Freddie Gray Protests Nationwide, No New Trial for Ross Ulbricht, Bernie Sanders Running for President: A.M. Links

-
@justin_fenton/Twitter Protests were held in New York, Boston, and elsewhere over the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, where police freed nearly 100 people held since Monday without charge after a series of habeas corpus petitions. Among the buildings destroyed Monday night was the bodega where Omar Little was shot on The Wire.
- A judge denied a motion for a new trial by Ross Ulbricht, convicted of charges related to the operation of Silk Road.
- The Clinton Foundation reportedly failed to release the names of 1,100 foreign donors as it promised to the Obama White House.
- As expected, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced he would seek the Democratic nomination for president.
- The Republican Party in Nevada may be changing its presidential primary process in an effort to make it more difficult for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to win.
- The new king of Saudi Arabia has broken with tradition and named his nephew, not a younger brother, as his successor.

49) Ach. Despair. A couple times a year my local delegate to the Virginia House of Delegates (Virginia's lower house) sends out a constituent survey. Here are the results to the latest one. This district covers Fairfax City. The results to the marijuana questions are heartening and the fracking questions aren't bad, but other than that it's awful. The overwhelming support for more regulation of gun rights, expanding Medicaid, raising the state minimum wage, taxing e-cigarettes. Guh. Maybe it's because I have so many military vets as neighbors, but I've always had the impression the city was fairly evenly divided along liberal/conservative lines, with a strong libertarian contingent due to nearby George Mason University. I guess vets aren't as conservative as I thought. Ugghh.
But hey, I'm first, so things can't be that bad.
DQ. First with a broken link.
Oh geez. Try this.
Fuck it:
http://www.davidbulova.com/blo.....ey-results
I'm doubting that this is a 'scientific' survey. You're only getting people who either respond to senders, or ain't telling someone to fuck off when they call the home to ask questions.
And also... Fairfax is part of the NOVA influence of suck.
If you think fairfax is bad come up to the people's republic of arlington. Where they allow you to get 30 dollar registration stickers instead of paying property taxes if you live in certain(spanish) neighborhoods to save you the trouble of being unable to register your car in the state of va because of your questionable legal status.
Huh. I'd think they wouldn't care who registers a car as long as they pay. I may be misunderstanding.
nope. Most places you rent from require you to either be registered in the county to get a permit or get this pass.
*parking permit, it truly is something to behold. It makes sense to a certain degree you wanna bring in people, and make some revenue off them.
I just can't believe the DMV allows this to happen.
Oh, parking permit. I know nothing of parking permits, living in an area blessed with an abundance of parking spaces and private driveways.
smart man, I can't seem to convince my GF that that is the way to go. She likes the nightlife, I like to get hammered on bourbon and watch sports, which I can do at home.
Hello.
"The Clinton Foundation reportedly failed to release the names of 1,100 foreign donors as it promised to the Obama White House."
Yea, yea, blah, blah, yawn, yawn. Blame Canada. Blame Rufus. I get it. Can we move past this?
You misread.
We all misread.
Vets aren't as libertarian as you'd think.
What do you have against animal docs, pal?
Fairfax was solidly "red" when I grew up there (Arlington was always "The People's Republic") and I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say upwards of 40% of the families in our part of it were military. It's now solidly blue. Part of that is probably attributable to urban sprawl and increased home prices but more than anything it's the growth in federal spending. So many federal contractors dependent on the tit of mother government.
It's almost due to the federal contractors and federal employees, who will vote a straight blue ticket because they will never cut anything. Honestly though can't really blame them.
Not the ones in Fairfax. They're all living on the government's teat. I don't miss living in Fairfax County.

