National Guard Steps Up Role in Ferguson
Tuesday night was much calmer than Monday
The St. Louis area experienced a relatively calm night Tuesday. The scenes at protests in Ferguson and across St. Louis were quite different than those that broke out immediately following the announcement that Darren Wilson would not be indicted in the shooting death of Michael Brown.
Monday night, 12 building fires were set, and several dozen windows were broken out. Widespread gunfire was reported throughout the night, which lead to a temporary flight restriction at Lambert-STL airport and a decision to, at times, keep firefighters from approaching burning buildings in unsecured areas. The burned body of a 20-year-old man was also discovered in a car very close to where Michael Brown was killed, but it is unclear at this time what connection that may have had to the ongoing unrest in Ferguson.

Monday's violence and damage led to strong criticism of officials for underutilizing the National Guard to prevent law breaking. On Tuesday, Governor Nixon announced he was tripling the number of troops responding, and their presence was quite visible. National Guard troops also played a different role than they did the night before, with soldiers actually going into crowds of protestors to make arrests. Troops were also stationed in front of businesses on at-risk roads—something the already looted/burned businesses would have no doubt appreciated the night before.
When asked if he had been unprepared on Monday night, Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said that, "none of us could have imagined last night would be what it was…we've never seen anything like this." I'm guessing the man isn't getting much sleep these days, but it's fairly alarming that the on-scene commander of the Highway Patrol wasn't familiar with, or hadn't taken any lessons from, past instances of unrest following controversial and racially divisive judicial decisions.

The St. Louis County Police Chief John Belmar reported in his semi-regular 1:30 am press conference that 44 arrests were made Tuesday night, 15 fewer than the night before. Of these, 40 were for failure to disperse/obey a lawful order, and four were felony arrests. One person was charged for an illegal weapon, and three were charged with assaulting police officers. He also announced that windows were broken out at Ferguson City Hall, and a Ferguson police car out front was set ablaze. Police moved in with riot gear and fired tear gas to clear the area (this was the only time tear gas was used last night). Additionally, a number of businesses' windows were broke and one private citizen's vehicle was burned, but no building fires were reported and there was only one known case of attempted looting. The unrest from Ferguson is far from over, but things appear to be getting calmer as the area tries to move beyond the grand jury decision.

