DC House Delegate Reportedly Has "Heated Exchange" With President Obama Over DC Municipal Funding
Eleanor Holmes Norton goes to bat for her constituents
Democrats may push the line that it's Republicans holding the government hostage in the current partial shutdown, but Democrats caught in the crossfire don't feel that way. Yesterday, DC's mayor Vincent Gray, a Democrat, confronted Harry Reid over Democrats' refusal to agree to a Republican measure that would fund Washington's municipal government during the shutdown. Reid responded by telling Gray he was on his side and not to "screw it up."
DC's House delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, meanwhile, reportedly confronted President Obama at a meeting he had with House Democrats at the White House yesterday.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) had what some colleagues called "a heated exchange" and what she described as "a conversation" with President Obama during a White House meeting Wednesday afternoon regarding the District's budget constraints as a result of the partial government shutdown.
Norton attended the meeting in the White House East Room with nearly 200 House Democrats and was one of a handful given the opportunity to ask the president a question. When she was called upon, Norton pressed Obama to support a House-passed bill that would permit the District to use its locally raised tax funds to maintain operations until Dec. 15.
The Post's source, a fellow Democrat lawmaker, described Norton as "parochial." Obama insisted he won't fund the government piecemeal and Norton reportedly refused to yield the microphone. She says she had a "conversation" with the president. Obama will be having more conversations with House Republicans today.

“Norton pressed Obama to support *a House-passed bill* that would permit the District to use its locally raised tax funds to maintain operations until Dec. 15.”
You can say it, Eleanor – a bill passed by the *Republican* House but blocked by the Democratic Senate and Democratic President.
Who knew that the Democratic leadership of DC were teabagging anarchist nihilist terrorist hostage-takers funded by the Koch brothers?
I love the completely predictable switch at the end of the movie where the who you were supposed to think was the good guy turns out to be the bad guy.
Thanks for the spoiler, asshole.
Its a sled!

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Someone is stealin my bit.
the Bruce Willis character is dead.
Reminds me of the Chinese title for The Sixth Sense.
The translated the title to……….

Awesome.
What a twist!
And youll never guess who lukes father really is…
Or who his sister is.
It was a daydream – Kevin Lomax never really went to NYC to become a bigshot lawyer.
Norton just starred in the first episode of David Chapell’s ‘When Keeping it Real Goes Right.’
Please continue, Mr. President. No, no, your strategy is working–only the mean old GOP is being blamed.
The contempt for government is growing. Excellent. I wonder if it’s possible for the Senate to break ranks with the president and negotiate a separate peace with the House? Very unlikely, but maybe not totally so.
Not with Harry Reid in charge. He must have pictures of most of the caucus with farm animals they way they follow him.
Leftist are collectivist. They dare not go against the leader of the herd.
Reid has limited power if a small number of Democratic senators break ranks.
Not a probably outcome, but a nonzero possibility.
A probably outcome? A probable outcome. It is not.
Probably.
I like how you verb your name for this post.
“That’s a powerful committee chair you’ve got there. Be a shame is something happened to it.”
That goes both ways.
That was my thought.
How Reid is still majority leader is beyond me. There has to be some senator that the D senators respect more?
Boehner? Pelosi? Reid? Fuck if I know how any of these have even a committee, let along the jobs they do.
Add McConnell to the list.
Sure. Not a complete or comprehensive list of idiots in DC, to be certain.
I just wanted to get all 4 leadership positions in the list.
I think he’s done if he loses this. Especially now that Obama has already got him lined up for under-bussing.
It seems that whenever the Dems throw up a talking point about some program that the mean old Republicans are shutting down, the House Republicans pass a bill to fund that particular program.
The Dems keep pressing the talking points about “why won’t you fund the Puppies and Children Enabling Act?” and the Reps say “we passed a bill to fund that but you Dems refuse to pass it,” and the Dems then scream “piecemeal!” Then the Dems go right back to the Republicans failing to fund the Puppies and Children Act.
“You won’t fund the NIH program for children with cancer!”
“Uh, we passed a bill doing precisely that but your friends are blocking it.”
“You know very well that’s not what we meant! We meant that any bill funding child cancer victims must also fund welfare and ‘art’ and foreign aid and other stuff we can’t defend on the merits because it won’t fit into a campaign commercial!”
I’m not Washington insider, but from what I can gather, it seems Norton has forfeited a lot of cocktail party invitations.
Well, I’m off to start my own cocktail parties! With blackjack! And hookers!
I am reminded of Clarence Frogman Henry–“Yoou always hurt the one you love.”
Norton attended the meeting in the White House East Room with nearly 200 House Democrats and was one of a handful given the opportunity to ask the president a question.
