Open Carry of Guns Freaks Out Provincial BloombergView Editors

Soon after I moved from New York City to Flagstaff, Arizona, I did a double-take in a fast food joint when I saw a man in line with a pistol on his hip. "Aren't undercover cops usually more undercover?" I thought. Then it occurred to me that he was just a regular guy carrying a gun.
Needless to say, nobody else waiting to order burgers and fries batted an eyelash. That's usually the way it is in places with long experience in what's called "open carry"—places like the entire state of Arizona.
To the editors at BloombergView, though, open carry is a looming peril that reveals gun rights advocates' extremism and terrorizes the cowering populace.
Employees of a Jack in the Box restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas, got a glimpse last week of an America where the more extreme element of the gun-rights movement has its way. Their reaction? They hid in the freezer. Parents in a public park in Georgia, confronted by another display of gun rights, called 911.
Both the employees and the parkgoers were reacting to the presence of armed men in their midst. Police, however, could do nothing to ease their anxiety: These hair-trigger scenarios are precisely what such open-carry states have written into law.
Aaaaagh!
Actually, that editorial reveals that the editors of BloombergView are pretty damned culturally provincial. Open carry is not a strange, new phenomenon. It's common throughout the West, and even in eastern states like New Hampshire. New Hampshire Public Radio reported last year that the practice is long legal and increasingly common in that state. Manchester police underwent extra training to make sure they understood and respected the right.
The Jack in the Box incident occurred because, as OpenCarry.org puts it, "Texas is not a traditional open carry state." The armed and hungry people were protesters trying to change matters. They were bounced from Open Carry Texas, a gun rights group, for being so damned clumsy about it.
Georgia, also, "is not a traditional open carry state. However, open carry IS legal with a Georgia permit." The incident there seemed to be the result of sheltered suburbanites unaccustomed to the practice running into a guy who was a bit abrasive about asserting his rights.
Then again, some people are just dead set on pissing themselves over nothing. I witnessed attendees at a Cambridge, Massachusetts, office birthday party flip out over the sight of a pocket knife after they'd asked if anybody had something with which to cut the cake.
I still own that knife. The blade is 2.5 inches long. I told them that next time, they could karate chop the fucking cake.
BloombergView editors insist that "social norms long discouraged open carry even where it was legal" and that "the more such acts of intimidation take place, the more they will make manifest the divide between responsible gun owners and zealots."
Maybe. But a growing number of states permit the practice, and if people in New Hampshire can grow accustomed to neighbors openly packing heat, Georgians and Texans will likely do the same.
When I first moved to Flagstaff, it wasn't the presence of the gun that surprised me, but the open display. After all, like others I know, I'd spent years illegally packing heat in New York City, to ward off predators in a way that restrictive laws can't.
Somebody tell the folks at BloombergView. That should really get them to moisten their knickers.

"they could karate chop the fucking cake."
nice.
Great. It will now be my life's mission to find an opportunity to use that one.
b-b-b-but guns are sc-sc-sc-scary
I love how Tucille openly admits to breaking the law. We need more of this.
I also now have a deep hope to someday ruin a party with a knife. Hopefully with no stabbing, but I'll do what I have to do.
"That's not a knife..."
I see you've played Knifey-Spooney before.
"...it's a space station!"

In most places blades of 2.5" or less are not considered weapons. Where I come from every man used to carry a pocket knife for nail trimming, whittling, box-cutting, etc.
One of the funniest moments ever was when a (girl) cousin asked a yankee friend if she could "borrow his knife". The realization that as an adult male that he was expected to have a knife was priceless.
It still amazes me (a real Yankee, not whatever you people from the south think that means) that everyone doesn't carry a pocket knife now. How can you not have a knife with you? Except for air travel, I don't think I've ever not had a knife in my pocket.
Mine's in a drawer. I quit carrying it after 9/11 when the TSA made it impossible to travel with one, and my fortune 500 employer prohibited them at work.
All of my supervisees have switchblades now since they are legal in NH to carry and like to play with them at work. Not sure what the management out in CA would think of that.
"yankee" = person who moves from Neew York or Calyfornia and wants to be a Texan.
"Welcome! Here's your Wasn't born in Texas but got here as fast as I could bumpersticker. Lemme buyou a drink."
"damyankee" = person who moves here and wants Texas to become Neew York or Calyfornia.
"See this here little hole? It's 0.457" but we round off to "forty-five." If'n you don't savvy inches we have them in 10mm and 12 gauge."
Agreed on the subject of pocket knives. Texas just un-prohibited switchblades too.
Western Civilization is doomed to die, whimpering, when everything comes in plastic bubbles and you can't possess anything sharp enough to open one.
And when Texas grows up, it wants to be Indiana: Blades are not weapons and unrestricted (TX limits to 5.5" blade). CCW is $125 for life and requires no training. Open carry has always been legal with license. Cops generally don't ask for your license unless you're doing something illegal to start with.
Idaho requires no license to open carry. In fact, many people (including many legislators) believe that the legislature actually does not have the power to regulate open carry, based on language in the Idaho Constitution. Legislation was also just passed in Idaho to allow concealed carry on state college campuses.
you have to have a knife all the time if you work construction, save maybe for a few trades (like a framer, I figure he'd save the belt space to keep other more important stuff, no need for a small knife when all you do is handle large lumbers)
I figure this is part of the reason for the 2.5" rule in anti-gun states. You CAN'T outlaw knife carrying and have a functioning society. Though, I wouldn't put it above the liberals to try.
