Realistic statue of man in his underwear at Wellesley College sparks controversy
Hello.
Hey Look! It's Enrico Pallazzo!
Are you using my racial profile to bully me?
I'm quite willing to use the way you say 'out' to bully you also.
/Dials Bully-hot line.
I... must kill ... the Queen...
Mr. Firefly, a pleasure as always.
/tips hat. Whistles on.
...it has already become a source of undue stress for many Wellesley College students, the majority of whom live, study, and work in this space.
"I am woman hear me roar in numbers to big to ignore........"
The word "trigger" is a trigger for me. Stop using it.
Me too. Every time I do database work (which is everyday) I break down in tears thinking back to that time I saw a no guns sticker on an elementary school.
I, for one, am outraged.
College - Teaching young adults everywhere that even their most minor neuroses are to be encouraged and developed.
Because they didn't get enough of that in their entitled childhoods.
A good neurosis should be polished and cared for until it can blossom into a full blown psychosis.
You'd think the fact the scary dude wearing only tidy-whities is totally motionless while standing in snow would suggest that it isn't really a person if one stared at it for more than, oh, ten seconds or so.
Their protests suggest they ain't the sharpest pencils in the box.
"My date rapist, wearing only tidy-whities, demanded I remain totally motionless."
Did you ask him about his bleaching techniques?
Are you trying to say tighty whities? Well don't do it, cause it hurts my ears when you do it.
Semi related:
A while back, I was wondering what ever happened to Rick Moranis, and somebody referred me to this article.
Please, bitches, tighty-whiteys
It is a bit in the Uncanny Valley so I see how someone would be creeped out if they did not know it was there before encountering it.
Sure. You can be uncomfortable, even experience 'apprehension, fear, and triggering thoughts regarding sexual assault' for a few seconds.
Then you see that its a statue, laugh and move on. Well, normal people would.
The new IRS commissioner, meanwhile, told Congress he wants the investigation into the agency's targeting of conservative groups to be over so that it can move on.
"We can put the unfortunate incident behind us by no longer talking about it."
What difference, at this point, does it make?
How about, instead, we name a independent whatever we call them these days to dig into the scandal? It's clear this administration never will.
Elizabeth Hurley denied tabloid reports she had an affair with Bill Clinton in the 90s.
She SHOULD be denying My Favorite Martian.
Elizabeth Hurley denied tabloid reports she had an affair with Bill Clinton in the 90s.
I don't think that would cause Clinton's reputation to suffer. Probably the opposite, really.
Yeah, especially considering Bill's track record. It could redeem him!
Seriously. Somebody should put together a slide show, starting with her.
Paula Jones had a hideous face, but in person she actually had a pretty great ass. I'd put her above Monica or Hillary, but that's a pretty low bar.
She would indeed have been a great barfly pickup.
There's that chick from Highlander. The TV series, I mean. She admitted to it, I believe.
Hurley in her prime. The one woman my wife would give me a hall pass for.
Its easy to offer a hall-pass when you know you'll never need to.
I really want this to be true, but I have a really hard time believing Tom Sizemore about it. The supposed quotes with the "buck stops here" phrases awkwardly thrown in there smacks of something someone just made up on the spot.
Even if it is made up, we will get pictures of a young Elizabeth Hurley in the news cycle for a while, so I already take it as a win.
I suspect you are right. Dude seems like a pretty big liar.
Yeah, I came away with the same conclusion. The Clinton dialog he came up with rang false and just sounded stupid. One thing BC isn't is dumb enough to throw those phrases around Sizemore attributes to him.
Elizabeth Hurley denied tabloid reports she had an affair with Bill Clinton in the 90s.
Alright, now I'm fucking jealous.
If you keep it quiet I'm sure Bill can be cajoled into fucking you too!
I'm already a well-known blabbermouth. One rape report against Warty and they all turn against you.
Alright, now I'm fucking goofy.
Elizabeth Hurley denied tabloid reports she had an affair with Bill Clinton in the 90s
STFU!
Yep. It also involves Tom Sizemore.
CREEPY
So handy! I'm terrible with names.
Obviously, the end state here will to be to find any and all naked pics at the same time.
And then create a 3d model skin using those pictures which your glasses visually wrap around that person.
This would be great for public speaking.
I ID people by looking at them as well, how is this news?
Really? I have to sniff their asses first.
There's an app for that.
You look at a stranger and can easily ID their name/phone number?
You can ID people you don't know just by looking at them?
So it turns out Scruffy is a shinigami, good to know...
I instantly categorize them. Mostly they fall into the "asshole" slot. It's a gift.
I am pretty sure I can ID a person without Google glass.
"Oh shit google glass can help you do things easier that you could already do!!"
Outside of a job interview, the big red "criminal record" warning might be handy. At least people won't fuck with you.
Public schools in New York City will move forward on closingfor Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Lunar New Year, but Mayor De Blasio said he hadn't made a decision on Diwali yet.

