Teen's Death Ruled by Natural Causes, Was Tased Five Times at Hospital

Nineteen-year-old George King, Jr. was brought to the hospital in May by a social worker after suffering multiple seizures. He suffered another seizure at the hospital and reportedly became aggressive and combative when healthcare workers tried to move him to ICU. Baltimore cops were called in after he kicked a pregnant nurse and then several security guards. Police tased King five times during a struggle that reportedly lasted an hour, King went into cardiac arrest, suffered another seizure and went into a coma. He was eventually declared brain dead and taken off life support. CBS Baltimore reports:
The Chief Medical Examiner found an abscess on the spinal cord and infection of the membranes surrounding the brain led to the extensive destruction of the cells comprising the brain, which likely contributed to the cardiac arrest. The autopsy also revealed no credible evidence that either the restraint of the King by medical personnel or law enforcement, the use of the Taser, or the administration of any of the sedating medications caused or contributed to King's death.
No criminal charges will be filed.
Whether or not police acted appropriately (he wasn't shot nor does he appear to have suffered any injuries from physical hits), it's a difficult situation not made simpler by the muddy and muddying nature of Tasers, as explored in this Reason TV video:

"he kicked a pregnant nurse and then several security guards"
At first glance, it appears the Taser was called for.
Yeah, I'm not sure this guy totally falls in the victim bucket, though it's hard to tell whether the cops went overboard. They so often do, after all.
What does death by natural causes, mean, anyway? Humans are part of nature. So is all of the matter and energy at our disposal.
Electricity is a natural force, therefore King's death as a result of the 25k volts of electricity introduced into his body by police is a natural phenomenon. Sad really. There was no way to avoid it.
I blame the Big Bang and the Prime Mover Unmoved. Cuff him, boys.
That's zombie talk right there!
I believe that "natural causes" generally means "disease process" or "aging process" ... as opposed to an injury (caused by self / someone else / accident / animal / etc.). The abscess on the spine that screwed up his brain would be a natural cause of death.
He had multiple seizures before the police got involved. It sounds like his brain was effectively rotting based on the CME's description -- which would certainly help explain the multiple seizures, and could easily explain the cardiac arrest. His brain/spine could easily have been toast well before the cops arrived.
I'm not an ME and don't have the all details (of course), but based on what I've read, I'm not sure the police contributed anything to his death.
What happened to holding him down and 500ccs of thorazine? How could this struggle have lasted over an hour?
You would think they would have some, I dunno, medical means for subduing him. I mean, House had patients subdued all the time.
I don't see where the cops are to blame. At least initially. He was already undergoing seizures and was apparently not in his right mind when the police showed up. Unfortunately, that's often a recipe for a tragic encounter with cops.
Why couldn't they put the kid on the ground, cuff him and get him on a gurney in less than an hour? That part is odd.
*Why couldn't they put the kid on the ground*
Why couldn't they just "shoot to wound"?
Why couldn't they just let that guy do 120 mph through the city streets without chasing him?
Why couldn't they just let that big thug walk down the middle of the street with his box of stolen Swisher Sweets?
Why can't they just let all the criminals out of jail?
You people sound like children who have watched way, way too much TV.
And you sound like a retarded cunt.
Police tased King five times during a struggle that reportedly lasted an hour...
Nothing takes an hour to accomplish.
STEVE SMITH raping an entire bus full of tourists?
STEVE SMITH MAKE LOVE RAPE TOURISTS IN FIVE MINUTE TIME!
WEREN'T THAT A MAN? STEVE SMITH SPELL THAT "M"......"A"....."N"....
/Mannish Boy
Wait. How big is the bus? One of those big city articulated buses?
Innocent looking black kid in the top photo. Malicious looking white cop in the video at the bottom [perhaps from a TV or movie]. I'm not going to read the article and it's not because I'm lazy (this time, anyway). You wanted me to read the article, didn't you, Ed?
+1 hoodie and Skittles?
At least the cops went home safely.
I think this should just be the standard boilerplate conclusion of any investigation.
"He was gonna die anyway. Some day."
Just using the story this doesn't seem to rise to the normal level of police brutality. It looks like the kid had medical issue causing him problems long before the tazing happened.

He wasn't out on some street corner, terrorizing people. He was in a hospital, surrounded by medical professionals equipped with all the latest technology, yet he ended up being tased repeatedly by cops, and died. He apparently would have died, in any case, but this seems to be a fairly serious dereliction of duty by the hospital staff, not to mention the default resort to electro-torture by the cops.
*fairly serious dereliction of duty by the hospital staff, *
Yeah, hospital staff should just resign themselves to being kicked until they miscarry.
"He wasn't out on some street corner, terrorizing people. He was in a hospital, surrounded by medical professionals"
He was in a hospital surrounded by medical professionals whose asses he was kicking. Pray tell what, of all the 'latest technology,' would you use against an extremely violent patient? It's tragic, but using violence to protect yourself or others from violence is acceptable, even if there is a medical or psychological cause for the initial act. You can argue about using tasers, but not about the acceptability of needing to use violence to stop this guy.
How much do you actually know about medicine and what's involved in treating a patient?
1) Chemical restraints are either IM or IV... I wouldn't get into a fight with a patient when I have a needle full of drugs in my hand, I would wait until he is at least temporarily physically restrained. Chemical restraints are more often than not for patient safety, so they don't injure themselves from fighting against physical restraints, not because you simply cannot physically restrain them. Unless, of course, a blow-gun...
2) Highlighting a case of police using violence against a violent individual typically isn't a good game plan when there are far too many instances of cops using violence against non-violent individuals. If it was my pregnant wife he kicked, he would be lucky I wasn't there and armed. Postictal folks get nasty, sometimes, but you gotta protect yourself, and in this case it sounds like the cops were called in as a force-equalizer after this guy thrashed some people.
3) There are odd things about this case, like the fact that it went on for an hour. But, having been in the back of an ambulance numerous times with violent patients, let me tell you that retard strength is very real, and it's no joke. Was he in a room, or in a hallway? Were there other employees and patients that were in danger? I'm not one for the 'you werent there' card cops and sympathizers pull, but this didn't happen in an empty alleyway or a rundown crack house, it was in a busy hospital.
Agreed. Except for the part where you're a regular posting under a throw away handle.
I would own it.
Regular reader, recent poster.
Blah blah blah cop-hate.
"The autopsy also revealed no credible evidence that either the restraint of the King by medical personnel or law enforcement, the use of the Taser, or the administration of any of the sedating medications caused or contributed to King's death."
Because an hour long struggle and multiple electrocutions couldn't possible have anything to do with cardiac arrest and seizures.
How about we empirically test that theory on the Medical Examiner?
This story isn't primarily about the use of force, but the government, yet again, pissing on us and telling us it's raining. They're just laughing at us now.
"Hey, the dog ate my hard drive. And his. And his. And his too."
"Not even a smidgen of corruption."
"If you like your doctor, you can keep him."
"The cupboard is bare. There's no more cuts to make."
As usual Ed, you are reaching on this one. I bet Columbia is soooo proud of you!