Post columnist going FULL APARTHEID in an article on a woman actually trying to be a parent:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....ack-child/
Winning quote?
"He gave me eye contact," Toya Graham told CBS News. "And at that point, you know, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that ? that's my only son and at the end of the day, I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray. Is he the perfect boy? No he's not, but he's mine."
In other words, Graham's message to America is: I will teach my black son not to resist white supremacy so he can live.
*sigh*...Jesus wept....
god I hate you. I think I will financially bankrupt you and steal my wife and my kid back now.
...for there were no more worlds to conquer.
I like this one:
Tell that to my great grandfather who beat his (white) grandchildren with a fire poker. Tell that to the Africans who discipline their kids.
When your kids are out of line, you do what is necessary to get them under control before they or someone else gets hurt. Throwing rocks at cops isn't going to solve their problems.
Bah. Back in the day you had to see Italian mothers beat the crap out of their kids - in public. Especially in grocery stores. Things of beauty.
Also, I don't get what the problem with this mother is. She did right to slap him around a bit. Kids don't get that enough. I remember when my father kicked me in the ass for simply badgering him about something as he BBQed. I knew my limits from that point forward.
No no no no.... only black people beat their kids and it's because slave culture
White supremacy - is there anything it can't do?
knock down Jews and Asians?
Yeah, that's stupid. Beating your children is a long standing tradition in most cultures. I think it is mostly a good thing that it has become much less common and generally less severe when it is used. But it probably has its place. And getting your son to stop being violent and destructive so that he won't hurt people or get killed himself is probably one of those places.
That wasn't even a real, physical, beating. It was a public shaming.
Yeah, do you imagine that this guy tells his buddies "My mother beat the shit out of me"? Somehow I doubt it.
True story when I worked construction when I was in my teens:
A father and son were working on site (a house) and the kid did something wrong. The father whacked him on the side of the arm with a 2x4. WHAP! Kid yelled, 'PA!' The father in broken Italian, English AND French yelled back 'USE THE LEVEL!'
When I die and the flashbacks come that will be one of them.
Oh, the swear words were omitted on my part.
I got smacked on a few occasions. One for hitting my sister (albeit accidentally), one for holding the shotgun the wrong way on a hunting trip, and one or two others.
Thing is, I knew why I was getting smacked. And I remembered it. I knew exactly where my gun was pointed at all times after that incident.
holding the shotgun the wrong way
Ugh, I took my son to another house to play with another kid this past weekend.
I got there and the dad asked if it was ok for the kids to shoot bb guns unsupervised - while at the same time I saw the other kid handling the bb gun in a way that violated almost every safety rule I know of.
I had to say no.
I spanked my son once.
He was about 2 and was playing with blocks with another boy his age. For no apparent reason, he picked up a block and threw it at the other kid from point blank range - hitting him square in the nose.
I didn't even think, just reacted. I picked him up, put him over my knee and swatted him three times and then put him in the customary time-out.
His mom (now my ex) was shocked as was the other mom but it happened so fast they had nothing to say. The other dad pulled me aside and said thanks, and awesome - he'd never attempt that in front of his wife.
My kid never did it again.
haha so baltimore has a mostly black police force, and mostly black leadership in the city, but still this is white peoples fault
baltimore has a mostly black police force
There's no way this is true. Only a quarter of BCPD officers even live in the city. Most cops I ran into there seemed to be white guys who lived in Pennsylvania.
Here is a big part of the problem. Of course you are going to have abusive cops when none of them LIVE IN THE FUCKING COMMUNITY THEY ARE POLICING. We change that dynamic and a lot of the other stuff falls into line...
You can have civil rights or you can have property rights. You can't have both.
As long as I have gun rights, I can take care of the other two if I have to.

The cop lied on the report? I'm shocked. Really. Also, it says he quit. Not that he was fired. Why would he be fired? He showed depraved indifference. That makes him perfect for the job.
Look. Assessed the situation and calculated which act would get him home safely.
Well, it's already proven that cops have no obligation to actually protect people, and that was in a similar case to this (Castle Rock v. Gonzalez, where the cops ignored a restraining order, leading to a woman's murder). Why would he be punished? I'm even surprised he quit.
Likely he was offered a better paying position on another force.
Don't most states have a legal requirement that more or less means the police are obliged to arrest someone when there is a domestic violence call?
A report has to be made - and there is usually a lot of pressure to slap the cuffs n someone.
I don't know about most states, but at least some do, unfortunately. If I say you hit me, there has to be some evidence that you did in fact commit assault and battery against me - if your wife says you hit her, you're going to jail no matter how loudly you protest that she's lying and there's no evidence whatsoever that you hit her. I don't know of many other crimes you can be arrested for simply on someone's allegation with absolutely no corroborating evidence.
He showed depraved indifference. That makes him perfect for the job.
I may be channeling Dunphy here, but if the story were "Cop arrests a guy for not taking meds" would you be okay with that?
That's a good point, actually.
I would be outraged if the wife called the cops and the cops showed up and shot the dog, tazed the wife and flash-banged the kids, but I don't really see the outrage here. The cop made a judgement call as to whether or not the guy needed taken in and he guessed wrong. How many people did this cop not arrest that later killed their wives? And now how many cops on this force are from here on out going to make an arrest every goddamn time they get called out over every little petty bit of bullshit just to cover their ass?

What the fuck is the school-to-prison pipeline?
It's like keystone, but for thugs.
The school-to-pipeline starts with broken families which were made possible by generous government welfare. Never mind that the need for welfare happened because the government put in minimum wage laws, forced union membership, and all sorts of regulations to kill employment.
Add to that government-run schools with unionized government teachers who couldn't care less what their students do and yet get rated effective in most cases.
Throw in the government-declared drug war, and government-armed and unionized police, three-stike laws, and voila! You get a school-to-prison pipeline!
But it's all the fault of heartless conservatives and rabid frothing-at-the-mouth free market fundamentalist libertarians.
No conservatives equals no WOD.
No conservatives equals no two-tiered justice system that features qualified immunity for cops and absolute immunity for judges and prosecutors.
No conservatives equals no maintenance of public employee unions.
No conservatives equals no income tax.
No conservatives equals no IRS or FBI or CIA or DEA.
No conservatives equals no Dept. of Education (tip to Ronnie "the FBI snitch" Reagan).
No conservatives equals no asset forfeiture.
Conservatives have, by and large, bought and defended the primary pillars of progressivism.
You're right on the WoD and cop-immunity.
I don't get your comments on conservative support for government unions, income tax, DoE.
And what is the thing about Reagan being an FBI snitch?
"Progressives make mistakes, and conservatives defend those mistakes".
Injun, what have the conservatives done to destroy public employee unions? Particularly cop unions?
The income tax? You must be kidding, right? How many of the Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush judicial appointees have come to the defense of those who have challenged the income tax? How many of the prosecutors appointed by Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and Bush have declined to prosecute those who challenge the income tax?
The reality is that conservatives can be found mouth firmly enveloping the income tax and the prosecution of those who challenge the IRS.
Reagan was a snitch. Just google Reagan was an FBI snitch or Reagan was an FBI informant.
Scott Walker is a first at attacking government bureaucrat unions. He left police unions alone, and I don't know if that was a tactical move or he is actually an authority lover. Ohio tried getting rid of all public employee unions, and they failed. I don't know if conservatives are slowly waking up and following libertarians on this. I hope they are.
I was not aware of the recent history of the income tax w.r.t conservatives. They sure talk the talk. Again, I hope libertarians have an influence on them if they are not yet for a full repeal of the income tax, and preferably, a repeal of the 16th amendment in its entirety.
Democrats controlled the House for 40 years, during which the drug war only intensified. They even controlled senate and the White House for large portions of that time. They own the drug war just as much as the dipshits in Team Red. Same goes for qualified immunity.

