Darren Wilson, the Ferguson, Mo., police officer whose fatal shooting of Michael Brown touched off more than a week of demonstrations, suffered severe facial injuries, including an orbital (eye socket) fracture, and was nearly beaten unconscious by Brown moments before firing his gun, a source close to the department's top brass told FoxNews.com.
"The Assistant (Police) Chief took him to the hospital, his face all swollen on one side," said the insider. "He was beaten very severely."
That's from a story written by Hollie McKay at FoxNews.com.
The source told FoxNews.com, the 6 foot, 4 inch, 292-pound Brown charged Wilson, prompting the officer to fire at least six shots at him, including the fatal bullet that penetrated the top of Brown's skull, according to an independent autopsy conducted at the request of Brown's family.
Wilson suffered a fractured eye socket in the fracas, and was left dazed by the initial confrontation, the source said. He is now "traumatized, scared for his life and his family, injured and terrified" that a grand jury, which began hearing evidence on Wednesday, will "make some kind of example out of him," the source said.
There's no question that Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's insistence on a "vigorous prosecution" is disturbing, as it implies a legal process directed by political expediency rather than rational deliberation. But beyond the above account's reliance on a single anonymous source, the actions of the Ferguson and St. Louis County cops are a bit tough to square.
If Darren Wilson was badly injured in the incident, why not disclose that sooner (and openly)? And what was up with the release of the surveillance tape apparently showing Brown ripping off a convenience store earlier on the day he was killed? The feds asked the locals not to do that but the Ferguson chief did anyway, even as he said the arresting officer had no knowledge of the robbery. The
source insisted that there was absolutely no spin agenda behind the tape's release and that there were a number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) media requests filed by media outlets seeking it. [Ferguson Police Chief] Tom Jackson is said to have waited on publicly releasing it, and did not want it shown until Brown's grieving mother first had the chance to see it.
"He defied the FOIAs as long as he could," noted the insider. "A powerful, ugly spin has completely ruined public discourse on this whole situation."
Is it possible that Ferguson authorities have managed to make an even bigger mess of things by withholding information that might have quelled some of the rage residents felt in the wake of Brown's shooting?

This is just beyond bizarre. If true, then this was a ready-made Hero Cop narrative. Since when has a Hero Cop story been buried by his own department like this? That level of incompetence is barely imaginable, even by pubsec employees, who are, after all, generally very eager to polish their own public image.
Why is this being leaked anonymously? Why not trot out the officer, resplendent in bandages and braces, and his doctor to talk about this in front of the cameras.
Yeah. I'm picturing a scene where the Sergeant is in the back room with Wilson: "I know it's gonna hurt, and I know you're upset about it, but just take a slug o' dat whiskey, and I'll give you a sharp poke with these brass knucks, and den we can get you outta dis mess."
"I know it's gonna hurt, and I know you're upset about it, but just take a slug o' dat whiskey, and I'll give you a sharp poke with these brass knucks, and den we can get you outta dis mess."
Well, in either event, I bet the dialect of the person who caused those injuries matches that...
If we are going to put our tin foil hats on, try this one out. It's as likely as yours.
Cop boss to Doctor. "Doc can you put him under and then crack up his eye scoket ? We were gonna do it down at the station but we were worried we might hit him a little too hard and kill him"
It makes perfect sense if the enforcer had a comrade (co-conspirator?) work him over a bit in order to cover his ass after the fact. Of course, no police officer would ever do anything like that in order to whitewash his malfeasance, would he? Seeing as how there's no dash cam video or other record of the incident, it's a case of he-said, swine-said and we will probably never know the answer.
O/T but Officer GoFuckYourself has been removed from duty in Ferguson and placed on leave until his actions can be evaluated: http://www.aclu-mo.org/newsvie.....te-officer
There is cell-phone video of the incident immediately after the shooting that shows the officer out there pacing around. Certainly no sign of "trauma" or evidence that he was "severely beaten."
That video isn't of sufficient quality to show injury to the officer. It does however show him pacing, and seeming dazed which would back a claim of self-defense.
Why is this more believable than to suppose that the shooting officer was taken to the hospital, and the higher-ups simply lost track of him because, frankly, they don't give a rats ass about the rank and file?
They may have/had an investigation ongoing that prevented them from being able to legally release that information; they're releasing/leaking it now because of the riots.
And yet that never stops them on other cases in order to get the officer out "in front of the narrative" to make sure public opinion is in their favor.
It's starting to look to me like it probably was a good shoot. But holy fucking shit, everything about the way this has been handled is mind-blowingly stupid.
I honestly wouldn't buy anything coming out of the government and police's mouth at this point. This is a disaster and they are going to do just about anything to try and make it go away. And as RC says above, this entire thing could have been immediately defused had they told the public these details right away. So why didn't they?
Because they're idiots? If what they're saying is true, then the only reasonable explanation is that they thought the best thing to do was clam up pending an investigation. And then when the natives started getting restless, to put the boot down as hard as they could. Because they're idiots.
They already know the citizens are pissed off but they haven't started protesting and looting yet.
Let's NOT release pertinent details and see if the locals go ape shit so we can shoot and tear gas them and let those scum know who's boss around here.
We're so enraged that the officer got an ass whuppin' (as if that's never happened to a police before) that we WANT to fuck with as many "other" citizens as possible.
There is NO way to spin this other than complete numbskullery, arrogance, incompetence, and blood lust on the part of the government.
In fairness, there were multiple eye witnesses. This is the kind of thing where the word of mouth spreads rapidly. In any functional society, the witnesses would say "Mike started whopping on the cop so the cop shot him." At that point, the community would have the intelligence and moral compass not to make Mike a cause celeb.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that this is a small town PD that usually hires the guys who can't get on (or get fired from) larger, more professional forces. I'm sure there are some decent cops on the Ferguson PD but they have apparently been on vacation the last week or so. FPD held onto the video of the convenience store incident until the day they finally decide to release the shooter's name, which seemed stupidly transparent and only pissed off the crowd further. Then, assuming that the latest report of the cop taking a beat down while still in his car is true, they withhold photos of the cop with a bruised, swollen face. The cop's incident report hasn't even been released either so the only version of the events has been from activists. If there is anything they've done right I can't think of what it is.
Exactly. Everyone looking for some sinister ulterior motive from some Presidential level spin doctors forget that these are a bunch of local yokels fumbling in the dark.
If they were big time PR TOP MEN they wouldn't be working for the FPD.
There never was a "window of believability". The victim was black, unarmed, on his way to college, and the cop was white. He could have just killed an entire kindergarten class with his bare hands, and it still would have been "racism".
He was on his way to community college, that thing where anyone with a pulse whose successfully navigated inner city schools where one can graduate without any basic literacy gets accepted.
If you think the people who are protesting, rioting, and looting know the difference, or even care about the difference, I've got a nice bridge for sale.
Even then, I'd read that he hadn't actually enrolled. With classes starting the following Monday you'd think if the story was true he'd have registered for classes.

Something less than 10 days of protests and brutal 3rd-world-style reprisals. I can't believe how anxious some people are to make the police the victims in this whole shitheap. At best, they're incompetent psychopaths who should not be allowed to handle anything more dangerous than a spoon.
Drop the hyperbole. In the third-world, the Michael Brown killing would never have made the news. Any protests or riots related to perceived police brutality would have been shut down with overwhelming force. Sorry, there is no popular uprising going on in Ferguson, just show-boating, ratings grabbing, and cynical opportunism. It's a sad situation which has been put under a microscope for the entertainment of the masses. I, for one, am sick of it. Fox is pre-empting Red Eye three nights in a row, and Reason has become the "Police Are Facists" news site. Can we talk about something else? Something that really impacts my freedom?
Good points. I seem to recall that the media had access to images of Zimmerman's busted open scalp, but held on to them because they didn't fit their desired narrative.
This. And the worst of the vile Journolist scumbags even intentionally doctored the audio of his phone call to make him sound like a racist.
They're desperate right now for any story or narrative that they think will help their beloved Obama and their fellow democrats in the midterms, and this event is like manna from heaven from their standpoint.
Under the circumstances, everything these shitheads say on this matter ought to be viewed with the highest levels of skepticism.
Well, the obvious answer is that it took this long to forge all the evidence needed to clear the cop, but I can also imagine a situation where the DOJ pressured them to throw the guy under the bus and cover up any complications to the narrative, and a disgruntled fellow-cop didn't like that plan much.
The account from the video (by the guy who doesn't know he's being filmed, and who seems to be the only one there who actually saw it happen) basically lines up with the cop's story, and the autopsy does too. I think it's entirely possible it was a good shoot that's been handled more retardedly than anyone would have thought possible.
None of the accounts line up with the cop's story. Three separate witness accounts corroborate each other, and there's no indication or even a likelihood that they all collaborated on their accounts. The fourth account from the supposed "bystander" lacks confidence, and only departs from the other witness accounts on the judgement call of whether Brown moved towards the cop after turning around. It may have certainly appeared that way from his vantage point, but the other three accounts claim Brown was shot dead immediately upon turning around.
"It's starting to look to me like it probably was a good shoot. But holy fucking shit, everything about the way this has been handled is mind-blowingly stupid."
He is now "traumatized, scared for his life and his family, injured and terrified" that a grand jury, which began hearing evidence on Wednesday, will "make some kind of example out of him," the source said.
The thing is--and I am in no way endorsing someone being railroaded for political expediency or to satiate crowd rage--he wouldn't be in this situation if cops hadn't been being completely abusive for years. You know what would have prevented him being in this situation (assuming his story is true)? If he and his fellow cops actually restrained their fellows in blue who are really abusive.
But they didn't, and don't. So they're going to see more of this. It's amazing how they can't put two and two together, but then again we know that being smart stops you from being a cop.
That still doesn't excuse a kangaroo court of someone who actually made a good shot. (yes, I know you're not saying it does, I just wanted to add that in there).
