A European Union report has recommended that the word "bankruptcy" be replaced with the phrase "debt adjustment." The Directorate General for International Policies says the word carries too much stigma and makes it difficult for people to rebuild their financial reputations.

    This just in: Vladimir Putin announced today that, following a successful operation in Ukraine, other Eastern European nations should prepare for border readjustment.

      Those that resist may face kinetic population adjustment.

        That's "Kinetic Population Refactoring" And "Adjustment" is something you do with an unmanned aireal diplomatic device.

    Among other proposals are suggestions that banks should be penalised if inappropriate lending contributes to someone's financial problems.

    For a minute i wondered what it would be like if borrowers were penalised if greed and stupidity contribute to their financial problems. What a big meanie I am.

      It's almost like the entire "First World" is being run by sleazy American personal injury lawyers.

      1. WTF   12 years ago

        Well, all three branches of government are made up mostly of sleazy lawyers, so I think you're pretty accurate even if you remove "almost".

      2. Swiss Servator, mehr K?se!   12 years ago

        "almost"?

    2. Logical 1   12 years ago

      They are actually, by foreclosures, liens, wage garnishments, etc. (and the obligatory lawyers fees that go along with all those, including bankruptcy)

  5. UnCivilServant   12 years ago

    The Directorate General for International Policies says the word carries too much stigma and makes it difficult for people to rebuild their financial reputations.

    And the problem is? If you're a wastrel who can't manage money, people should regard you as such and be wary of loaning you anything.

    1. WTF   12 years ago

      That was my thought - good, they should be stigmatized.

  6. WTF   12 years ago

    I thought they were already penalized by losing the money they lent when the debt gets discharged in bankruptcy.

    1. db   12 years ago

      But we can't let anyone get hurt. Except taxpayers and responsible people. Fuck those asshole chumps.

    2. Ted S.   12 years ago

      Some people are perceived as having big piles of money, and dammit, that's just not fair!

    This reminds me of the push to remove stigma from food stamps and welfare. Food stamps becomes "Calfresh" and "SNAP". Welfare becomes "transitional living" or "human services". We have a real problem calling a spade a spade in this country.

    "The Directorate General for International Policies says the word carries too much stigma and makes it difficult for people to rebuild their financial reputations."

    The status of being bankrupt or by any other name carries stigma. Changing what you call it is only a short term solution to the perceived problem as whatever will replace will have the same stigma attached to when the linguistic inertia is overcome.

  11. Bretzky   12 years ago

    That really explains in a nutshell the main economic difference between the US and Europe. In the US, bankruptcy isn't a bad word. In fact, if you're an entrepreneur, it's almost expected that you'll go bust once or twice before the age of 30 (unless you're a tech geek, of course).

  12. Robert   12 years ago

    death = health adjustment
    shit = food adjustment
    divorce = marriage adjustment
    replacement = adjustment adjustment