I think the idea is that for a certain segment of students with significant discipline problems, school is like practice for a life spent caught up in the criminal justice system.
It's years and years of authority figures ignoring and thereby giving tacit approval to violent and criminal behavior.
I feel like imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....
The beatings originated with white supremacy, a history of cultural and physical violence that devalues black life at every turn.
Bullshit. They originated with that asteroid impact 65 million years ago.
The thing that is really sick about that is that the person writing it lives a comfortable life and likely has never committed a crime in their lives and doesn't have the balls to do so even if they wanted to. Yet, they are encouraging young black men to go out and commit crimes and risk prison and ruining their life to "resist white supremacy". That is awfully noble of them to expect young black men to die for the cause. If this bastard wants to resist white supremacy, why doesn't he quit his job, go to Baltimore and pick up a brick himself?

Fellow prisoner says that Freddie Gray was intentionally trying to hurt himself
But that won't stop people's protests.
okay, the only people that believe that all work within the police union offices.
The people who work within the police union offices know that every police report is a lie. They also know that the lies will be believed, and that gives them power. It's all about power. The power to lie and be believed. The power to steal, then lie about it, and be believed. The power to kill, then lie about it, and be believed. Power is an end, not a means.
And every conservative I've seen on Twitter. The Lawn & Order crowd is ecstatic over this.
As Popehat said, the same people who believe that believe all the "jailhouse informants" who just happen to hear "spontaneous confessions".
Even if its true, it doesn't matter. The police still did what they did before he was put into the van and still have a duty to ensure he doesn't go crazy and hurt himself. If the police' defense here is "we beat the guy up and threw him in a van and forgot about him allowing him to freak out and kill himself", they have no defense.
Yet we all know that the defense will work just fine.

NASA to crash probe into Uranus Mercury today
Bye, bye, Messenger, and thanks for the memories.
NASA's Messenger spacecraft, which has orbited Mercury for about four years, is expected to crash into the planet closest to the sun Thursday, ending its long and successful mission.
Scientists predict that when it impacts the planet, it will leave a 50-foot-wide crater on its surface.
The "impact will not be in view," Daniel O'Shaughnessy, Messenger systems engineer said during a news conference earlier in April. "It will happen during a planetary occultation, so the spacecraft will pass behind the planet ? out of view of the Earth ? and will just not emerge again."
Mission managers are pretty sure that the spacecraft will slam into the planet near its north pole, and the impact should happen at around 3:30 p.m. EDT Thursday.
Pffft. Anyone can crash into something.
Daniel O'Shaughnessy, Messenger systems engineer
What kind of shirt was he wearing?
Mission managers are pretty sure that the spacecraft will slam into the planet near its north pole, and the impact should happen at around 3:30 p.m. EDT Thursday.
Um, I'm pretty sure Mars does not observe daylight saving time.
That's OK, since they're not crashing the craft into Mars.
Whew. That's a relief.
I listened to a couple of podcasts from This American Life last night called "Cops See it Differently", and they were very good. In one of them, they reported the story of Miami Gardens, FL, and holy shit that was a doozy.
Here's the gist: over a 5 year period, cops reported approximately 100,000 "significant contacts". Many of those (maybe most of them) were bullshit like trumped up trespassing charges to satisfy arrest quotas. This is in a city of just over 100,000 people. Meanwhile, Miami, with a population of about 4 times that, reported about 3,500 "significant contacts" in the same period.
They also reported the case of Frank Jude, Jr, who suffered one of the most horrific beatings at the hands of police that I've ever heard of.
I teach classes to aspiring military MPs a couple of times a year. Understand the class is mostly black and mostly from the inner city. And they both joined the military and want to be MPs. So, we are not talking about a bunch of gang banging thugs here. These kids are all good kids often from very unfortunate circumstances. In every class there will two or three stories of being arrested for the crime of walking down the street while black because the cops needed an arrest that day. They arrest them, stick them in jail for a night or a weekend only to release them with no charges filed. Are some of these cases not telling the full story? Probably but not all of them. People have no idea what is actually going on in this country.
Is there a non-military Military Police?
Sorry, that just struck the same nerve that CAC Card does.
Yeah yeah. You know what I mean.
I would consider that a flaw of acronyms.
I would consider that a flaw of acronyms. tfgl
OR the NIC card!!
This is standard SOP.
(Note that the S in SOP is supposed to mean 'standing' and not 'standard' but has been overcome by concession)
I started listening to that yesterday and have not finished. I was most shocked (so far) by how the cop at the beginning could not see anything wrong with the video she was shown. By not immediately putting your arm where the police want it (despite human physiology) you are resisting.
Either the cop really believed what she was saying or has to close ranks around the party line. Both ways we are fucked.
An 82-year-old [Florida Man] spent Tuesday night in jail after deputies say he grabbed his 81-year-old neighbor's neck during an argument over the fact that his doorbell rang whenever hers did.
While Willis-Morse said she was frightened by her neighbor's actions, she also found a little humor in the catalyst of the attack. She said her doorbell rings whenever his does, too.
"There's no reason in this world," she said, "that anybody has to push, holler, scream and do what he did over the sound of a buzz. It's not even a buzz, actually, it's a bell. It's a pretty sound, it really is."
Of course, she's senile.
The moral of the story is - don't get a wireless doorbell.