Reality is too complex to fit neatly into any one ideology. I get a little annoyed at the assumption that all cops are racist authoritarian bullies, when I suspect many of them just get cynical because of the demands of the job.
Ever talked with people who work in emergency rooms? To an outsider, they might seem like a bunch of cynical bigots, but they see a lot of crap, and start to notice patterns.
They're not all racist authoritarian bullies, but almost all of them cover for those that are. I don't think it can be plausibly denied that the entire legal system is corrupt and untrustworthy, and that's reflected (and caused) by the cops, prosecutors, judges and politicians who run it.
They don't deal with thugs like Mike Brown all the time, or even a significant minority of the time. There is a reason the cop-fellators have to pump up statistics to try to make their job seem even remotely dangerous.
If you are going to let non-police citizens carry, then cops should be allowed to carry, too. But they should be subject the same laws as any other citizen, and subject to the same standards for prosecution when they break those laws.
It's amazing to me that they just can't understand that something that happens at 8am ends up on the news in Singapore by 5pm. The protesters should really be shouting "the world is watching" or some such.
"he wouldn't be in this situation if cops hadn't been being completely abusive for years. "
Yes, and there is fresh video out today showing one of the cops pointing and assault ( clutches pearls and gasps) rifle at a WHITE protestor last night and is heard on the video saying that "he (cop) will kill the protestor. When asked his name he tells the bystanders " go fuck yourself".
How fucking stupid is that cop in light of all that's going on ?
How fucking stupid is that, in light of all that's going on ?
I guess they could tell the mob of imported looters. " hey, cut this guy some slack ok ? , it's his first day on the job here", and that would make it alright ?
The thing is--and I am in no way endorsing someone being railroaded for political expediency or to satiate crowd rage--he wouldn't be in this situation if cops hadn't been being completely abusive for years.
Police haven't become any more abusive or deadly in decades. They kill 300-400 people a year, mostly suspects in violent felonies, and almost all of them lawfully.
The laws may need changing. But the reason we still have the laws on deadly force on the books is because limiting its use further isn't very popular.
But they didn't, and don't. So they're going to see more of this. It's amazing how they can't put two and two together, but then again we know that being smart stops you from being a cop.
Cops are no more capable of stopping their coworkers from doing something stupid than you or I are. And you're right that being a cop isn't at the top of most people's lists of occupations, so police departments have to take who they can get. Rather than belly-aching about it, come up with suggestions for fixing it.
"Is it possible that Ferguson authorities have managed to make an even bigger mess of things by withholding information that might have quelled some of the rage residents felt in the wake of Brown's shooting?"
Yes, and it's also possible that media outlets referring to Brown as a poor unarmed oppressed black youth on his way to college (and a "shoplifter"), when he was in fact a violent robber, are just as much at fault.
Much as I like to kick the media, and I really, really like to kick the media . . .
The Ferguson PD has missed every single opportunity to calm the waters just by telling the truth. Now, I understand that just telling the truth doesn't come easily to cops, but still. . .
If they had released this information officially and immediately after the shooting, then no other narrative would have gotten any media oxygen. If you refuse to release exculpatory evidence, don't sit around and complain when other narratives get traction.
Indeed. When four or five days pass before anyone has any reason to believe anything besides the original story, I can't put too much blame on the media. Unless I am missing something, the media had no reason to believe anything else until last Friday.
Watch it turn out they couldn't release the exculpatory evidence until the union shop steward approved, and he was unreachable on his Thailand vacation.
The press consists mostly of publishing press releases, especially by police departments. There is zero chance the press wouldn't publish a press release containing exculpatory evidence.
Altering exculpatory evidence? I know there was a lot of spin both excusing & excoriating (yeah, let's use all the words beginning with 'exc'!) Zimmerman from press outlets of all stripes. Zimmerman's injuries were widely covered as soon as the information was released. But, they weren't exculpatory. And, Zimmerman wasn't even a cop.
Another big difference between the Zimmerman/Martin case & this one, is that no one saw Z/M from start to finish. Brown/Ferguson has plenty of eyewitnesses who seem to have seen very different things.
The Ferguson PD has missed every single opportunity to calm the waters just by telling the truth.
I think they first wanted to question all the witnesses they could find, and in order to assess their truthfulness, they don't reveal information.
"So you say you saw the shooting. Tell us more... Finally, did you notice anything unusual about he officer after the shooting? Was the officer injured? ... I see, thank you very much."
If you refuse to release exculpatory evidence, don't sit around and complain when other narratives get traction.
It's not their job to worry about what narratives get traction. Their job is to get witness statements and provide good information to the grand jury and the courts so that the courts can correctly determine whether Wilson is guilty or not.
They probably hid him so they could pound on him a bit to look like Brown did it.
I'm reminded of the scene in The Wire where fat ass hump cop contemplates falling down the stairs at the police station so he could collect and not do any work. You know it happened. Which gives you an idea of the sick fucks in the PD.
It's a simple question of perverse incentives. Just like choosing to live on welfare instead of getting a job. Look at the rates of medical retirements for MA firemen for a particularly egregious example. Medical pensions aren't taxed. They are paid at the rate of the job they were doing at the time. As a result, a significant number of firemen slip in a puddle or injure their backs moving a desk or file cabinet (actual examples) on the day they are acting in a rank higher than there permanent rank.
If Darren Wilson was badly injured in the incident, why not disclose that sooner?
Because they don't have to? I mean, it's medical information, which I believe is supposed to be private.
And what was up with the release of the surveillance tape apparently showing Brown ripping off a convenience store earlier on the day he was killed?
Because they can? And as others have pointed out here, it goes to Brown's state of mind at the time of the stop.
The feds asked the locals not to do that but the Ferguson chief did anyway, even as he said the arresting officer had no knowledge of the robbery.
Shorter Nick Gillespie: Obey.
Michael Brown appears to have been a piece of shit. Strong-arming a convenience store cashier and beating up a cop (and it's well known here that I fucking hate cops) all in one post-high school summer. Seriously, if Brown is doing this shit at eighteen, what the fuck might he have been doing a twenty or twenty-five?
And I would think that the patient in this case would have good reason to want to waive that privacy, assuming he actually fears for his life and that the police aren't just making shit up.
First they failed to mention any injuries, then they said he had a bruised cheek, then it was a dislocated eye socket, now this...gosh I hope next week he isn't completely paralyzed, at this rate he'll be dead by labor day.
Because they don't have to? I mean, it's medical information, which I believe is supposed to be private.
It is supposed to be private, but this was supposedly leaked by an insider not an official source. I don't think the leaker could be prosecuted unless he was the officer's supervisor or an HR person. If he was just a friend gossiping he's clear.
And realistically if they (da po-po) had information that exonerated them you can be damn sure they would have gotten a release ASAP. Unless they are truly incompetent at PR - which is believable, but losing the window of believability is worse.
"Because they don't have to?"... True, they don't have to, but the point is that this info would have changed the entire tone of the situation and may have prevented a lot of rioting. So, why not disclose?
"it's medical information"... there's a difference between detailed info about exact injuries and simply saying that he was badly injured.
With regards to releasing the surveillance tape... I agree completely that it explains some things and should've been released. But doing it at virtually same time as naming the officer is horrible timing.
Overall, yeah, it sounds like this guy deserves very little sympathy. But, why sit on all this info while the city/situation spins out of control?
And absolutely none of this new information, even if true, exonerates the police from any of the other activities they have been engaging in since the initial event like firing tear gas at Al Jazeera, roughing up and arresting members of the press on private property, and pointing semi-automatic rifles at protesters and media.
It seems as if the pigs said, "This situation is really, really bad. If we fuck it up just a little bit more, we'll get to use some of cool toys in riot control."
And what was up with the release of the surveillance tape apparently showing Brown ripping off a convenience store earlier on the day he was killed?
C'mon Nick, did you read the article you linked? They said they had multiple FOIA requests on it and held out as long as they did for the sake of a grieving (and apparently thoroughly incompetent at child rearing) mother.
So, are the Ferguson police culpable for the riots? Had this information been disclosed in a timely fashion, it is unthinkable that the incident would have sparked riots. Let's have some head on pikes for incitement. If not prosecution, then resignations.
Like I said above, if this story is indeed true, the residents of Ferguson would've known the truth via word of mouth. If this turns out to be what really happened, and the people of Ferguson continued to lie, decieve, and riot all in advancement of a lie, then fuck them all and I hope they get an ebola outbreak
The rumor mill has a tendency to modify and exagerrate information to fit people's pre-conceived narratives. Word of mouth is NOT a very reliable source of information.
Didn't you ever play the gossip game when you were a kid?
I could EASILY see witnesses minimizing Brown's assault on the cop and then the subsequent rumors completely dropping that fact from the story. Especially since most witnesses probably only saw the end of the event, not the beginning.
There's video of him after the shooting where he doesn't look like a guy who's been beaten almost to unconsciousness, or a guy who's nursing a badly broken bone. He looks like a cop walking around. Plus his shot grouping was very, very good for somebody who just had one of his eyes taken out.
That's circumstantial in the extreme, yes, but what reasons has the FPD given anyone to trust what they say in the last week?
There's video of him after the shooting where he doesn't look like a guy who's been beaten almost to unconsciousness, or a guy who's nursing a badly broken bone.
Interestingly enough, the girl that recorded that video in the interview along with the link does state that Wilson looked "baffled and bewildered", potentially symptomatic of head injury.
It's a pretty normal reaction for a normal person. For the animals in uniforms, I'm pretty sure if he appears dazed it's because of the raging erection in his pants after he killed a man.
It's pretty obvious his face isn't suffering from a fracture, or that he was nearly beaten unconscious. He's casually pacing around, his hands down by his sides. He's guilty as sin.