That's why Tucille is my hero...swoon...
One of the first rights of passage in my culture is when a woman or older girl asks to borrow your knife.
Double-entendre, intended or no?
[bleep] [bleep] 2.5" [bleep] [bleep]
Back in the day, double points if you were at school and it was a teacher. We "open carried" our Cub Scout pocket knives in third grade.
[sigh]
Did you read his book? It's fun.
No, but it's sitting on my Kindle.
I also openly admit it.
I do not believe in asking permission for exercising my rights.
So!
The wife and I carry identical revolvers, mine is in my pocket right now. Hers is in her purse. I got off work before she did, I'm waiting for her to come home. I trust she won't have to shoot her way out of the Valley to get back to LA. There are only five rounds in her gun.
Seriously folks, an armed society is a polite society. Arizona has "security" well in hand with good old fashioned LIBERTY. Liberty is what is important, not "security".
The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to surround him with honest heat. Horrid mischief happens in LA here because the population at large is more often than not, totally unarmed, which emboldens the criminal element.
I'm proud of my belt bucket knife. I use it all the time. Even when I have my skinning knife right there on my belt.
This was a great country before 9/11. We made toy guns when I was a kid back in the 60's.
This queer celebrating nation has gone to hell in a hand basket, and a lot of my age group thinks this way. But when given an opportunity to dig themselves out of hell and end the Fed, they vote for establishment trolls like Boehner instead of the Tea Party candidate.
I'm am getting pretty embarrassed and disappointed.
I am really pissed off about Chemtrails.

I wonder what these perennial knicker-wetters would have done, had they been at my wedding and saw me cut the cake with a SWORD?
Probably had a full-blown panic attack, called 911, and shit kittens for an encore.
I really hate whinerbabies like them.
Dude you gotta send the pics.
Is it intimidation when I carry these guns?
Stop calling your arms "guns" Mr. Burgundy!
here's "showing your guns" in Pennsylvania
Open carry is legal where I live, though if you try it you can be sure the cops will come. That's because someone will call 911, and instead of informing the caller that open carry is legal, the operator will send out the goons. The goons will use it as an opportunity to run you for warrants and search you, though that's not legal since you've committed no crime. If you're lucky they'll let you go with a lecture. If you're unlucky they'll make up an excuse to arrest you.
There are several vids on YouTube that show the very thing you are talking about, and it is disgusting.
If you are a cop and you behave like this, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
If you're a cop and you behave like that you ought to get two to the back of the head like the fucking authoritarian coward you are.
/hyperbole (fuck you NSA)
If you are a cop and you behave like this, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
That would require them to have the capacity to feel shame, which they don't.
I see open carry all the time here. Not every single day, but generally once a week, most often in the supermarket. Nobody bats an eye, although I'm waiting for the day that some carpet-bagger pitches a fit.
Where do you live?
In L.A., I would probably end up getting shot by the fuzz for such an act.
Me too. And when that happens, I'll probably have a stronger reaction than the locals, kicking the guy in the balls and screaming "GO BACK TO MASSACHUSETTES!" Hehe, I think I'll have earned my Texan-ness (I live in New Jersey, but I been thinking about moving to Texas eventually)
And if you're exceedingly compliant and obsequious, they will claim you were resisting and kill you in order to get two weeks paid vacation.
Same here.
You from Connecticut like me? You are describing my state to a T lol
If it weren't for the zealots, the "responsible gun owners" would be screwed.
Why would you carry a gun if you weren't planning on killing things with it?
It's akin to wearing a football helmet all the time just in case a game breaks out.
"Why would you carry a gun"
Stop right there.
None of your business.
To be fair to the OP, I do intend to kill things when I carry a gun. But those things are malicious, pesty, and rare, so I don't use it very often.
This. People in this country need to shove their "trigger warnings" up their asses. MIND. YOUR. OWN. BUSINESS.
It doesn't matter why someone has a gun. As long as they aren't pointing it at you and asking for your wallet, that piece of metal has ZERO impact on your life. Move along, pleb.
Why would you wear a seat belt if you weren't intending to crash your car?
Total pwnage. Thanks, Barney.
RECKT
Why would you keep a fire extinguisher and smoke alarms in your house if you weren't planning on setting it on fire?
Why would you put a bumper on a car if you weren't planning on ramming things with it? Why would you buy health insurance if you weren't planning to be sick? Why would you ask stupid questions on a blog if you weren't planning on being a retarded dumb fuck?
Why would you carry a rubber if you weren't planning on getting laid ...EVER?
oh shit, I forgot about that. I wonder if I still have my backups in my car
Fuck you Guy.
Guy la Dumb - Why would I carry a fire extinguisher in my car if I am not planning on setting something on fire?
Have you ever eaten at a Luby's?
Congratulations. You managed to outderp even Alice Bowie.
I usually reserve this for PD or Tony, but you've earned, congrats:
Your new theme song. Enjoy.
Congratulations, youve won the Derp of the Day Badge, which comes with a clip instead of a pin, because you're special.
Why have a brain if you never intend to use it.
