Tonight on The Independents: Obama Waffling, Benghazi Paneling, V.A. Stonewalling, Scottish Secession, Millennial Couch-Surfing, Biden Shylocking, Private Space-Taxis, and Anthony Fisher on ISIS Propaganda!
Tonight's episode of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, with re-airs three hours later) begins with President Barack Obama's latest mixed-up messaging regarding the War on ISIS. Party Panelists Guy Benson (Townhall Political Editor) and Rick Ungar (Forbes columnist) will deconstruct that, along with the surprisingly sober Day One of the Benghazi Select Committee hearings. Later in the show, the pair will discuss why Millennials are missing out on important life milestones, and whether Vice President Joe Biden should feel remorse for using the insult "shylock."
With all the noisy hearings today on Capitol Hill, it's easy to lose sight of the latest on the injurious Veterans Administration scandal, but Concerned Veterans for America Issue's Dan Caldwell will keep our eye on the prize of real reform. The co-hosts will take on Scottish independence and space taxis, and beloved Reason TV writer/producer (as well as former Independents stalwart) Anthony L. Fisher will make his maiden voyage on the program, talking about the production values of ISIS's latest propaganda video.

"Judges: School ban on U.S. flag shirts bends to 'will of the mob'"

"On the 2010 holiday (Cinco de Mayo), the court said, several Anglo students wore U.S. flag shirts, and three of them were confronted by other students. Warned by students from both ethnic groups of potential problems, the principal told the youths either to turn their shirts inside out or go home."

"In a dissenting opinion, three conservative judges said the court should have reconsidered and reversed the February ruling as a violation of free speech."

Holy shit, this comment:

Wait did i say China? I meant California.

What, they skipped the contest where you have to drink when someone says, "Consulate" then corrects themselves with "Mission... Facility.... whatever"?
"the production values of ISIS's latest propaganda video."
Speaking of drinking contest... any time they show the typical "terrorist aerobics" shots they seem to think are obligatory whenever 'terrorists' are discussed? EVERYONE MUST DRINK. Especially if its the 'AK-Jumping Jacks'/diving through hoops/ninja-jungle-gym montage.
Hey! I resemble that remark!
Is it wrong of me to want Uday Hussein to be alive just so he could torture Rick Ungar to death?
I think that's probably pretty wrong.
Prediction: Lida.
So will there be a discussion on how people who support politicians who support censorship are libertarian and socially liberal/tolerant?

What difference at this point does it make?
So "moderate rebel" term on one hand this is pretty silly since the very fact of supporting armed rebellion is a radical act but yet on the other hand it isn't that silly since even armed rebellions have their own factional politics *insert your own "splitters!" joke here*.
The question of course depends on what exactly they are being moderate about and the fact that armed rebellions aren't exactly the best situations for the rebels to deal with differing governing philosophies.
"The question of course depends on what exactly they are being moderate"
Easy. The moderates prefer non-rusted knives.
- Radical muslim rebels want to cut your head off
- Moderate Muslim rebels want Radical Muslim rebels to cut your head off