*gasp* She’s so luckyyyyyyyyy
“Obama insisted he won’t fund the government piecemeal”
Doesn’t the omnibus budget pretty much fund shit piecemeal?
Dammit, he has only one pen (due to the SEEEKWETOR!) so he has to ration the whole, signing thing and ink and stuff.
So he’s just rationing the ink for the important stuff.
No matter. It’s the rethuglicans’ fault. Obama can do no wrong.
So will there be a giant banner headline on the Huffington Post front page declaring a DEMOCRAT CIVIL WAR?
“Breaking under the pressure of the Republican hostage-takers, several so-called Democrats have developed Stockholm Syndrome and taken the viewpoint of their victimizers. Obama expressed compassion for these traumatized Democrats and hopes they’ll get the help they need. ‘I hope the Republicans are happy now,’ he said, ‘you’ve literally driven people insane but you refuse to fund their mental-health treatment!'”
Not sure if you guys had seen this one the other day, but Sowell wrote this piece about the shutdown blame game that I’ve been torturing my liberals friends with because he spells it out so reasonably.
http://www.nationalreview.com/…..mas-sowell
It’s been fun watching them twist in to knots to try and argue against Sowell’s point.
I would just like to see the Senate vote on a fucking budget, even by piecemeal, at some point. Of course actually passing one would be nice, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Yeah, I brought that up the other dday when someone was bitching about the House not submitting a “clean” CR.
I said that the Dems have a lot of nerve to whine about a “clean” CR since they didn’t even pass a budget for three years, two of them while they had all three branches of government.
They shut up pretty quickly.
Basically every argument I’ve seen so far in defense of the Democrats is retarded.
In lieu of a libertarian government, I am fine with this gridlock.
The “shutdown” kind of gridlock, yes.
The kind of “gridlock” since 2009 or so of Reid throwing temper tantrums left and right and not even allowing budget bills to be brought to the floor, so there is huge media/public build ups that ultimately end with a CR getting passed as temporary measures every 3-4-5-6 months, which do nothing but perpetuate the debt and keep the status quo going. I could do without that.
In lieu of a libertarian government, I am also fine with the government imploding. Or its head exploding.
What’s the point? The government employees will still be paid, except now they don’t even have to show up and pretend to work.
so it’s a win-win.
Considering how the fedgov operates, I think I’d rather pay for daycare than actually have them running around doing stuff.
Why won’t the Republicans just compromise? I mean, all they need to do is give Obama everything he wants with nothing in return, right? Isn’t that what compromise means? Give the other guy everything for nothing in return, right? Why are the Republicans so unreasonable?
“Heated Exchange” in the White House is telling the President he’s wrong to his face now?
Look, heresy is heresy.
I’m sure Obama raised his voice half an octave to confront the heretic for her blasphemy.
He’s fucking with with their graft. It’s personal.
Obama is so wrapped up in himself he might just drive off the cliff.
Since I’m living the DC dream already and feel no need to discuss it ad nauseam, might I ask a totally non-political and completely off-topic question?
Is it worth $150 extra to fly nonstop, cross-country in the dead of winter, instead of connecting in Philly? I’d really love to get to my ski vacation on time and during the daylight, so I’m slightly leaning toward nonstop. But $150 is a lot of money and I could use that some other shit, like a lift ticket upgrade or something.
WWHyRD?
DC to Colorado? Utah?
SLC
We already determined KK is a dirty, snowboard hating, flatlander who only likes greens and icy runs. She is going to UT.
No no no no. I’m a dirty, board-hating, flatlander who only likes greens and packed powder runs! Just because I can ski on ice (unlike you Rocky Mountain sissies), doesn’t mean I like it!
only sissies ski. Real folk strap into a single piece of wood (Skiers can’t commit) and point it down.
ice, powder, groomed, corn…it matters not if gravity is on my side.
as an aside, it is best to learn to board NOT on some stupid Breckenridge green bunny hill bu on a Snowmass or Copper fast Blue. It’s the only way to fly.
But Utah is amazing. The Wasatch has some of the driest snow and steepest chutes at any inbounds resort. Alta is for skiers, yo.
We’ll be skiing the Park City area – staying slopeside at Park City and probably going up to Deer Valley a day or two.
But Alta may very well be the best ski area in North America. Park city is okay, the jupiter bowl area is steep and a taste of the good stuff. The Canyons is probably the best if you have the legs to ski ninety-nine ninety all day. Deer Valley improved a lot when they opened the empire bowl, but most of the ski area is only good if like pretty lodges and groomers.
It’s a hike to Alta but it is legendary for a reason.
Yes, I like groomers and cruisers. I don’t ski for the thrill, but rather for the scenery. We specifically chose PC/DV for the large number of greens and blues.