Oh my god! I just realized, my father, who carried an oxyviver in the boot of his car planned to deprive someone of oxygen and revive them. He was obviously some sort of hideous Frankenstein-wannabe, not the respected country doctor I thought he was.
* not the trunk, trunks are on the front of elephants not the back of cars
And henceforth JD was known as the sassy office libertarian. And knife-wielding psycho.
Is this actually true J.D.? You pulled out a pocket knife and people went apeshit?
I'm assuming it is true, I'm just having a hard time processing your story as I'm from Louisiana and have only ever lived here or Texas.
It's true. Not "call the cops" apeshit, but (big, staring eyes) "Whoah! Why do you have a knife?" Because...somebody might need to cut... a cake?
I've always carried a knife and I've had people ask me that too. "Are you gonna stab someone with that"? If you think I'm carrying a pocket knife to stab people, it says more about you than it does about me.
"Are you gonna stab someone with that"?
I got that bit from a girl who also called me a Neanderthal for carrying a 3 or 4" knife. She asked to borrow it soon after. I told her "Hold on while Tarzan find Jane stab-stab flint chip."
Don't do what Donny Dont does.
http://i.imgur.com/6lrWlDO.jpg
Then what do these people think when they go to Wal Mart, Academy, Sears, K-Mart, REI and see all those knives? Isn't this like the Sam Kinnison bit where he says "I don't want to drink and drive, but how else am i gonna get my car home?" How else are you supposed to carry a POCKET knife?
yeah... I recently got a bit of a reaction to my knife on a HIKING trip. Who the hell DOESN'T bring a knife when hiking? That's just ASKING to die in the woods. Not that I ever go hiking anywhere that remote (live in Jersey), but you never know.
The weird thing is that if you have a Leatherman with a 4" blade in the handle, they think you're just the humorous DIY guy who thinks he can fix his own car, but if you have a swiss army knife with a blade half the size, you're a suspicious time bomb just waiting to blow.
And if you have a knife you can open with one hand (or better yet, a switchblade which is what i carry now), you are definitely about to murder someone.
gonna have to make a point on this one. A switchblade makes it much much faster to open the knife, which is a very significant factor. I'm not against guns for either in the home or carry in the streets, but SOME regulations are reasonable. A speed-open mechanism would have no advantage as a tool, and would probably have disadvantages. Not that knives have to be carred as a tool and can't be for self-defense. But realistically in most self-defense situations (where you aren't fucked because the other guy has again and where you'd immediately acquiesce) you'll have time to do the two-handed flip open, as they're likely to be escalating fistfights with irate people. You wouldn't need to open up the knife in a split second. A switchblade seems more designed for an quick, unexpected attack at close quarters.
Furthermore, the kinfe thing is significant because kinfe atacks are actually way more deadly per attack than even gun attacks are; you easily completely cut through major arteries; a blade is much bigger than a bullet. So the whole thing is a significant issue.
It sounds stupid, but it isn't. I'm all for shall-issue CCW permits, and even permit-less open carry, and I wouldn't bat an eye to a guy open carrying like that guy was (assuming I'm in such a state). But I gotta side with anti-switchblade laws
Fuck regulations of weapons. They have not done any good ever. They just make idiots feel better.
Unless you're a farmer with his arm caught in a machine and cutting what's left of your arm off so you can get home for help and not bleed to death. I knew that guy at my church for 30 years. They grow them tough out on the farms.
A few yards of Gorilla tape had a cop giving me the hairy eyeball recently. A lady at Kroger had a broken radiator hose. I wrapped up the split, topped up the radiator and gave her the rest of the roll. The cop asked why I kept it in my car. I told him I travel a lot and showed him my Irwin 9-in-1 Screwdriver.
He was suspicious of somebody for carrying around gorilla tape? WTF.
It would be difficult to underestimate the average cops' intellect.
Watches too many mafia movies, I'd guess.
I would have had a hard time resisting the urge to answer with "to make stuff stick together"
I believe the correct answer is "to silence the screams of nosy cops."
Also acceptable: "to repair strangers' radiator hoses before taking them back to my rape dungeon."
If you're twisted, you can leave him to ponder the antecedent.
The cop asked why I kept it in my car.
After watching you repair a car with it.
Sigh.
- "A few yards of Gorilla tape had a cop giving me the hairy eyeball recently."
Are you sure it wasn't the rag and bottle of chloroform? 😉
"Because...somebody might need to cut... a cake?"
*applause*
I've gotten that reaction a few times from people and my response is always somethign along the lines of "why do you not have a knife?"
One should always have a knife and the means to make fire. I think the worst thing about the decline of cigarette smoking is that far fewer people carry lighters or matches.
See, I was going to post something very much like this. It is the year 2014; if you can't make fire or cut something, then WTF have the last 600,000 years been about?
I second your guys' thoughts
My grandfather always carried a pocketknife and he told me once that a good man always had a knife on him. It's disturbing to me, in exactly the opposite way it is to the people you describe, that many urbanites have become so milquetoast that they've lost the ability to fend for themselves.
This. I'm 53, and recall when it was as standard for a man to carry a modest pocket knife as it was for him to wear socks...and in fact the socks were probably more optional. That cutting implements are the single most useful utilitarian item devised by man in the past 100,000 years or so, and yet so many people can't fathom why you would want one with you at all time is mind-boggling.