Tom Cotton goes off on Iran's foreign minister....on Twitter
Iran's foreign minister on Thursday fired back at Sen. Tom Cotton's series of tweets calling for a debate on the U.S. Constitution, a day after the freshman Arkansas Republican proposed that the two meet in Washington to debate "Iran's record of tyranny, treachery and terror."
Mohammad Javad Zarif responded, congratulating Cotton on the birth on Monday of his son, Gabriel.
"Serious diplomacy, not macho personal smear, is what we need," Zarif tweeted Thursday. "Congrats on Ur new born. May U and Ur family enjoy him in peace .@SenTomCotton"
Cotton's tweets followed remarks by Zarif at New York University on Wednesday, in which he said United Nations sanctions would be lifted if there is a nuclear deal, "whether Sen. Cotton likes it or not."
Cotton followed up his challenge with a tweet noting that he would "understand" if the foreign minister declined because "after all, in your 20s, you hid in US during Iran-Iraq war while peasants & kids were marched to death."
Well that's just embarrassing. By all means, let's allow Cotton to become the face of neocons.
For those who say there is no difference between the parties, I give you this.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....t-wilders/
Two Democratic Congress creatures have written a letter demanding that Gert Wilders be denied a VISA. It would be bad enough if they demanded he not be let in because he is a big racist meanie. They actually manage to be worse. They claim
In the U.S., freedom of speech is a bedrock principle that distinguishes free societies from ones living under oppressive regimes. Freedom of speech, however, is not absolute. It is limited by the legal and moral understanding that speech that causes the incitement of violence or prejudicial action against protected groups is wrong.
So "free speech" in their view doesn't include speech against "protected groups" whatever those are. These people are evil and insane. And they are one Supreme Court appointment and one freakish majority in Congress away from getting their way. Worse still, they own the universities and are producing an entire generation of depraved retards who will some day be in positions of authority.
speech that causes the incitement of violence
causes the incitement of violence
WTF does that word salad even mean?
They are evil and insane but make up for it by being retarded. That letter was written by two members of Congress to be made public. That means both they and their staffs no doubt worked on it and crafted the language. Yet, they still produce a horrible and meaningless phrase like that. They can't even write the English language anymore.
The people who claim that gay marriage isn't going to cause these assholes to go after any church that refuses to perform a gay wedding are kidding themselves. Read that letter and tell me that they are not after complete control of people's thoughts and speech.
Well, in their defense, they have reached a scientific consensus on ethics. Debate's over. Opposing viewpoints need to be criminalized.
Saw that and mailed it to my mom who lives in Indiana and is voting for Hillary "no matter what".
This is not news, however, I count on average on serious attempt per week from the left to restrict or repeal or somehow abrogate the first amendment...
Geert Wilders' great crime was to criticize Islam, it's precepts and the culture it creates among practitioners. It's like these socialists and progressives think it's racist to criticize certain ideas only when those ideas happen to predominate among a particular group of brown people. Now if Geert WIlders criticized some ideology predominately held by white people, like say libertarianism, he'd be a hero of the people.
Of course he would. It is bad enough they hate him for the crime of questioning Islam. What is worse than that, however, is their contention that what he is saying is not protected by the 1st Amendment in the US. That is fucking terrifying.
Islam is an atrocious pile of shit belief system. Bill Maher is correct in that it is a form of conservatism and progressives who protect it from criticism are insane.
BBBUUUUUTTTTPPPLLLUUUUUUUUUUUUUG
You've surprised me Shreek. I'm not surprised it required Bill Maher to guide you down that path, but I'm surprised all the same that you arrived at a rational conclusion. I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket now, this is a day for crazy shit to happen.
Shreek is retarded and delusional but makes up for it by being a follower.
Well, Bill Maher IS almost as economically illiterate as the dipshit Shreek, so it kind of makes sense....
Ummm...it's been a while but I can't recall ANY case law that says "speech that causes...prejudicial action against protected groups is wrong."
They are working to change that.
Nappers can relax in a zero-gravity reclining chair and choose from a variety of colored lights or complete darkness to find the perfect sleep mood. The cost: $1 a minute.
Cheaper than a shrink, and more effective.
A dollar a minute? I remember when you could sleep -- with a hooker -- for that.
But that was back when a dollar was worth something.
And you still had enough money leftover to buy flowers for your wife and ride the trolly home.
chloroform in bulk comes to about 20 cents a hanky.
"The More You Know"
What the hell is a "zero gravity reclining chair"? Have we mastered controlling gravity and I just haven't heard about it?
"Oh, very well. *So-called* 'zero gravity reclining chair'."
They're very comfortable. I hear they're good for people with back problems as well. I think it'd be accurate to say that it's just a chair that reclines at a greater angle than your typical recliner, though.
Isn't that called a bed?
Not to be a smart ass but the name seems awfully stupid. If it is comfortable enough and peaceful enough, I could see it being worth a dollar a minute. If you go to the Roman baths in Baden Baden, at the end of it they put you in this big, quiet room on this really comfortable table wrapped up in this super soft blanket and just leave you there for thirty minutes. It is amazing. I would pay a dollar a minute for that.
No, it reclines below horizontal.
Ah. Okay. I am not sure I would like that.
Area feminist outraged that men convicted of absolutely nothing can transfer schools
A bit of good news for college rapists: if you've been accused of sexual assault and don't feel like sticking around to deal with the consequences on campus, you can simply transfer schools and no one will be the wiser. Thanks to a privacy law for students, young men accused of rape don't even have to disclose the complaint to their new school.
Since we know that college rapists commit an average of six rapes during their time at school, these colleges ? and this policy ? are making it easier for sexual offenders to move on without consequence. And onto new victims.
[snip]
But here's the thing: We shouldn't have to write in code what colleges need to know about incoming students. And while I'm mindful of students' privacy, I'm more concerned about students' safety. Schools already handle sexual assault cases poorly and rapists continue to attack with impunity ? do we really want to make it that much easier for them? Packing up your bags and starting over elsewhere shouldn't be an option for rapists ? especially when "starting over" often just means new victims in a new place.
I don't think she is.
we know that college rapists commit an average of six rapes during their time at school
And that's not even counting the *unreported* rapes!
I'm going to guess she doesn't give a cite for that.
I'm kind of surprised. From the writing style, I thought it might be from Jezebel.
Only SIX?!?! Hah! That's nothing - I committed that many in thoughtcrimes before 10 am today!!!
He was a Kulak. He is guilty by virtue of who he is not what he has or hasn't done. This is how Marxism and its twin Fascism work. The college rape hysteria is the result of decades of Marxist thinking in our universities. Straight men have been designated an enemy class. They therefore are guilty of any crime they are accused.
For some crazy reason, I think we don't actually know that at all. And people who say we do are necessarily liars, dumbfucks or lying dumbfuck cunts.
Gee, Jessica... Maybe colleges are the best law enforcement mechanism for adjudicating rape claims.
*aren't* My brain feels like it spent the night with Agile Cyborg.
Ouch!
And it's a complete travesty that rape is not illegal which means the justice system cannot be brought to bear when it happens.
Or is it?
Ummmmm 5 out of 6 of these headlines have already run in A.M. and P.M. links over the last 2 days.