And what will they do when someone erects a creepy statue of a man in his skivvies on their campus, hmm?
They'll be totally defenseless against his non-existent aggression.
I'm not getting it, Rufus. I'm consistently pro-2A. Are you perhaps thinking of another commenter?
Oh, it's because you posted a plaintext link. Meh. Sure the hyperlink tag is more elegant and offers more comedic possibilities, but it doesn't kill readibility like using quotation marks vice italics or blockquotes for big hunks of text.

Elizabeth Hurley Denies Affair With Bill Clitnon
Best. Typo. Ever.
Better than Notorious accidentally dropping an n-bomb earlier today?
(Mistyping "Bigger" is a bitch...)
Link?
http://reason.com/blog/2014/02.....nt_4290583
Thank you much. That is an awesomely unfortunate typo.
Cheers, and he made a pretty decent recovery.
He really did. Tonio repeating Beyong over and over again made me laugh more than the N bomb though.
I admit to a slight giggle at both.
Won't matter. His political career is now over, if not his regular career.
Just because I posted "beyong" a few times my whole life is over?
"Beyong" is not THE WORST WORD EVER.
That was KILLER
John's black slate theory wasn't bad either.
Turns out her birth parents were a couple of art students at a local university who put her up for adoption.
The black slate theory is pretty counter to observation in my experience.
I guess it depends what you think the value of art school is.
Let's move beyong this an put it behind us. We're nigger people than this.
Yeah, I'm voting for this one too. I'm just amazed it took 2 minutes for someone to comment on it.
Prediction: DeBlasio will not be re-elected. I have no idea who'll beat him, but it's pretty clear that he's a shallow moron.
it's pretty clear that he's a shallow moron.
That's kinda what got him elected in the first place. Keep in mind who he replaced.
Keep in mind who is voting.
A mayor of the people!
Eh, Bloomberg had repugnant values but he didn't strike me as dim...
His kid's 'fro got him elected. That's the talent pool deciding elections.
Obamacare subsidies create disincentives for work, the director of the CBO told Congress, backing a key argument made by Republicans against the law.
Now both sides of the aisle got the chance to shun the CBO where Obamacare is concerned!

Officials in a small Vermont town want to build more theaters and community centers to combat the town's heroin epidemic.
Maybe we can get special rural theater grants attached to the ACA since they're obviously a public health concern?
That's a great idea. People who go into theater and acting never use heroin. Wait.. Wha..
Those statistics are chilling! 9 heroin deaths in 2012 skyrocketed to 17 in 2013!
If these trends continue...*furiously punches numbers into calculator* within 15 years, there will be 300,000 people dying of heroin overdoses in Vermont EVERY YEAR.
We have to do something!
for the children! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!"
My God, they'll be clear-cutting the maple trees to plant poppies!
And then they show a chart of overdose deaths that went from 9 in '11 and '12 to '17. My god! Wait what is that it was 0 in '10? Maybe this is statistically meaningless?
Fools. They're just giving the junkies more warm places to shoot up.
Clearly we need to outlaw theater. Get those kids into wholesome art like macrame and cowboy poetry.
Never let a "crisis" go to waste.
A small, weekly ration of fentanyl patches would do better at combating heroin addiction.
I had that shit administered to me in the hospital a couple of times and, let me tell you, I felt no pain.
Incidentally, fentanyl patches are manufactured right in St. Albans. It's one of the towns only 3 large companies.
American snowboarder Shauwn White won't be competing in the slopestyle at the Olympics. He'd previously called the course "intimidating."
If that guy is worried about hurting himself, that's not a good sign.
Pretty weenie.

He's much better in the half pipe. Or so I've been told.
Nurse to Anorexic patient: Eat a sammich
Best Mad TV sketch in real life.
"I was in a lot of pain, physically and mentally. I was ready to start cutting myself and needed to speak to somebody ... and I needed to know that I was safe. I didn't feel safe," said Lamb.
She said a triage nurse at the Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville told her to go and get something to eat, and return to emergency if she didn't feel better.
Probably the best medical care one can get in the Obamacare age.
That nurse should be given a medal.
So it's insensitive to give people helpful medically-sound advice, because they might have a mental condition which makes them want to destroy themselves.
Public schools in New York City will move forward on closingfor Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Lunar New Year, but Mayor De Blasio said he hadn't made a decision on Diwali yet.
Just close them down year-round.
Strict separation of education and state. It's the only way to be sure.
Another 18 foot python was captured in Florida
Another 18-foot Burmese python has been captured in the Florida Everglades.
Bobby Hill, a python control agent for the South Florida Water Management District, bagged the giant snake Tuesday, the Miami Herald reports.
District spokesman Randy Smith said the python looked to be around 18 feet long and it would be sent to the University of Florida to be examined by biologists who are looking to stop the spread of the invasive species.
Last year, snake collector Jason Leon caught a 128-lb python that measured 18 feet, 8 inches long.
In the wild, the snakes are believed to reach up to 20 feet or more in length, and necropsies have shown that they have eaten nearly everything in the Everglades, ranging from birds to small mammals, according to the Miami Herald.
Snakes! Why'd it have to be snakes?!
I think this goes here. Of course, I'm sick for the first time in several years, so I may be hallucinating.
So if they've eaten everything in the Everglades what are they eating now to get to be that size?
Get used to it. Kids are germ factories.
Yeah, no shit.
Since the military made me get the swine flu vaccine in 1977 I had been immunne to just about any flu that came down the pike - until this week. My 5 year old keeps me updated with the newest and most popular diseases out there.
Did I ever tell you guys about my totally original idea involving pythons and a fast food chain in Florida?
I thought my pants seemed exceptionally loose today.
Oh, Burmese python.
When I lived in Singapore if we found a python in a ditch we'd just call a groundskeeper. They'd get the snake to coil around a bamboo pole and the whack it into the ground till it was dead. Maybe Floridians should try that.
A 20ft, 128 lb python might take exception to this.
Also something about getting someone else to 'whack your snake' with a stick sounds like a fetish.

