Who is More of a Threat to Civilization? Meter Maids or People Filming Meter Maids? The New York Times on the Free State Project
The New York Times devoted a front-page story the other day (yes, ye olde gray lady is still published in a "paper edition" with a "front page") to poking a little gentle fun at the Free State Project (FSP).
FSP, as longtime readers of Reason know, is an attempt on the part of libertarians to improve their political punching weight and create salubrious community for themselves by gathering en masse in one state, in this case New Hampshire.
It focuses on the attempts of the part of an FSP offshoot of sorts, "Free Keene," in which a particularly lively and pugnaicous group try street theater and direct action to point out that the state does a lot of things that can really piss people off.
The Times's Dan Barry, naturally, find the citizens more of a nuisance than the state:
Keene's two parking officers, both women, are often videotaped by young adults known as"Robin Hooders." They track the whereabouts of the officers by two-way radio, feed expired meters before $5 tickets can be written, and leave a business card saying that "we saved you from the king's tariff."….
Welcome to Sherwood Forest, N.H., where these acts of charity have led to some donations and gratitude, but also to sidewalk tensions, harassment allegations and litigation….
This gross harassment even led one parking official—an Iraq veteran, no less—to quit his job. (The story doesn't stress what getting a parking ticket can end up leading to if for whatever reason you don't or can't pay it and otherwise refuse to obey the authority of the meter maid. It can be ugly.)
The article stops along the way to point out that some locals don't appreciate the public acting out of libertarian impulses (I wonder if any of the complainers ever had a meter fed for them by the Free Keeners?) and also that lots of FSPers are white men. It is very, very important that you understand that, for some reason.
Barry focuses on one Free Keener, Ian Freeman:
Mr. Freeman, born Ian Bernard….hasn't paid federal taxes for a decade….he broadcasts his nationwide "Free Talk Live" radio show several nights a week.
Mr. Freeman, 33, has been repeatedly arrested, and once served 58 days in jail for disorderly conduct after standing in front of a police car to protest a woman's arrest because she had an open can of beer. He is guided, he says, by his "voluntarist" belief that "all human interaction should be consensual," which might surprise the human parking officers who do not consent to being followed or videotaped.
This shadowing of parking enforcement officers has received the most publicity by far. Videotapes show the officers being dogged by activists who sometimes goad with pleasantries like: "How do you live with yourself?"
Keene strikes back!
After the officers complained about skyrocketing stress last year, the situation became even more surreal, with Keene hiring a private investigator to follow and videotape the activists following and videotaping the parking enforcers. The city then filed a legal complaint against several activists, including Mr. Freeman, accusing them of harassment and seeking a buffer zone between activist and parking officer….
Who is harassing whom? The people with the authority to kidnap over drinking a certain beverage in public, or (ultimately) to kill over a fine for overstaying a parking meter? (That doesn't have the death penalty, you say? See what continuing to resist the ticket and everything that follows from that might get you.)
In December, a Cheshire County Superior Court judge cited free-speech protections in dismissing the city's complaint, as well as its request to be reimbursed for costs that included therapy sessions for the officers. The activists celebrated a victory in the courts they disdain; the city appealed.
To the Times' mentality, filming or speaking to people with the legal power to fine and arrest is far more declasse and objectionable than fining and arresting over what you drink, smoke, or how long a car is parked.
My December 2004 Reason feature on the early days of the Free State Project.
I blogged in February about a California lawsuit challenging Los Angeles' parking ticket policies as being possibly a violation of the Constitution.

I used to be a frequent contributor to the Free Talk Live Bulletin Board.
same handle, too.
It used to be a lot more lively, but they really cracked down on the trolls, I think.
It seems to be primarily a "porn and bash the Christians" site, anymore.
I listened to their radio program for a while, but got bored hearing about how important it was for people to get arrested for possession of marijuana.
Now you just talk to yourself, eh?
Has anyone posted this yet!