To repeat my post from the other thread, isn't it against the UCMJ for soldiers to appear at political rallies in uniform? Why are they allowed to sit behind Obama for a political rally then?
They have a choice of going to a political rally. When the President uses them as a prop, they don't.
"I was just following orders!"
One wonders what would have happened if they sat there with a skeptical look on their faces or yawned constantly.
I think an 'air stroke' would be most appropriate.
"The Atheist Movement Needs to Disown Richard Dawkins."
Why, I was unaware my Epicureanism was a movement now. I'll just call up the Atheist Pope Scientius XI and get an excommunication! And apparently any criticism of Islamic theology can be discredited by calling it a 'conservative position' and leaving it at that! Quality work there Vice.
*Full disclosure* I read one of Dawkins' books, it was fine. I don't really care what he thinks and would probably be disgusted by his politics, I just enjoy the ridiculous attempts to create an 'atheist community' groupthink.
You Know Which Other Atheists denounced other atheists for holding the wrong views?
Communists?
From the link:
"Outside of Twitter, Dawkins has stated that he "[regards] Islam as one of the great evils of the world." Once again, this is not the provocative, fresh opinion Dawkins obviously thinks it is. It's a boring, conservative opinion espoused by millions of people who want an easy answer to the question of why bad things happen in the world."
Sorry there is no indication Dawkins intended the comment to reflect the cause of world problems; sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Outside of Twitter, I also consider Islam one of the greatest evils...
Not Twitter evil, but still really evil.
Huh, an atheist doesn't like religion, shocking.
Perhaps Dawkin's attacks on Catholicism and Mormonism make him a conservative too.
The author is apparently 'the clown of feminism.' That description lacks all self-awareness.
This is rather like saying that a libertarian who hates the Democrats is a Republican shill. Oh wait...
There is no 'THE Clown', there is a whole car-load of them.
It makes him an evangelical conservative, which is much worse.
Dawkins is right about that. He is very right about a lot of things, and to make up for it he is very wrong about other things.
He is a solid gold asshole, I will give him that.
"He is a solid gold asshole, I will give him that."
He spoke at a Skeptics meeting I went to years ago; yes he is, and I enjoyed it greatly!
Sagan spoke there also and came across as mealy-mouthed, but maybe it was just the comparison.
I always like Sagan so it was a severe disappointment to discover he was a warmista. The lesson is that even the best of us fall prey to magical thinking.
I went to a series of public 'talks' entitled "The Next Million Years", ca 1971. Cannot remember who sponsored it, but it was a huge hit and they had to move it several times to keep up with the crowd size. Sagan was the only speaker I remember.
He started with a chart, sort of a trumpet-shape, explaining that contingencies and inter-relationships made predictions beyond 10 years VERY chancy and getting more so. He should have remembered his own lecture.
(He also did a wonderful explanation of universal expansion; had a balloon with 'stars' printed on it and blew it up! None of them got closer to each other...)
Actual atheists need to disown adherents of the political religions, as they are all just theists in denial. An idol carved out of power structures rather than stone is still a god, and their attraction to messianic leaders is well documented.
And I'll add adherents of 'green' religions.
Anyone who speaks of 'mother earth' or the 'health of the planet' is not speaking in objective terms; those are both religious concepts.
And I'll add adherents of 'green' religions.
Yep, adopting a pagan religion is still a religion.
It should come as a shock to no one that widespread atheism and the rise of the internet created horrible attempts to collectivize atheism into a common ideology that embraces statism. Nietzsche covered this shit last century.
There has always been a segment of atheists who think that if people stop believing then they'll listen to TOP. MEN. and then utopia will result.

I am stealing that.
You just know it's bugging Obama to no end that Muslims are acting like this.
They aren't *real* Muslims.

