Charter School Supporters Hold a Massive Rally in New York City
Protesters demand "Great Schools Now."
In the latest show of its political and organizational muscle, New York's school choice movement held a rally in lower Manhattan this morning to draw attention to a recent report by the non-profit Families for Excellent Schools, which found that 1 out of 4 traditional public schools in New York City are failing. (Ninety percent of students in these failing schools score below grade level in both reading and math, the report found.)
There were about 21,000 protesters, according to the organizers, made up primarily of charter school kids, parents, and teachers. They held signs demanding "Great Schools Now" and wore red shirts bearing the rally's slogan, "Don't Steal Possible." A handful of state lawmakers were on hand to show their support, including Senate co-Majority Leader Jeff Klein (D-Dist. 34), Assemblyman Marcos Crespo (D-Dist. 85), and Assemblyman Robert Rodriguez (D-Dist. 68).
Annaly Lopez, a 26-year-old single mother whose daughter, Renee, fled a traditional public school to attend Success Academy, the city's largest charter network, was among the protesters. (I profiled Lopez for Reason back in April.)
Nearby, two counter-protesters from New York Communities for Change, a nonprofit affiilated with the United Federation of Teachers, held a banner that said, "Reveal Your Donors. Wall St? Wal-Mart?" Elzora Cleveland, a parent leader with the group, released a prepared statement, calling for an end to the "pretense."
"It's the same super-rich hedge fund donors who are against Mayor de Blasio's progressive agenda and are pushing a right wing agenda in Albany," said Cleveland—a characterization that seemed at odds with the bulging crowd of students and parents. "[They] are all for handing more and more unaccountable dollars to charter schools only because they stand to make a profit."
The rally is the latest in a series of protests by charter supporters. A year ago, advocates led a pro-charter march across the Brooklyn Bridge, followed by a rally in Albany on March 4 that led to the passage of a new state law which made it easier to open and operate new charters in New York.
In a shift in focus, today's event was geared towards bringing more attention to the shortcomings of traditional
public schools. In a recent (soon to be released) interview, Eva Moskowitz—the founder and CEO of Success Academy and the most prominent figure in New York's charter movement—told Reason's Nick Gillespie: "I feel personally that I have not done enough to shine light on [why traditional schools haven't worked] and the stakes for kids." This week, Moskowitz announced that Success Academy's charter network (which includes some of the highest scoring schools in the state) will hold a free professional development workshop for traditional public school principals.
I covered the rally in Albany last March for Reason TV, and looked at roots of the ongoing polical feud between Eva Moskowitz and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D):

Rally? More like the Truancy Parade.
Yeah, and I don't like people using their kids as political pawns - doesn't matter if I support the cause or not. It's grotesque.
Agreed. It's nauseating and thoroughly despicable.
Is it possible that those "pawns" had an interest in what school they attend? That the "pawns" are in fact rational agents that can decide for themselves to attend or not attend a rally?
What's a "hedge fund donor"? Do hedge funds really need donations?
Forget it. She's on a roll.
Alms for an ex-hedger.
Its all part of the wal-mart / charter school axis of evil.
Yes...indeed...
Profit=profit motive=competition=improved schools
Thank fucking Christ for profit.
I'm more curious as to what property of these dollars makes them "unaccountable" ones.
Rich people lefties don't like have them. If the feds taxed them away, it's suddenly clean.
Ya see, the government is "giving" "government money" to peons to spend on a private education. And because it's private the government can't tell the school what and how to teach, so it will be bad, mmmkay? Only the government can force organizations to be accountable. Got it?
In the future, just remember this:
No government...no accountability.
Except all the evidence I've seen is that the movement's "big money" supporters aren't doing this to make a buck. Most of these guys don't have ownership stakes in the charter schools. And no hedge fund manager is giving up leveraged relatvive value trading for running schools any time soon. They really are doing it because they think it sucks that these kids are stuck in shitty schools and think (with good reason) that this is a means to relieve that problem.
Private corporations are completely unaccountable to their customers. Whereas municipal politicians, teacher union capos and public school administrators are completley and immediately accountable to students, teachers and the electorate. Thats why we have such a great school system, and why we have to defend it from even the hint of innovation.
There's no factual basis to the idea that for-profit schools perform better.
" the rally's slogan, "Don't Steal Possible." "
Fuck what say the?
Is this worse than "Think Different"? Or maybe, it's better?
"Lean Forward".
Lean Different?
"think lean"? Michelle Obama