Public schools in New York City will move forward on closing for Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and the Lunar New Year
If they closed them down permanently, would NYC residents even notice?
There's precedent, I taught in a NYC school for a while that took off holidays like Simchat Torah.
To be fair, Simchat Torah is really important.
(If you believe in that whole 'religion' and 'Judaism' thing which I personally have cast in the toilet and flushed away happily.)
Maybe this will placate Skynet: Electronic tongue gets a taste for beer
"When put to the test, the electronic tongue was able to distinguish between the main categories of beer being studied with a success rate of 81.9 percent. These categories included Schwarzbier, lager, double malt, Pilsen, Alsatian and low-alcohol. Although the categorization followed the declared alcohol content of the beers, Del Valle points out that the sensors don't respond directly to the presence of ethanol, but only the ions present in the solution."
And after the extensive beer tasting, the robot found the vacuum cleaner, the oscilloscope and a scientific calculator in the lab all a lot more attractive.
double malt, Pilsen,
Pilsen is a city, pilsner is a type of beer.

I'll take it over the original.
The new IRS commissioner, meanwhile, told Congress he wants the investigation into the agency's targeting of conservative groups to be over so that it can move on.
Let's put this fake scandal to bed. There are millions and millions of people out there cheating on their taxes!
I want the new IRS commissioner to go fuck himself!
the mayor said he hadn't taken a position on whether Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated in India and other South Asian countries, should be a day off from school.
Apparently hizzoner don't fear Shiva.
Shiva's modern-day followers don't tend to riot at the slightest provocation, real or imagined, nor do they then hijack jet planes and fly them into the city's skyline.
As they say, the wheel that beheads the other wheels in a fit of petulant rage gets the grease.
According to Shikha they rioted and massacred poor innocent Muslims who just waved "Hi" to a passing train of dirty violent Hindu pilgrims in Gujarat.
Someone still needs to apologize for the 1990s.
Worst. decade. ever.
I blame Seattle.
And now you're making it pay?
Not if today's Seahawks parade is any indication. Supposedly there are 700,000 people out for it, which is greater than the population of Seattle City proper. I don't tend to believe crowd estimates, though.
Good thing they won now and not back in the 90s. A grunge parade would suck.
No kidding.
You guys are just jealous you're too old to be Gen X. You're not Gen-Shit. You're just old.
Also, john spencer

Gilmore. Gen X is old.

...(runs away crying, 'Not old! not old! NEVER!!)
Seahawks this, Seahacks that.
I blame Seattle.
I was in Seattle for the 90s.
Best decade EVER!!!
I know. At least the 70s had movies and some decent music.
Really, Pro L? No good movies or music in the 90s? Every decade has good and bad examples of both.
Insert the word preponderance wherever you like.
The odd decades sucked.
Pssst! The 80s are standing right there and can totally hear you.
The 80s were ridiculous, but at least they were fun. The 90s were whiny and angsty and annoying. Kind of like your mom, but not as bad.
The 80s didn't take themselves seriously. Unlike the 90s.
Not taking oneself (decadeself?) seriously makes a huge difference.
I agree. I'm a child of the 80s. A science teacher back then told us we were leaving through boring times as compared to the 60s and 70s. Whatever it lacked in "excitement" was made up with fun.
I miss headbands, legwarmers, big hair and most of all...SPANDEX. Lots and lots of spandex.
Back then, everybody was ready for the weekend.
There are plenty of yoga pants around.
This. I was sick of angst by '92.
I beg to differ. The 90s may not have been great, but at least they delivered us from crap like shoulder pads, big hair, and The Human League.
Weren't the Human League a band from the 80s?
Yes, exactly. The 90s will forever be superior to the 80s for not spawning The Human League.
Bah. The 90's gave birth to EMF.
Holy shit I love EMF. I am going to asphyxiate you by teabagging. With my testicles. Handle your affairs, I'll be attenuating your existence starting in 90 minutes.
Shit, misread your comment. Apologies.
There was so much terrible music in the 80s. Horrible synths, screechy guitars...
Damn kids!
Get off my lawn!
I was THERE, Francisco! I heard that crap NEW! On the radio! So many good songs, then oops, gotta let the guitarist or the keyboard player have his solo ("I'm a virtuoso, dude!") and there it goes, right down the damn drain.
Good 80s music, I was listening to The Smithereens' "Blood and Roses" the other day. I think it's aged quite well.
The guitar solo was the best part.
Also, real MTV.
Words you could understand and sing along to.
I thought it was telling that Weird Al's parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was better in vocals and in instrument play.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the worst track on that album including both "Underneath the Bridge" and the hidden track "Endless, Nameless."
Hell, when even the cassette single B-Side ("Even in his Youth") is better than the band's most popular song, you know that we live on a fucked planet.
Seriously, the popularity of SLTS is inexplicable.
Yes, let's all sing along.
I saw you there, just standing there
And I thought I was only dreaming yeah
I kissed you then, then once again
You said you would come and dance with me
Dance with me across the sea
And we could feel the motion of a thousand dreams
Oh, Doctor, doctor, can't you see I'm burning, burning
Oh, Doctor, doctor, is this love I'm feeling?

