Cop Fatally Shoots Teen Who Opened Door While Holding Wii Controller, Family Claims
Christopher Roupe of Euharlee, Ga. was 17

Last Friday, an unidentified female police officer in Euharlee, Ga. Fatally shot 17-year-old Christopher Roupe after officers showed up with a probation warrant for Roupe's father. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson alleged Roupe answered the door holding a handgun, while the family's attorney claims Roupe was holding a Wii controller and opened the door after the cops knocked but failed to identify themselves. The officer shot Roupe once in the chest, killing him. WSB-TV in Atlanta also relays witness accounts:
Neighbors said they ran to the home after they heard the shot.
"When we got up there, they said there was a Wii remote in his hand and she shot him," said Tia Howard, who lives a few doors down.
Neighbor Ken Yates said he saw the female officer moments after the fatal shot.
"This is tragic. She came out of this house. She put her head in her hands and she was sobbing. Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighborhood buddies," said Yates.
The female officer is unidentified, and there have been no charges. The GBI generally investigates police shootings in Georgia, but the spokesperson's seemingly definitive statement on what the teenager was holding before any investigation is complete and with contradicting witness accounts available in the press would appear to preclude the possibility that any investigation could be impartial. The GBI said an autopsy was completed Monday.

You want sympathy? Look in the dictionary, bitch. It's between shit and syphilis.
At least she feels remorse.
She might be salvageable.
As a human being, possibly. But she was no officer of the peace or law to begin with.
Perhaps she feels remorse for herself, not the kid.
Why would she react like that if the kid had an actual gun. Sounds like she realized she just murdered a little boy.
I'm sure she got over it pretty quick. I mean, she's got an entire department filled with people who will assure her that she did the right thing. She fell back onto her training. Sometimes things like this happen. It's not her fault. She simply did what she was trained to do. Besides, the kid had it coming anyway. I mean, his father was a criminal, so the kid was going to grow up to be a criminal. She probably saved some cop's life by killing the kid. Nothing to be sad about...
Of course she thought he was holding a handgun. Aren't all handguns rectangular and made of white molded plastic?
This is why 3-D printers must be banned. Guns could look like anything!
Maybe it was an assault (read: Scary Black) Wiimote.
Even if he was holding a gun when he opened the door she should still go to jail for murder.
Agreed.
BTW, my wife and a buddy both finally convinced me that I had to stop my Manning mourning and get out of my man cave and go back to work.
Hey, you're doing better than Sloopy, who hasn't been seen since the Orange Bowl.
You refer, of course, to Chelsea?
Didn't you try to claim that you weren't one of those people in love with him?
Seriously. Assuming they mistook the kid for his dad, it's still his property and the cops failed to identify themselves or issue orders.
What justification could there be when it's perfectly legal to have a gun drawn in your house?
Even if they *did* identify themselves, opening the door with a gun in your hand isn't a capital offense.
If that's all you do, worse they should be able to get you for is 'brandishing'.
Yeah, maybe if the gun was pointed at her shooting might have been justified, but simply holding a gun is a right any resident of the house has and that he might have been willing to kill a cop is just a risk a cop has to take unless there is a lot more than simply the presence of a gun to go on.
THIS! That was my first thought...how the fuck do you just shoot someone even just holding a gun in their own damn house! This bitch needs to rot seriously this is complete bullshit.
I wonder what the probation violations were?
"Alleged" probation violations at this point. There hasn't even been a revocation hearing.
Did she have the fucking gun up and ready, or did she quick-draw on him?
If she's so fucking remorseful, she should show it by eating the next bullet in that pistol.