Company doesn't like negative reviews on Amazon
Yeah, this morning
It was a long day. Left home at 5am and arrived back at 7pm. Had one meeting that went 3.5 hour meeting. Fuck that shit. I got some beer and took tomorrow off.
This company really fucked up. There are like a million negative reviews for them now on Amazon, and their facebook page has been totally trashed with negative comments.
I just heard, not sure if a rumor or not, that Amazon has refused to continue selling their products,
That's awesome.
These shitbags thought they could scare the guy into removing the comment. And you are right, they REALLY fucked up. For as much as business/corporations are on people's shit lists (rightfully or not) this was EXTREMELY stupid.
Someone tried this same thing on Yelp a while back and they finally wound up having to back off after all of the negative backlash. I guess some people don't pay too much attention.
Yeah, they really did the proverbial cut off their own nose to spite their face. Good, I hope the assholes never sell another product.
The product is still listed, but there is a long list of 1 star reviews that began this week
Reviews:
Just added my own to the mix. Also included the words Streisand Effect.
Look at it from the point of view of the guy who can't find a parking space while other people park without paying. Or from the point of view of the guy who *does* pay but may as well not bother since nobody else does.
Government property is in trust for the public as a whole. Letting some random person get a free ride (so to speak) for use of that property, rather than paying the user fees, strikes me as unfair.
The libertarian solution, if you want to get technical, should be to sell off the parking lots to private companies, so they can decide whom they will let park on their property and in exchange for what amount of money.
"Government property is in trust for the public as a whole. Letting some random person get a free ride (so to speak) for use of that property, rather than paying the user fees, strikes me as unfair."
Nice try, but there is no "free ride"; it's just that someone else freely paid the fee.
If you mean the Robin Hood people, it's OK if they pay for the time between the expiration of the parking and the meter-feeding, otherwise not OK.
"it's OK if they pay for the time between the expiration of the parking and the meter-feeding, otherwise not OK."
Whaa?
OK, you park at noon and pay for half-an-hour's parking. At 1:30, your car is still there and the meter has been expired for an hour, but Robin Hood comes by and gives you an extra hour. You return to your car at 2:30. You got free parking for an hour!
Which is fine if a private parking lot decides not to be a stickler for enforcement - it's their policy and they can waive it in the interest of customer goodwill. But can the government let public property be used in this way, opening the door to arbitrary law enforcement?
Notorious G.K.C.|5.8.14 @ 8:18PM|#
"OK, you park at noon and pay for half-an-hour's parking. At 1:30, your car is still there and the meter has been expired for an hour, but Robin Hood comes by and gives you an extra hour. You return to your car at 2:30. You got free parking for an hour!"
Any "free ride" is a result of the government not enforcing the rules.
Robin Hood had no effect on that at all; RH *paid* for the additional time and the gov't ought to thank him
Certainly a useful perspective, though there's a down side: These merry men covered up the evidence of the violation, which otherwise the meter maid might have caught before 2:30.
Now, I'm not going to die on this hill, because it's a fairly minor matter. And I'm not endorsing all the city's legal actions against the protesters. I was just commenting that so long as the government owns property, it ought to either act as a responsible property owner - or sell the property to a private person.
"These merry men covered up the evidence of the violation, which otherwise the meter maid might have caught before 2:30."
That's a supposition; if this happened then that might have happened.
RH remains the fee payer at this point.
Now a private company could quite rightly balance customer goodwill against strict revenue collection and decide not to be jerks about being a little over, but I don't think we can trust the govt to strike that balance - if given discretion to ignore violations, they'd just practice favoritism and/or laziness and revenue would plummet.
Going back to the movie thread, I would suggest a drama about a heroic businessman whose quest to build a parking garage serving the people who work downtown is threatened by a bunch of hippies.
More realistic for the parking garage builder to be zoned out of business by the government that doesn't want to lose meter income.
Running out of parking is almost never a problem in Keene, NH. I've spent a fair amount of time there as that's where my family is from.
