How Kids Find Online Privacy

Three ways kids keep their virtual lives to themselves.

Anthropologist danah boyd (uncapitalization hers) is the author of It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens (Yale University Press). In May, she told reason three ways kids find privacy online.

1. Social steganography. The most common way teens find privacy is not by restricting access to content, but by restricting access to meaning. They encode what they're posting using in-jokes, song lyrics, pronouns, and references that outsiders won't recognize.

2. Super logoff. Even Facebook can be turned into an ephemeral tool if you deactivate your profile whenever you're done using it. All you have to do is pretend to delete your account and Facebook will give you the option to deactivate instead. When you're not activated, no one can search for you or leave messages for you. While this is not a common practice, it's pretty ingenious.

3. Switch, switch, and switch. Parents think that they're "cool" when they know about the latest, greatest app. But once they show up, it's not as much fun. As a result, plenty of teens are on the hunt for something that no one's ever heard of. They jump from service to service, looking for a place where they can be let alone.

      Indeed.

danah boyd apparently swiped her style from bell hooks.

How about spelling it in Wingdings?

I wonder if reason is promoting this woman because of their own bias against capitalizing proper, names.

    3. Careless   11 years ago

Reading just one interview with her a couple of months ago was enough to make me hate her.

Emoji seems like the obvious choice.

    5. F. Stupidity, Jr.   11 years ago

Why didn't she go with all caps like STEVE SMITH?

  2. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

If she told reason in May, why are we just finding out about it now, in October?

    1. Ted S.   11 years ago

You misunderstand. She told it to Elaine May.

  3. Suthenboy   11 years ago

Sounds like the same ol' stuff kids have always done in whatever medium they are using.

    1. Careless   11 years ago

      That's basically her point.

  4. Bardas Phocas   11 years ago

And all week long your River City
    Youth'll be frittern away,
I say your young men'll be frittern!
Frittern away their noontime, suppertime, choretime too!

    Right here in River City.
    Trouble with a capital "T"
And that rhymes with "P" and that stands for PRIVACY!

Children are just fodder for our moral panics.

"Sgt. Ryan Stark shot Mark Salazar, 22, of Blue Mound, Texas, after Salazar fled from the scene of a robbery and stabbed Kye when the dog caught up to him. Stark fired after trying to separate Salazar from the dog, police said." Blue Mound is a small suburb of Fort Worth that should have been annexed a long time ago. They are best known as being a speed trap and for going out of their way to have McElroy not connect to Western Center/Mid Cities/Watauga rd in one smooth shot. And also giving trucks tickets if they somehow travel on their road. Should have been annexed by Fort Worth a long time ago. It is now mostly populated by Obama's "dreamers".

        1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

So the guy that got shot should have been used to idiot cops?

By the way, the "robbery" they allude to was an attempted dine and dash where he drove off and the cops apparently used a pit maneuver on the highway to,put him onto a ditch.

Then the cop sicced his dog on the guy and shot him to death for stabbing the dog.

But don't worry, the guy was recently jailed for (gasp) pot possession and "resisting".

          1. BenDFW   11 years ago

Under castle law the property owners could have rid Blue Mound of this idiot. Why was he in OKC? Who knows. Blue Mound is full of Conquistadores and dreamers. I can't get too pissed at cops if the idiot violate NAP in the first place. It's like the Mike Brown situation, so many better examples to get pissed about. But like usual the thieves get the lamentation.

            1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

So,you're ok if the state executes a man for stealing a bit of food? Because I'm pretty sure the NAP isn't in favor,of executing every person that violates it in a minor manner.

      2. Marshall Gill   11 years ago

Goddammnit sloopy, I could have gone my whole life without reading that shit. I am second to none when it comes to loving my dogs but 1,000 people for a fucking dog funeral?!!!

They can brutally murder my dogs cause they look at someone funny but it is a city-wide tragedy if a dog they unleash on a person is killed?

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK! It is 9:45 am here, time to start drinking whiskey, apparently.

        1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

Sorry, man. This one has my blood boiling. And look at the slideshow. They had a fucking HONOR GUARD at the funeral. They had an open coffin, which is creepily hilarious and presented a flag to the dead dog's handler, which is just creepy.

All because a dude tried to dine and dash, mind you.

          1. grrizzly   11 years ago

This is one of the creepiest things I've ever heard about. The coffin, the US flag...

          2. Marshall Gill   11 years ago

            And look at the slideshow

I did. I am in OKC so I was a little more interested than I might have been otherwise. I don't catch hardly any local news so this is the first I heard of it.

I dearly love dogs. I would have loved this dog that was killed. Labs are wonderful animals. But Science H. Logic, how much fucking money did they spend on this funeral? The twisted nature of being able to shoot a terrier at will but then turning around and giving a parade for a killed police dog is some serious, in your face, FYTW.

The pig is clearly a murderer. Oh, that is redundant, isn't it?

    Lulz. Poor Harry Reid.

    1. Notorious G.K.C.   11 years ago

      Here is a key point:

""They thought there would substantial donations from Harry Reid's friends," Wyatt said. "But there has never been any money donated for that purpose.""

"friends" like the taxpayers, I suppose.

      1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

Don't they realize that Harry Reid's friends are only, going to donate to something they will benefit personally from...like Harry Reid's political machine.

Best name for a county ever.

GRR Martin lives in New Mexico...I wonder if he is near Iron County at all.

The Burger King's expansionist desires have been clear for many years. But with the brazen annexation of an iconic Canadian restaurant chain this week, the time for appeasement is over.

Now, the carno-monarchists are back, and we are living among the first days of the Burger Restoration.

    1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

I really miss Burger Chef. Anybody remember them?

      1. EDG reppin' LBC   11 years ago

Burger Chef became Hardee's didn't it?

        1. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

They were bought by Hardee's,Moho, completely changed the branding.

Plus, Hardee's got rid of the Works Bar,,which is what I miss the most.

        2. sloopyinva (previously -inca)   11 years ago

Looks like I can go to a few places that converted to other names, after the Hardee's sale. The most authentic still in,operation looks to be a place called Schroeder's Drive-In in Danville, IN.

          You up,for a road trip?

      2. SIV   11 years ago

Yes. I ate my first gyro from a Greek place located in an out-of-business Burger Chef.