Yep. Cops lying like the pigs that they are. Ok, the guy was a thug. Does that give the pigs an excuse to gun him down in cold blood? Not in the country I used to live in. Apparently in the new Soviet States of Murika, just being alive and not being one of 'them' is a justifiable reason. Fuck, you don't even have to be human now, even being a dog is a crime punishable by death.
Yeah, I know. I'm talking about what he does rather than whether he's got a black eye. He's not unsteady on his feet, he's not tending to an injury in any way, he's continuing to patrol the scene without any impairment from the loss of an eye. If he was beaten half to death shortly before that video was taken, he's shaken it off really well.
He just shot and killed someone in a life-or-death situation. A massive adrenaline dump has a way of focusing the mind and body. I've seen people with serious gunshot wounds continue fighting without being aware that they've been shot.
I haven't seen it myself, like you have, but those who are judging should read Lone Suvivor and then say the cop couldn't have been walking around if he was hurt.
I have had broken finger bones playing college football that didn;t hurt at all until I was in the showers.
They're going to put on a show that would shame a professional soccer player.
Indeed, they will on a show. But I think perhaps not the kinda show you're talking about. They'll do the opposite of the soccer player while on the scene. Instead of acting like they've sustained injuries far worse than they have, they'll act macho and pretend to be unfazed. The soccer player schtick happens when they talk to their shop steward about getting on disability.
He looks just really casual and relaxed in that video. It wouldn't show bruising or anything, but I'm having a really hard time believing that is a guy who was just beaten nearly unconscious and has broken facial bones.
Now, he may have taken a punch or two, but at a minimum it sure looks like the cops are exaggerating here. Which may explain the "anonymous leak" format.
People do all sorts of weird shit after getting their bell rung.
I know someone who was really concussed in a car accident who was walking around like nothing happened - and thought she was fine despite not knowing what year it was or remembering her address anymore and planned on walking through the blizzard back home (2 miles away).
The telling thing is the reaction of the other cops. If Wilson was wounded but oblivious to it, they would not be. If he had suffered serious life threatening injuries, odds are they would have been pulling him aside and tending to him.
The other cops don't look very concerned at all, which makes me suspect that the injuries aren't as bad as they are being made out to be.
Of course, I could be wrong; it will be fascinating to read about his 10 years from now.
That could just as well be from having shot someone dead. Even if he didn't care about Michael Brown lying there, he surely is thinking how this is going to affect his career.
I heard that Darren Wilson was technically dead for a full minute until he managed to pull himself back up and draw his weapon on Brown, and even though all 6 shots hit him dead on, it was only the 6th that finally took him down, after he had charged and was within reach of Wilson. A more cowardly man might have seen himself being charged by a 400 pound, muscular, 7 footer who failed to be taken down by multiple bullets at turned and ran. Not Wilson, he stood his ground to defend the small children who he knew were playing on the sidewalk just behind him. That's heroism.
Let's say this is true. And as far the pigs are concerned, it is. Maybe this will get some of the pigs to agree to wear Go-Pros. If they start to believe that wearing a camera will prevent the proles from rioting over a justified shooting and a politically motivated witch hunt prosecution, then maybe there's some value in this fiasco after all.
I don't believe the witness who minutes earlier was an accomplice to a robbery, and I don't believe any anonymous police source. If and when pictures are released, then we can talk.
"There's no question that Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's insistence on a "vigorous prosecution" is disturbing, as it implies a legal process directed by political expediency rather than rational deliberation."
Nobody said a trial would have to be unfair.
There's no reason why it needs to take place in Ferguson either.
This wouldn't be the first time a highly publicized case has been tried in spite of the defendant being demonized in the press and fearful for his safety and his family.
Sounds to me like this guy has a great case for self-defense.
Why does it seem like the rules always change when there's a cop involved?
The point is that a governor putting pressure on the D.A. to try a case before a full investigation is completed is the kind of theatre of the absurd normally reserved for banana republics.
There's nothing wrong with a politician being responsive to people who, for all we know, are rioting because no one has been responsive to them or their complaints against the police.
He's not calling for an unjust trial. He's just calling for a trial.
George H. W. Bush did more or less the same thing in the wake of the L.A. Riots. He went further, actually. Bush the Greater called the Rodney King verdict "unjust". ...and he did that before the cops involved were retried on civil rights violations in federal court.
That kind of thing was necessary in order to restore order--and make the riots stop.
Yeah, if those people are rioting because they think the police are never held accountable for their actions, then wouldn't the governor be remiss in his responsibilities not to do what he could to assure them that any officers in this case will be held accountable if any injustice occurred?
"If there is no justifiable reason for a trial..."
What makes you think there's no justifiable reason for a trial?
An unarmed man was killed!
P.S. I believe district attorneys are democratically elected in Missouri. The idea that their decisions on who to take in front of a grand jury might be someone influenced by public opinion is, therefore, baked into the legal process, isn't it?
Again, I don't think the governor is calling for anything wrong, unconstitutional, illegal, or unjust.
He's just calling for a trial.
Libertarians aren't the only ones who notice that the cops never seem to go on trial.
I believe they use grand juries in Missouri. Why not take it to a grand jury? There's a lot of evidence in this cop's favor. He can prove the state of mind of the victim, with video from where the cigars were taken, and if he's got medical records that show his injuries from the assailant? It seems very likely to me that at least one in twelve jurors will conclude that he was trying to defend himself and he is not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
But this is what trials are for. You're not going to convince people that think the police are unaccountable that they're suddenly accountable now--by refusing to take a cop in front of a jury.
And I think the jury should definitely take this new information into consideration.
The problem is that this case, in my read, was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Just like the LA Riots weren't about Rodney King, really. They were about police brutality, racism, and unaccountability.
The facts of this one case aren't the issue. It's all the other cases people have dealt with in the past.
People have come to think that the police can do whatever they want and they will never be held accountable.
If, as the evidence seems to suggest, the cop is not guilty of a crime, then he should have a breeze defending himself in court.
But if the "protestors" think that not even a week-long riot can get a cop tried (not convicted but tried), then we're really gonna see the social contract break down.
"But if the "protestors" think that not even a week-long riot can get a cop tried (not convicted but tried), then we're really gonna see the social contract break down."
This is the real thing I think, with both Martin and Brown (and Rodney King). It's not at all about "see, they were criminal scumbags after all!." It's about the fact that it is all but impossible to get the police to even *consider looking into* the idea that there may have been misconduct.
There's a definite attitude of "meh, he probably deserved it." I think if these guys were arrested and put on trial, and then found Not Guilty, you wouldn't see the rioting.
The problem with the Rodney King verdict was a couple of things. One, they moved the trial to Simi Valley, where everyone was white. Moving that trial of a white cop beating a black man from Inglewood to Simi Valley would be like moving that trial from downtown Detroit to rural Alabama.
The biggest problem with the Rodney King verdict was that it said to the local community that no matter how much evidence there was, there was no way to hold the police accountable. Everyone had seen the video for themselves on TV. George H.W. Bush himself said it was in injustice. If the system is rigged against you so bad, that not even video evidence of brutality can hold the police accountable, then what legal avenue is left?
In the meantime, Daryl Gates' LAPD was extremely brutal. People stopped for speeding in that community were treated like subhumans. And there was no way to get rid of Gates. The way his position was set up, he couldn't be removed either by the city council or the mayor or the voters. Talk about unaccountable!
I call bullshit! I'm not saying the officer doesn't have some trauma to the face. But, I think it's entirely possible that he hit his face on the car, ether in a struggle with Brown, or while exiting the vehicle. But, to say he was "nearly beaten unconscious" is some serious spin. If he was beaten so severely, why did the assistant police chief drive him to the hospital instead of calling EMS to the scene?
I don't really blame them for reporting it. I'm sure it is information from an anon police official so it's credible. But, for them to just ignore all the problems with the narrative that have been pointed out here is ridiculous.
Hmmm. Isn't it likely that the PD or hospital took pictures of Wilson's face after the incident?
A physician's report and photos may clarify.
While the PD has handled this incredibly badly, these are small town cops with no experience in dealing with media or shootings. They may just be bumbling dummies.
This incident definitely was processed through the lens of our preconceived biases.
But if I were Wilson or Wilson's family with everyone howling for his blood I may very well have left town and kept quiet for a few days too. He took a punch to the face and shot and killed a kid and now the governor of his home state is demanding his prosecution. Whether guilty or innocent of wrong doing, sometimes keeping your mouth shut is the best option.
Yes, the bone that sits below the eye (in the socket, not the cheek) is very thin. It happens when the eye is compressed back into the socket. The pressure is increased and if sufficient, expands out the weakest point (blows out), commonly the floor of the orbit.
Brown's a big dude and a good punch can break the the small bones around the eye socket and its not inconceivable(!) that he could break the socket itself.
*If* this actually happened, then this is one straight-shooting cop. Broken eye, half-blind and in great pain, and he still put 6 rounds on target.
I've vacillated from one side to the other as things went on... I can't say that I've not had thoughts of "he deserved it" sometimes. I also have bouts of wanting to string up the entire Ferguson PD...
I loathe those who profit from this kind of carnage (Sharpton, and so forth), and I think the "vacation looter" angle is pretty sleazy (for all involved.) Ferguson is not looking like unrest so much as it is looking "off its meds"...
There was a shooting in Dallas of a mentally disturbed (cops' description) man who was supposedly "running at them wielding a knife", and the DPD spokesperson proclaimed it a good shoot but as procedure dictated, they were checking on it.
Little did the cops (or the Police Union, I suppose) realize a surveillance camera across the street caught the whole thing. Not only was the cop's story (and his partner's) bullshit, the guy never approached the officers at all. The cops marched up to him, guns drawn, then shot him dead. I couldn't see a knife either... but I'm sure one would've been photoshopped in had the cops gotten the tape first. I don't know, he may have had a knife. Believing the cops after the bogus story of being rushed by this guy makes me think there wasn't one.