OT: The new Rockefeller myth I was recently told I have bought into (that he became rich by selling oil at the cheapest price):
"You've bought into the myth. Rockefeller eventually became the world's richest man by doing whatever it took to capture control over the market availability of refined oil products. "
Oh? and how did he do that? Perhaps by selling oil at the cheapest price which he was able to do by streamlining the refining and transporting of.....oh fuck. Never mind.
How would oil have displaced whale oil sooner without Rockefeller's streamlined distribution system? Also, where's that quote from? There don't seem to be any citations in it to prove that I've bought into a myth.
Those two sentences are directly contradictory.
Not just contradictory, but academic and stupid.
Is it possible the main source of oil distribution somehow slowed industry advances?
Sure, but this idea is not nor can it ever be thought of as a fact. Even if one could prove with documentation that the Rockefellers actively forestalled some supposed improvement which was picked up more widely later, there is no way to prove a history which doesn't exist.
Such as - could the US have stayed out of WW2 with a different president and stopped from getting into Vietnam?
Might be interesting to contemplate and debate, but the answer you conclude should serve as zero evidence for any other beliefs, as the answer can never be real/proven.
But maybe the author really can see the future and therefore also see theoretical off shoots under different circumstances with perfect clarity... but I doubt it.
I wonder how this person would react if you replace Rockefeller with "the government" and oil with the Internet.
There are several important things to remember about Rockefeller;
Before he got into the business, nobody was making money, other than the railroads that transported the stuff.
At the time gasoline was a nuisance byproduct of refining kerosine.
and
Rockefeller offered his opponents three options; He'd buy them out for a flat price. He'd buy them out for a larger price in shares in his company. Or he'd drive them under. The ones who took shares got rich. The ones who fought mostly felt they bet on themselves and lost; big deal. The ones that took cash hated Rockefeller's guts, because they knew they hadn't had the courage to bet on either themselves OR him.
And Ida Tarbell was the daughter of one of the last group.
"And Ida Tarbell was the daughter of one of the last group."
And a proven liar besides.
more and more unaccountable dollars to charter schools only because they stand to make a profit."
NOT FAIR!
Unaccountable dollars should be the exclusive property of the government schools.
I know, right?
Wait, what? How in hell could that have happened?
It's possible; maybe there would have been someone else who was marginally more clever.
But as it stands, it's an assertion absent evidence; BS in other words.
Maybe. But marginally more clever at what? Marketing fossil fuels? Greens would just start hating that guy instead of Rockefeller. They can't just admit that fossil fuels saved the whales.
"They can't just admit that fossil fuels saved the whales."
They also don't know what city streets smelled like:
"While the nineteenth century American city faced many forms of environmental pollution, none was as all encompassing as that produced by the horse."
http://enviroliteracy.org/article.php/578.html
Like I said: BS
It's also a good argument against scarcity, peak oil etc worries
Long before we ran out of whale oil, we found an alternative
Most greenies don't consider how innovation etc tend to triumph when scarcity raises it's head
Also, Libs tend to believe in what historians refer to as the Pristine Myth, and also the whole noble savage thing
You tell them that America was more heavily forested after the Industrial Revolution than in 1500 when the noble savages were protecting the lands and either they refuse to believe it or their heads explode
First sensible thing you have said.
Louisiana is not much different from the amazon basin...heavily forested in massive trees. We have a bayou not far from where I sit named Bayou Boeuf.
The indians used to burn everything off every year to create plains so that the buffalo would come here. Same thing for most of the misissippi river valley. Talk about a carbon footprint.....
Most greenies don't know this but prairies support more wildlife than forests.
Read about Lewis and Clark. The prairies were the land o plenty. They nearly starved when they got into the forests.
You are exactly right. In a forest all of the ingredients needed to make organic material are bound up in the trunks of the trees.
Any given acre can produce a fixed amount of organic material. You can divide that up into rabbits, grass, and buffalo or you can pack it all into trees.
And as far as forests go, old growth forests are almost completely devoid of life.
Greenies are ignorant fools.
Oh?
Well said.
The worst smog is nothing compared to the cholera and what not, caused by constantly wading in horse shit. Prius owners be warned.
Not only wading in horse shit, but stepping over dead horses. Lots of them. 15000 a year in New York in 1880. And they were frequently left to rot, because bones were easier to deal with than putrefying flesh.
Jobs created or saved. Things would be so much worse now if not for Obumbles stimulus. The heat is hidden away in the deep oceans.
You have to think like a pinko. Ignore the unfalsifiability of it and it all makes sense, or something.
History of the NYC teachers' union, according to the NYC teachers' union.

