A #DCFerguson protester shuts down a street near the White House
Stephanie Slade

It's 5:40 p.m. in Washington, D.C., and protesters have shut down the intersection of 15th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. They are staging a "die-in," with dozens of marchers lying in the middle of the road, memorializing Mike Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed black men killed by police this year. They are angry and they want justice. But amid chants of "If I can't breathe, you can't breathe!" and "Who shuts shit down? We shut shit down" another sound reaches us from the nearby White House Ellipse. There, a very different sort of event is happening: the ceremonial lighting of the National Christmas Tree. "This is what democracy looks like!" shouts the crowd as an upbeat rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" plays in the background. At one point, the protesters fall quiet as the operatic vocal group The Tenors sings "O Holy Night." Then it ends and they're back to marching, singing "We Shall Overcome," and yelling at the many members of the press (myself included) to put down our cameras and join them.

A second demonstration is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mount Vernon Square, and I would not be suprised if this group made its way to join the protest there. I'll post photos of the action later tonight—or you can check out my Twitter feed for live updates, including lots of pictures, right now.

UPDATE: Photos and video of the action are here.

February 2015: POLAR VORTEX!!! Eric who?

Eric Garner is the reason we have a second amendment.

    “I’m here to support Eric”
“Ok, here’s your button and sign”
“Um, these say ‘Eric and Michael’. Got one that just says “I support Eric”?
“Are you some kind of racist?”

  4. Suthenboy   11 years ago

I see Reason senses the moment and is doubling down on the police brutality stories. Good.

I also see that the community organizer-in-chief is doubling down on divisiveness by trying to make this about race. In the end will we see him do anything at all about police accountability, which he already acknowledged as being the solution?

    I won’t make that bet.

    1. Paul.   11 years ago

Turning every police brutality incident into a racial incident is WHY we have more police brutality.

It ignores the core problem by waving the shiny bauble of a race story in front of the media.

Meanwhile, the tactics and process that gets us the brutality in the first place remains in full force.

Continue killing away, police departments, just make sure when we pile up the bodies, they look like America.

      1. Dweebston   11 years ago

You can afford to have vile racists staffing the ranks of cops if they’re checked by stringent civilian oversight and civil and criminal sanctions for misbehavior. You cannot afford to leave in place a culture of consequence-free brutality and expect to weed out the racists.

        1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

You cannot afford to leave in place a culture of consequence-free brutality and expect to weed out the racists.

I don’t see why not. It is a controversial topic as to whether or not certain crimes of the Soviet state are attributable to ethnic hatreds, but I’d say they managed to find plenty of bullies and brutes who were non-racial in their hatreds. The multi-ethnic composition of the Cheka and NKVD prior to WWII would seem to support this.

    2. Hyperion   11 years ago

He’s making it about race because him and his goons sure as hell don’t want people coming together and putting a stop to this shit.

      1. Paul.   11 years ago

Cigarettes are bad. Selling untaxed cigarettes is horrible. Quality of life is issue #1 for Democrats. Authority is to be respected. Killing the occasional black guy in the pursuit of the aforementioned, not acceptable.

Based on what I found in the Feminist Evidence Locker, it would be predominantly black men being killed for that offense.

white people go into denny’s carrying loaded automatic weapons and no one bats an eye black people get shot on sight for having toy or replica weapons

why cant you bring yourselves to accept that race plays a factor? are you too hung up on the atomized individual to acknowledge that most people still think in terms of groups?

I’ve seen loaded weapons in Denny’s several dozen times. None of them were automatic, and they were always carried by police.

            Nice try, though

Unarmed white man shot to death by police officer in Utah.

White man Kelly Thomas beaten to death by cops who were subsequently exonerated.

I can say race doesn’t play a factor due to the provable fact that cops kill white people frequently and end up not going to prison.

It’s based on thug cops killing the proles, not race. I can post another 5 or 6 hundred stories of cops killing white people if you don’t believe me.

        1. Calidissident   11 years ago

I disagree in that I think race does, generally speaking, play a factor, but I do agree that a lot of people who make it seem like cops never commit brutality or misconduct towards white people, or that they’re held accountable when they do, exaggerate it a good amount. Especially when it comes to the being held accountable part. I think there is a big difference in the likelihood of being a victim of police misconduct based on race (I base this on a combination of statistics indicating this, such as the stop and frisk stats in NYC, as well as personal experience living as a white guy in South LA), but I think that regardless of your race, the overwhelming odds are that the cop is not going to be held properly accountable if you are a victim of misconduct and/or brutality.

    4. widget   11 years ago

The ‘community organizer-in-chief’ is promising to equip cops with body cameras.

I’m a bit puzzled by that. Body cameras might be sound plan of action. But what authority does his use to make a local cop in East Peoria where one?