Ferguson's shooting reminds me a little of the one in Dallas. I find it suspect that the police waited so long for information to "leak" out. And the wildly differing reports only serve to make the whole matter a mess of Biblical proportions.
The police rarely want to comment too much on cases where they are still investigating because they don't want too much information to get out before they have verified everything (remember Richard Jewell?), don't want to prejudice the jury pool and are controlling assholes. Just think how much grief the commentators here would have given them if the police had let out some information that was wrong.
As far as the cop's injuries, I remember the initial reports saying his face was swollen and he was taken to the hospital.
You mean the "robbery" that wasn't? The "robbery" that, according to the video and the store owner never happened?
And have you seen the video taken seconds after the shooting from the apartment window showing the officer walking around the body several times? Does that look like an officer who's just bean severely injured and beaten nearly unconscious?
This whole thing is a sham. Doesn't matter. By the time the dust settles the lies told by the Police Department will have been repeated a billion times.
And you say this based on--how many times exactly is it that you've had your eye socket broken? Oh, but you've talked to lots of people who've had their eye sockets broken, right?
The number of people who are absolutely certain they know what went down on August 9 continues to amaze me. Because they are all fucking experts.
You mean the "robbery" that wasn't? The "robbery" that, according to the video and the store owner never happened?
Ah, the Grassy Knoll of Ferguson has appeared! I saw some of this conspiracy theory on another site. It goes like this: Brown paid for the cigars, and we don't know why the clerk came around the counter to confront him. Brown was just "rough housing" with him, maybe about some other topic. The store clerk did not report the robbery, it was some anonymous person, which shows it never happened. The police deceptively edited the video to smear Brown.
Not to mention that if the shopkeeper really did deny the events of that video, I'd expect any DOJ not run by Eric Holder to be inquiring with Black Panthers about federal RICO charges.
I think it's pretty clear that the clerk reported the robbery and then after the shooting quickly hushed up and told everyone it never happened because he was afraid of (A) getting his ass kicked, and (B) getting his store smashed up.
I really , really feel sorry for the clerk the most in this whole story.
"The convenience store where the robbery took place was boarded up, but open for business on Friday. A store manager, who declined to give his name, said he fears for his life and pleaded with reporters not to suggest that he called police.
""It's very dangerous," he said. "They kill us if they think we are responsible. People don't understand that.""
That's why he didn't report the robbery. He was scared for his life. As are most merchants in areas like this.
He did report the robbery. That's how the cops knew about it, obviously. He just TOLD EVERYONE that he didn't after Brown got shot. Cause he didn't want anyone to KNOW that he reported it.
Oh, and since District Attorneys in Missouri are elected, rather than appointed, it really shouldn't be controversial to suggest that he might take public opinion into consideration when he decides whether or not to prosecute.
Where were these people when libertarians, over the years, were talking about all the problems with our justice system?
Asset forfeiture, no-knock raids, false confessions, a practically impossible probation system, the drug war as an instrument of racism, baloney sex offender lists, harsh sentencing forcing false confessions in plea bargains, drug court, innocent people on death row...
All of these things were perfectly acceptable before, but when the public wants a cop prosecuted, suddenly our criminal justice system is so fundamentally flawed, there's no way a cop can get a fair trial?
When this story blows over, is anybody gonna remember what they said?
If there is a prosecution, it is extremely unlikely it will be in a county court. Look for a federal prosecution that implicates civil rights violations.
If there is a prosecution, it is extremely unlikely it will be in a county court. Look for a federal prosecution that implicates civil rights violations.
If Obama were a competent president, he would already have emphasized this.
He mentioned a probe, but he should do like what George W. Bush did.
That is what Bush did--he just put a lot of emphasis on it. Obama should be making it abundantly clear that the local machine won't be getting in the way.
Although, since there are public employee unions involved, I don't know if Obama has it in him to cross the picket line, so to speak.
Is Obama even capable of crossing a public employee union? I mean, if he won't do it to quell what amounts to a race riot, then when would he do it?
Even if Wilson was severely beaten, had broken bones in his face and swelling, that does not necessarily mean he shot Brown in self-defense. In a fit of anger over being punched in the face, Wilson could have shot Brown as he was surrendering.
Also let's not forget that given that supporters of Brown distorted his image and obscured facts about him in furtherance of their agenda we are now duty bound to take the word of the police at face value.
The autopsy showed showed no gunpowder on the body (not sure about the clothes) suggesting that he was shot from at least a few feet away. And witnesses , if they can be trusted, say Brown was submitting. We've seen too many stories now when cops get pissed at the insubordination and respond with deadly force.
I think this is the mostly likely scenario. Or, possibly, Wilson was shooting at Brown as he was fleeing and did not react in time to stop shooting when Brown turned around to surrender.
Reaction times can be a bitch, especially if you've just been punched in the face.
The contemporaneous witness report captured on background audio of a cell phone video disagrees with this theory. He specifically reports that Brown turned and rushed at the officer who then responded with gunfire. He also states that he (Brown) "just kept coming".
The fact that this report is made very soon after the shooting lends weight to this version. The fact that it was recounted prior to the subsequent outrage also counts toward the reliability of the witness. The very sketchy details from the family's autopsy report would also seem to align with this witness' account.
If there is a trial, that video will provide enough "reasonable doubt" to gain an acquittal by any competent jury if it is admitted as evidence. In fact, absent any really weighty evidence to the contrary (like a surveillance video that shows the "hands up" version of the story), this should earn a directed verdict from the judge.
Not that any of that has anything to do with what will really happen when real people get involved.
I remember this episode of Happy Days where Fonzie put Richie in charge of watching over his girl while he was away, only to return and find out that Richie had contracted strep from her via a kiss.
Fonzie took Ritchie into the bathroom and told him he could either take it to the face or the gut, and while they were talking some kid pushed open the stall door and smacked Richie right in the face giving him a black eye.
Problem solved, since it looked like discipline had been enforced.
You just don't get the best and brightest in law enforcement. Or the prosecutors office. Or the mayor's office. Well, you just don't attract the best or brightest into government service period.
As an EMT, I can tell you that most people do not take traumatic injury to the head or face as nonchalantly as he seems to be doing. Most people will, at the least, instinctively cover the injured region with their hands. Not let them hang as they patrol.
Also, damage to the orbit is usually associated with changes to vision, which makes me think that he couldn't have gotten those shots off so successfully.
As someone who has spent considerable time in combat, I can tell you that some people can and will take multiple gunshot wounds, and not even know they've been shot until someone points it out to them. Remember, this guy presumably was just in a fight for his life, and he just killed someone. Adrenaline does some funny shit, and no two people will react the same way to an injury.
If I recall correctly, the cop insisted that he was attacked from the beginning. This unnamed source only provides proof.
There were two unsubstantiated narratives. Either the cop shot a kid who was surrendering, or the cop shot him in self defense. The protesters (and looters) chose to believe the former without a shred of evidence.
If both sides lack facts or are late to introduce them, then you reserve judgment until they do. If a looter burned down my business and told me "I wouldn't have done this if the cops showed me this evidence 4 days ago" I'm still pressing charges.
Ideology blinds us all sometimes. If Wilson was a concerned citizen or a neighborhood watch, how would Reason writers react to this new piece of evidence? One that might exonerate an innocent man who acted in self defense?
If both sides lack facts or are late to introduce them
Sorry...still not buying any excuse anyone is coming up with for FPD to be "late to introduce". Their response for two weeks has been FUCK YOU, WE DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU SHIT, AND WE'LL CRUSH YOU WITH OUR AWESOME TOYS FOR EXPECTING OTHERWISE.
If a looter burned down my business and told me "I wouldn't have done this if the cops showed me this evidence 4 days ago" I'm still pressing charges.
FTFY
What scenario do you imagine would justifies a looter burning down your store, or looting it for that matter
Just because the police are alarmingly militarized and frequently brutal does not mean they don't occasionally use justified deadly force.
I can tell who grew up in a majority white, sheltered upper class environment based upon a lot of these comments. I grew up in an area similar to Ferguson. I can only shake my head at the naivete displayed by so many that believe that Michael Brown was headed anywhere but to prison. I think the seeds of hatred planted by cops in your youth over marijuana prohibition has clouded your judgment.
A lot of you don't know how people get down in the 'hood at all. That man's aspirations were hoes, paper chasin', and thug life. He never got into a fight because he was bigger than everyone and bullied his way to getting what he wanted.
If you think stealing some swisher sweets was the first and worst thing he did up to that point I have a bridge to sell you.
So far there isn't a shred of credible evidence that supports anything but the assertion that he attacked the officer suspended the attack, then decided to charge the officer again. Even eyewitness accounts recorded in the background of cell phone footage support the officers story. Brown's accomplice has already impeached himself, not that he needed to, his credibility was zero to begin with.
People in the hood will lie off their ass to stick it to whitey, and even the ones that don't, won't tell the truth out of fear. The peer pressure in this environment is extremely strong
Nah, nah, you have it all wrong. This was the work of the FedGov, in order to prop up the Democrats' election chances this November. Michael Brown, if he really ever existed, is in a safe house in Bucksnort, TN right now.
I lived in "the Hood" for decades. I've been carjacked, I've seen several people shot, I've had my building broken into on multiple occasions, every bike I've ever owned has been stolen.
You're so white you blind me. You don't know Michael Brown just because you saw him be an asshole in a video.
Please. You don't even know my race first off, but thanks for the compliment. Second, if you did live in "the hood", you clearly didn't learn a damn thing from the experience. Maybe you just don't realize that things don't operate that way outside of the hood. Or maybe you are one of those white guys that acted black to fit in (starts with the letter w) and developed stockholm syndrome.
