Central Connecticut State University Locked Down After Campus Shooter "Scare" That Could've Been a Halloween Costume; Campus Police Chief Says There Was No Real Threat to Anyone, Charges Likely
A Halloween costume likely sparked the incident

Central Connecticut State University declared a state of emergency and ordered a campus lockdown after reports of a possibly costumed armed man on campus also carrying what looked like a sword. "Somebody was seen either with a gun or was thought to have a gun," a university spokesperson told the press. The lockdown ended after police took three people, including at least one student, the primary suspect, into custody. They recovered no weapons, and the Hartford Courant reports that the campus police chief said there was never a threat to anyone. Nevertheless, even while acknowledging the incident "possibly could have been a Halloween costume," the campus police chief insisted it "wasn't a prank because there was concern, there was alarm."

The Courant has a photo gallery illustrating the overwhelming police response, which included cops from several local towns and state police sending two SWAT teams to the school. The first photo, of a couple embracing, is captioned "A man hugs his girlfriend as they reunite on Manafort Street as students and faculty were finally released Monday afternoon," a caption worth a thousand words.
Police say charges are likely in the incident, according to the Courant's David Owens.

So what are the charges for not being a threat to anybody? Incitement to giggle?
In New York, satirical "Gmail confession" pranks perpetrated against well-connected academic department chairmen are punishable as identity theft, harassment, forgery, "unauthorized access to a computer" (for violating NYU library code of conduct), and "criminal impersonation." The leading case, in which all of these charges were brought, is documented at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
The case is still awaiting appellate review from New York's highest court in Albany, but it seems pretty clear that there's a consensus in the legal and academic community that the charges were perfectly appropriate. We obviously can't have "pranks" and "satire" disrupting ordered liberty on our campuses.
P.s. I meant legal and academic "communities," in the plural.
Charges?
'Ugly Costume'? 'Bad Acting'?
Racist.
So, will the cops be charged for creating a panic?
No, but a student may be charged with having a picnic.
the campus police chief insisted it "wasn't a prank because there was concern"
So *that's* why TSA gropings aren't pranks!
In order to save everyone from a non-existent threat, they imprisoned them for a while. Sounds like a genius plan.

Somebody had a gun that looked like a sword!
Update: Someone had a sword that looked like a gun!
Update: Someone had a screwdriver and it looked like a caulking gun!
Update: Suspect apprehended carrying cell phone that could have been a gun, well... it did look like a sword, that then changed into a gun and back into... a cell phone! Threat averted, peace restored, charges filed. Nothing more to see here, move along...
I'll just leave this here.
That is fucking great! I mean, that would make every nanny in Murika pee their pants in unison!
Interesting what can happen in just a few decades, isn't it?
And sad.
Mostly sad.
I hasn't happened everywhere, not yet at least.
Classic youtube comments.
None of those kids are infants or toddlers. She fails "basic math".
So how the cops perceive and react to a situation determines the crime.
Just like racism and bullying.
OT:
Wired comes out in favor of soda bans.
I remember reading wired in print (90s) as a teenager and it seemed a bit subversive, but now it's just another piece of shite rag for the state.
Am I wrong in my memory, or has it always been like this?
Well, since most of the 60s hipsters somehow morphed into full on statists, it's no surprise that one of their rags morphed along in step.
The hippies were always sort of collectivists, I mean I do remember them talking about communes and things like that. It's just that in those days, their progressive indoctrination was not complete and they still naively believed that individual rights were important and that 'the man' was actually the government and not evil corporations and Republicans.
Now that their education is complete, it's time for the mask to be cast aside, so that they can fulfill their great destiny of collectivist utopia.
The hippies needed government coercion to enforce the Civil Rights Act and equal rights for women.
When I was a kid in early 70s Georgia the most pro-government people were the conservative George Wallace type racists and pro-Nixon Law & Order types. But the government turned on them and enforced school segregation, passed Roe v. Wade, and outlawed school prayer. That is when the redneck movement joined Reagan and the GOP and hippies became their sworn enemy as government morphed into a secular color-blind devil to them.
Politics is all about rednecks and race in the South.
Yet, at that time in history, some of the most vicious anti-school integration riots were in Boston.
Very true, buy somehow MA escaped the Solid South Law & Order strategy of Reagan/Nixon.
Probably due to strong unions and secular Catholicism in MA.
somehow MA escaped the Solid South

Your lies are so obvious.
Yes, add affirmative action to the list of reasons that made the rednecks hate government.
"Color blind" is a nice way of saying "quotas", dipshit.

What in the world does hating government have to do with racism?

Slimy turd has problems with the branches of government, among other things.

God, you're stupid.
Wasn't Wired the main outlet for the Bradley Manning story?
Congratulations, America. You're a pussy.
Well, to be fair, this asshole was probably brandishing a pop tart, fashioned into an assault? pistol. The American people are frightened, and on edge. Dogs have been shot for less, they should be thankful that charges are their only concern, and no officers were hurt. Although, a gunshot wound to the thigh or stomach would taught a valuable lesson about the consequences of such reckless behavior...
Watch out! It might be hot out of the toaster!
This story is nothing compared to the ghetto bitches mass attack on a restaurant full of people with a vat of high capacity assault alfredo.
Reading that story and seeing the photos almost made me into a eugenics supporter.
I suspect that bail is more important than child support about now...