To the Times mentality, filming or speaking to people with the legal power to fine and arrest is far more declasse and objectionable than fining and arresting over what you drink, smoke, or how long a car is parked
Because they worship authority. You can't believe how much resisting authority bugs some people who aren't even the ones being resisted (*cough* Tulpa *cough*). It fucking drives them up a wall. I like to torture these people the most.
"This gross harassment even led one parking official?an Iraq veteran, no less?to quit his job."
Well, he was "othered".
"an Iraq veteran, no less"
That burns my ass, talk about gratuitous, so in the average progs mind, this guy who any other day is a soulless bushpig minion, unrepentant babykiller, likely hate group member and potential domestic terrorist, is human again because he was mercilessly mocked by a band of lawless savages in their pursuit to drive anarchism down everybody's throat by paying expired parking meters... and his service is relevant to the same NYT that wrote this steaming pile of horse-shit? Talk about brass balls.
"He is guided, he says, by his "voluntarist" belief that "all human interaction should be consensual," which might surprise the human parking officers who do not consent to being followed or videotaped."
Actually, the officers did consent to being followed and videotaped the moment they accepted the job and became public servants.
You'll notice they mention that one of the parking meter cops quit his job--and guess what? I bet he isn't followed and videotaped by anyone anymore. ...except the NSA, but that's hardly the fault of Free Staters, now, is it.
"...except the NSA, but that's hardly the fault of Free Staters, now, is it."
Well, see, he still has a choice; he can kill himself!
Whenever somebody wants government to do something, I want to ask "Is it worth killing for?" Because that's the ultimate power of government. It is the people who kill people, and nothing else happens.
I witnessed a full on parking war one afternoon in Annapolis, a couple of years ago. We were sitting outside at a restaurant and this car pulls up and a little butch dyke looking meter maid hops out and starts slapping tickets on every single car parked outside of a restaurant across the street.
Someone at a table next to us says 'There's that bitch again, she's doing it again!' Just then a guy comes out the door of the restaurant and rips the ticket off of an SUV and throws it on the ground. That's when I noticed that the guy was valet parking cars. He gets in the SUV and starts driving and meter maid cunt is running along side him and then I hear him saying something to the effect of 'Fuck off bitch, we're tired of your shit!'. And she says 'You can't talk to me like that!.' And he says 'I'll talk to you however I want, bitch!'.
All of the sudden there is a crowd gathered and the manager of the restaurant across the street is outside.
Finally, meter maid bitch gets back in her car and drives off, to applause from the crowd. I was loving it. Apparently the city was conducting some type of war on the restaurant owner.
Kinda mixed about that story as, thanks to Mr Hero Valet, some poor bastard has an unpaid parking fine hanging over his head.
I have a feeling those fines weren't legit.
You would be correct from that I gathered. None of the cars were illegally parked, there was some type of vendetta being carried out by the city, against the restaurant owner.
Yes, but "legit" is often in the eye of the badgeholder - beholder these days.
OT:
Locals (including the bizz folk) rebel against express bus lines. They remove a lane from the street and, natch, there goes the parking.
"Why bus rapid transit has stalled in Bay Area"

Cripes. San Francisco and Berkeley will let nothing stop the War on Cars.
Hey Sevo, since you're in SF, maybe we should have a H+R meetup some day. Have a beer. Anacreon is in the East Bay. Maybe some others are nearby.
I'll be behind the potted palm, with the carnation in my lapel...
Seriously, not sure how to arrange it, but at least we'd hear something other than how wonderful that hag Pelosi is.
Great idea, let's do it.

All the news that's fit to equivocate.
The New York Times
The New York Times, I hear, also has themselves a big ol giant Boosh boner. They wants them some more boosh, and they can't get enough.
Where's Shreek?
I hear that phoney IRS scandal won't go away.
Of all the fronts libertarians have to fight the state, parking meters are the dumbest. You use a resource (parking space) you must pay for it. Ideally it would be privatized by the non-ideal solution closest to the market is to meter it. These guys are kind of idiots. They should stalk cops while wearing body armour or an invisibility suite.