      1. Suthenboy   11 years ago

If you count up the shit presidential candidates and sitting presidents say they will do you will find that about 1/10 of it is shit they actually have the power to do.

Existing DHS funds + this, not so much.

        2. Whahappan?   11 years ago

Well, if Garner’s death was caught on camera, maybe the cop would have been indicted. Didn’t think of that, did you Mr. Smarty Pants?

“At one point, the protesters fall quiet as the operatic vocal group The Tenors sings “O Holy Night.” ”

This is just like when those Huns and Limeys left the trenches to celebrate Christmas together in December, 1914. Exactly like that.

  7. Dweebston   11 years ago

A second demonstration is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mount Vernon Square, and I would not be suprised if this group made its way to join the protest there.

          1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

They’re not actually working. As long as there’s no overtime involved, I’m still fine with it.

Random: I was at the bookstore, checking out the magazine rack. I ran across some magazine called ‘FP’. I flipped it open. It was full of the most god-awful, DC-insider apparatchik, sniffy elitist intellectual fisting articles you could imagine, all of which seemed to just really want to come out and suggest full-on sterilization of the hoi polloi.

I felt dirty just by touching it.

*in the time I wrote this post, I realized the magazine was probably “foreign policy”. I guess if you’re “in the know”, that would have been obvious.

              1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

  10. ProLifeLibertarian   11 years ago

Nothing will change, because those who are loudest about the Garner tragedy care more about race than issues of police brutality. That, and those who are most outspoken about this case are also usually the same people who support the idea that only cops should have guns.

  11. PapayaSF   11 years ago

This is not the good kind of civil disobedience, like refusing to move to the back of the bus because of your race. Your right to protest ends when it interferes with my right to get somewhere. Stay on the fucking sidewalk and wave your signs and chant your chants, but the fact that you’re upset doesn’t give you the right to disrupt the lives of other people.

Mike Brown was a violent criminal who autodarwinated. He’s a very poor symbol for any civil rights cause.

OT, and I haven’t had much time for reading or posting today. Maybe this has already been posted here. But considering the UVA rape story and the overall rape epidemic in the USA, has anyone seen this yet? I wonder if this is where the person who possibly invented the UVA gang rape story got their inspiration.

Lena Dunham is a big fat liar

This is a very interesting read, as well as very disturbing. This is my favorite part:

“Asking whether or not a victim is telling the truth is irrelevant,” Ms. Hess proclaimed. “It’s just not important if they are telling the truth.”

I think it’s very important to understand the type of people we are dealing with here. We are dealing with people who think that you should be able to accuse anyone you want to of a felony and that it’s not really even important at all if you are making it all up, even it if ruins that person’s life.

    1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

      From the linked article:
“At the time, Dunham says she was drunk, high on Xanax and cocaine, and therefore in no condition to give her consent.”

      Ummm…

      1. Hyperion   11 years ago

She’s a fucking nutcase. The way she writes about the encounter, you’d think it’s something she should have posted in Penthouse since she’s obviously fantasizing about getting fucked hard by a right winger with a big mustache and cowboy boots. But instead, because she’s mentally disturbed or just plain evil, she decides to accuse some innocent person of raping her just to try to make herself more popular with a bunch of weak minded people. Sick fucking bitch, she should be held accountable for this.

        1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

This is perfect case for slander if Barry can prove harm resulted from these baseless accusations.

Sue the lying slattern for all she’s got.

There’s a plus to all of this. The Obama administration reached out to her in the last election cycle. They think she’s influential.

Outside of her tiny little bubble, people are disgusted by her. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

The best part of this story is that Amanda Marcotte called Breitbart ‘rape deniers’ and compared them to Holocaust deniers:

      Amanda Marcotte @AmandaMarcotte
      Follow
@daveweigel It’s really time for people to understand that rape denialism is like Holocaust denialism: Broad refusal to accept reality.

See, when someone criticizes a specific story because they don’t believe the facts add up, that makes them a ‘denier.’ The only way to avoid being a denier is to uncritically believe what anyone tells you and never, ever engage in skepticism.

      1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

Does she have an editor? Even an internal one? Because nobody is claiming “there’s no such thing as rape,” which would be the equivalent of Holocaust denial.

Speaking of denial, the college rape crisis seems to not be much of a priority when the rapists aren’t white.

        1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

          Does she have an editor?

The last one hung himself from a lamppost on Christmas Eve in utter despair at the human race’s ability to ever produce enough quality prose to outweigh the literary effect of a single Marcotte article.

          Or write another racist book.

          1. Irish   11 years ago

These people gave Amanda Marcotte five star reviews.