I would like to hear the logistics of how this went down as well. She had to have knocked on the door with weapon out of its holster.
I once answered a door as a teenager to a bunch of cops, including one pointing his gun at me. They identified themselves as cops but I didn't believe them. I asked for a warrant and they said they didn't need one. Thank God I didn't grab the two-by-four we had handy by the door I guess.
I read stories like these and my paranoid-parent brain jumps to memories of myself and visions of my kids answering the door during dinner, steak knife in hand.
And possibly her eyes closed.
Cops take a step back, unhook and draw the weapon, and fire. It's what they are trained to do. It doesn't take any kind of fast draw to beat a kid with a Wii controller.
For that matter, it doesn't take a quick draw to beat a homeowner with a gun. You answer some jackboot pounding on your door, see it's a cop, finger off the trigger, point the gun down in a safe way at your side. The cop sees your gun, draws and shoots. Can you abase yourself, fling the gun away without making a fast movement, and grovel enough to appease the cop faster than he can draw and fire?
Probably not. And remember ... they all want cake.
She probably had her gun in her hand (along with the other officers) and was along the side of the door - out of sight of the peephole - for 'officer safety.
It appears SOP for warrants is to assume that the suspect is dangerously violent and will try to kill you to prevent apprehension - that's why the cops always do this shit at his home instead of taking him in public.
Of course, it helps that when you take a suspect down at home its inside a private area and there are no pesky 'witnesses' in position to see what actually happens - unlike in, say, a 7-11 parking lot.
Thank god no officers were hurt.
The thing that I see in all these shootings is that cops are scared. They are scared shitless when they see someone, anyone carrying anything that they can't not mistake for a gun. I'm sure it's probably a scary job at times but this has to stop, they cannot kill people indiscriminately because they're holding something in their hands.
Sorry to state the obvious.
You can thank the WAR ON COPS!!!!! crowd for that.
Of course they're scared. They've been told they're in a war, not there to protect and serve but to look at all citizens as potential terrorists. I'm sure lots of US military personnel in Iraq were scared too. That doesn't excuse the civilian murders.
I think that can be said about a very large percentage of the population. I'd love to see some data on it.
I contend as a population we are much bigger pussies than we were 30 years ago. I also contend it permeates everything. Not an hour goes by when we aren't told we need to be afraid of something.
I was arguing with someone the other day who claimed I owned a handgun because I was afraid. I told her I own a fire extinguisher too, but that doesn't mean I'm afraid of fire. It means I'm prudent and respect it, I don't fear it. She comes back with, "Everyone's afraid of fire. If they're not, they're insane."
When did it become alright to be a cowardly pussy?
yeah, and that is how we get BOSTON STRONG in which we all cowered in our houses.
yeah, and that is how we get BOSTON STRONG in which we all cowered in our houses.
If they were really strong they wouldn't need to have a slogan about how strong they are.
Pretty much what slogans are for - to lie.
For example: To Serve And Protect
About 1992.
Whenever I think of the pussification of the world I think of this video with Tucker Max. Although not known as a very cerebral guy, he really gets to an interesting hypothesis that we've basically lost the ability to do violence well, or at least without losing our heads. Could be the product of having a world safer than all of human history, but nevertheless we can't so much as have a shouting match with one another without completely losing ones shit to the degree that if a gun is present someone is likely going to die. Consequently he offers MMA as a tool or outlet to allow people to learn how to encounter violence while paradoxically keeping their cool. Good watch if you have ~20 min.
Also, why my 7 yr old does wrestling...