Then you need to drink more. Works for me.
Not to mention that if you're deployed in a military situation, there just might be, likely will be, other people with guns who are more than willing to shoot back, or first.
The cops rarely face a situation like that, mostly unarmed civilians, with frail old ladies, retarded kids, and puppies being their favored confrontations.
If you sent most of these cops out onto a really battlefield, they would piss themselves and run away.
In the book version of "Blackhawk Down", the author points out that the Army Rangers really wanted to employ their skills on missions. Like a sports team, they'd practiced and practiced, and were itching to get into the game.
I could see SWAT teams experiencing the same. They get cool-o tactical training, cool-o weapons and gear, the respect of their Brothers in Blue... they're probably jumping at any chance to deploy. If they get to shoot a dog in the process, well, that's just gravy.
So the standard response now is to forbid innocent people the right to freely move about the nation? I guess we fucking did learn something from Boston after all.
FUCK!
New York Times writer discovers Republicans are normal people.
Republican makes accurate argument, liberal decides to dodge the discussion.
This is unbelievably unsurprising.
What a condescending vile little twerp. He might want to be friends with Republicans, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to be friends with him.
Why are you shilling for Republicans again? I thought you had outgrown that.
Shrike just called the kettle black.
LOL
Blocking Shrike was the best decision I ever made. I assume whatever is above me is unbelievably stupid and would not be worth responding to.
Shrike thought you outgrew being a partisan shill.
LOL
I give Shrike some credit though, calling the kettle black makes more sense than running around in circles trying to defend ObamaCare.
Shrike can call me a partisan shill when I start defending George W. Bush the way he defends Obama.
Exactly.
Shrike's the biggest partisan shill here, maybe, 'cept Tony.
Why don't we have any hardcore Republican shills? People call John Red Tony, but that's not really fair. There are plenty of times John diverges from the Republicans. He's just much closer to them than most people here.
There has been a few times that Free Republic has linked to a Reason post and a bunch of Republican crazies came swarming over, but they normally disappear after that post.
"People call John Red Tony, but that's not really fair. There are plenty of times John diverges from the Republicans. "
That is true for most Rs. That is why that party is salvagable...barely and the Ds are lost. The vast majority have some intellectual honesty. I am sure there are some, but I have never met a republican as fanatic as the average D seems to be.
I cant imagine a cult of personality developing in the republican party, yet one on par with the Jim Jones bunch has grown out of the democrats.
I cant imagine a cult of personality developing in the republican party
See: Ronald Reagan.
True, but it didn't exist when he was president. It really didn't exist to any great degree when he was still alive. The Reagan cult began after he died and reached fever pitch in the '08 election when candidates were falling over themselves trying to argue they were his second coming. And there aren't that many on the "right," or even among Republicans, that buy into it. The sheer degree of Obama reverence, totemization of his personage, and memorabilia connected to the man pails in comparison to any American politician, except maybe Washington.
My mother is the most die-hard Republican I've met, she was a fundraiser and campaigner for Reagan's primary challenge when she was a college student ('76 was her first vote) and she campaigned and raised money for him in '80 and '84. All she has of him is a signed photo of the two of them together and a T-shirt of his smiling mug with the caption "The Gipper." She really loved the guy, but she doesn't blatantly misstate his policy positions or lie about what he accomplished. She sure as shit doesn't see him as an ubermensch sent to save us from ourselves.
The "Reagan Legacy" may very well rise to level the Kennedy Camelot cult has in the Democratic Party, but it isn't even remotely close to the kind of religious, mindless worship that is Obamanism.
Why don't we have any hardcore Republican shills?
We used to have more when there was a Republican in the White House.
For the shills, it's all about who's in the White House. Since there's a Democrat in the White House right now, and we're against him, then we're not really the enemy at the moment.
If there were a Republican in the White House and we weren't being appropriately deferential to his Republican ass, we'd be the enemy, and we'd see a lot more Republican shills.
Except I keep saying how much I like gridlock so the government can't do as much damage as in 2001-06 and 2008-09.
I 'D' POTUS/Senate and GOP House are just about as good as we can expect.
See 1993-1999 also.

But on the other hand, we're friends, even though you don't share my view that all Canadians should be put into camps, tortured to death, their organs harvested, and their flesh turned into fertilizer. See, we can rise above partisan divisions.
Canadian flesh makes lousy fertilizer you dolt.
I didn't say good fertilizer, you retard. I'm just saying we need to do something with these Canadian scum that are polluting our continent.
Say, now that I think of it, your comment sounded almost...Canadian.
One of my close friends emigrated to Canuckistan from the US. What a shame.
Shut up or I'll make you watch the Health Canada film on Canadian puberty again.
Health Canada film on Canadian puberty
the horror, the horror