You get a gold star. First mention of teacher's unions in the comments. Everything the slimy bastards are complaining about is bullshit. Their only objection is that charter schools weaken teacher's unions. None of those fuckers give two shits about the kids.
Their central complaint: "Hey, we bought those politicians! How dare they try to educate kids without us!"
I don't know if anyone else gets this feeling, but I sense that Democrats are starting to lose the school choice thing, and may soon grab it and pretend it was their idea all along (you know, like ending slavery and Jim Crow), while the Party of Stupid stands by and loses the one argument they could win on with minorities.
I don't think that will happen unless they can unionize everyone involved.
Speaking of heroes, not only is Chariots of Fire a wicked pissah movie, but Eric Liddell has got to be one of the most amazing selfless inspiring men who ever lived.
He's so inspiring, I have read several books on him and tons of his writings and the guy just rocked.
It was relatively recently revealed that way back in the day when he was interned in a camp in Japanese occupied China, that Winston Churchill negotiated for his release. Instead of gratefully getting the hell out of there, especially since he was also suffering from cancer which he would later die of, he refused to leave and instead got a pregnant woman to take his slot and get out of there.
Not only was his life full of selfless acts, but he was never trying to pump up his image in the press like so many athletes today would.
He also had somewhat of a screw you Mr government/authority quasi libertarian attitude
When he refused to represent his country and run the 100 m in the Olympics on a Sunday he was faced with members of Parliament calling him a traitor
He was not intimidated in the least and told them to fuck off except in a much nicer way
Instead with not that much time to spare for TRAINING for the 400 and ended up winning it in world record time
Note that the movie is inaccurate in the way they depict him finding out about the Sunday trials after he arrived in France when in fact the whole incident was discovered months earlier
BOOYA Eric Liddell
btw, Harold Abrams was awesome as well
Oh fuck. I hate that song.
When I was growing up, my mother would drag me to this church that would sing, to that tune:
"Give glory to God, church
Give glory to God!
Give glory to God, church
Give glory to God!
Sing praise to His name! Aley! Luya!
Sing praise to His name!
Sing praise to His name! Aley! Luya!
Sing praise to His name."
Ruined it forever.

All of those same things are true about the TEA party protests.
Thomas Sowell on the word racism:
Racism is liberal ketchup- they put it on everything.
Racism, n. a word liberals use when they are losing an argument.
Sowell is so good.
Everything the slimy bastards are complaining about is bullshit. Their only objection is that charter schools weaken teacher's unions. None of those fuckers give two shits about the kids.
I saw some teevee coverage of the JeffCo school curriculum "protests" the other day. Even with sympathetic editing, it was obvious the students were merely puppets, coached and organized by the teachers' union.
Teacher unions represent and advocate for their clients, not students, sometimes quite to the detriment of the latter
Lefties who spout about the stuff that teachers unions have allegedly done for students are as silly as somebody arguing police unions are their to benefit criminal suspects
Lefties who spout about the stuff that teachers unions have allegedly done for students are as silly as somebody arguing police unions are their to benefit criminal suspects the public

True dat. That's not their job. Occasionally such benefits occur, but not by design
Without Rockefeller, the oil business would have still displaced whale oil. In fact, it probably would have happened sooner.
Rockefeller was propping up the whale oil business?
When he first started Standard Oil in Cleveland most of the oil came from Lake Erie Whales.
Sadly extinct, due to global warming. And stuff.
The first picture in the article is the first picture of the event that shows the protestors from the front. All the other pictures I have seen in news stories about this have been from the back. It's almost as if they're acknowledging the fact that if they showed them from the front it would ruin a key Progressive narrative about the "complexion" of this situation.
HAHAHAHA!