Behold the sort of intellect who adores Amanda Marcotte:

I bought this book to give to a friend for her birthday and couldn’t resist peeking inside first. Now I’ve finished the book and I’ll have to explain that her present has creases in it because I couldn’t put it down. It’s right up any 20-something’s alley.

Don’t you dare try to talk for me, you son of a bitch.

Amanda writes with the sarcasm and wit our generation to which our generation is used, while exposing this truth behind most anti-choice and wingnut conservative arguments: They hate and fear women and seek to control them.

  13. Derpetologist   11 years ago

OT: I’m pretty sure Dunham’s alleged Republican rapist is Barry Garrett. I base this on a Michelle Malkin article on Oberlin hoaxes which mentions him being the president of the Oberlin College Republicans in 2006:

    http://michellemalkin.com/2013…..ese-years/

College senior Barry Garrett, president of the OC Republicans, introduced the syndicated columnist, blogger, Fox News contributor and former Competitive Institute Fellow as the obvious choice to start off what he described as a “sorely needed series” that would seek to “shatter political homogeneity.”

    1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

I don’t know who that is.

But if you’re telling me that he fucked Lena Dunham voluntarily, he’s dead to me.

      1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

I have a very hard time believing a good, solid, prog like her would be caught dead with the mortal enemy of progdom: a white male Republican.

        1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   11 years ago

Maybe she was confused by his purple cowboy boots.

          1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

Yeah, that’s a really plausible detail I believe without reservation.

I know when I was in college, I could always spot the College Republicans based on pornstaches and purple cowboy boots they all wore.

I don’t know who that is.

But if you’re telling me that he fucked Lena Dunham voluntarily, he’s dead to me.

Allegedly, he told John Nolte in the Breitbart story that he didn’t even know Lena Dunham. So it’s possible they never had sex.

Of course, this is a situation in which a whole host of untrustworthy sources are arguing with each other. Do I trust a narcissistic idiot like Dunham or do I place my faith in the Breit-tards?

I’ll withhold judgment until someone a bit more reputable interjects into this situation.

        1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

Please, the whole “Breitbart is untrustworthy” meme is based (AFAIK) on that one Shirley Sherrod tape, which someone leaked to them in part, before they got the whole tape. As far as I can tell, they are at least as trustworthy a source as the New York Times.

(Not that I believe anyone uncritically, but I dislike the “Everything in [news source] is false because they were wrong once” attitude.)

As far as I can tell, they are at least as trustworthy a source as the New York Times.

That’s a mighty low bar to clear. I think the New York Times is pretty untrustworthy too.

As for your claim about the ‘meme,’ I don’t give a shit about the Sherrod tape. Breitbart didn’t actually do anything wrong in that instance. On the other hand, they’ve published articles by Pamela Geller whining that a Muslim fireman who died on 9/11 got a street named after him and they’ve published articles by Kurt Schlicther freaking out about Bronies.

I think those sorts of articles have colored my opinion of them more than the Sherrod controversy.

            1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

I have no idea how Pamela Gellar became a conservative celebrity. Joe the Plumber I somewhat understand; his fame was circumstantial. Gellar OTOH is the internet equivalent of a street crazy — even given that a post 9/11 conservative would be interested in anti-Islamic viewpoints, she is a low-quality source relative to others (Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, etc). She is Alex Jones with bigger tits.

(Oddly, she self-identifies as an Objectivist — what the hell, right?)

              1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

I cut her a lot of slack because I can understand how a Jewish woman feels threatened by Islam.

                1. Calidissident   11 years ago

My jaw literally just dropped. Do you have zero self-awareness? Change “Jewish” to “black” and “Islam” to “white man” (or use words like “gay” and “Christian,” etc.) and it would the prime sort of comment you would lampoon if it were posted on a progressive site. She insinuated that a man that gave his life saving people on 9/11 wouldn’t have done it had he known it was an Islamic terror attack, and that it was a travesty that he had a street named after him, and he say she deserves sympathy because she’s Jewish? Wow

                  1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

Your analogies are not at all equivalent. Islam is a religion that persecutes Jews. That’s the reality, in history and in present-day practice. And while every single Muslim may not do it, it’s a core part of the religion, because Allah tells them to do it in the Koran, and the Koran is the direct word of Allah. You aren’t a Muslim unless you believe the Koran.

While there are Christians who hate gays or blacks or whatever, there is little in the Bible to justify either, and few if any Christian preachers who tell followers to kill gays (or anyone). OTOH, there are plenty of Muslim preachers telling followers to kill Jews. Heck, there’s Palestinian kid’s TV programming telling them to kill Jews.

So yes, I have sympathy for people who are officially targeted by a worldwide religion that contains millions of violent fanatics and their supporters.

                    1. Calidissident   11 years ago

“Your analogies are not at all equivalent.”