Imagining Warty like the guy in Brainstorm twitching from the looped orgasm scene.
Now you're just making stuff up. Everyone knows Canadians never go through puberty.
What a piece of human fucking garbage.
That cunt thinks that a gun to the head is compassion and a jackboot to the face is empathy. Fuck him.
They shouldn't have been discussing the Zimmerman case at all, since "Jeff" had just gotten a jury summons and might have served on the jury in that case. Unless you're trying to contaminate yourself to guarantee you won't serve, best to keep an open mind on a case where you could be a juror.
I've had some proggie co-workers that I could talk to, drink a beer with, who were pleasant to be around in casual situations. But in no way, or at any time could you approach the subject of politics with them. They get very defensive and nervous and just refuse to engage. I learned that there is no point in trying.
I also have conservative co-workers who will make the most ridiculous arguments about some things, but they don't freak out and refuse to discuss the issues with you, like the progs do.
With progressive friends, sometimes I argue and sometimes I listen and interject an occasional joke. From these good folks, I learn:
(a) It's shocking that a jury would acquit that gun-owner who stalked that black kid and killed him.
(b) Voter IDs are racist.
(c) People shouldn't own guns because of the times my wife got mad at me and could have shot me if we had a gun.
(d) Rand Paul is a warmonger because all Republicans are warmongers, and his call for reducing drug sentences doesn't matter because talk is cheap (I tried to bait him with the "Rand is only a junior Senator" remark, but didn't get any bites)
Oh, and complaining about drone strikes and the like is just a preoccupation of lawyers (and eye doctors, I added)
So, what you are saying, is that they are very uninformed and get what little information they have from their proggie friends, or on Facebook.
They'll be solid voters for the dems for decades to come, if they can get them to the polls.
The thing is, they're smart and are regular news consumers. They just derive different conclusions from the news they get. And they're selective in the news they consume, just like me, I imagine.
I have proggie friends (and a few family members). One of them (a family member) indicated that my political beliefs were terrifying. I thought that was cute. I generally know why they hold progressive beliefs and I know I'm not going to have any luck in dissuading them. They link to progressive articles and say they don't agree with everything in them, but that it's interesting, and when I point out the underlying premise is provably false they freak out and say they are done with that conversation.
Now I just ignore political emails and IMs from them and talk with them about things that aren't politically charged. It makes life easier and keeps my blood pressure in a healthier range.
He's not a cruel person, just someone who's been taught cruel rhetoric.
Utterly shocking that this guy has trouble making friends. He sounds like a fucking peach.
Best quote:
"I yearn to live in an echo chamber, free from competing ideas. You know, like all true intellectuals do."
All conservative or libertarian ideas are informed by Fox News. All of them.
It must be so easy living as a liberal shill in the liberal intelligentsia, occasionally slumming it among the benighted conservative underclass to dredge for essay topics and demonstrate one's affinity for all classes.
All conservative or libertarian ideas are informed by Fox News. All of them.
Well, it only makes sense when you think about it.
Collectivists tend to be deep thinkers who ponder the most minute of details and analyze them to come to their own conclusion, regardless of what the general opinion of society at large may be.
While individualists, on the other hand, tend to be lazy about doing their own research and are prone to relying on group think for their ideas.
Yep, that makes perfect sense.
It's projection and shock that someone dares have the audacity to voice opinions counter to the predominantly left-of-center echo-chamber.
Not that I care much for Fox News, aside from Red Eye.
The most popular shows on Fox News pull in about 3.5 million viewers. Approximately one-third of voters are registered Republicans, which is about 50 million people.
Where do the other 46.5 million get their opinions if they aren't watching Fox?
Stormfront, obvs.
The KKK ice-cream socials.
Tip: Don't ask for chocolate.
Friendship: ur doin it rong.
These people have no clue they sound like sociopaths, do they? What kind of person has friendship quotas like that? "Oh, you only have a Master's degree? I'm really looking to move into more 'super-educated' friends right now."
It is also telling that he thinks being able to dissect fox news rhetoric makes one an intellectual. Holy shit.

Some of my family members are Republicans. The major issue for them is money. They want to pay as few taxes as possible and have as few restrictions as possible when it comes making a buck.
If you try to talk to them about the morality of something like privatizing a water supply, the response is "i don't do morality.' This tends to make me nuts, so I avoid those discussions.
That being said, every one of them is a social liberal, and kind and caring about family members or friends in need, including providing financial support.
But they also have friends who are more extreme Republicans, of the "global warming is a hoax" variety. Or why teachers shouldn't get pensions.
So we have friendly conversations that avoid some significant areas of disagreement, and holidays proceed fairy peacefully.
His family sounds libertarian.
Siobhan, honey, the definition of "social liberal" isn't "[being] kind and caring about family members or friends in need, including providing financial support."
Hope that helps.
OH NOES! They might still be socially conservative? They're just good, charitable people...
*The shame being too intense, Siobhan shatters her lady-Bic razor on the edge of the sink, picks up a shard of blade and prepares to end it all*
All the while the voice from the mirror whispers.... "do it.....do it..."
"But they also have friends who are more extreme Republicans, of the "global warming is a hoax" variety."
Observing that there has been no temp rise for over 15 years and that every single one of the alarmists predictions have failed to come true and that their solution to every crisis is the same authoritarian political fix makes one extreme. Good to know.
Umm, His Goreness has made lots of money talking about Global Warming Climate Change Climate Wierding, so it must be real. And Bill Nye agrees with me, too.

A practical, even thoughtful approach when dealing with some republicans. They can be cute and charming, but like dogs you don't know, approach with caution because they may bite.
"I had friends, plenty of friends. If I wanted more, they would be liberal, super-educated friends who could do rhetorical back flips over the Fox News."
A condescending and honest reflection of my own feelings. But, I think the author misses the point. It is easy to enjoy the company & intellect of republicans. Tea party types are a whole different animal, they deride education, deny facts, science, economics and any expert whose views diverge from the slogan they last heard on Fox news.
The author's friend may take care of his sister, what about mine? Who should aid his sister if he is unable? And, let's not even start with the hypocrisy of wanting their freedom back. Freedom to tell me who I can marry, freedom to stick a probe in my wife if she is pregnant, freedom to walk around the mall with a holstered gun?
Republicans have rational and intelligent discourse about ways to achieve solutions to problems. I enjoy talking to them, might even be one. Not the tea people. Their leaders would destroy the institutions they have sworn to serve, except for their own fat paychecks and benefits.
Stop being selfish and pay for my free shit. I also demand you do nothing that makes me feel uncomfortable!
Hmmm... where to start with.. all that.