You use a resource (parking space) you must pay for it.
Using a resource that was stolen and is maintained by theft doesn't create an obligation.
Give it back to the Saxons! No, I'm hung up on the Robin Hood metaphor...give it back to the Indians!
You're paying back the theft. It's either that or taxes, a much worse theft on top of the original theft.
No, meter maids are the lowest forms of life on earth. You aren't paying for the spot, it 's a fucking scam.
If I park in a parking lot that charges by the minute/hour, and I'm 10 minutes later than I planned getting back, I pay for an additional 10 minutes or an additional hour. A meter is like a dime for 10 minutes, but if I'm 10 minutes late on the meter I get to shell out $5-10.
Fuck those fucking statist pieces of human garbage. They profit on people's misfortune.
Okay the rate/penalty structure has to change. But it still has to be metered.
In parts of SF, most meters are $2-$3.50/hour. They are testing meters that change from 25 cents to $6/hour.
And the idea of a $5 expired meter makes me smile. Is Keene NH in some sort of '60s time-warp? Of course, San Francisco has a lot of gender reassignment surgery to pay for.
Lovely Rita, meter maid
Why are you such a fascist?
Oklahoma? WTF?
As high as an elephants eye

I love this part. You know, because having an open can of beer is a heinous crime that shouldn't be defended against.
And then, in the same paragraph, apparently being on duty as a 'public servant', and protecting the public, allows you privacy, right? For what reason? Why don't you want your noble deeds for the public good being filmed?
The New York Times fascist checklist:
Hates freedom: Check
Defends non-transparency by government: Check
Loves them some more Boosh cock: Check
"which might surprise the human parking officers who do not consent to being followed or videotaped."
Pretty sure when you take a job, you pretty much agree that your BOSS (yes, Mr/Ms parking meter attendant, that's the taxpayer) can use various methods to ascertain whether you're doing your job.
So the whining can go right where the sun don't shine; shaddup and get to work.
OK, excuse me, but where the HELL do you get that last point? Has the New York Times said anything remotely nice about any member of the Bush clan since, say, 2004? If so, I missed it.
Not saying that Bush is a good guy; that's a different argument. Just confused that ANYONE thinks the NYT likes Bush.
I had reason to look for a picture of Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls just now, and came across this wonderful piece of derp from last October.
Who knew that little Laura was such a racist white supremacist. And her little doggie too!
"The Ku Klux Klan and Nazi Germany are "part of history" too"
That's the sort of inspired wisdom we normally associate with YouTube commenters.
It's always great to see people judge writers of the mid-1930s with their personal 2014 values, and, of course, express hatred for the awful people of 80 years ago for not being more "enlightened." I
The funny day, of course, will come when people in 2100 think of these current bloggers as sadistic assholes for something they presently do as "normal" every day.
jack off?
Just because you find masturbation sadistic doesn't mean everybody else does.
To get this back to Laura Ingalls but keep it on the sex theme, in real life she had three younger siblings (one of whom died in infancy). Surely in that little house on the prairie she must of heard the bumping and grinding and moaning of the sex between Charles and Caroline that produced the aforementioned issue.
Ah, yes, the famous "deleted scenes." Some say those were burned, others say they were deposited in the Miskatonic University library and that anyone who reads them goes mad.
Never mind that LIW was writing about stuff that happened in the 1870s and 1880s.
Projecting today's values into the past is an informal fallacy called "presentism."
I haven't seen H&R this quiet in a long time.
Is it that there's no TI tonight? Or is there a big orphan sale that I don't know about?
It's the NFL Draft, also known as the Shiny Rookie Treasure Hunt.
Fuck! I knew that was coming up. I've been working so much, I can't even think about such things as that.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand the fascination with the draft. I'll check to see who the Steelers picked up and where the Penn State guys landed when it is all said and done. Watching it live on TV? Shoot me.