Of course. When progressives do it, they’re race baiting victomology-promoting moral relativists. When you do it, it’s perfectly rational.

“Islam is a religion that persecutes Jews.”

Good thing Christianity has no history of persecuting Jews and gays. And how can you say the Bible doesn’t support that? The OT calls for stoning homosexual men, and the New Testament condemns it in multiple places as well. Clearly you have absolutely no bias or double standard in evaluating the two religions. Also, Tonio had a link just today about a Christian preacher in Arizona calling for gays to be killed. It wasn’t until a decade ago that sodomy was legal in every state, and that only happened because of a Supreme Court decision. Furthermore, do you have to be a victim of state-sanctioned murder before you can have sympathy? Most Christians may not want to kill gays, but gay people still suffer a lot of discrimination and hatred in their lives from that group (obviously not all, but a very significant amount). And I used white, not Christians, with regards to black people. There are still millions of black people in this country who grew up in a time where they were officially second class citizens.

                    2. PapayaSF   11 years ago

Your examples only go to prove my point: what some Christians did in the past, and what a scattered few say today. That’s entirely different from Islam, both in theory and in practice. Partly it has to do with the difference between the ways Christians see the Bible and Muslims see the Koran, which I’ve gone into in the past but don’t have time for now.

                    3. Calidissident   11 years ago

“So yes, I have sympathy for people who are officially targeted by a worldwide religion that contains millions of violent fanatics and their supporters.”

Yes, Pam Geller has truly been so oppressed in her life. Totally excuses slandering a hero by insinuating that he was a supporter of terrorism. Mohammed Salman Hamdani did more good on the day he died than Pam Geller will ever do in her life. The vast majority of Jewish people I know would vehemently disagree with the notion that her religion or ethnicity excuses such appalling behavior. The fact that you’re actually defending her speaks volumes.

Yeah, she actually is a deeply disturbed individual. My feeling about the whole ‘child molestation’ thing is that the fact that Dunham did that stuff when she was like 7 doesn’t mean anything, but the fact that she talks about it at 28 like it’s just a normal story is grotesque.

The worst part of the molestation allegations was actually when she masturbated in bed next to her sister because at that point Dunham was like 17 and her sister was I believe 11. That actually is predatory behavior.

        1. Hyperion   11 years ago

She can write a book and be as sick as she wants to be, I’m free to ignore her.

I had never even heard of this woman before, I watch very little TV and when I do it’s typically news or documentaries.

When I read some snippets from her book on a news site for the first time, it actually almost made me physically ill, and I’ve read plenty of sick shit before.

So, what I’m saying is that I’ll defend her for writing whatever she wants, no matter how sick or disturbing it is. It’s free speech, which I’ll never stop defending.

The issue is that she’s using her position as a celebrity to recklessly insinuate that someone committed a felony, a potentially life ruining offense and it’s looking more and more likely that she made it all up. And even after being questioned about it, she’s refusing to verify the story or not.

She had excellent vision even in this dim light. But she continued to navigate as before, blindly and mindlessly as a computer would, using the electro-receptor ampullae that covered her head.

Two years before, not far from here, she had been hit by a male not much smaller than she. Despite her superior strength, he had somehow borne her to the muddy bottom. There, passive and supine, she had received both his yard-long claspers in her twin vents.

There is a disconnect between the people who try to arrive at solutions to the problem, and the people who show up for the protests-o’-the-month.

It’s a micro-scale version of the problem with democracy: your people who know how to think about a problem (or in some cases, whether there is an appropriate object-level response) don’t/can’t efficiently or effectively talk to your people who will actually show up to vote.

White America’s scary delusion: Why its sense of black humanity is so skewed

It is deeply apparent to most black people that the legal proceedings in the grand jury deliberations were a farce. Whether we consider the deliberate incorrect instructions given to jurors by the prosecutor, or the refusal to challenge the incendiary and inhumane characterizations of Michael Brown as “it,” “demon” and “hulk,” black people know that a lie has been perpetrated.

Too many white people lie comfortably in bed each night with the illusion that justice was served, that the system worked, that the evidence vindicated the view that they need to believe ? that white men do not deliberately murder black boys for sport in this day and time and get away with it. Most well-meaning white people need to believe this. For me as both teacher of different kinds of epistemology and as a black person, I do not have the luxury of believing this. I do not have the luxury of stepping over the bodies of Eric Garner, John Crawford and Tamir Rice, leaving my unasked questions strewn alongside their lifeless bodies.