Man, you pull out a pocket knife to cut a cake?? All I can think about is how much toe jam is piling up in that frosting. I'm passing on that cake. Maybe a cookie.
Same here Duke. It is somewhat annoying to me when I forget my knife. Doubly annoying if I need it, discover I forgot it at home, ask someone to borrow theirs and they don't have one either.
"Guy" plugs quarters into a machine and gets a coke. (Okay, it was Diet Sprite, but around these parts fizz in a can is a coke.) He pulls on the tab and the key comes off. He stands there, dismayed.
I pull my churchkey out of my pocket and hand it to him. He looks at it.
"Ah, do you know how to open a can with one of those?"
He scratches at the lid. "Yeah, I think. But not a pop-top can."
I take the churchkey and the can, rotate 90, and pop the lid open the old-fashioned way.
"Oh. Anybody could do that."
Dang near bit my tongue in half.
I grew up in the middle of MA and think of people from Cambridge as fucking pussy liberals.
Well, that's not very fair to the one's who aren't pussy liberals, few as they may be.
I live in California so this should be no surprise, but I had a checker at a grocery store almost scream once when I went to find change in my pocket.
I had a few live .38 rounds in my pocket along with the change. I dumped them out on the counter to sort through my coins and she freaked out.
A lot of people who don't know anything about guns and stuff seem to think that cartridges could just blow up at any moment.
And that they'll actually have the velocity to kill someone, which is, of course, not even close to the truth.
dude, didn't you guys know, guns kill people. They literally jump out of their holsters, walk up to people, and shoot them. Or they drive the carriers made with rage when they get even slightly angry, and cause him to shoot the person he's angry at.
Guns kill people, period. Ignore all other considerations.
If you were in DC, you could get arrested just for having a spent cartridge. California sounds like a libertarian paradise by contrast.
- "I had a few live .38 rounds in my pocket along with the change. I dumped them out on the counter to sort through my coins and she freaked out."
If you'd been here in TX you probably could have bartered them for your groceries. And if they'd been .22 LR you probably could have gotten change back.
You pulled out a pocket knife and people went apeshit?
No, he pulled out a pocket knife and massholes went apeshit. Massholes aren't people.
Yawn.
I had a guy in my office freak out when I pulled out a knife to cut some food at an office party.
It was a Leatherman Wave. He was particularly rattled that I opened it with one hand, and thought it was a switchblade.
Too lazy to look up for confirmation but I heard the guy was being an asshole about it, actively drawing people's attention to the fact that he had a gun so he could lecture them on his right to have it.
Good.
Not good.
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. ? Parents at a Forysth County park abruptly stopped a children's baseball game after growing suspicions of the behavior of a man carrying a gun in a waist holster Tuesday night.
"He's just walking around [saying] 'See my gun? Look, I got a gun and there's nothing you can do about it.' He knew he was frightening people. He knew exactly what he was doing," said parent Karen Rabb.
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news.....gam/nfhJS/
I'd have been concerned. You don't help the Second Amendment by pissing off parents.
I told them that next time, they could karate chop the fucking cake.
I hear paper can cut, if not handled responsibly.
After all, like others I know, I'd spent years illegally packing heat in New York City, to ward off predators in a way that restrictive laws can't.
I suspect there is no statute of limitations a crime this heinous. You had better stay out of New York.
No worries, De Blasio is working on the extradition paperwork now.
I can't wait to get out of NJ. Sheltered Liberals here will scream bloody murder if anyone besides a uniformed city/state employee were to wear a weapon.
Come south, Will. We welcome outsiders like you.
At least cross the Delaware. Hell, buy my house in Elkins Park.
Please.
Without realizing that the most dangerous person to handle a gun is the uniformed city/state employee.
Without realizing that the most dangerous person to handle a gun is the uniformed city/state employee.
Yeah, but only because it's currently illegal.
I've found most people in NJ are actually pretty conservative, and definitely more conservative than they vote if they vote liberal/leftist. Don't you find the same thing? I've yet to meet that many real liberals
Trigger warning - Threadjack ahead:

What's with cops and the name Dunphy?
Meh. Statistical, really. The predominance of the Irish in many police forces, most notably the NYPD whose numbers dwarf all others.
The Irish are notoriously slope-headed and brutal. No one is sure if it's caused by their drunkenness, their gingerness, or their Popery, but it's undeniable. I mean, Episiarch is a Mick, for fuck's sake.
How DARE you call me a mick!!! You're a mick! And a towel!
I'm a mic. A sarcas-mic.
Nicely done.
Hehehe!
Epi's not a Mick, he's a WOP, right? Epi, when you said WOP I assumed without papers, but what you really mean was without pigment?
Epi's a Mick all right. Haven't you noticed how he's always talking about the Virgin Mary and hunger strikes?
I'm drunk right now! And wearing green! And eating potatoes!
So you are not lace curtain Irish, you are shanty Irish?
My great-grandma used to tell my mom that she was lace Irish, not shanty Irish. I still don't really know what that means, but I'm glad my surname is a fine Scottish name, not a trashy Irish one.
I grew up being told our name was Scots-Irish, but when we moved to Scotland for a few years I was corrected that it was very English.
lace Irish = middle class. Comes, I believe, from the lace curtains that were popular in Victorian times.
shanty Irish = working class.
hmmmmm. I thought he was talking about his mother.