The smoke never clears...

I dare you to find one sensible thought in this entire article. Just one.
Just so you don't suffer shock from the stupidity, here is a snippet to ease you into it.
Why do Growthers think we should add billions more humans to the world? Do they want more consumers? Or is it something deeper, more biblical, more fruitfully multiplied? All of the above?
Don't read the comments.
I relish the thought of 'growthers' growing and multiplying while these miserable people wither and die off.
The author was born in 1955.
So let's say the year his girlfriend said that was 1980.
According to the World Bank, 1.9 billion people were in poverty in 1981 with 56% survey coverage.
In 2010? 1.2 billion with 85% survey coverage.
If we assume no one in the unsurveyed populations was in poverty in 1981 and everyone in the unsurveyed populations was in poverty in 2010, that still only bumps the latter up to 1.4 billion.
So, under those very favorable (to neo-Malthusians) assumptions, while the population in 2010 was 150% of the 1981 population, the number of people in poverty, not the poverty rate, was 74% of what it was previously.
That narrative you have, Carl Safina: it sucks. It sucks hard.
I fucked up the numbers.
That should be 2.2 billion in poverty in 2010.
That is still only 115% of what it was in 1981.
That's under the very-favorable-to-Safina assumptions.
Bah, I think I'm interpreting "survey coverage" statistic incorrectly.
2010 matches up fine; the 5.8 billion surveyed is 85% of the 6.8 billion population.
But in 1981, the surveyed population was 3.7 billion out of 4.5 billion. That's 82%, when the survey coverage is reported at 56%.
Carl,
Suffice to say that as the population has grown, human welfare has improved, in spite of statists' efforts to fuck it up at every opportunity.
I don't get that either. But I think that tables 5, 6, and 7 in their paper provide the information you were getting at. It depends on the poverty line they choose, but for poverty defined at less than/equal to $1.25/day, absolute numbers have decreased. For $2/day, it is about the same, and for $2.50/day, it is higher by about 300 million people. But the percentage living in poverty has decreased for any of the poverty lines, though some regions have fared better than others (which is expected).
I'd say that your broader point still stands.
The numbers are down there well off the first search page, since the popular delusion has it that WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!, and that drives where the links land on the pages.
Regardless, the net numbers show the absolute number of people and the percentage of people living in poverty has decreased over the last 40 years or so, even with a greater dollar value as a definition.
Julian Simon was right and Ehrlich is a failed prophet. And he's a wrong in general and in specifics.
This is a wonderful fact to know. Of course idiots like that guy would probably just change the definition of poverty to meet their needs.
No, I screwed it up.
See below for better numbers, which are still overwhelmingly in favor of human progress.
What exactly do you think he was saying with "you are likely to stop rowing before you hit Newfoundland"? That was the point, moron.
You know you've reached peak derp when you can't successfully slay your own straw man.
I can't bear reading the rest. This is a good response, though.
I couldn't take it seriously. Every sentence seemed stupider than the last. From the beginning, he talks about never ending population growth, conveniently ignoring that the population is predicted to stabilize near the middle of this century. But his arguments were so seriously flawed that I don't think he was even being disingenuous. Just really, really dumb.
..."From the beginning, he talks about never ending population growth, conveniently ignoring that the population is predicted to stabilize near the middle of this century."...
Jackand Ace, over in the AGW thread, was claiming that unless we did whatever the 'authorities' wanted to be done, well, "nothing" was being done.
Damn strawmen take a hell of a beating.
OT: Another meme (or whatever you prefer to call it).
*shakes fist*
Marxian identity politics teaches you that the validity of an argument or an idea depends on the heritage and provenance of the group that espouses it and not on the soundness of said argument or idea.
Just ask our resident Marxian, Tony, who keeps insisting on pointing out that the libertarian movement is mostly composed of white males, as if the concepts of freedom and markets could not ever be held by anybody who is not white and male. I did point out to the little twerp that there are plenty of non-white Latin-American libertarians just south of the border, all the way to the Patagonia.