Plus, my Pa is 73 and hasn’t skied in about 25 years.
I ski for the thrill, but I can respect that. You’ve made a good choice then.
I learned to ski at Park City at age 4. They have greens that are as wide as a freeway and a couple of miles long. Deer Valley is a little to ritzy for me, it’s even worse than Aspen nowadays. My boss used to stay at some lodge there that was like $10K a night…
Yeah, after a little research, we determined DV was a little out of our range. I like a little more down-to-earth. When I go to Stowe, I stay at a motel and not one of the mega-resorts.
(out of our range lodging-wise. We’ll definitely ski there, though).
DV and PCMR have better quality snow than Canyons, at least in my opinion. I’ve been to Canyons/Wolf Creek/Parkwest or whatever it’s called now maybe 10 times total, and it has always been really icy and patchy.
The cottonwoods have even better snow and can average over 500″ per season, but like waffles said, Alta ain’t for cruisers…
“The Canyons is probably the best if you have the legs to ski ninety-nine ninety Deschuttes all day.”
FIFY
I’m starting to get all jazzed for this trip, despite the fact that I won’t be seeing my pals in VT (I saw them over the summer anyway, so fuck’em).
Any tips for altitude adjustment? I think the base is higher than the top of Bolton Valley in VT.
Any tips for altitude adjustment?
I’ve been told by several people, and I know this sounds odd but trust me it works, to drink about a pint of liquor before you ascend the peak. It has something to do with oxygen absorption being accelerated.
Oh, and smoke a fat j as you’re drinking the booze. I’ve also heard that works quite well in tandem with alcohol when preparing to ski with a bunch of Mormons.
Where would one even get a j in Utah?
And by the way, didn’t you say you and your man were gonna be out our way this past summer on a motorbike trip? What the fuck happened to that?
I think the bike trip is fall 2014. My friend who rides currently lives in the UK, but will be moving stateside next year, so I old her we’d wait.
KK,
Drink lots of water, especially before you go to bed. The altitude part is made worse by how dry it is.
Jupiter peak is 10,000ft, so if you hike it, you are going to feel it no matter what. Some people do get a little swelling in the limbs at altitude, so anything that thins the blood is helpful for that, including booze. I take 2 exedrin in the AM and 2 at lunch and it helps with the edema and headaches. If I’m going into the back country, I’ll take a 2 liter of mountain dew and a couple of twix bars in my backpack, and they’re usually gone by lunchtime.
At night, keep the temperature down in your room, and that will help your body acclimate more quickly. My little brother used to get violently ill on our first day of trips to mammoth (base approx 7000ft and summit 11,000 ft), and keeping the window open at night took care of that.
Or, get Diamox from your doc before you go.
Awesome advice! I think even though I will be arriving in SLC in the morning (opted for the nonstop flight), I won’t ski that day and instead take it easy. At a pub.
I read that as Sasquatch and suddenly thought of STEVE SMITH.
How long is the layover in Philthadelphia?
Something like 2 hours
Only 2 hours? I don’t see how the extra $150 is worth it, unless you’re hoping to avoid any possible weather delays that might strike Philly.
That’s the key. Weather delays in Philly in February. It can happen. It’s not as likely in DC.
I’m with Visc, if it’s only two hours $150 isn’t worth it.
The only time it’s really worth it is if its likely you will miss your connection because the layover is too short, or of the layover is like 6 hours or more. Other than that two is nothing.
That’s extra booze money just going to waste.
Anything is worth it to avoid Philly.
Is there anywhere to get a cheese steak in the airport?
Do you want your luggage to arrive?
Is that worth $150?
No luggage – everything will be shipped.
Wow – even my Pa, the tightest screw to ever walk a turn at Shawshank, says I should opt for the nonstop.
Non-stop, if you are taking a vote.
Ditto. If you are talking Philly to SLC, it can get messed up on either end.
Pay the cash. Connections, especially in winter are asking for trouble. Your time is worth the money.
Hey, are any of you guys going to the Reason HQ (it’s in LA, so suck it beltway boys!) shindig tonight?
“shindig”- isn’t that a racist term?
Not unless there’s a private jet waiting for me at the Tallahassee airport right now. Could someone check with the Koch brothers for me?
Right now I’m planning on going with a friend. It’d be my first time visiting their HQ. I trust the architecture is suitably libertarian?
Not a single building code was followed!
Yes, but I’m also thinking a giant statue of Atlas with the world perched precariously on his shoulders adorns the entrance and the floor is paved with gold tiles.
No – that’s the State Dept Harry S. Truman building you’re thinking of!
I wasn’t invited.
Yes you were, dum dum!
Hmmmm. And there is some really good food nearby the HQ too…..
no one answered my question either sloop…bunch of sill libertarians.
