Tonight's episode of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, repeats three hours later), she is good. Here's some red meat for ya:

* Libertarian TV icon John Stossel talks Jonathan Gruber.

* Party Panelists John Tierney (beloved New York Times science writer) and Mike Baker (ex-CIA rager) react to President Barack Obama's announcement that he'll be unveiling some executive action on immigration tomorrow night. The two will also discuss Al Sharpton's unpaid taxes and San Diego's landmark sewage-treatment policies for combating the California drought.

* Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), many libertarians' favorite Democrat in Congress, tries to defend the leadership re-election of Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), talks about the NSA-reform challenges post-USA Freedom Act, and uncorks an interesting answer about who he'd vote for in a Rand vs. Hillary election.

* Fox Human Resources scold Bernie Maxsmith is back with Two Minutes Hate, featuring some of the choicest insults from you, the beloved Hit & Run commenters.

Other topics being discussed include America's stubbornly persistent numerical decline, the sheer awfulness of new key GOP congressional leaders, lumbersexuals vs. metrosexuals, and more.

The absence of insults from me is an insult. Because I stopped watching.

I'm fascinated that she apparently was outraged at Soave for implying that Valenti thinks rape jokes cause rape. Because curiously she's aware of how insane that sounds.

Valenti literally said in her indignant response to Gillespie on Twitter that rape jokes "give rapists license to rape."

Isn't that tantamount to saying rape jokes create rape culture which causes rape?

        1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

Soave is an excellent Italian white wine.

        2. Irish   11 years ago

Valenti's twitter rant was fucking hilarious. She started off by claiming it was an unfair representation of her views, then said 'I don't think jokes cause rape, I think they prop up rape culture.'

But the point of this rape culture nonsense is that it ALLEGEDLY CAUSES RAPE. She's therefore explicitly saying that jokes cause rape culture and rape culture causes rape, hence jokes cause rape.

She's so fucking stupid she can't even follow her own arguments and is apparently unaware of the existence of the transitive property.

          1. Grand Moff Serious Man   11 years ago

Rape jokes don't cause rape but we can reduce rape by cracking down on rape jokes and language.

What other things can we extrapolate from that logic? Let's see:

Tom & Jerry promotes the mutilation of cats. What kind of sick fuck laughs at a cat having a steam iron dropped on his head?

Wily E. Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons promotes violence towards desert canines

South Park promotes the idea that you can kill the parents of your enemy and cook them into chili

          3. KLafayette   11 years ago

Well, you see, logic is inherently violently masculine, so fuck your patriarchal transitive property.

It depresses me that these ideas are seriously entertained in the cultural discourse nowadays, particularly among my generation. This shit is ushering in a new Dark Age.

        3. BuSab Agent   11 years ago

If I accept that premise, what does that say about Mel Brooks' body of works?

"For people who think they're smarter than everyone else, libertarians sure can be narrow-minded, simplistic thinkers."

      /pounds table laughing.

      I stopped there.

      1. Irish   11 years ago

Come on. Amanda Marcotte is such a serious thinker that she obviously is way brighter than we are.

I was an early adopter of Twitter, getting an account in 2007. I quickly fell in love with the service and how it dumped a constant stream of interesting information, insightful comments and jokes into my life. I particularly enjoyed the ease with which I could tweet at someone I didn't know and, with the "mentions" feed, get feedback on my work from smart people all around the world.

All of which is why I'm saddened to realize that it's time to permanently delete my mentions feed and give up looking at anyone tweeting @AmandaMarcotte. While there are still plenty of people who tweet at me with helpful comments and thoughtful opinions, including people who disagree with me, in the past few months (years?), most of what I get is harassment from users harboring a bilious hatred of feminists. Or, sometimes, just a hatred of me, a person they do not know.

It's like reading a mixture of Shakespeare and Aristotle, only with a pornographic sensibility that I find most...alluring.

        1. anon   11 years ago

I quickly fell in love with the service and how it dumped a constant stream of interesting information, insightful comments and jokes into my life.