No one that is casually stealing swishers ( or phillies, or some mickeys, or old e, etc) and assaulting store workers is anything but a thug. You are right, I didn't "know" michael brown. But implying that there was much to know makes laugh.
I'm sure he was great conversation and wanted to be an astronaut. He was going to college after all. You guys may fool some hippy white people with that B.s. but you make me laugh. Hood people are intimidating and violent when it suits them, and when when they get caught or like this case - shot ,they play this act like they were just an innocent child with so much potential. "A Lawd my boy neva hurt nobody he wus an angel!" Basically, whatever is convenient.
You probably got messed with so much because your inability to recognize these people and the situations they create for what they are and there is virtually no difference between you now and you then.
I knew that homeboy didn't just want to try my bike out, or that guy walking up to my car just didn't just want to say hello. Sorry to hear that you didn't, and still don't.
Right, because if some place is worse than another, that means the first place is not bad.
With that kind of logic, Caracas is a paradise compared to Monrovia.
It's this kind of relativist idiotic thinking that turns a blind eye to blatantly uncivilized behavior.
The thing I find most amusing about your comment is that it seems to imply that I am ignorant of the world outside of the U.S. and you are clearly more cosmopolitan. Unlike you, I actually don't even live in the U.S. and have lived in three countries all of which well over a year at a time, and I have spent significant amounts of time in others. I am functional in three languages. There isn't a single first world country where I've seen the kind of behavior I saw in the ghetto growing up. It's simply not tolerated.
Try one tenth of the things these people do in Japan and see where that gets you.
You white people always talk about this equality nonsense but I don't see you living with blacks at all. If I'm wrong, why aren't you living in a black neighborhood?
I guess if someone has different life experiences than you it must be racist right? Actually, I think the belief that humans were somehow spared the inequalities that evolution produced in all living things is the truly transcendent thing, it transcends logic and science.
But I guess when you believe in a magic man in the sky and his book says everyone is equal, it must be true.
At what distance though? Initially witnesses said 35 feet. Handguns are difficult to fire with great accuracy at 35 feet. Cops are notoriously bad shots. A cop firing after having the shit kicked outta him and actually fearing for his safety (whether valid or not) would be even worse. Seriously, landing six shots by this guy at anything over ten feet strikes me as implausible, even noting the gargantuan size of the target.
If he charges the officer there are two things the officer has to worry about, the size and skill of the attacker which may be more than the officer can handle. In addition, the accomplice was still there and could join in the street fight. Think about the worst case scenario for a change not what some TV show would have.
In those situations you are trained to point the gun at center mass and keep pulling the trigger as fast as you reasonably can until you are safe. The gun jumps with the muzzle flash and it is hard to keep it on target. This is why he missed so many times.
They are not aiming, not that it would do any good. The sight radius on combat pistols is very small and the sights are fixed sights where you guestimate where to place the sight based on the distance to the target if you are using it for target shooting. That is why they just point and pull.
Only in the movies do guys shoot the heads off of rattlesnakes at 50 yards. In real life holding a centerfire pistol in a 6 inch circle at 25 feet is not easy.
It matters to me, because I am trying to understand what what happened. In the Trayvon case, I couldn't grasp why he attacked Zimmerman, until I found out he participated in some amateur Fight Club street fights. Then it made sense.
In this case, I wonder if Brown had a history of assaults as a youth. If so, it lends credence to the theory that he attacked the cop.
Scene 1:
Shop Interior. Day.
Brown: I'd like to purchase these cigars. (Hands clerk money)
Clerk: Thanks, have a nice day!
Scene 2:
Exterior. Day. Minutes later.
-Brown and Johnson are walking in the street carrying purchased cigars. Officer Wilson pulls up and asks/tells them to get out of the street.
Brown: Okay.
Johnson: a'ight
Wilson pulls away.
Fade to black.
All lived happily ever after.
But yeah, this is the cops fault.
Yeah right. More like Wilson antagonistically demands to know where they are going, where they are coming from, and what they are doing, before demanding identification. After them not having any warrants he searches them. After not finding any contraband, he gives them a stern lecture about how they are pieces of shit that are going to go to prison, and how he's going to be the one who puts them there. Finally he reluctantly lets them go on their way after making sure that they know that they better not ever ask the police for help, because they're pieces of shit and cops don't help pieces of shit. They put them in jail.
Or at least that was my average interaction with city police in my younger days. And I'm white.
It really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that, as time goes on, more details come out to suggest that the story as originally reported probably is probably inaccurate and certainly isn't the last word. That's inevitably what happens in cases like this. When Jean Charles de Menezes was gunned down by the Metropolitan Police for the crime of living in the same building as suspected terrorists, we were initially told that he had leaped over the ticket barrier and run to the subway train, that he had been wearing a heavy coat in the middle of the summer (suggestive that he might be a suicide bomber), and that he had moved menacingly toward the police after they had identified themselves. All that turned out to be bullshit, and what had been reported as a completely justified shoot turned out to be much more like the execution-style slaying that Michael Brown's shooting was first reported to be. It shouldn't be surprising that, conversely, the Michael Brown's shooting turns out to be a lot more complicated than the unprovoked gunning down of a young man for jaywalking.
By the way, if people are looking for an example of unjustified police killings to riot over, why weren't there riots over the killing of de Menezes? Or, for that matter, over the killing of Miriam Carey by police in DC a year ago? Those are both more obviously bad kills than Michael Brown's. Miriam Carey was not only unarmed, she was in an immobilized vehicle that was a lot farther from the police than the 35 feet that Brown supposedly was from Wilson. Why didn't Eric Holder send DOJ investigators to look into that police killing?
If this turns out to be true, it will be the most laughably amazing collossal fuck-up of everyone involved - from Brown, to the cops, to the media, to Reason magazine, to the rioters, right down to the god damn cashier that got robbed in the first place.
LETS GET THIS TIMELINE STRAIGHT SHALL WE?
1. Brown, like a retard, muscles a cashier to take a few boxes of fucking Swisher Sweets, so he can make some damn blunts cause he wants to get high.
2. Cashier reports incident to police, like a normal person who gets robbed is likely to do.
3. Brown proceeds to walk in the middle of the street carrying stolen boxes of Swisher Sweets.
4. Cop stops brown for jaywalking, not realizing that he's a robber. Then suddenly realizes what he just passes, and backs the car up.
5. Brown, still acting like a retard, decides to double down on ripping off a convenience store by assaulting an armed police officer and attempting to take his gun.
6. Upon accidental firing of the gun, Brown apparently decides that maybe doubling down on the felonies wasn't the best move, and then decides the correct thing to do, when you've committed two felonies in a row is to RUN. Then he changes his mind and decides to surrender.
7. But not fast enough for the cop, who proceeds to unload his entire fucking magazine into Brown.
8. Cops arrive and proceed to leave the body lying in the street for several hours, while saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the robbery or the assault for 5 entire days.
9. Biased eye-witnesses proceed to spread dishonest cop-shoots-innocent-black-teenager narrative. Cops don't trouble themselves to interfere.
10. Reason reports cops-shoots-innocent-black-teenager narrative, cause hey, that's part of our narrative too.
11. Cop-shoots-innocent-black-teenager narrative proceeds to incite riots, during which rioters burn down a quik-mart.
12. Cops, still not saying ANYTHING about the robbery or assault, even refusing to release the officer's NAME, take it as an opportunity to haul out their AWESOME NEW TOYS they got from the DOD, cause they've just been ITCHING to play soldier with some rubber bullets, armored humvees, and don't they just look BAD ASS in their body armor?
13. The cops, having fun with their military gear, proceed to tear-gas and terrorize peaceful protestors, who incidentally still have no reason not to believe the cops-shoot-innocent-black-teenager narrative.
14. At the exact moment when everyone is now THOROUGHLY pissed off at the Fergeson police department, they decide to release the officers name, and by the way, here's a video of brown robbing a convenience store, although, actually that has nothing to do with the stop.
15. Thus fucking up the narrative even more. Riots resume. During which, the store that got robbed, by the way gets smashed up an looted. That'll teach you to call the cops, Chinaman!
16. Then after 10 fucking days and continued riots, Fergeson cops are like " Brown actually beat the cop's face to a bloody pulp! HA!!! We got you! Don't you all look stupid now!!! Muahahahahahaha!!!"
Yes it did. The cashier is just denying it now because he doesn't want people to associate him with the shooting. He doesn't want to be blamed for it. For good reason.
5. Brown, still acting like a retard, decides to double down on ripping off a convenience store by assaulting an armed police officer and attempting to take his gun.
One eye witness reports officer is aggressor. Pulls Brown through vehicle window. She took video after the fact.
I'm reading the comments here and...wow. People actually take this anonymous "hero cop is hero" "leak" at face value, they then high-handedly lecture others for doubting our Heroes in Blue. Yeah no I'm not gonna buy this. The video above shows no evidence that Wilson is that badly injured. He certainly managed to shoot rather accurately.
That's the thing to me. NYPD unloads how many clips (or is it magazines) on a suspect and only hit him twice. FPD officer unloads one with a semi decent grouping after one of his eye sockets is fractured?
There's a white on black shooting and the police dept knows it'll blow up PR wise. A day into this their fears are playing out, a fanatical society claims "oh, we're such victims" then riots and loots. News outlets release the address of the policeman. A scandalous attorney general takes interest, he sees possibilities to gin up the vote and maybe avoid an opposition party takeover this Nov, saving his own hide.
Meantime, the police dept knows the best long term stradegy is to deliberate any info to be released beforehand. As the information gets released, the cop haters come unhinged and put forth unbased theories.
This is Roshomon without the nuance. You predisposed to hating cops, watch from this angle. Hate the thug life? Check it out from here. Conservatives over here, Progs over here. We got an angle for EVERYONE. The speed with which people scattered to their respective corners is what I find amazing.