Well, I can confirm that there are likely plenty of libertarians in Brazil.
The first one that I met, I was on a plane back from Brasilia, to Atlanta. I was sitting next to a young man holding a copy of Atlas Shrugged. I commented on it, and when he realized that I was Norte Americano, he wanted to talk to me about Ron Paul. Seriously.
Now, I personally know several libertarian Brazilians. Sorry to inform you all, they are all white males.
But, I don't think all of them are.
Crazy Brazilians
and the rise of public transportation costs, Portugese-written signs that read "Who is John Galt?" and "More Liberty!" showcase the efforts of the Estudantes pela Liberdad (Brazil's Students For Liberty)'s involvement in the current revolution in Brazil.
Most of the Brazilians that I know, have much more of a naturally libertarian attitude than the majority of Americans. Say what you want, if you don't know them like I do, and do not spend time with them, you don't really know.
Pure delusion: Clinton can win 45 states
Her campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train because she's so popular, soo... she'll probably win all 57 states in the end...
Isn't this the same moron who compared Kerry to Winston Churchhill last week? Is he angling for an MSNBC job?
I dunno, The New York Times is pulling for Boosh 3, and Shreeky is silent.
Continuing on the same tack as above, but using 1987 as the benchmark year, because it has a similar survey coverage rate (82% vs. 84% for 2010).
That gives us 1.77 billion in poverty in 1987 vs. 1.21 in 2010. So, a 0.56 billion absolute drop, and 68% of what it was.
The surveyed populations were 4.18 billion in 1987 vs. 5.89 in 2010. That's a 1.71 billion increase, and 140% of what it was.
So: the population increases by 1.71 billion but the number in poverty drops by 0.56 billion.
That's pretty fucking amazing for human progress.
Johnny Manziel to help the Browns let 'something' down, one more time.
Stupid draft.
Anyway, Apple may buy Beats (of the "by Dr. Dre" variety) for $3.2 billion.
Hey! That's not fair! I spent more time typing?
I guess great posters link alike.
Not that stupid, it's looking like the Texans are going to get Clowney and Bridgewater without trading anything away.
And since we shipped him out to Cleveland, whatever dumb fuck with too much money to spend can take down all the retarded Keep Johnny Football in Texas billboards on every goddamn highway.
I keep envisioning Manziel as another Tebow, just with more talent. But not star NFL quarterback talent. College, yes, NFL, no.
BTW, who thinks that Raiders got the better pick with Mack?
And of course the Vikings jump up and steal him at the last minute. For fucks sake.
Apple is going to buy Beats Electronics for $3.2 billion.
http://business.financialpost......=bf25-caa2
I've heard that Beats headphones are over-rated but I forget where. In any event I have no idea why Apple would make this expensive acquisition. It seems Apple and Facebook are following the 'spend way too much money on company purchases that don't make sense and then run go bust when they don't work' model of going out of business.
Two things:
1. Apple sells a lot of beats headphones in its stores.
2. Some people have made the claim that Beats struck really good licensing deals with the record companies for its streaming service. Maybe Apple expects to save some money that way.
I don't know if those factors will justify the price or not.
Then again, it does seem like it is a decent business in its own right. And if Apple can establish Beats as a status symbol in rising economies like it has with its own brand, there is a lot of growth potential.
Also, I don't know the specific rules, whether this is applicable to Beats (I guess it might depend on the countries where the shareholders reside / are based), etc., but supposedly a lot of the tech acquisitions are fuelled by the fact that Apple, Google, Facebook, et al. have hoards of cash abroad that they don't want to pay taxes on to repatriate.
Hell, even Yahoo has a lot of cash IIRC, and stands to have $10-$15 billion more depending on how the Alibaba acquisition goes.
Ms. Mayer will hand it over to Obo for campaigning.
Who the fuck cares about Beats?