Rush albums from the '80s kick ass.
And sent us into the open arms of the dirty flannel shirt and greasy hair. Such an improvement.
Jeremy's spoken.
baaaaaarrrrrrrrffffff
I'll just drop this here.
Awesome
I love it. For all those that don't know, that was the theme song to Hardcastle and McCormick. One of the best TV theme songs ever.
What, better than the one for Magnum P.I.?
Epi, is drunk on 'hawks blood.
Magnum hands down.
This topic and that comment gives me an idea. The Seahawks should change their somewhat generic sounding name to "A Man Called Hawk."
I like the theme song to Dallas
It's very well done. The intro and outro very nice touches.
Simon & Simon win the best theme contest.
What, better than the one for Magnum P.I.? What the fuck is wrong with you people?
Nothing's better than the theme song for Magnum PI. Even the A-Team acknowledges this.
Although, I grant you this, '80s = Best theme songs by MILES
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4JCehDOy54
You were doing so well until the end.
Interestingly, Magnum was in some sense a spin-off of Hawaii Five-O, which also had an awesome theme song.
Of course, all theme songs pale in comparison to this.
Quincy Jones wrote that.
actually, he did a LOT of awesome theme shit people may not be hip to =

If you peruse Reason back issues from the 90s you will find an interview with Scott Adams where he says the worst problem in the world is smoking.
It's hard to dislike a decade where people thought the world's worst problem was smoking.
Postrel, drink.
Don't mind if I do!
I lost a filling a couple of days ago and am getting nicely pain-free before my dental appointment tomorrow morning.
... "Cheers" Hobbit
It was the golden age of cinema. Especially 1997.
Is it because of Face/Off, Titanic, or Scream 2?
He's thinking of 1998. He's a little confused after getting firsted on both AM and PM links.
And video games. I mean, c'mon, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and The Ocarina of Time all came out in the same two-year period. What an amazing time to be an adolescent boy.
These all pale to Leisure Suit Larry and wonders of 8 bit animated nudity.
Also in 97: HOMM II, Fallout, Quake II, Age of Empires, Mario Kart, Starfox, Goldeneye and Grand Theft Auto among others.
What an amazing time to be an adolescent boy.
Dayz, minecraft, World of tanks, and League of Legends and better version of the games you named in the dozens but on your phone...
The 90s were good...but it was not because of the video games.
Also I always thought Final Fantasy and Zelda (at least past the first one) were girls games.
Remind me which decade gave us 9/11 and all that ensued.
Hint: it wasn't the 1990s.
Oh, sure, blame the Aughts, which had just gotten started, for 9/11. Uh-uh. Nineties all the way.
The line must be drawn here [between 12/31/99 and 1/1/00]! -- J-L Picard
See, you know you've lost when you have to resort to misquoting fictional people.
Where it's great to no longer be a kid: Nude adult party held at children's play center
"It was an adult pajama party that advertised tasteful nudity and warm Jell-O wrestling. Now parents are up in arms because it all took place in a children's play center. Inside the Krazy Kidz Play Center in Medford, Long Island, late Saturday night, adults in costumes romped inside a bouncy jungle gym. It included nude dancing and racier activities... The adult event was billed as a jungle gym and pajama party for grownups who won't grow up and declared there would be no orgy, smut, strippers or sexually lewd content."
As long as there were no children and the thing was cleaned by a crime scene cleanup crew afterwards, I'm okay with this.
But did they bring in a shaman to smudge the place afterwards? Or maybe a priest with some water drawn from the river Jordan and meditated over by Kabalah initiates?
cleaned by a crime scene cleanup crew afterwards
Its a kids daycare and kids are military grade germ vectors. Cumming the walls would probably improve the hygiene of the place.
An intriguing hypothesis.
I can't figure out the objections of the parent quoted (and I say that as a parent of a 4 year old who goes to those play places on occasion). Fear of second-hand nudity or something?
No one wants to buy Valtrex for their toddler.
No one wants to buy pay for Valtrex for their toddler.

