad at the legions of social justice advocates for publishing something just because he was a supposed minority, if that's really what she's concenrend about. But judging by her use of terms like "cultural appropriation" and "from a position of privilege", I'd say she is precisely to blame for the bigotry of low expectations that she believes is cheapening "her" minority accomplishments.

      Yet I'm sure these same people applauded the female writers of the past (George Eliot, A. M. Barnard, etc.) who used men's names to get published. It's unfortunate that writers still need to assume pen names to get recognition. But it also exposes the Progressive tendency for retribution. Women and minorities had a hard time getting published in the past, so of course they have to silence the voices of today's white men who had no hand in past discriminations. But that doesn't matter. There was an in justice and someone has to pay!

      Alexie explained that he read submissions blind, to the extent that he could. He didn't look up authors to learn more about them or their past work.
      
      "Each poem will stand or fall on its own merits," went one of his 11 rules for reading.
      
      And he acknowledged that he was "more amenable" to the poem because he thought its author was Chinese American. There was nothing explicitly culturally Chinese about the poem ? indeed, it seems obsessed with imagery from Western culture ? but that only made it more interesting to Alexie.

        Seems like Victoria Chang shouldn't be mad at the author for "impl[ying] that minorities are published because we're minorities, not because of our work." She should be mad at the publisher, who said exactly that.

I wanted to stop. I offered them peace. I nearly retired the feature. And what do I get in return? Two idiotic Trump articles, one of which is by Dalmia Herself. Then Roby trolls in alt-text again. All right then, at least for this week, Accomplished Female Athletes of Eastern And Central Europe is still on. And restrictions are off now - all sports are in play, and definition of "accomplished" has been lowered to "put on uniform and competed in one international event at some point."
That said, today's entry, Darya Klishina is a long jumper who won three Junion championships before she was 18, as well as two European Championship (plus an Under-23 Championship) as well as setting Russian youth jump record. She also works as a model for Nike and Seiko.

        Is was legal forever as many coaches have attested to, and the rule book backs up. Goodell tried to make it illegal through a memo in 2006, or so he claims but the memo doesn't really say that, nor can rules be passed through memo.
        
        In actuality it seems to have become illegal when the Patriots did it to Goodell's previous employer the Jets, despite it being acceptable when the Jets taped the Patriots their previous game the season prior.

        Rugby Union - at least in the Southern Hemisphere - really appears to take the issue seriously. On the other hand, they try to whisk the guys to the locker room for a while while they do the protocol. No real idea what they're doing in there. Not a lot of transparency.
        
        The last couple of weeks, though, I've seen at least two, possibly three guys get carted off during ITM Cup games due to head injury. The issue seems more maturely dealt with overall though, by quite some way.
        
        Soccer has some way to go, but there's quite a bit more talk about it. Most importantly, it's moved on from the idea of mandating those retarded headbands and/or helmets, which was an abomination that was gaining far too much traction. On the other hand, they're talking about banning heading below a certain age altogether, which WILL have unintended consequences for sure (particularly since heading isn't even in the top 5 of reasons for concussion in soccer).
        
        If Taylor Twellman had his way, he'd get shit done now. He was nearly apoplectic during the WC in Brazil when a couple of guys appeared to have no idea where they were and then ended up back in the game within minutes. He had his career ended by multiple concussions, so he's a bit...of an advocate.

        I got a concussion (I had a headache for weeks) when I missed time a goalie kick. Rather than hit my forehead (the proper way) it hit the top of my head. It was like getting hit by a brick.

        I've headed many a punt, and those are notoriously hard to line up even uncontested. As a result, I've taken more than a few "sub-optimally", but never had a concussion (that I'm aware of). I probably had a couple due to ground and elbow/head clashes, but nothing really bad.

Pen names, as some on Twitter pointed out, have long been a staple of the literary world. And there are plenty of cases in which initials or a pseudonym have worked in the opposite direction ? most often for women like Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot), Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) and Joanne Rowling (J.K. Rowling), who thought they would be taken more seriously or better reach their target demographic if they didn't appear to be female.

    There is no "publishing industry" for poetry. Poetry probably makes less money than the artisanal toothpick industry, and even professional poets (read: teachers) are lucky to sell more than a few thousand copies of any given work, probably half of which is being purchased by friends and family, if not the poet himself.
    
    This is what happens when the greatest form of human art sells its soul to become a subsidiary of a 19th-century political philosophy. When's the last time you met a literary type who wasn't a socialist of some stripe, nevermind a classical liberal?
    
    The left has done a fantastic job weeding ideological diversity out of poetry and "serious" literature and creating a tedious monoculture filled with obscure and unpopular art, and the result is that no one outside their incestuous social cicles buy any of their work.