"They aren't *real* Muslims."
Someone actually said that very thing in those very words to me last night at a dinner party. I shit you not.
Please don't tell me they also said "They've highjacked a great religion".
"They've highjacked a great religion".
And flew it into the World Trade Center!
Not in exactly those words, but yeah. They also said religion of peace.
She stopped speaking to me after I pointed out that:
Most ME savagery is a product of whatever culture is being discussed (ex. Taliban = Pashtoons forcing their cultural norms onto other tribes ).
Religions are products of cultures. Savage peoples don't produce religions of peace.
Ours, no less savage at one time, has undergone much transformation and the enlightenment etc.
Islam has not.
Religion of peace my ass.
Lay a copy of The Sword of The Prophet on her.
Lay a copy of The Sword of The Prophet on her.
Right, there's never been a pro-violence text written and promulgated by Christians.
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword."
Luckily Christianity decided most of what Jesus said was rhetorical.
Otherwise we'd have a lot of blind and one-handed people.
To be fair, Islamic society had a Golden Age of sorts where they produced all sorts of contributions to mathematics, science, and philosophy.
"To be fair, Islamic society had a Golden Age of sorts where they produced all sorts of contributions to mathematics, science, and philosophy."
Yes, and then it regressed. I don't know why and nothing I've read has helped my understanding of the cause.
It did. Some say the Mongols really fucked them up when they sacked Baghdad and set the libraries and universities on fire.
It's said for weeks the Euphrates ran black with the ink of all the books and papers being tossed in by the Mongols.
I don't know why
It ain't hard. They stopped being wealthy. The overland trade routes that they depended on became less profitable once the Euros developed sea routes, and the European traders outmuscled them in India and the Far East.
The Mongols fucked up the Middle East and Russia pretty badly. The Long Divergence gives a pretty good argument about how Islamic property courts killed the likelihood of a middle class developing. Also, the Ottoman takeover of the Middle East and their massive institutional problems didn't help.
Jensen|9.17.14 @ 9:47PM|#
"The Mongols fucked up the Middle East and Russia pretty badly. The Long Divergence gives a pretty good argument about how Islamic property courts killed the likelihood of a middle class developing."
Book titles?
The Long Divergence by Timur Kuran covers most of his arguments in regards to Islamic legal structures. Wikipedia covers his basic points:
"Several mechanisms contributed to the Middle East's economic retardation, Kuran shows. Certain distinctly Middle Eastern institutions, including ones rooted in Islam, unintentionally blocked the transition to the modern economy. The institutions that generated evolutionary bottlenecks include: (1) the Islamic law of inheritance, whose egalitarian character inhibited capital accumulation, (2) the strict individualism of Islamic law and its lack of a concept of corporation, which hindered organizational development and contributed to keeping civil society weak, and (3) the waqf, Islam's distinct form of trust, which locked vast resources into inflexible organizations that tended to become dysfunctional over time. None of these institutions posed an economic disadvantage at the time of their emergence. Nor did they ever cause an absolute decline in economic activity. They turned into handicaps by perpetuating themselves during the long period when western Europe took the lead in developing the institutions of the modern economy."
"The Long Divergence by Timur Kuran"
Danke.

And on the list for the next Amazon order.

Yes, and then it regressed. I don't know why and nothing I've read has helped my understanding of the cause.
Because Islam was a contrived religion initiated to justify and solidify Arabic conquests in the 8th century and not the cause of them.
So The Islamic Arabic Golden Age was killed by the dissemination and widespread adoption of Islam.
It was only golden in comparison to the cultures that surrounded it. And, that was a thousand years ago. Since then they have gone downhill even from that.
As opposed to Suthenboy's absolute scale of goldenness where Suthenboy's own culture just happens to be the only qualifier.
Of course.
Ours, no less savage at one time, has undergone much transformation and the enlightenment etc.
The enlightenment happened after we started getting incredibly wealthy (and took a long time to spread). In the Middle Ages, when the caliphate was wealthy, they were much more civilized and tolerant than Europeans were. Our culture's nice civilized platitudes would be thrown to the four winds too if land, food, and pussy became scarce.
"Our culture's nice civilized platitudes would be thrown to the four winds too if land, food, and pussy became scarce."
Yep, and if the totalitarians get their way that is exactly what will happen. I am specifically thinking of Mr. "under my plan energy prices would necessarily skyrocket" and the idiots who belong to his cult of personality.
As the saying goes, and Venezuela reminds us, "What did socialists use for lighting before candles? Electricity."
In the Middle Ages, when the caliphate was wealthy, they were much more civilized and tolerant than Europeans were.
1. Bullshit
2. The primary cause of the dark ages in Europe were Arabic conquest and piracy, which caused a multi century decline in trade.
3. Long term, populations always declined in areas conquered by Arabs and later muslims.
The primary cause of the dark ages in Europe were Arabic conquest and piracy, which caused a multi century decline in trade.
There are many reasons why this is a ridiculous claim, but perhaps most obvious is the fact that the European Dark Ages began before Mohammed was born, and the part of Europe closest to Arabia (the Byzantine Empire) never experienced a Dark Age.
Did you ask her who the fuck she is to tell people what religion they believe in?
It probably does, and you can't blame the guy. I mean who could have seen it coming? Just like no one could have predicted the failure of socialism. So he made a couple of bad bets, who can blame him for honest mistakes?