It would be rather amusing if the kids and their parents were holding signs blasting DeBlasio as a white devil, wouldn't it?

This comment by Elzora Cleveland, essentially saying that this is all a fraudulent, outsider-funded 'astroturf' movement rather than a true grass-roots (despite 21,000 people being right there in front of her), appears to be a new tactic of the left. In our little San Francisco suburb, developer-friendly members of our city council are claiming a small group of devoted locals trying to prevent "smart growth" stack-and-pack housing development from destroying the semi-rural small-town atmosphere, are also "fake" and "well-funded astroturf." Amazingly enough, one council member even claims these mom-and-pop neighbors are funded by "the Cato Institute and the Reason Foundation."
I have only seen this small group hand out poorly printed xeroxes of protest. The Reason Foundation money should at least get them a new printer!
This is standard lefty projection. George Soros and the unions and hundreds of lefty foundations create astroturf groups all day. Heck, the "campaign finance reform" movement was largely astroturf.
Two groups could advocate for the exact same thing, and the left will judge them by their politics, not by what they are advocating.
The who is more important than the what.
Principals trump principles.
""smart growth" stack-and-pack housing"
Have they learned nothing from the housing project boom of the 60's and 70's?

Of course not. Ask a stupid question...
I've always had a dark fascination with the former Kowloon Walled City.
Cracked did a piece that featured that. A positive example of spontaneous order.
I once had a chat with a Chicago teacher. At one point, he claimed he couldn't be judged by test scores because many of his students came from poor/dysfunctional homes. I said that if teachers have such a minor effect on student outcomes, shouldn't they get paid less?
He was not pleased.
I also like to point out that Chicago public school teachers prefer to send their kids to private schools.

His 'connect the dots' on O-care is worthy of the guy on the grassy knoll!
A month or so ago a retired teacher was complaining about corporations during a cocktail night with my wife's friends. She was blathering on about citizens united and the evil corporations, corps aren't people blah blah just like she was reading from a pamphlet written by Tony. All the standard talking points.
I interrupted her and pointed out that her retirement checks were coming from Exxon, Walmart, P&G, Coca Cola, HALIBURTON(!!!!!)....etc. I asked her if I should call Dick Cheney and tell him to stop sending her blood money.
She went apeshit. She actually had spit flying from her lips and wild, rolling eyes. She completely lost her mind. I just sat there and laughed. That probably made it worse.
That's fucking awesome. It's funny how the progressives never realize that their comfort and reletive wealth comes from the very people they hate. When you point this out to them they lose their shit.
Those corporations are so evil! I mean, they provide goods and services for people, not to mention jobs, and worst of all people voluntarily do business with them! No force or coercion involved! If people chose not to do business with them they'd go under, but people still do! It's terrible!
Well done man. I have a hard time keeping cool enough to deliver those kind of comments with the proper cool acidity to get that reaction. I have done it, but fail more often than I succeed.
Trogs think?
Success Academy's charter network [...] will hold a free professional development workshop for traditional public school principals.
Oooh, burn!
Look at all those race traitors. Glad the old guy was there to set them straight.
When the Chicago Teacher's strike happened, I knew someone who Mother worked for CPS and was a huge supporter of the union. She went on this rant about charter schools and vouchers and I couldn't stomach it and starting debating her. I first asked her, where did she go to school?
In Chicago in order to work for the city you have to be a resident of Chicago. On that note, her Mom didn't send her to one of th neighborhood schools, she instead went to Nazareth Academy in affluent La Grange. After she told me that, I asked how can she deny a poor child in the city a choice and a means to leave their shitty school when that wasn't denied for her. CPS is bad enough where your Mother who teaches in the district wouldn't send you there but yet it's not bad enough to condemn a parent to sending their child to a CPS school.
After her shitty paternalistic excuses I basically told her to go fuck herself.
How do you think we in NH feel? Our fucking governor has gone an a crusade against charters, vouchers, and choice; all the while her husband is the goddamn headmaster of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Maggie Hassan can go fuck herself with a rusty blade.

