Another Obamacare "glitch" could cause 500,000 children to lose their insurance coverage.

  • A letter from nine Senate Judiciary Committee members, including the chairman, Pat Leahy, and the ranking Republican, Charles Grassley, asks the intelligence community's inspector general to review two of the NSA's data collection programs.
  • Kenyan security forces continue to search for militants at the Nairobi mall attacked over the weekend. The White House has not confirmed whether any Americans died in the attack, but the Kenyan foreign minister said two or three were involved. President Obama pledged law enforcement support to Kenya in its investigation of the Al Qaeda-linked attack.
  • Remember how the feds targeted the AP and its reporters in an investigation into embarrassing leaks that contradicted the Obama campaign's assertions about Al Qaeda's strength? An ex-FBI agent working as a consultant for the Bureau has pled guilty.
  • How did Aaron Alexis get a security clearance despite his checkered past? He lied.
  • What government shutdown? 59 percent of non-defense employees will remain on the job even if the White House and Congress can't agree on a spending deal.
  • A sign of recovery? Illegal immigration may be ticking up after taking a dive during the recession.
  • A Gallup poll shows a record high 60 percent of Americans believe government is too big.
  • Abercrombie & Fitch has settled a battery of discrimination lawsuits filed in California, and has agreed to allow female Muslim workers to wear headscarves on shift.
  • Ten people, including a six-year-old girl, were shot and killed in the outskirts of the Mexican border town of Juarez.

How did Aaron Alexis get a security clearance despite his checkered past? He lied.

    There's always the lying loophole.

Perhaps I have always misunderstood the purpose of a background check, but I thought one of the reasons for performing them was to root out lies.

      1. gaijin   12 years ago

I don't think in this case it's s imple background check either. He had a security clearance which is supposed to entail alot more 'probing' of one's background (e.g., talking to people who know you, digging into past employment). It's failure all the way!

      2. Certified Public Asskicker   12 years ago

Basically everyone in MD has a security clearance.

I am surprised people think it means anything.

    3. Rich   12 years ago

Then federal investigators dismissed the omissions, and made one of their own ? deleting any reference to Aaron Alexis' use of a gun in that arrest.

There's always the dismissive federal investigator loophole.

A Gallup poll shows a record high 60 percent of Americans believe government is too big.

We need a new government agency empowered to fix what Americans think.

    1. Andrew S.   12 years ago

City attorney accused of naked prowling
Waking up and finding a naked stranger in her bedroom must have been downright shocking.

But probably not as shocking as finding out the nude dude works in your city's administration.

Ronald D. Combs, a longtime attorney for the city of Gainesville is behind bars after being accused of prowling in and around a woman's home while naked early Saturday morning, reports The Gainesville Sun.

The incident was equally shocking to the lawyer: He was tased by cops who said Combs, 59, was moving through nearby yards wearing only a skull cap and running shoes, the paper reported.

Warmists say they won't disbelieve models unless 'pause' lasts another 20 years!
..."If it (the present one) continues for two more decades, we may start to think that the computer models are underestimating internal variability."...

Warming Plateau? Climatologists Face Inconvenient Truth
...Despite resistance from many researchers, the German ministries insist that it is important not to detract from the effectiveness of climate change warnings by discussing the past 15 years' lack of global warming. Doing so, they say, would result in a loss of the support necessary for pursuing rigorous climate policies. "Climate policy needs the element of fear," Ott openly admits. "Otherwise, no politician would take on this topic."

Germany's Federal Ministry of Research would prefer to leave any discussion of the global warming hiatus entirely out of the new IPCC report summary. "In climate research, changes don't count until they've been observed on a timescale of 30 years," ...

    1. Longtorso, Johnny   12 years ago

...The researchers' problem: Their climate models should have been able to predict the sudden flattening in the temperature curve. Offering explanations after the fact for why temperatures haven't increased in so long only serves to raise doubts as to how reliable the forecasts really are.

Despite this, most Germans have not yet lost their faith in climate research. According to the SPIEGEL survey, 67 percent of Germans still consider the predictions reliable....

...Environmental policymakers within the IPCC fear, though, that climate skeptics and industry lobbyists could exploit these scientific uncertainties for their own purposes. The IPCC's response has been to circle the wagons. To ensure it remains the sole authority on climate predictions, the panel plans not to publish the complete report for some time after the release of the summary and not even release transcripts from the negotiations in Stockholm....

