Huey P. Newton Gun Club Aims To Be 'Black Alternative to the NRA'

Today Vice magazine takes a lengthy look at the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, an organization formed in the wake of Michael Brown's shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, last August. The group instantly made headlines by taking to the streets of South Dallas armed with rifles and shotguns, spouting a rhetorical mix of open-carry appreciation and condemnation for police militarization and brutality.
Co-founders Charles Goodson, whom Vice describes as a "31-year-old dreadlocked vegan," and Darren X, national field marshall with New Black Panther Party, have a long history of activism against police violence in the Dallas area. From Aaron Lake Smith at Vice:
The Dallas New Black Panthers have been carrying guns for years. In an effort to ratchet up their organizing efforts, they formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, uniting five local black and brown paramilitary organizations under a single banner.
"We accept all oppressed people of color with weapons," Darren X, who is 48, tells me in a deep, authoritative baritone. "The complete agenda involves going into our communities and educating our people on federal, state, and local gun laws. We want to stop fratricide, genocide—all the 'cides."

Though the New Black Panther Party seems to share a fashion sense and at least some rhetoric with the original Black Panthers, members of the old guard aren't big fans. Bobby Seale, one of the founders of the original Black Panthers, speculated to Vice that the new group was a right-wing front organization, possibly funded by the Koch brothers.
"But despite the New Black Panther Party's dismal reputation, in Dallas its members are, at least, the most thoughtful and professional revolutionaries around," writes Smith.
They have a platform, an ideology…and are serious about their politics and the importance of being armed….Darren X says that his Party is trying to move away from the inflammatory rhetoric of its leadership and "transition from black power to all power to all the people."…
Goodson hopes the Huey P. Newton Gun Club will continue to grow and eventually become a mainstream gun-rights organization, the "black alternative to the NRA."
The need for a gun rights movement specifically for black Americans stems from the fact that black and white gun owners tend to face fundamentally different issues in the U.S., the men say. Read the whole Vice piece for more on the gun club's goals, plus a history lesson on how fear of armed blacks directly spawned much of our early gun control legislation. Not really. The only difference I can see is that black gun owners keep voting overwhelmingly for Democratic politicians who are committed to taking away their gun rights. If black people are more likely to run afoul of gun laws than whites are, that is entirely the result of a high proportion of black people living in communities that elect Democratic politicians who don't respect gun rights.
And I am all for community self help and gun rights. If these guys want to help arm their communities so that they will no longer be ruled by gangs, good for them. If their idea is to arm themselves so they can create their own authoritarian state with them rather than the police as the oppressors, no thank you.
Laws against felons owning guns disproportionately affects black folks. So they very definitely look at gun rights issues through a different lens.
Their other problem is "community leaders" who are reactionary anti-gun nutjobs, not just politicians. Think Al Sharpton. White folks don't have someone like that (a non-politician with a huge amount of influence across multiple states and cities) screaming about gun violence in their communities.
I say good for them. Their reasons for wanting guns is irrelevant. The Constitution says guns are A-OK. It doesn't specify under what ideology the gun owner has to operate.
If they don't like their community leaders, they should get new ones. And if they don't like the felony gun laws, vote for people who want to repeal them or stop committing felonies.
And of course they can have guns. That, however, doesn't make these people necessarily good.
White folks don't have someone like that (a non-politician with a huge amount of influence across multiple states and cities) screaming about gun violence in their communities.
Bloomberg, Brady, Shields, Watts, Gifford, etc.
Quantity v quality.
Is there a term for inveighing 'Koch' as an ad hominem? Like Godwinning?
There should be.
Its why you need to stay away from PBS Elizabeth. So much of it is funded by the Kochs and thus just extremist propaganda.
Or the Ballet!? you have no idea how much Right-Wing propaganda they managed to stuff into The Nutcracker this year.
Kochining? Nah, kochinizing? Kochification?
"Is there a term for inveighing 'Koch' as an ad hominem?"
"Koch Snorting"?
As in: 'The argument came to a close once it was Koch-ed up by the MSNBC pundit.'
Koch blocking
'Winning the Pepsi Challenge'?
Looks like ENB found an alternative to alt-text.
You're just not black enough to see it.
NRA should definitely be reaching out to them, and if the HNGC really wants to extend to all people, they should solicit an alliance with the NRA. NRA needs to do better PR with black communities. Too many blacks think that Jason Whitlock is right regarding the NRA and have NO IDEA what their history is. NRA is way to up on police cock-sucking tho, so they kind of need to move away from that.
Cops and former cops have long since taken over the NRA. The NRA has done a good job of remaining non partisan and single issue. It hasn't been co-opted by the GOP. It has, sadly, been co-opted by the cops