Hey, nekked is nekked.
Go to google images, and search for "Berkeley naked parade".
Let me know what you think.
My initial thought is 'I'd do them.' Just to show how the wine I'm drinking has taken effect.
Has anyone told you that you're a hero yet? If not, I'd like to be the first.
No.
The fuckers here can't recognize a hero when they see one.
Not until we see the pictures.
A UN report on child abuse within the Catholic Church called on the Vatican to surrender to authorities anyone suspected of pedophilia as well as documents about any coverups. The Vatican characterized the report as distorted, unfair, and ideologically biased, pointing out that it criticized Church teachings on homosexuality, abortion, and contraceptives.
Considering that UN "Peacekeepers" have been raping and sexually abusing women and children and the UN has been covering it up, their calling out the Vatican is like Bill Clinton calling out Tiger Woods for infidelity.
Exactly.
For the first time, I feel compelled to defend my Church.
The UN can go fuck itself. Fuckers stack their ranks with fucking terrorists, rapists and criminals.
The Catholic Church, despite its issues, does more good than the UN.
If the Nazis were still around, running Germany, the Nazis would have chaired the Human Rights Commission by now.
You joke and perhaps scoff, but that's probably true. Sad, but true.
It's got to be, because reality makes no sense as currently constituted. We can all agree that this existence is highly implausible, right?
Oops, I thought this was a response to a later comment. I is confused.
To answer your comment, absolutely. If you're a UN member state, there is no judgment, unless you're the U.S. or Israel.
Yup.
Does anybody really need more than 7 holidays?
Fireman handcuffed by CHP officer at accident scene for refusing to move fire truck
Surprisingly, the comments are almost universally anti-cop.
Farmers are more loved then pretty much any small retail business owner.
People loving firemen more then cops is just one of those weird things people do.
Not weird at all. Firemen save you, on rare occasion. Cops give you tickets.
Women alone skew the sample. I know there are cop groupies, but I guarantee you upwards of 90% of straight women love them some fireman.
Guy I knows been on the job a year. He swears it's the best thing that's ever happened for his sex life.
Well, whatever respect the common American has for cops, he has a lot more for firemen. And that makes sense.
This is good: WOMEN EARN LESS THAN MEN! STOP DEBATING THIS!
The bottom line is: Women earn less than men any way you look at it and that gap is far from a choice or "subtle difference."
Women make up two-thirds of low-wage workers, but just 14.6 percent of the top earning positions at Fortune 500 companies, according to Catalyst, a research organization aimed at boosting women at work.
Here's how we got here:
High-paying, traditionally male-dominated fields, like engineering and computer science, tend to be hostile places for women. The lack of women in the tech industry and the rampant sexism in Silicon Valley is something that's been frequently agonized over.
The path away from those high-paying fields starts in school. Fewer women get into computer science and engineering because of patterns of sexism that begin in grade school. Just 0.3 percent of girls arrive at college intent on majoring in computer science, according to an op-ed in the Chronicle of Higher Education from experts in the science and engineering fields. That's because before girls even get to college, they're hit with messages from the media that working with computers is the exclusive purview of male geeks, that it's boring and it doesn't help society. Those stereotypes are particularly hard to counter when schools don't enlighten girls about the value of picking a career in a technical field...
Hmm. Lemme see: The hot girls in my engineering cohort were all offered multiple jobs that were better than anything all but one guy got. And that guy went to work for his uncle who happened to be a VP at one of the giant plant fabrication megacorps.
Fields that tend to be more attractive to women, like teaching, social work and other "caretaking" professions are typically lower paying -- in part because they're considered "women's work." Just consider the history of the secretary, which has been the top job for women since 1950.
The job was once largely male-dominated. Once companies realized they could pay women less to do the same thing it became a field mostly full of women, according to CNNMoney. As Hanna Rosin muses in an August Slate piece criticizing the 77 cents on the dollar stat, "Is it that women are choosing lower-paying professions or that our country values women's professions less?"
My sister makes good money as an executive assistant. This is bullshit.
Even when women have and make "the choice" to do everything exactly the same as men they still come out behind. Controlling for things like educational attainment, number of hours worked and occupation, women make about 5 percent less than their male colleagues, according to a 2011 analysis by the St. Louis Federal Reserve. That amounts to about $35 a week, $1,750 a year or $52,500 over a 30 year career for a full-time worker. As women continue on in their careers that gap gets even wider, a study of MBA students from the University of Chicago found.
So, to sum up: Women make less than men. As Obama said, "That is wrong, and in 2014, it's an embarrassment."
QED, because women should be free from making life choices I don't approve of.
Um doesn't that explain at least part of the small gap that remains? Women have been playing catch up and it will take those women moving up in their careers over time before it equals out.
It already equals out.
Women with children preform worse then Men for obvious reasons. Childless woman make as much as men or more.
With all those things being equal I'm not sure how a woman having children is relevant. Unless the hours worked isn't accurate obviously (i.e. it doesn't take into account work and professional improvement done outside of "work hours."
With all those things being equal I'm not sure how a woman having children is relevant
For one Men are more willing to skirt their parental responsibilities or offload them onto the mom then women are. Therefore they are at work doing work when the boss is thinking about giving people raises.
For another all the things you mentioned did not mention length of time with occupation. If men stay with same firm but women are dropping out to have babies then yes they are not going to earn as much as men.
Woman have a choice. Have children and earn less of don't and earn the same as men.
Note: I am sure there are women who can do both...but they are super women and the chances of you or anyone you know being a person like that is very slim.
So they are miscalculating hours worked now.
And they are miscalculating hours worked over a career.
I'm not disagreeing with you. I imagine that 5% gap could be mostly closed with improved metrics. I still think that the gap is higher farther into careers because women are still working their way up the ladder.
Just looking at my own career there are just as many young women lawyers as there are men. There are far fewer women partners because 30-40 years ago there were far fewer women entering.
Now over time I'm betting that there will be more women who choose family over work but if you can factor that into the adjustments accurately the gap should be 0.
If time worked (both short term and career long) is measured accurately the gap should be 0 regardless of whether they have children or not.
And its not that slim, I already know several.
So they are miscalculating hours worked now.
Number of hours are different then important hours.
Boss "I need you to work tonight for the case"
Working Mom "Can't I need to feed my kids"
Man "Oh I can do it. I will just come it late tomorrow"
And they are miscalculating hours worked over a career.
That was not measured. My guess is because the results do mesh up with the message.
What was measured is that childless women make as much as men.
"According to an opinion-editorial"
I hate to break it to anyone, but just because somebody writes an op-ed it doesn't mean it's true.
I see a lot of online ads for women making 80 bucks an hour on their computers in their spare time. One of them bought a used BMW.
"...they're hit with messages from the media that working with computers is the exclusive purview of male geeks, that it's boring and it doesn't help society."
Women are not going into STEM fields because the media portray such professions as lacking in prestige and importance?