It's because the progressives could give two shits about lifting the poor out of their condition. Their goal is to control them and keep them dependent on government.
Her one saving grace is: Blocking Massachusetts Sales Tax Collection ? Are you saying that you think the original Dunphy was straight? His claims of bench pressing Morgan Fairchild genuine?
Every time he posted all I could see was this guy:
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0017348/
I never gave it any thought. But this guy ain't the real Dunphy. He hasn't done his "you're butthurt because you were legitimately arrested for a crime" bit, along with the details he remembers from when I told him about the personal experiences that led me to lose all faith in the integrity of police officers.
Yeah, I think everyone here has caught onto that. This one is a phony.
However, it has the same lack of understanding about the standing of POs in most people's minds. Once a person has an interaction with the cops and realizes just how bad cops can be there is no going back. No amount of defense will convince that person that what happened to them didn't happen or that it isn't likely to happen again.
I've been saying it for a week now. It ain't the same poster.
The first person to prove me wrong gets to kick me in the crotch.
This would make for a great Reason webathon. The person who donates the most money gets to ask the Reason webmaster to check the web logs and see if the Dunphys are posting from the same IP.
I wouldn't make the bet if I didn't already know the answer.
Maybe I could do a fundraiser for Reason. I would say that a certain percentage of people here would pay to see me kicked in the crotch.
Familiarity breeds contempt, and this guy just ain't bringing out the contempt.

It's too bad stupid people have so much energy to burn since they don't need to use any for brain function.
Apropos of nothing: Today I heard the second person express to me the opinion that,
"The Cold War was effectively meaningless: Like WWI - should never have happened, was fighting over 'nothing', and it would have made no difference if we'd just pretended the Soviet Union didn't exist and just went about our business"
The consistency with which this view was expressed suggests to me that this is a prevailing narrative in history classes these days, or on college campuses.
IMHO, this version of history is far too oversimplified to be acceptable as 'received wisdom'. Meaning: The Cold War may not have been the Main existential crisis of the century... but its sure as fuck far much more complicated than *that*
... this idea that you can wave it aside as so much 'delusion'* by the West that they were 'under threat'....(*a word actually used)? No, i don't buy that at all.
Particularly from the POV of a certain person: I have 2 friends that i grew up with whose parents escaped from Eastern Bloc nations (Czechoslovakia and Hungary) in the 1960s... and they were certainly not of the view that "it didnt matter" whether anyone opposed the Soviet Union or not.
The idea seems to be that if we'd left the Soviets alone, they'd have come around to change 'sooner or later' anyway... and that if things were bad under communism? it was (like Obama's failed policy) the fault of the West for forcing problems on them.
WTF
It wasn't as if the Soviets were leaving us alone.
I can tell you that Molotov, in his memoirs, made it clear that his job was to expand the borders of the USSR at every opportunity.
And then Kennan may have been a bit whacky, but no one has ever argued (with evidence) against the long telegram.
Two books: "Post War", "Stalin and the Bomb". Neither written by a 'conservative' and both suggest there really wasn't an alternative.
Postwar is stupendous. I love Tony Judt's historical work, despite my vehement disagreements with him on domestic policy.
Thinking the Twentieth Century is also very good, although his section on Hayek is laughable. I don't know how anyone can argue that Hayek was saying the welfare state would inevitably result in Nazism when he explicitly disavows this position in the book itself and reiterates his point in forewords to later editions.
I'm convinced Judt either never read Hayek or skimmed the book while woefully misinterpreting him. Also, the only book by Hayek he mentions in Thinking the Twentieth Century is Road to Serfdom. That's idiotic since it's Hayek's least academic work, and you can't understand his overall arguments without reading Constitution of Liberty and Law, Liberty and Legislation.
For an academic historian, it was inexcusable for him to hold court on Hayek's supposed opinions while seemingly never having read his most important academic works or thinking about the actual arguments of Road to Serfdom.
Still a good book, but once he got into domestic policy he lost his objectivity and reason and went kind of off the rails.
Judt amazed me with Post War. I expected hundreds of pages of lefty twaddle; it seems he was just too honest to do so.
I haven't read T-T-C; maybe soon.
Basically, totalitarian collectivism that comes from the putative right is self-evidently evil, and how dare anybody try to lessen the horror of it. But totalitaritarian collectivism from the putative left is well-intentioned, and how dare you criticize it?
It's a thoroughly evil meta-context.
The logo of the USSR was a hammer and sickle superimposed on the globe. I think that made their intentions clear.