I suspect Irish is a Mic, but I didn't want to embarrass him by asking.

What's with cops and the name Dunphy?
AFAIK it was at one point an actual person whose name is now used by a variety of "Cops Online" as an avatar-thingy to indicate their copness without having to state it so obviously
Its possible that guy there was the original one. Our own Dunpher explained it all once. I wasn't really paying attention. I have seen it used by others in different places, however.
Thats it. Dunphy is a cop who writes a column. Our Dunphy chose the name because he is a fanboy.
I see you have been commenting there, Suthen.
I wonder if he's also a professional surfer, power lifter, bad ass guitar player, and married to Morgan Fairchild?
I think our former dunphy (who I think is dead) took his name from that dunphy who uses it as a pseudonym.
Not sure if serious...
Not very serious, but that is my working theory. I don't actually spend a lot of time thinking about dunphy.
He's dead all right. Killed in a shootout with a MS-13 gang while defending a Washington convent on a rare sunny morning. His negotiating skills convinced 113 bangers to drop their weapons but the 52 remaining had to go the "hard way".
Several Washington public schools have undergone name changes and a connecting Interstate and the Walla Walla International Airport will be renamed "Dunphy" in the coming months.
An unverified report that he was heart shot while holstering his weapon remains unclear.
He already said in one of these threads that that's what he did.
Ky is a traditional open carry state. Cops will harass you in Louisville and Lexington though.
Why are the editors of Bloomberg not alarmed by people in uniforms openly walking about heavily armed?
Of course, they probably don't read Balko.
"Lalalalala....I can't hear you."
/Bloombergian
Spot on, Tonio, spot on...
My thought exactly. The only open carry I see here in NYC is done by cops and by criminals - and I steer clear of both.
You say "cops and criminals" like they are two separate groups.
🙂
Cops wear black uniforms and have badges. Criminals are elected to office.
I'm pretty sure I'd have a hard time getting a block down Main street in Bozeman with the .45 strapped to my leg.
Try strapping it to your hip instead.
Pussies.
That's how they should be referred to. Goddamned, cowardly, fucking pussies. Perhaps they can be shamed into pretending to have a spine.
Last time I went to buy ammo there were a couple people carrying openly in the gun store, and my neighbor talks of seeing people carry openly at the convenience store up the street. Though it's not something I would do, just because I try to avoid attention from the police.
Maine has open carry? I didn't know that. Washington does too, but don't try it in Seattle. SPD don't really care whether it's legal or not. Because fuck you that's why.
Yeah, we got open carry. In my area we don't have a police force. The town pays the state and the sheriff to answer calls. So the cops mostly leave people alone. But once you get into an area with a dedicated police force, carrying openly is asking for trouble. Even though it's perfectly legal.
Epi, every time I read a story like this it further ensconces within my mind your discussion about the animism of anti-gun people. It really is naked primitive animism.
Absolutely, that's why I keep repeating it. The gun has become a supernatural token of evil for them. It has a life of its own to these morons. They're utterly irrational.
Of course, it's scary looking, loud, and sometimes people just randomly die because of it. It's like a grizzly bear that people keep in their houses!
These are the same people who think that cell phones work by magic, embarrassingly describe the noises their car makes to their mechanic, and treat their pets better than their family because "fluffy has such a vibrant personality and doesn't judge me like people do!"
They're barely beyond the intellectual level of a caveman. "Ook see magic piece of metal! Ook scared!"
It's the same people who think government-run anything (such as healthcare) is somehow magically "free".
Or magically efficient and nonviolent.
I'm seeing a guerrilla video project here.
A team of three, one open carrying in a state where it is explicitly legal, but in a city that harasses. Just for funsies, it might even be a non-firing gun, but I wouldn't carry it loaded or have ammo on me - gotta set the cops up here. One following behind to video the cops (openly). And one following behind to video the cops more covertly, to catch them harassing the first video guy.
I'm guessing you could catch violations of at least 4 of the BOR in less than a minute.
That's been done quite a bit.
Not enough, IMO.
Is a flap holster "open carry"?
If you have to carry concealed a flap holster is "open carry."
If you have to carry openly a flap holster is "concealed carry."
Did you have to ask?
In Jackson, WY, I once saw a dude walking down the sidewalk with his revolver in his hand. Since he unlocked and went into the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar at 6am, I assume he was the owner of the establishment and this was his usual commuting posture in case he ran into a burglar. Urban 20-something fraidy-cat that I was at the time, I actually thought it was pretty cool.
And now you're married to that cowboy?
I wish!
ehhh... I have a mix of reactions here.
In a lot, if not most places, where it's far, far more urbanised, a person carrying is a big deal, and would seriously freak most people because they'd assume you are immediately intending on using it, either to commit a crime, or to prevent one that is occuring. So there's a good reason for brandishing laws. I mean, I would immediately bolt, assuming the guy is going after someone robbing his store. Or I'd ask him if he wants me to call the cops.
But out in Wyoming, I guess that shit makes more sense. Out there, you have to carry all the time, since there's so much god damned wildlife. I bet motherfuckers get eaten by the wolves there in the middle of Cheyenne. Fuck that, have you seen the wildlife out there? You need to carry a CANNON with you at all time. HUGE wolves, huge bison, probably wolverines, bears.
