Huey P. Newton Gun Club Pushes #BlackOpenCarry to Protest Police Violence

In Texas, blacks are protesting police violence in a particularly Southwestern way: By invoking their right to open carry. On Wednesday, more than 30 members of the newly-formed Huey P. Newton Gun Club gathered to march through South Dallas with rifles, shotguns, and AR-15s. The group eventually entered a restaurant with their weapons while Dallas police officers were inside eating lunch.

"The recent murders of unarmed black, brown, and whites across the United States of America has eradicated trust in the police," the gun club's website states.

Individuals across this nation have been stripped of due process, subjected to state-sponsored police terrorism, and continue to suffer the fate of being terminated extra-judicially.

In Dallas the police have murdered over 70 unarmed individuals, most of the black and brown men, over the last ten years. Excluding a recent incident where police testimony was contradicted by surveillance footage, there have been no indictments since 1973.

The people, who are gunned down and murdered by violent and militarized police forces, have formed the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, for the specifc purpose of self defense and community policing.

Note that the only Dallas cop indicted for killing an unarmed civilian was a case with surveillance footage available. More and more, we're seeing why dashcam and body cameras for cops are so crucial. Just yesterday, a 25-year-old man was gunned down by police in St. Louis. The cops said Kajieme Powell, who had just stolen two energy drinks from a convenience store and was now pacing out front talking to himself, was coming at them with a knife raised when they shot in self-defense. A cell-phone video released today shows otherwise. It shows two St. Louis officers barely stopping their car before they open fire on a man with his arms seemingly at his side.

"We demand the immediate end to police brutality, harassment, and murder of the people," says the Huey P. Newton Gun Club website. "We assert the right of the people, particularly those of color, to bear arms and protect themselves where local, state, and the federal government have historically failed to do so."

The hashtag #BlackOpenCarry has been lighting up Twitter tonight. Some photos, tweets, and video:

I'm betting the folks over at Salon are suffering a bit of cognitive dissonance about this...

It will be pretty hilarious to see the left and the racist elements of the right have their heads explode over this.

That saying dates from an 1810 poem by William Blake, the first line of which is, "Dissembler, Deceiver, you're trousers are alight...")

          Now, that's funny.

  3. Ken Shultz   11 years ago

    Good for them!

    That's fantastic!

Here's a picture of the Black Panthers at the Washington state legislature in 1969.

    http://depts.washington.edu/ci...../wsa/black panthers 2-28-69.jpg

They were demonstrating in protest of a bill that would prohibit open carry.

The Black Panthers did the same thing in California, when they marched onto the floor of the Sacramento legislature. I don't have a photo of that.

A lot of us are familiar with how zoning laws evolved as a means to keep black people segregated from the rest of us--it shouldn't be surprising to see that new infringements on our Second Amendment rights happened to coincide with black people publicly asserting their Second Amendment rights, too.

    2. Mike H. 2   11 years ago

Speaking of Huey Newton: The "Liberal" Gov. of California, Ronald Reagan, signed the Mulford Act in 1967, which greatly limited open carry in California. This was in Response to the above said Black Panthers carrying guns around the California State Capitol. Funny that the NRA doesn't talk about that one.

So, will Texas just learn to live with this? Pass a Mulford Act there? Disarm blacks only?

      1. ULOST   11 years ago

"This was in Response to the above said Black Panthers carrying guns around the California State Capitol."

I had read many years before that it had to do with the pussy pigs being afraid to pull over Hells Angels with guns.

  4. Hugh Akston   11 years ago

I still kinda wonder how much support for stricter gun control is intentionally about disarming blacks in the face of cops and how much is just that as an unintended consequence.

    1. Jose Chung   11 years ago

Historically, gun control in the US has been primarily for the purpose of disarming blacks. I suggest anyone interested in this topic watch Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire.

      1. Pro Libertate   11 years ago

Well, the media doesn't much report all of the deaths that involve the victim being armed and the shooter being something other than a white male.