Vietnamese Prime Minister scolds US for committing "barbarous crimes" during war
Vietnam's prime minister has spoken of "countless barbarous crimes" committed by the US during the Vietnam War.
Nguyen Tan Dung was speaking at an event in Ho Chi Minh City to mark the 40th anniversary of the end of the war.
On 30 April 1975 the city - which was then called Saigon and was the capital of South Vietnam - was captured by communist troops from the North.
Three million Vietnamese, and 58,000 US soldiers died in the war. But the US and Vietnam now have diplomatic ties.
Speaking in front of the former Presidential Palace Mr Dung said: "[The US] committed countless barbarous crimes, caused immeasurable losses and pain to our people and country".
"Our homeland had to undergo extremely serious challenges."
Some in Vietnam are still suffering from deformities and the lasting effects of the dioxin Agent Orange, sprayed by the US Air Force into the thick jungle used as cover by northern guerrilla forces.
I don't suspect he went on to talk about the Vietnamese reeducation camps. Also, let us all find it satisfying that today Vietnam is one of the most pro-capitalist countries in the world!
https://twitter.com/qz/status/593541642700791808
He has a point.
He does, but it was war and the hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese living here today would probably have preferred it if the US had prevailed.
I grew up near the large Vietnamese community in Garden Grove and Westminster California. Lots of families that went through hell trying to survive the new regime and get out of the country.
Oh I know. There's plenty of blame to go around, but the US bears some level of responsibility for bombing the shit out of peasants for years on end for an extremely debatable purpose. We celebrate that Vietnam is pro-capitalism now, but would they have reached the same conclusion without US involvement?
Ho Chi Minh was an ardent admirer of the US, it's Constitution and it's history of overthrowing colonialist powers. He even quoted the US declaration of independence in his own declaration of independence to the French, if I recall correctly. He first tried to secure an alliance or at least some support from the United States in his efforts to rid Vietnam of the French. This failed and he turned to the Communists.
His essentially nationalist forces slapped a communist star on their new red flag and a communist insurgency was born. All because the US wanted to help France maintain it's stranglehold on SE Asia. France doesn't get nearly the credit they deserve for fucking up that part of the world.
France doesn't get nearly the credit they deserve for fucking up that part of the world.
Repaired that for ye.
Of course they would have. And the thing that the liberals never talk about is that the only reason South Vietnam fell was because the Democrats cut off aid to it and ensured the entire world knew we would never return to defend it from the north. Once that happened, the North invaded and it was all over. Nixon won the fucking war. The 1972 Paris Accords gave us everything we wanted. The Democrats hated him for it and as soon as they could, did everything they could to reverse it. They really were on the other side and were at the time very happy to help bring about the fall of Cambodia and South Vietnam.
Did you see X-men : Day of Future Past? They are at the Paris Peace Accords and the Norht Vietnamese are crowing about how they beat the U.S.? The narrative of most people is that that was true. Most people don't realize that we had beaten them at that point, that they pressed for the accords even after Uncle Ho's famous boast "You can kill ten of our men for every one we kill of yours. But even at those odds, you will lose and we will win."
No. But that doesn't surprise me.
Just because they are worse, doesn't make us any better or make his point any less valid. I can't defend our prison system in this country. And it is not just drugs. We have people serving sentences for things like possession of child porn or small time robberies or bullshit gun possession crimes where no one was hurt that are longer than the sentences people get for murder in other countries. We have become a nasty, intolerant and vicious society. We think we are so much better than our parents and grand parents because we no longer have Jim Crow and we all love the gays so much. That is nice and all but it ignores all of the ways we have become so much worse.
Absolutely. American and European culture is degenerating rapidly in the face of false morality. You may not think I know morality when I see it because I don't worship your god, but the downward spiral is there to see even for us heathens operating on rational morality. Justice is effectively dead in this country and it's not coming back for the remainder of the United States' (as in the federal government's) existence.
It is morality and also reason. People seem to have lost the capacity for reason. Worst of all is that we have lost the idea that every individual is entitled to the same dignity and value and can receive redemption. Minimum mandatory sentences are one of the most horrible expressions of that. It is society saying that no one guilty of this or that crime could ever be worthy of a break and therefore we must take away judges' and juries' power to give such a break. If you do this, you are worthless and are cast out no matter what. Same with sex offender registries. The idea that a person could pay their debt to society and be a better person is not entertained. You are a "sex offender" and will always remain such. People are no longer people but tools for ends or scape goats to be disposed of in the name of cleansing the community of its sins. It is a return to primativism and a repudiation of our entire civilization.
Maybe I'm weak but if I were one of the scores of men to be wrongfully placed on the sex offender registry, suicide would look pretty appealing. At least in comparison to being forced to knock on doors and tell everyone lies about myself so that I can become the most despised human being in the neighborhood.
The thing is that even if you were guilty of a real sex crime instead of a made up one, once you are out of jail, why don't you deserve a second chance? If you don't deserve a second chance, we shouldn't let you out of jail or just murder you. The entire premise of the registry is that anyone who has committed such a crime can never repent or change and must forever be marked and shunned by society. That is a total repudiation of the enlightenment and modern western civilization. Branding people and exiling them forever from the community is what pre-modern societies did and was the kind of thing the Enlightenment ended. Not anymore. When you throw in the junk sciences like psychology and such, we are increasingly no better than if we were conducting trial by ordeal or throwing witches into rivers to see if they will float.
The successful junk sciences all have a connection to taxation and government control higher education. Back in the day, a junk science would eventually be repudiated by the weight of it's own wrongness. These days junk sciences don't lose funding when the ideas fail to pass scientific scrutiny, they only lose funding and support when they fail to serve state interests. Taxes, being involuntary transfers, have a way of promoting the worst ideas at the expense of good ones.
"Hi, I'm FS and I was caught pissing in public ten years ago. Now I have to tell all my neighbors I'm on the same registry as child rapists. Please use this glove if you feel the need to punch me in the face because you're an idiot, and enjoy the rest of your life."
"Hi I'm FS, I was caught pissing in public. A mother with a child saw me from 100 feet away. Ergo, I exposed myself to a child and I'm the rough equivalent to a child rapist. See you around neighbor!"
And there's the irony, "progressivism" is a regression to the most primitive forms of human interaction.