Is this sarcastic? Cause holy shit, I have *never* seen a constant stream of "interesting information" or "insightful comments" on fucking twatter.

        2. MJGreen   11 years ago

Or, sometimes, just a hatred of me, a person they do not know.

The nerve! Only a monster would do such a thing! Marcotte is far more civilized.

I think this just about covers it:

Well, of course culture can't shape you, if you're a libertarian, because you've bought into the myth of Personal Responsibility and Free Will so completely that every action you take, from putting on pants before leaving the house to calling your mom on her birthday to shaving is all done 100% conscientiously, as a positive affirmation of your identity.

God it must be exhausting to be a libertarian, to approach every life decision and interaction with a tabula rasa understanding of culture and context, and to deliberate every choice you make against your Ultimate Personal Sense of Self.

      1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

        /pounds table laughing.

Do you people ever wonder Why didn't the republicans in the 8 year term they had never ever deported all of the illegal aliens?
    Let me explain:

    1. Republicans represent commercial Interests
    2. Illegal Aliens work for below the going rate in just about everything they do.
    3. Companies don't have to pay payroll taxes nor do they have to offer benefits, paid vacations, comply with labor laws, etc. etc. etc.
    4. By having an illegal population, the median salary of the labor the illegals do goes DOWN for the Americans.
    5. In the meantime, the Republicans use the RACIST WHITE nature to direct Anger at the Mexican and not to them or the Employer that hires the illegal.

So, it's in the Republican's and Company's BEST interest to keep the Illegals here and to occasional deport a few and to KEEP THEM illegal as once they are LEGAL, companies must comply with Labor Laws.

In the meantime, the republicans and the commercial interests use the RACIST in America as STOOGES

he Biggest Benefactor of having Illegals Here and having No Legal status is COMPANIES and the RICH. And, of course the middle-to-upper-middle that Hire Consuella to clean the House and Jose to Mow the Lawn.

Once Legal, these people will pay taxes and FICA, making the Gob-Mint Richer. A big no-no for libertarians.

I thought it was because there were like 20 million of them and there was no way to do this.

he Biggest Benefactor of having Illegals Here and having No Legal status is COMPANIES and the RICH. And, of course the middle-to-upper-middle that Hire Consuella to clean the House and Jose to Mow the Lawn.

    What horseshit.

'metrosexuals' was 90s urban heterosexual men who got into things like going to spas, getting their ass waxed, using 3 kinds of skin cream, wearing designer underwear, etc.... even though they weren't gay.

'lumbersexuals'? I can only imagine they're the current bearded beta-boys who live in Brooklyn and could be gay or straight depending on whichever requires less work.

I don't find anything about them particularly 'sexual'. I mean (trigger warning = have a strong stomach)... this... i wouldn't clean my toilet with that person wrapped around a stick

Bingo. Why must the "-sexual" suffix be tacked on to every male fashion trend du jour that has absolutely fuck-all to do with sexuality? It's like men can't make any aesthetic choice without the unstated implication that their style preferences are somehow associated with how or with whom they use their dicks.

Well, i do like the lipstick. Dreamcatchers don't really help.

    - Matt: Blue on Blue newness? First showing of a darker blue shirt from Matt. We normally prefer the 'blue x3' thing to have more distinct differences in shade (e.g. navy suit, sky shirt, royal tie), but this isn't bad - particular as a new kind of variation. People do this same formula sometimes with different colors as well (grey shirt, silver tie; cream shirt, light gold-ish tie). It does works as a style alternative to the PowerSuit for a TV host.

    - Kmele: Hey - something we actually really like w/ the multicolor plaids. We were iffy on the "Boyd Crowder" (sportcoat, plaid shirt, buttoned to neck, no tie) but this is pretty cool as a 'preppie' kind of style reference. It almost wants a little alligator on the V-neck. We draw the line, however, at things like 'school crests'. Fuck that Hilfiger garbage.