In 2008 the NRA endorsed John McCain even though they graded him a "C" on gun rights. They passed over Bob Barr who they graded an "A" on gun rights. The NRA is no longer a non-partisan organization.
The alternative was Obama. They endorse Democratic candidates who are good on guns all of the time. The NRA just didn't consider Bar a serious candidate. And they were not alone in that.
If I ran for President in 2016, should the NRA endorse me? I am as pro gun as you can get.
John/MNG 2016!
That's just political realism. If the NRA just endorsed the most gun friendly candidate regardless of their chance of winning, they would be much less relevant and influential.
I stopped giving to the NRA because of their love of police and because they wouldn't stop calling me on the phone, among other reasons. But I think they do a pretty good job of rating candidates in a fair, non-partisan way.
They never call me on the phone.
Probably because I told them to stop it.
I also don't notice much "love of police" as such. Maybe it's just that the NRA is thoroughly mainstream in its support base, and the average American actually likes policemen and policing in the general.
(Note: The Reason commentariat, especially over the last year, is far more off-center anti-cop than the NRA is off-center pro-cop.
See, well, just below this comment as I submit.)
Hear, hear!
NRA is way to up on police cock-sucking tho, so they kind of need to move away from that.
Like they are going to risk alienating the "cops can do no wrong" crowd and lose their membership dues.
I agree. The NRA should contact them and give them a free year subscription. Unfortunately all the cop tactical gear they advertise might not go over too well with these guys.
These are Black nationalists, I doubt they'd ever want to join a group with conservative Whites. Period.
This has got to be a parody account. Oy vey.
Go home, /pol/. You're drunk.
" NRA is way to up on police cock-sucking tho, so they kind of need to move away from that."
Which is why I prefer Gun Owners of America.
There are other guns orgs they could partner with. Like NAGR or GOA. I can't see black folks taking to an organization that is part of the thick blue wall of jackbooted statism.
I've heard about the Koch brothers thing too but I don't believe it. I've never seen any indication that the Koch brothers care about gun control issues.
Black politicians and intellectuals love to be anti-gun because it allows them to blame an inanimate object for their people's savagery. But I'd bet a lot of everyday Blacks don't see it that way, they love their guns!
Black separatism is a logical endpoint of liberal ideology. If you believe that the White man is out to get you, and you'd be living in a paradise without the White man, isn't racial separatism the logical position? Most Black intellectuals are smart enough to see through it, though.
Fuck off, Slappy.
One word: Liberia.
I'm wondering if these guys will make the GOP faithful skeptical of gun rights.
I don't know enough about the NRA these days to really have an opinion about them, but my first reaction to the cop issue is that it can't be bad that enough cops are pro-2A to take over the organization, if thats what is going on.
As to the HN gun club, this is an example of exactly what many blacks do wrong. Setting themselves apart as a community, deliberately maintaining a separate culture is not advancing their interests.
You are exactly right.
Tribalism. It's been fashionable for some time.
All one has to do is declare themselves a member of some tribe that has experienced discrimination, and then line up for the governmental handouts.
Reparations for all I say! 🙁
Even my extreme left leaning (and card carrying member of the Communist party) SIL could see this after a short stint as a middle school teacher. First on an Indian reservation in the badlands of Nevada. And then, in a SF Bay Area middle school in the burbs where she faced it head on when a black student cold cocked her when she intervened in a student brawl sending her to the hospital on a stretcher.
His parents had him back in school within two days playing the race card to the administration.
Eighth graders beating on teachers. And, getting away with it. Who'd have thunk it?
Let the pogroms begin!
GOA?
Not enough black power.
Bobby Seale, one of the founders of the original Black Panthers, speculated to Vice that the new group was a right-wing front organization, possibly funded by the Koch Brothers.
Oh.
I love it when Huey Newton does "The Heart of Rock and Roll".
Wrong band of brothers, bro.
I believe it was meant to be a funny.
Online text is so devoid of inflection, tone and other important characteristics of our verbal communications.
"uniting five local black and brown paramilitary organizations under a single banner."
You know who else united paramilitaries under a single banner?
The Boy Scouts of America?
The Continental Congress?
Jeff Davis?
Public Enemy?
Kevin Costner, as The Postman?
http://www.iranmilitaryforum.net/ ? (cause it has a web banner..)
Mon Mothma?
It's a tarp!
Jennifer Lawrence?
five local black and brown paramilitary organizations
No editorial slant, there.
Who are you calling an editorial slant?
Nicely done.
They prefer "editorial angled-plane Americans".
Seeing the quotes from the members/founders it sure looks like this organization has less to do with protecting gun rights and more to do with Black Power! style separatism. It kinda looks like the gun rights angle is just a means to an end. If a white person was disillusioned by the NRA or other gun rights groups and wanted to join, would he be admitted?
"'We accept all oppressed people of color with weapons,' Darren X, who is 48, tells me in a deep, authoritative baritone. "
Well is white a "color"? I'm white - whatever that is. And, I have lots of weapons.

Fundamental Differences?
Would that be the difference between observing the law, and breaking it?
