Intelligence Services Struggling With Terrorist Suspects Keeping to Themselves

While intelligence agencies have been successful in preventing many large-scale terrorist attacks they are struggling to figure out how to deal with terrorist suspects who are encouraged to work alone and without specific dates for attacks.
The Boston Marathon bombing, the murder of a British soldier in London, and the attack on a French soldier in Paris are all recent examples of attacks carried out with cheap weapons and without extensive support.
From the Associated Press:
PARIS (AP) - Intelligence agencies that have succeeded in thwarting many of al-Qaida's plans for spectacular attacks are struggling to combat the terror network's strategy of encouraging followers to keep to themselves, use off-the-shelf weapons and strike when they see an opportunity. In recent weeks - at the Boston Marathon, in the streets of London and in the shadow of one of Paris' most recognizable monuments - young men allegedly carried out attacks with little help, using inexpensive, widely available knives and explosives from everyday ingredients. In each of the attacks, suspects had previously been flagged to law enforcement and deemed not to be a priority.
Of course, it is always worth remembering how unlikely it is to be killed in a terrorist attack, however the attack is organized.

The solution is pretty obvious. Just wait for the suspects to post their intentions to facebook. "Gonna blow op teh infidelz t2day looooolz"
Don't know if everyone has seen these yet, but they were new to me. Carrie Fisher was really, really hot once.
Newly released pics from the set of Empire Strikes Back
And a fun chick too, based on her giving Luke a piggyback ride like that.
Cool pics. I heard that Frank Ox was so convincing as Yoda that Hamil, Lucas, and Kasdan had to remember to talk to Oz and not the puppet Yoda in between takes.
NTIM, I prefer Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga)
So you like the Druish princesses
Other than their industrial strength hairdryers, yes.
I liked her in Gross Anatomy.
Joan Rivers looked the best she ever has in that film.
Did Rivers play an Ewok or a Jawa?
Emperor Palpatine.
Ah, a magical time when George Lucas was smart enough to hand directing duties to Irvin Kershner.
Cool pics, thanks for the link.
Thanks, that was fun to check out. Carrie Fisher looked like she was a blast to be around back in the day.
She's bipolar, so she was probably a blast to be around half the time. The other half... probably high as shit.
So how do they prevent other crime from happening? Oh, wait, they don't...
BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE!
Expensive Clean-up Crews with Excessive Authority.
Self-Defense is The Only Defense.
And it is not like it is new either The Man Who Rented Bank Mailboxes and related. Same incidents from the 1970s.
And the way it ended, in 1896: Bank Bomb Suspect From `70s Arrested.
I hear they're developing a precrime unit to deal with these issues.
They are called "Psychologists" and "Analysts" who are supposed to predict from tests as long as two hours, if someone should be allowed to posses a defensive device.
In each of the attacks, suspects had previously been flagged to law enforcement and deemed not to be a priority.
Then prioritize everyone. Do I have to think of everything?
The problem is obviously that terrorists don't have enough property worth confiscating.
Best theory I've heard.
If you prioritize everyone, you prioritize no one.
Oh wait... I see where you're going.
They have? Link?
What are you, some kind of traitor? If they say they have then they have. After all, they have Top Men working in counterterrorism.
I think the author of this post is the real traitor, making claims he won't back up. Where you at Feeney? Explain yourself!
Didn't they stop the Mayan calender end-of-the-world, Hale Bop, planet alignment, and all those others?
You forgot Y2K
Well, it was pretty forgettable.
That was one of the others.
I stopped Y2K. Personally. God I remember that shit.
I prevented it. Always used 4 digit years in my databases even before it became an issue. Everybody else was just catching up to me! lol
"Didn't they stop the Mayan calender end-of-the-world, Hale Bop, planet alignment, and all those others?"
And the New Madrid earthquake! They stopped that!
Uh, they stopped the underwear bomber didn't they?
I thought that was an air marshal or maybe just a passenger.
It was the system i.e. Homeland Security i.e. intelligence agencies.
Yes. I understand now. I will trust the system and stop asking questions.
It was a passenger who alerted the flight attendants, though the guy would have failed anyway since he ignited his undie contents rather than exploding them.
Passengers stopped Richard Reid (the shoe bomber) and of course thwarted the 9/11 hijackers' attempt to crash into the Capitol. The last time a govt agent/agency is known to have thwarted a terror attack (that wasn't hatched/controlled by undercover agents themselves) was in the late 90s when that customs agent caught a guy trying to smuggle scads of explosives across the Canadian border north of Seattle.
It's possible they've stopped other attacks that we don't know about, but considering how much they brag about foiling the plots that undercover agents created themselves, that's hard to believe.
That guy traveling across the border stopped himself. He probably would have made it through the border without any incident, except when his car approached the checkpoint, he literally panicked and bolted from the car.
This, of course, alerted the sharp people manning the little booths that something was amiss.
I actually knew the prosecutor on that case.
Yeah, this is the Reason writer himself repeating the unfalsifiable statist mantra. Sheesh.
What about Islamoclown from North Carolina that got droned in Yemen? Saved the fucking world right there. Islamoclown's kid got droned couple days later, too. So that's world fucking saved squared.
You mean successful terrorists have enough self-discipline to not post their plans for jihad alongside their "I just took a really big poop" posts?
That's, like, a complete game-changer. I mean terrorists *never* kept shit to themselves before. I guess we should just open up all forms of communication to government "at-will" scrutiny since the law-enforcement scene is so different than it was in days of yor.
And yet law enforcement jumps all over anyone who posts vague threats in their FB newsfeed...
at the Boston Marathon, in the streets of London and in the shadow of one of Paris' most recognizable monuments....
is it even worth pointing out that none of these 3 incidents has ever been linked to any "terror network", much less Al Qaeda, and consequently probably should be considered something less than "International terrorism" and more like "ideologically motivated violence"? i personally dont see any of it as a sign we all needs to start pants-wetting even harder.
If you don't call it terrorism, you must hate America.
"i personally dont see any of it as a sign we all needs to start pants-wetting even harder."
Yeah, well you probably don't think those gropers at TSA airport cattle yards are wonderful, either!
OT, but worthy of Obozo's continuing hypocrisy:
"A sad casualty of the Obama drug war"
"an entrepreneur and father of two in his 30s ? has agreed to a plea bargain that will allow him to serve five years in federal prison for operating medical marijuana facilities."