    2. Smilin' Joe Fission   12 years ago

Most German's still believe that solar in northern Europe and wind power are "green".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's much-touted clean air campaign ? launched with the fanfare closing of the nation's nuclear plants and a vow to lead European climate change controls ? has fallen flat, as a recent report shows pollution levels have actually increased for the second year in a row.

      1. Ted S.   12 years ago

        Most German's what believe this?

        1. Smilin' Joe Fission   12 years ago

They believe in renewable energy as a "climate change stopper", even as their utility bills skyrocket and their CO2 emissions increase.

The other people in line and the employees uniformly condemned the insult, according to reports. ...

NYTimes: Obama should destroy coal industry to set good international example
...But the news from the rest of the world ? steadily increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, rising sea levels, more violent weather events, persistent droughts ? is not encouraging. The burden on the United States to set a positive example is as heavy as ever.

Why does it seem like practice for a similar attack in the U.S.?

      1. Swiss Servator, Spare a Franc?   12 years ago

Maybe he is thinking of the long time AQ call for similar type attacks here?

        1. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

It's still a pretty big jump to this being practice.

You walk into the food courts of a handful of malls on a given day and detonate a backpack bomb. Then again. And again. The malls will be empty soon enough and it doesn't take practice.

          1. Brett L   12 years ago

Honestly, I am okay with this because I haven't been in a mall in 5 years.

            1. fish   12 years ago

You're still not safe Brett....I've heard that the trrists are dressing like UPS and FedEx guys delivering your Amazon.com orders to catch you slackers who won't go to the galleria.

          2. Drake   12 years ago

Maybe because we've seen a string of successful (in terms of number killed) attacks in gunfree zones.

Terrorists aren't so stupid they don't understand that a couple of shooters coming from multiple directions could inflict a massive number of casualties.

            1. Thane can punch all your buns   12 years ago

It would be entertaining, post attack*, to see gun-grabbers ask that legislation not be pushed hastily in a time of crisis as people call for stronger self-defense rights.

*glob forbid an attack, of course

            2. Night Elf Mohawk   12 years ago

Of course they understand it. They also understand that car bombs could inflict a massive number of casualties, but that doesn't mean that a car bombing overseas is practice for doing it here.

              1. Drake   12 years ago

Bombs seem tougher to build or buy in the U.S. The Boston Marathon bombs were kind of duds.

                1. Root Boy   12 years ago

Still killed 8?? or so. And shut down a whole city. Beyond the overeaction that should not happen, imagine one of these attacks at a stadium during a game. Sure they have guards, but dedicated terrorists could shoot their way in and onto the field and cause huge carnage.

                  1. Virginian   12 years ago

Actually the nastiest thing I can imagine in a stadium would be shooting across the field to the opposite side. Rapid fire would hit somebody, and probably spark a stampede for the exits, which would kill more.

While walking in the woods as a teenager, I had a golden eagle fly about 8 feet over my head then perch in a nearby tree. It was pretty wild because the shadow of the bird preceded it, also passing directly over me and I could hear the flight of the bird. I watched it for about 5 minutes then it flew off.

Relaying the story I joked that the eagle was checking me out for a meal but decided I was a little too big. I was a small kid. From those pictures it's evident that was was scarily close to and eagle's size criteria.

        1. Suthenboy   12 years ago

I once watched a golden eagle attempt to catch a red squirrel. It missed and the squirrel went on the offensive, jumped on the eagle and TORE. HIS. ASS. UP.

After tearing out more than a few feathers and then scampering up the nearest tree the squirrel stared down at the eagle, popping his tail and barking incessantly.

The eagle flopped around, gained his feet, and then stood there a minute or so, shaking his head. I am guessing he was thinking " WTF just happened?!".

After he flew off I walked over to see. There was a blanket of feathers and lots of blood drops at the scene of the crime.

Several reasons of varying plausibility and utility: Because Kenya is an ally in the GWOT, and this is basically an "insurance" payout to cover their losses. Because we can. Because we want to be the leader in the GWOT. Because (apparently) some of the attackers were US citizens, so again insurance payout. Because what Swiss Miss said, although it will be phrased more politely. Just because.

Climate change inaction is like Aids denial, says scientist
Professor Nilay Shah, of Imperial College London, predicted that those who argue against a rapid cut in emissions would be judged similarly to those who had disputed the medical evidence on Aids in the past.

Prof Shah was speaking as he launched a report advocating global spending of $2 trillion a year by 2050, or 1 per cent of GDP, to limit global warming to 2C above pre-industrial levels.

He said: "There's an interesting parallel with South Africa in the 90s, where political capital was being made out of HIV denial.