        Bardic culture and the rise of the oral epic (as opposed to the epic oral, which certainly has its place) is much more sophisticated than the material that's cranked out for four minutes at a time on the radio. Not that popular music is bad, just more convenient in the same way that microwave burritos are more convenient.
        
        The old epics like Beowulf and the Iliad are probably more like modern movies or novels. There was no doubt a lot of crap being cranked out three millennia ago, but the ones that survived are the cream of the crop. Kind of like how there are hundreds of crappy 1930s movies that no one watches, but everyone knows Casablanca.
        
        As for the decline of poetry, I blame Hegel. Like many other disciplines (looking at you, economics), literature made a dramatic shift toward becoming technical, obtuse, and elitist in the first half of the 20th century, and that's where it's remained. Now that no one gives a damn about poetry anymore, it's free to serve as watered-down cultural marxism for the ten thousand or so people who actually read modern English-language poetry.

So, here's is my review of the latest Iron Maiden album copied from ane earlier thread.

[It's] OK. It's a bit hit or miss (more hitty than missy), although I've noticed that with Maiden, I usually start out thinking "meh" and it takes me a few months before I really start enjoying a new album.

I think age is catching up with them, Bruce particularly. The songs are crafted to allow him to rest a bit here and there - understandable given that a couple of years ago surgeons were cutting tumors out of his throat!

The second CD is much stronger than the first. The first song is a bit WTF - I just don't think of Mexican music when I envision death.

The album is full of experiments like that. If you want a clone of Powerslave or A Matter of Life and Death, you will be disappointed. But, their musical genius shows through again and again, and I recommend getting the album if you are willing to take the misses for the hits.

Overall, I liked it. I'm diving back in for a second listen now.

    The Sci. Fi. author one was actually to mock a vanity press. The vanity press claimed to have standards so they purposefully made a terrible book with no reason to be published and actually got accepted. Here is a verbatim section from the first chapter:

        I think the latest version was supposed to retool how big of a resource hog it is. I've been having some odd problems with FF and Google sites recently (gMaps won't show the actual map tiles so I get a black window with the search box and zoom bar) and it's driving me crazy having to kill the process and switch over to chrome to get directions.

        Wasn't I recommending it for a very specific reason? I think the main differences from Chrome are that Dragon doesn't phone home to Google, uses Comodo's DNS and has a master password option for protecting saved log in information.
        
        I think it was that someone wanted to use Reasonable but wouldn't use a browser that left saved passwords as Open as Chrome does.

        Chrome and Firefox both have 6-week major release cycles, with urgent bug and security updates issued frequently in the interim. The difference is actually in interface; when Chrome downloads an update, it turns the hamburger menu orange without otherwise alerting you whereas Firefox displays an overt alert.
        
        Personally I prefer the latter for security, since browser vulnerabilities begin being exploited very rapidly (if they were not already in use prior to the update, which is sometimes the case) so I want an overt notification. My assumption, though, is that the Chrome team has data suggesting that most people are not nerds like me who leave their browsers open for days on end and will hence naturally restart their browsers without prompt.

        What the hell do you do to get that to happen? FF works fine leaving it open with many tabs (though that does consume quite a bit of memory over time). I've only seen about 3 crashes in as many years, and I think that's all on Windows. My Linux boxes have no problem.
        
        Even IceWeasel on my way, way, way underpowered, ancient laptop that I'm typing on now has been nearly perfect going on months of uptime.

I get the blue ring, a sound almost like it's trying to spin the (empty) DVD drive, and the (Not Responding) message for several seconds before it shakes out of its stupor and lets me move on.

        Sounds like you have an outdated browser. Stuck javascript scripts will make your processor go apeshit (the noise you hear is either your CPU PWM fan going all max speed on you, or your GPU fan(s) desperately trying to cool something).

Good news for Zach Anderson, the teen sentenced to life on the sex offender registry for having sex with a girl who claimed to be 17.

His sentence, now vacated while a new sentencing process is started, was 25 years on the registry. Ed is still working on that learning how to read thing.

Anderson was 19 at the time of the incident and the girl was 14... not even close to the age she supposedly claimed to be (which wouldn't, and can't, be allowed as a defense anyway as it can always be feigned). The judge also noted that she did not look older than her age.

    Yeah. Yesterday was insane at the beach. Hot, so we get the inner city "baggy jeans at the beach" crowd coming down to cool off. Combine that that with the 3 tropical cyclones that were in the Pacific basin last week, and bad things happen. Manhattan was 6-8 foot surf, but Newport was 10-15. I think they had something like 3500 rescues down there this weekend.