Nice speech. I only disagree with him about 8:30 when he starts talking about a trained cop vs. an untrained cop and a hormone cascade. I think this has nothing to do with it. I think it's strictly a fighting lifestyle/mindset. When you realize that throwing a punch might break your fist you tend to throw them less often. When you know that two people only stop fighting when someone is hurt, dead, or painfully and forcibly subdued, you tend to seek out other solutions well before the situation gets to that point. By the time the hormone cascade sets in the options have already been narrowed.
I think the same lack of awareness has come from the fact that people don't kill animals (for food or defense) anymore.
Well, cops are killing dogs in record numbers... maybe there's a method to their madness.
That's my wife's theory too. As the world gets more urbanized, people in the cities are rarely exposed to death anymore and never really come to grips with it.
On the farm you raise Miss Piggy from a suckling, nurture her, rub her belly, and when she gets big enough you put a gun to her head, shoot her, cut her up, put her in the freezer and eventually eat her. You deal with it, the realization being that everything dies, no sense worrying about it.
we can't so much as have a shouting match with one another without completely losing ones shit to the degree that if a gun is present someone is likely going to die
I think it is less that and more that so many people don't have experience with guns or people who own or use guns that they assume that that is what would happen if a gun were present. There are very few shouting matches that actually escalate to murder.
IMO, it goes hand in hand with the anti-theism in this country. When death alone is suddenly your worst fear, handguns, pointy sticks, and even neck ties start to seem scary.
I don't think that really works. We are in the midst of another Great Awakening in the US. It might not seem that way if you spend a lot of time with internet libertarians and mainstream press, but the US is a pretty religious country overall.
We are in the midst of another Great Awakening in the US... the US is a pretty religious country overall.
The US is getting less religious by the year according to every major poll.
If the bitch wants my sympathy she'll tell the truth, apologize to the family, and insist on being punished for her actions by being fired and criminally prosecuted.
A million dollar lawsuit against the police department would also be warranted. What the fuck is wrong with this country where you can't even open your door now without fear that a trigger happy moron in blue might shoot you for holding a piece of plastic.
The female officer is unidentified, and there have been no charges.
She feels bad enough, why do you ghouls want to invade her privacy?
Yes.
Nice passive voice in the linked article's headline.
They're not "police shootings," they're merely "officer-involved."
The police chief's statement: "It has been determined that the teen was holding what appeared to be a weapon."
So he conclusively determined that the kid was holding something that the officer thought was a weapon. How many state apologists would have read that as "Kid was holding a weapon?" But I'm sure that wasn't his intent, since he's a selfless hero public servant.
That's not passive voice. Though "officer involved shooting" is pretty weaselly.
This is what happens when you hand someone a gun, train them to open fire the moment they feel remotely threatened, and promise that there will never be any consequences for their actions.
Where's Tulpa to tell us how the kid had it coming?
Where's Tulpa to tell us how the kid had it coming?
You should always open the door while lying on the floor naked, with your hands raised. It could be the police.
"Indecent exposure", bang, bang, bang! *long pause* Bang!
Clearly we need common sense video game controller legislation to keep tragedies like this from happening! Video games took the life of another poor soul.
Clearly it was a violent video game that was avout the attack the officer through the controller.
When I answer the door with a remote control in my hand, It's the one that runs the Gatling guns.
Not the cauldrons of boiling oil?
Oil's a b*tch to clean up. Shell casings are easy.
Whoever authorized that the cops not identify themselves when executing the warrant needs to be investigated and police procedures in general need to be changed. "Following procedures" is only a defense if the procedures are good, and the evidence that police procedures are terrible grows every day.
If they identify themselves then the bad guys might flush drugs or arm themselves!
Officer safety!
The link is fucked up- points to a Reason admin page.
Yet another reason not to duck jury duty. You might get the case of the guy being prosecuted for unloading on a cop exceeding his authority. This shit will never be curtailed until the public - and we are part of the public - starts demanding accountability from our
"servants."
Like any of us would ever make it through selection.
fuck this shit. i'm done.
But, I bet, not before she made sure to put the kid in handcuffs and fail to attempt any type of medical aid.
But don't worry girl, the first one is always the hardest.
The multiple reports are consistent with each other if he had one of these wii controllers. The darker colors look like a real gun, with the exception of the BRIGHT ORANGE PARTS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT EXACTLY THIS KIND OF MISTAKE.

Mistake? The police don't make mistakes.

I just went to their police website; they have two female officers. I'm gonna take a stab and say it's the one whose picture has been removed.
http://euharleepolice.com/about.html
And just so the sensitive princesses of the criminal justice system don't freak out, I didn't mean stab literally.
Holy Crap! The doughnut thing holds true for these fat bastards.
Skip a fukin meal guys.
The union says they get 4 meal breaks a day and by God they're going to take them.
Here you go... Corporal Beth Gatny:
