Minneapolis Police Union President: NFL Ban on Guns at Stadium Violates Off-Duty Cops' Rights as Officers

New NFL security rules will now ban off-duty law enforcement officers from taking their guns into stadiums. But some Minneapolis peace officers are saying they believe the policy is a violation of their rights.

The letter went out Sept. 11, 2013, telling all team owners and presidents that firearms are strictly prohibited within NFL facilities.

The crackdown on firearms concerns Minneapolis Police Federation President John Delmonico. He believes a call for off-duty officers to give up their weapons at the gate violates an officer's rights, as determined by state law.

Violation of their rights, specific to their anointed status of knighthood. Nevertheless, most of those stadiums are publicly subsidized by states and localities, so they may have a point. As owners, the NFL can ban you Mr. Ticketholder from having a gun in your possession (which would make them prone to extra-liability if ANYTHING were to happen to you, right?), but if the state has a financial stake with extenuating controls written as they always are in government contracts then the NFL can't ban these cops. Given the cops are, theoretically speaking, merely public servants, and not, again theoretically speaking knights, they are the extension of the public will itself. Putting the NFL in the unique position of being an owner with no right to ban weapons on its property.