Isn't life one giant clusterfuck? Making sense means attacking personal biases with vigor. I see a lot of thumbsucking Linuses looking for a blanket. "What a coincidence! What I already believed is exactly how this played out!".
No, it wouldnt have quelled jack. All the facts in the world are barriers to race hustlers, agenda driven -media- narrators, and riot hungry crowds.
Imagine you got your face pummeled in while doing your job, and your family worries sick about your health and safety while a complete clusterfuck circus now makes you worry about your family's safety. The delayed actions seem to be of a cop and force trying to pick up its pieces.
Now we have a dead young man and a battered and remorseful cop fearing vigilante justice.
I like to consider myself fairly libertarian, but some of the posts I have seen on this dissappoint me. I thought libertarians were suppose to be non-judgemental but too many of you have already convicted the cop and when offered exculpatory evidence you put on your tin foil hats and begin winding complex stories about the cops manufacturing the evidence. And all of you who say that a grainy video showing the officer pacing around somehow disproves the injuries are morons! I spent 10 yrs as a medic in the army and 17 yrs as a nurse and have seen critically injured people show no physical signs of injuries. I treated one guy who had a 2x4 broken over his head who was only worried about the fact that we had to cut his jeans off to remove them, another guy who completely degloved himself (removed all the skin from his elbows down to his fingers) by falling through a plate glass window, completely sober at the time, who carried on a matter of fact conversation while I placed a torniquet and bandage on it. I treated a kid who walked over a mile with a severely fractured foot to get help, and I have seen multiple MVC victims with similar fractures to the one reported by the cop who had no visible injuries for hours past the accident, and didn't even know they had a broken bone until x-rays were taken. I have also seen victims of trauma, with concussions who paced back and forth and become very focused on something familiar, e.g. the jobs.
You know what I did after the first time I lost a newborn during a code (thankfully the last time too) I started my med pass. You know what I did after my brother died of cancer in my arms, I called the hospice nurse and funeral home and began preparing his body like anyother patient I had lost. That is how some people deal with death and injury, the become super focused which proves nothing! You all should be ashamed of yourself for convicting this guy without hard evidence. Last time I checked it is possible for someone to be beaten to death, especially if you are outweighed by as much as this cop was by this thug! Innocent until proven guilty, not innocent until the mob convicts you!
No they aren't. But they do suggest that maybe people shouldn't be rushing to judgment until they have examined all the evidence. Something that I doubt more than one out of a hundred people following this story will actually do.
you guys are really overthinking this and veering into deep tinfoil hattery.
the simplest explanation is generally the best one.
there seems to be a great fixation around the idea that this is a fake story and/or that the injury was self inflicted or inflicted by a confederate to bolster a cover story.
there is not a shred of evidence to support this. it's just cognitive dissonance and prejudice run amok.
here's a far more plausible scenario:
early on, the police were worried about the officer's safety. they did not release his name or any info.
if they had said "he has a fractured skull from brown punching him and is in the hospital" where do you think the mob would have gone?
can you see that, perhaps, not having them storm a hospital that they were in no position to secure might be a worth goal?
brown was NOT a good guy. this is not to say that the police are either or that they have acted well. neither, for that matter, have many of the protesters.
i'm not sure this story HAS a good guy. there is lots to criticize here and lots of culpability to go around, but let's not go off the rails with these outlandish (and totally unsubstantiated) conspiracy theories.
that's just the sort of own goal that winds up doing harm to the libertarian position.
Here's my question: if you're a cop, what is the standard protocol for dealing with a big guy charging at you? This is not a set-up, I'd really like to hear the answer. What are you supposed to do in that situation?
the hard part with a question like that is that the answer is ALWAYS going to be "it depends".
there is always going to be a judgement call in there somewhere.
do you feel able to handle it with your hands maybe a baton?
would pepper spray work?
in this case, it would seem those would be unlikely.
do you feel you life is threatened?
if the guy just literally cracked your skull punching you, that seems plausible here.
so you have a taser? (i don't know if he did)
do you think it would work? (guys on loads of drugs may not go down)
a citizen who feared for his life and was legitimately under life threatening attack would have been justified in using lethal force to defend his or herself.
you do not lose the right to self defense because you are a police officer.
but might he have had options that were less than lethal?
maybe.
were they appropriate?
maybe.
but these are also split second decisions with a lot of stress and a lot of adrenaline etc.
if (and i say if because i do not have any certainty on facts) a guy the size of brown punched you, broke your skull, then looked to be turning around and coming back at you to whup you again, you have legitimate fear for life and GBH.
the shoot might not have been the best outcome, but it was a justifiable response. i would have shot him too.
if the facts differ, the result of that calculus differs.
Here's the answer: If you're a cop, or ANY ARMED CITIZEN, the last thing you want to do is get in a hand-to-hand fight with someone that's capable of kicking your ass. In a fight, that gun you're carrying isn't "your gun", it's "a gun" and whoever uses it first, wins. That's why it's legal for both the cops, and ANY OTHER ARMED CITIZEN to shoot an unarmed aggressor if they have reasonable fear for their life.

First of all, the CT scan showing the fractured eye socket was phoney. It was a generic sample from the Univ. of Iowa web site. After it was outed the PD admitted there was no fracture and he was not "badly beaten." Second, Mike Brown was running away from the murderer when he was initially fired on, possibly hitting him in the arm. At this point, he turned and put his arms up, surrendering. The murderer fired 4 more times hitting Mike in his right arm and neck. This may have caused Mike to collapse with his head down, when the sixth shot hit him in the head, killing him. Initial witness statements said Mike did not charge the murderer. This rumor that he charged the murderer was mere character assassination of the victim, as well as the rumor that he stole cigars (another part of the video subsequently released showed Mike engaging in a transaction at the register). After all of these lies the Ferguson PD obviously cannot be trusted with the truth.
This is a dangerous game you are playing by pushing this "anonymous leak" as being most likely true. There is no reason why any of these revelations are being withheld or that it should have to be leaked anon. That said, I hope you are right. If not, you are adding gasoline friend. If this is proven to be wrong and simply more spin, then what? It becomes more of reason not too trust the police. Anarchy begins like this..
the ghetto lying journalist who wrote this false story , (wilson ) his face and eye socket was not broken , lying want to be journalist ,stop writing lies , this is just one part of your so called scribed story that is in error and lies your not fit to have the title of journalist , u lie
This just makes no sense at all.
It makes perfect sense if you're a cynical SOB like me and thing the cops are retconning this.
"think"
Presumably if he was admitted to a hospital immediately following the shooting, there will be a paper trail.
They're still working on that part.
It's up for debate whether poorly spoken language is necessarily the same as a dialect.
racist
Ebonics IS a language /sarc.
A few years ago there was actually a movement to decllare it an actual language in and of itself so as to get more money to inner city schools.

If we are going to put our tin foil hats on, try this one out. It's as likely as yours.
Cop boss to Doctor. "Doc can you put him under and then crack up his eye scoket ? We were gonna do it down at the station but we were worried we might hit him a little too hard and kill him"
We can't have all that race baiting be for nothing.
Oh I'm sure that won't stop you.
Just to confirm. You are sure the cop shot this guy for the hell of it. Why would the cop do that?
It makes perfect sense if the enforcer had a comrade (co-conspirator?) work him over a bit in order to cover his ass after the fact. Of course, no police officer would ever do anything like that in order to whitewash his malfeasance, would he? Seeing as how there's no dash cam video or other record of the incident, it's a case of he-said, swine-said and we will probably never know the answer.
O/T but Officer GoFuckYourself has been removed from duty in Ferguson and placed on leave until his actions can be evaluated: http://www.aclu-mo.org/newsvie.....te-officer
Evaluated means reinstated with back pay after the press leave.
There is cell-phone video of the incident immediately after the shooting that shows the officer out there pacing around. Certainly no sign of "trauma" or evidence that he was "severely beaten."
This is just more chit choveling.
Adrenaline
http://entertainment.howstuffw.....ength1.htm
Let's see...
Ferguson is not a functional community.
^This
*Cause celebre.
WTF?
According to Balko, Ferguson's crime rate was about the national average and dropping. NOT a high crime area.
Dont assume incompetence when evil is an option.
I know some say that is backwards, but fuck them.
"Warty|8.20.14 @ 4:49PM|#
Because they're idiots? "
Exactly. Everyone looking for some sinister ulterior motive from some Presidential level spin doctors forget that these are a bunch of local yokels fumbling in the dark.
If they were big time PR TOP MEN they wouldn't be working for the FPD.
And even if they are telling the truth, they've lost the window of believability.
Like it makes any difference?
Even then, I'd read that he hadn't actually enrolled. With classes starting the following Monday you'd think if the story was true he'd have registered for classes.

" they've lost the window of believability"
Given that in todays world, we go from 'actual event' to 'hashtag campaign' and 'presidential opinion-offering' in a matter of days...
...how long, exactly, is the 'window of believability' again?
#WindowClosed #GUILTY
Something less than 10 days of protests and brutal 3rd-world-style reprisals. I can't believe how anxious some people are to make the police the victims in this whole shitheap. At best, they're incompetent psychopaths who should not be allowed to handle anything more dangerous than a spoon.
Third world style reprisals? Examples please.
Shooting teargas at protestors and arresting journalists. Just for starters.
And pepper spray rubbed into the eyelids of OWSters.
That's a pretty good post.
"Brutal 3rd-world-style reprisals"? Seriously? I didn't see anyone being machine-gunned or crushed under tank tracks, did you?
And on that note ... how do you take 10 days off from work to celebrate 1A time?
Maybe they did. I would not trust media reports any more then Police reports.
It is not as if msm does not get this shit wrong and not correct it for months and sometimes never correct it.
There were FOIA requests for the robbery tapes...so the media knew something.
Also that orbital fracture to the eye socket rumor has been linked on Drudge for 2 or 3 days now.