If one is a federalist and is OK with states having their own policies, then why not have a state like Arizona where people like to walk around with guns and have a state like NY where the citizens prefer that people not walk around with guns.
SCOTUS already said that the 2nd amendment can be limited.
By limited you mean ignored, right?
I believe that tis is the best part of the American justice system. Nothing is written in stone.
There's the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Amendments, SCOTUS rulings, and the Executive can always instruct the Justice Department to enforce or not enforce.
It doesn't just end with the Second Amendment.
This is not the Qur'an
Yes, those rights you thought you had can be taken away at a whim. Great, ain't it?
I think calling an executive order/constitutional amendments/SCOTUS rulings a whim to be a far stretch
I think people in black robes declaring that "shall not be infringed" means "can be freely limited or outright banned" qualifies as a whim.
"I think calling an executive order"
See, I'd call ignoring your rights based on the mood of the President on a particular day the exact definfition of "on a whim".
yes, it is. It is a whim, when they blatantly ignore what's written. From the ban on private mail carriers, to the guy growing wheat on his property, to Pennsylvania's ruling on the fracking law, judges have pretty much just started making shit up and pulling it out of their asses.
Nothing is written in stone.
If the people's revolutionary truth demand it, then black is white and "shall be not infringed" is "may be infringed in whatever way we please".
The Constitution has primacy as law above the acts of the legislature. There is an amendment process, but "a couple of judges decided to change the plain meaning after the fact because people had hurt feelings" is not part of it.
Actually Alice, the Constitution is the supreme law of the land. No law may contravene it.
The second is pretty explicit, and yes, it is written in stone.
"...shall not be infringed." . That is pretty solid.
God you are a fucking idiot. Not to mention a fucking cowardly pussy.
Do you have the slightest grasp of why we have a constitution, moron?
It limits government power so the majority may not shit on the minority. 2A exists SPECIFICALLY so that 51% of the population MAY NOT take away ANYONE'S right to keep and bear arms. If that was not the intention, there would be no need for a constitution...we would simply pass whatever laws the democratically elected Congress chooses...
...Get it, dumbass?
Well, that's basically what we have now. It's it?
Perhaps I am an idiot to you people.
But from what i know, the constitution has been amended several times by a democratically elected congress.
It take a lot more than a vote of Congress to amend the Constitution, moron.
Congress doesn't have the power to amend the constitution. You might know this had you ever actually read the thing.
Again. proof of your idiocy.
The Constitution isn't amended by Congress you fucking moron.
It requires 2/3 of congress (or 2/3 of the states) followed by ratification by 3/4 of the states. Is everyone in NYC as ignorant as you?
Yes, and in many instances even moreso.
Amended via a lengthy process as laid out in the constitution.
And there is no 'perhaps' about it.
Of course it doesn't end with the second amendment. There are 8 more amendments in the Bill of Rights, and six other articles specifying the limited powers of each branch of government.
uhhhh..., no. SCOTUS specifically ruled that no gov can restrict at least the ownership aspect of the 2nd amendment. Even federalism has to follow the constitution, or else repeal the 14th. It's only a matter of time before they rule carry has to always be legal
Fuck off, moronic sockpuppet.
mick.
Is that a racial slur ?
Yes. Epi is a mick. But at least he's not Black Irish.
Dolly Parton is Irish?
If one is a federalist
Unverified assumption. Natural rights cannot be legitimately abridged by any government, no matter how small.
Government has imposed policies on bringing guns on to planes.
I direct you to ask your handler what the word legitimately means.
legitimately abridged
Someone no understand natural rights. Wikipedia is a good starting point.
A brain and the capacity for rational thought would be a better starting point. Sadly, some folks seem to be missing those.
Should states be allowed to ban abortion clinics?
Why not. At this point, having states rights is the best compromise with such diverse views on matters.
I would give to a charity to transport those people that couldn't afford an abortion to a neighboring state that allows it.

You're full of shit. So how about slavery then? Cool with you if some state decides to bring it back?
Jordan, I've posted on Slavery before.
Sometimes I feel that we should had never fought the Civil War. If you look at the South, those people fought to the DEATH and lost all of their wealth to keep Black people down. Not just in the 1800s but even today they are offended that blacks are given an even shake and sometimes given an edge.
But slavery involved personal liberty of human beings. This is different than a gun policy.
Beg that question!
"....even today they are offended that blacks are given an even shake..."
Where are you from Alice? I don't think you know what you are talking about, again.
NYC
Is it 1950 there? No, I know it's not because I live there and even I am not that ignorant of life in the US today.
Not just in the 1800s but even today they are offended that blacks are given an even shake and sometimes given an edge.
You've clearly never visited the south because if you had, you'd realize that the cartoonish image of the south being chocked full of redneck morons flying confederate flags from the back of their pickup trucks and trolling around looking for some "darkies" to beat up or kill is bullshit.
You've clearly never visited the south because if you had, you'd realize that the cartoonish image of the south
This is stunningly self-unaware coming from someone who on this very thread classified all people in Massachusetts as not being people. You might want to reflect on that.
Yup, the most cartoonish rednecks I've ever seen in my life (confederate flag on a white pickup with truck nuts) were in Ontario, Canada.
So where does 'personal liberty' begin, Alice? Where is the line, if the right to self defense is not personal liberty?