      2. Malvolio   11 years ago

Bill Daggett: You just shot an unarmed man!

Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself.

"The recent murders of unarmed black, brown, and whites across the United States of America has eradicated trust in the police," the gun club's website states.

Boom. Immediately love these guys. The worst part of police and government malfeasance is that people Balkanize and attack the cops only when they brutalize someone who is a member of their tribe.

Conservatives don't give a shit when cops fuck up a left-wing constituency and vice versa. Anyone opposed to police malfeasance in all instances is a hero.

    1. Sevo   11 years ago

And they are to be commended for avoiding mention that black and brown kids get the slammer for a joint, while white kids get 'rehab'.

11 Things White People Should Stop Saying to Black People Immediately.

You melanin-deprived freaks need to cut it out post-haste.

    1. Vulgar Madman   11 years ago

      Stop resisting?

      1. cavalier973   11 years ago

Something about denying White Privelege is one of the things.

    2. cavalier973   11 years ago

      8. "I don't understand why you people..."
The phrase "you people" is coded language, a euphemism for the n-word, black people, outsiders or "the other." By being an outsider to whiteness and white supremacy, "you people" suggests that blacks (and other people of color) do not belong in the same rooms, venues or halls of power as white people.

      1. Vulgar Madman   11 years ago

        So derp then.

      2. Sevo   11 years ago

"You people" is most often a presumption that a group of people, defined by some irrelevancy, share view points or opinions.
As someone who is melanin-deprived, I despise the phrase. I am not part of 'you people'.

      3. cavalier973   11 years ago

        8a. "I don't understand you people..."
Snide remarks about one's grammar and speech patterns is a double whammy, since it is due to institutional racism that schools in minority neighborhoods are underfunded. Also, making fun of someone's culture is not cool.

      4. Zombie Jimbo   11 years ago

WHen I say that I make sure it's "Youse people"

      5. Joshua   11 years ago

Coded language my ass. Sounds like simple language to me.

        1. wwhorton   11 years ago

Is it still racist if you say "y'all" instead?

    3. cavalier973   11 years ago

      9. "When I see you, I don't see race."
Color-blind racism is still racism. Without facing history and the present realities, it's impossible to understand how racism affects the everyday life of peoples of all races and ethnicities.

      1. cavalier973   11 years ago

9a. "When I see you at night, I only see eyeballs and teeth."
See, this is just beyond the pale. Just because you are white racists doesn't mean that you can make racist jokes out loud like that.

    4. cavalier973   11 years ago

The killings of Michael Brown, Renisha McBride, Jordan Davis, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and many other nameless, faceless black young people ? all at the hands of police and whites ? come at a time when black women like Marissa Alexander are simultaneously being denied the "stand your ground" defense and instead threatened with decades in jail for firing a warning shot at an allegedly abusive spouse.

      1. DesigNate   11 years ago

One of those things is not like the others.

        1. cavalier973   11 years ago

It sounds like you need to go to the doctor and get a melanin infusion, because your White Privelege is leaking all over my screen.

I could see that, depending on what he is selecting. Chicken, black beans, brown rice, guacamole, salsa - low fat, high protein and fiber all digest more slowly than high GI carbs so you are less apt to feel hungry later.

Of course, in the end you have to run a calorie deficit to lose weight. You could theoretically lose weight if you eat MickieDee's everyday as long as you are eating less than what your body needs.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I think that if Black people want to parade around with upholstered guns that's their business and not mine. Let them suffer the consequences along with White gun owners. You are more likely to die of gun violence with a gun in your house than not.

Is the point of the article to recommend that Black people in Ferguson start brandishing their automatic rifles while the National Guard looks on? Let me know how that goes, my beautiful Black NRA Soul Brothers.

Just curious, how did Huey Newton die again? Let me know how that story ends.

As incoherent, progressive mental-diarrhea goes, that comment achieves new lows in the art-form.