"Those people must now regret what they did. I suspect that some of the politicians [now arguing against rapid cuts in emissions] will still be around in the mid-2030s and will reflect that they didn't do enough on climate change."

While comparing climate scepticism with Aids denial "might be a bit flippant", it involved the same issue of ignoring overwhelming scientific evidence, he added.

    1. WTF   12 years ago

Of course the overwhelming scientific evidence consists of no warming for 17 years and models that have been exposed as total crap.

      1. Longtorso, Johnny   12 years ago

Personally, I wouldn't be unhappy if coal burning for energy was decreased. It is truly a dirty energy source when considering the pollutants emitted from the stack and the sludge ponds surrounding the plant (and people worry about spent nuclear fuel locked in indestructible cement/steel casks?).

But I believe in free markets reducing coal use. Cheap NG and especially a deregulation of nuclear fission would go a long way to decreasing coal use.

    3. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

I find it interesting that the ones who continuously accuse others of politicizing Climate Change? are the only ones seeking to use he political process to enforce their green energy wealth transfer initiative.

    4. Zeb   12 years ago

Even assuming that all the climate change stuff is perfectly correct, that is a stupid analogy. AIDS is a human specific disease that can be controlled and managed in various ways and there are fairly easy, inexpensive ways to stop its transmission.
Doing something about climate change, on the other hand, requires convincing huge numbers of people to act against their own economic interests towards some poorly defined goal of "stable" climate. Which is just not going to happen.

  21. Brett L   12 years ago

Good opinion piece in NYT of all places about how "working within the system" effectively guarantees immoral behavior.

For the leaker and whistleblower the answer to Bolton is that there can be no expectation that the system will act morally of its own accord. Systems are optimized for their own survival and preventing the system from doing evil may well require breaking with organizational niceties, protocols or laws. It requires stepping outside of one's assigned organizational role. The chief executive is not in a better position to recognize systemic evil than is a middle level manager or, for that matter, an IT contractor. Recognizing systemic evil does not require rank or intelligence, just honesty of vision.

    1. John   12 years ago

That is a good article. They system values process not substance. So a give the whistle blower lots of process to air his issues. But it is not going to change what it is doing as a result.

    2. mad libertarian guy   12 years ago

It is a good piece. But what do you want to bet that he still votes a straight D ticket.

      1. John   12 years ago

        1. Elspeth Flashman   12 years ago

I had a similar conversation with my mate about this topic. Why can't the left see the similarities between their support of big government, yet not see that the same thng can be said of big corporations? If the system is supposed to cleanse itself (because voters will not tolerate heads of gov't who are corrupt), then why isn't the same thing true for companies: that voters (or stockholders, or the public) also vote with their feet/dollars and won't support a company that does bad things?

Nope, it's going to be omitted for a couple of reasons one of which is it might suggest US policy is inflaming American Muslims. I heard more about this yesterday but can't find the story. AQ is also claiming attackers from Australia, Canada, Britain, et al. It wasn't clear how many had immigrated from the M-E to the west and how many were born in the west.

Warty Hugeman and The Outlaws of Rustler's Ravine: A Warty Hugeman Time Travel Adventure

"Keep your head down," Warty Hugeman yelled over the echoing gunfire. Marissa dropped down beside him.

"I'm fine," she said. "There's a position on the other side of the ravine. We can catch them in a crossfire fire." She still had her timesuit set to look like a saloon whore, all bows and ruffles and cleavage. Warty wanted her, right there in the dust, bullets slapping at the rocks around them.

The Old West had been her idea; she wanted to solve the mystery of a silver mine that exploded in 1877. Marissa was convinced alien tech was to blame and wanted to steal it before the outlaws mining it destroyed it and themselves. She had been gathering information in the local saloon when the outlaws running the rogue mine got suspicious. They had to steal horses and run because Warty's timesuit was still going through a recharge cycle. Marissa's couldn't shift them both. He had urged her to go somewhen safe. Her only response had been to shoot the horse out from under one of their pursuers and grin wildly.

    1. SugarFree   12 years ago

"We can't work our way over there," he said. She smiled and flickered like a bad splice in high school filmstrip. Gunfire erupted from the far side of the ravine.

"I've told you not to do that! It's too dangerous!" Marissa had traveled to the opposite side of the ravine, and came back an instant after she left.

She leaned into him. "We win," she said, her breath hot in his ear. "We kill them all. And you bend me over this boulder and fuck me." She bit his earlobe lightly.

