Harry Reid OK With Medical Marijuana, Partially Because He Saw It Help Sick Child of Elected Official He Knows
Taking positions that are now easier

Harry Reid is having a change of heart on medical marijuana, telling the Las Vegas Sun it would've been easy for him to say no to medical marijuana a decade ago because it was a gateway drug, but that now he sees there are "some medical reasons for marijuana." His evolution was informed, he said, by stories he's heard of medical marijuana helping, on the news and in his life. Via the Sun:
There was one case in particular, about the only son of a Las Vegas elected official whom Reid did not specify by name, who had severe kidney failure, losing not just one, but two kidneys while a college student.
"He was so skinny and doing so poorly and somebody told him and his mom, you know, you should smoke some marijuana, because one of the side effects is … you get the munchies, you get extremely hungry," Reid said. "He tried it and sure enough, he was able to eat for the first time, he got hungry. So I thought, you know there might be some medical reasons for taking another look at this."
Reid wasn't ready to endorse Nevada legalizing marijuana like next-door Colorado did, saying he didn't know about that, but that he did know "we [the government] waste a lot of time and law enforcement going after these guys that are smoking marijuana," an increasingly popular and easy position to take in Washington, but one that's not yet translated to movement on the legalization of recreational marijuana.

The intolerable Harry Reid taking a better position for stupid reasons?
I'll still take it.
The saying "No matter what position you take, there's some @sshole somewhere who mostly agrees with it.' comes to mind with this bit of news.
Looks like this strain called Charlotte's Web could be a game-changer for kids with intractable seizures. Low in THC but high in CBD, which is the "couchlock" stuff you find in Indicas. Apparently in doses as high as those found in Charlotte's Web, this has the ability to stop seizures, and could allow many kids to live normal seizure-free lives.
Did you see the ReasonTV clip on this subject? Pretty amazing (ignore the Christie stuff, the medicine is fascinating).

It seems like the best strategy going forward is to tug at pol's heartstrings with libertarian tragedies. It worked on Rob Portman and Harry Reid.
How long until someone solicits another change of Harry's Heart with a tragic story of teenagers killed while high?
I'll admit it: I didn't think that one through.
What about a tragic story of a former DEA agent that lost everything when his job was eliminated?
He had to sell the skidoo.
I think the key here was the tragedy affected another member of the nobility. If this was the son of a plebeian, he wouldn't give a damn.
Nevada is next-door to Colorado? Did Utah get swallowed up in a dimensional doorway without me hearing about it?
What is Utah?
I'll take the Penis Mightier for $300.
I had some colleagues from Kansas who used to refer to Kentucky as an "East Coast State".
Geography is hard. Apparently.
I had a relative from Kentucky tell me, as we stood together in the Appalachians, "bet y'all don't have mountains like this out in Califernee!"
When I was arranging a few boxes I was shipping to be delivered to my new dorm room when I started college, the person on the phone told me that the rate was higher because "Texas is a West Coast state."
It's flyover country... Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming... who can tell them apart?
You know, one of those states with corners. Man do I hate those states.
I don't think Colorado is going to be a flyover state anymore.
Legal weed means a few million more voters that vote for free shit and hate guns. It's the sad truth.
I was giving Krayewski the benefit of the doubt and generously assuming where he's from "next-door" can mean on the same block.
One could hope.

Good on him. I'll take a sleazeball populist politician over a sleazeball authoritarian any day of the week.
Harry Reid with a shield of children he's borrowing against.
People like Reid are so consequentialist. They need a story, a little personal anecdote, a happy ending before they will change a position like this. It doesn't occur to them to do for reasons of principle.
There are very few things as dangerous as a politician who thinks he has principles. I'll take the consequentialism.
I don't think his face would be so squinched up if he'd had a happy ending.
So instead of being fully informed on a subject he took a stand on, he had to wait until a buddy of his was personally impacted by fucked up policy.
Reid is such a piece of shit.
I can't fathom why Nevada keeps electing him.
"Because one of the side effects is ? you get the munchies, you get extremely hungry"
That's only a side effect if it wasn't the main reason you used it. If the main reason you used it was to gain weight for medical reasons, then getting the munchies isn't a side effect. It's the main purpose.
The side effect, then, would be a sense of euphoria.