You may want to look at your own state of affairs before ridiculously accusing an entire region of out and out racism.
Fuck what is wrong with you people.
I have been through, and lived in, a large portion of this nation. The South has always struck me (admittedly a white guy), as friendly, and the further west you go the more tolerance you get.
The first time I ever ran into out and out white against black racism was in the far north of Iowa, maybe 20 miles south of Minnesota.
Now, black or Hispanic racism against whites or Asians is another story, but I have been assured that those incidents were not true racism, as only white people can be racist.
I could live with an open carry ban in certain cities if they had no license or true shall-issue for concealed carry.
And SCOTUS most certainly did not say that the 2nd amendment can be limited. That's just silly. Only 3/4 of states or a constitutional convention has the power to limit a part of the constitution. What they ruled is that it does allow some regulation of gun rights. But not allowing people to carry at all (as is effectively the case in NYC and many places) seems to pretty clearly violate the "bear arms" part. I don't see what else that can mean other than that people are allowed to carry weapons with them in public.
As long as AZ or NV residents can possess machineguns, short barrel rifles/shotguns, suppressors, etc. with only their state's law mattering, you might be on to something.
Then we can move on to a state law being the only say in the matter of possession of firearms by people under 18, or manufacture, sales, etc.
The same people who resort to pleading for NYC to be able to have their own laws while other areas have theirs are the same exact people who lose their minds if the subject is abortion instead of guns.
Good ones, 2Chili. It's becoming apparent that you and Elizabeth Nolan Brown are trying to best each other in the Snark-O-Drome. Right now, you're getting whooped by Ms. Brown.
Huh?
ENB the brainwashed statist idiot?
THAT ENB?
She's fucking awful.
Can't tell if serious.
Very.
You need to relax, bud.
Not anymore, I stopped reading her crappy "obvious statist poorly trying to write for libertarians" garbage and feel miles better.
Thanks for the concern though.
What in the world are you even talking about?
Wat.
No one else has said it so I will: Too Chilly, this column is a work of art my friend. The Alt-Text is among the best I've ever hovered my icon over, the admission of defying NYC laws by concealed carrying, and the karate chop the fucking cake line all combine to place this one into the Reason Hall of Fame.
In honor of NFL Draft Day, my first round draft pick in the Reason Editors draft is you.
Hear, hear!
I was just telling my wife, after reading this, that 2chilly is my new favorite Reason correspondent.
Well done JD.
Stossel has a sad.
"Moisten their knickers"
This is why I love you 2chili.
I remember when I first moved to AZ for college the first time I saw someone walking around with a gun strapped to their hip it was a little.. eyebrow raising(?) I suppose. I didn't feel the need to cower in fear or call the cops though. I guess it's the difference between realizing it's just an inaninimate object and being a complete moron. Also, logically the guy openly packing heat isn't really the one you have to worry about. If he was up to no good he'd be concealing it.
Devil's advocate: if you come from a state where open carry isn't legal/common, the only people openly carrying are cops.
Hence, discomfort and fear may be the effect of simple pavlovian conditioning.
Heh.
But why are they or would they be afraid of law enforcement? Personally I like concealed carry.
Hey, why are you dragging me into this?
I have been stopped by the police for open carrying. Basically got a throw away line about being a target. I think he was annoyed at having to respond to total nonsense.
Something to consider about open carry for those planning on going out to make a political statement:
Open carry of unloaded weapons used to be legal in California until not long ago. Then a bunch of gun rights folks went out trying to make a statement by getting together in public places openly wearing unloaded handguns. Naturally a bunch of people got upset at that. Newspapers picked up on it so the state legislature quickly banned the carry of even unloaded weapons.
Others then came up with the "We'll show them" strategy of carrying unloaded long guns- rifles and shotguns. That quickly was made illegal, too.
The take away, while it might bother some of you, is sometimes it's best to not advertise rights. That upsets people in some areas of the country and they'll try and take those rights away. It's often best to enjoy and take advantage of your rights privately.
What good is a right if you can't exercise it?
My advice...escape.
That would probably have been good advice for the people in CA. But I think it will vary quite a bit depending on where you are.
The best response to the final abridgment would have been to show up to the state house with loaded firearms, in force.
Progs keep pushing because nobody pushes back.
IIRC, when the Black Panther Party did exactly that, back in 1967, they panicked the legislature and Governor Reagan into passing the law which bannen open carry. (Incidentally, I was brought around to my guns-rights position a few years later by reading what the Panthers had to say about the RTKBA and its importance as a bulwark for the defense of freedom.)
Re: fredtyg,
We should show restraint and now publish things like "50 Shades Of Gray" lest we risk advertising our free speech right too much!
The take away, while it might bother some of you, is sometimes it's best to not advertise rights.
"Look, just do their goddam work for them, and save them some time."
And that bullshit in California is how the Constitutional challenge to California's permit laws got standing.
Where are you from Alice?
The moon, is my guess.
Well, you see due to the lack of oxygen on the moon, the combustion element of the firearm does not work. So it's like a safety utopia for her there.
"On the moon, the weekend has advanced beyond your wildest dreams. Weekends now take up the entire week, and jobs have been phased out accordingly."
Gunpowder contains an oxidizer so a gun would fire in space, just like a rocket engine.
You better hit your target with the first shot - the recoil will make you spin like a top.
