Free Truck Offered by LAPD to Women Shot at During Dorner Manhunt Would Have to Be Taxed, Will Get Cash Instead
Women's attorney says the free truck would've been treated as a prize for tax purposes

The LAPD promised a free truck to the women whose truck they shot up (at least 112 times, with one of the women being struck twice in the back) while hunting for the ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, but taxes got in the way. According to NBC Los Angeles:
According to [the women's attorney Glen] Jonas, LAPD and Galpin Ford wanted his clients to pose for a photo opportunity and pay income tax on the truck. The women no longer want the truck after they were told they needed to fill out a 1099 form for the donation, Jonas said Monday…
Galpin Ford estimates the value of the truck – a 2013 Ford 150 SuperCrew – at $32,560. The dealership had planned on paying the sales tax, vehicle registration and title on the truck, according to a dealership spokesperson.
"It's really sad for us because we want to help these women move on with their lives, and help them move forward with that, we just can't get past the 1099 issue," LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. "The government has to take their bite out of it, I guess."
The truck was not a prize, the women's attorney noted. Could the LAPD have offered to pay the income tax on the truck? Maybe. Instead, the LAPD will pay the women $40,000 as reimbursement for the truck. The deal, according to the women's attorney and the LAPD, is just for damage to the truck, and won't preclude any litigation related to the incident. The women, who obviously look nothing like Christopher Dorner, are likely to sue, and neither has been able to work since the shooting.

If I were either of those women, the only thing I'd want from the LAPD would be a one-way ticket to whichever point on the planet is farthest from them.
Madagascar?
Still no charges for the trigger happy cops responsible, I see.
They'll have to suffer through a period of paid administrative leave, counseling, and more training. What more do you want?
Their heads on a pike would be nice. I'd even settle for a figurative pike.
How about we let these two women unload 112 rounds into their squad car with them in it?
Termination?
Wreckless endangerment charges?
If I went out and randomly shot at strangers I'd be in Jail why aren't the cops in jail. And lets not use the excuse that it was in the course of doing their job that don't cut it If I were a truck driver and during the course of my job ran over someone I'd be sent to jail.
This incident has really changed my feeling towards the police.

From his latest post, an interview:
"Game of Drones"
Awesome.
It's amazing read up.

Wow, what better time than to bring up another thread (and make another point) of why INCOME taxes are nigh fucking immoral. Because anything you receive is potential income. And the government wants its payment in cash. The women can't remove four hubcaps and hand them to the IRS agent.
Meh, the LAPD probably would have mistakenly handed the keys to the truck to the first large black man they saw.
I love it when someone in commentland gets a little recognition.
Congrats to sloopy for the hat tip.
No adjective though. That's the new gold-standard.
It's really sad for us because we want to help these women move on with their lives
Now, I'm just spitballing, here, but MAYBE IF YOU WORTHLESS SHITBAGS DID NOT ENGAGE IN RANDOM PANIC FIRE INCIDENTS, THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO "MOVE ON" FROM.
Fuck the LAPD. It's too bad Dorner didn't take a lot more of them with him.
Panic fire? Oh come now P Brooks. That was rage fire.
Bored entitled sadism fire?
Because we can get away with it fire.
"These blast-points... Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise."
Many times I've heard or read where somebody commented about Kenobi's description of Stormtroopers' superior marksmanship versus their apparent inability to hit anything when actually engaged in combat with the heroes. There is no disconnect however if you recognize that Obi-wan was being sarcastic.
Nonsense. They were good shots when capturing Princess Leia's cruiser at the start of the film.
The disconnect is that the movie would end on a bummer note, far too soon, if they could actually hit Protagonists at close range. Thus they Magically Can't.*
(After all, these Stormtroopers are the Galactic police/occupation force**, and managed to win a war against the entire Jedi order.
They're not worse shots than Barney Fife.)
* A perhaps better, if poorly evidenced, theory is that Vader was stringing along the Emperor the whole time to take him down from below, and was thus using his force powers to protect Leia, Han, and Luke et. al on the Death Star.
This also helps explain why the Stormtroopers are shooting at her, rather than trying to take her and the others alive; you'd think they'd simply overwhelm them or use non-lethal means.
** Depending on whether you buy into Rebel or Imperial propaganda.
neither has been able to work since the shooting.
What about the poor terrified cops? Are they back on the job, or are they awaiting finalozation of their PTSD "permanent disability" status?
Good thing they didn't pick what was behind door #3.
So it was even dumber (mind explodes) than I originally thought?
Originally, I had supposed that the police had developed the following...argument:
Premise: Dorner has a blue Nissan Titan pickup truck.
Premise: I see a blue Nissan Titan pickup truck.
Conclusion: Therefore, I should shoot the blue Nissan Titan pickup truck 112 times.
But now, I see that conception of their reasoning was actually too generous:
Premise: Dorner has a blue Nissan Titan pickup truck.
Premise: I see a blue truck.
Conclusion: Therefore, I should shoot the blue truck 112 times.
lol, thats liek the craziest thign I have heard all year!

This state taxes everything. I got a new phone this past weekend. Y'know how when you sign up for the 2-year plan, the $550 phone only costs $200? Well, fucking California doesn't think so. I had to pay the tax on the $550 rate.
I feel you pain. My phone was on sale for $0.01 but I still had to pay $35 is sales tax.