Good Ol' NBC.... making up the news since the Chevy "exploding gas tank" pickup piece....
No way the media could sit on this if it was announced at a press conference, with the officer and his doctor.
Why are they leaking it anonymously?
Well, the obvious answer is that it took this long to forge all the evidence needed to clear the cop, but I can also imagine a situation where the DOJ pressured them to throw the guy under the bus and cover up any complications to the narrative, and a disgruntled fellow-cop didn't like that plan much.
Not putting it past the FPD... but 10 days to forge a swollen face and some paperwork? That is still world class stupid

And there is no guarrantee that is was a mistake when they report it wrong.
Remember the selectively edited audio of the Zimmerman 911 call ?
Remember Dan Rather's actions during the Bush/Gore election ?
Where did you get that info ?
There are supposedly 12 witness accounts that generally line up with the officers story.
The audio that the poster you are responding to definately backs up the officers story.
The only stroy that I have heard that disputes the others is from the guy that was with him who held the stolen cigars when Michael attacked the cops.
"There are supposedly 12 witness accounts that generally line up with the officers story."
There are supposedly several witnesses who claim that the chief of police fucks sheep, but until these witnesses are deposed, it's just hearsay.
Well bless your heart. Aren't you special?
Has anyone's testified under oath yet ?
At this point who's statements aren"t hearsay dumbass ?
"It's starting to look to me like it probably was a good shoot. But holy fucking shit, everything about the way this has been handled is mind-blowingly stupid."
This X 10.
That too.
That still doesn't excuse a kangaroo court of someone who actually made a good shot. (yes, I know you're not saying it does, I just wanted to add that in there).
The thing is [...] he wouldn't be in this situation if cops hadn't been being completely abusive for years.
On the flip side, the cops might not have been abusive for years if they didn't have to deal with thugs like Mike Brown all the time.
We are now positing some non-abusive-cop alternate reality on a libertarian message board? LOLZ
Well, the cops could all quit and we could sort out how a lack of law enforcement would work.
There are always bad apples in every job. The problem is you only hear about the bad stuff.
Not saying police and legal reform isn't necessary, but that is a separate issue from demonizing all cops everywhere.
They don't deal with thugs like Mike Brown all the time, or even a significant minority of the time. There is a reason the cop-fellators have to pump up statistics to try to make their job seem even remotely dangerous.
You know what else would prevent it?
If your typical street cop wasnt allowed to carry.
No firearm, no taser.
Yes, they would abuse their club, but their would be better policing and far less stories.
And far more living dogs.
If you are going to let non-police citizens carry, then cops should be allowed to carry, too. But they should be subject the same laws as any other citizen, and subject to the same standards for prosecution when they break those laws.
^^
This 1000 times.
I grew up in India, where the average cop does not carry a firearm and the average citizen is disarmed.
Police brutality there is terrible, far, far worse than anything we can imagine here.
This cop was shipped in from nearby Saint Ann. His department was very quick to put him on ice.
So ?
Let me pose the question again.
How fucking stupid is that, in light of all that's going on ?
I guess they could tell the mob of imported looters. " hey, cut this guy some slack ok ? , it's his first day on the job here", and that would make it alright ?
Police haven't become any more abusive or deadly in decades. They kill 300-400 people a year, mostly suspects in violent felonies, and almost all of them lawfully.
The laws may need changing. But the reason we still have the laws on deadly force on the books is because limiting its use further isn't very popular.
Speculations abhors a vacuum.
Watch it turn out they couldn't release the exculpatory evidence until the union shop steward approved, and he was unreachable on his Thailand vacation.
If there were a press release containing exculpatory evidence and the press didn't publish it, would it still make a sound?
Yes.
Youtube exists, if nothing else.
The press consists mostly of publishing press releases, especially by police departments. There is zero chance the press wouldn't publish a press release containing exculpatory evidence.
Really? I seem to remember the press actually altering exculpatory evidence in the Zimmerman case.
True. But FOX would have surely ran with it.
It's not their job to worry about what narratives get traction. Their job is to get witness statements and provide good information to the grand jury and the courts so that the courts can correctly determine whether Wilson is guilty or not.
They are going to hide him till all his injuries will have "healed up". Then trot him out to spin this same story.
Wow. The Wire is a documentary ?
Who knew ?
But at least that was cable so we know it's probably true.
Because they don't have to? I mean, it's medical information, which I believe is supposed to be private.
Because they can? And as others have pointed out here, it goes to Brown's state of mind at the time of the stop.
This is just Trayvon II.
Because they don't have to? I mean, it's medical information, which I believe is supposed to be private.
No, the "fact" that he was beaten bloody and taken to the hospital is not medical information.
The details (blown orbit, etc.) that are derived from a medical exam are private, but that privacy can be waived by the patient.
The initial reports were that he sustained injuries, the nature of those injuries were unknown.
Given my past experience with police, I just assumed those injuries were a few broken fingers from beating the shit outta someone.
at this rate he'll be dead by labor day.
Well, that's one way to to avoid prosecution(political or otherwise).
This can't be stressed enough.
And what was up with the release of the surveillance tape apparently showing Brown ripping off a convenience store earlier on the day he was killed?
C'mon Nick, did you read the article you linked? They said they had multiple FOIA requests on it and held out as long as they did for the sake of a grieving (and apparently thoroughly incompetent at child rearing) mother.
http://www.justice.gov/oip/foi.....emption-7a
Exemption (b)(7) investigatory records or information compiled for law enforcement purposes.
They can and do stonewall FOIA requests all the time, they wanted that info out there.
So, are the Ferguson police culpable for the riots? Had this information been disclosed in a timely fashion, it is unthinkable that the incident would have sparked riots. Let's have some head on pikes for incitement. If not prosecution, then resignations.
"are the Ferguson police culpable for the riots? "
Yes. Because they had, but did not install, dash or body cams .
You are messed up, man. Get some help.
Linky?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSy69cbDXsk
Interestingly enough, the girl that recorded that video in the interview along with the link does state that Wilson looked "baffled and bewildered", potentially symptomatic of head injury.
Or he could be baffled and bewildered after realizing how badly he just fucked up.
Agreed. After shooting a man dead, I'm sure that is a pretty normal reaction.
My entire point is that I don't think there's much we can make out of a grainy cell phone video taken after the shooting.
Get punched in the face sometime.
The bruising and swelling take awhile to appear.
Unless skin was broken you would not see anything that early on smart phone quality video.
The orbital bone can also be broken by a punch that's not all that hard if the punch was in the right spot.
But it is still broken.
True this.
I haven't seen it myself, like you have, but those who are judging should read Lone Suvivor and then say the cop couldn't have been walking around if he was hurt.
I have had broken finger bones playing college football that didn;t hurt at all until I was in the showers.
A cop who was assaulted by a perp? They're going to put on a show that would shame a professional soccer player.
The witness said Wilson looked "baffled and bewildered"
That could just as well be from having shot someone dead. Even if he didn't care about Michael Brown lying there, he surely is thinking how this is going to affect his career.
I'm gonna sound like Anon Bot here, but this jsut makes no sense whatsoever. For all the reasons others have noted.
Tha FUCK??
"Just when you thought this couldn't get any MORE fucked up, WE SHOW YOU TO BE MISTAKEN!"
"God damn, Jimmy. Me an Vincent woulda been satisfied with some...freeze-dried Taster's Choice, and he springs this GOURMET shit on us...."
Perhaps they couldn't release the info in a timely manner because it took Wilson three days to rise from the dead.
Well it probably won't be the concern that the proles will riot that will cause that reaction.
It will probably be that they won't have the Black Panthers chanting that they want him dead.
Police sources say policeman was victim-hero. Shocker!
I don't believe the witness who minutes earlier was an accomplice to a robbery, and I don't believe any anonymous police source. If and when pictures are released, then we can talk.
^This.
If and when pictures are released, then we can talk.
They're putting the finishing touches on them as we speak.
The governor is being responsive to the voters.
"That kind of thing was necessary in order to restore order--and make the riots stop."
If rioters want Mr. B killed, and the only way to "make the riots stop" is to do this, then let the riots go on.
(analogy)
And a pretty good one.
I never thought I would see the day that Ken would say what Ken just said.
If there is no justifiable reason for a trial Ken there is no justifiable reason to put Wilson through a trial just to satisfy a political block.
Grand jury would be great! Then see if it goes on from there.
There's no sugarcoating it - this is new information we're hearing.
And I think the jury should definitely take this new information into consideration.
The problem is that this case, in my read, was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Just like the LA Riots weren't about Rodney King, really. They were about police brutality, racism, and unaccountability.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjeEPFbeFK4
And it's not just in this case.
You need to send the message to the community that the unaccountability of the past is over in the future.
No point in hoping this kind of resentment will go away if we just ignore it for a while.
If the police have been unaccountable in the past, that needs to end for good and the locals need to know those days are over.
"I think if these guys were arrested and put on trial, and then found Not Guilty, you wouldn't see the rioting."
The LA riots were =held after a Not Guilty verdict.
There was a lot more to it than that.
Undoubtedly, his fellow cops "forgot" to take pictures of the injuries and, oh no!, too bad he's all healed right now.
Nearly beaten unconscious and was then able to pump 6 rounds into the guy from a distance.
Fox News looks like morons for going with this.
Even if they didn't take pictures, they damn sure took X-rays and maybe CTs or MRIs, seeing as this is supposed to be a serious head injury.
I'm no expert, but how likely is it that a punch could blow your orbit like that?
No idea.
Likely. The orbital is pretty weak, especially if hit from the side.
Yes, the bone that sits below the eye (in the socket, not the cheek) is very thin. It happens when the eye is compressed back into the socket. The pressure is increased and if sufficient, expands out the weakest point (blows out), commonly the floor of the orbit.
http://www.lighthousehockey.co.....key-themes
Brown's a big dude and a good punch can break the the small bones around the eye socket and its not inconceivable(!) that he could break the socket itself.