    2. GILMORE   11 years ago

      ?

I'd guess if and when they comment on it, the net-net would be similar to my own opinion

      - We do need comprehensive immigration reform
      - this isn't it
      - its a complete abuse of power
      - you can't force legislation via executive action and this isn't at all serving to achieve a 'better policy', and instead serves to simply create grounds for years of hyperventilating partisan bitch-fights which will not get us towards improving the status quo, and probably increases the risk of making things worse.

      or not, who knows.

      1. anon   11 years ago

I agree. Also, sets the precedent for the next president (whoever it is) to just revoke the "granted" citizenship... which basically means laws don't matter anymore.

        1. GILMORE   11 years ago

As far as i understand, the planned 'executive order' isn't going to provide anything in the way of 'a path to citizenship', but rather tells immigration officials 'not to enforce' deportations against illegals who have children. (Ankerbabees) I think there is also a provision to grant them expedited green cards, which, as far as i understand it, they could be eligible for anyway, but do not pursue out of fears about the deportation thing (under current law, they'd have to 'leave and re-apply' or something?)

          1. Heroic Mulatto   11 years ago

So a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?

            1. GILMORE   11 years ago

from what little I've read/heard, the actual details of what he plans only affects a 3-4 million people (out of a guesstimated 13m illegals) and doesn't change existing law but rather changes 'enforcement' priority.

The significance is it throws a ball into the GOP court to try and force them to bring legislation that changes the status quo - most likely to 'undo' his approach, and thus look like dicks.

This is my very superficial understanding of the thing

              1. Heroic Mulatto   11 years ago

                and thus look like dicks

To whom? Perceived anti-immigrant sentiment is at a higher level than it has been for some time. And it gives the GOP a chance to look like it's getting something done in the "figh back" against Obama.

                1. anon   11 years ago

Oh my fucking god. Please don't let "FIGHT BACK!" be the GOP's new theme.

Unfortunately, from the various stump speeches I've heard from their candidates across the country this past election, it seems to be.

to the dreaded 'millenials' and minorities

I also think that any legislation that the GOP tries to pass will be the subject of such intense fighting that it will tarnish a lot of GOP contenders for failing to be 'Sekure the Border!' enough. See what happened the last time they tried it. it blew up in their face because they actually tried to be 'quasi reasonable'

          2. anon   11 years ago

(under current law, they'd have to 'leave and re-apply' or something?)

They have to go back to the border and re-enter, but it's really a formality.

As far as the rest goes, that's about exactly like rule by man instead of rule by law.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think our current immigration system (if you could even call it that) works. I also think that everyone's better off when people are free, including freedom to move; I just think the only way to guarantee freedoms is through the rule of law over the rule of man.

Can someone please explain to me how Tony can square this argument from the Obamacare article:

Sure it is. As long as there is a concerted effort to collapse your presidency no matter the cost, obfuscation is very much an important part of making policy.

Gruber's only problem is that he's not a politician and thus says things bluntly. But no matter what he or Obama said, the law does what it does, and the American people don't have the first fucking clue what that is. And that's not because proponents of the law lied to them.

with his alleged love of majoritarian Democracy? If the public is actively lied to about what laws entail, then they clearly are not capable of making informed democratic choices as the information they have available is inaccurate.

He is such a vile piece of shit. I've never met a human being more sickening than Tony. I'm surprised he can type here given how much time he probably spends down at the local IRS office sucking the black off the boots of some random bureaucrat.

    1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

He's a govt worker. That means he doesn't work.

      1. sasob   11 years ago

What's doing spending so much time here? What is he - a government spy or something?

    2. John Titor   11 years ago

He apparently thinks backroom deals are fine too. The closest I can come up with is that Americans have a right to vote for the President, but after that they have to shut up and accept everything he does universally for the next four years. Unless he's Republican I guess.

      1. anon   11 years ago

Tony frequently confuses backroom deals with backdoor deals.