So, uh, do he and his daughters make it a habit to jump on people and beat their heads into pavement? Because if they are not in the habit of committing potentially deadly felonious assaults on random strangers they should be pretty safe from being shot.
And if they are, then fuck 'em, I hope he and his daughters die in a fire.
No Jail Time For Babysitter Accused Of Having Sex With 14-Year-Old Boys
Bouchard was 19 when she began a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy she was hired to baby-sit, according to arrest warrants
Why the hell does a 14-year-old boy need to be baby-sat?
Because his dad wanted him to get laid?
As per Dan Greenberg?
Apparently because they put out.
Why the hell does a 14-year-old boy need to be baby-sat?
I bet if you ask the 14 year old boy, he'll now be in favor of mandatory babysitting for boys up until, well, forever.
I know, right?
Judge David P. Gold, noting that the office of probation and the family of one of the victims supported a no-jail sentence, said justice could be served with a fully suspended sentence.
"I am impressed by what appears to me a greater level of maturity by Ms. Bouchard," he said.
Bouchard is barred from having contact with boys under 16 and cannot be in touch with either of the victims.
"I'm really sorry to the victim and their families," Bouchard said. "This will never happen again."
No double standard. Nope, none. We all know a 19 year old male would get the same treatment if he demonstrated maturity to the judge and apologized.
"I am impressed by what appears to me a greater level of maturity by Ms. Bouchard," he said.
"Whoo-eeee! I mean, that girl is *mature*!"
["Whoo-eeee! I mean, that girl is *mature*!"]
That was a reference to the size of her tits you moron. Reading comprehension, how does it work?
Certain voices in the MRM would tell me such stories shouldn't be shrugged off, and certainly, if the genders were reversed, the court would string up this sexual predator without a moment's hesitation. However, while the pendulum has swung too far in terms of making life hell for supposed sex offenders, ratcheting it back with outcry over double standards isn't a road to reform. If anything, these cases should be pointed to as a reasoned, measured response to questionable choices.
Either this father (assuming he had anything to do with this babysitter arrangement) was socially blind as a bat or he was outsourcing a live demonstration in lieu of the advanced birds-n-bees talk.
"Central Connecticut State University Locked Down After Campus Shooter "Scare" That Could've Been a Halloween Costume; Campus Police Chief Says There Was No Real Threat to Anyone"
We should probably ban assault weapons anyway just to be safe.
Serious question: How long until masks are banned?
I think they are in most places unless they are for a holiday like Halloween. I don't think you are allowed to "conceal your identity" and walk around with a mask on unless you claim you're making political speech. And if you're doing that, you have to produce identification to a police officer that asks for it in California.
I used fewer words.
Which makes me smarter than you since I managed to get out a long-winded comment a minute faster than your monosyllabic, almost grunting, statement. 😛
You posted your comment right away, while I speed-read War and Peace first.
unless you claim you're making political speech.
Or religious speech, if you catch my drift.
Another serious question: Do burqa-wearers get challenged in CA?
Not sure, but I bet they outlaw them soon.
"She also had very heavy eye make-up."
Of course.
"I think they are in most places unless they are for a holiday like Halloween."
What? I think you made that up.
In many states they are. Though there is generally an exception for holidays involving masks - you know, like Halloween.
Connecticut already has. Didn't you read about that crazy guy in Newtown that tried to buy an AR-15 but couldn't?
Nicholas Federici, a student and former police officer, said he saw a man with a sword and a handgun walking toward James Hall. The man was wearing green Army fatigues, black knee pads and some kind of mask, he said, and he was carrying a backpack that was "very full."
Sounds like what a former cop would say when he saw...anything.
But if this were a drill, IMHO, this is exactly the kind of person who would be the first "witness."
Federal outlays relative to the size of the economy declined to 22 percent in 2012, the smallest since 2008, according to figures from the Congressional Budget Office. It projects the share will drop over the subsequent five fiscal years, reaching 20.6 percent in 2017.

Debt is shrinking while consumer credit is rebuilt. The next few years look very good from a growth standpoint.
We are fast recovering from 2007-08, Peanuts!
Debt is shrinking
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. You mendacious twat, please explain to us how the debt is shrinking.*
*And "because the government is rapidly devaluing the currency" doesn't count unless you are saying the shrinking debt is a bad thing, which I know you're not.
RTFA.
Household debt as a share of income was 92.2 percent last quarter, a decade low and down from its peak of 114 percent in 2009.
Consumer spending is 80% of our GDP and poised for growth as debt decreases.
Thanks for not answering my question. As I said, please explain to us how the debt is actually shrinking.
The debt per capita has increased $12,000 per person since Obama took office. That's near the $15,000 per capita it increased during the Bush years, I might add, with 2013 not in the math yet, which is gonna completely fuck it up for you.
Devaluation of currency is no way to shrink the debt. It's irresponsible and puts bondholders in a shitty spot, which is why interest rates on muni bonds have steadily risen.
You're a fucking idiot.
You're fixated on federal debt.
Tell me who thinks about that when they buy a car? That is my point.
Since neither party will cut spending the only way to minimize federal debt is to grow out of it.
Admit it, you were just trolling for a good bitch session on federal debt and miss the good economic news (and shrinking DEFICITS - down to $680 billion this year).
Palin's Buttplug|11.4.13 @ 8:02PM|#
"Tell me who thinks about that when they buy a car? That is my point."
Yep, ignore it. It'll, uh, well, it won't go away, but dipshit here thinks fooling most of the people part of the time is good enough!
Sooo, our brave Ingsoc troops crushed the subhuman forces of EurEast Asia, and in another brilliant tactical masterstroke, Big Brother thwarted Goldstein's latest insidious plot, and all the traitors have been delt with.. and basically, everything's cool... for now? I love Big Brother... Thanks P.B.
"poised for growth!"
Yeah, real data there.
"Because revenues, under current law, are projected to rise more rapidly than spending in the next two years, deficits in CBO's baseline projections continue to shrink, falling to 2.1 percent of GDP by 2015. However, budget shortfalls are projected to increase later in the coming decade, reaching 3.5 percent of GDP in 2023, because of the pressures of an aging population, rising health care costs, an expansion of federal subsidies for health insurance, and growing interest payments on federal debt. By comparison, the deficit averaged 3.1 percent of GDP over the past 40 years and 2.4 percent in the 40 years before fiscal year 2008, when the most recent recession began. During the next 10 years, both revenues and outlays are projected to be above their 40-year averages as a percentage of GDP (see figure below)."

And, of course, this is with interest rates held artificially low from the QE and a silly assumption that a "Doc Fix" won't happen. Medicaid for all!!!!!
STIMULUS FIXED EVEHTHANG!!!!!!!!
I remember playing the game "Killer" on my college campus 25 years ago. Where you'd run around with toy guns pretending to kill other players.
I would probably still be in jail, if the things back then were like they are now...
But damn, those aren't even trying to look like cops. They look out and out like soldiers, combat troops. Since when did police start wearing camo like that?
(also like how the guy in the patriots hat is so traumatized. Boston Strong my ass. That was the same city that freaked out over a Aqua Teen Hunger Force marketing campaign...)
We played killer when I was in college. I only graduated two years ago. We just played it with silly string or some bullshit instead of toy guns.
Silly string is chemical warfare.
I used water guns in the early 80's
Mr. Smith, you can rape cars all you want, but when you defile Airwolf, we have a problem.
If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little romp was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking dick in your pants. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead.
He's Dr. Moffett to your Stringfellow. Have Dom load up a Bullpup and go to town.
That made me grin from ear to ear.
Whatever you say about the series as a whole, that pilot movie was aces. My only problem is that [SPOILER ALERT] he wasted several million dollars in missiles on the doctor in the Libyan desert. Luckily Reagan said there were plenty more where those came from.
Which element of this story is more bizarre, sex with vehicles or the fact that this show lasted three years?
I desperately wanted to blame his perversion on the debut of Transformers, but it's off by a decade. Shame. Transformers sucked, too.
Wait, what?
I'm shitting on 80s TV. Call me a philistine, but goddamn I have no idea how some of these shows got the airplay they did.
I'm shitting on 80s TV.
Philistine.
90's TV was way worse.
No arguments here. And I don't hate it all, by any means. Married with Children gets a perennial pass, and if we're not confined to US television, Yes, Minister and Blackadder are both favorites.
Also: I'm being glib. I don't get the appeal, but I'm not claiming it has none.
Seinfeld FTW

...and Blackadder are both favorites
I first saw Hugh Laurie on House; when my parents showed me Blackadder I could never see House the same way again.
So you are saying they had a cunning plan?
Seinfeld was great.
The rest of the 90s was almost pure dreck.
You're seriously questioning the appeal of the fantasy of a man owning a private military helicopter who used it to rain hellfire down on terrorists and commies?
Let me guess, You were more of a Blue Thunder guy, weren't you?
I guess. I mean, I grew up poring over Popular Mechanics and the inevitable glossy spreads Time runs for whatever new gadget being pushed by the Pentagon. But the only reason I enjoyed Top Gun was using it as an excuse to invite a girl back to the house, and I still haven't seen the end.
You didn't miss much. Maverick and Iceman go to Russia and have sex with each other.
I'm not even going to rule 34 that.

In one episode he uses it to blow up a guy's gazebo. True story.

The Dems are scared shitless over this. And they should be.
If the Republicans allow them to change even one single thing about this law, they are really even stupider than what I thought they were. The house should refuse to even consider letting them postpone or change any of this.
And Obama will not back down from this, he will go down in flames with it, and he doesn't give a fuck who he takes with him, and rest assured, most of them will get under the bus quickly when he deems it to his advantage. The guy is a true megalomaniac.

"The Dems are scared shitless over this. And they should be."
I have to admit to amazement. The "Only rotten insurance got canceled" lie is around enough, I thought it had traction.
In this case, it was a dem's kid that got axed, so I guess that hag had a hard time convincing the dem that his kid was dumber than the hag.
Don't fix it, replace it.

Maybe not the whole thing at once, but rip out large chunks, the worst parts that barely anyone can defend.
Problem with that is all the free shit it promised. Start taking parts away, and that'll get blamed for the free shit that didn't get delivered.
Let the free shit voters find out that the entire thing is a steaming pile of crap.

Video store?
I thought this was actually going to be a conversation with kids, not some get off my lawn bullshit.
And yes, I'm old enough to have gone to a video store. It sucked.
So am I. Why on Earth would anyone yearn for video stores when Netflix exists? I don't remember ever enjoying movie stores. I remember walking around a bunch and arguing with friends about what we were going to watch.
Now, thanks to the glory of Netflix, I can argue with friends about what to watch as we drink beer and eat popcorn. This is like one-thousand times better.
I have the same feeling about record stores. I don't miss that tedium one bit.
Are you one of my high school friends? We would wander around Blockbuster and fight about what to watch, then not rent anything. Then a few guys would jump into the car and speed off, leaving one guy behind as a prank. Video stores sucked. Also, one rental was like $4, which is half of what Netflix costs per month.
Remember, Netflix is very troubling to Ezra Klein.
The older generation had better music and movies, higher wages, better social skills and ate better food, so I guess the bitching about all that stuff is not without reason.
I'm 49 now, which means that I'm? still young, yet thinking of stuff I grew up with make me feel sorry for everyone born after 1972. I had true rock and roll, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, early John Wayne and meadow 100 meters from my house. My nieces have Atari 2600s, Milli Vanilli and Howard the Duck. Damn!
White politician refuses to shake the hand of a black politician he's debating.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s niece Alveda King thought this was important and commented on the incident:
"Refusing to shake hands with your opponent in front of a television audience takes the loss of civility to a new low. I would hope that his refusal to shake hands had nothing to do with the color of his opponent's skin.
"In a troubled economy, people are looking for leaders who can bring everyone together to solve the problems that confront us all. It is my hope that in these last hours of the race, Ralph Northam will recognize his inappropriate behavior and offer an apology to E.W. Jackson and to all those he hopes to represent."
OMG, Al Sharpton will be soooo mad at this racial disrespect! The New York Times will issue a thunderous editorial denunciation of this... (whisper whisper) Oh, the white guy was a Democrat and the black guy was a Republican? Oops, never mind, no story here.

Northam went to VMI, a very reactionary so called college which glorifies leaders of the racist Confederacy. Not at all surprising that he'd refuse to shake a black man's hand.
Study suggests that gun owners tend to be racist
If there's a gun in your house, you're more likely to be racist, a new study suggests.
And if you support legislation to carry concealed weapons, you're also more likely to be racist, researchers said in their work published in PLoS One.
Researchers decided to delve into the issue after mass shootings in the United States sparked new debates about gun control, and past research that has showed black Americans are more likely to be gun victims than white Americans.
"For example, white Americans oppose gun control to a far greater extent than do black Americans, but whites are actually more likely to kill themselves with their guns than be killed by someone else. So why would you keep them?" researcher Kerry O'Brien said in a press release. "We decided to examine what social and psychological factors predict gun ownership and opposition to gun control."
To parse out the link between racism and guns, the researchers had to control for several other factors, including age, gender, income, education, and political ideology using data from the American National Election Study.
Still, for each one-point increase in anti-black racism (called symbolic racism), the odds of having a gun in the home jumped 50 percent. And supporting policies that allow for concealed guns rose 28 percent.
"black Americans are more likely to be gun victims than white Americans"
And this is because of the incessant Ku Klux Klan activity in black neighborhoods, I take it?
And what's symbolic racism?
Wait, Prof. Wik. I. Pedia explains it all for me:
"Sears & Henry created five characterizing themes that justify the opposition to social policies designed to promote equality, while still supporting the abstract idea of equality:
"1. Racial prejudice and discrimination no longer exists.
"2. Any Black-White differences in economic outcomes is a result of Black people's lack of motivation to work hard.
"3. Black people's anger over inequality is unjustified since they are unwilling to work to get what they want.
"4. Black people seek special favors rather than working to get ahead.
"5. Relative to White people, Black people have been getting more economically than they deserve.
"6. Voting for someone just because they are black and not the best candidate."
"Symbolic racism is a form of modern racism, as it is more subtle and indirect than more overt forms of racism, such as those characterized in Jim Crow Laws. As symbolic racism develops through socialization and its processes occur without conscious awareness, an individual with symbolic racist beliefs may genuinely oppose racism and believe he is not racist. Symbolic racism is perhaps the most prevalent racial attitude today."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolic_racism
that's six
Quit oppressing me with your white male logic!
Be quiet. You're talking to a scientist.
""Symbolic racism is a form of modern racism, as it is more subtle and indirect than more overt forms of racism, such as those characterized in Jim Crow Laws."
Sooo... they're describing the post Kennedy Democratic party in general, and a century of the Progressive movement and ideology in particular here?
It's when a researcher can't prove you're racist so he claims you are in order to advance his political narrative.
How on Earth do you prove if someone is racist? And how do you quantify racism so that you can decide someone is one point more racist than someone else?
Oh pseudoscience, liberals just can't quit you.
The scientist seems totally unbiased too. Clearly there's no potential for confirmation bias with this objective observer.
We keep cars around, and slippery porcelain bathtubs, and we have children despite rates of complications or birth defects, and the festering disease vector that is preschool. In fact, even this marriage thing seems sketchy: inviting someone who knows where the cleaners are kept to share your house and make your food? Terribly risky.
Maybe people don't keep arms because they're ignorant of the miniscule rates of accidental discharge or whathaveyou. Maybe people keep guns in spite of that, as a surety against the (admittedly even more insignificant) possibility of home invasions. You know, a tradeoff.
"Oh pseudoscience, liberals just can't quit you."
Of course you'd say that, you have the brainpan of stage coach tilter.
Yeah. It's shocking that conservatives & libertarians don't trust scientists. I read a bunch of science websites (dumbed down for non-scientists like me) and listen to science-based podcasts. And what I find intriguing is that almost every time a scientists identifies a problem, the solution they propose almost always involve giving more power to the state.
And money... don't forget, MONEY!
True: although that is also state connected b/c it involves giving more "public funds" to scientists.
I think I posted here during the government shutdown, the headline at one science website that read something like "Scientific research will come to a stop with the government shutdown."
Some of us libertarians are actually scientists, and while the made-for-general-consumption shit that comes out of academic science reeks of statism, a large part of scientific journal articles seem relatively apolitical to me* Anyway, to say that libertarians are anti-science is completely insane. Just anti-pseudoscience statist claims.
*caveat, my field is not climate science, but computational biophysics...
Interesting. As I said, I read more popular sites (e.g. Universe Today, Science Daily, etc.) and it's amazing how often stories are posted about "scientific research" on racism of gun-owners, or that govt. regulation of food creates healthier societies.
It makes sense that those kind of stories are promoted since most of the people who write for those sites are not trained scientists but liberal arts folks. And those kinds of stories fit their general narrative of the world.
Yeah, and that's really a shame. There's a lot of really great, non-political science out there (I imagine even climate science, etc!). I think it's not just that they are often liberal arts folk, though. A number of the writers are scientists, too. Perhaps they are under an impression that without some political/whatever significance, people won't find it interesting?
Perhaps. But part of it is that scientists usually earn liberal arts degrees first. And that means in all their other classes they are fed a steady diet of statist worship.
That, and in academia we are generally conditioned to believe that without the State, there would be no science. It's maddening as all hell.
You mean like like Popular Science Editor in Chief Jacob Ward who graduated with a degree in culinary arts and no degree in any actual science?
I am not making that up. I've seen it on his online resume which appears to have been deleted. I'm sure it wasn't deleted because people were mocking him for editing a 'science' magazine despite having no science background.
Did not know that. Most of the sites are read are kept up by "science writers." I have no doubt they have a good understanding of science and they certainly do a good job of explaining things to this layman. But, they are by and large influenced by that statist thinking.
I guess I stand corrected; I would not have thought this would happen.
I couldn't find his education online anymore, but I did find a resume. Tell me which part of this makes him qualified to edit a science magazine.
It's like a parody of a mediocre freelance writer.
I had a professor/lecturer/instructor/whatever the hell she was who had been an editor at a major science magazine.
I can't remember the context, but in the first or second class she repeated the myth that the Inuit people have a bajillion words for snow. I pointed out to her that this had been shown to be incorrect (or charitably, highly exaggerated) but couldn't offer specifics at the time.
I had a textbook that gave a short explanation of why it was a myth, but I had left it at home. So that afternoon I took time out of my (sincerely) busy schedule to find a good scholarly article on the subject and emailed it to her.
She never got back to me. I dropped the class while there was still time in the add/drop period.
IIRC, she also didn't have any science credentials.
Science mags probably care more that you have proven writing ability than that you have science expertise. Most people reading a science magazine like pop science are laymen, so you can get away with being completely wrong without a lot of them noticing.
It matters more that it's well written. That's why you get freelance writers as editor in chief instead of actual scientists.
" Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.
In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.
Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present
and is gravely to be regarded.
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientifictechnological elite." -Eisenhower, 1961
Funny how ppl only remember the MIC part of that speech...
Unfortunately, scientists seem to too often become sycophants who serve their political masters well with little reward.
Does it come back to money again? If you step too far outside the accepted view of things, would it be harder to get funding?
I don't think so... I mean, I haven't been in science that long (I'm a 24 year old PhD student) but then I rarely see dissent. I think it also matters what your venue is--in a research institute setting, people are more likely to care that you have publications, which will get you grants (and frankly I'm not really sure that granting reviewers give a shit about your politics, though that may be optimistic)
What are the units of racism? One point of what?
I'd say "American", but no one outside of here would get it.
Go fuck yourself.
That's just your white side talking.
The white side is the one where my holster is located.
Your black side needs to calm your white side down. Tell it to drop the gun, give it some Wonderbread and mayonnaise sandwiches, and show it some Seth Rogan movies.
And if you have both black and white ancestry, can you demand reparations from yourself?
Is that artisanal mayonnaise?
"The white side is the one where my holster is located."
Your best line ever. I think as a prize I should send you a two gun rig.
It's almost like symbolic racism is a nonsense phrase liberals can use to prove whatever they want to prove because the term's meaning is completely nebulous and ill-defined.

I was actually having a conversation with a friend the other day, and he basically said that he thought that wealth is rarely created, just redistributed, so the whole thing is a zero sum game. I was pretty stunned for a while, because... how can you be so unaware? This guy is pretty intelligent, too...

Yep, all 7Bn of us are still arguing over that two bushels of lichen Zug harvested after the last ice age.
I'm gonna dispute your claim re the guy's intelligence; how dumb do you have to be to ignore 50,000 years of history?
I did think the same, but in his professional life he does do good science, which tells me that he does have functioning reasoning capability, and can use it well. Why he chooses to be completely, totally ignorant in a way that even my SPUSA committee member friend isn't is beyond me.
I made a similar comment above; but if they complete a liberal arts degree then the non-science classes are basically all statist in orientation.

OT: Sections Of Rand Paul's Op-Ed On Drug Sentencing Plagiarized From Article Week Earlier
Sigh.
Honestly, he should have seen this coming and been much more careful...
Yeah, I don't know what to say about all that. I think there are only so many ways to repeat talking points and data like
Since mandatory sentencing began in the 1970s in response to a growing drug-and-crime epidemic, America's prison population has quadrupled, to 2.4 million. America now jails a higher percentage of its citizens than any other country, including China and Iran, at the staggering cost of $80 billion a year
But it's stuff like this:
Most public officials ? liberals, conservatives and libertarians ? have decided that mandatory-minimum sentencing is unnecessary. At least 20 states, both red and blue, have reformed their mandatory-sentencing laws in some way, and Congress is considering a bipartisan bill that would do the same for federal crimes.
That's concerning since it's copied verbatim.
He needs to own up to this and affirm his commitment to reforming MM and drug policy.
"He needs to own up to this and affirm his commitment to reforming MM and drug policy."
He needs to go through his staff with pink slips. And own up to it.

10 worst cities to visit in the US
lotta butthurt in the comments
Though many of my friends have gone to Chicago as tourists, and seemed to enjoy it.
I was gonna say, I've been to Chicago (albeit not recently), and I really liked it. The sales tax is a turn-off, of course, but the Olympic bid and foreclosures are of no concern to me as a tourist.
The Chicago one is unbelievably dumb because the things he talks about are unrelated to tourism. The sales tax will obviously raise the cost of buying things, but New York City has an 8.9% sales tax. That's only .3% lower than Chicago.
As for crime, no tourist is going to go to the parts of the city where crime is an issue. You're also a tourist, so home foreclosures aren't going to dampen your time hitting clubs and eating at restaurants.
This was my favorite.

I can't think of a reason why anyone would want to visit Camden, New Jersey or Stockton, California.
At least all those other cities listed have sports teams.
At least all those other cities listed have sports teams.
One of which will...
Why anyone would go to Camden as a tourist when Philly is so close is beyond me. Philly has a fuckload of interesting Revolutionary history (even though it's become a shithole). Even Trenton would probably be more interesting than Camden. Or just go to Atlantic City and get your Boardwalk Empire on.
Camden is the definitive asshole of the US.
Disclaimer: I've never been to Detroit.
I wouldn't stop ANYWHERE in Camden, NJ for ANYTHING. Not that there's anything open to stop there for...

Yeah, Nando, they all keep it in the swimming pool to dive in, right?
So 44% of millionaires don't have a substantial amount of cash and almost 65 percent either don't have much cash or plan to invest it in the next 2 years.
So there actually isn't much hoarding.
I have about 26 bucks in the change jar.... does that count?

805 skinny-dippers assemble in Florida to set world record
Naked and wet, more than 800 nudists paraded into the waters of Haulover Beach Sunday afternoon in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most skinny-dippers at a single venue.
The skin-baring event drew 805 people, breaking the previous record of 729 people set this past July on El Playazo Beach in Vera Playa, Almeria, Spain.
The world record, still pending approval from Guinness, took several hours, two counters and an independent supervisor.
Richard Mason, president of the South Florida Free Beaches Association, which sponsored the event, said preparation was strenuous. In addition to a list of signatures, Guinness required everyone to enter the water at the same location, creating a "gateway," according to Mason. Two 11-foot steel rods and a "Guinness Gateway" sign greeted participants.
"It's like herding cats," Mason said.
For the Haulover Beach nudists, the third time was a charm. Mason said a previous attempt in 2009, which attracted 879 people, did not meet all of the requirements. And an attempt earlier this July, during National Nude Recreation Week, was cancelled because of stormy weather.
Oh the humanity!

The last time the Winnipeg Jets beat the Detroit Red Wings, the Clinton Presidency was trying to cover up the Ron Brown murder.
So the new "DONT PANIC" theme for ACA supporters is a version of the following-
As Johnson explains to his clients, when he grew up, there were no seat belts in cars and you used a crank to roll up your windows. Today cars come stock with air-bags, seat belts and electric windows, whether you like it or not. The same now goes for health plans.
"You don't have a choice," Johnson said. "Everybody gets them, but it still comes with a price."
I've seen the seat-belt argument come up twice in two days (and probably plenty more) which means the latest marching orders have come down from Valhalla. This is such a laughably fraudulent argument it makes me wonder how desperate the left is getting.
They're not desperate. Sheep don't get desperate. They just bleat the marching orders they're given.
It is amusing how fucked they are, though. The ACA has probably destroyed Dem chances for the presidency and Congressional majorities for a long time to come. Which is hilarious.
I can't decide if I want the Bears or the Packers to win. I always like to see them both lose.
Did you mix that metaphor by hand or did you have some kind of blender?
"If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate."
(I did it by hand. Just like I just ground my own meat for a meatloaf--beef, pork, bacon--and then hand mixed it with some eggs, peccorino romano, shallots, parsley, salt, pepper, and sauteed spinach and garlic. It's not quite done but it smells SO FUCKING GOOD. Twenty more minutes.)

"They're not desperate. Sheep don't get desperate. They just bleat the marching orders they're given."
And that's the reason I'm not optimistic. Every further O'care disaster is met with a new lie, and the Obots nod and say, 'yeah, see, there's nothing wrong. The guy is still dreamy. He only wants to do good. BOOOOOOOOSH!'
What the real severe cultists do is irrelevant. There is a substantial portion of the TEAM BLUE base that only stay cultist as long as they experience no pain. Obama and his staggeringly incompetent administration have managed to do what TEAM RED could never do: bring pain to the very people who voted for them. It's mindbogglingly stupid, but they did it in their arrogance. And I just have to laugh.
I agree with you Sevo to a point, but sooner or later they break too many eggs and the omelet tastes so bad that people are literally dying in the streets.
Also, that meatloaf recipe sounds delicious.

OK, my sample is skewed, since it's the national media and (worse) what I hear on the street in SF. Given that, it is NOT hopeful.
I hope your reading of the issue is more accurate.

Listening to Dana Gould's podcast: Hillary will win in 2016 unless the Rs run that smart moderate Christie and ignore the extremists.
These people really believe that anyone to the right of or less statist than Christie are some sort of bomb-wielding anarchists.
"Race to the Bottom" will take on a new meaning in 2016.

"We Call B.S.! Hillary's big S.F. events closed to press"
"Clinton's much-anticipated speech at the Moscone Center on Saturday before the National Association of Realtors conference, a convention that is drawing 22,000 people to San Francisco this week, will be blacked out ? closed to the media.
So will her big fundraiser Saturday night with Chelsea Clinton at San Francisco's Regency Ballroom, a "Millennial Network" event to benefit the Clinton Foundation."
Transparency is contagious.
I thought the proper procedure was to lock them in the cleaning supply closet for the duration?
Then where do you put Biden?
So the shit-for-brains party is going to put up another goddamn fucking east coast liberal establishment puppet. Genius.
Finally, a libertarian candidate!
At least according to the jacket guy
I'd actually rather have manual windows.
Power windows are much harder to open in case of an emergency (you pretty much need to carry a hammer in your car to break them), the mechanism breaks easily (I've had to fix them on every car I've owned, eventually, not the case for manual windows).
Are they more convenient? Only slightly...
In the event of unscheduled vehicular transition to an aqueous environment, drivers and passengers should remain securely belted and wait for trained first-responders to arrive and secure the scene. Unauthorized self-defenstration is strictly prohibited.

Can't even make music without beer getting involved.
Art Bell is OFF THE AIR
Well, he certainly was a mixed bag, wasn't he?
Tennessee: County commissioner, others face investigation over alleged torture
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Stunning claims of torture now have a county commissioner and two other men facing a criminal investigation.
Murfreesboro police confirmed that they're investigating an inmate's bizarre claims of a business deal gone bad.
That man, Kenneth Cooper, has a history of mental illness.
But, while the men insisted that it's one big lie, NewsChannel 5 Investigates discovered video that could back up Cooper's incredible claims about what happened to him in July of last year.
"They confronted me and put a dog collar behind my neck and repeatedly burned me with cigarettes," he told NewsChannel 5 in an exclusive interview.
Wow.
So they forgot to lose the video? Or were they too stupid to figure out how to erase it?
They made a video? Wow is right.
After reading the details of the story.....ugh. Slim Shady...really? Color me skeptical.
He admits to defrauding $20k from some people and complains about their attempts to recover his theft? Am I supposed to think the confessed fraud is the good guy and his victims are the bad guys?
Maybe Green Bay would have been better off putting in the Discount Double Check guy.
I thought he retired.
Again.
And again.
And again.
It was their defense that was the problem. They couldn't stop Forte...
If you are looking for a scapegoat on the offense, blame the offensive line.