Oh wait, redundant. Never mind.
Tornados on the ground in OKC.
again? But I stopped burning fossil fuels. wtf.
Shoot at it with guns.
The front seems pretty slow-moving; hope everyone's on or under the deck

Tornado hunt team got caught in one. Truck thrown 200' from the road. Rolled it multiple times. Minor injuries. Lucky!
Them muthafuckahs is crazy!
Now they have one headed for St Louis.
Man, FdA, that storm has simply stalled over OKC:

I don't envy you the tornados, but I sure miss T-storms in SF. That was evening punctuation to a day in the midwest.
me too
Better than tornados in the air, I say.
LOL: Ghost Hunter gone wrong
That *ain't* paranormal.
At least he figured out where the mysterious moaning and banging sounds were coming from. Occam's Razor is a bitch sometimes I guess.
The Tri-Lams had the same problem in Revenge of the Nerds. Solution: spike the punch bowl.
did someone give you juice?

It's just human nature to elevate the risk of harm from other humans over natural events that cause as much or more harm. We're wired that way, all of us. Until recently there was a darned good chance the neighboring tribe would slaughter and eat your tribe, when times got tough, if your tribe didn't keep its guard up.
This is some faux Reason reasoning (I know, drink) that drops the context of being human. Earth will be engulfed in flames when the sun cools so why worry about the who is knocking on your door at 4 am.
"This is some faux Reason reasoning (I know, drink) that drops the context of being human."
If 'being human' means we're all to simply accept the irrationality of 'being human', why in hell do we bother with learning science?
Nope. Part of 'being human' is looking at mistakes we have made and not repeating them.
Part of 'being human' is looking at mistakes we have made and not repeating them.
I would have put the quotes around 'mistake' 'cause I'm kind of sciency. When evolution makes a mistake the mistakes perish. Being human, as we are, warts and all, is not a mistake. And I'm already in over my head with this, but for your consideration, the statement you made is Progressivism in a nutshell.
..."but for your consideration, the statement you made is Progressivism in a nutshell."
It's nothing of the sort, and in fact it is the opposite.
Regressers presume the worst of mankind and rely on government to 'correct' that through the efforts of really smart people who hold the guns.
Libertarians presume mistakes are part of the human condition and that they are best corrected by the free interchange between those people, learning from mistakes.
I think you have a very corrupted view of the opinions of those who desire freedom.
So, what, we should accept irrationality? Bullshit.
You're just kicking the can down the street by replacing 'mistakes' with 'irrationality'.