Sheila Jackson Lee: Writing executive orders for Obama to sign 'our number one agenda'
"I believe this caucus will put us on the right path and we'll give President Obama a number of executive orders that he can sign with pride and strength."
See, all you nay sayers -- the President *can* work with Congress!
I can't tell if this is her wanting to be relevant without having to deal with congressional Republicans or if she actually thinks Obama is going to take their input.
She can get started on this:
"To honor Michael Jackson, Sheila Jackson Lee and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus are sponsoring House Resolution 600 which, she said, "claims Michael Jackson as an American legend and musical icon and an international humanitarian ? someone who will be honored forever and forever and forever and forever."
He touched so many young... lives.

How can people honestly be surprised by this? I'm just mad that this law basically a new pregressive tax that punished every step you take to get out of poverty. Fuck these people that think this helps. Fuck em with a splintery broomstick.
Nobody is actually surprised by it, including Democrats. It's just that they somehow see it as a good thing.
Now in Amsterdam: Red Light Secrets museum
"Organizer Melcher de Wind says the Red Light Secrets museum is for those who want to learn more about how the area works without actually visiting a prostitute. It's located in a former brothel, one of the narrow buildings typical of Amsterdam. Visitors enter the museum by passing a hologram of a beckoning prostitute. Then the displays attempt to place prostitutes as part of society. There's a short film showing the many people who work with them: those who clean or repair their rooms, do their laundry, or run over to their windows with coffee or food during shifts."

Meh. You can wake up in an alley missing your wallet without visiting Amsterdam.
At least the 70s had movies and some decent music.
And cocaine. And sex.
Lots and lots of sex.
I miss the seventies.
Yeah, back before anyone heard of AIDS. Good times...
Olongapo in the Philippines in 1979 was a young man's paradise. It's hard to even translate it into contemporary context.
That was the bad thing about the 80s - whores like Madonna aside - the style was to wear baggie clothes. Which meant girls hid the truth about their tits and asses. So gypped we were.
So gypped we were.
And it gave us Empire Strikes Back and everyone started talking like Yoda.
TV sucked and cars only went 5000 miles before they broke down in the middle of nowhere without a cell phone.
I guess this is one reason why I got through the 80's driving cars made in the 60's and early 70's - cars you could fix with the tools that would fit in a tool box.
The unknown Supreme Court decision that changed everything for gays
"ONE was the country's first openly gay magazine of ideas. It debuted in 1953 with serious articles on subjects like "homosexual marriage." (In 1953!) It did not publish explicitly sexual content or anything that approached the boundaries of pornography. Nonetheless, it soon came under the scrutiny of the U.S. Post Office (as it was then called), which first held up an issue in 1953 and then banned the October 1954 issue from the mail.
In those days, a Post Office ban amounted to totally shutting down the publication's distribution...I have a lot of difficulty explaining to anyone under 40 what life was like two generations ago for gay Americans. As of 1954, homosexuals not only lived in constant fear of being fired, shamed, and beaten or killed; we were also prevented by our government from making our case.
It was a surprise when the Supreme Court granted certiorari in the ONE case, the first dealing with homosexuality. The even bigger surprise was when, in January of 1958, without even hearing oral arguments, the Court issued a one-sentence per curiam ruling reversing the lower courts. And that was it. No explanation, no fuss. But that was the day anti-gay censorship died in America."