Not so much of a problem on the Moon. Though the bullet could probably go into orbit and hit you in the back of the head (if you are a really good shot).
Were these armed men threatening them, or telling them to get into the freezer? No? Then the problem with "this America" isn't the guys with the guns, it's the people who think they have a right to not feel anxious.
I see it once a week in Maricopa County. So what ?
The hoplophobes should be afraid of open-carry. By acclimatizing people to guns in public and making them and their carriers completely normal, it will achieve final and total cultural victory for the forces of gun.
Pussies! Aargh!
I open carry up here in NH occasionally in the summer since I'm usually wearing a t-shirt and shorts. I've gotten some looks at the grocery store and places like that but I continue to not give a fuck.
Quite frankly, I prefer to carry concealed but sometimes it's not possible when you're wearing less clothing.
i just read that wisconsin is open carry, i'll have to give it a go sometime soon instead of just concealed carrying
In April 2009 the Milwaukee police chief said that, ""My message to my troops is if you see anybody carrying a gun on the streets of Milwaukee, we'll put them on the ground, take the gun away and then decide whether you have a right to carry it."
Wheeee! First commit the battery, then assess the situation. Got it.
So you might want to do a little research on the police policies in your area before you OC (and keep a camera rolling).
I call BS on this. When I lived in Texas--in AUSTIN, mind you--every single person I knew had a firearm, usually stashed in the glove box of their car.
So no true Texan would run and hide in a damn walk-in freezer at the sight of one, certainly not in Fort Worth.
I can believe it. Went on an open carry walk with some people through downtown Austin (camo Benelli shotgun -- awesome!), and the reaction was a mixture of approval, so what, and urbanites looking like they might piss their shorts.
Gonna guess parts of Fort Worth are similar in demographics.
Excellent. If it irritates people, it should become more common. Perhaps we can arrange for a gay couple to sloppy kiss while carrying matching 1911s?
Charles Nichols ? President of California Right To Carry
http://CaliforniaRightToCarry.org
"[A] right to carry arms openly: "This is the right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, and which is calculated to incite men to a manly and noble defence of themselves, if necessary, and of their country, without any tendency to secret advantages and unmanly assassinations."" District of Columbia v. Heller, 128 S. Ct. 2783 - Supreme Court (2008) at 2809.
"Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. From Blackstone through the 19th-century cases, commentators and courts routinely explained that the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. For example, the majority of the 19th-century courts to consider the question held that prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons were lawful under the Second Amendment or state analogues." District of Columbia v. Heller, 128 S. Ct. 2783 - Supreme Court (2008) at 2816.
Open Carry Texas President, CJ Grisham, spoke directly with the head of corporate security for Jack In The Box who spoke personally with the employees at the restaurant in Fort Worth. The TRUTH is that NOT A SINGLE EMPLOYEE of Jack In The Box hid in a freezer nor did a single employee call 911 or the police. The 911 call was made by a couple in the restaurant. We are working to get the 911 call, the police report, and other recordings to find out where this information originated and expose those reporting false information to achieve their anti-gun agendas. Defamation of an organization in this fashion is serious business and we will not allow it to happen unchallenged. Fort Worth Police Department needs to correct their false statements immediately that painted open carry advocates unfairly in the media.
Wisconsin was one of the latest states to adopt 'Concealed Carry'; however, 'Open Carry' had been legal for many years, yet all of a sudden after the 'Concealed Carry' laws were passed, signs popped up in businesses that 'weapons' could not be carried on premises; even though in the days of 'Open Carry' there was no such thing. So, in the days that only 'criminals' concealed their weapons, it was cool to carry weapons in these businesses, but now that citizens can lawfully carry 'concealed' weapons, they think criminals will obey a sign? The logic escapes me.
I want to mention what a great place I work at. There are approximately two dozen signs all around the perimeter of the two buildings, the two parking lots, and the campus as a whole saying "Notice: concealed carry permit holders on property" with a picture of a gun with a big green circle around it. So cool.
Wait, JD lives in Flagstaff? We need to go grab a beer at Hops on Birch sometime!
It's good to know there is at least one other libertarian in this town with me. Flagstaff is odd, you got your typical Boulder-ish college/mountain town hippies, you got your redneck cowboys, and a few normal folks.
My wife came from the Netherlands, so when she moved to Arizona with me she was understandably appalled the first time she saw a guy carry a gun, and we had to have a back and forth whether or not my pistol should be loaded in the house. Needless to say, I won that argument after taking her to the range!
I'm still amazed that Arizona is open-carry, I mean amazed in a positive way. People talk all kinds of shit about this state but we're one of the few where rights don't seem to be eroded as quickly as other states.
That is until the douchebags from California who are coming here in droves to escape their shitty economy get their way.
"That is until the douchebags from California who are coming here in droves to escape their shitty economy get their way."
Yeah, watched it happen in CO. Nothing will ruin a state quicker than an influx of Californians! But Denver is still the best city IN THE WORLD, and I can't wait to get back to it, which may happen pretty soon if Mrs. DenverJay don't knock off her BS.
Very funny look at gun rights. I'm imagining the cute ironic ways "theNew Yorker" might do cartoons of theses scenarios you mention.
Do you read your Kindle on bed, or in bed?
Nikki, being a woman, doesn't quite grasp the technology of ebooks. So on.
Both!