Wait, what’s going on? Is walker shilling his book? Some sort of pre-cruise sausage party?
Here’s the thing. I like you guys (there are no libertarian women) and all, but the one thing we have in common is we’re happy to leave each other alone. I just can’t get excited about going to an event where I leave you alone and you leave me alone, since I can do that right here without having to spend a moment of my time on the 405.
What Mad Scientist is trying to say is that he’ll be the one with his dong hanging out. Approach with caution.
You’re going to have to be a bit more specific than that.
OK, that’s giggle-worthy. 2 points for NutraSweet.
Damn, MS. I’ve got to say that’s a rather long way to say you’re gonna stay home and masturbate (furiously).
Well, Banjos and I will be taking Baby Reason in case anybody wants to meet up either there, before or after.
No matter what I say now it’ll be taken the wrong way by you pervs, so I won’t try to disguise my true plans for the evening: using my new can of penetrating lube, I’ll be yanking off the exhaust system on my “race” car and sliding in a new one made by Racing Beat.
Any idea how hard it would be or expensive it would be for me to swap an AT for a 5-speed or 6-speed in an older Merc SL500? And if I did it, would that make a decent race car? I’m thinking of just taking it and gutting as much weight and turning it into an open top racer but it’s an automatic.
That’s funny, I sold my SL600 to pay for my race trailer. Make sure the racing series you’re planning on entering will allow convertibles. Some will if the hardtop is installed, some won’t no matter what.
I have no idea how difficult it would be to swap the transmission in that car. You’d need something that would take the power, bolt on with minimal mods, and not interfere with the exhaust system. Certainly someone has tried it, but not many people do modifications like this on that car so it could take quite a bit of hunting to figure it out. Alternatively, you could race the car with the current slushbox in it. There are lots of guys in my series running with auto trannies. So long as you can keep it cool it will last, but certainly it’s not as much fun as shifting gears yourself.
My opinion is the car would make a great race car, in theory, for someone with a lot of money to throw at it. It’s wide, low, has a short wheelbase, makes gobs of power, has plenty of room for brake upgrades, a limited slip diff, etc. But it’s also heavy (even after you remove the fancy seats, A/C, soft top, etc.), thirsty (you’ll likely spend more time refueling than your competitors), stock parts are absurdly expensive, and aftermarket parts are exceedingly hard to find.
cont.
I can put a 3-row aluminum racing radiator in my RX-7 for less than the cost of the stock rad in the SL600. You WILL break water pumps and fuel pumps. You WILL wear out control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, shocks, and brake rotors. You WILL blow head gaskets.
I never discourage people from building a race car, but if you choose this one be ready for it to get expensive.
Yes Mr. President, please continue to show what a petulant child you are.
Why don’t we give most of DC back to Maryland? We gave parts of DC back to Virginia. All we need to keep is the Federal stuff and then DC can be a real city
1.) The Dems want to make DC a state, so they get 2 extra Senators.
2.) MD wouldn’t take it. Balmor wouldn’t like it (loss of prestige) and the state treasury would have a second money pit to worry about.
Kevin
Congressman: Wait a second, I want to tack on a rider to that bill ? $30 million of taxpayer money to support the perverted arts.
Speaker: All in favor of the amended Springfield-slash-pervert bill? [entire Congress boos] Bill defeated. [gavel]
Kent Brockman: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: democracy simply doesn’t work.
By the way, I watched Casino again the other day and realized for the first time that one of the Gaming Commission scumbags in it is supposed to be Harry Reid.
Traditionally, one of the only positive things you could say about mobsters was they had an absolute hostility to communist. Now they are in bed with them and including them in the score. Standards broke down somewhere there.
“Obama insisted he won’t fund the government piecemeal”
While he is currently operating the government piecemeal based on his own political calculations of what will cause the most visible inconveniences to the public.
Yeah, that’s what I think–he’s doing more piecemealing than he’s accusing the House of doing.
The House should pass another budget “secretly” without Obamacare in it, then try and rush the Senate to vote on it immediately, telling them “we have to pass it to find out what’s in it”.
Nice one.
What they should really do is pass one that kills whatever programs they want to kill, but triples the salary of the Senate.
Non-essential services: Obama shuts down National Do Not Call Registry.
Meanwhile, the Wookiee’s “Let’s Move” website is still going strong.
It’s raining in PHL today with low ceilings. Flight Aware tells me delays are averaging over 2 hours. I’m just not sure I want to fuck with that, given my limited vacation time and only getting to ski once a year and all.
There are a couple other options, like Dallas and ATL for layovers, but they’re about $100 – $75 less than the nonstop.
^This^ and “Make sure it’s a hand you are about to shake.”