      1. Irish   11 years ago

Ron Bailey linked to a Reason article from last year earlier today. In the comments, Serious Man had posted this article from 2013. It is brilliant:

It is difficult to imagine benevolent geniuses as black, it seems, but quite easy to imagine villains as black. This is telling, isn’t it? Telling that the white imagination, when provided in a book with descriptions of a “good guy” — intelligent, valuable, kind, even gentle — imagines that character as white (like themselves) but when provided with descriptions of a villain, a killer, a dangerous maniac… imagines that character as a black man. Morgan Freeman. Who has overwhelmingly portrayed “good” characters in his career as an actor. He even played God once, if memory serves. What is it, then, that causes the white imagination to provide his face as a stand-in for what they imagine as a ruthless child killer in a fictional world?

        His blackness. And only that.

WHY ARE WHITE PEOPLE SO RACIST TOWARDS MORGAN FREEMAN!?!

        1. Marktaylor   11 years ago

But Morgan Freeman playing the kind of characters he claims whites can’t imagine refutes his point. People imagine him plaing those characters.

      2. PapayaSF   11 years ago

Too bad the grand jury, which included blacks, and various black witnesses, agreed that Michael Brown acted violent and scary before his death. He wasn’t killed “for sport,” he was killed in self-defense.

      3. Sudden   11 years ago

Whether we consider the deliberate incorrect instructions given to jurors by the prosecutor, or the refusal to challenge the incendiary and inhumane characterizations of Michael Brown as “it,” “demon” and “hulk,” black people know that a lie has been perpetrated.

There is certainly no doubt that the GJ process as it unfolded in Furgadishu was a farce (presentation of exculpatory evidence, accused testifying, etc.) and the DA (among many others) should be subsequently disbarred and fired for that.

But it was equally farcical to even convene a GJ for the case. The evidence collected clearly demonstrated Mssr. Brown’s actions wrt Officer Wilson. The mob had no interest in truth nor justice, only blood. They wanted a kangaroo court to affirm their pre-conceived notions and a kangaroo court is what they got.

        1. PapayaSF   11 years ago

In most states, prosecutors have an obligation to present exculpatory evidence to grand juries.

The New Republic’s implosion continues apace.

The turmoil at The New Republic is a sharp reversal from the optimism of just two years ago when Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook, bought the magazine. His purchase was treated as a life preserver for a prestigious title that had struggled with declining circulation and the financial troubles that had afflicted print journalism. Mr. Hughes was praised for recruiting Mr. Foer, a former New Republic editor, back to the magazine. He said his acquisition was motivated by an interest in “the future of high-quality long-form journalism.”

But on Thursday, many other staff members, upset over The New Republic’s management and future, threatened to follow Mr. Foer and Mr. Wieseltier, who are widely respected in the industry, out the door, according to staff members. The writers Jonathan Chait and Ryan Lizza, both contributing editors, took to Twitter to request that they be removed from the masthead.

I’ve been playing Mass Effect, the first one, for the last few days. It’s a game that I have refused to play because of a gaming quarrel with my brother since it was released … 7 years ago?

Anyway, I can’t stop playing this… or it can’t stop playing me? In Soviet Murika, game play you!

    1. All-Seeing Monocle   11 years ago

I also didn’t play them at all (not usually my thing) until ME3 came out, then played through all tree in succession. They are all at least equally good, and I’d argue that 2 and 3 were both better than 1.

      1. Hyperion   11 years ago

They are all at least equally good, and I’d argue that 2 and 3 were both better than 1

I was really hoping that they would be. I bought the trilogy on Amazon’s Black Friday Sale. The first one is almost shockingly good. At least the story line and the visuals are outstanding for a 7 year old game.

The RPG elements and combat are so-so, but the story is epic. Again, like I said, it’s a game that plays you, but it’s not a bad thing in this case.

      2. JeremyR   11 years ago

The first one ia an RPG, the other two are basically just shooters with some vague RPG elements

Government has enabled the police to become a “jayvee” miltary, just look at Waco. How the hell are they going to “fix it?”
I’m all for police’s need for force to do their job, but the NYC case is beyond the pale. It is inexcusable. Making it about race a) makes it divisive and only about 10% of the population and b) gives the media more race war bait.

I respect the difficult job police do but that not excuse them from being public servants and filmed

OT: Anthropologist writes NYT Op-Ed about differences between Westerners and Asians, while throwing in some superiority of collectivism bullshit at the end. Her entire thesis is destroyed due to the fact that she doesn’t know shit about rice.

Rice is a finicky crop. Because rice paddies need standing water, they require complex irrigation systems that have to be built and drained each year. One farmer’s water use affects his neighbor’s yield. A community of rice farmers needs to work together in tightly integrated ways.

Not wheat farmers. Wheat needs only rainfall, not irrigation. To plant and harvest it takes half as much work as rice does, and substantially less coordination and cooperation. And historically, Europeans have been wheat farmers and Asians have grown rice.