*If* this actually happened, then this is one straight-shooting cop. Broken eye, half-blind and in great pain, and he still put 6 rounds on target.
"This incident definitely was processed through the lens of our preconceived biases."
See most of the comments here, for sure.
So much this.
I cautioned restraint in reaching a judgement on day one, fully aware that Mr. Brown fell in a demographic that was quick to the punch.
You would've thought I just nominated David Duke for president at that moment.
No one wins in cases like this
The police rarely want to comment too much on cases where they are still investigating because they don't want too much information to get out before they have verified everything (remember Richard Jewell?), don't want to prejudice the jury pool and are controlling assholes. Just think how much grief the commentators here would have given them if the police had let out some information that was wrong.
As far as the cop's injuries, I remember the initial reports saying his face was swollen and he was taken to the hospital.
Bullshit. The police only show comment restraint when they know they fucked up somewhere along the way.
It's pretty hard to get whether or not his face was broken wrong.
So I'm assuming the cellphone video never existed? When will we see that one?
You mean the "robbery" that wasn't? The "robbery" that, according to the video and the store owner never happened?
And have you seen the video taken seconds after the shooting from the apartment window showing the officer walking around the body several times? Does that look like an officer who's just bean severely injured and beaten nearly unconscious?
This whole thing is a sham. Doesn't matter. By the time the dust settles the lies told by the Police Department will have been repeated a billion times.
Among other things, if I had a broken eye socket I'd sure as hell be holding it, not walking around with my arms at my side.
And you say this based on--how many times exactly is it that you've had your eye socket broken? Oh, but you've talked to lots of people who've had their eye sockets broken, right?
The number of people who are absolutely certain they know what went down on August 9 continues to amaze me. Because they are all fucking experts.
Based on expected normal human behavior to pain?
You mean the "robbery" that wasn't? The "robbery" that, according to the video and the store owner never happened?
Ah, the Grassy Knoll of Ferguson has appeared! I saw some of this conspiracy theory on another site. It goes like this: Brown paid for the cigars, and we don't know why the clerk came around the counter to confront him. Brown was just "rough housing" with him, maybe about some other topic. The store clerk did not report the robbery, it was some anonymous person, which shows it never happened. The police deceptively edited the video to smear Brown.
Do I have that about right?
Not to mention that if the shopkeeper really did deny the events of that video, I'd expect any DOJ not run by Eric Holder to be inquiring with Black Panthers about federal RICO charges.
I posited something similar, based on what information was available at the time.
Your scenario doesn't leave Brown with any cigars, which he was supposedly holding when he encountered Wilson.
This.
I mean, if he won't do it to quell what amounts to a race riot, then when would he do it?
...but he should do like what George [H.W.] Bush did.
Fixed!
Even if Wilson was severely beaten, had broken bones in his face and swelling, that does not necessarily mean he shot Brown in self-defense. In a fit of anger over being punched in the face, Wilson could have shot Brown as he was surrendering.
And let's not forget, this is a department that has been caught lying in the past in order to cover-up wrong-doing.
Was that before or after The Shark?
Way before.
You just don't get the best and brightest in law enforcement. Or the prosecutors office. Or the mayor's office. Well, you just don't attract the best or brightest into government service period.
Is it stupid to want a civil service protected, safe job with the best benefits and retirement on planet Earth?
I sometimes wish I had been so stupid.
The best and brightest know better.
Wilson was standing around at the shooting scene, not licking severe wounds.
Looking "bewildered" per one non-sympathetic eyewitness.
In-fucking-excusable.
They released the video of the kid committing a burglary, which was promptly denounced as "cops releasing information selectively".
Remember that the police initially hid the officer's identity. His name was revealed recently, and whoever is representing him is now taking actions.
FTFY
If a looter burned down my business and told me "I wouldn't have done this if the cops showed me this evidence 4 days ago" I'm still pressing charges.
FTFY
What scenario do you imagine would justifies a looter burning down your store, or looting it for that matter
If I pay him under the table to do so, in order for me to collect insurance money.
Sounds like some serious business to me dude.
http://www.Anon-Surf.tk
ThePinnacle|8.20.14 @ 6:21PM|#
Yes! Well put, sir/madame. Thank you.
Please.
Compared to Caracas, there ARE no "hoods" in the US. Pikers.
And just because Ferguson is black doesn't mean it's a high crime area. Their crime rate is about the national average and going down.
Wow, that is some truly transcendent levels of racism right there.
I guess if someone has different life experiences than you it must be racist right? Actually, I think the belief that humans were somehow spared the inequalities that evolution produced in all living things is the truly transcendent thing, it transcends logic and science.
But I guess when you believe in a magic man in the sky and his book says everyone is equal, it must be true.
every bike I've ever owned has been stolen.
Me too! And after the second or third time calling the cops and being told that they don't give a shit, I stopped.
Even if the kid really punched the cop in the face, would any of us be justified in shooting someone from that far away?
Or would we be immediately charged with murder, being that at that distance, an unarmed person is no longer an immediate threat?
Huh.. I just have to say, my first feeling of intuition about this is.... I don't believe a fucking word of it, not one fucking word.
Lynch mobs gonna lynch.
I noted that the media is saying that Brown "had no adult record," but did he have a juvenile record? If so, will we ever know?
It doesn't matter. Not sure who is worse, the media or the cops. They are both enemies of the people, that is quite obvious these days.
Wilson pulls away.
I think you missed the point of the comment, which was illustrating a situation where no one acted like an asshole and everything worked out well.
Wait, no, I did. Never mind.
Could they have made a race war out of it?
Yeah, if we could verify this with a news source other than Faux News, that'd be great.
You mean maybe Dan Rather? Or NBC? Or Jason Blair/Walter Duranty's NYTimes? Or NPR [state-sponsored radio]?
Give me a break.
You should have your own TV show... that was succinct, thorough, and bloody entertaining. *applause*
We may have a threadwinner.
+1000
That sounds about right. Or at least it fits all the evidence.
2. Cashier reports incident to police, like a normal person who gets robbed is likely to do.
Did not happen.
Yes it did. The cashier is just denying it now because he doesn't want people to associate him with the shooting. He doesn't want to be blamed for it. For good reason.
Yep. Intimidation works.
Brown proceeds to walk in the middle of the street carrying stolen boxes of Swisher Sweets.
No theft reported.
Bullshit
5. Brown, still acting like a retard, decides to double down on ripping off a convenience store by assaulting an armed police officer and attempting to take his gun.
One eye witness reports officer is aggressor. Pulls Brown through vehicle window. She took video after the fact.
Honest question. How do you/Why would you pull a 6'3, 290lb guy through your window?
One eye witness reports officer is aggressor. Pulls Brown through vehicle window. She took video after the fact.
Really? How did a short-ass cop pull a 18-year-old the size of an NFL lineman through the window?
Six words on the policeman's alleged beat up face :
crazy bad guy in Dirty Harry 1
- it was self inflicted to look like dirty harry beat up the bad guy
I'm reading the comments here and...wow. People actually take this anonymous "hero cop is hero" "leak" at face value, they then high-handedly lecture others for doubting our Heroes in Blue. Yeah no I'm not gonna buy this. The video above shows no evidence that Wilson is that badly injured. He certainly managed to shoot rather accurately.
That's the thing to me. NYPD unloads how many clips (or is it magazines) on a suspect and only hit him twice. FPD officer unloads one with a semi decent grouping after one of his eye sockets is fractured?
I call shenanigans or mutant powers.
HTML tags, how do they work?
Or really close range...
Derp da derp da tiddly terp.
This is Roshomon without the nuance. You predisposed to hating cops, watch from this angle. Hate the thug life? Check it out from here. Conservatives over here, Progs over here. We got an angle for EVERYONE. The speed with which people scattered to their respective corners is what I find amazing.
It's a giant clusterfuck from every angle.
Isn't life one giant clusterfuck? Making sense means attacking personal biases with vigor. I see a lot of thumbsucking Linuses looking for a blanket. "What a coincidence! What I already believed is exactly how this played out!".
BTW, the Reason commentariat seems to have a larger diversity of opinions than any other site I've been to. That may be my own bias, though. Fuck!
Yes, there has been too much jumping to conclusions around here.
Well written.
And to add the saying "innocent until proven guilty" is actually wrong.
The original was "innocent UNLESS proven guilty". To say "until proven guilty" implies it's just a matter of time, not guilt.
Anecdotal reports - "he was severely injured" are not evidence.
No they aren't. But they do suggest that maybe people shouldn't be rushing to judgment until they have examined all the evidence. Something that I doubt more than one out of a hundred people following this story will actually do.
The narrative has finished crumbling, Reason. Time to bail on this.
you guys are really overthinking this and veering into deep tinfoil hattery.
the simplest explanation is generally the best one.
there seems to be a great fixation around the idea that this is a fake story and/or that the injury was self inflicted or inflicted by a confederate to bolster a cover story.
there is not a shred of evidence to support this. it's just cognitive dissonance and prejudice run amok.
here's a far more plausible scenario:
early on, the police were worried about the officer's safety. they did not release his name or any info.
if they had said "he has a fractured skull from brown punching him and is in the hospital" where do you think the mob would have gone?
can you see that, perhaps, not having them storm a hospital that they were in no position to secure might be a worth goal?
brown was NOT a good guy. this is not to say that the police are either or that they have acted well. neither, for that matter, have many of the protesters.
i'm not sure this story HAS a good guy. there is lots to criticize here and lots of culpability to go around, but let's not go off the rails with these outlandish (and totally unsubstantiated) conspiracy theories.
that's just the sort of own goal that winds up doing harm to the libertarian position.
And a follow-up question: what is the police procedure for a suspect raising his arms to surrender? Is it firing 5 or 6 times to kill that person?
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail
