Denver Airport Attempts to Fight Back Tide by Banning Marijuana Possession

Marijuana tourism in Colorado will see another complication before it kicks off Wednesday: Denver International Airport doesn't want to see any of your bud or weed or whatever you kids are calling it these days. From the Denver Post:
Denver International Airport will be the first city facility to prohibit marijuana possession on all of its property as it attempts to combat illegal interstate trafficking in the face of federal law.
Airport officials plan to begin enforcing the new policy, which is the furthest-reaching among the city's marijuana limitations, in early January.
Recently adopted city ordinances ban the display and transfer — but not mere possession — of marijuana on city-owned property including parks, the 16th Street Mall, streets and sidewalks near schools.
"We talked to all of (the federal agencies involved), and they've expressed concern for good reason, but it was our decision based on the way the airport operates," said Stacey Stegman, DIA spokeswoman. "We didn't want to impact other airports and other agencies, and we didn't want to facilitate transporting marijuana across state lines."
But apparently tokers shouldn't worry too much:
And while the airport has decided to implement a zero-tolerance marijuana policy, it doesn't plan to actively enforce the policy.
"It's not like we are going to do checkpoints. We just want people to comply," Stegman said, noting that a violator would have to be discovered by other means, such as committing a different crime and having pot found in the perpetrator's possession.
Well, then! But an important reminder: The airport's rules have absolutely no bearing on what the Transportation Security Agency does if their agents discover you with marijuana.

In that case, you will be detained and handed over to the DEA. The TSA agent will then officially record that he apprehended a drug smuggler. And as for yourself, you'll be lucky if the DEA doesn't forget they are holding you.
The (supposed) word here in Washington is that the TSA won't care about weed because they can't arrest you for it (they do not have arrest powers) and if they call the Sea-Tac or state police, they're not going to do shit either because they can't arrest you because weed is legal. I almost took some with me to Connecticut earlier this year but decided against it just in case, especially since I can immediately get some as soon as I get there. But really, if you wrapped it up good and checked your bag, even if they somehow found it, what are they going to do? And no one checks bags at the destination, so it would probably be fine.
Huh. Another question about political policy turns into a story about what a badass Episiarch is. Odd how that seems to happen every single time.
I can no more help being a fatass than you can, Hugh. Also, there was this one time I saved 12 kittens from a fire. While high. That was pretty badass.
....sniff....just the twelve kittens then....
To be fair, it was a fire you started.
You really shouldn't mix weed, wax play with lit candles, and cotton ropes. No matter what SugarFree says about how uncomfortable nylon rope is.
Oh sure, blame the auto-asphyxiating pyromaniac drug user in me. I can't help it!!!
I'd imagine if they found it in WA, they'd call ahead and someone would check your bag when you landed. Just guessing, though.
And if they haven't started that yet, I bet they will.
That's basically the exact reason I decided against it. I didn't need to get detained at Bradley International because someone phoned ahead.
I could definitely envision some TSA beurogoon doing that.
Do you have any idea how many planes were brought down by a doob?
At least a million right?
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
Yay! It's LEGAL!
So is tobacco and alcohol.
Note to self: Use less-subtle sarcasm.
What if there was legal weed in your state but practically no one gave a damn?
It's not like we are going to do checkpoints.
Well, there's a lie. Drug dogs will be roaming the terminal, giving permission for anal fingerblasting by fat, sweaty cops. Mark my words.
MJ tourism? Is there somewhere in the US where MJ users cant get the stuff as easily as acquiring groceries? People are going to flock to Co to toke up? What a crock. This is a pretense for ramping up....well, what RC said.
Sometimes man, you jsut have to roll with ti.

It will be interesting to see how long the TSA can detain someone when some guy in a Podunk little local airport gets popped and they call in a federal cop and have to wait a day or two for him to show up.
The TSAs official policy is to turn cases of petty possession over to the locals. In Oakland people aren't even delayed anymore and they don't even steal your cannabis. No, they don't call and snitch either.
The Feds simply don't have the resources to enforce their petty possession law. If they were to call the Oakland Police the person answering the phone would ask what the heck the TSA wanted them to do about it.
It doesn't work so well on the return trip:

On the other hand who the heck would guess that the police in Indiana were acquainted with compassion in any measure?

I recommend the pro pot groups hand out small bags to m'jane to all flyers and urge them to swamp the TSA with obvious possession targets. It'll be huge fun.
Of course who could forget the nationwide brouhaha about the TSA in Denver treating cannabis identically to sex toys found in a passenger's luggage? Oh, at least everyone else who's posted in this comments column.