Not a single sentence stands on its own as a logical or even sensical-claim... nor do any sentences leading into or following provide any support or context to aid in the transmission of some coherent idea.

The walls of public toilets frequently demonstrate greater logic, flow, and purpose.

Add in the sneering, patronizing racism, and we have the most bare and honest depiction of modern progressivism.

      Bravo.

I was making a libertarian argument about ownership of a gun. if people want to bring guns to a violent protest and brandish them in front of the police I don't think that's going to end well. But if the Huey Newton Gun Club wants to get into a fire fight with the National Guard that's up to them. I know there's a lot of right-wingers-- Timothy mcveigh comes immediately to mind-- that think it's going to come to that anyway.

I think people should have the ability to do pretty much what they please, but-- here's where I may differ from pop-anarchocapitalist dictums-- I think they should suffer the consequences of their actions and shouldn't be surprised or bitch about it when a cop pops them in the mouth in the midst of a melee.

Dammit, that is not contrary to the libertarian idea. That IS part of the deal. Why in holy hell do you not comprehend that???? WTF?

    9. HolgerDanske   11 years ago

"You are more likely to die of gun violence with a gun in your house than not."

Well of course, it's difficult to get shot if there isn't a gun around. Just like you're less likely to choke to death on a ham sandwich if you don't eat pork. Then there's the whole mis-characterization of suicides and accidents as "gun violence" in some statistics.

Then you're left with cases where someone snaps and decides to kill her entire family, etc.

But what about comparing those actual violence numbers to the number of people who successfully defend themselves from a criminal with the firearm they keep in their home or carry on their person?

People die from injuries sustained because of air bags or seat belts quite often, yet we don't question their usefulness.

    10. ULOST   11 years ago

Another moronic statistic. How is that states with less gun control are safer. Duh!

How many people deter violence by merely displaying a gun? Duh.

  15. brokencycle   11 years ago

What are AR-15s if not rifles? I know they're scary because they are black and have synthetic stocks, but besides that.

Mine is a carbine. One of them, anyway.

In Texas, blacks are protesting police violence in a particularly Southwestern

Do not call Texas the west.

Bad enough New Mexico made the cut.

    1. Paul.   11 years ago

She didn't, she called it the southwest.

No rape occurred, so Seattle Schools are looking into what they can do to fix it.

Somebody needs to bitch-slap the girl's parents.

Folks, if your little honey climbed out one window, and into another, to get into some jerk's bed, she wasn't raped. Dumb as a post, maybe. Taken advantage of, possibly. But not raped. She worked too hard for it.

  18. Rock Action   11 years ago

Uh, I'm not for the cops in this case, but this description is wildly inaccurate.

"The cops said Kajieme Powell, who had just stolen two energy drinks from a convenience store and was now pacing out front talking to himself, was coming at them with a knife raised when they shot in self-defense. A cell-phone video released today shows otherwise."

No, he's walking directly toward the cops with his hands in his pockets telling them to "shoot me. Shoot me now, motherfucker."

What part of the video did you miss?

    1. Rock Action   11 years ago

I mean, there's no need to fuck up the narrative when they're cuffing an already dead man. What's the purpose of the blog post?

Whew, this action sure surprises me, a liberal supporting minority taking on conservative solutions! Goes to show my prejudice. As a proud NRA member, gotta support these folks. Carrying (a gun) legally generally entails some training; Positive 1. While carrying, one can't help but to imagine scenarios where you might draw/fire your firearm. There's a host of legal and ethical considerations to be studied; Positive 2. Legal peaceful armed citizens likely would gain some understanding of what law enforcement deals with, ie; do I tez 'em or shoot 'em in the leg, or stop their aggression in the most reliable manner? Pos3. The Dallas Police would be forced to rethink their shoot 1st mentality; Pos4

My attitude of support is contingent on a statistical reduction of hostilities by all parties, which I believe will take place. A peaceful resolution beats an ugly media-political-liberal ginned up race war everytime.