Now, Beauregard, as we learned earlier from Tulpa, when government forbids its various organs from doing something isn't "banning" but [undefined].
Where's the fun in that?

Kind of awkward when you're running from a crazed serial killer and your bra pops open.

More HuffPo histrionics about poverty
Poverty is worse in America than at any other time since the Depression. One in six Americans -- 16 percent or nearly 47 million -- lives at or below the government-defined poverty level. More children live in poverty in the U.S. than in any other developed country except Romania,...Child poverty increased 35 percent between 2007 and 2012. Nearly half of all American children will receive SNAP benefits before they are 20. By the age of 20 a full 90 percent of African-American children will have participated in the SNAP program.
The high standard of living relative to most countries actually shows how much better 'poverty' has gotten in the US. No one could really argue that the poor in, say, Greece, are better off than the poor in the US.
Poverty looks different in most of America today. The poor aren't dirty, their clothes aren't torn. Unless you're in a poverty-stricken neighborhood like mine, you don't know for sure that someone actually is poor. Because one of the tenets of poverty is to try not to look poor, try not to act poor.
But why? Why are those of us living in poverty trying to hide it? Shouldn't the shame of poverty fall on those with too much, not those with too little?
They aren't trying to hide it, it's just hard to tell because their wealth has increased along with the rest of the country's.
If you are a "Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and the first out lesbian to have a column in a daily newspaper" there is absolutely no reason you should be "poor". Either Ms. Brownworth is full of shit or she spends her entire Huffington Post paycheck on meth.
If it's hidden, how is it supposed to be photographed?
Lorena Hickok may not have shouted it in her every piece that she was a lesbian, but I don't think she even tried to hide it either.
Shouldn't the shame of poverty fall on those with too much, not those with too little?
Why would I be ashamed if someone else is poor?
Oh, right--because of some moral code I reject.

Cannibal invades Florida...again
The scene unfolded at about 8:30 p.m. on South Military Trail, north of Lake Ida Road and near The Colony at Delray Beach community. The man, who was not wearing any clothing, was walking north on Military Trail when, for reasons unknown, he assaulted a 66-year-old retired New York City police officer, Bradshaw said.
The retired officer was rushed to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries. The naked man, described as being about 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, then continued north on Military toward the entrance to the Colony where began chasing a man and the man's 10-year-old son. At some point, the man began fighting with an 18-year-old man and he started biting the 18-year-old on the face, Bradshaw said.
The 18-year-old attempted to defend himself with a box cutter knife. The teen sustained serious injuries during the fight and was taken to Delray Medical. Deputies arriving on the scene tried to calm the attacker, Bradshaw said. Deputies attempted to subdue the man with a Taser, but were unsuccessful.
At that point, a sheriff's sergeant fired three shots, one to the torso and two the lower part of the man's body. The man was rushed to Delray Medical Center where he died.