    1. Heroic Mulatto   11 years ago

No, you dumb bitch. Rice is a rather hardy crop that can be grown in wet or dry conditions. This is why Thais, one of the first people to cultivate rice, actually have two words for rice field: “Naa“, meaning a rice paddy, and “Rai“, meaning a dry rice field.

Rice can be grown within a wide range of environmental conditions and by utilising a broad spectrum of different agronomic techniques. Differences in cultivation practise largely hinge on the amount of water required and the way in which it is harnessed and used. Similarly, the way in which rice is processed after harvest depends on whether water is used in ‘wet’ or ‘dry’ rice processing. … ‘Dryland’ rice farming does not use irrigation and the crop relies solely on rainfall for its growth and development. ‘Dryland’ rice farming takes place on well-drained soils above the flood line, where seasonal rainfall and the ability of the soil to retain water are the sole determinants of crop growth and development.

If you’re going to tell a bullshit “Just-so” story to justify the use of force to confiscate and redistribute wealth, then you should be cognizant of the basic facts concerning the props you used in your fairy tale puppet theater.

Yes, it’s so sad how China turned away from collectivism and toward more individualism, resulting in tens of millions of deaths… oh wait, the opposite happened!

    2. Irish   11 years ago

Wait, so her argument is that collectivism vs. individualism is based entirely on two kinds of crops? Really? There are no other factors influencing culture beyond what kind of agriculture they engage in?

Nor is there much rice within the Tea Party. Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, declared recently that all a man needed was a horse, a gun and the open land, and he could conquer the world.

      …?

Wheat doesn’t grow everywhere. Start-ups won’t solve all our problems. A lone cowboy isn’t much good in the aftermath of a Hurricane Katrina. As we enter a season in which the values of do-it-yourself individualism are likely to dominate our Congress, it is worth remembering that this way of thinking might just be the product of the way our forefathers grew their food and not a fundamental truth about the way that all humans flourish.

Cool, then why are the individualistic European countries filthy rich compared to the collectivist Asians? I like that she doesn’t bother actually looking at the relative success of these countries.

Liberals continue to lose their shit over the fact that cigarette taxes contributed to Garner’s death

CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin blasted Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Thursday for blaming Eric Garner’s death on New York City’s cigarette taxes, Media Matters reported.

“It’s an extrapolation,” Toobin told host Wolf Blitzer. “It’s an inclusion of an agenda item on Rand Paul’s agenda, which is perfectly appropriate to have, but one that had nothing to do with why Eric Garner is dead. He’s dead because of abusive police tactics, not because of high cigarette taxes.”

    […]

Toobin said on Thursday that Paul was “the only person” blaming Garner’s death on the cigarette tax, which was a misreading of the case.

“This confrontation took place as part of an overall police philosophy in New York of cracking down on quality of life crimes,” Toobin said. “Like turnstile-jumping. Like using squeegees on cars by homeless people. This had nothing to do with cigarette taxes.”

No shit Toobin, you just proved Paul’s point about too many stupid things being illegal. But to the stupid government can’t ever be wrong or harmful if it has the best intentions!

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. What a goddamn idiot.

Rand Paul says ‘police are told to enforce minor laws and that results in dangerous situations.’ Toobin says ‘there is an overall police philosophy where they enforce all the minor laws’ and idiotically thinks he’s disproven Paul’s argument.

It’s that disconnect on the part of progressives. Their main concern is to make sure that cops are “nice” so that they give an outwardly positive representation of government. From this stem concerns about ethnic composition, elimination of extreme scenarios like the one visited on Gardner, and public propriety. This is all held as an equal or higher priority than the original mandate of the cops.

Classical liberals by and large understand that the original mandate of cops includes lots of “not-nice” things which can bleed into areas we want cops to be “nice”, and that the best way to limit these tendencies is to limit the avenues for abuse (i.e., law) and encourage that the original mandate regarding violent and property crimes be fulfilled professionally and with recourse for the citizenry if it is violated.

IMO the expressions of these respective philosophies can be seen in the UK and Chile, respectively. The UK has “nice” cops who look nice — and are useless at fulfilling their mandate while also enforcing lots of petty bullshit. Chile has an extremely professional police force which, while polite, is not messing around (and also has arguably the least expansive mandate in Latin America).

Not coincidentally, Chile also has among the lowest crime rates on Earth despite being on the most violent continent.

It’s depressing that Chile’s success came from listening to Milton Friedman, but now, if anything, America would be vastly better off if we’d just copy everything Chile is doing.

I might very well wind up in South America. Unfortunately, I can only speak English and Portuguese and that’s sort of limiting on that continent. I don’t really understand or speak any Spanish at all. And I don’t know if English is widely spoken in Chili. But I doubt it because of how remote it is. I mean, even in Brazil, English is not very widely spoken.

