Covered at Reason 24/7: Sequestration Fearmongering Failing
The "Administration That Cried Wolf" is now reaping the consequences. As the sequestration drags on, more and more Americans are wondering what the big deal was about the cuts.
Via Greg Sargent at The Washington Post:
A new McClatchy-Marist poll finds that the percentage of Americans who don't believe the sequester cuts are hurting the economy has actually jumped 13 points over the last month, while the percentage who think they are damaging the economy is going down:
When it comes to the impact of the automatic spending cuts on the economy, 40 percent of adults nationally say they have had no effect on the economy. 36 percent believe they have had a negative impact while 14 percent say the sequester cuts have had a positive one. 10 percent are unsure.
There has been an increase in the proportion of Americans who think these across-the-board spending cuts have had little impact on the nation's economy.
That wasn't what the president was hoping to hear.

Maybe the people aren’t as stupid as he thought.
They’re stupid – no doubt about that, it’s just they’re not THAT stupid.
There are still the 36% out there who believe that reducing the rate of increase actually hurt the economy…
Krugnuts has a large cult, apparently.
Why else would anyone continue to pay him to write a bunch of shitty columns each month?
As the sequestration drags on, more and more Americans are wondering what the big deal was about the cuts.
But, we’re missing out on all kinds of meaningless displays of military power!!!!
North Korea is working on this. Give them a little more time.
Why do you think they were shilling so hard about sequestration being the end of the world? They know better than anyone how useless they are.
Your mom is useless.
It’s true, I get much more use out of your mom. “Use” means sex. If you were unclear.
“Use” means sex. If you were unclear.
Hey…he’s not stupid.
I’m just glad my skin isn’t that dingy “olive” color. I’d hate to think there was a chance that you were my real father.
It’s worse… he’s your grandfather, and he still has sex with his daughter after she gave birth to you.
He’s not ready for the truth! Stop it!
He’d have to be my time-traveling grandfather from the future. No way Epi is anywhere near that cool.
“I did do the nasty in the past-y!”

And they’ll shrug their shoulders at the next election and vote the bastards back in, again.
When workers get a 2% pay cut thanks to the end of the payroll tax holiday, I assume they find it difficult to pity the government crying poverty for the same.
My links are better, Shackford.
Where’s the Beef Sequester? Agencies Skirt Spending Cuts
Better to let meat rot and prices rise than to live in a world without USDA inspectors.
Yeeeeeeah. Remember the IRS star trek video where they claim that without the irs and the tax code anarchy and mayhem would reign?
The IRS imposes order in an otherwise chaotic world.
Does anyone other than brain-dead bureaucrats really believe that?
The IRS imposes order in an otherwise chaotic world.
Does anyone other than brain-dead bureaucrats really believe that?
Yes, which is why this farce we call the federal government continues unabated.
Sadly, yes. DC is ripe with them.
Rife? Or ripe? Or rape?
All they know is steal…and spend…and rape.
It’s rife with rape, in other words.
“I know it wasn’t rife-rife. It was something else but I don’t believe it was rife-rife.
Perhaps they could first cut down on the rabbit inspectors, but they are following the Firemen First principle.
There has been an increase in the proportion of Americans who think these across-the-board spending cuts have had little impact on the nation’s economy.
Time for the administration to pivot to this talking point. “The sequester is having no effect on the economy, SO WHY KEEP IT IN PLACE???”
Oh My God…You CAN see the future !
Sounds like a very good plan to me dude, I like it.