"You're just kicking the can down the street by replacing 'mistakes' with 'irrationality'."
You're an ignoramus.
You're an ignoramus.
Jumpin' Jesus on a cracker, Sevo, I already told you I was in over my head. So are you. Am I wrong about something?
"Am I wrong about something?"
Yes:
"You're just kicking the can down the street by replacing 'mistakes' with 'irrationality'."
If you know you're beyond your ability to make cogent comments, it behooves you to quit.
How to make friends and influence people...by Sevo.
😉
Huh? Perhaps I misunderstood you? You claimed that because we are human and "wired that way" it's okay to be afraid of shit that is extremely unlikely.
That's nonsense. You don't get to disregard logic because of irrational fear. First off, it's a waste of time and resources. Second, it's cowardly.
Sure we have innate fears based upon our evolution. You overcome nonsensical fears by applying rational thought. And it's expected.
You don't get to disregard logic because of irrational fear.
Deep breath. I am trying to get my 5yo son to fall asleep in the dark. His fear of the dark is not irrational! He is born with this fear for good reason. Any creepy crawly thing could get him in dark without warning. Acute broad spectrum vision is a primary attribute in humans that has enabled them to survive, but it doesn't work in the dark. I haven't actually tried reading scholarly articles to him about the probability of being the victim of spider attack in the dark of night versus one in the light of day, but come to think of it, that would put us both to sleep anywhere.
My complaint here is mostly about the overuse or misuse of a word like 'irrational'. It is certainly irrational to commit suicide when a commit comes nears the earth or give your life earnings to a fortune teller, but many of the ordinary fears or social prohibitions that are called 'irrational' don't fit that word so well.
I was afraid of the dark when I was five. When I became a man, I realized my fear was irrational based upon logic. I expect other adults to use logic to overcome the irrational as well.
You don't get to use unfounded fear as an excuse to do stupid shit.
Tell your 5yo, that I said he needs to man up. 🙂

More Obozo wonderfullness!
"Judge orders Google to turn over data to FBI"
"Illston put the Google ruling on hold until the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals could decide the matter. Until then, she said the Mountain View, Calif.-based company would have to comply with the letters unless it showed the FBI didn't follow proper procedures in making its demands for customer data in the 19 letters Google is challenging."

Prolly covered earlier and I missed it, but hey, shithead and shreek, tell us again how Obozo is really a great guy and he really can't keep track of all the stuff he's sposta, since sekwester and stuff.
Ya know, it's times like this I miss MNG. Really, I'd love to jam stuff like this into his sleazy face and wait for the lies.
tell us again how Obozo is really a great guy
Don't worry, they will, tomorrow. It's past their bedtime now.
Of course, the government goons would rather you didn't know that, since the average person will only gladly surrender all their liberties if they wrongly believe themselves to be in serious and imminent danger.
"Of course, the government goons would rather you didn't know that, since the average person will only gladly surrender all their liberties if they wrongly believe themselves to be in serious and imminent danger."

(and likely to shoot your damn dog anyhow)
DAFT PUNK.
That is all.
Yeah. That new song is tremendous. Someone told me the whole album destroys. Looks like I'll be hitting up iTunes today.
If there is anything to be worried about that I've seen in recent 'terrorist' attacks its not so much the government's reaction, but citizenry-at-large. Like that London thing, crazy Islamoclown (its amazing what passes for 'British' these days) butchers another human being, and everyone just stood around like sheep and watched. Then continued to watch as Islamoclown shat out his screed for something like fifteen minutes until the cops appeared.
9/11 happened because a few stoops intimidated entire airliners full of people with boxcutters - sheeple die faster than any other kind, and London apparently is one giant dumb flock for the slaughter. A society that docile, passive, and pathetic gets what it deserves.
That's not really true though, the first three planes had no idea they were going to crash the plane into something. After all, before that, all hijackers did was hijack.
The last flight, which did know that they would get crashed, fought back. And crashed, as it were, but they died on their own terms, not someone elses..
Terrorism is essentially a form of war. It's not necessarily how many people you kill in a war, but taking over the other people's territory and becoming their ruler.
And Islam is succeeding. These terror attacks show that they control and occupying these areas, they they intend to be our new rulers eventually. And they will, if we don't fight them. Not with drone strikes on seemingly random people halfway around the world.
It's like the American Indians when the first European colonies arrived. Sure, a few Indians might have died in isolated incidents, but it was just a precursor to a long term colonization.
Look at what happened to the Vikings. The Indians there said "Enough" and chased them out of the country. The Indians down south weren't so wary, they welcomed the colonists more or less, and forgave minor incidents. Only to be essentially wiped out, all their land taken except for the most wild and unwanted places on the continent, and even then, they'd lose them if anything (like oil or minerals) was found that the colonists would want.
To a certain extent, it's poetic justice that it's now happening to the Western world, but on the same time, being a member of it, I can definitely see the downside.
You have it backwards. It is the Muslims who are the Indians. The Indians were confronted with a more advanced civilization. The smart ones assimilated. The dumb ones kept fighting until the more advanced civilization had had enough and just slaughtered them.
The same thing is happening here with Islam. Fundamentalist Islam is a reaction of people who reject the modern world and modern civilization. If Muslims keep embracing it, the will eventually do enough damage and enrage the rest of the world to such a degree that it will just slaughter them like the West did the Indians and be done with it.
Islam is a dying religion. We in America get the impression it is resurgent because we think the world revolves around Europe. Well, it is certainly more active in Europe than it has ever been. But in Africa and Asia it is loosing ground very fast. Muslims are so intolerant of dissent not because they are strong and confident. They are that way because they are weak and insecure.
Doesn't appear to be losing ground in Africa or Asia.