            1. Irish   11 years ago

If you’re looking for countries that don’t suck where they aren’t retarded on economics and the cops probably won’t kill you, New Zealand and Australia are both good. They’re also English speaking.

Both Australia and New Zealand have VERY strict immigration laws, I believe, so that might be tough.

Australia also has grotesque hate speech laws. That’s a huge negative.

              1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

Most of the places that are high on economic liberty seem to extensively restrict immigration. Switzerland is a bitch to immigrate to (I know, I tried it).

                1. Irish   11 years ago

In the case of Switzerland, they are incredibly traditionalist. That traditionalism reflects in their extremely democratic nature and very decentralized government, but it also has some negative consequences as well. There is a Swiss Canton that didn’t let women vote until the early 1990’s – although they also are allowed to use broadswords as voter ID in that Canton, so they make up for their sexism by being badasses.

                2. Irish   11 years ago

Switzerland did awesomely reject government healthcare too, and here are some numbers regarding their economy.

They’re running a .3% surplus with taxes a full 12% of GDP lower than the Eurozone average.

Their public debt is 35% compared to 90% for the Eurozone and they have like a 3% unemployment rate.

                  Switzerland is amazing.

Hmm. You’ve made me more interested in Chile. As I look for a place to retire, I am of course interested in that country because of it’s reputation for economic freedom. But I don’t know much about it in regards to personal freedom.

          I also don’t speak Spanish.

          1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

I haven’t been there in ages, but from what I have heard it has gotten even better than the last time I was there. I am planning on scoping the place out for retirement once the girls are gone and it’s just me and wifey.

The capital (Santiago) is close to what you would expect to pay in a low-to-mid cost city in the US. The economy is still very focused on its mining interests, but fairly diversified. Lots of pretty, pretty coastline. Far less of a “party” culture than Argentina or Brazil; if the Argentines consider themselves the Italy of Latin America, the Chileans certainly see themselves as its Germany. Expect more punctuality and less of a laid-back style relative to other countries in Latin America, but also much more respect for property and less crazy politics (they have a socialist party which is very moderate).

Socially, there is much of what you’d expect from a Latin American and Catholic country. The abortion laws are famously strict, perhaps the strictest in the world; OTOH they also have relatively relaxed laws on prostitution and have a mild take on sexual orientation (last Presidential election the rightist candidate released an ad with a gay couple prominently and explicitly featured, which would be rare in most of Latin America).

            1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

Personally, I think it’s one of the best jumping-off points to travel in South America, as well. Unlike many South American countries they make it relatively easier to retire there, or so I’ve heard (I have dual American/Panamanian citizenship so I don’t need to worry about it).

Spanish knowledge is a must but it is a very intuitive and easy language to pick up; Hispanics are friendly and gesticulate often, which also helps learn the language socially. Many English-only speakers I know can speak the language at a functional level after just 6 months of immersion.

              1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

Oh, and gun laws are very good for Latin America. Nowhere near as good as the US laws, of course, but with Russia’s recent liberalization you never know. I expect most of the gun culture is rural and agrarian, as with anywhere in Latin America.

                1. Irish   11 years ago

The gun laws in Chile are one of the big pulls from the perspective of an American looking to leave the US.

I’ve been considering moving out if things get much worse, which I think they probably will, but unfortunately everywhere I’d think of going has one or two glaring anti-liberty policies that would annoy the hell out of me. Australia is overall pretty good, but their hate speech laws are atrocious.

Chile doesn’t seem to have any major deficiencies, although like Hyperion I don’t speak Spanish so I’d probably need to learn.

                  1. Sudden   11 years ago

Spanish is a fairly simple language to learn for English speakers.

There are entire cities within Los Angeles where you could rent a house for a year and find yourself fluent by the time the lease is up.

I’m also interested in Uruquay. We’re always watching documentaries about it on Globo TV and it looks very interesting.

Of all the drawbacks about Brazil economically and security wise, I always feel more free there than I do in the US, don’t let anyone who’s never been there bullshit you about that. So there’s at least that, and the climate, if you like hot and humid.

                1. The Immaculate Trouser   11 years ago

Panama is an absurdly cool and varied place for being so small, and Panama City has gotten *huge*. It used to be ridiculously corrupt and poor, and now it’s ridiculously corrupt and moderately rich (mostly on account of implementation of free-market reforms by corrupt administration and judiciary). Lots of Americans, so you’ll probably find people who can speak English most places you go (though not as many as in Costa Rica). In Chiraqui I’ve been to David, which is very pretty and cheap as far as tourist-y destinations in Panama go.

Uruguay seems cool, but I have never been. From what I’ve heard, it’s basically a suburb of Buenos Aires that’s never gotten over that basic fact, but on the plus side never suffered Peronism so it’s a bit more sane than Argentina.