Maybe the population will wise up and realize that real cuts wouldn’t hurt as much as they think they would.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Excellent joke, Kristen. That was a joke, right?
Yeah, sadly.
Well, thanks to the sequester, I’m commenting via one of those hand-cranked laptops via 14k dial-up that I’m pirating. Me and my family live in a group of cardboard boxes, which are actually pretty nice. We made them waterproof with some cans of ScotchGuard that we pilfered.
You monster. If you’d just let the cardboard boxes get wet, you could go buy new ones and stimulate this economy into a recovery.
I’m weak, I know. But why did they austerity me with the sequester? Why? I voted for unicorns and here I am without even a rainbow.
They outlawed rainbows on account of the pots of gold.
Since the roads collapsed from the lack of funding, I wouldn’t be able to catch the end of the rainbow, anyway.
Typical WaPoM idiotic comments:
WTF? Let’s pretend, just for the heck of it, that the ~$90 billion in spending “cuts” were direct handouts to citizens. That would be around $300 for every person in the country. If a person spent 10% of their income at an individual business, that would be $30. If your customer base is 1000, that’s $30,000 in revenue, which would be maybe $3000 in profits. Of course, none of the above calculations are anywhere near reality, but why let that stop us from making completely clueless statements about the economy?
OUR ECONOMY IS BUILT ON THE GOVERNMENT STEALING MONEY FROM PEOPLE TO GIVE TO PEOPLE TO STIMULATE THE ECONOMY.
WHY CAN’T YOU SEE THAT!?!?!?!?!?!1111
It’s a profit deal!
An economy that is based upon voluntary transactions creates wealth, so society as a whole becomes richer.
This is immoral because the wealth is not spread equally.
An economy that is based upon forceful wealth redistribution destroys wealth, so society as a whole becomes poorer.
This is moral because while the logical conclusion of such policies is poverty, the poverty is shared equally.
SEQUESTRATION IS PEOPLLLLLLllllleee…
You spelled SEEKWESTRAYSHUN wrong!
You for got ERMERGERD!
Yeah because small business people don’t keep track of receipts and expenses throughout the year. Nope, they just add up everything on December 31st.
Liberals really are this stupid .
When Captain Zero started yammering about school teachers and janitors losing their jobs it was indication #3,247,892 that he is completely full of steamy shit and a foolproof way to tell that the sequester meant absolutely nothing.
Yet, they still turn the cameras on when he stands up to speak.
Really, one of these days, because of the supply crunch, I am going to run out of reloading supplies.
When that day comes I will sit down and try to make a list of all the completely asinine, dishonest, marxist, stupid shit that this worthless idiot has said in the course of his career in national politics. It will be to the list of Bushisms what the Encyclopedia Britannica is to my weekly grocery list.
Even the most loathsome politicians will sometimes make sense. Obama seems to be the exception to this. I can’t think of a single time I have ever heard him speak where I went “well he has a point there”. Never.
Even a blind squirrel….
Debt ceiling
Don’t raise taxes in a recession
You maniacs! You sequestered it all up! God damn you! GOD DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!
With the Statue of Liberty no longer adequately funded, it may very well sink into the sand.
You did it. You sequestered up his brain, you bloody baboon!
Get your hands off me, you damned dirty teabaggerz!
The Forbidden Zone was once a paradise. Your breed made a desert of it, ages ago, when you sequestered all of the government’s bounty.
Glory be to the Obama, and to the Holy Sequestration. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be. Debt without end. Amen.
You are right, I have always known about man. From the evidence, I believe his wisdom must walk hand and hand with his idiocy. His emotions must rule his brain. He must be a warlike creature who sequesters everything around him, even himself.
In one of the countless billions of galaxies in the universe, lies a medium-sized star, and one of its satellites, a green and insignificant planet, is now sequestered.
The way you sequestered me? All of you? You led me around on a reduced budget!
You ask me to help you? Man is evil! Capable of nothing but sequestration!
You are a menace. A walking sequester.
Have you forgotten your scripture, the thirteenth continuing resolution? “And Pelosius brought the upright beast into the garden and sequestered him to a tree and the children did make sport of him.”
You did it. You sequestered his brain, you bloody baboon!
The sequestration… the sequestration…
A planet where bureaucrats evolved from men? There’s got to be an answer.
Imagine me needing a budget. Back on Earth I never did. Oh, there were continuing resolutions. Lots of continuing resolutions. Lots of law-making but no plan. You see, that was the kind of world we’d made. So I left, because there was no one to not sequester me there.
Oh my God. I’m back. I’m home. All the time, it was. . . We finally really sequestered.
Don’t look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you sequester.
Or, “Don’t sequester it, Taylor. You may not like what you see.”
Planet of the Sequester.
Sequester of the Apes.
Battle for the Planet of the Sequester
Rise of the Budget Lowering Schemes
Beneath the Sequester of the Apes.
Escape from the Planet of the Tea-Baggers
WINNER!
SF’s 3:59 that is.
In honor of Roger Ebert: Beyond the Valley of the Sequester.
The president feels your sequestration pain!
He’s giving himself a 5% pay cut to show solidarity with his fellow civil servants who are suffering so greatly in these terrible times.
“For Sequester, Kerry, Worth $198.65 Million, to Give $9,175 to Charity”
“State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Kerry, however, will give his 5 percent to a charity for department employees. She says he already makes significant charitable donations. Kerry makes $183,500 this year. His donation is worth $9,175.”
http://www.weeklystandard.com/…..14529.html
So… why are they only giving 5%? Last I heard government orgs were furloughing 6-8% of their hours. I mean, if you want to make a pointless political statement why not at least match what the little people are experiencing?
In the DoD, we presently are scheduled to have 14 days of furlough spread over 14 weeks, so it will be a 20% cut during that time. That works out to be a little over 5% paycut for the year. Except the president is only cutting 5% for part of the year, and he doesn’t pay for food, housing, transportation, etc.
When it comes to the impact of the automatic spending cuts on the economy, 40 percent of adults nationally say they have had no effect on the economy. 36 percent believe they have had a negative impact while 14 percent say the sequester cuts have had a positive one. 10 percent are unsure.
Fox News: 56 percent of Americans believe the sequester is having no or a positive effect on the economy. Clearly the sequester isn’t as bad as we thought
MSDNC: Nearly 40 percent of Americans believe the sequester is hurting the economy, and another 10 percent aren’t sure of the effects, which probably means they haven’t felt the pain yet. So half the country is hurting from these cuts.