The Mrs. and I had another OB/GYN appointment with a sonogram and got to see our baby actually looking like a baby instead of a blur with a heart beat. It was incredible and too brief. Seeing something that looks like an actual person, with a head, arms, legs, moving; I almost crushed my wife's hand I was holding it so hard.
The next appointment where we can get an ultrasound cannot come soon enough, and the actual estimated date of birth seems like an eternity away.
Unfortunately we already have our names settled so no auctioning rights, however when the Eternal Empress Godking ascends to the Throne of Souls and Blood I'll try and have your lives spared, or at least your suffering limited.
Congrats! But do submit her for consideration into the Libertarian Breeding Project.
I googled 'Libertarian Breeding Project' and got no hits. Very disappointing.
It's in the deep web. Can't let the world know before we can unleash its products on the world in the form of a tv series called Reason Babies. Their cuteness will be your death.
It'll be just like the Boys From Brazil!
If Reason has some baby-sized swag I am going to have to buy it.
Maybe this isn't your first child, so you already know, but if you don't-
Right after birth there is an awesome period where she is the most alert she will be for weeks. Your wife will still be busy with medical stuff. This is your moment to permanently fix your child in your mind. Hold her and look into her eyes. She will look back at you and you will feel love.
After that, the next few weeks can be pretty hard. That moment is incredibly helpful.
Awesome!
I would encourage you to read to your child every night while in the womb. I read to both my boys for 15 to 20 minutes every night before they were born and recommend it highly. I think it accentuated their verbal skills.
You had enough old copies of Penthouse Letters to do that much child bonding?
Color me impressed!
My congrats too!
The next big milestone for you is when you sort of come back to your senses out of a rage caused by your hormonal wife's insistence that you drive all the way back across town to look at some baby item one more time and realize that you have gone on an epic rant and made her cry in public. Slinking away from that is a real character building moment.
At least my wife always went into some crazy nesting phase and demanded we go together to every baby store in town and look at things. Then she would want to go do the circuit several more times. I swear I tried to be understanding, but at some point I would snap at her and she would cry.
I'm sure those wonderful trips got me on several lists. Thank god they were all pre-cellphone era so I wasn't plastered on Twitter and FB.
By the way, the first kid nesting phase is the worst. It gets slightly better with subsequent releases of kids.
My congrats too!