  21. Sosalty   11 years ago

Now, quit alarming folks waving your guns around and go get training for conceal carry.

    1. marshaul   11 years ago

Why concealed carry? Are you ashamed of your rights, or are you under the ridiculous internet-ninja tacticool fantasy that there is some "tactical advantage" to concealed carry?

That "element of surprise" is useful for offense, but not particularly for defense. Furthermore, open carry has a proven deterrent effect, which is the WHOLE POINT of these citizen defense patrols in the first place.

In short, CC is the choice of cowards, statist, criminals, and tacticool-wannabes.

  22. HTuttle   11 years ago

Fine. Obey the laws. No big deal.

  23. dpbisme   11 years ago

I would have no problem with this except the racial component. The Black Panther type uniforms are a bit much. The number one killer of Black Men is other Black Men... not the police.

I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go? to tech tab for work detail

Black people walking around urban areas carrying semi-auto rifles is just as much of a dumb idea as white people doing the same thing. If they want to open-carry a weapon, it should be a .45 M1911 pistol, which has much more stopping power at close range than the .223 calibre bullet used in the AR-15, and doesn't fly nearly as far - it's good out to about 60 yards at maximum, whereas an AR-15 bullet can travel 500 yards. That, and a can of pepper-spray for close-in threats, should be what they carry if they're serious and not being dumb - like those stupid white guys.

    1. crufus   11 years ago

I believe that open carry of pistols is against the law in Texas, and that's what started the whole movement of open carry of rifles and shotguns.

    2. Sosalty   11 years ago

Whoa, a .223 has more than 2Xs the power of the .45ACP. Also, a .45 can travel in excess of 500 yds. A dog and a determined drugged perp can dodge or disregard pepper spray. I wish there wasn't such a lack of understanding of simple defense. Law enforcement and military has been at this for a long time while being under the scrutiny of the public. There's a reason they are trained to do as they do.

  27. streamfortyseven   11 years ago

And as for Mr Powell, officers trained in basic aikido techniques could have had him down in a flash - and disarmed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8w2yte3ocM and if not trained in aikido, a faceful of OC pepper spray could have the same effect, after which he could be cuffed and transported to the local psycho ward.

    1. Sosalty   11 years ago

No, a course in aikido won't do it. All sorts of training, and weaponary has been piloted and police have died. The safest response when confonted by an aggressor is a firearm, for the innocent that is.

  28. PabloSanchez   11 years ago

Texas restaurants are going to need rifle racks.

  29. crufus   11 years ago

I don't see things going well for the Huey P. Newton Gun Club.

I predict SWAT raids, drug busts, and suspects shot. The usual.

    1. Vulgar Madman   11 years ago

I don't think so. Not all bullies are cowards, but many are.

      1. crufus   11 years ago

That is why I predict SWAT raids. Lot easier to take down people and shoot them when they are asleep in the middle of the night. "Suspect reached for a gun..."

I think that is actually what happened to most of the original Black Panthers, so it's been done before.

  30. Akello   11 years ago

I hope this group addresses all the bad actors in their community. It's time for us Black folks to go Guardian Angels on our own community. This is the type of grassroots operation we need to curb the crime.

  31. C. S. P. Schofield   11 years ago

I would be a great deal happier if they had named their club so,ething else. But I am under the impression that in spite of the raving swine who asserted that the Black Panther Party was a criminal organization, the Black Panther Party WAS a criminal organizaion.

  32. v8beetle   11 years ago

I wish things like this could happen nationwide if only to bring the racists out of the closets in which they hide. Then maybe we can do the same to them as was done Donald Sterling and make jobs then available for those who actually deserve them.

  33. Jgv1   11 years ago

Note to self, do not visit south Dallas

  34. Asok Asus   11 years ago

Actually we need WAY more black gun owners, you know, the vast majority of blacks who are hard-working and law-abiding, just like everyone else. Those folks especially need to be armed to protect themselves from their neighborhood feral drug gangs.