Not bad. I give it three hankies, what say you?
Last night CNN was running the news ticker at the bottom of the screen. Interspersed with a bunch of items about Ferguson were a couple of quick lines about the protesters in Hong Kong, as the only other news pieces they ran. They did not differentiate them from the Ferguson situation or even mention they've been protesting for weeks about their political representation. No, the instigators at CNN wanted to make it seem like there are huge protests in Hong Kong because of the Ferguson situation.
(As if anyone in Hong Kong could give a shit, but dammit, there's nothing more important in the world than Ferguson!)
For Hong Kongers, what could be more important than Mike Brown? Check your privilege.
The guy looks Jewish. I have heard dimwit Jews connected with the system making a living off it (my dad's wife's brother). They all sound like this.
Yeah, riots breaking out over a controversial court ruling in a racially-tinged case? Unheard of.
and 8 hours to form groups under cover of darkness?
Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol should lose his job for admitting to that, along with the rest of "us" who lack imagination.
Tin soldiers and (Jay) Nixon's coming
On Monday they were on their own
Fat guys in BDUs? I approve.
And midgets!
Cowboys and Indians and mi- mi- midgets!
There is literally a midget in uniform in one of those photos.
They can't dicriminate against the vertically challenged.
All this over Bill Cosby drugging white women and putting his penis in their mouths?!?!
Well, hello there, National Guard, so nice of you to FINALLY SHOW UP!
Monday night, 12 building fires were set, and several dozen windows were broken out.
Meh, that was just a typical Saturday night for my Boy Scout troop when I was a kid.
The National Guard....they appear to have been armed.
But, were they issued ammunition?
One guy had the bullet. The trick is, no one knows who has the bullet, so you have to assume they all do.
Of course, if they had deployed those troops from the start, then they'd be criticized for cracking down too hard and probably accused of being racist for assuming that there would be riots. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't really.
Strangely, the managed to announce National Guard attendance a week in advance and still not have them show up on the actual night of the verdict.
If one was in a paranoid mood, one might think that the Missouri government allowed the rioting and looting to take place deliberately.
Few points:
1. By annoucing the imminent rioting a week in advance, they gave out of towners plenty of time to drive to Fergeson. There are plenty of people, not just in St. Louis, but from further away, who would be happy to show up at a riot to cause mayhem and steal stuff. Giving them all plenty of notice ENSURED that those people would be drawn to Fergusen like a magnet.
2. Allowing rioters to loot, burn, and destroy property effectively discredits any legitimate protestors that might be demonstrating. It also reinforces racial stereotypes of blacks as violent, theiving, criminals.
If you're a racist police department, step 1 (draw out of town trouble makers), and step 2 (let them loot and burn), sounds like a very effective way to make sure that there is no public sympathey for the black people in your district. The property destruction is an added bonus because it keeps the area economically depressed.
It was clearly the case that Ferguson police were not stopping looters and arsonists in the days soon after Michael Brown was killed.
The only way to stop looters and rioters is a shoot on sight order with guys carrying rifles so they could take people out from way down the street. Soon people get the idea that even approaching a store isn't such a good idea.
Yeah, someone like you would have been all for that.
Think about it this way: if it was your intention to create a riot, what would you have done differently?
2. Allowing rioters to loot, burn, and destroy property effectively discredits any legitimate protestors that might be demonstrating. It also reinforces racial stereotypes of blacks as violent, theiving, criminals.
Somehow this is the fault of the police or the officials? What a bizarro world view of things. How about not rioting so people will start seeing that the stereotypes aren't true? Nothing is ever the fault of the "oppressed" I guess.
You're neglecting point 1 - many of the looters may not even be residents of Ferguson. They announced loudly that riots would be happening a week before.
You may not realize that there are a shit ton of people who probably felt they missed out on the fun and specifically drove to Ferguson with the express intent of rioting.
"MarkinLA" will find evidence that black people suck, regardless of what actually happened. You're wasting your time.
No MarkinLA will point out the pathetic anti-white snivelers who constant make excuses for every black pathology on the "racists" instead of on the people actually doing wrong. Hey that sounds like you!!
If the national guard were there in full force and the rioters kept their hands in their pockets out fear of getting shot you would be crying that the NG wasn't necessary because these people were peaceful and the only reason the NG was there was because the ignorant "racists" thought they would riot.
How about not rioting so people will start seeing that the stereotypes aren't true?
How convenient for your argument that you simply ignore the years of black residents being hassled by white police for victimless crimes and simply focus on the few days of black residents hassling white police.
Mike Brown deserved to get arrested, not murdered. But you just see the stereotypes you want to see and ignore the stereotypes you don't like.
Can one justify rioting? Not really. But one cannot honestly justify the actions of the government, yet those actions not only came first, they've also lasted far longer and with lots of people actually trying to justify them. If you are incapable of seeing the forest for the trees, no other observation of your is of any value.
Mike Brown deserved to get arrested, not murdered.
So it is the cops fault Brown rushed him? You people get more pathetic as the day goes on.
Stereotypes are such for a reason. Want that to change, change the behavior first. When even the Mexicans don't want blacks in their neighborhoods - that is saying something.
Well, you know, criminal protestors get tired - after burning most of the commercial district, there simply weren't any more building to torch or goods to steal. Gov Nixon should be impeached just as fast as the law allows. He has transformed St Louis into a jungle and sat on his hands while Ferguson burned and people were shot, killed, set afire. In 55 years of watching govts act, I have never seen as irresponsible an action as Nixon's, although our President came close when he implied Wilson should have ben indicted - good luck with your pathetically political attempt to obtain a Federal indictment, Barry. Brown was a sleazebucket who any defense attorney would have a field day with. It would be easier obtaining an indictment against Brown's "parents" for raising such a person.
but it's fairly alarming that the on-scene commander of the Highway Patrol wasn't familiar with, or hadn't taken any lessons from, past instances of unrest following controversial and racially divisive judicial decisions.
Why should he be less clueless than the prosecutor?
It's puzzling that Wilson wasn't indicted at a minimum for the third shot fired. In Garner the SC held that you can't fire even at a fleeing felon to keep him from escaping, unless you or a civilian is in imminent danger. That would not have been the case here.
Missouri law is different from SC law.
Apparently in MO, you can shoot at a fleeing felon to apprehend him.
Of course, in this case, Wilson claims that the suspect was actually charging him.
And, of course, seven African-American witnesses corroborated Wilson's story in front of the grand jury.
I continue to be amazed at how dismissive people are of these witnesses -- actual eyewitnesses who made these statements under oath, with nothing to gain and very much to lose. Yet everyone wants to instead believe what someone said to a reporter back in August. It's the equivalent of basing all your dissertation research on Wikipedia (which actually would likely even be more credible than the media's original 'witnesses'.)
After the invisible gorilla experiment, I am dismissive of all witnesses.

From my experience working with the National Guard when I was active duty, I predict they will stand around and bicker.
I have no clue why people think they're a solution to anything, beyond the fact that most situations they're sent to, such as riots, tend to clear up on their own. You may as well send in the fucking Peace Corps.
Libertarians have been promoting the right to bear arms since forever. Supposing a business owner in Ferguson were to shoot a "protester" who was looting his store, or trying to set it afire? Would Reason back them up?
One of the objectives of the protest against Wilson, as well as against George Zimmerman, was to discredit the idea of a law abiding citizen from using firearms in self defense. If it is illegitimate to fire in defense of one's life, then do you have a right to fire at someone threatening your property.
Point is, Ferguson is not just about Brown/Wilson. It's about disarming American citizens.