    3. Sevo   11 years ago

Irish, there is no consistent thought involved in that statement.
I'm pretty sure it can be best understood as: "I got suckered, but I'm still a bleever and I'll throw shit at the wall in the hopes something sticks!"
A 'concerted effort to collapse the presidency' for example; isn't that what Tony did when Bush was POTUS? Does that now qualify as an excuse for Bush's lies?
Independent thought is not one of his skills. If Obo (or whatever daddy figure is instantly appropriate) isn't telling him what to think, he's sorta stuck. Hence the word salad.

      1. Irish   11 years ago

I'm sure Tony would have found this argument reasonable regarding the Iraq War:

Sure it is. As long as there is a concerted effort to collapse your presidency no matter the cost, obfuscation is very much an important part of making policy.

Paul Wolfowitz' only problem is that he's not a politician and thus says things bluntly. But no matter what he or Bush said, the war does what it does, and the American people don't have the first fucking clue what that is. And that's not because proponents of the war lied to them.

        1. Sevo   11 years ago

Obviously he wouldn't, since consistency is no more to his advantage than is independent thought.
The man is flat dishonest. I swear at him as it is as good a response to such mendacity as any other; there is no possibility that honest argument can affect his views.
He is a religious bleever; nothing more, nothing less.

  97. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

I just realized they're going to get sued by Red Bull. And possibly Kindle.

  98. anon   11 years ago

Holy shit Juan Williams' voice is annoying.

  99. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Huh. The previous generation's Kindle Foster is on Lou Dobbs right now.

    1. anon   11 years ago

Man that voice... Nails on a chalkboard.

Wow. I'm old. I remember Chalkboards.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Yeah we say "midi on a smartboard" now.

        1. GILMORE   11 years ago

          MIDI?

all my music gear is still MIDI. I'm all post-old-school (EMU Sp12, MPC2000), and pre-new-school (Reason, Ableton, etc) Couldn't even sell it if i tried, most likely

          1. Paul.   11 years ago

            Everything still uses MIDI.

            1. GILMORE   11 years ago

really? the most common rig i see these days with the hip set is a keyboard hooked to a laptop w/ Reason/Ableton/Cubase via USB

yeah, i know the language is probably still MIDI, but my studio setup was basically one big spaghetti farm of gizmos all MIDI cabled to each other. I was something of a headache. Now, most 'instruments' being virtual (what i meant by 'new school') it seems less of a hassle altogether

    2. GILMORE   11 years ago

Your spellcheck turns 'Kmele' into Kindle?

      damn you amazon!

  100. Derpetologist   11 years ago

I feel this deserves an encore. A guy took turns waving an ISIS flag and an Israeli flag at Berkeley. Guess which one offended more students.

    1. John Titor   11 years ago

I think they may have to retest this. Because when I see a Jewish guy waving an ISIS flag I know it's bullshit.

      1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

I think they should redo it with Nazi, Communist, and Confederate flags.

        1. John Titor   11 years ago

Only as long as the Nazi guy is Jewish, the Communist guy has a monocle and cigar, and the Confederate guy is black.

            Is George Soros free?

      2. GILMORE   11 years ago

        Jewish guy smoking a cigarette.

Yeah, 'not likely an actual ISIS supporter'

        1. Notorious G.K.C.   11 years ago

The only guy who rebuked him while he carried his ISIS flag was the don't smoke guy.

    2. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Bless those people who troll Berkeley. They're doing the Lord's work.

    3. GILMORE   11 years ago

Trolling berkley students is... like .... child abuse, or something.

they're so retarded that its almost not fair.

Also, he didn't really give his ISIS performance a chance. It looked like he was filming himself, not engaging students.

    4. Handlebar   11 years ago

How many people would even recognize an ISIS flag?

  101. Derpetologist   11 years ago

Terrorist bloopers. Needs more Benny Hill

Apparently some people don't know 'blowback' is a thing.

      1. anon   11 years ago

Is that like when a hooker spits it back into your mouth?