"You can't be in the same place at the same time with yourself. I've seen the results. If you come in contact with yourself you'll cease to exist!" Warty remembered throwing a Juniper multi-assassin at one of its own time-duplicates. When they met flesh-to-flesh they imploded to into a one dimensional point and evaporated.

"So I'll never get to fist myself in a 69?" she asked, with a mocking pout. The shots from the valley below suddenly stopped. Reloading. Warty stood, sighted out one of them and shot him through the back of the head.

"Only three left," Marissa said. The dust in her cleavage was streaked with rivulets of sweat. Warty wanted to bury his face in them. He wanted to shrink himself down and live in the warm caves between her breasts and between her legs forever. She brushed his erection lightly and his whole body shuddered. She kissed him quickly and rose to fire shots into the valley below. On the other side she did the same. Screaming men and horses.

    2. SugarFree   12 years ago

"Only one, now," she said, squatting back down.

"I'll do it," Warty said. He went around the boulder. The last outlaw was spinning around, unsure of where he would be attacked. Warty whistled and when the man turned, he shot him in the throat.

Marissa. She had pranked him, stole from him, hated him, and hunted him. He pulled her to her feet and tore open her timesuit, the saloon whore dress configuration giving off a satisfying ripping sound.

Across the ravine, Marissa began masturbating furiously as she watched them.

      THE END

Some other types of microaggressions that have been identified include Colorblindness (e.g., "I don't think of you as Black. You are just a normal person"), Denial of personal bias (e.g., "I'm not homophobic; I even have gay friends."), and Minimization of racial-cultural issues (e.g., "Just because you feel alone in this group doesn't mean that there's a racial issue involved."). So how does Wellesley deal with trans people and guys who want to identify as women?

Guys who are biologically women are ok apparently. Or women who undergo gender reassignment surgery after admission.

Jon Hamm's Throat on the DL
..."When he recently ? and allegedly ? coughed up blood, that's when he decided to finally get it checked out," read Life & Style's early report, alarm intact. O Hamm, my Hamm! "Vocal cord polyps are known to be a common condition among people who often use their voices ? such as actors," writes Helpful HuffPo. (Others who often use their voices include but are not limited to: singers, sales associates, Olympic gymnasts, zookeepers, grandparents.) "Vocal cord polyps can best be thought of as 'blisters' on the vocal cords ? they are part of a group of noncancerous lesions, known as vocal cord lesions." Adele and Keith Urban both recently sent their own personal Randy Quaids ( ? doctors) into their own personal Independence Day motherships ( ? throats) and emerged victorious against the malevolent polyps....

SoCon Links Colorado Flooding to Gays, Weed and Abortion

astor Kevin Swanson spoke at length about the deadly floods in a "Generations Radio" discussion with fellow pastor and co-host Dave Buehner. Specifically, Swanson pointed to openly gay State House Majority Leader Mark Ferrandino, who appeared on the cover of the Denver Post kissing partner Greg Wertsch.

Swanson asked, "Is this a coincidence that this was the worst year in the history of Colorado, at least if you use God's law as a means of determining human ethics?"

He slammed the state legislators who "committed homosexual acts on the front page of the Denver Post," which, along with marijuana and abortion rights, prompted the "worst year ever in terms of flood and fire damage in Colorado's history."

So, if the documented lack of warming for over a decade has caused this horrible flood, does that mean we should want more warming?

        I haz a confuzed...

      3. Zeb   12 years ago

The debate over whether certain specific events are caused by climate change/global warming is completely stupid. In a complex dynamic system like climate and weather, everything causes everything else. If there is climate change going on (and when isn't there?) then it is a cause of everything that happens in the atmosphere. It is also in part a result of everything that happens. Unless you have a carefully controlled experiment set up, cause and effect just doesn't work that way. Everything is, to some degree, a cause of every subsequent event.

How the fuck do you fix Reasonable? I saw a solution in the PM links that didn't seem to apply.

What I want to know is: Why is the reply comment box different from the standard comment box.

        That is fucking stupid.

The giant box at the bottom of the screen is pretty obnoxious.

I turned off reasonable. PB is less obnoxious than that box. For now.

It's on and off working now. After some comments (or refreshes) that box-o-code appears and annoys. After others, it's gone.

Comments written by me which necessitate an auto-refresh.

What government shutdown? 59 percent of non-defense employees will remain on the job even if the White House and Congress can't agree on a spending deal.

So basically, 41 percent of the non-defense employees are not needed. Can't we just lay them off permanently and reap the savings?