If we'd ignored the Soviet's they would have rolled over the entirety of Scandinavia. Finland can declare that this wouldn't have happened because of their earlier victory in the Winter War, but as much military technology as the Soviet's had by the 1950's, there is no way Scandinavia could have withstood them without our backing.
Hell, without our backing they might have gobbled up all of Europe. What was stopping them from taking the rest of Germany other than the threat of American military force? Once they took Germany, what was stopping them from taking France, Spain, Belgium, Greece...
If we hadn't posed a counterweight to Soviet might, we very well could have ended up with the entirety of Europe and Asia as Communist states. The idea that this would have been 'irrelevant' is an absurdity. We would have had no trade partners because Europe would have been totalitarian.
Well, depending on the time period, British and French nukes would have been a deterrent, but your point stands.
I think there's clearly a solid middle ground between saying that "There was no reason to do anything to oppose the USSR after WWII" and believing that every action taken in the Cold War in the name of opposing communism was necessary and just.

This giant puppet is cool.
No twerking?
Godammit.
Better?
Israel Twerkshop?
Dancers Gal BePole, Maddy Chausha and Miriam Merson?
Kayyyy.
Don't be hatin'!
First, twerking arabs, now twerking jews. It's just a world of twerk.
Yes, much better. Thank you.

Can I get a Coke?
HM understands the road to peace in the Middle East.
It's not out of papier-m?ch?, so it can't be an anti-Bush rally.
I bet Greenpeace made that for the climate rally. it's supposed to symbolize industrial man's enslavement to capitalist exploitation of the oceans.
I thought it might be a rally for under-water homeowners.
Actually, it was made by some French company for the 100th anniversary of the Titanic.
But considering it was sunk by an iceberg, I guess we can claim that was retroactive climate change?
That reminds me. A couple of days ago on NBC news they showed zillions of walruses congregating onshore. They claimed the critters were doing that because of global warming, that the ice they normally congregate on was gone. Total horse shit.
I googled and found this:

Lying fucking liars. Should I point out to R. Bailey once again what a con artist looks like?
I saw that too and thought it was fishy. Seals and the like often gather in large groups to mate.
Yes, ON LAND.
They always have. Every year.
Another bald faced lie by the climate scammers. That is what the balance of the evidence says, that there is a nontrivial chance(100%) that the climate change canard is a deliberate, calculated scam.
I saw Lord Monckton doing a presentation where he showed a scatter plot of temperature and the trendline drawn by the doomers. Of course, the points they picked showed an upward trend. Monckton showed that you could just as easily pick to points that showed a downward trend.
The fact that the IPCC couldn't be bothered to do a simple regression is enough proof to me what complete clowns they are.
I saw that too and thought it was fishy
You should stand downwind of it.
Who will fight the little man on behalf of the government?
And another thing. I've always noticed that those who are against charters and vouchers are people who parents where either able to move to a great neighborhood with great neighborhood schools or had the ability to choose and pay for a good school in the city.
These evening threads just aren't the same without Agile Cyborg. Somebody wake him up.
I suspect the cyborg corrupted his hard drive yesterday.
He probably spilled something on it, yes.
I'm quite sure he lit himself on fire, not unlike Richard Prior.
Somebody wake liquor him up.
Fixed it for you.
Well, the robot Bender is fueled by alcohol...

"Last week when former President Bill Clinton meandered onto the topic of charter schools, he mentioned something about an "original bargain" that charters were, according to the reporter for The Huffington Post, "supposed to do a better job of educating students."
A writer at Salon called the remark "stunning" because it brought to light the fact that the overwhelming majority of charter schools do no better than traditional public schools. Yet, as the Huffington reporter reminded us, charter schools are rarely shuttered for low academic performance.
But what's most remarkable about what Clinton said is how little his statement resembles the truth about how charters have become a reality in so many American communities.
In a real "bargaining process," those who bear the consequences of the deal have some say-so on the terms, the deal-makers have to represent themselves honestly (or the deal is off and the negotiating ends), and there are measures in place to ensure everyone involved is held accountable after the deal has been struck."