Ladies' Man-Edition
- Kennedy: We feel this shirt not only needs a big Ramones logo, but also some Ronny Dio-style 'devil horns' whenever Kennedy wishes to interrupt people. All we can think of are the things 'missing' here. Silver necklace? Witch Hat? Tattoos? I'm no expert on ways to 'do black' (I have been many things, but never a Goth), but we think she's still 2 wheels short of being a proper Biker Bitch.
- Matt: Blue on blue on blue never fails. See? Even the President is doing the same @ the AFB. Its a reliable 'winner'. Of Matt's blue-tie options - he's got a dark navy w/white stripes, the cyan, and this...which I like the best on the light blue shirt; although a darker royal blue (like Obama - or Dan Caldwell - had on) would be pretty snappy as well.
- Kmele: Chambray? con Cardigan. We like this sweater best when its 100% casual and skips the ties. Chill.
- Guy Benson: Clearly suffers from that rare disease where you get younger as you age ("Benjamin Button-Syndrome"?). Soon he will need a high-chair and a pacifier.
- Rick Ungar: Rick's main problem is his lack of 'accessories'. Like, a pitchfork through his neck, or an arm caught in wood chipper.
- Guest-Star, Tony Fisher will receive a bonus review during the After-Show

AMERICA'S FAVORITE GAME SHOW
"Is It Racist?"
Shylock? well, given that merchant of venice has probably been banned from most public-school reading lists already, i'm surprised anyone's even familiar with the term.
in NY however, its still a thing.
Do they teach *any* Shakespeare in public schools?
I saw some HS students do a performance of Titus Andronicus, but it was in a private drama group, not a public school.
Shylocks are a thing, not Shakespeare.
Maybe in Fishing Club.
/points to sign.
Racist.
I hope not. It's useless information.
I suggest you read Dante at least.
Because you are going to the "insulted Shakespeare" level of hell.
"Notorious G.K.C.|9.17.14 @ 9:48PM|#
Do they teach *any* Shakespeare in public schools?"
being serious for a moment -
as recently as a few years ago, most public high schools would have at least 2 plays required during the course of the 4 year HS English curriculum (this is in NY city); i've heard many other more upscale suburban schools upped it to 4 or so...
Interestingly, the way most schools seem to do it is w/ 1 'easy play' freshmen year (i believe the most common are Romeo & Juliet and/or 12th Night; or one play plus the Sonnets)
...and then a 'hard play' (or 2) for senior year (typically from the 'histories' - usually Julius Caesar or Henry V)
Why they do them spaced out like that (with a 2 year 'no Shakespeare' period) i'm unsure. I'd guess its to have flexibility for teachers.
Why do they keep them? Vocabulary. They have a major impact on helping kids learn new words and how to use them.
I've talked to about a half dozen HS english teachers over the years and I always ask about the reading curriculum. Its been an area of interest for me for decades (my mom was a HS english teacher, and I did it myself as a 'volunteer' in college)

Bonus Attire Review
- Tony "The Godfather" Fisher: Looks nothing like I expected. As one of Hit&Run;'s debutante class, we feel a corsage may have been in order. He's clearly taken cues from Kmele's repertoire of 'checks/plaids', as well as Matt's penchant for 'furry brown blazers' and odd-color ties. He also clearly has never read my reviews, which slaughter people for showing up on the show with 'quasi-beards'. That said = the neck hair has at least been trimmed, and the pink/peach tie is actually a ninja-level color-match against the brown jacket, demonstrating color acumen which puts the show's Leading Ginger to shame. On the scale of "Guest Star" slick, he's still below the ever-dap Julian Sanchez, but well above 'just rolled out of bed' Jesse Walker. Fair Showing.