I know what you mean about Latin America “feeling” freer; objectively law in the US is more free but I never felt personally stifled in Latin America and greatly miss its rhythms and the people.

The syntax is similar, but it’s very different.

Not saying we can’t learn it, I just see learning a 3rd language as challenging enough that I see it as a disadvantage, because it really is challenging for most people our age to become fluent in a 3rd language. And not being fluent in a language where almost no one speaks your native language and living there… Well, ask my wife, she struggled a lot and still does sometimes living here in the US, even after 5 years, although her progress is amazing the last year or so. But a 3rd language? I don’t know.

FWIW, I have a friend who is Mexican who studied abroad in Brazil, and she said that her knowing Spanish didn’t help much when it came to Portuguese.

It will help some, but not that much. It will only help in that the syntax of the language is similar, and that there are a few words that are the same, and some words that are spelled the same, but are not pronounced the same, etc.

My wife works with some girls from central American and sometimes they think, since she looks Latin, that she speaks Spanish. So they try to talk to her in Spanish. She can understand them, somewhat, but when she tries to talk to them in Portuguese, they can’t understand her too much at all. The accent of the language, the way it sounds is very different.

Just to basically tell you how different the languages are:

                    Thank you:

                    Spanish: Gracias

                    Portuguese: Obrigado

They are 2 almost completely different languages.

Really, I’m pretty much fluent in Portuguese and I can barely understand any Spanish.

Except for gun rights. People just don’t care about stupid laws and they are not enforced. I can give you example of this all day.

You really don’t have any idea how close to coming from nowhere and beating Dilma that Aecio Neves was. He’s not Ron Paul by any means, but he’s pretty far right of Obama. Well, ok, Dilma is right of Obama. But Neves is a pretty pro-business guy. I can’t imagine him saying ‘You didn’t build that!’.

                can be unsafe

                That’s putting it mildly.

                As in, ludicrously mildly.

They have more than twice as many murders as the US despite having 55% the population.

The police have killed more people in the last 4 years than American cops have killed in the last 40.

Your veneration of Brazil vs. the US is, well, fucking idiotic Hyperion.

                1. Redmanfms   11 years ago

Correction, 62%. That doesn’t improve the outcome much in Brazil’s favor.

Yeah, if I ever leave the US, I’m giving Chile a very strong look. I enjoyed my time in Argentina, but the politics there are way too crazy. The culture and food might not be as good in Chile, but I’ve heard good things from people who’ve visited. I also speak Spanish at a conversational level and could achieve total fluency pretty quickly if I lived there.

Yeah, I got nicked once for “Abuse of power”. That means revving your engine.

I’m currently watching Peter Pan Live on NBC.

It’s a complete trainwreck in every conceivable way, but I think the girl playing Peter Pan is giving me a deeply disturbing and moderately criminal fetish.

    1. Hyperion   11 years ago

I thought that Peter Pan was a girl?

      1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

Hey baby, wanna dress up like an eternally underage boy?

        1. Irish   11 years ago

Look, Jesse, it doesn’t make me gay that I’m attracted to Allison Williams when she’s dressed like a 13 year old boy.

          It makes me human.

          1. Sudden   11 years ago

It would perhaps make you gay if you were attracted to her co-star in “Girls”.

            That or a rapist.

          2. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

I was just explaining to Hyp why it was a “deeply disturbing and moderately criminal fetish”, I wasn’t planning on overnighting you a “Welcome to sodomy: a beginners manual” booklet.

            1. Irish   11 years ago

I think it’s cute that you think I don’t already have like 50 textbooks entirely devoted to sodomy.

              1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

I just assumed your materials would all be geared toward the bad kind of sodomy.

                1. Los Doyers   11 years ago

                  Okay, Auric.

                  1. jesse.in.mb   11 years ago

No, Los Doyers, he doesn’t think there is a good kind.

And lastly, a bit of rage inducing hypocrisy: journalists who published of a list of gun owners and their addresses are asked to put “this home is proudly gun free” signs in their yards. Hilarity ensues.

4:50 is what makes me so fucking angry. “I’m against guns!!!” as his armed guard is standing there.

Christ! I recorded Stossel and caught the beginning of Dobbs coming down on the cop’s side of Garner.

There is no right and wrong. There is only taking the opposite position of our opponents. FUCK, REPUBLICANS ARE STUPID!!!

    1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

      They’re robots.

      10 INPUT OTHER TEAM’S OPINION
      20 LET MY OPINION = -1*(OTHER TEAM’S OPINION)
      30 SHOUT MY OPINION

From an article about the woman murdered in the United Arab Emirates:

The clip shows police ambushing a mansion, where they arrest a woman they say is the suspect.

Because the root cause of terrorism is poverty.