Derpbook bought Oculus. Is that not like 10x zillion times more important? Can Derpbook fuck up VR? Can they NOT fuck it up?
Oh yes they can and they will!
Obviously, the billion-person MMO is a long ways off, but the company has its eye on a stepping stone: Oculus hopes to convince players that they're having a "real conversation" with another person.
http://www.theverge.com/2014/5.....h-facebook
Yes! Just what we want! Not a revival of the FPS genre to make it interesting or an RTS controlled by an Ender's Game-style command view. No, it's Another Fucking MMO! I'll get to talk to the 12-year olds and to the Koreans too...if they speak English. Thanks Derpbook!
Thank God Sony is developing its own VR headset. They've saved this gen of consoles AND the next gen of VR.
Oculus hopes to convince players that they're having a "real conversation" with another person.
While seeing a real marketing add, in 3D?
The problem with Sonys Morpheus, is that it is, as are as I know, only going to work with PS4.
The Xbox 360 controller can be made to work with your computer with the right software mod, right? Can't it be the same for the Sony Morpheus?
I wouldn't want a controller to work with my PC. Controller is one of the reasons why I don't like consoles. I'll stick with my G710+ and Rat 7.
I think that Sony specifically stated that the Morpheus is only for PS4 games.
Hopefully, Facebook leaves Oculus alone long enough for them to release a commercial quality headset dedicated to PC games, and not some social media non-sense. When that happens, I believe that revenue will quickly prove too high to not let the team chiefly focus on games.
Makes sense.
I looked up your gear...you know you're still clicking your enemies to death, right? You know that's lame, right?
Until I get my full on VR, with multi-directional holodeck and real time no lag motion sensors, I'll continue clicking my enemies to death.
You won't need the 'Holodeck' that'll be the Virtuix Omni. Fair enough, we're looking forward to the same thing.
You won't need the 'Holodeck' that'll be the Virtuix Omni.
Right, I didn't really mean to use that term 'holodeck'.
Don't need a mod at all, Microsoft sells 360 for windows controllers. And you are both wrong, sometimes controllers are better and sometimes Keyboard Mouse is better. KB+M is better for FPSs 99% of the time though.
I'm not playing anything that is not first person, or first/3rd person. So it's all good.
It's really all about the design of the game, whether it was built with a controller in mind or not. Bastion comes to mind as a game I would generally feel would be better with KB+M but controller just worked better. I rarely bring it out for anything but platformers though.
I never said I always want a controller though I guess I implied it. You are absolutely right about everything riding on what the game was designed for. Halo = controller HL2 = KB +mouse or better yet a substitute for a mouse that doesn't seem lame (joystick).
Totally OT question for Hyperion:
I hear that Rousseff is no longer a lock for re-election at least without a run-off. I know that she has one pro-markets competitor but there is also an outright socialist running. Who's the support running to? Should libertarians be afraid? In any event, you can just high-tail it to America. Or Canada.
Dilma is just a Lula clone. Nothing new to see here.
Haven't kept up. But it's a lot like here now. The uneducated freeper crowd just outnumbers the informed voter.
As far as liberty is concerned with winning elections, we are definitely ahead of the curve with that, over Brazil. People there are just starting to pay attention to politics, they have a few years to catch up to us in the new enlightenment. Hopefully, that's the direction we are headed in. Otherwise, I have to say they might drive over the cliff into oblivion, right on our heels.
You know what's a threat to our civilization?
The Bruins winning another Stanley Cup.

my goto sources have been letting me down.
Agreed, though I've spent most of it studying for finals tomorrow. I think it was that Reason event tonight that stole away all our west coast that explains the quiet here.

I am kind of sympathetic to the meter maids. I wouldn't take out you frustrations on some person just trying to get through the day.
Nobody likes a jackass.
What is Robin Hooding? It is a form of activism where activists try to prevent people from having their money taken from them by paying an expired meter before a parking enforcement officer can write a ticket on the expired meter. Mutilmeter reviews