Janet Yellen's Marxist college classmate speaks
after Yale, Janet Yellen and I took different paths in our approaches and experiences working within US capitalism. Ever the liberal Democrat, she endorses capitalism despite its cyclical and colossal waste of resources and the human tragedy this imposes across the globe. No courses at Yale troubled Yellen or myself with any analyses of how exploitation lies at the core of capitalist production. We were never taught that the majority of industrial workers produce more value for employers than what employers pay them. We were prevented from encountering arguments examining how this idea of "more" (or, in economic terms, of a surplus) contributed fundamentally to the systemic inequalities that define capitalist societies.
No irritating Marxism was allowed to disturb our deep, or the unquestioned political tranquility that professors embedded in Yale's graduate economics curriculum. The celebration of the free competitive market, although often extended rhetorically to the free marketplace of competing ideas, was suspended in the case of Marxian concepts and analysis of capitalist economies. The latter was systematically excluded at Yale, as at most US universities then and ever since. No free marketplace of ideas there.
Weird, William F. Buckley painted a different picture.
Here's more:
Since 2007, the global economic meltdown has reminded everyone of capitalism's vulnerability to the kinds of economic catastrophes that marked the 1930s. Gradually before and quickly since 2007, interest in Marxian and other critiques of capitalism and in socialist as well as other alternative economic systems has been rekindled.
Because people are fucking retarded and like to dig up discredited ideas.
Yellen and I had the same economics education and have experienced the same global capitalist development since, yet we have responded very differently. The same systems generated contradictory outcomes. Capitalism's dysfunctions have led me to appreciate and independently learn what Marxian economics has to teach me, outside of Yale's mainstream economics. Yellen and her cohorts avoided and bypassed all that.
Again, you're pimping discredited ideas that prey on people's worst traits: envy, self-righteousness, and lust for power.
Convinced that we can do better than capitalism, many have analyzed the incipient alternatives emerging from capitalism's deficiencies, such as cooperatives, workers' self-directed enterprises and others. For us, Occupy Wall Street represents a powerful surge against capitalism, yet another sign of the waning tolerance for a system that Yellen will try to preserve.
If Occupy is powerful to you, then we luckily needn't worry. Pathetic man is pathetic.
Really, that has to be one of the more pathetic moments in the history of protests. In fact, I feel the need to put quotes around protests, thus: "protests."
Stand for nothing, do practically nothing, get a ridiculously huge amount of media coverage and still do and say virtually nothing. Oh, and accomplish nothing. I mean, no wonder Gandhi never won a Peace Prize with those kinds of high standards.
..."Capitalism's dysfunctions have led me to appreciate and independently learn what Marxian economics has to teach me, outside of Yale's mainstream economics. Yellen and her cohorts avoided and bypassed all that."
Yeah, I don't bother studying Gurdjieff, either.
Well, Marxism does have a substantially higher kill and starvation rate than capitalism, one must admit.
Is this person honestly saying that she believes Marxism has something to teach us?
It was economically backward at its inception, is full of Hegelian spiritual claptrap and is demonstrably unworkable. You would think radicals would hate Marx just for sucking all the air out of alternate non-capitalist worldviews.
Well you see, when Marxism sucked all the air out of alternate non-capitalist worldviews, these "radicals" all got brain damage.
I suppose that does explain a lot.
All the sophisticated syllogisms of the ponderous volumes published by Marx, Engels, and hundreds of Marxian authors cannot conceal the fact that the only and ultimate source of Marx's prophecy is an alleged inspiration by virtue of which Marx claims to have guessed the plans of the mysterious powers determining the course of history. Like Hegel, Marx was a prophet communicating to the people the revelation that an inner voice had imparted to him.
---Ludwig von Mises
Back when I had any real familiarity with Marx (he was somewhat hard to avoid in school when I was in college), it seemed that he did an okay job in criticizing some of the practices associated with capitalism in his time, but he did an entirely shitty job of predicting where things would go and an absolutely horrifying job of saying what we should do instead.
People like this are so fucking irritating. If she didn't like the courses at Yale, capitalism allowed her to switch to a school that suited her better, and that's exactly what she's complaining about. She wanted her (and especially her classmates') education to consist of indoctrination. Move to North Korea, cunt.
This isn't Yellen, this is her Yale classmate Richard Wolff who write for The Guardian.
Yellen isn't a Marxist as far as I know.
I knew it wasn't Yellen, but for some reason I thought the author was her roommate, not classmate.
And he's still a cunt.
Oh fuck this empty-headed bullshit. Nearly every recession of the 20th/21st century can be laid at the feet of the Central Banking Cartel (Federal Reserve), and their manipulation of interest rates in service to...you guessed it, banks. Not only did the TOP MEN who control our money and interest rates fail to stop the Great Depression, they actually caused it with nearly a decade of inflationary monetary policy.
This properly credentialled window-licker, at no point, offers his definition of capitalism. Just a few hundred of "Capitalism = Ooga Booga."
P.S. in 2014, I'm through clicking blind links in what are supposed to be persuasive writings. Learn how to use and abuse block quotes and citations like a normal person.

I'm gonna guess she has "feelings" about it which probably take the place of thinking about it for here.
"for her", not "for here".
Yeah, in just about any job I've had (excluding the military of course) I personally marked the point where I could say my employer had gotten a return above what I had been paid so far.
In my first job out of college, at about 6 months in, I was able to discover some very expensive spare parts, which had already been written off at another location, to refit some equipment which had gone off-line at our location. Simply through networking and paying attention I saved the company more than my first two years's salary.
That is how a company operates. That is how doing your job creates value.

If you think falling back on some nebulous "real world" observations is superior to the study needed to understand how human economic behavior works? You've swallowed the Myside Bias hook. If you're so eager to use "real world" excuses to justify the propaganda laced marginalization of human economic behaviors, you should be as willing to say our current adventures in bailing out failed banksters proves, beyond doubt in that "real world" you're on about, that the US is toast and representative democracy and capitalism just do not work outside of "some nonexistent fantasy world."
Put away your political propaganda tainted litmus test and actually make an attempt to study the economy that's in play. Politics and economics are not the same game. Too many citizens are ignorant of economics, so they fall back onto political propaganda. Such affected and willful ignorance is far worse for our democracy than Marxism could ever be.

Really? Really? You're paid less than the value that you create, because your labor value is not equal to the value that you create. There would be no money for overhead, nobody would invest in the company, and they would have zero cash reserves.

From the article (I can't watch the video at work):
The video features a student who has seemingly succumbed to porn binging, staring blankly at his laptop screen and leaving his door open.
Things soon take a turn for the weird (weirder?) when BYU President Kim B. Clark, who has been narrating the video, says, "The young man is spiritually wounded on the battlefield of the Great War."
Then the scene switches to a World War II-era battlefield in a deep forest. Our porn-addled young man is apparently wounded, sitting against a tree as bullets and explosions can be heard in the background.
A fellow "soldier" sees our struggling victim through his binoculars and races to save him. The scene then switches to back to the dorm room. Our soldier is really a concerned friend/roommate and directs our porn-binger to an on-campus counselor.
He's saving him from great peril!
I think that's a regular boner alert.