Alan Colmes reasonably says that we should avoid fear mongering over Ebola, conservatives willfully misinterpret his comments and call him insane.
I love Twitchy because 75% of their posts are righteous mocking of stupid leftists and the other 25% are hilarious because conservatives themselves are behaving like morons.
Although O'Reilly's comment that if Alan Colmes were living in revolutionary times he would have called Paul Revere a fear monger is actually pretty funny by Bill's low standards.
Colmes isn't wrong. Ebola has a very slim chance of causing problems here on a wide scale.
It infects too easily and kills its host too quickly. Also, it is too easy to avoid infection.
If it were airborne and could be transmitted for two weeks before showing symptoms, then took a while to kill the host we would be in serious deep shit.
Yeah, I am just saying that to put all you suckers off guard...in reality I am preparing for the zombie apocalypse. It is upon us.
Not only that, but Ebola is treatable in the United States. A lot of the real terror of Ebola comes from its effects in Africa, but that experience would not be replicated in America.
The US has about 2000 malaria cases a year because people travel to other countries and pick it up there. Notably, very few of those cases die in America whereas it's an incredibly deadly disease globally. Ebola is similar.
Oh sure, we totally know what we're doing in the US.
WFAA image of individuals pressure washing Mr. Duncan's ebola laced vomit from the pavement/sidewalk. The men are not wearing any biohazard protective clothing or gear and there is a woman walking through the liquid in the parking lot wearing sandles.
That's right, we are no better prepared to treat ebola than Liberia. Better stock up supplies, purchase a biohazard suit, and lock yourself in a basement until the apocalypse is over.
Straw man, Mr. Contrary. I've never said we weren't "better" prepared to deal with Ebola than West Africa. That's a given. My point is that much of the official reassuring blather is nonsense: how there's nothing to worry about, in part because "we are fully prepared to deal with Ebola" due to our fabulous health care system. Bull, and I am being proven correct by unfolding events.
This Dallas hospital had just been trained about Ebola, and yet when a guy from Liberia shows up with symptoms (which admitting can look like the flu etc. in early stages), they send him home with antibiotics. And after they "quarantine" the family, the family doesn't follow orders. And the Ebola vomit? Just spray it off with a hose! And even Westerners who are trained and supposedly know what they are doing, keep going to Ebola regions and somehow catch this "hard to catch" disease. The latest is an NBC News freelancer.
It amazes me that so many libertarians, who usually have no trouble seeing through statist blather and "Top Men" bullshit, immediately roll over and accept what "the authorities" tell them about Ebola. I don't think it's some sort of conspiracy, just a lot of bureaucratic ass-covering and a belief that not panicking the hoi polloi is more important than telling the truth or admitting ignorance.
Thank you for the title.
I don't blindly accept what authorities say, but I also don't take as gospel what media fearmongerers or Internet crackpots have to say. In the grand scheme of things, I'm not too worried about there being a devastating Ebola epidemic in the US. No more, no less.
I also "don't take as gospel what media fearmongerers or Internet crackpots have to say." Please don't suggest that I do. And I also never said that there would be "a devastating Ebola epidemic in the US." I just think there's been an awful lot of bullshit presented about how Ebola is "hard to catch," how "it can't happen here," how our medical system is totally prepared, etc.
Except that the usual media fearmongers are saying what you're saying--that we're prepared, that it's really hard to catch and hard to spread.
And the internet crackpots are pointing out things like while it's only contageous when it's symptomatic, the initial symptoms appear very much like flu.
And now we see that this fact allowed a hospital to let a person with ebola walk out the door.
Which tells us, quite clearly, that we are not prepared. That they do not have things in hand.
Ignoring this fact--and it is a fact--is head-in-the-sandism of the most dangerous kind.
"Yeah, I am just saying that to put all you suckers off guard...in reality I am preparing for the zombie apocalypse. It is upon us."
HA!
Hoarding all the bio-hazard suits, are you?!
