95-Year-Old Dies After Cops Taze, Shoot Him With Bean Bag Rounds
After tasing him first.

On Friday, Chicago police responded to calls from a senior citizen community about a belligerent resident. John Warna, 95, was behaving in a "combative" manner, according to the Chicago Tribune. He was being taken involuntarily by a private ambulance company from The Victory Centre of Park Forest, the seniors' facility where he lived.
Apparently, the Warna was using several household items as weapons to fight off the staff. The Chicago Tribune writes that "when police arrived, Warna was threatening staff and paramedics with a metal cane and a 2-foot metal shoehorn." The officers told him to let go of his cane and shoehorn. He obeyed, but instead picked up what the officers described as a "12-inch butcher type kitchen knife."
The standoff escalated when the officers could not convince Warna to drop the knife. According to the Tribune:
Police continued to demand that Warna surrender and follow their orders and eventually used a Taser on him. That failed to subdue him and he continued to threaten others, the release said. Police then fired bean bag rounds at the man to get him to drop the knife and surrender. He did so and was taken into custody.
E-News Park Forest, a local online media outlet, explains the officers' decision to use "less than lethal bean bag rounds," because they believed they could make Warna "drop the knife without causing serious injury."
The 95-year-old "was conscious and talking to officers and staff" after the confrontation ended. Warna was taken first to St. James Hospital and then to Advocate Christ Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m.
An autopsy will be performed in order to determine the exact cause of death, and according to several reports, Illinois officials in the Police Public Integrity Unit plan to investigate the case.

This is pretty low on the outrage meter. I'm not sure what else the cops were supposed to do once he had the knife other than maybe lock whatever room the old man was in and wait for him to wear himself out.
I don't know, grab him? 95 year olds are not universally spry. In fact, they aren't spry at all. Seems like anyone who could pass a police physical could move laterally fast enough to tackle him. Although, he must have been a badass to take a tazing and stay upright and holding the knife. (Or, you know, the cops fucked it up.)
I know, but my grandmother's husband is 96 and mean as hell and he still moves around pretty well and if he was wielding a knife I don't think he's go down without trying to take someone with him. Even just flailing about he could do some damage.
So don't try to take him to the hospital against his will.
That's the key. They probably had to do it to avoid liability, though. If he was senile then someone else was responsible for his welfare. I'm not saying that's how it should be, but that's how it is.
If he was senile, leave the room for 10 minutes and come back after he forgets why he's holding a knife.
Being senile must be terrifying.
"Why the fuck am I waving a knife at cops? Who knows, just run with it!"
(Or, you know, the cops fucked it up.)
No way a 95-year old bulled through the proper use of a taser. The cops must have screwed it up somehow. So why did they move on to bean bags rather than trying another taser?
FYTW
I would take any police description of the "tactical 12-inch assault butcher pit bull furtively moving type kitchen knife" with a salt mine.
Well, yeah.
Did they really measure the knife? This sounds like the embellishment of a practiced liar.
other than maybe lock whatever room the old man was in and wait for him to wear himself out.
Sounds like a good idea.

You come up with the obvious, non-violent solution and your outrage is LOW?
DON'T TAZE ME BRO!
DON'T TAZE ME BRO WHIPPER-SNAPPER!
FIFY
Don't fuck with The Warna.
Illinois officials in the Police Public Integrity Unit plan to investigate the case.
What could the outcome be? I'm on the edge of my seat.
No shit.
Procedures were followed. Cops have a right to go home at night.
A bean bag was discharged. Man died due to lack of oxygen to the brain.
When only the bust cover-up will do . . . .
The 95-year-old "was conscious and talking to officers and staff" after the confrontation ended.
Was the talk more like "I'm planning to die now so my relatives can sue your asses penniless" or "Wait a minute, I have a nickel for a cherry phosphate"?
"I'm coming, Elizabeth!"
"Get off my lawn!"
I'm pretty sure it was something involving the Cleveland Browns...
Less than lethal is a misnomer. Less lethal, perhaps. Even the Taser stood a decent chance of killing him had it connected properly (no way it did and he stayed upright). There were many better ways to de-escalate the situation, but the pigs couldn't be bothered to take the time and effort to do so. Have to get those weapons warm somehow!
Obviously a Warna-be cop.
Where can I buy bean bag rounds?

Thanks, Dad will be 90 this year and you never know when he might flip.
Best to get a taser, too. The old man may be more resilient than you think. 🙂

Oh, I thought you wanted to buy round bean bags.
No doubt, Cops are vicious dicks, but I'm not going to say this is worst way to die.
When the law break in
How you gonna go?

He was all hopped up on sponge-bath salts!
RESISTANCE IS FATAL
I finally get to join the ranks of the hat tip snubbed!
I'd like to thank my family, the H&R commentariat and, of course, the server squirrels!
Hat tip whiners are the worst.
Hat tips are for closers.
Officer safety. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 Cleveland Browns.
At least Anonbot hasn't come here to say "roll that beautiful bean-bag footage." Maybe he has some taste.
Wow! Looks great and comfortable. That is a wonderfull bean bags . I am impressed! Your fabric is much more stylish than what they offer. Best quality bean bags and bean bags chairs that will blow our mind. Thank you for sharing valuable information.