Bernie Sanders is an avowed socialist. 52 percent of Democrats are OK with that.
Would the media PLEASE describe the Democrat Party as EXTREME?
Oh no! No, sir. EXTREME and RADICAL are words reserved for the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party.
Nothing says young and hip like a seventy something white guy preaching a nearly two hundred year old ideology. Remember, it is the Republicans and Libertarians who are just a bunch of old white guys with old fashioned ideas.
And yeah, the Democratic party has gone full retard. It used to be they pretended you could be a socialist without being a really crazy one. Now most of them don't even pretend. And I bet at least 25% of them would proudly call themselves communists.
Collectivism isn't a two hundred year old ideology. It's much more ancient than that.
And they will march in the streets of the nation's capital:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkw7n9Qagu8
Should be playing the Internationale instead of the new Russian national anthem.
Imagine if a bunch of Republicans had a rally and a whole bunch of Nazis showed up. But if a bunch of commies show up to a prog rally, move along, nothing to see here!
Obama isn't communist enough!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHhwghsUFfs
I mean the circular logic and emotional reasoning should be bad enough, but the track record of complete failure doesn't deter them, nor the conservatively estimated 100+ million murdered humans last century.
These people could be considered hapless retards were their policy preferences not so stone evil.
Well if your a socialist, and are surrounded by people who are socialist it's not that extreme of a viewpoint. Also about 10-15% probably consider themselves full fledged communists.
Extreme compared to what? It is a relative thing. It's stupid to call the Republicans extreme. But doing the same for Democrats doesn't make that better.
And what does it mean to say that "Democrats are OK with that". I don't think a poll question asking if you think that socialism is good, or whatever it was, says much. And the article offers no further explanation. People have a lot of ideas of what "socialism" means, ranging from state control of major industries to having a generous welfare state and universal health insurance. The latter may be a terrible idea, but in contemporary politics it isn't really terribly extreme.
I believe that socialism is evil and must be destroyed, by force of arms if necessary.
I would be called extreme for my views. But socialism, with its historical death toll, poverty, misery, and subjugation of the people won't be called extreme.
Just my thought.
Socialism is how the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
I believe socialism is the construction company "collective" who built that road.
Come on Zeb. Socialism is an extremist evil ideology. Calling yourself a socialist is no better than calling yourself a white supremacist or a theocrat. If some Republican were running on a platform of repealing the 1st Amendment and making the US a Christian theocracy along the lines of the Cromwell Protectorate, you wouldn't call him extreme? Well, Sanders' is just as extreme as that. He wants to repeal the 1st Amendment, end free speech, property rights and establish a socialist state.
Come on, John. Socialists only want to make things fair. How fair is it that some people go without things that they want while others have extreme wealth? That's not fair at all. All socialists want to do is have everyone live at the expense of everyone else. So their intentions are good and wonderful. Republicans are the evil ones with bad intentions because they support inequality. They want to subsidize the rich at the expense of the poor. Remember that we're all in this together. That means that not taking is giving and not giving is taking, because everything belongs to everyone. It's all about intentions.
Sanders is extreme. I agree with everything you say there. I was saying that I am not convinced that the Democratic party as a whole is any more than the Republicans are. Sanders explains his socialism and he definitely is all that you say. My point is that a vague poll about whether people think socialism is OK or whatever doesn't tell you much of anything. As with all political labels, most people who will call themselves socialist do so as social signalling or for other silly reasons.
I think that trying to label an entire party like that is counterproductive and just serves to entrench people in their positions. In my experience, when you talk to people about the kind of socialism they favor, it is mostly about national health insurance, more progressive taxation and some degree of redistribution through welfare. Which are all bad things, but not terribly extreme like what Sanders wants.
See sarcasmic comment at 10:35 AM below. It couldn't have been said better than that.
Yes. See my response. All governments do that. Unless you are an anarchist you support it to some degree.
The main point of what I am saying is that extreme is relative and that dismissing your political opponents as extremists if you want to accomplish anything through politics. If you don't care about that, call them whatever you want.
There's nothing wrong with being extreme per se. Abolitionists in the Roman Republic were extremists to be sure, but they weren't wrong.
This is also true, and illustrates nicely how it is a relative term. If you are right, you are right, extreme or not.
He's totes against authority...except for the IRS, the DEA, the NSA, the EPA....
He's certainly not anti-authoritarian. But, bad as socialism is, there are degrees. Sweden is not the USSR. It is silly to pretend that anyone who identifies as socialist approves of and supports every thing that anyone has ever called "socialism".
Socialism is equality by force. By its nature it must be authoritarian. The degrees are more a matter of how accepting society is with it. If society is accepting of it, then they will go along without complaint. The more people who resist, the more visible force must be used. In a homogeneous society of conformists, the force isn't seen. But it's still there.
Absolutely, I get it. That also describes any government that has ever existed.
But you don't get anywhere by just telling people that they are stupid and evil. Though I did almost lose my temper the other day when someone spoke favorably of Sanders' run and I told them that socialism was stupid and evil and anti-human.
Governments can enforce justice or fairness, but not both.
If government enforces justice, then there will be inequality in society. It's natural.
For government to enforce fairness, then it must be an instrument of injustice.
For example if you have more stuff than me, and I steal from you to make things fair, then you can go to government to get justice. However if I have government steal for me to make things fair, then you cannot get justice.
That's what makes socialism evil. It places that word "social" before justice, changing government from an organization that uses force for good, for justice, into an organization that uses force for evil, for injustice.
Justice is an abstract concept created by humans to govern human interaction. Fairness, outside of contracts, is a purple unicorn that farts rainbows.
And communists know that their communism is different from statist autocracy. They use a different name for the state you see, so it's like totally different and stuff.
Yeah, Bernie. Your democratic socialism worked out so well for pre-1991 India. Only 14 million children died from poverty and starvation.
F*** off benevolent smooth-talking slaver.
He should call it "people's socialism". That has a nice ring to it.
Authoritarian communism is Jeffrey Dahmer, democratic socialism is the Donner party. Either way, you know what's for dinner.

The new edict will require that California's GHG emissions be reduced by 2030 to a level that is 40 percent below 1990 levels. This is the same target that was set by the 28-nation European Union last October and is comparable to targets established by other nations that will be participating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference later this year in Paris, France."

I thank the Gods everyday for helping me choose atheism, so I don't have to follow random pronouncements from random people.
When it comes to economic issues, Pope Francis is a moron. The Pay gap has been debunked by everyone not spewing ideological bullshit, and even some on the left who do, upto and including the DoL. He should stick to theology and faith. Those are his strong points.
"He should stick to theology and faith. Those are his strong points."
I dunno. Stand-up or a late-night talk show might be better.
He was a bouncer. Maybe he should go back to that?
Keep in mind, our statistics only refer to US pay. Other countries might have actual discrimination(possibly being negatively correlated with the free market).
I miss that last Pope - Palpitine, was it?
I'm catching up on threads from yesterday. Is Jim Smithy a new troll or an old troll under a new handle?
It's kinda like the answer is always Hitler; presume tulpa until disproven.

I don't like baseball, but I like that guy. He's alright...

My wife hates it but loves the American one. Every time I talk to her I ask her why she didn't move to the States.
What kind of dunces make a product , that your number 1 fanboy users couldn't possibly enjoy from the inside of a starbucks?
Are you telling me that when they tested this thing, there were no blacks or people with tattoos employed?
But... but... the ads
Even if the sensors work when a person is sitting down, the darker their skin is, the less likely the sensors are to capture data when the person is moving. "The signal to noise ratio will be much higher," LeBoeuf says.
Either the writer or LeBoeuf doesn't understand the concept of SNR. The SNR would be lower, which is the problem.
The writer also doesn't seem to know the concept of noun-pronoun agreement, but that's a different story.
Better Off Ted already did this.
Oh, USA,
Our home and native land,
True patriot sex

I've come to like the American anthem more over the years. I used to think it was kind of stupid, but I like that it's just about a battle and doesn't try to say everything there is to say about the country.
I also think it's form is wonderfully odd, being a weird run-on sentence and a question (the first verse, at least).
Who wouldn't learn the words? It's a fuckin' rockin' anthem
Yeah well it's a French-Canadian who wrote the lyrics.
Anthems I like include USA, Canada, Soviet Union, France, Italy, Germany.
I hate to admit it, but this one is pretty good.
Go look up the full version some time.
And of course the tune is an old English drinking song, "To Anacreon in Heaven".
I love The Star Spangled Banner. In not trying to "say everything there is to say about the country", it says everything that needs to be said.
And the question is both relevant and poignant, precisely because it can never be answered with any permanence.
Yeah, one day I was listening to the anthem and thought of some poor guy sitting on a prison barge. If that flag falls, it means a trip to England- that the war is over, and it will be years before he sees his family again. And yet, in the morning, that flag is there, giving him hope that he will be free.
Thinking about that, and the hope and joy he must have experienced seeing that flag standing by the dawn's early light made me love the song so much that I can't help singing every time its played.
Needs more Ike.
You just cannot arrest him.
In some ways sure. In other ways no. The point of the "what if they were a member of your family" appeal is for people to remember that the object of their scorn is also someone's loved one and thus rise above their anger. The problem with the feminists is that they only think that applies to women. All these men they hate so much and want punished are someone's son or husband. Would they want their son treated like that? Sadly, a few of them, Hannah Rosin for one, no doubt would. But most wouldn't.
Radical feminists just suck at relationships, period.
I thought the Canadian anthem was "Spirit of the Radio."
*ahem*
It's "The Spirit of Radio," you heathen pig.
Sorry, I'm not Canadian.
I thought it was this?
Sadly, a few of them, Hannah Rosin for one, no doubt would.
This is false, as Hannah Rosin would likely choose to abort any male offspring...
I love it too! It's very hopeful and human centered. Compare that to the dreary "America the Beautiful". God gave us purple mountains and grain and pretty places because he loves us more than the people in ugly countries.
